- 1:21And now though it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
- 1:26The original aired aid on Today's Philip Morrow program is October one of nineteen
- 1:32forty nine, and the title is the Tale of the Mermaid Get This and
- 1:36Get It straight. Crime is a sucker's road and those who travel had wind
- 1:40up in the gut of the Prison of the Graves. This started with a
- 1:42wreck and went from there to double murder over seventy five thousand bucks worth of
- 1:47glitter that nobody got in the end, because I found out just in time
- 1:52what was fishy about the Tale of the mermaid From the pen of Raymond Chandler,
- 1:57out sending, author of crime shouldn't come to his most famous character in
- 2:01the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, all with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe.
- 2:16We bring you tonight's exciting story, The Tale of the Mermaids. Nine thirty.
- 2:36I was still in my office, sucking in the loose ends on a
- 2:38report, while I listened with half an ear to the fabric of city sounds
- 2:42rising from the street below, fabric ripped suddenly by tires crawing concrete. The
- 2:47shattering crash that callow brought me to my feet. With a traffic accident,
- 2:52and a bad one. I ran to the window, but it had happened
- 2:53around the corner, out of sight from my office. I watched others run
- 2:58for it, and remembered grimly that every thirty second and somewhere in the country,
- 3:00a thing like that happened, and one out of every sixteen minutes was
- 3:05fating. I wondered it would been shoot up in a Chromeia meat grinder.
- 3:10This time, as I listened to first of Parias and the emergency ambulance and
- 3:14finally with scavenger truck cleaned the wreck off the street. After that, I
- 3:19went back to my report again and tried to forget about it. But an
- 3:22hour later, that same accident came back into my office. Mister Morrow,
- 3:27Yeah, this is Corey Riggs. Uh, yes, miss Riggs. I'm
- 3:30a nurse at the Warwick Emergency Hospital. About an hour ago a man named
- 3:35Sanley Ott was brought in and he's been calling for you for me. He
- 3:38was badly injured in an automobile accident on Kowing on his way to your office.
- 3:42Wait a minute, who did you say this one. I'm the nurse
- 3:45assigned to mister ottopha hospital. I just got off to it and I had
- 3:47to wait until I was relieved before I could call you. I see.
- 3:51Well, look, miss Riggs, I'd like to help in any way I
- 3:53can, but it's nine thoullo. Mister Ott gave me two hundred and fifty
- 3:57dollars and told me to court you. Yeah, I know, but and
- 3:59he said that I should give you two hundred feet of fifty for myself.
- 4:02Oh fine, now I get clients by proxy. I beg your pardon nothing,
- 4:05I'll be right over. It's Riggs. I didn't know anyone named Stanley
- 4:15out, and I felt a little like an ambulance chaser. But I was
- 4:17only fifteen minutes and getting the emergency hospitals. As I walked up the ambulance
- 4:21ramp, a smart looking brunette came toward me. I'm Corey Riggs, the
- 4:27nurse who called hello? Can I see him? Though? It wouldn't do
- 4:30any good. You see, he went into a coma a few minutes after
- 4:33I called. Oh, two ladies, edide, let's move away from the
- 4:38door, shall we? Sure you see mister Molow? Before he went into
- 4:42the coma, art wasn't rational. He was raving about what sort of thing
- 4:46about you and a girl? Oh, as near as I could make out,
- 4:49she's supposed to meet someone tonight at two o'clock and collect seventy five thousand
- 4:54dollars. It's quite an ass, simon, who's the girl? I don't
- 4:56know. All I said was something about a plaid code is identification? Right?
- 5:00Coad uh? Any idea? What he wanted me to do? Chaperone.
- 5:03Maybe no, he kept pleading, stoppers, stopper, she can't do
- 5:08it. So I am sure that he wanted you to prevent this girl from
- 5:11keeping that appointment. For some reason. It seems absolutely imperative to him.
- 5:15Well, was this two o'clock meeting is supposed to take place? I have
- 5:17no idea. Oh fine, it boils down to this girl we don't know
- 5:23in a plaid code is meeting someone we don't know what, a place we
- 5:25don't know. It's a way. I am a man who wants me to
- 5:28prevent it is in a coma and can't talk. He say anything else?
- 5:31That's ring. He just kept saying, you've got to help me, Marlow.
- 5:34It's life and death. You know we can stir up an awful hornets
- 5:39match, poking our noses into seventy five thousand bucks worth of business we know
- 5:42nothing about. I doubt that we can do any good anyway, because we
- 5:46don't have enough to go on. He said anything else to even points Marlow.
- 5:50Oh wait a minute. He mumbles something once about a constantine. Constantine.
- 5:58Yes, it's some here. What is it about? I don't know,
- 6:00but at least it's a lead, isn't it anything else? No,
- 6:05Okay, where can I reach you? I'll be at my quarters. Press
- 6:09you five seven, five seven eight one, and keep track of stan Leyout's
- 6:13condition with him he comes out of it, talk to him. Only got
- 6:15three short hours. I'll call you, Corey. I felt a little weird
- 6:30as I left the hospital because I was traveling on strictly secondhand information as to
- 6:33what had gone on in a delirious mind. But in spite of that,
- 6:38there was still enough coherence in what Corey Riggs told me to make a case.
- 6:41I first stopped with a phone booth and a call to the police,
- 6:44but I found out in the accident report that stan Leyout was thirty, unmarried,
- 6:47small time lawyers, an LA resident with a clean police record. My
- 6:51next call was the Harbourmaster's office, San Pedro. Don't remember no vissel for
- 7:00that names mister mann Oliver up in the registry let she Constanta Constant Constantine only
- 7:13one listed is a foremasted schooner sunk off Pirates Point near Monterey in eighteen seventy,
- 7:18a little before my time. Not the one, eh, not the
- 7:21one. Oh. I tried the coast Guard. No fishing boat called Constantine
- 7:30on this coast Master's, followed by a check of yack Harbard Long Beach negative
- 7:35and a call of the pleasure boat anchorage is Pantamonica. No Constantine registered here,
- 7:41sir. After that along pupil reconnaissance of the waterfronts and went into the
- 7:46other left me one solid arm uttering, almost defendant, wearing in blind frustration
- 7:54at the black seating ocean below. I was licked. He ain't sinking and
- 8:01jumping in are you? You look like you lost your best friend? I
- 8:09did, but then me I was sunk with a Constantine in eighteen seven eight.
- 8:13Constantine's you know him too? Him? You mean Constantine's a guy chop.
- 8:18There's a shock there. Wait till the beacon light comes around again.
- 8:24Yeah, see that we'll be Prince Konstantine Chevnov alco chis promise and medium personal
- 8:31consultant by appointment only. Yeah, but that's face. He knows everybody around
- 8:37he even if they me for one bucket, and that's something. But he's
- 8:41a genuine Russian princess. Hey, hey, where are you going? I
- 8:46have a look. Prince Konstantine Chevnov could be my boy. He wouldn't want
- 8:50you losing around here. That's too glad Does he live here? Yeah,
- 8:56in the back he runs his pitch in the front where on in the blue
- 9:00curtains on? Huh? I suppose he always leaves the door unlocked? Hu
- 9:05would woopy? Is that? It's kind of funny? Yeah? Yeah,
- 9:09but it'd be a light switch here somebody. Oh yeah, now, let's
- 9:16see what? Oh ho catch good as a little wharf right darted through the
- 9:30door and scampered away into the darkness. I went over the body, faced
- 9:33up on the cheap, gaudy carpet of the sounds room. He was about
- 9:37thirty five in a substantial gray business suit, stayed red in front where the
- 9:41bullets had gone in. As Wallack was missing, there was no other identification
- 9:46on him. The gray's snap brim hat was spilled a few feet away,
- 9:50so I picked it up to look for initials and found and sent a small
- 9:54file card. Stuck into the sweatband tight to the top was beheading the mermaid
- 10:00owner Otis Vano and only relative Evelyn Vano and niece my maid's still November twelve,
- 10:05nineteen forty eight. Insurance paid in fool in ink. Vano and died
- 10:11August nineteen forty nine and under that in pencil. Constantine Chevna Venice, Pierre
- 10:16and Louis, Paradise, nine thirteen Seacrest Road, Pacific, Califaes. It's
- 10:22twenty minutes to find nine thirteen Seacress. And when I stopped and got close
- 10:26enough of what I saw through an open window made the Constantine chap I just
- 10:30left because what alabel is a post office by comparison with the miniature Egyptian temple,
- 10:35exotic and daities seckending lushness of red velvet and yellow silk, and at
- 10:39the center of the room with a bloated little man balancing a long cigarette holder
- 10:43in one hand, really simple than the one honey colored French hone in the
- 10:46other. I moved up quietly until I could hear him a sentimental agreement.
- 10:52Yeah it's right, Evan, Your uncle Otis and I were the best still
- 10:56friends for years. Wait to thank you, child? Where are you now?
- 11:03Oh? Deserve good good. I advise you to stay there until a
- 11:07few minutes before two. And aha, you will not forget to wear a
- 11:11plaid coat, just to be sure I won't make it the hike. Yeah.
- 11:18Now, suddenly, just like this gun going off, they find some
- 11:22interesting inside conversation about the mermaid. Probably, Oh, I'm glad to drop
- 11:30that one. But because I'd bump you for a nickel, say nothing to
- 11:31seven sad. I don't talk things over with punks. I reserve it for
- 11:37the head man. Go do something about it, okay, but I will
- 11:41go on under the dawn inside comparatis. Get some kind of kick out of
- 11:46stepping on big guys like you. The gop face shoved this automatic into a
- 11:50smaller my back and marched the inside the air respect with cheap insense, the
- 11:54bloated little king with a long cigarette holder. It stepped out, It came
- 11:58back fast, and the go for calling. He stared at me across the
- 12:01room. And it's not still flat, for instance, And he simp it
- 12:05again and sidled told me a gopher dug at my spine with his gun.
- 12:09Well, now what is this foodie snooping? Mister Paradise caught him outside picking
- 12:13in the window. Oh it is a bad night for a snooper? Who
- 12:18are you name? Smallow? And the business snooping? He knows about the
- 12:24man made miss Furders? He does, does he? How much do you
- 12:28know you got a fishtail instead of legs? You dare to joke, Dan,
- 12:35don't take a big man you ask for Make a move and I'll drop
- 12:39you. I know what you are, Marlowe, but not how much you
- 12:43have found out. Now tell me, because the next time I slapped you,
- 12:48it will carry more weight than my bare hand. I promise you.
- 12:50You have company, Paradise. No, you'll keep this babboon under control,
- 12:54Routie. I will last in the door. Oh how far do you think
- 13:03you can go with my reputation? Do you want to get me? Hang?
- 13:07What is the matter? Constantine? You are upset? Upset, I'm
- 13:11out of my mind. Oh what a shock and such a stupid thing for
- 13:15you to do. What are you raving about? You found that body on
- 13:18its front room floor, right, Constant, thine exactly precisely. And what
- 13:22is more, I did not put it there all the places in the world.
- 13:26Why did you pick this one paradise? This this stranger here? If
- 13:31you would close your mouth and open your eyes more often, prints, Constantine,
- 13:35you would not be the nervous wreck you are. These is, mister
- 13:41marlow another snoop, another one's paradise. That listened to me. It's better
- 13:46if we it's better if we don't try it tonight. It's up of hand.
- 13:48I don't like it. Now. We should get away and come back
- 13:52next year and do it. You'll jellyfish. There's nothing to worry about now.
- 13:56Insurance investigators are often working pairs. Is that not tomorrow? You're pitch
- 14:01run man. You don't need any help from me. You are so right,
- 14:05Rudy, and I caught the first of your place content. Now we
- 14:09have the second one here. That is all there are. The danger is
- 14:13over, its clear steeling. But what about that Cata. You have your
- 14:16audassiy to leave lying in my sus me constantly? That wasn't I am?
- 14:26It's going all the time. Yeah awful? And oh the Champagne came on
- 14:33to off. You can buy with the mermaids. I don't care, just
- 14:37the Briestnick. But at the same time it is seventy five thousand dollars worth
- 14:41of diamonds and Patino, okay, Pard, I trust you, no,
- 14:46we go my yes. And mister Paradise, what should I do with a
- 14:54big boy here? Yeah, you're kind of leaving a loose end around,
- 14:58aren't you. Feeding. If I had the time, Milo, I would
- 15:01beat the arrogance out of you a little chunk at a time. Ruddy.
- 15:05Yeah, you've got no initiative, but you do have imagination, so use
- 15:09it. Goodbye Milo. In just a moment, the second act of Philip
- 15:26marlow But first, it's a big break in entertainment for you, and a

- 16:07best of all, Nan carefully, here's the address. Eating now with our
- 16:17star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and tonight's
- 16:22story The Tale of the Mermaids. When Louis Paradise, hesitated at the door,
- 16:36snarled the suggestion that this who's his imagination and disposing of me and left
- 16:40in a lockstep with the white Russian screwball. I got the point. Even
- 16:44if I'd miss it entirely, one look in the brother Rudy's eyes would have
- 16:47done the trick. There were no pupils, just slits of lethal viciousness windows
- 16:52to his warped little mind, where I could practically see the montage going on
- 16:56that ran from ancient thumb screws by candlelight up to a generous beating by street
- 17:00lamp with brass nuts. I felt a cold nut growing the pit of my
- 17:04stomach. It was Rudy with a cannon in his hand, pointed as my
- 17:08head started toward me, and from someplace outside I got a break. Two
- 17:12romantic cats. Rudy spun toward the sound. One chance, so I customer,
- 17:18Rudy, and you'll miss Here's I'll pull your head off, not to
- 17:22gentle, so give it me. I don't want you to hurt yourself until
- 17:23we've had a chance to talk. That's it, no light time. I
- 17:29know there was some reason why I like cats their voices. Okay, Rudy,
- 17:32you've had enough rest. Now let's get back to business. Come on,
- 17:34get up, We're gonna talk. Wait, Hollo, please the reason
- 17:38for him my rough stuff? I'll that's better. We did Paradise in the
- 17:44tin his head for the ganazdo? Where is it? I don't know?
- 17:45Am I? You said there was no reason for rough I remember how Yeah,
- 17:51yeah, I remember that. I never heard of unhappy coincidence. Rudy,
- 17:56it's one thing I'm interested in. Wait, let's be something else you
- 18:00want to know. And I was like, could tell you the day.
- 18:03Hey, Hey, what are you going to do? I mean, you
- 18:04can't tell, Rudy. All it takes is a little imagination. Rudy,
- 18:18out of the way. I started through the place looking for all important answer
- 18:19to what was the ganazo? Twenty minutes of turning draws and closets inside out
- 18:25revealed nothing more exciting than Louis Paradise's adread's book First Names Only, and a
- 18:30picture of a girl named Toodles who belonged to the Roaring twenties. And by
- 18:33this time you should have caught a death of cold. His sister, no
- 18:37dog put no lead on the gnalz doough. So, on the slim chance
- 18:41of my clients, stan Leyott might already be back in this world and able
- 18:44to help. I got outside into my car and drove to the first drug
- 18:48store we're after checking the phone books under everything from boss to bath houses for
- 18:51a Gnaldo and getting no place. I called Coley Riggs at the nurses home.
- 18:56No, Marlo stan Leott's still unconscious. I just talk at the night
- 19:00nurse on his floor. They expect him to come out of it soon.
- 19:03Why what happened? Oh? Too much to explain now, Corey. But
- 19:07that girl, the one in the plaid code. I found out that her
- 19:10name's Evelyn Van Oh. And then she's staying at the Surf Hotel. Now
- 19:12see if that much checked with out when he comes to wild Oh. Also,
- 19:17there's a diamond studded item called the Mermaid, which accounts for that seventy
- 19:21five thousand. He mentioned a constantine in the pier. Now equal a phony
- 19:25Russian prince who runs a spook palace out on the old Venice piers. You
- 19:29got all that? H good? Look, honey, listen real hat.
- 19:33Before Rod passed out, did he by any chance say the word gnado?
- 19:37Yeah? No, What does it mean? I don't know. I think
- 19:41it's the name of a place. Oh, have you checked the phone book.
- 19:45Yeah, yeah, no, dice Corey. Also, I check one,
- 19:48mister louis Paradise. So you might mention, Marl, wait a minute.
- 19:51Where there's a girl here, one of the nurses who's trying to tell
- 19:53me something. It's the canasto Marlo, Wait a minute, she knows something
- 20:00about it here, it's it's Rosemary. You talk to her. Hello.
- 20:03Oh you want to know what nas tho mean? Yeah, when it's Russian,
- 20:08not poshlea maaic No though, so well what does it mean in English?
- 20:14Rosemary? Fast? Please? Is important? Well? That means let's
- 20:17go to my place. Naso's the word for nest, sort of like cozy
- 20:22apartment, cottage, my place. Are you sure that I'm positive? I
- 20:27was an army nursing the war, and I spent two years in Germany after
- 20:32the shooting. Park was over two years a half a block away from the
- 20:36Russian zone. That's close enough. Thanks a million, Rosemary. I don't
- 20:38mention it is Krey Oh do Itmorrow? Yeah? I think so at any
- 20:45rate unless I'm way off basis where both the Mermaid and all parties concerned are
- 20:48going to Rendez. But at two am, that's less than a half off
- 20:52now the Prince's place on the piers want to be earlies, So goodbye,
- 20:55Corey. I'll call again when I know more. Yeah, and give my
- 20:57everlasting love to grow and Rosebery. She all is show a peach. And
- 21:11there was still a few parts missing the way they're always because I drove fast
- 21:15for the old Venice Pier and added as I went along it came out something
- 21:18like the theme of Paradise and Prince watch you McCall it ready willing and able
- 21:22to pay seventy five grand for a piece of jewelry that one Evelyn van Owen
- 21:26now own a mermaid, which, according to the data I had found on
- 21:30the insurance man's body, had once been stolen from Evelyn's late uncle. But
- 21:36I left it there when my rear view mirrors had a long gray sir Dan
- 21:40that has been tagging me discreetly for the last three blocks, now being indelicate
- 21:44about it and closing fast. The driver was old cal Rudy, and he
- 21:48became a breast. He hit it for me. All right, all right,
- 22:00you're rokay your rokay mac. Don't you worry about a thing. We'll
- 22:04have you out of there in a minute. And hey, can't you knock
- 22:07out that horse? Knock out the horn? He says, what do you
- 22:11think we're trying to thank? So we should get my hond passage preaching hood?
- 22:15No oh, oh that's better. Hey, hey, Cabby, what
- 22:21I hit? Well? In the order of their parents? Mac, your
- 22:25car into a telephone pole, and then you went to your nation board.
- 22:27You're sure lucky abound shout the car person, load your down plenty. Oh
- 22:33hey, here comes the ogular. Not for me. I'm all right,
- 22:37Hey, come on, kebby, help me out of this when it sure,
- 22:40that's what we're trying to do. But don't you worry. The ambulance
- 22:42things for you. But a guy that sideswiped in and then tried to get
- 22:45away. I see what happen, and I went after him and we cam.
- 22:48He turned into a dead end, though less trying to shake me.
- 22:52Is he a mess? But I guess he'll live, all right? Hey,
- 22:56what you got against you? Anyhow? Mac? That's my life,
- 22:59let's and your CAB's still all right? Sure, at some place you gotta
- 23:02go. There is the old Venice concessions here, my friend, And the
- 23:04sooner the better come on. Leaving my head against the dashboard was exactly what
- 23:14I needed, because right then and there the method of Rudy's handy work made
- 23:17me think of an angle that I neglected almost completely. My unconscious client had
- 23:21not wanted me to get the Mermaid or the cheventy five thousand bucks. Had
- 23:25to stop Evelyn from keeping harondevoom, which at this point I figured to mean
- 23:29but one thing. It exactly two o'clock from the cap slammed to stop near
- 23:33the pier. I piled out and ran out of the empty fox damp and
- 23:37flanking that led to Prince constantly and checked nothing but mist moved over the pier.
- 23:41No unusual sound broke the pattern of water front noises, but I thought
- 23:45momentarily that I was still in time to prevent what Stanley out somehow knew was
- 23:49going to happen. But lowis Paradise and his eccentric side kick intended to get
- 23:53the Mermaid from Evelyn pay off, and only one one way. I ran
- 24:04to the rear of the shack on skilts and got close to the half open
- 24:07door where I could see him here and found out just what I'd expected.
- 24:11The storeroom spread out and very still on the oil so planks, that were
- 24:14a makeshift floor with a life of pawn a girl well according to the plaid
- 24:18Kochy War, with the late Epil and van Oen kneeling close to a gun
- 24:22in one hand, the sparkling mermaid and the other her executioner Louis Paradise.
- 24:27I stay him. His number one boy, Prince Konstantine Chevnov's very happy.
- 24:33He was stupid, yees, even five grands stupid. How would you have
- 24:40preferred that I paim Is van in Cash. I had to kill her,
- 24:44yes, yes, yes, but a dice. But the gun so much
- 24:47noise. We can't afford to attract that. Then there's two cops is on
- 24:49hand. I should say not. They don't try the mermaid his face between
- 24:57the boards, Oh in the water. You have no shame? Yeah,
- 25:06you see, it's a shame. We did so much, worked so hard,
- 25:11Yeah, killed so often, and I run for it, your highness
- 25:17run No, No dice is dead there without bad dice. I am not
- 25:23so brave. I would just seep quiet, don't make a sound. You
- 25:27know we got company. H pardon me? Can you please tell me where
- 25:34Louis Paradise can be? And Chloe Paradise there who are you then on,
- 25:44then on the woman who was supposed to tell the mermaid to paradise. That's
- 25:48right. But on my way over here, just after I left my hotel,
- 25:52somebody struck me, knocked me out, sut my my coach there and
- 25:56my person rans with a mermaid, no doubt. Yes, and that miss
- 26:03fan Owen makes this angle shooter here? Yeah, very dead, Nurse Cory
- 26:11Riggs, let's get out of here. There's nothing to worry about, Miss
- 26:27Lena. Stanley's going to be all right. I'm so happy. Why don't
- 26:33women always cry when they're so happy? I don't know, but it's well.
- 26:37I'll run along now, goodbye bye. Do you know, mister Marlowe,
- 26:44when I was in the Stanley's room with the doctor, stand said he
- 26:47didn't lose control of his car at all when he had that accident in front
- 26:49of your place. He was run off the road, Dan, I know
- 26:53because I had the same treatment one of Louis Paradixes henchman Rudy, Honey,
- 27:00I'll walk, yes, just outside the front door. Tell me. Did
- 27:03I tell you why Rudy rushed him up? Yes? In a way,
- 27:08you see, I told Stanley about the deal with the mermaids, and he
- 27:11thought it all sounded a little phony. I can't understand why. He's a
- 27:15lawyer, you know, legal type mind. He said meeting anyone at two
- 27:19in the morning was ridiculous. So he investigated as much as he could because
- 27:25he was worried about me. We're engaged here. I never would engage.
- 27:30And he found out that mister Paradise was a fence and Stam said that probably
- 27:34he never intended to give me the seventy five thousand dollars for the mermaid at
- 27:37all, but they intended to kill me. Here we are. Tell me
- 27:42why did you get in touch with Paradise in the first place? Just following
- 27:45Uncle Otis's instructions. He gave me the mermaids when he was dying, and
- 27:48he told me if I wanted money, to sell it only to a mister
- 27:52Paradise, but not to mention it to anyone. Your uncle fake the robbery,
- 27:56collected the insurance money and then let you sell the mermaid to offense.
- 27:59Huh. It's lucky for you that Nurse Corey Riggs was clever. She put
- 28:03together just enough of others. Is gibberish to know that there was something good
- 28:06to be had, and then got me to unravel it for her. She
- 28:07got killed when she tried to collect your seventy five thousand bucks. Yeah,
- 28:15oh, here's my car, my love. Then a little while you were
- 28:21a rich woman. Now it's all God, how do you feel it?
- 28:26I'm alive and his mom. Yes, well that answers my question. Good
- 28:32night, baby, and good luck. When I left the hospital, I
- 28:47wanted back to the old Venice Pea and Prince Constantine Nozo. But five in
- 28:52the morning and the police had finished clinging the place up, but the word
- 28:56had gotten out. Crowded gathered they always do, curious, restless sort of
- 29:02cloud, equipped with everything from grappling hooks to homemade diving helmets, all climbing
- 29:07over each other for a chance to fish for the mermaids. She who had
- 29:11brought death to three people injuryed to others in the course of one night.
- 29:17I suppose they found them. What then? A lot of glittering pieces of
- 29:22white coal set in a metal frame we call precious Look at the Sucker's grand
- 29:30That's all marlow Home and the Dead. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe bringing you

- 30:48It comes to you on most of these CBS stations for the first time
- 30:52Tomorrow night, making its debut on CBS the same night as Red Skelton and
- 30:56Edgar Bergan and Charles McCarthy. This fall. You hear them all on CBS.
- 31:03This is Paul Masterson speaking, I'll stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows
- 31:08immediately over most of these same CBS stations. This is CBS the Columbia Bloodcasting
- 31:18System. Welcome back. Well I love this episode. Nice little mystery with
- 31:37Marlow not even knowing who his client is or what the case is all about
- 31:42because of the car accident, and an interesting plug for traffic safety statistics as
- 31:49well as a solid twist ending with the nurse being the one to get killed.
- 31:55All right, Well, on to some listener comments and feedback. All
- 32:00right, so I really enjoy your podcast, Lisa says, once again,
- 32:06thank you for hosting the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio podcast. It's my
- 32:12absolute favorite podcast. I enjoy the variety of shows in your commentary as well.
- 32:16Keep up the great work. Well, thanks so much, Lisa.
- 32:20And then I also have a note from Gene who says, really enjoy your
- 32:24show, well, thanks so much. And then we also have a review
- 32:29on iTunes of a somewhat different tenor. The shows are really good and Adam
- 32:35does a good job finding them and putting them out there for us, but
- 32:38his ideas and thoughts of each show is rather boring and tedious. It shows
- 32:43though, just skip the host. Okay, well, thanks for leaving your
- 32:46comment, and fair enough, the commentary is not compulsatory. Oh and one
- 32:52thing I did forget to mention on the show, and since we're actually pretty
- 32:55brief here, you also saw her a little bit of evidence in this program
- 33:00of what the big talent rate of the late forties continuing as the premiere of
- 33:07The Red Skelton Show was announced over CBS, and Skelton had been a big
- 33:12star over at NBC. CBS was grabbing a lot of the talent, particularly
- 33:17the musical and comedy talent. NBC still had some things going on here in
- 33:22nineteen forty nine. They still had Faber McGee and Molly, Bob Hope and
- 33:27the Great Gilder Sleeve as well as the Life of Riley, but CBS was
- 33:30taking a lot of talent and a lot of very well known stars over to
- 33:36CBS. And all of this followed the move of Jack Benny over to CBS.
- 33:40So Skelton, of course, very well beloved comedian, actually played a
- 33:45radio detective in a series of movies, and we'll get to one of those
- 33:50eventually, the screen Gold Theater adaptation. But Skelton, even though his radio
- 33:55show was on CBS, would start his television career on MBA before that too
- 34:00went to CBS. But any rate, that's all for the on the commercials.
- 34:05We'll see you back here tomorrow for Nick Carter, and next Wednesday it'll
- 34:09be Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at
