Latest / Easy Double podcast / EDP35: New Irish Marathon Record / Dublin & Amsterdam Marathon Preview / Double Trouble / Training & Race Weeks
Transcript
- 0:16Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double podcast episode 35.
- 0:20We are recording on the unusual time slot of a Saturday
- 0:24afternoon in Perth and a Saturday morning in Dublin,
- 0:28Ireland, because Owen Smith is racing a cross country race
- 0:31tomorrow afternoon, so he's actually pursuing his running
- 0:35career rather than his podcasting career.
- 0:38Yeah, guys. Thanks Sir.
- 0:39Thanks for changing it for me. I wouldn't like to, even though
- 0:42I'll do really enjoy recording the podcast on a Sunday morning
- 0:45before a race. I sort of just like to have some
- 0:48me time and yeah, not be chatting and shit to you guys
- 0:51basically. Yeah, there's a time for
- 0:53overthinking and reflecting, and in the morning of the race,
- 0:56that's not the time, is it? No, another little shake guys to
- 0:58do. And yeah, just a little routine.
- 1:02And recording a podcast isn't in that routine.
- 1:04Yes. So no, thank you.
- 1:06Yeah, good. Well, I'm, I'm glad that we got
- 1:07to speak to you the day before the race to find out what your
- 1:11thoughts are and what your plan is for the for the race.
- 1:13So I'm sure we'll get to that later.
- 1:14I think the last time we done this I ran that race in
- 1:18Tasmania, so yeah, that didn't go well.
- 1:22No, we've left that one in the past.
- 1:24And also John knows is Dean, who's I'm going to assume pulled
- 1:28up okay off the bike ride that we've done this morning,
- 1:31although he did text me saying he was having a nap before.
- 1:33So whether that's contributed to that?
- 1:35I I was a little bit tired after this mornings ride.
- 1:38Probably the the worst thing that I pulled up from I put some
- 1:41shorts on after my nap and they're they're a bit tight
- 1:43around the quad. So I'm a bit nervous about all
- 1:45this cycling. Maybe it's having not the the
- 1:48the. Change in your body composition.
- 1:50Something's changing. Whether or not it's yeah,
- 1:52there's some. There is a body composition
- 1:54change for sure. I'm a bit tired as well myself,
- 1:57but I couldn't work out if it was because we were maybe trying
- 2:00to like bury each other amongst the rest of the the leading
- 2:04group or because I had a few beers last night, but probably
- 2:07somewhere in the middle. Probably a bit of both, I would
- 2:09say. Yeah, it.
- 2:10Was good fun though, wasn't it? It was great.
- 2:12Yeah, I glad Owen's racing tomorrow because otherwise we'd
- 2:16probably be getting swept up talking all sorts of nonsense.
- 2:19But no, look, that's my first formal group ride.
- 2:22So Owen, for context, I joined Ryan with these on the on the
- 2:26group ride this morning and it was a lot of fun.
- 2:28We did start in the second group.
- 2:30Somehow Ryan disappeared and that's because he joined the
- 2:34front group, but fortunately someone in their group had a
- 2:36mechanical so I managed to meet up with him again.
- 2:39I thought it was going to be a bit more social than what it
- 2:41was, but it was the IT was a bit competitive at times, which is
- 2:46probably not a bad thing. Are we, are we going to have a
- 2:48name change to like easy paddle or something like that, A knock
- 2:52off series? Yeah.
- 2:53Maybe there's a market for it somewhere, but it's certainly
- 2:55not our audience. So we need to probably remember
- 2:58that. I actually enjoy the cycle chat.
- 3:00It's so it's so different and like you can't sort of relate it
- 3:03back to running. So it's, I think, yeah, it's
- 3:05nice to hear and you guys and your how your training is
- 3:07different and how you're keeping fit and yeah, it's.
- 3:09Cool, we did. I'm enjoying the learn inside of
- 3:12it. Like you just get exposed to
- 3:14different perspectives and different points of view on
- 3:17training and stuff. Like one of the guys were saying
- 3:20he fell off and broke his neck like a few years ago.
- 3:22And you think, fuck, I wasn't kind of aware that these are
- 3:26some of the risks that come when you're getting involved in these
- 3:28group rides. So we're think we're looking
- 3:31after our bodies by not running when really we're we're exposed
- 3:35to a whole another level of risk.
- 3:37Where the group as well is quite good.
- 3:40There's some really good etiquette in terms of like
- 3:42cycling etiquette in terms of signalling on the road and
- 3:45signalling as you sort of rolling turns and those sorts of
- 3:49things. And so we just finished chatting
- 3:50to a couple of guys and they sort of told us about some very
- 3:52serious accidents. And then Ryan's like, oh, the
- 3:54front group's so much better. None of this like all of this
- 3:57verbal communication rubbish, like don't need any of this sort
- 4:01of stuff. And like our groups, like
- 4:03they're all very polite and they're all, a lot of them a bit
- 4:05older and I think very safety conscious, I think would say
- 4:09particularly conservative when it came to that sort of stuff.
- 4:12And I think yeah, wasn't all well received.
- 4:14I would I would liken it to this Owens.
- 4:16It's being in the second group would be like being on an on a
- 4:20road with like 30 mile an hour speed limit.
- 4:22And then when you join the front group, it's like you got on the
- 4:25motorway and you just put your foot down and go.
- 4:26For it, yeah, Yeah. OK, OK, OK.
- 4:29You wouldn't. You wouldn't be happy in that
- 4:30second group either. But I think it's not start like
- 4:35years is you're actually going like mid like like 3536
- 4:39kilometers an hour. And like in a car you don't feel
- 4:42that because I know you're surrounded by a load of metal.
- 4:45But like when you're actually on the bike, if you hit something
- 4:48like you're just getting thrown, thrown away.
- 4:50So, umm, it's another thing you don't really think about until
- 4:54you're actually like a cyclist tells you about an accident or
- 4:56something. Yeah.
- 4:57Yeah, no, yeah. Well, one of the one of the
- 4:59guys, his worst accident was down Welshpool Rd., which is
- 5:02what we were riding down a couple of weeks ago.
- 5:04And I think he broke his ribs, wrists, collarbone, punctured
- 5:07lung, et cetera, all that sort of thing.
- 5:09And not his fault either, which is why you're so reliant on the
- 5:12group. And I think so the group we
- 5:14joined today was a suggestion, I think of rafts and Coco was down
- 5:17there as well. So someone else who's cross
- 5:19training while she recovers from a stress fracture.
- 5:22So I think he's careful in terms of suggesting who we go to.
- 5:25And you can sort of say that they're all pretty seasoned
- 5:27riders, which I think from a safety perspective makes it a
- 5:30bit easier. Yeah, we were picking up some
- 5:32pace though. I think we averaged near 35 KS
- 5:35an hour for the SO65K loop. But yeah, really nice morning
- 5:40for it. So it's been good.
- 5:41Are you taking gels on them? Like are you fueling?
- 5:43I yeah, so I had two bottles of beaks and a gel.
- 5:48Ryan just raw dogs. I think he just he often rocks
- 5:51out without even a bottle. I'm probably not taking the
- 5:54nutrition or the fuel in as serious as it would if it was a
- 5:58run because I'm like, Oh well, it doesn't like deplete you to
- 6:02the point of exhaustion. And then I'll just get a coffee
- 6:04and a muffin afterwards and then kind of levels out.
- 6:08These people are all like in all the gear, really like flash
- 6:12crafts. And then Ryan just comes in just
- 6:16like it's a bit of it, like a skivvy and like just pair of
- 6:19shorts and just like, hey, how are you pair pair of 1080s and
- 6:23then just drop them. Chain came off today and then at
- 6:28a junction that was panic stations as well because they
- 6:31they don't wait for you. That was so.
- 6:32What did you do? We're rolling turns and he went
- 6:35to like clip in and just push through and it's just completely
- 6:39come off. I didn't know if you knew how to
- 6:41put it back on. Were you Have you I?
- 6:42Didn't know either. It's easy if you start going
- 6:47backward, isn't it? No, you have to push down.
- 6:49Upside down. And then I was like, oh shit,
- 6:52I'm doing this in the middle of the roads.
- 6:53Then I had to like, scurry off to the little pedestrian island
- 6:57and thankfully it went on like first time.
- 7:00And then there was yeah, I was about 3 or 4 minutes of burying
- 7:02myself to find Dean's wheel. I told them all to slow down.
- 7:07That's a good teammate. Anyway, let's get let's get back
- 7:10into the running podcast. On the afloat chat from last
- 7:15week, we received a couple of different perspectives, which is
- 7:18good because it was kind of which I was alluding to, like
- 7:21maybe it was a little bit narrow minded and not informed on all
- 7:24these different views. So thanks to Joe and Kat Watts
- 7:28who wrote in and actually agree with what they said.
- 7:30So Joe says maybe it's more so to inspire women in athletics in
- 7:34general, face different challenges to men like
- 7:37pregnancy, periods, etcetera. And it's just to shine some
- 7:40limelight solely on women and show them that it is possible.
- 7:44And Kat made a really good point, said she agreed with us
- 7:47almost. She said maybe it's not
- 7:49warranted at the top level and that men and women are seen as
- 7:52equal, but there is probably room for it amongst amateur
- 7:55running. So like maybe women face
- 7:57barriers to entry more so than men.
- 7:59And you see that kind of reflected in the start lists and
- 8:02numbers of women participating in these mixed gender races.
- 8:06So maybe if they had women's only races at recreation or
- 8:10amateur level would be more uptake in that.
- 8:13So didn't look at it from that point of view.
- 8:15Agree. In Ireland there's this thing
- 8:17called the women's like mini marathon, which is like it's a
- 8:2410K race and they call it a mini marathon, which I don't see why,
- 8:30but yeah, it's just like for women it's just like a big
- 8:35charity fundraiser and yes, like it's a really, really good day
- 8:38out. But so there is women's only
- 8:41events out there. And I feel like I do feel sorry
- 8:43for on the start lines because like men always, I don't know,
- 8:46like just step jump up the front and like, like it is dangerous
- 8:50on the start line sometimes. I remember was it Launceston and
- 8:54who was in front of me? It was 2 like Aussie athletes.
- 8:58It would have been Jen Gregson and someone else.
- 9:01She runs with Adidas, forget her name anyway, but like they were
- 9:06like, it was early man crowd. And then the two of them and
- 9:08like, they are, they should be up the front because like
- 9:11they're two of the best women there.
- 9:14But they turn around. I was behind them and they're
- 9:16like, please don't cross me. And it's something like, I don't
- 9:19even think of that. So yeah, it's there's
- 9:24definitely, I can see why it's there.
- 9:26So yeah. I think yeah, in Perth we have
- 9:28like a like a women's classic 10K fun run as well.
- 9:31And there's like a women's only triathlon as well.
- 9:35And I've and I think, yeah, similar comments.
- 9:38It's the same for there's a like they've there was or I think
- 9:42there still is. I think it's called Fresh, like
- 9:44a women's front runner training group, like a women's only
- 9:47training group as well. And I think, again, it's about
- 9:50creating an environment where people feel safe and comfortable
- 9:53participating. And it's a nice entry.
- 9:55And so I think, yeah, that's a good point around feeling
- 9:58included or feeling safe. And by putting on those events,
- 10:01you're probably more likely to encourage people to give it a
- 10:04go. Because even if you think of it
- 10:06from a personal point of view, like when you're stood on the
- 10:08start line maybe, and you you're feeling like everyone around you
- 10:11is a better ability than you, that's intimidating in itself,
- 10:15let alone when you're like one woman of 10 males or something.
- 10:20Yeah, and you get that vibe, particularly in athletics when
- 10:23it comes to track racing. I feel like a road race or even
- 10:27cross country. I feel like Rd. racing is very
- 10:29like everyone's included and accepted and then it starts to
- 10:33get a bit more, it feels a bit more releases, particularly in
- 10:36like in, in, in some of these Perth these races.
- 10:40I see other events where they grade them and grade them
- 10:44effectively. And I think that's what we
- 10:46should learn to do. Because I think then you're
- 10:48putting people in similar abilities together and you're
- 10:51setting an expectation for a participant that whatever time
- 10:54they're going to be running is appropriate for the event
- 10:56they're entering. Whereas we don't get a lot of
- 10:59participation because we don't make it as inclusive as what it
- 11:03could be. No thanks.
- 11:04So before we get into this week's agenda, just the last
- 11:07kind of acknowledgement from last week.
- 11:09And we spoke about the Perth Running Festival quite a bit, so
- 11:13won't go into it too much, but apparently there were no
- 11:16finisher T-shirts for the participants either, which is
- 11:20another bit of a strange one really.
- 11:22But yeah, on the WA Running Podcast, one of the guys there,
- 11:25Chris, he paced it on the day and the other Co host Vicky was
- 11:29out on the bike. So they done a really
- 11:31comprehensive review of the Perth Running Festival as well.
- 11:34So if you want to kind of cross check what we've said or get
- 11:38some more insight, then encourage you to listen to that
- 11:40as well. So this week then, as we have
- 11:42gone early, we've got a preview from the Dublin Marathon and the
- 11:46Amsterdam Marathon, which happened tomorrow.
- 11:49We Dublin's next week, Dublin's next week.
- 11:53Yeah, OK. We still do the preview, I guess
- 11:55last week. Owen, thanks for jumping on and
- 11:57doing the little Chicago recap at the end solo.
- 12:01That was my sole digestion of the results and what happened
- 12:04out on course. So thanks for being so detailed
- 12:07and informative there. Maybe we'll have a little chat
- 12:09about that. No, yeah, it's good.
- 12:11No, I did forget Galen rope and who has Matt such who is central
- 12:16wits them to big names. But now I sort of like, so it,
- 12:20you know, who was it? My fox used to do a solo.
- 12:24And I just kept on thinking it up because, like, you're sort of
- 12:27asking questions and answering them yourself in a way.
- 12:29So no, it was actually, it was actually all right.
- 12:32Yeah. Because I don't know, How long
- 12:33did you speak for? It was maybe between 5 and 10
- 12:35minutes, wasn't it? So it wasn't just like a little
- 12:3732nd headline. Yeah, it's crazy how much time
- 12:41it actually like takes up when you're just like, talking to
- 12:44yourself. It's like it was on.
- 12:46Wasn't too bad. Could get used to it.
- 12:49It could just be you if it was just a running podcast at the
- 12:51minute, couldn't it so. I remember the first time I'd
- 12:55done it, I can't remember what it was.
- 12:56I was adding something in and you feel like very aware that
- 13:01you're just speaking to yourself or and because it's only you at
- 13:04that very moment. Like I guess people who are
- 13:06listening don't really know this, but you're just like all
- 13:09of the like attention and focuses on what I'm saying right
- 13:12now and you've got no like kind of support from the Co hosts.
- 13:16But then once you do it once you almost like forget about that
- 13:19elements of it and you just chat and shift anyway.
- 13:22You're just looking at the camera and it's just like you on
- 13:25the screen, you know, I have two other faces to look at for, you
- 13:28know, I could get used to it. It could be a bit more how Ryan
- 13:31feels each weight, given that he sort of drives the creative
- 13:35process and the agenda and we just come here to shoot the
- 13:39shit, really. Shit, yeah.
- 13:41Yeah, well, you know, I am reassured when you do the edit,
- 13:45it gives each of our names like a colour on the sound bar.
- 13:49And sometimes I go into it with like a preconception, like, oh,
- 13:52I'm constantly speaking compared to you 2 So I'm conscious in
- 13:56certain moments to like shut up and let you 2 speak.
- 13:59But then often on the bar, I think it is kind of like
- 14:02distributed quite well. So we'll see, right?
- 14:04And let us know, do I need to shut up?
- 14:07Do these two need to speak more? What what's it received like to
- 14:10you guys? I do zone out every now and
- 14:13then, which I certainly need to stop.
- 14:16My brain just goes into a totally different topic.
- 14:18So yeah. You're there when it counts.
- 14:22So yeah, a bit of a different format.
- 14:24We'll have Owens pre race build up and a bit of a plan for the
- 14:27race day tomorrow. We haven't heard about Dean's
- 14:30training in a couple of weeks because he was salivant around
- 14:33Melbourne last week and we've got a few discussion points as
- 14:37well. So I guess, yeah, let's start
- 14:39with Chicago because that did happen last week.
- 14:41And if you follow the sport as closely as we do, you would have
- 14:44consumed some content on that by now anyway.
- 14:47So we won't waste too much time. But I guess the headline is it
- 14:51was Korea versus Kapliemo and we're making some calls on that
- 14:54career. Ended up DNF and didn't he
- 14:56because he was pushing the pace from halfway, like beyond world
- 15:00record pace and Mr. Jacob Kaplimo got the job done in the
- 15:05end. Just about hanging on despite
- 15:07signs of a blower. My man I think pulled up pulled
- 15:10off didn't he did DNF. Yeah, Mr. Mr. Korea, was it like
- 15:1430 K maybe or something even beyond that?
- 15:16I. Think it was yeah, because he
- 15:17made a move I think after the pacemakers dropped out and he
- 15:20was looking looking good. But I think Bert too many
- 15:22matches and yeah, not my insights, but insights I did
- 15:27hear on the Real Science of Sport podcast was just around so
- 15:32you know, like the lactate curve and we we talk about LT1LT2 and
- 15:37the marathon sort of sits between those two points, LT1
- 15:40and LT2. But just an observation was I
- 15:43think the first 5K was in 1358, which is 57 pace for the
- 15:48marathon. So like and yeah, the, the host
- 15:52made of interesting observation, which is, you know, that that
- 15:55lactate curve, there's points on it becomes exponential.
- 15:58And so the cost, therefore, I think if you're going above say
- 16:03LT2 in particular or, or even up to the, the, the sort of the,
- 16:07the energy cost, it's going to be close to exponential.
- 16:10I think so because I'm pretty sure isn't it hydrogen ions that
- 16:13are produced as a function of effort or fuel burning is what
- 16:17is the lactate score. And so I'm pretty sure if you're
- 16:21burning, it's so you're going to see, you're going to just burn
- 16:23too many matches. And perhaps what those guys were
- 16:26were didn't race as well as what they could have had they run a
- 16:30more even race. And I think even Conor Mance
- 16:32made a similar comment. Didn't he run like a 4:30 first
- 16:34mile? And I think maybe, I think maybe
- 16:37that cost them. I think maybe they got a bit too
- 16:39excited and it might not have been the perfect distribution
- 16:42of. Yeah, I think the guy you're
- 16:44referring to maybe Ross Tucker, he'd done a tweet, didn't he?
- 16:48Something along the lines of like if you cross beyond
- 16:51threshold too early in the marathon, it's like taking out a
- 16:54loan where the the interest payments are going to come back
- 16:57and bite you. Yeah.
- 16:58And the Steve Scully, and do you remember his analogy as well,
- 17:03where you start the marathon with a bag of like a hessian bag
- 17:06of sand on your shoulder and you sort of need to carry that with
- 17:09you, and then you're basically just taking a knife to it.
- 17:12And that's your energy reserve. And you just, every time you go
- 17:14above that, you're basically cutting a hole in that.
- 17:17So instead of it just slowly seeping out, it's just you're
- 17:19just, yeah, running out of energy.
- 17:21I thought about this whether at what point I could include this,
- 17:25but how do you think about this analogy?
- 17:27Because we've talked about like VO2 Max and lactate threshold
- 17:31LT2 and stuff quite a bit and maybe we have a bit of a clear
- 17:36understanding of what it means in our own heads.
- 17:39But maybe listeners, it doesn't mean all that too much to.
- 17:43So I'm sure I can't remember where I had this from, but I
- 17:47have picked it up back in the day and it was like VO2 Max is
- 17:51basically like think of it as a petrol tank or a fuel tank.
- 17:54And the higher VO2 Max, the bigger fuel tank that you have.
- 17:58And your threshold is like kind of how much you can fill that
- 18:03fuel tank or like you fill it up full tank or you fill it up half
- 18:07a tank, then you've got a lower threshold than someone else.
- 18:09And then so that I think I've taken that from someone else.
- 18:12I'm not going to try and claim that as my own analogy, but I
- 18:15also thought of how easy double could fit into that because
- 18:19maybe some people haven't heard us explain what easy double,
- 18:23what an easy double is. So it would maybe be like going
- 18:26to the petrol station on a Tuesday when the fuel prices are
- 18:29lower and putting in $20 one Tuesday and $20 the next
- 18:34Tuesday, rather than going on a Wednesday and putting in $50
- 18:38when it's like $2.00 a litre and you're just being a bit more
- 18:42economical. I thought it was just a second
- 18:44run in the day. Slightly overcomplicated that,
- 18:47haven't I? Or a second ride for us at the
- 18:49minute. OK, yeah, we'll take us out.
- 18:52What you will. Maybe nothing.
- 18:54Back to the Chicago chess. Meanwhile, Owen's thinking about
- 18:57his race tomorrow. We've lost him.
- 18:59Why have I gotten up to talk about filling up Patrick?
- 19:04Why is Ryan keep talking about cycling and petrol?
- 19:06By the way, talking about the petrol, that's not that that's
- 19:09even a thing important on a Tuesday.
- 19:11It's so much cheaper than every other day, like it's only in
- 19:13Perth. Everywhere else in the world
- 19:15it's like a Rob every single day of the week, whereas in Perth
- 19:17it's actually cheaper. You don't have that.
- 19:19You don't have cheap juice. In Ireland it's expensive every
- 19:22day. No, I did.
- 19:25I did find that bizarre. At first I thought it was a bit
- 19:27of a myth until like, you obviously experience it and see
- 19:30the prices like fluctuate math genuinely massively, don't they?
- 19:34Like it's a good 1020 cent, isn't it?
- 19:36More and also on on the news, like of an evening, they'll tell
- 19:39you what the fuel price is going to be for the next day.
- 19:42Yeah, that's not a thing. No, it's definitely not a thing.
- 19:45So how? How much in euro is a litre at
- 19:48the minute? For diesel it's around one year
- 19:52so this is cheap. This is a cheap place I go to.
- 19:55With the cheap place you actually don't know if it's a
- 19:56watered down or not like in Ireland.
- 19:58I'd say the average price is like one.
- 20:01It's between 169 and 159 euro. Wow.
- 20:05That's more expensive than here. It's a joke.
- 20:09You have no idea. Yeah, and that's diesel, not
- 20:11unleaded. That's diesel.
- 20:13Yeah, well. So then do you fill up with
- 20:15diesel, Dean? I don't know what the diesel
- 20:17prices are like. No, but they're not too
- 20:19different to like unleaded fuel prices, but they're under $2.00
- 20:23Aussie, which like what's an Aussie dollar to euro what we
- 20:27almost 2 Aussie dollars to €1.00 at the minute.
- 20:30So there you go. Where is the unit price is about
- 20:33the same. So yeah, that's considerably
- 20:35more expensive over there. Price we'll, we'll end the
- 20:37petrol chat there, but there you go.
- 20:39There's some context for listeners who might be tuning in
- 20:42in either Island or Australia and learning something knew
- 20:45about the other country there. Or what our podcast means.
- 20:50Connor Mance got the new area records, taken it away from our
- 20:54interviewee Cam Levens. He ran 204.
- 20:58What was the exact seconds, 43 maybe or something, which kind
- 21:03of, I think everyone was. It's weird going into a record
- 21:07attempt for it to be like expected to do something that's
- 21:10never been done before. Like he's genuinely just become
- 21:14the fastest non African marathoner in history.
- 21:18And it's almost like it was presumed, well, it was presumed
- 21:21that he was going to do it. And it was more so like how fast
- 21:24could he go? Like, how does it get to the
- 21:26point where it's like normalized that someone's going to do
- 21:29something that's never been done before?
- 21:31It's quite bizarre, isn't it? But.
- 21:32The training he was rolling out was just like, he's fit.
- 21:36He's so, so fit. And he puts it all on Strava,
- 21:39too, which is pretty cool. Hey, so like, you've literally
- 21:41got the best marathoner in history and it's all documented
- 21:46all like all there for people to consume.
- 21:49It's pretty, pretty rare that you see, you see that?
- 21:52I think I'm pretty cool. Kali Thackery, who was the
- 21:55British representative over there, at least on the woman's
- 21:58field, she ended up with a DNF and it prompted a thought.
- 22:01I don't know what your opinions are.
- 22:03Are more people than ever DNF and right now, like ratio wise,
- 22:08as in like percentage of starters?
- 22:10Or is it just because maybe more people full stop are running
- 22:13marathons and therefore volume is up because of the higher
- 22:17participant race? Do you mean I?
- 22:19Think I think they are because if you pull the plug early you
- 22:24can probably back up for another marathon fairly quick.
- 22:26Whereas if you like bury yourself and struggle on for the
- 22:30whole thing like that's you've gone for a while.
- 22:34Oh, especially in the marathon distance, it's just safer to
- 22:37pull the pin if you're not feeling it.
- 22:39Yeah, and I think like outside of a major champion like a
- 22:43Olympics or world, you know, world champs or something, what
- 22:46are you doing it for? I think you're doing it either
- 22:49to post a time or place right at the top end.
- 22:51So and even a lot of the way through and if you're clearly
- 22:54something's not right, like you say, you stand to lose a lot
- 22:57more than what you stand to gain.
- 22:59And maybe it's a pride, but a pride thing if you keep going.
- 23:03I mean, the only risk though is that you really don't want that
- 23:06to become a habit. I think that's the scary thing
- 23:09is like, have you guys ever. I've dropped out of one race.
- 23:12I was 153K race on the track and I still remember it.
- 23:15Like it's not something I would. You don't want to get into the
- 23:18habit of that, I don't think, because, yeah, you worry that
- 23:21that might then become an option for for you when it gets hard
- 23:24and it always gets hard. So yeah, it's tricky.
- 23:27You sort of strategically makes a lot of sense, but then at the
- 23:30same time psychologically is probably a thing then you have
- 23:32to deal with. And you do see it as well, don't
- 23:35you? Like if you look at maybe a
- 23:37couple of people who have DNF, then maybe there's not just one
- 23:41DNF there that they'll have a deal, maybe frequent it, but
- 23:44also then have the sprinkling of a few unbelievable results in
- 23:48there as well. So it's almost like, well, if
- 23:51it's not going to be an amazing day, then I haven't got like the
- 23:53the mental capacity to grind out and I'll just fuck it off.
- 23:57But yeah, I don't think I ever have.
- 24:00Fingers crossed it never happens, but you never know.
- 24:02I haven't either, but I came very, very close when I was
- 24:05doing that 10 mile race and I got a stitch and every step I
- 24:08took was like like a star into my chest or my ribs.
- 24:13But yeah, I feel like if you do drop out, then it becomes an
- 24:15option, whereas if you haven't done it before, like it's just
- 24:17not an option. And normally you can weather
- 24:20those sort of storms like you feel shit.
- 24:22But yeah, I think where I should read somewhere that if you're
- 24:27feeling pain for the first like 30 seconds, it is so, so, so
- 24:31bad. But then your body sort of gets
- 24:33used to it, so you can actually hold it for another little
- 24:35while. Now, obviously marathon, it's a
- 24:37long, long way. So as Calm Levin said, like 100m
- 24:40pain is different to like marathon pain where you have to
- 24:43hold it for maybe an hour. So yeah, I don't know.
- 24:47It's like a mental thing. It can become a mental thing.
- 24:49So just don't give yourself the option of dropping out unless
- 24:54it's like going to do damage to yourself.
- 24:56Feel like with specific reference to the marathon, like
- 24:59you've put that much training in and sacrifice probably so many
- 25:02things from like a social and a family point of view, like you
- 25:05almost will see our to yourself to finish.
- 25:08But yeah, it's like everyone else who you've probably
- 25:10impacted during your training to really get across the finish
- 25:14line as well. Well, yeah, as soon as spin off
- 25:16question I had on that was because obviously there was a
- 25:19couple of marathons last weekend.
- 25:20So you, you hear all the stories from everyone who's run them and
- 25:25it prompted a thought interested to get your opinions because now
- 25:31with like so much emphasis being on fuel and and like almost like
- 25:36the golden phrase of like 100 grams an hour being like the,
- 25:39the gold standard. But again, interesting your
- 25:42thoughts. I don't think that applies to
- 25:44everyone, does it? It's more so like the people at
- 25:47the top end who are running at like a really high intensity.
- 25:51So they're burning energy at a lot higher rates.
- 25:54So if people who are running considerably slower are trying
- 25:58to follow these, like get close to 100 grams an hour, are they
- 26:01then therefore being almost like the architects of their own
- 26:04downfall and causing stomach issues or yeah, just trying
- 26:09things maybe that they didn't do properly in training, As in
- 26:11like, you've never had 100 grams an hour before, so why try and
- 26:15do it on the race day? I know that that's hard to
- 26:17answer because like, well, what are you referring to exactly?
- 26:20But it's just a spiral of thoughts.
- 26:22I think it's probably got some validity to it.
- 26:24Like I don't think even five years ago there was as much
- 26:28emphasis and or awareness on the importance of ingesting a large
- 26:34amount of fuel for getting a good marathon result.
- 26:37So I think everyone's now therefore trying their best to
- 26:40feel more, I would say. So if you are doing that, then
- 26:44you are putting more stress on your stomach and sort of
- 26:48abdominal area. And I know like when I get, I'll
- 26:51try and have like a mixture, like a fluid and carbohydrate
- 26:55mix. And as a result of that, all
- 26:57that fluid sitting in my stomach, like I start to stitch
- 27:01when it starts to get too full. But I know that it's important
- 27:04that I try and get it in. So like, yeah, I think you're
- 27:07right. I think there would be more
- 27:08incidents of that. And it's hard to replicate.
- 27:11Like we do some pretty, we get pretty close to the fire in
- 27:13terms of like some of the sessions we do, which sort of
- 27:16mimic the marathon. And so you do feel that, but you
- 27:19really don't put your body under.
- 27:21You can't, you can't mimic the exact same sort of distress
- 27:23you're putting your body under until a marathon.
- 27:25So it's hard to know until you're actually, you know,
- 27:28whether or not you're doing the right thing trying to put that
- 27:30much in and run hard. And like, not even fueling.
- 27:33I remember I was in the sauna there a couple of months ago and
- 27:36him I got talking to this couple and this is on the Saturday and
- 27:39they're running their first ever marathon on a Sunday.
- 27:42And they're sitting in the sauna and they're saying, yeah,
- 27:45everyone of my first ever marathon tomorrow and after
- 27:48this, we're going to go and get like a big pizza.
- 27:51And I'm like, guys, the sauna, I didn't say this stuff because it
- 27:56probably just derailed them, but I was like, guys, the sauna is
- 27:59not a good thing. Like you're dehydrating your
- 28:01body. Like this is not what you want
- 28:03to be do. Like, sauna is lovely and all,
- 28:05but no, this is not not. Where you want to be?
- 28:08Before your first ever marathon. I didn't think similar thoughts,
- 28:11but then I remember Ryan hopping in and out of the on send the
- 28:15night before our half in Maragami with a Danish in one
- 28:19hand, like a cinnamon scroll in the other hand and him like, hey
- 28:22guys, how you doing? Super casual.
- 28:24We've done like 30 strides afternoon nap been rolling out
- 28:28all morning. I don't know, you know, maybe
- 28:32it, maybe it has to be whatever works for you, you know?
- 28:35Yeah, that was what was required to get me in in both the right
- 28:38mental and physical state for the start line the next morning
- 28:41on send with my Japanese mate and bit of loads of food.
- 28:46Bit of bit of a bit of a boost to the ego, you reckon?
- 28:49Always helps, and if you have to go all the way to Asia to get
- 28:53it, then you got to do what you got to do.
- 28:56I was going to say something else on that, but it's just all
- 28:59right. Then the next race is Amsterdam
- 29:01Marathon tomorrow. Say the next race.
- 29:03There's a multitude of races, but there's a few big names at
- 29:06this one. Joshua Chapter guy, double world
- 29:09record holder in the 5000 and 10,000 meters, is headlined in
- 29:13the men's field. For context, he's around 12:35
- 29:17for 5000 and 2611 for 10,000, which is absolutely absurd.
- 29:23And going back to the Conor Mance record thing, to think
- 29:27anyone was ever in the position where it was assumed that they
- 29:31were going to breeze past his records there is pretty scary to
- 29:35think. So yeah, he's a double Olympic
- 29:39champion from 2021. In Tokyo won the 5000 and in
- 29:43Paris last year he won the 10,000, so I don't know if maybe
- 29:48I've just missed a thing or two and obviously it doesn't.
- 29:51Just because he's ran fast on the track doesn't mean he's
- 29:53guaranteed to become a record breaker at the marathon.
- 29:56But is he flying under the radar a little bit here?
- 30:00He's three time world champion in the 10,000, which when you
- 30:04look at it on paper it's from 2019 in 22 and 2023.
- 30:09But then he didn't do last year because he was at the well,
- 30:13because the Olympics happened, there wasn't one.
- 30:15And then he didn't do this year rather because he's targeting
- 30:18this marathon. So wouldn't be surprised to see
- 30:21him run something fast. He's got APB of 20559 already
- 30:27from Valencia in 2023, Tokyo earlier this year rather so want
- 30:33to watch there. And I think in the reading I was
- 30:35trying to do, Amsterdam is one of the premier European
- 30:39marathons with Berlin and maybe Frankfurt known as obviously
- 30:44Seville, Valencia known as being fast ones over there.
- 30:47Yeah, I think I'm didn't. What's your mind keeps on doing?
- 30:50Amsterdam once pretty. Yeah, as part of like, was it
- 30:53part of like the NN series at one point?
- 30:55Maybe, Yeah. So there's some other names
- 30:58there as well, Gabriel Ghee who's got APB of two O 3, Gente
- 31:03Moller, another 2O3 guy, Gattatu 2O four, and the list goes on.
- 31:08But there's also Great Britain's Phil Sessman is in there.
- 31:11So if anyone's been watching his YouTube like we shared through
- 31:15YouTube Diaries the other week, they'll be well aware that Phil
- 31:18is building a long term towards Valencia in December and he's
- 31:22running Amsterdam on the way up to try and sneak at least a 5
- 31:25second PB to enter the Two O 7 club.
- 31:28Just to mention on Chapter Guy, when he did run those 5 and
- 31:3210,000 meter records, Perths Matt Ranson was the pacemaker in
- 31:35both of those. I think they were like in 2020
- 31:38during COVID but pretty cool. Pretty cool gig to have.
- 31:41I'm sure you've told me that before.
- 31:43There isn't a Mad 1, isn't it? And then like, similar for
- 31:46Stewie being involved in Kip Jogi's bizarre Breaking 2
- 31:50attempts. Like so sick to be involved in
- 31:52things like that. Yeah, I think he was in, I
- 31:55remember like, so we're in lockdown, so there was no races,
- 31:58but he did a few like solo time trial things.
- 32:01Like one of them was around Lake Munga.
- 32:04So Lake Munga's 3 1/2 K's around.
- 32:06And there was a bit of like a informal like lap of the lake
- 32:09challenge and it was like based on a Strava segment and he ran
- 32:12that. I can't remember.
- 32:12It must have been maybe like 240 per K pace around there just on
- 32:17an afternoon. Like there's all like they
- 32:19streamed it, but there was just like people walking their dogs
- 32:21and all that sort of stuff. And he just absolutely ripped it
- 32:24around there and he did. We'd like a 2K time trial under
- 32:285 minutes by 60 seconds a lap for five laps.
- 32:33They is very fit. Then then went over to Europe
- 32:35and and did those pacing gigs. 10K world record of 2611 that's
- 32:40going through AK and 237-A3K in 751.
- 32:46A 5K split of 13 O 6. Like that's it.
- 32:50If he kept that going for the marathon, he'd run a 150. 29
- 32:57guys like that is crazy. Oh my God.
- 33:01And you know, when you look at the all time list as well,
- 33:03obviously he's at the top, but then the guys who are like
- 33:07second, third, fourth, I think the second fastest is like 6
- 33:10seconds behind him. And then the third fastest is
- 33:13like a further 8 seconds back. So like, they're out there on
- 33:16their own almost as well. Yeah.
- 33:18Have you seen? His agent.
- 33:19Was it when world world cross country champs were in Uganda?
- 33:23Have you seen the the footage of him when he's in front and he
- 33:27has like a Cooper tears type finish but further out he yeah
- 33:32the lactate sniper gets him bad. It's worth a watch.
- 33:37Yeah, running at those sorts of paces as well.
- 33:39Once you're flooded with lactate there, there's certainly no
- 33:41coming back, is there? His agent isn't that other prick
- 33:44from Italy. This.
- 33:45He's a guy from that. So for the woman's side of that
- 33:49Amsterdam race, I'm not sure there's any meaningful names in
- 33:53terms of like people who I can relate to, but there's certainly
- 33:56some fast women there. So there's four or five sub 220
- 34:00women and last year it was born in 217 something.
- 34:04So just further backing up that it is a fast course.
- 34:06And again, when I was looking into that, it prompted me to see
- 34:10Paula Radcliffe's 215 time still kind of like on the all time
- 34:15list. So then I was like, well, I know
- 34:17she's the fastest Brit ever still.
- 34:20So went and dug that list out. And even in this day and age,
- 34:25given Paula Radcliffe's time was run in 2003, she's obviously
- 34:29still the the British record holder.
- 34:31No one's got within 6 minutes of it, which is outrageous.
- 34:38Like, how does that make sense? This is the second fastest all
- 34:41times. Carly Thackery from earlier 221,
- 34:44six minutes off. Yeah, I suppose a bit the same
- 34:47if that was an Aussie, right? So yeah.
- 34:49Yeah, so it'd be like someone now breaking through and going
- 34:52and running 215. Incredible.
- 34:54What age is Paula Radcliffe? 48.
- 34:56She's 51 in a diver is literally 49 or 48.
- 35:02She's like 2 years on her. How much Nate divers running the
- 35:0470 minute half marathon. She's yeah.
- 35:07That's so cool. You, you I've just realized
- 35:09though, and you said earlier that you missed the results of
- 35:12Centro and Galen rough and then we just whizzed over it again
- 35:15and didn't didn't mention them. But Centro, who's the former
- 35:19Olympic champ over the 1500 was also run in Chicago, wasn't he?
- 35:23And he ran a small PB of 222, which is is funny because ahead
- 35:28of the race, there's a few media outlets kind of trying to
- 35:31distinguish that, although he ran it.
- 35:33He ran Chicago last year and ran 224.
- 35:36This year was his inverted commas competitive debut.
- 35:39But he again, inverted commas only ran 222.
- 35:43So I heard Ryan Gregson, I think it was saying like a guarantee.
- 35:47Yeah, he wasn't. He wasn't going for that.
- 35:50Like if he really tried someone of his talent and ability, he
- 35:54would have run faster. What I remember hearing him say
- 35:57in the lead up that he had a few goals of like 1 to run APB, 2 to
- 36:01break 2:20 and 3:00 to try and bit break 218.
- 36:05So based on like what he said there, I don't think he would
- 36:09have been jogging that 222. And it looks like he's kind of
- 36:13had a bad day. If you can say as much.
- 36:16It sounds like there's lots of fun going on in Dean's house
- 36:18there. I'll keep jumping on and off
- 36:21mute, sorry. I'm sorry for jumping back and
- 36:24forth between different races and events, but I think we are
- 36:29on to the Dublin Marathon from next week.
- 36:31It would be wrong for me to speak about this when we have
- 36:34our very own Dubliner on the show or.
- 36:37Is that a? That's a probably fighting,
- 36:39Yeah, yeah. I'm a maid man.
- 36:42Is that like saying Ryan's from Liverpool?
- 36:44Yeah. Or maybe Manchester.
- 36:46Yeah, Manchester, Yeah. So before we jump into Dublin
- 36:50marathon, just just literally it's just happened right there,
- 36:53but a man called Fergal Curtain from a place called y'all in
- 36:57County Cork. He has just raced the marathon
- 37:02in South Korea. Now I'm not sure that Martin's
- 37:04name some South Korean name, but yeah, he's after running two O
- 37:10754, which is nearly a 92nd like PB of the Irish marathon record.
- 37:17He previously ran Copenhagen Half Marathon, where he ran
- 37:236022, so we knew he was fit. But yeah, he's after winning
- 37:29that marathon in South Korea and breaking the Irish national
- 37:32record, lowering it by 90 seconds.
- 37:34His splits are crazy. He started off.
- 37:38His first 5K was 14, it was 1548, and he was literally just
- 37:45negative split it to perfection. He finished.
- 37:48His last 5K would have been 1452.
- 37:52But yeah, just crazy. I thought he was actually
- 37:54running Dublin, but apparently not.
- 37:56I think he's doing Singapore next.
- 37:58But yeah, it's just crazy to think like a couple of years ago
- 38:01the Irish marathon was 209. I know like 207 is like pretty.
- 38:06It's legit. And we're getting up there with
- 38:08some of the best in the world. And I think he ran it solo the
- 38:11whole way. Yeah.
- 38:14Verbal Curtain from Ireland. Some of his PBS over 1500.
- 38:17He's run 346. His 3000 meter PB is 750.
- 38:22His five KPB is 133410 KPB of 2825.
- 38:29Yes. Half marathon was one hour and
- 38:3122 seconds, and then it's marathon record before this was
- 38:35211. So yeah, absolutely crazy stuff.
- 38:39Young lad from Cork, 27 years old, but yeah, incredible
- 38:45results and yeah, he wouldn't appointment of course like
- 38:48Valencia and you never know what could happen.
- 38:50But yeah, for curtain, new Irish marathon record.
- 38:53Congrats. No, yeah.
- 38:54Dublin marathon. Well, it is the biggest marathon
- 38:57in Ireland and we always get a few decent Kenyans.
- 39:00I feel like it's like the Kenyans and like jumping block.
- 39:03They run Dublin they win it and like it like it's a well known
- 39:06marathon, not like a the near world major but like it's well
- 39:09known. I think it's good stepping stone
- 39:11then to like jump onto a bigger marathon.
- 39:12Our guest star in a bigger marathon with a nice appearance
- 39:15fee at these first one demands Hillary keep Sambu with a
- 39:20personal best of two O 4 Sweden Samuel TC gay with APB of two O
- 39:266 in Ethiopia's Safa Teferra and brands our way away you are.
- 39:34They're like big names basically.
- 39:35So I think Dublin Martin was one in a two O 6.
- 39:38So to have a 2O four guy there like the weather's cool.
- 39:42The course isn't the flattest, so look.
- 39:45Is that because a lot of it is in that?
- 39:47What's the park called? Phoenix Park.
- 39:49The Phoenix Park, yeah, there's a few big poles and Dublin
- 39:52wouldn't be the fast. Well, it's pretty flat, but it's
- 39:54not the flat city. Irish wise, you've got em.
- 39:56Ryan Creech and who is one of the best marathoners that
- 40:00Ireland have produced, while also you've Paul O'Donnell, who
- 40:03was sort of like Ryan Creatures like he's been there for years,
- 40:09represented Ireland Olympics and Paulo Donnell is sort of like on
- 40:11the rise. So he's APB of 210, which he ran
- 40:14in New York. Well, also Jacob Regan, who I
- 40:17actually would have ran against in the in the 10 mile.
- 40:19I would have run a lot of the race with him.
- 40:21He'll be making his marketing debut and he won the half
- 40:24marathon earlier on the year. So like from an Irish racing
- 40:27point like. It's really it's not on at the
- 40:30best time of year. Like for me, let's say if I
- 40:32wanted to do Dublin, like that's sort of my cross country season
- 40:35gone. So I feel like you sort of have
- 40:37to have to pick and especially like Valencia half marathon is
- 40:40on next weekend, I think, and it sort of takes you out of
- 40:44Valencia. Like if you're doing Dublin,
- 40:47sort of knocks you over like a load of other ones.
- 40:49On the women's side, Basa from I'm not going to try and say her
- 40:52first name Basa from Ethiopia. She's won a she's a three time
- 40:56major marathon winner with a season's best of 228.
- 41:01And fellow Ethiopian Tulu not going to pronounce her first
- 41:03name either with a PB of 224 last year in Seville, while also
- 41:07Kenyans Lillian Chip career Chevy, who's a PB of to 25,
- 41:13which he ran this year. So yeah, umm, again, like them
- 41:18made to 20 for a woman in Dublin would be phenomenal.
- 41:22And on the Irish side, you've got Amir McGlynn, which is just
- 41:24a Stallworth and Irish distant running this.
- 41:26She's seeking her third like tile in a row.
- 41:29So back-to-back to back-to-back to back.
- 41:31She ran to 34 in 2024. Well, they're a little bit off
- 41:36like the top Kenyans, like still very, very, very good time.
- 41:40Additionally, Nicholas Sheridan, who's actually from Mead, she's
- 41:43a local and she's after spending a bit of time in Australia, she
- 41:49her last long run was that she does, she's on Melbourne.
- 41:51Well, she done 20 odd K in Melbourne, so she's flying home
- 41:55to run Dublin and she won the Dublin City Half Marathon
- 41:59earlier on in the year, which was like a big breakout race for
- 42:02her. So it'll be interesting to see
- 42:03how she goes. Well, yeah, prize money for the
- 42:10first. If you come first, you get umm,
- 42:1215 grand back in 7.5 third, five grand, 4th 2.50.
- 42:18This all in Aussie dot uh, S of the American dollar and it pays
- 42:23the whole way down to 8. So if you come eight, you still
- 42:24get £500 and then because it's like our national championships
- 42:28and the top Irish get em get bonuses as they run certain
- 42:33times. So if you run like a sub to 12
- 42:37and you come first, you get like 15, you have 5, an extra $5000
- 42:40for the lads and for the women, if you run like a sub 229 you
- 42:45get 5 grand. So yeah.
- 42:47And if you again that's the time bonuses.
- 42:50And if you win just first Irish home you get an extra €3500, you
- 42:55get second you get €2500 and 3rd you get €1500, which which is
- 43:00pretty shit when you put it in terms of like Australia, What
- 43:03did the first Australian get in Sydney?
- 43:0530 grand Aussie like, but even I think Connor Manz as first
- 43:09American, I think his payday was maybe it was like 15 grand for
- 43:13first American and then 20 or something like that for or maybe
- 43:1930 grand for being 4th overall. Like I think he only walked away
- 43:23with 45,000 US, which you'd think for what he did.
- 43:26Yeah, was, which was pretty remarkable talks to how
- 43:28competitive the the Aussie only prize money was better than
- 43:32Chicago, which is pretty cool. Yeah, but he would have a load
- 43:34of, let's say he would have made loads of money off Nike, like
- 43:37his contract for breaking the American record.
- 43:39He would have got loads of bonuses.
- 43:40Without question, but I think it talks to these races.
- 43:43Yeah. Like Sydney being really good
- 43:45incentive, but in terms of like time incentives, I like, I think
- 43:50that's cool. I think the Gold Coast marathon,
- 43:53which is often the area championships for Aussies, they
- 43:56do the same thing. And it's sort of tears as you
- 43:58run, you know, because what's this?
- 44:00This ranges and Irish athletes get time bonuses for men if they
- 44:03run between anything under 216 and for women anything under
- 44:07233. And then for every minute or
- 44:11half, every half a minute, there's and add a time bonus,
- 44:14which is just, you know, it's just encouraging local athletes
- 44:18to pick for and participate in it, which is, which is a great
- 44:22idea. And that Gold Coast Marathon
- 44:23does the same thing, which I think is cool.
- 44:26There's like 5 people in Ireland that can run under 216 like
- 44:29there's. Not.
- 44:30Is that right? Yeah, there's not a lot.
- 44:32It's. Pretty safe money then.
- 44:34Yeah. It looks GE generous for their
- 44:36geniuses really marketing that Steve Scullion when he did I
- 44:39thought he ran under 210 when he ran well, that's where he ran.
- 44:43Or maybe he. Ran 211.
- 44:44Yeah. Was he third one year when he.
- 44:47Turned that year he came from so far back.
- 44:49Yeah, and he ran over the top of a couple of Kenyans, nearly
- 44:52caught another one, didn't he? Right.
- 44:54Right before the. And what shoes?
- 44:56Was he in Under Armour? He's in Under Armour kit.
- 44:58Was he in Under Armour shoes then?
- 45:00Yeah, he responsibly Under Armour so.
- 45:02Impressive. Yeah, because generally, you
- 45:04know, like all their shoe like other models of shoes from ASIC,
- 45:08the DAS, like UMA, like you're familiar with like that sub tier
- 45:12shoes. Whereas Under Armour you hear
- 45:15absolutely, I think they've a velocity or something like that.
- 45:18Like you hear absolutely nothing.
- 45:19Like you know, Nike, they've the Romero, they're the structure.
- 45:22Adidas have the SL2, the Evo, like you know, all this stuff
- 45:26for other brands, but Under Armour year absolutely nothing.
- 45:29And they have a few pro teams, which is I know they need to
- 45:32better the merchant. Yeah, they need to, Yeah, get
- 45:35out and sell their shoes to the masses if they're.
- 45:38You know, on that prize money conversation you're having, I
- 45:40seen it a post on Instagram comparing breaking the world
- 45:44record in athletics and it was using Mondo Deplantis as the
- 45:48example because probably because he breaks them every week and
- 45:51pays $100,000. Whereas it was comparing to
- 45:55tennis and I think it's Zverev and Setsa Pass.
- 46:00They've just been part of this like exhibition tournament in
- 46:02Saudi Arabia. And I'm well aware you've got to
- 46:05be careful what you wish for because it's kind of like
- 46:08getting Saudis involved to feel like just froze away like the
- 46:11integrity or like the kind of high level competition.
- 46:15But it was saying that they just got paid 1.5 million as it like
- 46:18an appearance fee and neither of them won a set.
- 46:21Whereas Duplantis is breaking the world record and he gets
- 46:24paid $100,000. I don't know either them tennis
- 46:27players either. Do you know?
- 46:30Top five? Probably.
- 46:32Of Ireland, got any decent tennis players anyone's pin your
- 46:35hopes on? But.
- 46:36Ireland doesn't really have the weather for like tennis courts.
- 46:40More squash? No, I maybe.
- 46:42I don't know any tennis players from Ireland.
- 46:45Has any of you tried that sport paddle?
- 46:47It seems to be a bit of a revelation at the minute.
- 46:50Yeah, a mate of mine's built a court actually, so which is
- 46:53pretty cool. In his garden.
- 46:55He's got a built a retreat on his parents house and he's built
- 46:57a paddle court as part of the connected to the retreat.
- 47:00Jesus Christ. I'm going to build a tiring
- 47:03track while there's other. Josh Howie style.
- 47:06Yeah. That's actually parents got a
- 47:08bit of few some free paddocks out the back.
- 47:11So do yours Owen. We both get them done.
- 47:14Yeah, I'll take that alone. Easy double training camps at
- 47:17the the the the two ranches. Only for my when you actually
- 47:20have to slave labor and hunt some cattle and mock out some
- 47:25sheds to use the track. Cross training, yeah.
- 47:28I don't know about this actually, I'm I'm sorry I
- 47:30shocked up in one bed apartment. Dean's got a sauna in his garden
- 47:34when he's got like a separate house in his garden with his own
- 47:37bloody treadmill and running gym.
- 47:40Well, the treadmill is gone. Treadmill got returned.
- 47:42Oh. Yeah.
- 47:43What's the line? Yeah, cash.
- 47:44Back. I'm waiting for my cash back,
- 47:46hopefully I get it back. Apparently it's been sent.
- 47:49But yeah, my treadmill dream is has gone out the window,
- 47:51unfortunately. This year anyway.
- 47:53You might look for another. I don't like, I don't know.
- 47:56We'll see what happens. You just rock the hive is
- 47:58instead, you reckon? I bought a hive is from Amazon
- 48:01there and I've got me headlight. So it's just when the roads get
- 48:04icy here, that's when you've got the like you cooked slip or
- 48:08something, something like that, so.
- 48:09Yeah, get back on the treadmill. What about like a secondhand or
- 48:12refurb? There's no options for that.
- 48:14Well, that's that what this one was secondhand and I got like a
- 48:17feeling I got lucky if I get my money back because imagine
- 48:20spending like a lot a couple of grand on a treadmill and then
- 48:25only Friday three months, 6 month warranty on this one, like
- 48:27I'd be stuck with a broken treadmill.
- 48:28So yeah, I don't know like and my car is old so I have to watch
- 48:33that. I think I need a car before a
- 48:34treadmill nearly at this stage, so we'll see.
- 48:37Get a bike. Ryan's got 2 now.
- 48:39Yeah, no, no one's came in with any bids for the gravel bike
- 48:42yet. It's a bit niche, although you
- 48:43should have said you know who you are as part of it and sign
- 48:47it. I think that might devalue it
- 48:51after my cycling stories. After your 32nd at the Whatever
- 48:56race, that was what was. The bike, it's a ballad.
- 48:58You gravel, right? It's it's prestigious.
- 49:01They are actually both in our building and work.
- 49:04They provide free bike service so you can you can book in with
- 49:08them. Usually $99.00.
- 49:10The building will do it for free, which is ideal.
- 49:12Have you got to make the most of that then?
- 49:14Yeah, they're both booked in for the next round of services.
- 49:18Right, Owen? Shall you give us your training
- 49:21week or like you build up to a race you plan for tomorrow, you
- 49:25choose how much you want to? Yeah, well, I don't think any of
- 49:28the boys listen to this podcast, so we're safe enough.
- 49:30They won't know my tactics and I won't be near the front either.
- 49:33So. Right.
- 49:36So Monday was off the long run. And what did I do on Monday?
- 49:44Monday's not just. So I don't really do two runs a
- 49:47day now. Taper, try and freshen up.
- 49:50So no easy double S unfortunately.
- 49:54But yeah, I done 45 minutes and then I done 10 by 50m.
- 49:59Like we call them turnabouts. So normally if I do strides, I
- 50:03like let's say I stride for like 10 seconds and then I jog back.
- 50:07Whereas these 50m turnabouts I like like go 50 meters.
- 50:12I like I jog a little bit past turn and then go again.
- 50:15So the recovery is less. I'm not sure what the purpose of
- 50:18them is, but yeah get the legs moving after 45 minutes.
- 50:22Tuesday was like my last session.
- 50:24Oh 15 minute warm up and cool down and then I done so 1 by 20
- 50:29minutes at like threshold, the higher end of threshold and then
- 50:33I just don't 1K. So I had 6 minutes break and now
- 50:36I just don't 1K. The 20 minute threshold was like
- 50:39around three O 9 feeling pretty good Yeah, it was pretty flat.
- 50:44Normally I did my thresholds on the Grolin Hills.
- 50:46So on the flat I sort of got moving and yeah, feeling good.
- 50:50Did you, did you go a bit to a bit of a higher heart rate now
- 50:53off the back of the testing? Yeah, so I'm allowed to go up to
- 50:581 like this one's between like 176 and 182.
- 51:01So just sit between there and like a melt hold out for like a
- 51:07decent period of time and it. Feels all right.
- 51:09Doesn't feel like you're like flat to the boards over, over,
- 51:13you know, like, doesn't feel like a race effort.
- 51:15Still feels, you know, all right.
- 51:16At the start, at the start it did like now I feel like like
- 51:19it's like it's not comfy, but it's not comfy hard.
- 51:23Like I feel like I could sit on it for a while.
- 51:25Yeah, cool. So which is?
- 51:26Which is positive? And then with UK, what's the
- 51:29instruction there? Is it to bury yourself or is it
- 51:33have you got a target pace for that?
- 51:34Not really well in the program was to 5K.
- 51:37I went a little bit faster than 5K pace but like I felt good.
- 51:40So I ran the KNM 2:45. On this as well or you gravel
- 51:45track? Not me gravel track.
- 51:47Oh the K felt good, but now it is only one K.
- 51:51Would it be able to hold that for another 4?
- 51:53Absolutely not. But yeah legs are coming around
- 51:57so happy with that one. Then Tuesday normally do a bike
- 52:02but because the running volume is like loaded I just don't umm
- 52:0550 minute easy. And then that evening I just
- 52:07don't know a circus class, not like circuit classes like pretty
- 52:11low weight as it is and I just don't last ways just try and
- 52:15ease off. Thursday I don't for 5 minutes
- 52:18and then 8 by 8 seconds strides and then in the evening I'd on
- 52:23gym and this was like have your reps but I have your weight but
- 52:26low reps So it was like 3 reps and like a squat or something
- 52:29like that. So literally totally deloading.
- 52:32Friday I just don't 30 minutes shake out the legs today.
- 52:36Now later on I'll do eh, I sort of try and like run now at the
- 52:42time I'll be running the race. It's just a little thing I do
- 52:45like on the lead up to race. So normally because I do all my
- 52:48run super early or super late, like my race is on like 2:20 to
- 52:52on Sunday. So umm, like I'll try and get
- 52:55out today at round. Like my sister is playing a
- 52:57football game at 2:00. So I can't get out at the exact
- 52:59time, but I'll try and get out like half 1011 just to sort of
- 53:03like mimic what I'll be doing. So it's just 30 minutes and I've
- 53:073 by 200 meters. I'll probably like 5K pace, like
- 53:10the races I should not even short the disc.
- 53:13I think it's 7 1/2 or 8K. And Oh yeah, a little bit like
- 53:17around 5K pace for these two again just to get the legs
- 53:20moving. And then tomorrow I'll get up
- 53:22early, I'll do a 30 minute shakeout, just shake out the
- 53:25legs. And yeah, it's called the
- 53:28autumn. Opened my tank.
- 53:29There is a good few lads faster than me so I forget like top
- 53:342015. I'd be happy.
- 53:36It's just really to see like where how close I am to like the
- 53:40big boys because a lot of them were away on a training camp in
- 53:43front or MO so Atlantic Ireland paid for that.
- 53:45So just to see where I am with them because like I still down a
- 53:48four weeks to the big like the big dance, let's say nationals.
- 53:51So it's just basically like a warm up race to see how I'm
- 53:54going. Just in terms of like context,
- 53:56like is it like cross country season?
- 53:58Like do you represent a club? And then it did.
- 54:00Does it count towards like a perpetual, like a shield or
- 54:03anything like that? Like and disease race.
- 54:06Is that part of anything? So it is cross country season,
- 54:09but like it's not like athletics Victoria where there's actually
- 54:13like a series, there's none. Like there's literally and
- 54:15Ireland it's really weird. So you've got like there's
- 54:19different age grades. So once you're a senior athlete,
- 54:21you've got there's a novice. So let's say there is where I'm
- 54:24from, there's me, it's my county.
- 54:26So you've got me novice one Week, 2 weeks later there could
- 54:30be me it or intermediate. And like in December they're
- 54:34senior. So you've got three different
- 54:36age groups that I could run in as like an older athlete if you
- 54:40get me as. So if you're a younger kid,
- 54:42there would be like uneven ages, uneven ages under 12141618 or
- 54:48under 11131517 just to give everyone a best chance.
- 54:53But because before I came to Australia, I came like it's
- 54:57basically a way of getting people running because like the
- 55:00novice and intermediate wouldn't be near as competitive as the
- 55:02senior. So because I came third in a
- 55:05national novice or something like that, that ruled me out of
- 55:08all novice, ruled me out of all intermediate.
- 55:12So now I only have senior. So basically I have two races,
- 55:14well three races I've got this autumn Open, I've got nationals
- 55:18in November and then in December I've got Meads, which is like
- 55:23normally as the underage athlete you have to like come top five
- 55:26or 12 in Mead to then jump on to Leinster, then jump on to
- 55:30Ireland. Those like qualifying stages,
- 55:32whereas senior sort of goes out the window and so it jumps from
- 55:34senior and then in December I'll have the Mead cross country.
- 55:38That's cool. That makes a lot of sense.
- 55:39And then in terms of the actual national cross, will that be a
- 55:43selection race for European cross?
- 55:44Is that why a lot of people would be doing it?
- 55:46Yeah, so top five get picked to represent Ireland in the
- 55:51European cross country, which is so national cross for me is on
- 55:55the 23rd of November and then European cross country is on the
- 55:5814th of December and that is in Portugal this year.
- 56:03So yeah, it's a good chance to represent Ireland.
- 56:05Basically all of the all of the good lads show up.
- 56:10Umm, no, it's exciting. I love cross country because
- 56:12sort of like a leveler as in sort of like the heat, like it
- 56:17neutralizes the playing field. So you could be really, really
- 56:20light and fast. Whereas if you're cross country,
- 56:21certainly that strength aspect, when it's sort of levels the
- 56:24playing fields, it'll be interesting to see how you get
- 56:26on. You've got that dog in you as
- 56:28well. Well, I don't know about that,
- 56:29but we'll say you will say. The setup of cross country in
- 56:34the UK is similar as well. So you would run for your club
- 56:37both as an individual, but your your club is also competing in a
- 56:41team leaderboard. So like the top 4 or whatever
- 56:45for your club points are combined and it starts in
- 56:48similarly in the county championships, which would be
- 56:51like, I don't know, maybe Perth, like north of the river, South
- 56:56of the river, that sort of size. And then I think it goes into
- 56:59like Northerns, Midlands and southern.
- 57:02And then if your team club qualifies in like the top
- 57:06however many, then you qualify for nationals.
- 57:09So like some clubs will obviously they're good year on
- 57:12year and they're not really bothered about counties or the
- 57:15Northerns or Southerns because they know they're going to be at
- 57:18nationals and it's all about competing at nationals.
- 57:20Whereas for others who are lower down, it's like a big deal to
- 57:24qualify for northerns or to then qualify for nationals.
- 57:27So I know the the captain of my club back home, he's trying to
- 57:30drive the cross country methodology and some of the guys
- 57:35are a little bit reluctant to get on board because of the, the
- 57:38cold weather and the dark boggy fields.
- 57:41He's yeah. So like every now and then he'll
- 57:43he'll send me like a question through or for like some of the
- 57:46pros who you know, like a lot of them take cross country
- 57:49seriously, like it forms a legit part of their season and they're
- 57:52planning, doesn't it serves a purpose.
- 57:55So the this guy Rob, he'll send through like our ask so and so
- 57:59about cross country or like try and get us to share our opinion
- 58:03on it because he's trying to get some buy in from the other lads
- 58:06at the club. Like me trying to get Andrew
- 58:08Coskren to run. So me you'd have a good team
- 58:10basically. But is this the rate which is,
- 58:13which was the race you were going to try and win, which was
- 58:16like his local race that's already been and gone, you won
- 58:19that. Yeah, Yeah, I won that, yeah.
- 58:21Is he aware, do you think? I don't think so.
- 58:24I don't know. For him, yeah.
- 58:26That's just like a way like lower level me, like this one
- 58:29here. I think it's on the, it's I
- 58:31guess a World Athletic Series race.
- 58:33You can get points this from this race because I know a few,
- 58:37the other lads are doing a race in Spain.
- 58:39It's like a gold label me but I don't know what label this one
- 58:42is, but it has a label so you can get points from us.
- 58:45So yeah. Do you mean to help them with
- 58:47their world ranking for the track?
- 58:50Yeah, I think so, yeah. I remember might have been the
- 58:53Coffee Club guys talking about it a little while ago.
- 58:56But sometimes because you can't compare the times like you can
- 59:00in a road or a track race, the points are just allocated based
- 59:04on I think place. And there's quite a generous
- 59:07amount of points. So some of these like that was
- 59:09the way of getting into the quota was by doing some of these
- 59:12cross country races because they're sort of very generous in
- 59:15their point allocation, which is sort of a bit, yeah, not ideal
- 59:19in some ways. But then in other ways, like the
- 59:21whole point of this world athletic system is to get people
- 59:23to compete in their local championships and to then if
- 59:27they do well in them and everyone races each other,
- 59:29they're the ones who get to represent the country.
- 59:31So yeah, not against it. I think it's good.
- 59:33There's actually an Aussie in the race tomorrow and his name
- 59:37is Thomas Alphabin and he actually ran in Perth.
- 59:43So he ran fourteen O 8 at the National 5K in Perth.
- 59:48Get out. So we were trackside watching
- 59:50him and now he's racing it's. Like don't know what he's doing
- 59:54over here, but yeah, he's come over to Ireland to be real cross
- 59:59country. Get my sister has to go up to
- 1:00:01black to Dublin later to get me some like spikes.
- 1:00:04So the spikes to go into your spikes them like obviously the
- 1:00:07track ones are like 3 mil, whereas now I need like 15 mil
- 1:00:11and 12 mil. So like big like daggers
- 1:00:13basically coming out of your ear spikes.
- 1:00:17I don't think do they even sell 15 mil and 12 mil in Australia
- 1:00:21for your golf courses. You do for for for AFL, maybe
- 1:00:26Alpha to date that it probably is D Thatcher's for Lawn but not
- 1:00:32for actual cross country, yeah. So yeah, that's my week.
- 1:00:36How are you guys? Well, good, good luck for that
- 1:00:38as well before we move on. And if anyone wants to follow
- 1:00:41Owen's race results, then TuneIn to Strava, because otherwise
- 1:00:44we'll have to be waiting 8 days or so to find out the results of
- 1:00:48his race. Yeah, even though I don't think
- 1:00:50I'll wear a watch, I might just put up the result because across
- 1:00:52country, like it's totally irrelevant wearing a watch.
- 1:00:55Yeah, so I'll probably ditch to watch it.
- 1:00:57I will post something on survival but yeah just me and
- 1:01:00the effort basically. Well, yeah, Dean, tell us about
- 1:01:03your recovery journey because you obviously missed kind of
- 1:01:06like the train and chat last week and I know you've been
- 1:01:09doing a bit of experimentation. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:12And it's not too experimental, sort of following some sort of
- 1:01:16guided program. But yeah, so I was in Melbourne
- 1:01:19at the start of the week, so Monday, Tuesday was just
- 1:01:24ellipticals and gyms. So just at the local hotel gym.
- 1:01:28I managed to sneak back in there even on the Tuesday.
- 1:01:30I flew home Tuesday night, but got back in there Tuesday
- 1:01:33afternoon for a bit more elliptical running, but nothing
- 1:01:36too exciting other than just doing my regular gym exercises
- 1:01:40and and all that sort of stuff on the Monday, Tuesday.
- 1:01:43But yeah, Wednesday I was on the altar G and yes, I wouldn't have
- 1:01:47spoken about this last week I don't think.
- 1:01:49But yeah, thanks again to people that commented, particularly a
- 1:01:53couple of Perth locals. Is that another comment?
- 1:01:56I know Brian, we mentioned it perhaps on the pod and Suzanne
- 1:02:00also messaged me just to give me some context.
- 1:02:04So, yeah, so where we've been swimming on Wednesday, I'm back
- 1:02:08in Perth Rd. from the office to Beatty Park Leisure Centre,
- 1:02:13where there's a pool where we're normally the water running or
- 1:02:16swimming laps hop on the altar G, which is this anti gravity
- 1:02:20treadmill. So the idea is that it's a it
- 1:02:23looks like a regular treadmill, but around it, you sort of step
- 1:02:26into it and you, you put on a pair of half tights that have
- 1:02:29like a bit of a loop around it and you zip yourself into sort
- 1:02:34of the bottom half. So from the waist down, you sort
- 1:02:36of it's like it's like a bouncing castle type material
- 1:02:40that's basically encapsulated from where the the arm bars are
- 1:02:44on the treadmill and down is like a big bubble.
- 1:02:47And you can and you, you press a button to calibrate it and the,
- 1:02:50the treadmill then just blows a heap of air into like into the
- 1:02:53into the leg part of the treadmill to basically work out
- 1:02:57how hard does that air need to blow in order to lift you off
- 1:03:01the ground. So it's quite a funny sensation,
- 1:03:03but once you've done that, it then knows what, how, what
- 1:03:06intensity it needs to essentially blow air to sort of
- 1:03:09deload your legs. So the protocol I was given for
- 1:03:12as a return to run of sorts was that I could do 30 minutes on
- 1:03:16the altar G 1st 10 minutes at 15% at 50% body weight, then 60%
- 1:03:22body weight, then 70% body weight.
- 1:03:26And I think I said it at 14 KS an hour.
- 1:03:29I would have said it, I started slower, but it's actually feels
- 1:03:32I, I had my heart rate monitor on.
- 1:03:33It just felt too easy. I don't know if it was the right
- 1:03:38thing to do. I probably, I haven't caught up
- 1:03:40with Steve yet, but yeah, said it at that.
- 1:03:41And yeah, didn't have any pain and actually really enjoyed what
- 1:03:45felt like going for a run. And it was made more
- 1:03:48entertaining because I think it's double sided glass, but you
- 1:03:50can see out into the pool and in the pool was Ryan doing his
- 1:03:54doing his laps. So, so, yeah, so that was, that
- 1:03:59was certainly made the time go, go quicker.
- 1:04:01That's for sure. Saying Ryan front crawling up
- 1:04:03and down there, up and down the pool.
- 1:04:07But yeah, it's good. I've yeah.
- 1:04:09So I've done that twice this week, once last week and I've
- 1:04:12sort of got the clearance to do that every second day.
- 1:04:14I think I did 40 minutes on Fri. Yeah.
- 1:04:17So last night I did 40 minutes of that.
- 1:04:19So the last 20 minutes at 70%, no pain at the minute.
- 1:04:24So I'm hoping that I can keep sort of progressing it.
- 1:04:26You do notice the feeling. So from 50% feels like not a
- 1:04:29lot, but then by the time you're putting 70% load through, it
- 1:04:32actually feels fairly similar to running, albeit perhaps how I
- 1:04:36once felt when I was fit and gravity didn't hit so hard.
- 1:04:40A. Couple of things here.
- 1:04:41I did have a laugh when I got back to my phone on that
- 1:04:44Wednesday. And you'd been speculating as to
- 1:04:47whether I'd make it into the other pool to do my water
- 1:04:49running and also whether I'd wandered off into the sauna
- 1:04:52instead. And secondly, was super context
- 1:04:56for those who've listened to the Cooper tier interview.
- 1:04:59This is the machine that Cooper was talking about.
- 1:05:02He and Cole used to kind of train over speed.
- 1:05:05So they'll run at a reduced percentage of body weight so
- 1:05:09that they can run like race pace plus basically like faster than
- 1:05:13they would just running outside. But the more traditional use of
- 1:05:18this machine might be what Deans using it for, which is to like
- 1:05:21gradually reload your your muscles and your bones.
- 1:05:24So it's interesting and I'm enjoying listening to kind of
- 1:05:27like how you're getting along with it because hopefully it's
- 1:05:30something I can maybe progress too soon as well.
- 1:05:33Yeah. And in terms of this particular
- 1:05:35one, like I think it's connected to a physio center.
- 1:05:37So you have to book it for a physio appointment on the 1st
- 1:05:40instance to basically get. They basically just show you how
- 1:05:43to use it. And then at this place they
- 1:05:45leave you be and they sort of have a, whilst the physio
- 1:05:48practice is open, you can basically book in at any time.
- 1:05:51They seem pretty relaxed around slot times as well.
- 1:05:54So yeah, I've got gone in, had no trouble sort of using it.
- 1:05:58And I think it's healthcare rebatable.
- 1:06:00So I think I'm literally out of pocket $5 a session.
- 1:06:02So as potentially an option for something to use, particularly
- 1:06:06let's say the track on a Tuesday is where I would do some higher
- 1:06:09intensity stuff. But maybe this is something
- 1:06:11where I can do something a bit quicker without the risk,
- 1:06:13similar to sort of what you were saying Ryan is.
- 1:06:16Yeah, should be, should be fun. I see.
- 1:06:17Certainly you can feel it load up certain areas like through
- 1:06:20your hips and hip flexors, you know, because you're moving
- 1:06:23reasonably quickly or quicker than what I have in a while.
- 1:06:25But it'll be interesting to see as you sort of dial it up, how
- 1:06:28things load and does it. I I suspect given you can sort
- 1:06:32of toggle with the percentage of body weight, you can probably
- 1:06:34get up to a really good speed and not have the same degree of
- 1:06:38impact, which should make for a should be fun I think.
- 1:06:42You know good. So have you I guess even
- 1:06:45considered how many KS you've run this week because of all
- 1:06:48that? Oh gosh, I don't know.
- 1:06:51Yeah. So in terms of yeah, well, I
- 1:06:52guess I did that, yeah, twice this week.
- 1:06:55They'll probably like 9 KS a session, I think on the Alta G
- 1:06:59and then and then, yeah, 2 ellipticals.
- 1:07:01And then I think I've done a bit over 100 KS on the bike, I think
- 1:07:04something like that. Few gym sessions.
- 1:07:06So it's been my week and then I'll get out for something again
- 1:07:09tomorrow. So still a reasonable amount of
- 1:07:11cross training, but I think what I am lacking is sort of of
- 1:07:14intervals. So I'd like to progress to some
- 1:07:16sort of more intensity I think is what I need now, unless,
- 1:07:21yeah, unless there's a very likely return to run.
- 1:07:24But I need to catch up with Steve I guess.
- 1:07:26In terms of medium term, I've got an MRI booked in for the
- 1:07:2825th of October and a appointment with the sports doc
- 1:07:317th of November. And I think the council I did
- 1:07:33get is let's sort of get these Altar G sessions progressing as
- 1:07:38I am to the point where I can do like continuous running it, I
- 1:07:43don't know, 70% for 40 minutes or 50 minutes or something like
- 1:07:48that. Then that might set me up well
- 1:07:49for when I do start running. Just yeah, my actual return to
- 1:07:55my actual running it's. Crazy, isn't it, How fast time
- 1:07:57passes once you actually do like step back and stop running?
- 1:08:01And then then you've got into like the swing of continuing to
- 1:08:04train but not running? And how long has it been now?
- 1:08:07Like a month or something more. Be six weeks, I think something
- 1:08:11like that. Yes.
- 1:08:12Seven weeks, maybe. Smart, but yeah, on the right
- 1:08:15track anyway. Hopefully same with me.
- 1:08:17I've got a catch up with Steve next week.
- 1:08:20So I'm hopeful that I can add no to what extent progress the the
- 1:08:24rehab and what will change. But definitely I'm not going in
- 1:08:28there with like an active mindset to be like it wasn't
- 1:08:32responding well to this or whatever.
- 1:08:33I'm kind of they're going to see what we can progress to.
- 1:08:37So yeah, that's all. Are you still feeling it at all?
- 1:08:40I'm aware of it, yeah, but I think I'm going to continue to
- 1:08:43be aware of it and I need to. I was explaining to Owen last
- 1:08:47week almost like sleepwalk through this return to run
- 1:08:52program to the point where like it's always an awareness.
- 1:08:56But then in like another six weeks time I might be doing a 45
- 1:09:00minute jog and it feels awareness.
- 1:09:03Whereas now it's like or you walk 10,000 steps in a day and
- 1:09:07you're aware of it. But yeah, I think we just need
- 1:09:10to try and progress it. You know what your man Jug on
- 1:09:13Cargo or Craig. Oh, he has it's some tendonopia
- 1:09:17tendonopathy as well, doesn't he?
- 1:09:19I think I've seen something on his socials and he was talking
- 1:09:22about like you still have to load it.
- 1:09:23Like you sort out like it's going to get angry, but you have
- 1:09:26to load it to get it better. But it's just loading it safely
- 1:09:30in a way it doesn't get too angry and too inflamed.
- 1:09:33But yeah, he's putting like heel pitches in his shoes now to like
- 1:09:37because the more drop a shoe has.
- 1:09:39So let's say some shoes have 5 mil drops, 8 mil drops, 10 mil
- 1:09:43drops. The more drop, the shorter your
- 1:09:46Achilles. Like it shortens your Achilles
- 1:09:48so it puts less tension on it. Whereas if it's like only A5 mil
- 1:09:52drop, it's going to elongate your Achilles, which is going to
- 1:09:56put more pressure on it. So maybe you could get like
- 1:09:59something for your for your shoes as well to just like
- 1:10:02actually put some load true or I don't know.
- 1:10:04Yeah, I have got those little inserts and I think you are
- 1:10:07right. It's basically a question of
- 1:10:09loading it to the point where it becomes uncomfortable then take
- 1:10:13a step back and keep like almost like climbing ladders like that.
- 1:10:16So, yeah, otherwise like done plenty of cycling and 300 KS or
- 1:10:20something and my, I was telling Dean my chorus man, you know
- 1:10:26what we've referred to in the past, like his fatigue levels
- 1:10:29and stuff. We looked earlier and he was on
- 1:10:3162% and said fatigue. So been putting a bit of work
- 1:10:34into him, which is good. And it also tracks your so
- 1:10:38through like obviously where in the heart rate monitor, it
- 1:10:41measures how long you spend in certain heart rate zones and
- 1:10:45gives you like a train and load score as a result of that.
- 1:10:47And it plots that for out time on a graph.
- 1:10:50So you can see in inverted commas your fitness on this
- 1:10:54chart. And for a while it was quite
- 1:10:56depressing because it was just gradually going down and down
- 1:10:59and down as my load was going down.
- 1:11:01But the past, I don't know, six weeks or something, it's
- 1:11:04actually on a progressive incline.
- 1:11:06So it's kind of reassuring that although I'm not doing any
- 1:11:09running, I am getting fitter again.
- 1:11:12So yeah, that's one thing. It's tough, yes, but it just
- 1:11:15makes you more hungry and more grateful when you do come back
- 1:11:18and don't take anything for granted and hopefully keep up
- 1:11:21these maintenance gym routines. And yeah, you just got to take
- 1:11:25the lens from it because like we've seen many times before,
- 1:11:28like the professional athletes get injured and they come back
- 1:11:31stronger and comes back quicker than you'll know.
- 1:11:34So I just can't wait to stop talking about it, that's all.
- 1:11:37And actually talk about some run A. 100% you do take for granted
- 1:11:40like being able to go out and run and then when you're injured
- 1:11:43and you're like shit, like I miss this so, so much.
- 1:11:48And so no, I feel for you guys. I'm just, I'm glad selfishly
- 1:11:52that I'm not living in England, particularly during this period
- 1:11:56because I know like through the lifestyle there, I just wouldn't
- 1:11:59be going out cycling and swimming.
- 1:12:02I'd just be getting fast and probably drinking every weekend,
- 1:12:05so it's keeping me sane over here.
- 1:12:08It's so hard over here with the daylight.
- 1:12:11It makes such a such a difference.
- 1:12:13Like you have to put in a lot of effort to actually get out.
- 1:12:15And because everyone works 9:00 to 5:00 and now soon you're
- 1:12:20going to get up and it's going to be pitch black and you're
- 1:12:22going to go home and it's going to be pitch black.
- 1:12:24Which is when the treadmill would have been very handy for
- 1:12:25me. But yeah, it's going to get cold
- 1:12:29and shit. And it's just, yeah, no.
- 1:12:32Well, you've been true this shit Christmas or shit winter.
- 1:12:35So now it's our turn. You have so much respect for
- 1:12:38those UK island based people who like train through winter and
- 1:12:42then go and race in like early spring or whatever because you
- 1:12:46just know that they've put the work in and the horrible hours
- 1:12:49and like that's the motivation that they need to get the
- 1:12:52results, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:12:53Absolutely. Like those dark, cold mornings,
- 1:12:55like now they're coming up. It's yeah.
- 1:12:57It's just you really need to be a driven person to get up and
- 1:13:00get out and do it. We love the sport.
- 1:13:02We did comment on that, didn't we Ryan, Just about we probably
- 1:13:06a bit lucky in terms of timing of injury, like being in sort of
- 1:13:10springtime and it's, you know, the days are getting longer like
- 1:13:13in terms of cycling weather, it's like really quite pleasant
- 1:13:16and then even getting in the pool it's fairly pleasant.
- 1:13:19And so whilst it's been a annoying not to be, I'd still
- 1:13:21take running obviously, but like it has been a lot of fun.
- 1:13:24Like I've, I got my bike, old bike service.
- 1:13:27I was back on my actual bike this week, which was a lot of
- 1:13:30fun. And then like getting in the
- 1:13:31pools been interesting focusing on gym because you really don't
- 1:13:34focus on gym in the same way when you're running because
- 1:13:37you're just conscious, so conscious of how it's going to
- 1:13:39impact your training sessions. Like having the opportunity to
- 1:13:42lean into all these things has been has been good.
- 1:13:47I think even like the swim allows you to get some strength
- 1:13:49through your upper body which like even if you were doing gym
- 1:13:53whilst you are running you're probably just focusing on your
- 1:13:55legs and your core and not really doing any like chest,
- 1:13:57arm, shoulders and swim just adds another dimension doesn't
- 1:14:01it? Not that having strong bloody
- 1:14:03shoulders is going to help you run faster, but it all helps
- 1:14:06somewhere. Becky and Hal's appreciate it
- 1:14:08for sure. Rafted them say to me the other
- 1:14:11day. I don't actually know what he
- 1:14:12meant by it completely, but I did have my singular cycling
- 1:14:16jersey on at the time and he was like, well, you're starting to
- 1:14:19look like a triathlete now, Mace And I thought I told back in she
- 1:14:23said, are you your ego loves being around RAF because he
- 1:14:27boosts. Sure.
- 1:14:29I think we're getting to the end now.
- 1:14:30So we've got a double troubles to take us home.
- 1:14:33Jack Poland sent me a text earlier in the week.
- 1:14:35He must have been scrolling Strawber.
- 1:14:38It must have got a bit fed though.
- 1:14:40I should mention, sorry, one thing I didn't, I forgot to
- 1:14:42mention when I was in Melbourne, I caught up with Ben.
- 1:14:46Yeah, just a quick mention. So Ben was one of our coaches at
- 1:14:51Front Runner, so coaches for quite a few sessions when we're
- 1:14:54all running together and he's moved to on to coach under Craig
- 1:14:58Mottram on Oceania. So I caught up for him with him
- 1:15:02for a quick beer, but yeah, he seems to be settling in very
- 1:15:06well. Gave some really cool stories.
- 1:15:08Basically has gone from coaching all of us and people from all
- 1:15:13walks of life and all abilities to basically has a stable of
- 1:15:18there's like 10 on Oceania athletes that he looks after.
- 1:15:21And so he spent six weeks in Europe at Saint Moritz in the
- 1:15:24lead up to Tokyo, working very closely with the athletes.
- 1:15:28And then he just got gotten back from America.
- 1:15:31Can't remember where he was there, but they had like a
- 1:15:34summit, you know, like an on summit where they all come in
- 1:15:37from all the different on groups.
- 1:15:39So yeah, got to hang out with the like the athletes.
- 1:15:42Like is it like Jared the Goose and and spent time with Dathan
- 1:15:46and yeah, so he just said it was, I mean, he's been yes, he's
- 1:15:50yeah. Real eye opening.
- 1:15:51Really loving the experience. She had some interesting
- 1:15:54observations around, you know, coaching professionals versus
- 1:15:56coaching amateur athletes. And I think it's just having a
- 1:15:59really cool time of it. So yeah, it was a cool, it was a
- 1:16:03cool. I I had a quick tour through
- 1:16:05like the gym facilities just outside of they have just
- 1:16:08outside of Melbourne and he sort of went through one of the
- 1:16:10programs he'd just taken the guys on.
- 1:16:13It was a Monday afternoon. So they do like, you know,
- 1:16:15muscular work on a Monday, so a series of like, activations and,
- 1:16:19you know, strides and other sort of plyometrics and all these
- 1:16:22drills and bits and pieces that they focus on on a Monday.
- 1:16:24But yeah, really cool. Cool to cool to catch up with
- 1:16:26him and cool to see him. Yeah.
- 1:16:28Really enjoying his new job. Yeah.
- 1:16:30But on what an opportunity that is for him over there and
- 1:16:33thoroughly deserved as well. Like on reflection, when he
- 1:16:36would take those track sessions, his his demeanor just put you at
- 1:16:40ease, doesn't it? The way he like delivers the
- 1:16:42session with the whiteboard and like you pay 100% attention to
- 1:16:46him when he speaks. Like he just that kind of has
- 1:16:48that presence and authority that goes with it without being like
- 1:16:53overbearing and authoritative that way.
- 1:16:55Yeah. And I think one of his
- 1:16:56observations was in terms of his support is, yeah, just being
- 1:16:59very present, being very available.
- 1:17:02And you can be when you're sort of your full time job is making
- 1:17:05sure that 10 people are very well looked after.
- 1:17:08And I think you just lean into the athletes and they lean on
- 1:17:10you because they're, you can only imagine what it must be
- 1:17:13like when it's your sole source of income and is is coming from
- 1:17:17your running performances. So yeah, pretty cool.
- 1:17:20I wonder if now the the on athletes are subject to the keep
- 1:17:23the train moving boys as they're taking off 400m laps.
- 1:17:28There'd be a few things I suspect you'd be sprinkling in
- 1:17:31over time for sure. That's class.
- 1:17:33Nice that you got to catch up with them as well.
- 1:17:36So yet the double trouble to take us home is Jack Poland High
- 1:17:40Rock special, he says. And then the direct quotas.
- 1:17:45Nobody is reading your full session written on a chalkboard
- 1:17:48when you put it on your straw. Absolutely no one.
- 1:17:51So I think for context, many people may directly understand
- 1:17:55what he's referring to, but for those who don't, maybe people
- 1:17:59who upload an afternoon warehouse or a morning warehouse
- 1:18:02and it's been recorded as like a gym activity or a cardio
- 1:18:06workout. They're then often attached with
- 1:18:09it is a photo of the board in the gym with like 10 by front
- 1:18:13lunge, 32nd elliptical into 62nd row into 12 calories, ski egg
- 1:18:21into walking lunges times 5. And Jack's obviously just
- 1:18:25scrolling through Strava and one too many people have been
- 1:18:28uploading a High Rock style workout for his liking.
- 1:18:32So there you go. I'm not, I'm not against.
- 1:18:34It I laughed out loud when I read it to myself.
- 1:18:37It was like so relatable because you actually don't read.
- 1:18:40Well, I don't read what they write either.
- 1:18:42But no, that's a good on. That's a good.
- 1:18:45On I agree, great shout. But Ryan, do you have a bit more
- 1:18:48of an open mind? Like I'm literally now writing
- 1:18:50on my Strava, my altar Jeep and bits and pieces like that.
- 1:18:53So it's like, I don't know. I'm like, I don't even want to.
- 1:18:57I don't want to mention what my Striver looks like, but it looks
- 1:18:59like this sort of. It's not.
- 1:19:00It's not a running week, is it so?
- 1:19:02The only thing I do look at it when on those things is
- 1:19:05sometimes out of interest, I'll look at how many calories have
- 1:19:09been burnt during someone's gym session.
- 1:19:11Because sometimes I'll see someone upload like 60 minutes
- 1:19:14in the gym and it says like 172 calories.
- 1:19:18And I'm like, well, just because you've had your watch running
- 1:19:20for 60 minutes, you haven't clearly haven't been fucking
- 1:19:23doing anything. But then if someone's got like a
- 1:19:26900 calorie bear and then you know, fair play like they've
- 1:19:29they've had the good workout there.
- 1:19:31I watched a YouTube, so this could be YouTube Diaries.
- 1:19:34Actually this year, this week, I want to see that Jake Darden,
- 1:19:38Dearden, he's from the UK and then he ran, he ran A2 third
- 1:19:44like this. He's a big boy now and he ran
- 1:19:46like a 230 something and marathon and he's now doing a
- 1:19:50series like he's a pro hire. Exactly.
- 1:19:52And he's doing a series breaking 220.
- 1:19:55I sort of lost respect from him from a little bit there because
- 1:19:58going from a 235 to a 220 is like.
- 1:20:02Like crazy, It is crazy. And he's like, oh, like I need a
- 1:20:07big goal to like get motivated and I'm like, all right, there's
- 1:20:09different a big goal and A and an unrealistic goal.
- 1:20:12But anyway, he am done this high rocks in I think it was Hamburg
- 1:20:16and it was a video and boys, it's actually massive, like the
- 1:20:20organization how it's run. It's umm, the whole event is
- 1:20:26crazy big and professional and all them like have like their
- 1:20:30own names tattooed to their pecs and their back and it's fucking
- 1:20:34nuts and the chop. So there's 15 in the race.
- 1:20:36So it's a small race and umm, he I think it's actually coming up
- 1:20:40to Melbourne pretty soon. He he done shit in the singles,
- 1:20:43but the next day he had double S and umm, he was, you know, an
- 1:20:47Aussie guy as well. Actually was too weird.
- 1:20:48But umm, he ended up coming third in the double S, but was
- 1:20:51sort of like an emotional roller coaster of like he don't so shit
- 1:20:54on one day and then he did double S and he turned and he
- 1:20:57was just like a static like he couldn't believe it.
- 1:20:59And but I used to sort of take the Mickey out of high rocks.
- 1:21:03But it's the whole setup is it's savage.
- 1:21:06It's it is really, really good. So give that give that video a
- 1:21:09watch. Now he's going to try and break
- 1:21:12fucking 220 and Seville or something.
- 1:21:14And there's not a hope in hell of him breaking 220.
- 1:21:18But umm, just the way he videoed the high rocks was umm yeah, it
- 1:21:23opened my mind like it is actually massive.
- 1:21:26Uh, he's a Red Bull sponsored athlete, isn't he?
- 1:21:28So I bet he's got a lovely contract out of them as well.
- 1:21:31Guys, he was. Do you remember when Kip Chogi
- 1:21:33wore the headband that kills him in the Olympics?
- 1:21:35Who's fucking running around a hall with a Red Bull?
- 1:21:38One of them and another lad was wearing like nose.
- 1:21:41It just a hydro vest. Like how Long's the Hydrox one
- 1:21:44for an hour? An hour, Yeah.
- 1:21:46My guy was wearing of like a vest with flasks.
- 1:21:49Yeah, that's sort of. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:21:51Like because it's because I need to fuel, because it's an hour.
- 1:21:54There isn't good but. And there'd be no time to set a
- 1:21:57vest either. But the whole like the event was
- 1:22:00crazy but. So it was in Perth not that long
- 1:22:03ago. And yeah, one of my best mates
- 1:22:07was doing it and I was going to go, but I think it was like 35
- 1:22:10or $50 a ticket just to watch. And then the entry fee, I can't
- 1:22:15remember how much it is, but like, well, in the hundreds of
- 1:22:18dollars, like they, they, they print like we did, we did the
- 1:22:21math on it when we grab coffee afterwards and like they know
- 1:22:26how to put on and an event and they make a lot of money from
- 1:22:31it. And I think one of the things
- 1:22:32that really upsets me is like, because have you seen like the
- 1:22:35world record, the first K they've got, they, they break
- 1:22:37down the splits because it goes K run activity K run 88 by 1 K.
- 1:22:41And the first K run by one of these, like the dudes, it's 85
- 1:22:45to 100 kilos is like 245 or 242. And it's like you're not running
- 1:22:50that's you're not running that. But they're not, it's not a
- 1:22:52certified kilometer. So that none of this stuff is
- 1:22:55ever universal. Like I doubt it's, I doubt
- 1:22:57they're a kilometer. And so like, what are you?
- 1:23:00But yet all these people that break it, the magical hour mark,
- 1:23:03it's like you just fight. It's like fighting the shortest
- 1:23:06park run. And here man.
- 1:23:07So here's 1K splits, I think they're between like 3:30 and
- 1:23:113:20 for like a kilometer. And my guy wants to run a
- 1:23:14marathon, a 220 marathon. What's the is that 2 2393?
- 1:23:192910. Yeah, so we can't do it for a
- 1:23:21kilometer a high arcs, but he wants to do 42 back-to-back in
- 1:23:242-3 months time. Good luck.
- 1:23:26Yeah, there's multiple double troubles in that, but they are
- 1:23:28making a statement about what you're going to run before you
- 1:23:32run it and not not being within what a couple of minutes of it
- 1:23:36is probably it. It's not realistic whatsoever.
- 1:23:39It's it's like me going out and saying, all right, I'm going to
- 1:23:42run 13455K. Like there's not a hope and hell
- 1:23:46that I'm going to do that. It doesn't like, yeah, it's
- 1:23:49unrealistic. Was it, was it Ned Brockman that
- 1:23:52said he was going to break this light world record for was it
- 1:23:551000 kilometers and he missed it by three days, which I think's
- 1:23:59like 30% off, like to be 30% off something that's like
- 1:24:03essentially I could, I could be, I could say I want to run an
- 1:24:06hour 59 and be closer to that than what Ned was for that
- 1:24:10record. And then this is what the
- 1:24:12annoying thing is. Here we are now after like
- 1:24:14bagging the mouse on previous episodes and slagging them off,
- 1:24:17giving them the the time of day and they've built profiles from
- 1:24:21it and they benefit from it ultimately if they've got the
- 1:24:24bloodied personalities and not give a shit that people are
- 1:24:26like, are you a hypocritical bastard?
- 1:24:30I think my kids are about to come in here and bloody take
- 1:24:32over. But they but I think like the
- 1:24:34annoying part is when they say ahead of and they get sponsors
- 1:24:38and momentum off the back of this.
- 1:24:39Like this guy's now going to do a series and everyone's going to
- 1:24:42get excited. And it's like, it's not true.
- 1:24:44It's false advertising. It's not going to happen.
- 1:24:47Right. Yeah.
- 1:24:48Like that's why it probably showed up in my YouTube
- 1:24:51algorithm because. 2/20/20 Yeah. Click bait bullshit.
- 1:24:54Yeah, yeah. And 100% of participants will be
- 1:24:58wearing nose tape for whatever bloody reason as well.
- 1:25:01Have I said on this that I own and have worn nose tape before?
- 1:25:05No. Whoa, you probably let me do
- 1:25:07double trouble on it. I.
- 1:25:08Think I did this is earlier on, but yeah, they're called
- 1:25:11breathe, right? And they have like a metallic.
- 1:25:13Is. It doors by the mere Owen.
- 1:25:17Get around and they help you sleep.
- 1:25:18Multi multipurpose. Wear them for the day.
- 1:25:21I'll give you some for the next ride.
- 1:25:22Ride. You'll be able to hold my wheel.
- 1:25:27Should they see in the moment coming down Mounts Bay Rd. like
- 1:25:3060 whatever K into a 65K ride, like sensing that a couple of
- 1:25:37points throughout this ride, the guys like do these random
- 1:25:40sprints they have like a, you know, like an invisible line
- 1:25:43where it's first across it and then like the regather and get
- 1:25:46going again. And Dean's sensed his
- 1:25:48opportunity, like by the Swan Brewery there, you know, like
- 1:25:51down the river. And he's just fucking come from
- 1:25:53nowhere and put like 20 meters into the group.
- 1:25:57No one was making a move. It was like, boy, everyone was
- 1:25:59like trying to because in cycling that drafting effect is
- 1:26:03so material and you feel it so like everyone's just waiting for
- 1:26:06someone else and someone needed to have a go.
- 1:26:09You got it moving. I got it moving.
- 1:26:11I was a sacrificial lamb. I absolutely rolled by the end,
- 1:26:14but bit of fun. You're the lead out, right?
- 1:26:17So I reckon that was done just to preview next week.
- 1:26:21I guess it's going to be a big episode.
- 1:26:22We've got Valencia half, Alex E and Jake Smith from Great
- 1:26:26Britain are both running there amongst many others I'm sure.
- 1:26:29Maybe Callum Hawkins might be doing it as well, unless he's
- 1:26:34doing Valencia Marathon but I've seen on his if you have a look
- 1:26:36on his Instagram he's putting some ridiculous workouts
- 1:26:40together. Few of them boys from Team Macau
- 1:26:42are doing Valenciaf as well. Rory Leonard from G Day.
- 1:26:46Like, yeah, it's going to be stacked.
- 1:26:47Shit, it's like a who's who. Yeah.
- 1:26:50Is the Benny 10, which for those who don't know is a very fast
- 1:26:5410K in Australia in the island of Tasmania.
- 1:26:58Then we'll have the Amsterdam and Dublin marathon results as
- 1:27:00well as Owens race recap. So huge episode coming next
- 1:27:04week. Thank you very much for
- 1:27:05listening and staying tuned. And if you enjoyed what we're
- 1:27:09chatting about, then before you press close, just press 5 stars
- 1:27:12and we'll see you next week. See you guys, good luck.
- 1:27:15Thanks guys.
