- 0:02SPEAKER_00: I'm Daryl Stranger.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: The federal government has ordered a financial audit into transactions and activities at a landmark Indigenous languages office after receiving anonymous complaints.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Canadian Heritage didn't elaborate on the allegations against the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, an arm's length office set up five years ago after it was recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: There was no timeline on when it might be complete.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: A number of sources, including former employees, say that in its five years, the Commissioner's Office has failed to move the needle on strengthening Indigenous languages and supporting research.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Canadian Heritage said an independent review into the office is also underway as it's required under the Indigenous Languages Act every five years.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Outgoing Governor General Mary Simon has launched a project to fund community-based mental health services in northern and indigenous communities.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: The legacy project will be run with support from the Rito Hall Foundation.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Simon, who launched a mental health learning and listening tour in 2024, says the shortage of services in the North is acute.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: She says the project is part of her ongoing commitment to the Arctic where she was born and raised.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: The federal government is contributing$5 million to the project with a pledge to add up to$10 million to match any funds raised by the Foundation.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Prime Minister Mark Carney says Simon has drawn public attention to the needs of remote, rural, and northern communities throughout her time in office.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: A new shelter, primarily for Indigenous women and two-spirit people who are escaping violent home situations, is slated to open next month in Cornwall.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: The shelter will be run by the Native Council of Prince Edward Island, which plans to open the shelter this month.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: The shelter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with six bedrooms and space for children.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Those involved said Indigenous people prefer services that are culturally safe and supported, which is more difficult when they aren't Indigenous led.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: If the supports are unavailable, it's possible those in need will not seek out the help.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The initiative is a result of the federal government's response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, which was tabled in 2019.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It recommended the establishment of more Indigenous led domestic violence shelters.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: That's a look at your national Indigenous News.
