- 0:05Hour number two, welcome back Miller Incontinence, the Iowa
- 0:08Sports Radio Network. Trent and I take you until 2:00,
- 0:12top of the hour off the bench. Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts take
- 0:16you until 5:00, bottom of the hour thereabouts.
- 0:20We'll talk to Bill Seals. He covers Iowa State for the ON
- 0:24Three network. Let's get to a new guest on the
- 0:27program. Looking forward to this Chuck
- 0:29Freeman. He is part of the ON locked on
- 0:33network. He covers the Brewers.
- 0:36Must be a fun team to cover those this year and last year.
- 0:40And Chuck joins us for the first time.
- 0:41Chuck, they're never going to lose again.
- 0:43It's just seemingly night after night after night.
- 0:46They're kind of rendering next week meaningless From what we're
- 0:49all looking forward to how good Cubs and the Brewers are going
- 0:53to be in that five game series to start off next week.
- 0:56I don't think it's going to matter at all.
- 0:57Chuck, good to get to know you. How are you?
- 1:01Oh, great to be out with you guys.
- 1:02And it was funny. I was just talking to a guy from
- 1:05the radio station I work at and, and I said, I'm going out in an
- 1:09Iowa network and he goes, that's Cubs country out there.
- 1:11And I said, yeah, well, I maybe there's some Brewers fans in
- 1:14Iowa. We got a few little Wisconsin
- 1:18transplants that's a part of it, and northeast Iowa a little bit
- 1:21more up there, depending on what part of it you are.
- 1:23But you're right it it's definitely a Cubs stranglehold
- 1:25and a lot of frustration from the Cubs fans.
- 1:28I saw a tweet that you had sometime this week and you were
- 1:31talking about a Cubs game and and to paraphrase, he basically
- 1:33said that kind of looks like those stretches under Craig
- 1:37Council that Milwaukee had when they looked a little
- 1:39lackadaisical. Take us in a little bit and and
- 1:42deeper into that tweet, something that you saw in the
- 1:45past with Council's teams and, and somebody just sluggish times
- 1:48that his teams had when he was in Milwaukee.
- 1:51Yeah, it it kind of dawned on me a little bit last year and I and
- 1:55I put out similar tweets to that this season and last when I
- 2:01watching his team with the Cubs. And again this year, it's like
- 2:06we've seen some of the same things with Brewers teams when
- 2:09council was here. Sure, we have some good teams
- 2:11here, but games where they would just look completely flat and
- 2:17just going nowhere and you know, if they get down to nothing and
- 2:21they're throwing their arms up and and that's it.
- 2:24Like the other night, I'm watching the game Sunday night
- 2:27against Saint Louis, You know, they just a quiet night, four
- 2:32hits. And it was one of those games
- 2:33where, man, if I could hammer the live lion on the Saint Louis
- 2:37Cardinals that night, I would have done it because the Cubs,
- 2:39I've seen that song and dance before the Cubs.
- 2:42It might have been A22 game, but they were not going to win that
- 2:45game. And you know, I just, I feel
- 2:47like council's teams bad breaks go against him that stolen base
- 2:51at second base. And it's just like, God, I just,
- 2:54I've seen and I thought of me. I'm like, man, we saw some of
- 2:58that same stuff here. Just they, I just feel like when
- 3:02the Cubs hired council away, they hired the wrong guy.
- 3:06Thankfully, Pat Murphy is the better manager is the better
- 3:11manager. It's weird.
- 3:13I mean, he's got a chance. I I mean, I know it's happened
- 3:15before it had to have that you're back-to-back managers of
- 3:19the year in in a particular league.
- 3:21But I mean, how how's Pat Murphy not going to be manager of the
- 3:23year this year? Thompson maybe in Philly.
- 3:26Would that be the competition? Maybe Schilt?
- 3:29I mean, I think Pat Murphy's got to be home free as far as
- 3:31National League Manager of the Year, isn't he?
- 3:34I thought he should have been unanimous of the year last year
- 3:37and wasn't. He got most of the votes, but
- 3:39not all of them. And yeah, you know, you could
- 3:42talk about Shelton, San Diego, but look at the talent they got.
- 3:44Look at Philadelphia and look at the, you know, the billion
- 3:46dollar talent they have. And you look at Milwaukee and
- 3:49you look at all the injuries and they've even during this winning
- 3:52streak, they've had one injury after another.
- 3:54They they got guys who are producing like Trent Collins on
- 3:57this, Isaac Collins on this team who we've never even talked
- 4:02about in the in the offseason, who are who is up for rookie of
- 4:06the year now and maybe you might get some MVP votes and barely
- 4:10made this roster. The Brewers are doing it with
- 4:13guys that no one has ever heard of before and and no name guys.
- 4:18I think ESPN put out their top 50 list of Major League ball
- 4:22players, not one Brewer close to that list yet.
- 4:26They have the best team, yet they have the best team in
- 4:27baseball. You know, Trenton, I, I, I said
- 4:30that I liken them to Tampa Bay because no one knows who plays
- 4:34for the race yet. They're year after year after
- 4:37year. And it's kind of like the
- 4:38Brewers are so sorry. Trent, no.
- 4:39And taking that a step further, Chuck, help us out with this
- 4:42front office. You know, Matt Arnold, we talked
- 4:44about the Cubs front office and the frustration from the fan
- 4:47base. Milwaukee is one of the smallest
- 4:49markets in the league. They don't spend at a high
- 4:51level, but they spend a little bit.
- 4:54Is it Matt Arnold and the rest of the front office, the
- 4:56construction of this organization year after year,
- 4:58How do they do it? Well, what happened at the
- 5:02trading deadline last week was nothing.
- 5:05There was nothing or two weeks ago at the trade.
- 5:08The Brewers did nothing at the trading deadline.
- 5:10You know, they were, they were hoping to be in on Suarez and
- 5:13and maybe a few other guys. They did nothing at the trading
- 5:17deadline. They got Danny Jansen, a backup
- 5:19catcher earlier in the week. And Brewers fans were
- 5:22frustrated. It's like, man, we got this team
- 5:24here. How come we're not fortifying
- 5:25it? Well, the Brewers have gone 10
- 5:27and O since the trading deadline.
- 5:30They find they find these guys like Lockbridge who they traded,
- 5:34you know, they were actually sellers at the day led on.
- 5:37They traded Cortez to San Diego. And they get these guys who just
- 5:42seem to fit into their system. Guys who are hungry, guys who
- 5:46don't make mistakes, guys who have a master's degree at the
- 5:49strike zone, guys who are just going out there and you know,
- 5:53they don't hit a lot of home runs but are just hungry for
- 5:57that shot at getting getting into the majors.
- 6:01You know, they don't get a lot of national publicity.
- 6:03The Brewers don't. You know, the Sunday night
- 6:05baseball schedule comes out every year and the Brewers are
- 6:07never on Sunday night baseball. Rarely are they on a national
- 6:11game. And but they're one of the best
- 6:14teams in baseball over the last six or seven or eight years.
- 6:17They've had a little trouble in the post season the last
- 6:19several. But year in year out they've
- 6:22been competitive and they've been winning this.
- 6:25And I know it frustrates Cubs fans because Chicago fans look
- 6:28to the north and they say, how come that team up in Milwaukee
- 6:31is winning games? We're killing their manager.
- 6:34We're we're spending, we're going out and getting Kyle
- 6:36Tucker. Yet the Brewers just don't look.
- 6:40And you're right when you guys said of this at the top thread,
- 6:42the Brewers just don't lose. I mean who?
- 6:452025 and 4 over their last 29? Games, that's something.
- 6:49Who? Does that.
- 6:50Yeah, something wow and swept the Dodgers this year early in
- 6:54the six. Games six and oh.
- 6:55Yes, it's just remarkable. So I want to go back to last
- 6:57year, the final game of the year, the wild card series in
- 6:59Milwaukee. They're up.
- 7:01Was it 2 zip? They were up going into the 9th
- 7:03inning, Alonzo with the three run shot and they tacked on
- 7:05another one. At the time I thought, well, I
- 7:08just wonder if this Brewers team, if there's going to be,
- 7:11you know, what the residual is going to be of this.
- 7:13Well, obviously it's nothing. But how much do you think that
- 7:15drives them? That taste in their mouth from
- 7:18the success that they had coming at getting to where they got
- 7:20last year, having the lead, if it would have, should have.
- 7:23And of course it was Euchre's last game was we come to find
- 7:26out that, you know, he wouldn't live too long enough to see the
- 7:282025 season. But does that drive them at all
- 7:31the way last year ended? The last several years, you
- 7:36know, they can't get out of the first round in their last six
- 7:38playoff series, they're 2 and 10.
- 7:41Their record is 2 and 10. That's pathetic considering the
- 7:44regular season record and what what has happened during the the
- 7:48post season. The bats have gone silent.
- 7:51The bats have gone silent. And this year we're seeing an
- 7:55uptick in their offense. We're seeing an uptick.
- 7:58So maybe that's not the case. You know, we there's been great
- 8:02baseball team in the past who've gone through the regular season
- 8:06and they get to the post season and they lay an egg.
- 8:09You know, the 2001 Seattle Mariners won 160 games.
- 8:12They laid an egg in the post season and we've seen that
- 8:15before. Yeah.
- 8:17You know, these guys are hungry. They got what they need though.
- 8:20Guys they need to get they need a first round buy because the
- 8:23first round wild card series has got them last several years.
- 8:27The year before they lost to Arizona and that was not good.
- 8:32So they got got to get into a longer series and and that's by
- 8:35getting in the top two seed. And right now they're in
- 8:37position to get a top two seed. They just have to finish this
- 8:40thing out. Let's jump over to Jacob
- 8:43Mesirowski after being an All Star, the tremendous start to
- 8:46his career that he's put together.
- 8:48He's on the IL. He's got a tibia injury.
- 8:51I put that in quotes were on radio.
- 8:52You can't see me making the quotes that that are talked
- 8:55yesterday. I know Arnold talked about the
- 8:57GM maybe is he going to take a rehab start, innings limit where
- 9:01they're shooting for and you don't want to waste anything in
- 9:03a rehab start, I wouldn't think. Where are we with Miss Razi and
- 9:07getting him back out there and obviously having him for October
- 9:10the most important part? Well, there's no structural
- 9:13damage. It's it's kind of a bone bruise
- 9:15on the tibia. He took a shot off the knee.
- 9:17And when it didn't respond a couple of weeks ago, they
- 9:20mysteriously also get to the ballpark and miss Roski's on the
- 9:23injured list. Like, huh?
- 9:25And yeah, you're right about wasting pitches at the AAA
- 9:30level. They're very conscious that they
- 9:32want to, they do not want to overload him this season because
- 9:38he's pitched in the minors already and he got called up
- 9:41and, and he's been great at the Major League level.
- 9:43So there's even prior to this, there's was talks about him
- 9:47maybe coming out of the bullpen missing some starts and that
- 9:49because they're getting really conscious.
- 9:51That's the way we are in Major League Baseball these days.
- 9:54We're we're managing these guys and and trying to manage their
- 9:57workload. And so I think this injury, I
- 10:02don't know how much I read into it.
- 10:03If this was a post season, he for sure would be pitching.
- 10:06I just think they're using that as a little bit of an excuse to
- 10:10give him a little bit of rest. He's been throwing boy a bullpen
- 10:13sessions, but they don't want to overload his arm.
- 10:16And I think they use this injury just kind of a way to give them
- 10:20a little break, give him a little break so he could be
- 10:24fresher during the stretch run. Two more minutes, we'll let you
- 10:27go, Chuck, Chuck Freeman from lockdown Brewers is joining us.
- 10:31What did what did they find in Andrew Vaughn?
- 10:33How did they fix him? Because he was broken with the
- 10:35White Sox, A third overall pick, terrific draft that year and and
- 10:41deserved to be. Rushman goes one to Baltimore,
- 10:44Wit goes 2 to Kansas City. Here comes the White Sox.
- 10:47They take Andrew Vaughn, look like a bust, but man, he looks
- 10:50anything like that. How did they fix him in
- 10:53Milwaukee? What was interesting, they
- 10:55wouldn't have him if they didn't bring up Mizarowski because they
- 10:58brought up Mizarowski to start. They moved Savale to the
- 11:02bullpen, the volley said. He wanted to be traded because
- 11:05he wanted to be a starter. They, you know, they, they went,
- 11:07they looked down to the White Sox organization and they saw
- 11:11this kid who had been struggling and got sent down to the minors.
- 11:15He says he's made no adjustments at the plate.
- 11:19And I find that hard to believe because I, you know, I've heard
- 11:22the NF Major League MLB Network talk about that.
- 11:26He's made a few minor adjustments at the plate.
- 11:28He's had to because he's been Mickey Mantle at the plate in
- 11:31his 25 games so far. They brought him up and he's
- 11:36been unbelievable. But look at that journey.
- 11:38He's gone. He went from Opening Day start,
- 11:41first base for the White Sox, who are going nowhere all right,
- 11:44even though they've improved a little bit, going nowhere.
- 11:46He was so bad with the White Sox he got sent down to the minor
- 11:49leagues. He gets a second chance with the
- 11:52Brewers after Brewers traded for him.
- 11:55They put him down in the Miners. Reese Hoskins gets injured so
- 11:59they call him up and now you can't take him out of the line
- 12:03up. He's you cannot take him out of
- 12:06the line up. When Hoskins comes back, the big
- 12:09fella is going to be sitting off the bench in mid-september
- 12:12because this guy is your everyday first baseman going
- 12:15forward unless he goes into a mammoth slump.
- 12:19Is this one of those years where the fan base is all in?
- 12:22This is a different type of season.
- 12:24You mentioned the playoff exits and the frustration there.
- 12:26Do you, do you get that feeling that this year is different and
- 12:30the fan base are, are they getting that kind of same
- 12:32feeling right now, Chuck? And you know, I can determine
- 12:35that because right about now, win or lose with the Brewers,
- 12:39it's usually Packer season in Wisconsin.
- 12:42We're talking about the Packers. Not that they're not, but it's
- 12:45it's everybody's all in and talking about this last pre
- 12:48season game and all that. Now people are all talking about
- 12:52how are the Brewers going to do against Paul schemes tonight.
- 12:56My podcast has tripled the amount of viewers and downloads.
- 13:02It's been amazing. I mean, and hearing from Brewers
- 13:04fans all over the world, I heard from a guy in Bangkok, I heard
- 13:09from a guy in South Korea, I heard from a guy in England.
- 13:13Brewers fans ever were people who are jumping on the
- 13:15bandwagon. And one guy wrote me and told
- 13:18me, you know what, he fell in love with the logo the Brewers a
- 13:21couple of years ago. And with this witty streak, he
- 13:25ordered the MLB package and he's watching every game from
- 13:28Arkansas. So I'm telling you, I, I, I said
- 13:33kind of nonchalantly about a month, a month, six weeks ago, I
- 13:35said, well, I know the Brewers. Most of the Brewers fans are in
- 13:38the state of Wisconsin. And, you know, it's kind of a
- 13:40regional thing. And I heard from everybody and
- 13:43their sister say, hey, I'm down here in Florida sitting on my
- 13:46couch watching Brewers baseball, living and dying with these guys
- 13:49in Pensacola. It's amazing because you know,
- 13:52you know, the Packers have a nationwide fan base, Brewers
- 13:56with this run, they're starting to people are jumping on the
- 13:59bandwagon and there's plenty of room for it.
- 14:01A. Lot of fun.
- 14:02One final thing, you have a connection to the state of Iowa.
- 14:06Oh yeah, your buddy. Yes, Nick Osen, who used to be
- 14:10here at Iowa State, and not only that, TJ Otzelberger and you,
- 14:14what, You played hoops together growing up.
- 14:16I tell you, it's funny. When I was just out of college,
- 14:18I'd go to the YMCA and TJ played at high school here called
- 14:22Thomas Borg. And you know, they would come
- 14:25over and they'd play at the YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursday nights
- 14:29and the kids could shoot the lights out, you know.
- 14:31And he was, I don't remember him being as pumped up.
- 14:34I mean, the guys put on some. Looks like he hit the weight
- 14:36room a little bit, but but the guy, he was a high school coach
- 14:41here for a little bit and he just kept on moving up and
- 14:44moving up and moving up. Now he's one of the top coaches
- 14:46in the country, obviously, and he's recruiting some kids from
- 14:49the state of Wisconsin. But he's just been yeah,
- 14:54amazing. I played and this was 30 years
- 14:57ago played pick a basketball with him at the YMCA and and he
- 15:02was a great player on some terrific private.
- 15:05He played in a private school, Thomas Moore there on there, but
- 15:08he come to the YMCA and and I'd recognize that name and I'm like
- 15:12the way he just kept on moving up the coaching ranks.
- 15:14And so I've just kind of kept an eye on him.
- 15:16He probably wouldn't Remember Me again, this is 30 years ago, but
- 15:20I definitely remember him because he was a pretty good
- 15:22shooter at his high school. He worked out pretty well for
- 15:25him, no doubt about it. Good stuff.
- 15:28I wish he was a coach here in Wisconsin.
- 15:31Chuck Freeman, thank you for doing this.
- 15:33Chuck. Appreciate it.
- 15:34We'll impose on you again as we get close to the playoffs.
- 15:38I just hate to say it. I just was looking so forward to
- 15:40that series next week. I'm not sure it's going to mean
- 15:42a whole lot the way these Brewers are going, but they face
- 15:45skeet tonight. We'll see.
- 15:46It's sports after all. Chuck, thanks for doing this.
- 15:48Appreciate it. Go ahead.
- 15:50Baseball's a funny game. It's going to happen, don't you
- 15:53know? Yeah.
- 15:53They're just, you know, the dog days of August and then the
- 15:55September and all that. We'll see who emerges.
- 15:57But hey, man, I I I know people have contacted me and I, when I
- 16:01said I was giving their show. You guys are the tag team
- 16:03champions of the state of Iowa. Anytime you guys want me on your
- 16:06show man, give me a ring. You probably shouldn't have said
- 16:10that because we will. Thank you, Chuck.
- 16:12Good to talk to you. Sure.
- 16:15Yep, Chuck Freeman as we take a look at one of the stories of
- 16:18baseball. Yes, no doubt.
- 16:20Fan base was kind of they were down in the mouth.
- 16:23I mean, Great Council left them at the altar.
- 16:25Yep, so and not just left left for your.
- 16:27Division Right, right, right. 100 miles away.
- 16:29Where? You feel like little brother.
- 16:31Yes, you have the behemoth of Chicago.
- 16:34You're the the second city. Yep, all.
- 16:38The publicity that surrounds the Cubs.
- 16:40The financial aspect, on and on and on.
- 16:42Where would pet you know, if Council?
- 16:44I should have asked him this If Council.
- 16:46And it's hypothetical. So no, a true answer.
- 16:49Council doesn't leave. Where's Murphy?
- 16:51Is he still there, waiting his turn?
- 16:52Maybe because I mean he's an older.
- 16:54Guy, you know, he's, I think he's late 50s, early 60s, got to
- 16:58be. So you would think that probably
- 17:00nobody and especially today's environment, 20 years ago, yeah,
- 17:04you take a guy a shot on the veteran guy.
- 17:06Now it's about getting a young guy, right, Getting a guy in his
- 17:0840s, getting a guy that was a former major leaguer.
- 17:10Recently, that's what we've seen more and more that the old way
- 17:14of just wait your turn. It'll happen eventually.
- 17:16It's kind of off the board. You'll probably be sitting there
- 17:19and as the bench coach. I'll I'll give you the starters
- 17:22because they're really good, but Priester's been unbelievable
- 17:26Woodruff since he's been back. Peralta's had a terrific year.
- 17:29Devin Williams is, you know, Glon, thankfully.
- 17:32Look what he's doing for the Yankees.
- 17:34McGill gets the gig. But other than that trend,
- 17:36Kristen Yelich was was carving out a Hall of Fame career.
- 17:41I think he's back, but he's, you know, he's not what he once was.
- 17:44He's still good, don't get me wrong.
- 17:46William Contreras of the two Contreras brothers, I think
- 17:48that's the one, right? I think you won him.
- 17:50He's good. Wilson's had a heck of your got
- 17:52a World Series ring. Yeah, he mentioned Isaac Collins
- 17:55of the year. He's having unbelievable.
- 17:58But who are these guys? Well, Jackson Churio, we knew
- 18:01about him because of the contract, because of the
- 18:02contract, and he's been really good.
- 18:04Tarango Free like those kind of players were they're they're
- 18:09probably going to be OK. You know that they've been more
- 18:11than. Oh my God.
- 18:12When you start stacking those up, well, that's how you have.
- 18:14The and best record things come from behind victories.
- 18:17Yes, night after night. Was it Saturday?
- 18:19Night, the ridiculous comeback they had one of the nights.
- 18:21One of the nights on the weekend.
- 18:23Just remarkable that the way that ended last year, they're a
- 18:272 zip going into the 9th, about to advance out of the wild card
- 18:31series and Pete Alonso it's a three run bombed on the opposite
- 18:34way. Yikes.
- 18:36All right, so you don't think it's going to matter next week?
- 18:39It's still going to matter. Do you think it will?
- 18:42Well, yeah. You know where the Cubs are.
- 18:44For the next 3. Yes, you're Blue Jays.
- 18:49Drowning who? Hasn't been playing very well
- 18:52outside of against Colorado. They needed that game on.
- 18:56They needed the getaway game on Sunday and came from behind to
- 19:00get it. Then it's the pirates after
- 19:02that. OK, keep going.
- 19:04They go four and. 60 Pat Murphy's my age 66 answer your
- 19:08question. Thank you Baseball Benny, the
- 19:10researcher for the Miller and Condom program.
- 19:12Are the Cubs going to be in a spot, though we get to Monday,
- 19:14that they have to win four out of five?
- 19:16I think they're in that spot now.
- 19:19Because even going three and two, you pick up a game, pick up
- 19:21a game. And at that point, I mean, then
- 19:23it's all of a sudden August 20th, you're looking around
- 19:27saying we're still 5 1/2 back and it's August 20th.
- 19:30It's getting late early, it's getting later.
- 19:34Might this Brewers rotation be as good as there is in the
- 19:37National League? Well, it's.
- 19:39Better than the padgers, It's it's.
- 19:40Better than the Dodgers. Padres are OK Better.
- 19:44The Phillies would be maybe the only other.
- 19:45I think the Brewers might have the best rotation in the
- 19:48National League. And if we have.
- 19:49Mizuroski No innings limit, just who comes out.
- 19:52For Mizuroski they only need 4. Is it cantana?
- 19:54Yes. I I think it's preacher's been
- 19:58really good. Pretty significant.
- 19:59Though, right? I mean, the difference between
- 20:02the two, the the Brewer staff. I like the Brewer staff
- 20:06immensely. Yeah.
- 20:07Here's how the Phillies would stack up.
- 20:09Sanchez. Great.
- 20:10Great year, Wheeler. Terrific.
- 20:12Lizardo And then Ranger Suarez, No.
- 20:19Yeah. When's NOLA coming back?
- 20:21Well. And yes, that that changes the
- 20:23equation immensely. Taiwan Walker, I mean, come on.
- 20:27No, he's brutal. Yeah, it's the Brewers both in
- 20:31terms of top four, what you need in the play offs and in terms of
- 20:34depth. Give me Milwaukee.
- 20:36Don't look. Now the Padres are one game
- 20:39behind the Dodgers. We'll take a time out clone
- 20:44conversation next. Bill Seals covers then that's a
- 20:47cool story about DJ and Chuck Freeland who joined us to talk
- 20:51Brewers take a time out clones next Miller and Condon Iowa
- 20:56sports radio network. I'm Miller Condon welcome back
- 21:051:30 on a Tuesday Iowa sports radio network.
- 21:07Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you here until 2:00, top of the
- 21:12hour. Turn things over to to Alec
- 21:16Bussey. Just reading Alec Bussey to Sean
- 21:18Roberts and of course I forget about they're on the blank Lucas
- 21:23strain. They will come in, take you from
- 21:252:00 until 5:00 reading a tweet. We'll get to our buddy Bill
- 21:30Seals momentarily. Scott Saylor just tweeted this
- 21:32earlier this morning. This team from Worcester that's
- 21:35coming into play tonight, take down the icubs.
- 21:38First trip to Iowa by Massachusetts baseball team
- 21:41since the Salem Witches in 1887. Played the Des Moines Demons.
- 21:47Witches versus Demons. Wild.
- 21:50That is a note for diabetes, right?
- 21:53There it is. Let's get to our buddy Bill
- 21:55Seals. He covers Iowa State.
- 21:57Hello, Bill Seals, how are you? You had the coordinators today.
- 22:00Mauser and Haycock just got through with those.
- 22:03So let's pick a side of the ball.
- 22:05Let's start with the offense, start with Taylor Mauser.
- 22:07First of all thank you for doing this for us as they I guess when
- 22:11will they start to begin implement their K state week?
- 22:15Are they going to wait until No they can't because they
- 22:18Wednesday is a travel day. When does the the game plan
- 22:22start to go into effect? Will it be Wednesday?
- 22:24When did they start that? Well, I think that that that
- 22:28transitions already kind of started.
- 22:32Yeah, there were a few questions about K State asked today that
- 22:35both coordinators and got the impression that that's kind of
- 22:39under way a little bit and and they've started to to move into
- 22:42that mode. Yields just some comments from
- 22:45Haycock about Avery Johnson and and Heisman candidate there.
- 22:50Wonder what to expect there. K State always going to have
- 22:53good running backs, so I think they going into this game, they
- 22:59know what Farmageddon's mean. Iowa State's been able to come
- 23:02out on top a few years in a row here, but fully expecting a
- 23:07tough match up over there between these two teams, Ken
- 23:10mentioned. The Wednesday departure, taking
- 23:12off just a couple of days before the game actually begins.
- 23:15When you kind of look at the process, what they're doing and
- 23:18the thought process behind it, I personally thought maybe they'd
- 23:21head over a little bit earlier, get acclimated time, change
- 23:25everything that goes along with it because school's just
- 23:27starting. You're going to be able to
- 23:28figure everything out on that front and and there would be
- 23:31more time to kind of stretch out your wings.
- 23:33Were you surprised about the Wednesday departure time for
- 23:35Iowa State? Maybe a little bit, but Matt,
- 23:39Matt's gotten into this quite a bit in the, the preseason and
- 23:43his availabilities and consulting with he did a little
- 23:48bit with some college coaches, but it sounds like he went out
- 23:51to what, New England with Grable, Philadelphia Eagles.
- 23:57He's already got a good relationship with Nick Siriani.
- 24:00I believe they were roommates. Yeah.
- 24:02At Mount Union. Mm hmm.
- 24:03So he can fight it in Siriani a little bit.
- 24:05And I I think they've gone to more of a professional like an
- 24:10NFL team's approach to when they go overseas.
- 24:13And I think that's why you're seeing just the quick turn
- 24:16around and and Matt wanted to get them back.
- 24:19I believe they come back on Sunday and with the time change,
- 24:23they'll be back here in pretty good shape on time wise on
- 24:27Sunday to kind of get ready for a game week prep for South
- 24:31Dakota. What did you?
- 24:33Make of Mauser he brought up Eskelsen.
- 24:35We know soul in Townsend, etcetera.
- 24:38But Dominic Overby, I don't know if he went out of his way to
- 24:41mention him, but he certainly was a part of his answer.
- 24:44What didn't in your mind? What does that mean?
- 24:46Overby, obviously a big target, 6 foot 46 foot 5.
- 24:50Looks as though he might have caught their eye this fall.
- 24:55I think so. Kenny Overby played a little bit
- 24:59as a freshman. They definitely wanted to
- 25:01preserve that red shirt. So he's back.
- 25:04Eskelsen, the one they burned his red shirt, just with how
- 25:08important he was on special teams, he got a lot of of reps
- 25:12over there. So I think they really like the
- 25:14receivers that are even coming back.
- 25:16But I still think it was a no brainer for them to to need to
- 25:20go out into the transfer portal and bring in a chase so well.
- 25:24And Xavier Townsend. So I think between the four, I
- 25:28just mentioned that Daniel Jackson's another one, Eli
- 25:31Green's the name that comes up pretty frequently.
- 25:34He's actually he's healthy kind of battling some things last
- 25:38season. So it's still a a very deep
- 25:41position group and I would expect a lot of guys to play
- 25:44there just like they usually like.
- 25:46And we, we, we're going to see the targets spread out a lot
- 25:50more this season too. They, they played a lot of wide
- 25:52receivers a year ago, but what, 85%, maybe 80% of the targets
- 25:58went to two guys. Let's.
- 26:01Go to the guys that are going up against the practice over that
- 26:03defensive backfield. We know John Tez Williams is a
- 26:05stunt. He's an excellent cornerback.
- 26:08Jeremiah Cooper has been a playmaker his whole career, but
- 26:11he's still got three other positions to figure out.
- 26:13And there's guys that they brought in the portal like Trey
- 26:16Bell and then all those safeties that we've seen glimpses of.
- 26:19We've seen the little Jameson Patton, we've seen a little
- 26:20Neil, we've seen a little bit of James and Smith and and now Ben.
- 26:24You got Nagoya also kind of getting into the mix.
- 26:26When you look through the depth of that safety spot, those other
- 26:29spots at the cornerback overall, who do you think we're going to
- 26:32see the most of coming up here in what, 11 days?
- 26:37Well, I think what we'll start, we'll start with safety and, and
- 26:40one, I think the revelations of this, this fall camp has been
- 26:44Jameson Patton. He was a guy I think coming out
- 26:47of the spring, I probably, I, I would have said maybe Tayshawn
- 26:51James is going to be that boundary safety stepping in for
- 26:55Belik Burdon. But gosh, Jameson Patton has
- 26:58really turned it on in the summer and into the fall camp.
- 27:02He's probably the most vocal leader of those safeties that
- 27:05they've got. Obviously Jeremiah Cooper's back
- 27:08there as well. He's kind of more of a show it
- 27:10on the field type of leader. But Patton's just been
- 27:14incredible, I think this fall. So I think between he, Tayshawn,
- 27:18James, even Cam Smith's name's been brought up a little bit.
- 27:22But as we've seen with Iowa State, they like to play a lot
- 27:25of guys back there. But the bottom line is was you
- 27:28weren't going to get Beau Freehler off the field much in
- 27:32the last several years. Even Malik Verdon when he was
- 27:35healthy, he was going to play a lot.
- 27:37So I think that that's that's an interesting battle though
- 27:40between those guys. I think Cooper starts at at one
- 27:44obviously going to return at his spot and then and Mark Marcus
- 27:48Neal, he's a thumper that is going to be a multi year starter
- 27:52at Iowa State. I think that starts this year.
- 27:54So shifting over to cornerback. I, I think that I had it maybe
- 28:01as a little bigger competition between like a Trey Bell and a
- 28:05Benny Nagoya, maybe even Quinton Taylor a little bit earlier.
- 28:10We're going into camp and I think that now that we're what,
- 28:143 weeks, then I think this is Trey Bell's job, opposite of
- 28:18John, says Williams. He's going to start.
- 28:19I think Nagoya kind of badly timed injury.
- 28:24He has missed out on a few practices.
- 28:26I guess he's back now, but I think Trey Bell solidified his
- 28:30role as a starter opposite of John, says William.
- 28:33I wanna go. To the defensive depth,
- 28:36defensive line depth. But just one quick one on on
- 28:39Patton. Did did he does he have he's a
- 28:43true junior, I guess is where I'm going right.
- 28:45He played more than four-game. That's what I thought.
- 28:48That's too bad in some respects. All right, so let's go to the
- 28:52defensive line depth. Haycock.
- 28:54I'm sure he's meant he's he's hit all the right notes.
- 28:56Amir Hawk, Dominic Orange as as a wag, as a Wagyu.
- 29:00They they they think they have something there.
- 29:02They felt they maybe underutilized him last year.
- 29:05Is there enough depth there? Do you think is Haycock maybe
- 29:08concerned about the depth on the defensive front or is he
- 29:11satisfied in your mind? I think.
- 29:15He's probably satisfied on paper.
- 29:18I think they've got the depth, maybe not the experienced depth
- 29:22as far as playing at Iowa State. They went out to the portal and
- 29:26got 3 defensive lineman or defensive ends to come in and
- 29:31and play. So so that's sorting its way
- 29:34out. I think that I think Tomatola
- 29:37Mcdonough's probably a little bit ahead of Von Troy Malone
- 29:41right now. I'm probably going to see the
- 29:44Yale transfer, their start at that Leo Rush on the opposite
- 29:49side as the AGU, the one who who would have thought?
- 29:54I think he played just under 200 snaps last season and he's the
- 29:58most experienced DM they've got coming back and they need a lot
- 30:03more snaps out of him at that strong side edge and coaches to
- 30:07tell you too. I think they they thought he
- 30:09should have played maybe a little more last season than he
- 30:12did and he's he's going to get the chance to play a whole lot
- 30:16more this season. The night behind him, Cannon
- 30:19Butler, another one of those transfers.
- 30:22He's a strong side guy from you and IA team captain, a name I
- 30:26think a lot of listeners around the state probably pretty
- 30:28familiar with. He'll slot in behind Eziago and
- 30:32probably put play a fair amount of snaps as well.
- 30:35Does it kind of feel? Like 3 guys for two spots on
- 30:38that offensive line with Dylan Barrett, Brendan Black and
- 30:41Boniface. And did I see a note from you,
- 30:43Bill, on the message board over at Cyclone Report that Boniface,
- 30:47this is going out. We can read those now, a little
- 30:49tight end look that we're getting.
- 30:51Yeah, yeah. How about that?
- 30:53That was certainly newsworthy coming coming out of today's
- 30:58press conference with Mauser. But yeah, they they used a
- 31:01little bit of that type of guy last year and James Neil and
- 31:05Neil had been a tackle. It started they had Jalen Travis
- 31:09and still want to get Neil on the field and and James Neil and
- 31:12played a lot as kind of that flex out that sixth guy, that
- 31:17tackle eligible guy they never threw the ball to.
- 31:20But I I think Boniface sounded like he could be that guy and
- 31:24they're still going to go maybe heavy in some formations with
- 31:27six O lineman on the field. You know it strikes.
- 31:30Me Bill, when it comes to the tight end position, we, we know
- 31:32Bramer's his, his ability, at least we think we do.
- 31:36Unfortunately, injuries have prevented him from, you know,
- 31:38really showing the world how just how good he can be.
- 31:41But every time Bramer's names mentioned, Burkle's right there
- 31:44with him. And yes, he might have been one
- 31:46of the stories of the 2024 Cyclones from a positive
- 31:50perspective coming out of nowhere the him and the
- 31:52linebackers were forced into action, but Bramer and Berkel
- 31:55seem really joined at the hip. And I think today Mauser both
- 31:59referred to both of them as that Charlie Koehler type of clone.
- 32:03Not one over the other, but both of them in the same sentence.
- 32:06They love both of them. Yeah, they're they're kind of
- 32:09interconnected. Like you always heard Higgins
- 32:12and Knowles name even a little bit too.
- 32:15We we heard that from some positional coaches as well.
- 32:21You know, during the even like before the season started about
- 32:24how they well and even Campbell brought up the leadership
- 32:27qualities of both Berkel and Bramer and how they've kind of
- 32:31supplanted Higgins and Knowle as far as those two guys leading
- 32:35the offense. So they're they're kind of done
- 32:37getting the vibe like they're one A1B.
- 32:40They're they're going to be the field a lot.
- 32:42And when Iowa State goes 12 personnel and then I think
- 32:46you're also going to see Cooper Alexander, Tyler Moore, you
- 32:49know, Tyler Moore, I think might be that Steve O clots type of
- 32:53guy as well too. If they want to trot out like a
- 32:56a full back or an F back or whatever and, and, and have him
- 33:00play a similar role as clots. So certainly a lot of
- 33:03versatility in that tight end room.
- 33:06And then they they can still go 13 personnel like Mauser likes
- 33:11to go a lot. And that, you know, that's his
- 33:13position that he coaches as well, no?
- 33:15Doubt about a bill seals cyclonereport.com part of on
- 33:18three media course you'll recap all the press conferences today.
- 33:22And so what's the schedule going forward to get Campbell one more
- 33:25time before they fly out of here on Wednesday?
- 33:28And is that it, Bill, do you know?
- 33:31That is, yeah, we'll have Campbell and then some players
- 33:34on Thursday and they'll have that, they'll have that
- 33:39availability for us on Thursday and then that's it.
- 33:44They travel overseas Wednesday. From what I understand, they
- 33:47will have a brief little media availability on Thursday over in
- 33:53in Dublin. I think they have a a
- 33:55walkthrough or some kind of practice over there Thursday.
- 33:58So some of the local media over there and I think they'll
- 34:01probably put that up on the up on the cloud for media to
- 34:06download and stuff too. So going to be a little more
- 34:08they get over to that one. Good stuff.
- 34:10And then they're right back here and I think the coaches show
- 34:13goes on Monday night. So unbelievable.
- 34:15Here we go. September 6th, they'll be
- 34:17playing their third game. Remarkable.
- 34:19Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com, part of On Three Media.
- 34:22Keep apprised on the clones on Three Media cyclonereport.com
- 34:26for our buddy Bill Seals who joins us every week.
- 34:28Bill, thank you, buddy. Appreciate it.
- 34:30Yep. Thanks guys.
- 34:31Have a good one. Yep, good to talk.
- 34:32To you, Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com So I ran into
- 34:35Brent Bloom over the weekend. Oh yeah, yeah, he's going to
- 34:37join us from Ireland I think on the Thursday.
- 34:40Oh great. They're taking, there's two
- 34:42planes going players on one and kind of the support personnel in
- 34:45another and I think they had to get permission at I don't know
- 34:48if it's a different size plane that's coming into Des Moines
- 34:51International Airport, you would think well.
- 34:53Just got to have got to have more gas, yeah.
- 34:56Because it's a non stopper, it's not flying.
- 34:58To Lubbock, No, you're. No, and you're not.
- 35:00You don't have to touchdown and change planes in Chicago.
- 35:04So yeah, pretty cool opportunity for the team and and the fan
- 35:08base too. No, there's. 13,000 exactly
- 35:11headed over there, unbelievable 145 Trent's plays of the day are
- 35:15coming up next. They're sponsored by our friends
- 35:18at Circus Sports Circus sports sponsors Trent's plays of the
- 35:22day. That's next.
- 35:23Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:26Sorry, Condon. Final couple of minutes here of
- 35:29our program. Top of the hour.
- 35:30Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts, come off the bench, take you
- 35:33until 5. Are you going to be ready?
- 35:35Tomorrow night for. The reveal.
- 35:38Taylor's new album I Didn't Know.
- 35:40This was Taylor, yes. I don't know if I'll watch the
- 35:44podcast. Yes.
- 35:45You'll just wait for the Twitter reaction.
- 35:47Yeah, Which? Will be massive, yeah.
- 35:50How many? Shared the tweets how many
- 35:51records how many Internet records will this break tomorrow
- 35:56it's 03 response was the best response all of them all of them
- 36:00yeah it's going to be huge good for them so before we get.
- 36:02Into my picks of the day, Yes, Did you?
- 36:04Make them yesterday, by the way, two and two, OK.
- 36:06We got off to a great start and then it went back the other way.
- 36:09But two and two before that though.
- 36:13Last shot for Hard Knocks tonight.
- 36:15Yeah, for me, too busy night. Cubs, Blue Jays.
- 36:18That's very important. But it should.
- 36:20Be over because it's a six O 5 first pitch so you're going to
- 36:23be in. Good shape there.
- 36:24Going to watch skins against the brew crew.
- 36:26Watch my twins get throttled again.
- 36:29Got a? Lot of baseball.
- 36:30Going on, however, Padres. Giants is good, yes.
- 36:35They better have this episode raring to go.
- 36:36I'm with you. Oh, and do I give it the full
- 36:40time? That's kind of the question.
- 36:41That a whole hour you mean because I want to watch more of
- 36:45any given Saturday the SEC Netflix program Yeah I'm up to.
- 36:48Episode 6 Episode 5 Jim, who tweeted at us that you're going
- 36:51to have a tear in your. He was right, and this is the
- 36:53one that. I have up next and because of
- 36:55that I've been kind of waiting for that time, the family.
- 36:57I shouldn't have said no. Do you have hard docs?
- 37:00Better get it right tonight. Yep, or you're out.
- 37:03I kind. Of feel the same way because the
- 37:05baseball's really good. Next Tuesday, the Brew Crew and
- 37:07the Cubs are playing. That's right.
- 37:09All right, make some picks. Well, we're going to fade.
- 37:11Thomas Hatch, who apparently is going to start.
- 37:13I've never heard of him. Thomas down the.
- 37:14Hatch if you please, over 5. And a half runs for the Yankees
- 37:18tonight against my God forsaken Minnesota Twins, plus one of
- 37:22Thomas Hatch against. You Rodon?
- 37:24Yes, Rodon. Is getting the ball for the
- 37:26Yankees. I like the Cubs tonight.
- 37:28I'm going to grab the plus one O 8 against your Blue Jays, Ben.
- 37:32Brown's aware that he's starting.
- 37:34Well, that's a problem. Maybe they'll they'll trick him,
- 37:36yes. Let's.
- 37:37Get an opener before Ben Brown and not tell him that he's going
- 37:40to come to the game. It seems to work because out of
- 37:42the bullpen he was tremendous last week.
- 37:44Give me the Brewers never pet against the streak -125 against
- 37:47Skeens, and I got one in the West tonight.
- 37:50I'll take the Sparks. They're playing well when
- 37:52they're healthy. A much better team in the
- 37:55playoff hunt against the Liberty to just struggle to cover games.
- 37:59Speaking of the. WNBA my neighbor came, he's into
- 38:01it, said he was watching the fever the other night and
- 38:04Caitlin jumped off the bench to you know, and she grabbed her
- 38:07groin she got. Like stepped on it looked like.
- 38:10Is that what it was? Is.
- 38:12She going to play again this year?
- 38:14Doesn't feel like it's an easy answer, does it?
- 38:17Doesn't. I'm with you.
