Latest / Xenomania / Tucker and Dale vs. Evil: The Hillbilly Horror Comedy Classic - Xenomania 81
Transcript
- 0:01Jon: This week on Xenomania, when two hillbillies purchase a secluded cabin,
- 0:06it seems like the perfect vacation spot.
- 0:10Sure, the cabin needs some work and has newspaper clippings detailing
- 0:14a past massacre, but it's theirs, at least until a group of college
- 0:19students show up with preconceived notions and fear of hillbillies.
- 0:24The conflict between the two groups grows in increasingly chaotic and humorous ways.
- 0:30Will the lovable bumpkins overcome the college kids?
- 0:34Plus, the return of the Blind Rank, which will surely leave at least one of
- 0:40my co-hosts disappointed by his choices.
- 0:44This is Tucker & Dale vs.
- 0:47Evil.
- 0:48This is Xenomania
- 1:06Kearns: Absolute clown.
- 1:08Happy Fourth of July, everybody.
- 1:10Happy Fourth of July.
- 1:13Near miss on the beginning of this one.
- 1:15Jon: Which is that, that 4th of July wish will be a little late.
- 1:19We are currently July 3rd here.
- 1:23Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:23Kearns: Yes
- 1:24Jon: But you won't hear the…
- 1:25Ryan: John?
- 1:26Jon: It's Return of the Living Dead day, guys
- 1:29Kearns: That's when you're listening to this likely.
- 1:31Jon: Yeah.
- 1:32Kearns: Dead
- 1:33Jon: No, today, July 3rd, is Return of the Living Dead Day.
- 1:35Kearns: is
- 1:36Jon: Yep, yep.
- 1:38Ryan: You know
- 1:38Jon: The-
- 1:39Ryan: It's party time
- 1:41Jon: Here it is
- 1:43Ryan: It's party time
- 1:44Jon: Yeah, that's ca- that's on our calendar this year.
- 1:47I can't wait.
- 1:48I cannot wait
- 1:49Ryan: We got a lot of bangers this year.
- 1:51We got Return of the Living Dead, we got Halloween, we got The Thing, we
- 1:55got- We're gonna be covering Obsession
- 1:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:59Ryan: That one
- 1:59Kearns: We forgot about upstairs.
- 2:00Yeah, that looks good
- 2:01Ryan: body horror?
- 2:02You think Bring Her Back is bad?
- 2:04Wait for this ride.
- 2:06Kearns: Obsessions body horror?
- 2:07Ryan: this is gonna take the cake from what I've seen from clips already.
- 2:11It does.
- 2:12Jon: Find out
- 2:13Kearns: it's worse.
- 2:14No chance it's worse
- 2:15Ryan: Oh, just imagine a brick.
- 2:16That's all I'm gonna say.
- 2:18Kearns: Okay.
- 2:20have no idea where to go with that in my head.
- 2:22But anyway, for this one we're doing Tucker and Dale Versus Evil.
- 2:26Or is it Dale
- 2:27Jon: buddy.
- 2:27Tucker and Dale
- 2:29Kearns: it around.
- 2:29Ryan: Tucker and Dale, man.
- 2:30Kearns: and I had both not seen this movie, up until, you know,
- 2:33watching it for the episode, and we both enjoyed it thoroughly
- 2:38Ryan: a m- you know, it, it's a hidden gem I feel.
- 2:41Came out in 2010.
- 2:43You know, simple comedy horror that follows an interesting
- 2:47trope the hillbillies in the boonies are the villains, but
- 2:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:53Ryan: reversed when they're actually the good guys, and the college kids are just,
- 2:58they're, they're not thinking straight
- 3:00Jon: Yeah, I mean, really at the end of the day, it's only one of
- 3:03the college kids that's a villain.
- 3:05The rest of them are just sort of dopey.
- 3:07Ryan: Chad
- 3:08Jon: Easily misled Chad
- 3:11Kearns: Which is usually the case.
- 3:12this is the first movie I've seen in a long time that reminded
- 3:15me of Cabin in the Woods.
- 3:17It had that silly vibe to it.
- 3:19It was way toned down, and there's nothing supernatural in this,
- 3:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:23Kearns: it was super-duper, like, don't know, very similar
- 3:28Ryan: Yes and no, because I feel that Cabin in the Woods is a horror film.
- 3:34That's what it is.
- 3:35It's not… Like, you have little, like, comedic elements in it to kinda ease
- 3:38the tension, but it goes for that '80s horror vibe, while with Tucker and Dale is
- 3:44more of that comedy vibe of, like, Young Frankenstein or, like, Dracula: Dead and
- 3:50Loving It with a little more gore to it.
- 3:52And it's not really like that sp- uh, you can
- 3:55Jon: It's
- 3:55Ryan: spoof too, like a satire
- 3:58Jon: It's a, satire of the hillbilly horror.
- 4:01I don't know, I don't think it's quite like the slapstick level of a Dracula Dead
- 4:05and Loving It or a Young Frankenstein.
- 4:07It's, more like situational and it's like in the… It's, it, the
- 4:14funniest parts are Tucker and Dale and the way they perceive things
- 4:19Kearns: Yes.
- 4:19Ryan: Yes
- 4:21Kearns: I agree.
- 4:21That's basically the, entire movie is how they try to rationalize what's
- 4:28happening, always with good intentions.
- 4:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:31Kearns: always going horribly wrong.
- 4:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:33Kearns: great
- 4:34Ryan: Poor kid tripped and fell into the wood chipper.
- 4:37Kearns: Yeah, that Fargo vibes right there.
- 4:39That was
- 4:39Jon: Yep.
- 4:40Yep, like,
- 4:41Ryan: y-
- 4:41Jon: right from the start, everything about them is misunderstood by the
- 4:45college kids, and, you know, it's guided by Chad, who's there for other reasons.
- 4:51But I mean, they're doing it on their own too.
- 4:54You know, right from the beginning, they pass Tucker and Dale on the, on the
- 4:58highway, and, you know, you get that, the look between them with, like, this
- 5:02sorta, like, maybe slow-witted hillbillies looking at the car full of college kids,
- 5:09and they're at the same gas station.
- 5:11And, you know, Dale has a crush, and he goes to try to talk to them, and he brings
- 5:16the fricking scythe with him to try to… And then he's just like… He, essentially
- 5:21gives them the, "Hey, pretty girl." You know, and they… You know… Yeah.
- 5:28Kearns: Or whatever he said.
- 5:28Or going camping, I think he
- 5:29Jon: Yeah
- 5:31Ryan: it doesn't help that he's smiling and laughing
- 5:33Jon: Yeah.
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:34Ryan: advice
- 5:35Jon: Yeah
- 5:36Kearns: if you wanna point out, that is exactly what happens in Apex, by the way.
- 5:40It happens in Australia, but still, they walk into the convenience store,
- 5:44there's a couple of locals that harass Charlize Theron, and our, our
- 5:48villain actually white knights it a bit in the store, but it's, like,
- 5:51basically the same scene, but done
- 5:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:54Kearns: in Apex.
- 5:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:56Kearns: So that is-- It's so-- It's a perfect satire.
- 5:59They just nail it throughout the movie, and it's funny.
- 6:02Jon: Yeah
- 6:03Kearns: it funny
- 6:05Jon: Yeah, they, I mean, they do so many good things with this movie.
- 6:09so it's Eli Craig who's, you know, his return to our podcast 'cause he
- 6:14directed Clown in a Cornfield, which he did almost a year ago already now.
- 6:20Kearns: Hmm.
- 6:22Jon: You should go, you go back and listen to that one too
- 6:25Ryan: He's
- 6:25Kearns: Do it
- 6:26Ryan: gap with his films, uh, we were talking before the podcast.
- 6:29Like, Tucker & Dale came out in 2010.
- 6:31He did a film called Little Evil, which came out in 2017.
- 6:35Clown in a
- 6:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:36Ryan: 2025.
- 6:37His new one, which is waiting to be announced, uh, for a year or date
- 6:42to come out is White Elephant, which is a Christmas-themed horror film.
- 6:46But it's interesting that he has these gaps,
- 6:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:49Ryan: he hits it, I feel like, whatever horror, uh, genre he's going with
- 6:56or horror subgenre he's going with.
- 6:58Like, he hits it with Tucker & Dale.
- 6:59He hit it with Clown in a Cornfield.
- 7:01Little Evil I haven't seen yet, but he probably hit it out of
- 7:04the ballpark too with that.
- 7:06Jon: he paces things well.
- 7:08You know, he, finds people who do really, really nice effects work.
- 7:15And, you know, it's, he's found a, a little niche in there
- 7:19Kearns: Wonder what he's gonna do next
- 7:21Jon: I mean, sounds like the white elephant thing.
- 7:23I don't know what, I don't know anything about that.
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:27I mean, it might be a while
- 7:29Kearns: um, for those listening that don't know, White Elephant, to
- 7:32my understanding, is a game played often around the holidays where you
- 7:35do, like, certain gift giving in a
- 7:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:38Kearns: way
- 7:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:40Yeah, yeah, and I never understand the group that I'm doing them
- 7:44with, whether they're, like, doing serious gifts or gag gifts.
- 7:48So the one, the one I wa- the one I was in last year was apparently way more
- 7:53serious than I understood it to be, and, um, I contributed a shart emergency kit
- 8:03Ryan: To which the person who received it tried to give it back and trade, but we
- 8:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:07Ryan: they were not a part of it.
- 8:09Jon: No.
- 8:10Ryan: skipped it and they've
- 8:11Jon: Yeah, you weren't there in time
- 8:13Ryan: Yep.
- 8:14Rules are rules
- 8:16Kearns: Rules is rules.
- 8:17Jon: Rules are rules.
- 8:19Kearns: with the shart kit.
- 8:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:21Kearns: wait to hear who did it
- 8:22Ryan: oh, I, I'm the one who picked it, helped pick it for,
- 8:25for them, which was even funnier
- 8:30Kearns: Oh, boy.
- 8:31Jon: Yeah.
- 8:32Oh
- 8:33Kearns: so, um, Tucker and Dale, I mean, you begin with them
- 8:38going to their summer cabin.
- 8:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:40Kearns: have a, a holiday house, which is hilarious because it's all run-down, cabin
- 8:45that used to be used by a serial killer.
- 8:48Jon: Yep.
- 8:49Yep, it's the, first time you, get a sense that there's something evil
- 8:53that's not really Tucker and Dale
- 8:56Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 8:57Ryan: I just love the part when they're reading the news clippings
- 8:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:00Ryan: says all these horrible things.
- 9:01They're like, "Man, he is such a great collector of the news.
- 9:04Kearns: And they never circle back.
- 9:06never, she never notices them.
- 9:08Chad doesn't
- 9:09Jon: No, they…
- 9:09Kearns: them when he's in the house
- 9:11Jon: And, they never put it together really, Tucker and
- 9:14Dale even, who 100% see him.
- 9:16They're just, "Oh, look, he hung news clippings up." Like, not even
- 9:20like the recognition that these are about the Memorial Day massacre and
- 9:26Kearns: Right.
- 9:27It's bizarre.
- 9:28Well, they're, they're not dumb per
- 9:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:33Kearns: but they're not dumb.
- 9:33In fact, uh, Dale is incredibly good at trivia,
- 9:37Jon: Yeah.
- 9:38Kearns: which is a nod to a special diagnosis you can
- 9:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:41Kearns: they do mention it in the movie a little bit.
- 9:44little bit.
- 9:45Tucker's not nice about describing what that is.
- 9:49for the most part, he's not a dumb guy.
- 9:51He's just, like, naive
- 9:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:54Kearns: you know, a little bit less worldly
- 9:57Jon: Yeah.
- 9:58Kearns: characters
- 9:59Jon: Yeah, and
- 10:00Ryan: heart.
- 10:01That's what
- 10:01Jon: but…
- 10:02Kearns: either.
- 10:02When he carves the, uh, "We have your friend," he's got that all messed
- 10:05Jon: Uh-huh, uh-huh, which, I mean, again, completely escalating
- 10:11the paranoia without meaning to.
- 10:13It's all, everything they do that escalates the college kids'
- 10:17paranoia is well-intentioned.
- 10:19Allison falls off the rock and hits her head and is nearly drowning
- 10:24and they rescue her, but all the college kids see is them paddling
- 10:28away in a boat with their friend
- 10:31Ryan: Well, they accidentally initiate her falling off because Tucker's trying
- 10:34to be a little perv and Dale's like, "Yo, you, you can't do that." Which
- 10:38Kearns: You fucker
- 10:39Ryan: I just wanna give my flowers to, uh, Alan Tudyk, who plays Tucker.
- 10:44I'm a big Alan Tudyk fan since the days of Firefly.
- 10:46He plays Walsh.
- 10:48Um,
- 10:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:50Mm-hmm.
- 10:51Ryan: been Dr.
- 10:51Phosphorus recently in, uh, Creature Commandos.
- 10:54He's just a phenomenal, like,
- 10:56Kearns: He's so good
- 10:57Ryan: get his… Like, yeah, he doesn't get his flowers.
- 10:59He does a lot of special guest stuff too, and he's funny
- 11:02Jon: A lot of voice work.
- 11:03Like he's got, he's got that Star Wars money because he was KSO1 in Rogue One.
- 11:09He's got Lego money because he's doing voices for them.
- 11:13He's got Disney money.
- 11:14He's get- he's doing all right with the voice work.
- 11:17Like you may not recognize Alan Tudyk by face, but you know his voice
- 11:24Kearns: I mean, most people would recognize him by face too
- 11:26based on a lot that he's been in.
- 11:28I was hoping
- 11:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:33Yeah
- 11:34Kearns: Yep.
- 11:34That's, he's the alien.
- 11:362021 to 2025 that it is canceled, unfortunately.
- 11:40So no.
- 11:42Jon: Yeah, probably.
- 11:43He's got Spider-Man money in here.
- 11:45Like, he's done
- 11:47Kearns: looking right now.
- 11:48"The Tick," bro.
- 11:49Jon: Yeah.
- 11:49Oh, man
- 11:51Kearns: a legend right there.
- 11:52"Newsreaders"?
- 11:53I, I might just have to watch "Newsreaders" now because
- 11:56Jon: That,
- 11:57Kearns: looks outstanding
- 11:58Jon: animated Tick series, holy cow, man
- 12:02Kearns: So good.
- 12:03Ryan: one?
- 12:04Kearns: Yeah
- 12:05Jon: I, I think, I, I don't think the original run though, right?
- 12:08He's in, like, a more recent one
- 12:10Kearns: yeah, 2016 to 2019.
- 12:13Jon: Yeah.
- 12:13Ryan: in the live action
- 12:15Jon: They're, they're one of, one of the live action ones,
- 12:18'cause there's been at least two.
- 12:20'Cause there's one that Amazon did, and there was one with, um,
- 12:23Patrick Warburton before that
- 12:25Ryan: yep
- 12:26Kearns: Peter Serafinowicz the Tick in that too.
- 12:30Talk about another guy with a golden voice
- 12:32Ryan: I'm such a fan of the Tick since the cartoon.
- 12:34The Patrick Warburton one real quick does a decent job
- 12:37Kearns: I think it's Danger Boat.
- 12:39Ryan: but the Amazon one really hits the spot with it.
- 12:43Gesundheit
- 12:44Kearns: Yeah, he's, he's a gem.
- 12:45Jon: Thanks
- 12:46Kearns: Dale, what- Dale's not in much
- 12:49Jon: He does a lot of TV stuff.
- 12:51Kearns: Okay.
- 12:52Jon: I forgot what it was.
- 12:53I, I,
- 12:53Kearns: in this
- 12:54Jon: yeah, I looked him up in,
- 12:55Ryan: hate us
- 12:56Jon: the other day.
- 12:57He's, he's been in a bunch of TV stuff, like a lot.
- 13:01Like, not like one or two episodes, but like star, co-star level.
- 13:05He was in, um, a Hulu show a while back.
- 13:10Ghost maybe?
- 13:11It was something with g- where he can see ghosts.
- 13:14Ghosted.
- 13:16It's something like that.
- 13:17It was pretty good.
- 13:18I, it, it had like two or three seasons I think that
- 13:21Ryan: He's, he's been acting since 1991
- 13:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:27I think he was in an episode of The X-Files, I wanna say, like as a kid.
- 13:31Ryan: Two of them.
- 13:32Kearns: Maybe
- 13:32Jon: Yeah
- 13:33Ryan: the Cockroaches and Quagmire
- 13:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:37Kearns: got the intel tonight, baby.
- 13:39Ryan: love the X-Files.
- 13:41Jon: Yeah.
- 13:41Oh yeah, me too
- 13:42Kearns: needs to believe.
- 13:43Ryan: Oh, I
- 13:44Kearns: He wants to believe
- 13:46Ryan: Go out in
- 13:46Jon: I like
- 13:47Ryan: you see those ships, or, um, planes, airplanes
- 13:52Kearns: If mid-'90s me could see where we are with USOs and UFOs
- 13:56and whatever they're calling
- 13:58Jon: UAPs
- 13:58Kearns: um, UAPs
- 14:00Ryan: You
- 14:00Kearns: as well, like, well, that's a UFO now, right?
- 14:03Jon: Yeah.
- 14:04Ryan: Yeah
- 14:04Kearns: aerial phenomenon.
- 14:06Jon: Something like that, yeah
- 14:08Kearns: I would be like, "Oh my God, man, life's gonna be so good,"
- 14:10and boy, would I have been wrong.
- 14:13Ryan: I got you a show that he was in, Reaper
- 14:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:17Jon: Yes, that's right.
- 14:19Ryan: He
- 14:19Jon: The Kevin Smith series, yeah.
- 14:22Yeah, I forgot about that
- 14:24Ryan: "I've seen this guy before." What was the… I forgot the main actor.
- 14:28He was, like, in, I think, Grounded For Life beforehand or something,
- 14:31Jon: Yeah
- 14:32Ryan: for Reaper.
- 14:33But Reaper was underrated.
- 14:35UPN.
- 14:36Jon: Yeah, it, I mean, what did that last, like a season and a half maybe?
- 14:41Did it even get to a second season?
- 14:43Ryan: it did
- 14:44Two, two seasons on, oh, CW, I'm sorry
- 14:49Kearns: Two seasons on CW
- 14:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:53Ryan: for 2007-9 where the whole CW was overrun by shows like Arrow and The Flash.
- 15:01Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 15:01Ryan: is really good
- 15:04Jon: He was in one of the New Planet of the Apes movies.
- 15:07He's in, um, For All Mankind right now.
- 15:11That's on, is that on Apple, I think?
- 15:15Kearns: is.
- 15:15I believe it is.
- 15:16Jon: He-
- 15:18Ryan: It's
- 15:18Jon: So yeah, I mean, he, he works a lot.
- 15:21Ju- it's just he's more TV at this point
- 15:24Kearns: ones are, um, it is apple.
- 15:28It is the apple
- 15:29Ryan: Oh, he's in Zack and Mary Make a Porno
- 15:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:33He pops up, like he, he's one of those guys.
- 15:35He's, I think he's probably pretty easy to work with.
- 15:39I've- we've met him.
- 15:40He's real- really funny in person too
- 15:43Ryan: Nice dude.
- 15:44That, that helps
- 15:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:47Yeah, like
- 15:48Kearns: by the audience again
- 15:51Jon: Eiler Labine
- 15:53Kearns: Tyler Labine, everybody, is who we are talking
- 15:56Jon: I believe that's how I've always pronounced it.
- 15:58I guess it could be Labine, but I think it's Labine
- 16:01Ryan: It sounds like a Libyan.
- 16:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:07Ryan: Clothing line.
- 16:09Jon: But like this is the, this is the perfect role for him at that,
- 16:12at this point in his, in his life.
- 16:14Like, you know, he's built like a guy who would wear overalls and a giver hat
- 16:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:22Yep.
- 16:23Jon: Which I'm, I'm getting by the way.
- 16:24I wanted to have it in time by, for tonight, but it wasn't gonna be here
- 16:28so I haven't ordered it yet, but I'm definitely getting a giver hat
- 16:32Kearns: Gotta do it
- 16:34Ryan: Do it.
- 16:35Kearns: He doesn't even get credited on the show, by the way, For All
- 16:39Jon: one?
- 16:40No
- 16:41Kearns: No, he's not even on the extended cast list, which is an absolute travesty.
- 16:45He's looking good these days
- 16:47Jon: Yeah, he's lost some weight, yeah.
- 16:49Kearns: He's looking all right.
- 16:51Jon: Yeah
- 16:51Kearns: he's happy.
- 16:52Good for him, Tyler Bean
- 16:55Ryan: He's made it.
- 16:57I mean, when you get to that point where you can just coast in
- 16:59Hollywood and do what you love,
- 17:02Kearns: I don't know if he's at that
- 17:04Ryan: But
- 17:05Kearns: he can just
- 17:06Jon: I mean, he, he's
- 17:08Kearns: in the film can coast right now 'cause
- 17:10Jon: Yeah.
- 17:11Kearns: checks
- 17:12Jon: Yeah.
- 17:13I,
- 17:14Ryan: fair.
- 17:15Jon: how about, I bet, Tyler's doing all right.
- 17:18He w- oh, I forgot s- he was in s- the s- Second Super Troopers also
- 17:24Ryan: Yes, he was.
- 17:26Jon: He's one of the mounties
- 17:27Ryan: Yep
- 17:28Kearns: like the kid from, enough like the kid from Sixth Sense, we
- 17:32know it's not him 'cause that guy was, he was in Happy Gilmore too,
- 17:35Jon: Yeah.
- 17:36Kearns: exactly like you think he aged
- 17:38Jon: Deadbeat was the Hulu show
- 17:41Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 17:43All right.
- 17:45And the sheriff is another character that I was wondering if he was
- 17:47in, like, a million, uh, movies.
- 17:50but he didn't really pop up again
- 17:53Jon: Yeah, he's just one of those guys that sorta looks like it.
- 17:56He's pro- he's probably one of the most incompetent sheriffs we've ever seen
- 18:01in one of our, in the movies we've done
- 18:03Kearns: pretty bad, yeah.
- 18:04He's in a few things.
- 18:08Um, nothing that's like… "Cosmic Dawn" may have crossed your
- 18:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:14Kearns: Bad Building, what an interesting name.
- 18:16I bet you that's not a building you wanna rent anybody.
- 18:20Jon: Oh, maybe it is
- 18:21Kearns: a few horror movies in here.
- 18:22You've probably seen him in a few things that I haven't.
- 18:26"Possessed," I think that's the chick from "Species" in there,
- 18:29which means I might have to watch it
- 18:32Jon: Um, Natasha Henstridge
- 18:35Kearns: Let's find out.
- 18:36She looks like her.
- 18:39No
- 18:44Maybe that's not her, unless she had a lot of work done.
- 18:47No, it's Nicollette Sheridan.
- 18:49Jon: Oh
- 18:51Kearns: It's Ann Culver.
- 18:52A young Nicollette Sheridan, though.
- 18:55anyway.
- 18:55Anywho, that's for, for our
- 18:57Jon: Oh,
- 18:58Kearns: characters
- 18:59Jon: he's a, the sheriff is gonna be really buzzed about
- 19:02'cause he's in Backrooms.
- 19:03Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 19:04There you go.
- 19:05Jon: Yeah.
- 19:06He's in
- 19:07Kearns: uh, saw that pop up when we were looking for Van Helsing today to
- 19:10give him a little horror movie magic uh, which got me in trouble with my wife.
- 19:15And, uh, Van Helsing is not a horror movie, it's an
- 19:19Jon: No, no.
- 19:21Ryan: action,
- 19:22Kearns: the
- 19:22Jon: Mm-hmm
- 19:23Kearns: niche 'cause he said, "I wanna watch something with
- 19:24monsters," and then he saw Backrooms.
- 19:26I was like, "You are not watching Backrooms."
- 19:27Ryan: Watch Van Helsing or Monster Squad?
- 19:30Kearns: We got through… Well, I tried to do Little Monsters with
- 19:33him, and he's like, "This is a kiddie movie." He was like, "You
- 19:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:36Kearns: talking about, son."
- 19:37Ryan: about the one with Fred Savage?
- 19:39Kearns: Yes, I am.
- 19:40Ryan: not a kids movie.
- 19:41Kearns: what I was gonna say.
- 19:41It's the perfect movie for you years old, I thought.
- 19:45So we watched.
- 19:46Ryan: get to
- 19:47Kearns: But then when it was like, yeah, the face on the
- 19:50ground, that's a little graphic.
- 19:51But Van Helsing's got those moments too, where they're a
- 19:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:56All right
- 19:56Kearns: know, I got to enjoy Kate Beckinsale all afternoon, so I was like,
- 19:59Jon: Yeah.
- 19:59Kearns: with this
- 20:01Jon: You could pull off Monster Squad with him, I think maybe.
- 20:04He's right, he's,
- 20:06Kearns: monsters
- 20:07Jon: he's right on the borderline of Monster Squad.
- 20:10Kearns: He
- 20:10Jon: Yo-
- 20:11Kearns: watches like YouTube jump scare stuff
- 20:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:14Kearns: Head, and then he gets too scared to get up and pee.
- 20:16So this was a risk.
- 20:18This was a risk.
- 20:19Jon: Yep.
- 20:20Kearns: We'll see how it pays off for him, Cotton
- 20:22Jon: I mean,
- 20:22Ryan: Mis
- 20:23Jon: may have to, you may have to explain what nards are, but you could
- 20:27probably get away with the Wolfman, with,
- 20:29Kearns: they
- 20:29Jon: Monster Squad
- 20:31Kearns: and hit me right in my nuts.
- 20:33I'm like, "You're six, you can't say nuts that much
- 20:37Jon: In the crotch where, where my nuts hang
- 20:39Ryan: That'd
- 20:39Kearns: Yep.
- 20:40Ryan: great change.
- 20:41The nards.
- 20:42Jon: I sent that clip to you guys, right?
- 20:44Kearns: Yes, you did.
- 20:46Jon: LVJ ordering pants from Hagar.
- 20:48Oh my
- 20:49Kearns: good
- 20:50Jon: gosh.
- 20:51Kearns: down
- 20:51Jon: Goo- goo- Google that.
- 20:54That like, even without that, with the part where he's talking about his, his
- 20:58crotch and, and that area, the whole thing is just preposterous that like the
- 21:05president could call a clothing company and detail to like the, the owner's son
- 21:11exactly how he wants his pants tailored
- 21:15Kearns: That's great
- 21:17Ryan: it's a man who knows how he likes his pants and
- 21:20Jon: that his weight fluctuates up to 15 pounds a month.
- 21:24Kearns: That's a lot of meat
- 21:25Jon: That's insane.
- 21:26Yeah
- 21:26Ryan: Yeah
- 21:27Kearns: probably meat and beer, wow, wow, wow.
- 21:31Ryan: diet
- 21:32Jon: No
- 21:33Kearns: Well, I wonder how late-- how long did LBJ live for?
- 21:37find out
- 21:37Jon: I think he got to a reasonable age.
- 21:40I don't think he died terribly young
- 21:42Kearns: Residential doctors, I tell you.
- 21:45Ryan: Hmm.
- 21:46Kearns: But all right, let's see.
- 21:48Why don't we talk about a game?
- 21:50Jon: We?
- 21:51Kearns: Wait, how old was he though?
- 21:53Ryan: Um, that's a
- 21:55Jon: Mid-70s probably
- 21:57Ryan: Let's see.
- 21:57He was born in 1908, gentlemen
- 21:59Kearns: Kind of young for a president, sadly.
- 22:02Jon: No,
- 22:02Kearns: Okay,
- 22:03Jon: younger than I would've thought.
- 22:04Kearns: Yeah,
- 22:05Jon: than I would've thought.
- 22:06Kearns: It says 60s.
- 22:07Jon: Yeah
- 22:08Ryan: Yeah
- 22:08Kearns: young
- 22:11Ryan: 64?
- 22:11Kearns: No.
- 22:13Ryan: Yeah.
- 22:13Wow
- 22:14Kearns: way too young.
- 22:15one year over retirement these days.
- 22:17Womp, womp, womp.
- 22:20That's no fun at
- 22:21Jon: Seriously.
- 22:25Kearns: All right, kids.
- 22:26Jon: He didn't come tell it, right?
- 22:28Kearns: I understand you have an insidious game for us this week, John
- 22:31Jon: I mean, define, define insidious.
- 22:35Kearns: You made it.
- 22:36Ryan: excellent movie
- 22:39Jon: It's… So we're gonna go away from Stash or Slash this week.
- 22:43We're gonna go back to i- this originally started as a Stash or Slash, and I,
- 22:49I didn't… There's too many movies on here that are coming up, and I
- 22:53didn't want, you know, either of you to not be able to record an episode.
- 22:58Um, so we're gonna- we're just gonna blind rank them.
- 23:02It's eight movies.
- 23:03It's a blind rank.
- 23:05It's horror comedies, so you get that.
- 23:08It's, you know, no guessing.
- 23:10And we'll start right here with American Werewolf in London.
- 23:13Ryan: Why are you doing this to me?
- 23:15I'm
- 23:15Kearns: It's a tough start
- 23:17Ryan: I'm putting that at number two
- 23:19Kearns: That's a tough start.
- 23:22Number two.
- 23:23How many movies?
- 23:25Jon: Hey
- 23:27Ryan: There's a
- 23:27Kearns: This is gonna be four.
- 23:29This is gonna be four for me.
- 23:32Ryan: Well,
- 23:32Kearns: On the better side of the top of the, of the two halves,
- 23:35but still right around that middle
- 23:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:37Ryan: It's, it's so good.
- 23:38I mean, I got the, you know, the treat to see it later on, so I had a
- 23:42little bit of a better understanding.
- 23:43But I feel like if I caught it on Syfy as a young lad, I really would've enjoyed it
- 23:49Jon: Hmm,
- 23:50Kearns: Look at the top credit.
- 23:52That's amazing.
- 23:53Like,
- 23:54Jon: hmm.
- 23:54Kearns: nothing to do with this genre whatsoever, but you like this movie.
- 23:58Jon: Yeah.
- 23:58Kearns: it
- 23:59Jon: From the director of Animal House, a different kind of animal.
- 24:05I, I like that.
- 24:06Kearns: Yucky, yucky,
- 24:07Jon: all right.
- 24:08So a four and a two for American Werewolf in London.
- 24:13Movie number two is who you gonna call?
- 24:16Ghostbusters
- 24:18Kearns: Now we're just ranking them for movies we like
- 24:20Jon: Yeah, you're one, uh, how you would rank these one through eight
- 24:24Ryan: Give me Ghostbusters for three
- 24:27Kearns: I like Ghostbusters a lot.
- 24:31I'm gonna put it at five.
- 24:34One
- 24:34Jon: is the one
- 24:35Kearns: like Ryan, but down the line
- 24:37Jon: this is the one I got Allison with.
- 24:38This was, would've been her two, and she ended up with, I think it at six or seven.
- 24:44Kearns: Ooh.
- 24:45Jon: She was very, very,
- 24:46Kearns: it at five
- 24:47Jon: very displeased with me and the way I ordered it for her.
- 24:52Ryan: I mean, if
- 24:53Jon: movie number three.
- 24:54No, go ahead
- 24:55Ryan: I was gonna say, if you look at both movies, like, feel like Ghostbusters
- 24:59is great in the comedy aspect, but
- 25:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:02Ryan: and how it's filmed, American Werewolf's just got that
- 25:05Jon: Yes.
- 25:05Ryan: that stands out.
- 25:07But Ghostbusters has that zany fun
- 25:09Kearns: The effects
- 25:10Ryan: Ramis, uh, Murray
- 25:13Jon: So Ghostbusters is the only one of these eight that I don't have in my
- 25:19horror section in my, my collection.
- 25:22I have this in, in comedy, but it is a horror comedy.
- 25:28Uh, number three, Slither
- 25:32Kearns: Ooh, I do not care for "Slither."
- 25:35Ryan: I'll put that
- 25:36Kearns: I do not.
- 25:37I'm gonna drop it to eight too.
- 25:38I watched most of it, but
- 25:41Ryan: Y-
- 25:41Kearns: nah
- 25:41Ryan: a good film.
- 25:43It's good.
- 25:43Jon: love Slither
- 25:45Ryan: Michael Rooker
- 25:47Kearns: You would, you insidious bastard
- 25:49Jon: I love this movie
- 25:52Ryan: like how they move.
- 25:52Nathan Fillion's in it too, right?
- 25:54He's
- 25:54Jon: Yep.
- 25:55And Elizabeth Banks
- 25:57Ryan: Yep
- 25:58Kearns: Elizabeth Banks
- 25:59Jon: Yeah.
- 26:00All right, so number, movie number f-
- 26:02Kearns: on career.
- 26:04We have to do that when we get back, by the way.
- 26:07We left Allison out
- 26:09Jon: Yeah.
- 26:10Uh, number four, Return of the Living Dead.
- 26:15They're back from the grave and ready to party
- 26:19Kearns: I do like this one too.
- 26:20It's not as high up for me in the Living- in the Dead movies
- 26:25as, you know, it could be.
- 26:29it's more '80s than the other ones.
- 26:31It's
- 26:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:32Kearns: to it, and that's not necessarily a good thing in my mind.
- 26:35But it's funnier
- 26:38Um, I, I'm scared to put this at three, but I kinda wanna put it at three.
- 26:44I'm gonna do it.
- 26:45I'm gonna do it.
- 26:45I'm putting it at three, and then five for Rion
- 26:52Jon: Brian?
- 26:53Ryan: Oh, five.
- 26:54Jon: Five
- 26:56Ryan: Yeah, I'd put it higher, but
- 26:59Jon: But you already used those spots.
- 27:01Ryan: I use two and three.
- 27:02Yeah.
- 27:03So f- five is the safe for me.
- 27:06Jon: All right
- 27:06Ryan: for a specific one, so we'll see
- 27:09Jon: Mm, we'll see if that pays off.
- 27:11Um, so let's recap halfway through.
- 27:14Uh, Kearns, you have one, two, six, and seven left.
- 27:19Ryan, you have one, four, six, and seven
- 27:24All right, some movie number five is Dead Alive
- 27:31Kearns: Number two.
- 27:35Number two.
- 27:37enough for me
- 27:39Ryan: I'll put it at six
- 27:41Jon: Correct
- 27:43Kearns: Oh my gosh
- 27:45Jon: So at this point I ju- I just wanna ask 'cause neither of
- 27:49you have used one, are you waiting for something in particular?
- 27:53Ryan: Yes.
- 27:53Kearns: Yes.
- 27:56Jon: What are you waiting for?
- 27:57Kearns: Strong in the dead
- 27:59Ryan: Oh.
- 28:00Jon: Ryan, what are you waiting for?
- 28:01Oh, interesting.
- 28:04Interesting
- 28:06Ryan: thing.
- 28:06If Shaun of the Dead comes up and it's the last film and my number one
- 28:10is open, that is a worthy number one.
- 28:12Shaun of the Dead is a classic comedy horror
- 28:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:16Ryan: Seen
- 28:17Jon: right, well
- 28:17Kearns: a huge homage to Young Frankenstein in my basement, by the
- 28:22way, and I might end up putting it at number seven or number eight.
- 28:25That's sad
- 28:28Jon: All right.
- 28:29Ryan: That is,
- 28:29Jon: Let, well, let's, let's see how disappointed you guys are gonna be.
- 28:33Next, Zombieland
- 28:36Ryan: um
- 28:37Kearns: I would have put this above Ghostbusters if I could
- 28:40Ryan: Yeah, I would, I'll put it at four
- 28:43Jon: All right.
- 28:44Kearns: I have one, seven, and eight left
- 28:46Jon: You have one, six, and seven left
- 28:49Kearns: Oh, one, six, and seven left.
- 28:50All right, I, six it is, Zombieland.
- 28:52Six it is.
- 28:53Jon: You know, right?
- 28:54All right, so you both have one and seven left
- 28:59Kearns: That's great.
- 29:00Jon: Yeah.
- 29:02I don't know about that
- 29:04Ryan: Let's see
- 29:05Jon: Let's see which one of you is gonna be disappointed.
- 29:09Ah, here's movie seven.
- 29:10It's Army of Darkness
- 29:14Kearns: Ah,
- 29:15Ryan: though?
- 29:16Kearns: that's, that's,
- 29:17Ryan: You-
- 29:17Kearns: that's gotta go to one.
- 29:19Yeah, I can't put that at seven, bro.
- 29:21Ryan: Army of Darkness is one
- 29:23Kearns: "Here's my boom stick. Shop smart, shop S-Mart." We
- 29:27quoted this movie for 10 years.
- 29:29Longer, but it
- 29:30Jon: Yep.
- 29:30Kearns: a bit
- 29:32Jon: Yeah, all right.
- 29:34That means you guys have, both have your number seven left
- 29:38Kearns: And if you put one of those two movies that we were hoping for as
- 29:41the last pick, you're such a bastard.
- 29:43Ryan: be Young Frankenstein, I bet you any
- 29:46Kearns: Frank, yeah, he definitely did.
- 29:47Look at him.
- 29:48Ryan: Young Frankenstein
- 29:49Kearns: Look at him.
- 29:51Aw.
- 29:52Jon: this is one of my favorite ones ever.
- 29:54Yeah, you guys would be heartbroken to lose this one for eternity.
- 29:58Kearns: It is
- 29:59Jon: Movie number eight, it's Shaun of the Dead
- 30:03Ryan: I can
- 30:03Kearns: I-
- 30:04Ryan: that at number seven.
- 30:05I don't know about you, Current
- 30:07Kearns: No.
- 30:08Jon: No.
- 30:08A
- 30:09Kearns: Uh,
- 30:10Jon: is way too low for Sean
- 30:13Ryan: I'm kinda
- 30:14Kearns: put it at… I would've put it, uh, easily reverse this with
- 30:17Return of the Living Dead, and that would've made me happy with my list
- 30:20Ryan: Mm. No, I can keep Return at five, Sean at seven.
- 30:25switch that with… Ah, you can't switch that with Dead Alive
- 30:28Kearns: Nah, Dead Alive's good where it is.
- 30:30Return to seven, this to, to three I think is where I have it.
- 30:35Have Return and I would've been okay.
- 30:38Ryan: I'm
- 30:38Kearns: Bummer.
- 30:39Bummer
- 30:41Jon: Um, I, I couldn't put Young Frankenstein on here because I think it's
- 30:45too much comedy and not enough horror.
- 30:48Kearns: Yeah, it's,
- 30:49Jon: Same, same thing with Dracula: Dead and Loving It.
- 30:52Like, I couldn't put it o- that on here because it's, w- too
- 30:55comedy, not enough horror for me
- 30:57Ryan: Dracula I can say yes, I agree with that.
- 31:00Young Frankenstein though borrows so much from Frankenstein bride and, uh, Son of
- 31:05Jon: Oh, yeah, he, no
- 31:07Ryan: like, it, it's like, I don't know, that's where I feel like it
- 31:10goes into that horror trope a little
- 31:11Kearns: It
- 31:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:13Kearns: with them
- 31:14Jon: No, no doubt.
- 31:15It just feels like the slapsticky elements of that put it too horror,
- 31:21uh, too comedy for me rather.
- 31:23It's just…
- 31:24Ryan: hand?
- 31:25Jon: The, just the whole thing is the, the whole thing is just a
- 31:28little more comedy for me than, than I would have for a horror comedy.
- 31:35Ryan: So when
- 31:35Jon: I love Young Frankenstein, don't get me wrong.
- 31:38It's, like, probably one of my 10 favorite comedies, but
- 31:42Ryan: So when you get into horror comedy, you're really
- 31:44thinking like more it's like-
- 31:45Jon: want, I want the horror elements too.
- 31:48Ryan: Okay
- 31:48Jon: I want strong horror elements in my horror comedies
- 31:52Ryan: So it's like
- 31:53Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 31:53Ryan: your-- it's more of the subgenre type.
- 31:55Like you get that horror as the basic.
- 31:57Like,
- 31:57Jon: Mm-hmm
- 31:57Ryan: um, you could have, you could have even thrown Frighteners on there
- 32:01Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 32:02Kearns: Very nice
- 32:03Jon: absolutely.
- 32:04But f- yeah, Fright, Fright Night, I didn't wanna put two Peter
- 32:08Jacksons on there though, so
- 32:10Ryan: That would have killed me, 'cause I would have put that
- 32:12higher than Army of the Darkness.
- 32:14I love Frighteners.
- 32:17It's a
- 32:17Jon: Frighteners is a good movie.
- 32:18Frighteners is a good movie.
- 32:20Ryan: That
- 32:21Jon: Really nice, really nice foreign, uh, 4K of it too
- 32:26Kearns: Got a good Buc-ee in it
- 32:28Jon: Yeah.
- 32:28It's Jake
- 32:30Ryan: Good old
- 32:31Kearns: All right.
- 32:32So we did skip over Katrina Bowden, who plays
- 32:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:36We did.
- 32:37Kearns: Three Double D,
- 32:39Jon: Yeah
- 32:39Kearns: by the way, is funny.
- 32:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:44Kearns: not really.
- 32:45She didn't go on a huge things.
- 32:47Jon: No
- 32:48Ryan: She
- 32:48Kearns: Great White, which might be based off of a very good book.
- 32:52She… Oh, she was?
- 32:54Ryan: Yep, the fourth and final
- 32:55Kearns: Monolith.
- 32:58Ryan: Oh
- 33:00Kearns: Um, yeah, not much.
- 33:01A lot of B horror movies or at le-
- 33:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:03Kearns: the very least, um… Oh, she was in Old Dads
- 33:08Jon: Oh my gosh.
- 33:10Kearns: Scary Movie 5 Freaks out a bit, but not much.
- 33:15Not much.
- 33:16So she, she's kinda, yeah, she's kinda is what it is sorta thing.
- 33:20Jon: Mm-hmm
- 33:21Kearns: a, A Christmas in New Hope.
- 33:24She's in a Hallmark movie, which is the sign of a dying career.
- 33:29Ryan: Oh.
- 33:30Jon: I, I, I bet, I bet there's some decent residual checks in
- 33:34there 'cause they just air this, them over and over every year.
- 33:37Ryan: Yeah, they do
- 33:39Jon: Those, those Hallmark movies air 24/7 on a couple of those channels
- 33:43once you get past Thanksgiving
- 33:46Ryan: Yes, they
- 33:47Kearns: He's in a movie with some, with Jackson?
- 33:50Is that Sam Jackson?
- 33:52Ryan: Snakes on
- 33:52Kearns: The Unholy Trinity?
- 33:55If only.
- 33:56Jon: I don't think I know the Unholy Trinity
- 33:59Kearns: that is Sam Jackson.
- 34:00It looks like Harry Potter, Pierce Brosnan, and Sam Jackson are in
- 34:04this movie based on this picture.
- 34:05It's not Harry Potter, it's Brandon Lessard.
- 34:09But she sure in it
- 34:12Ryan: Mixed reviews.
- 34:14Seems like a
- 34:14Kearns: This is weird
- 34:16Ryan: Yeah, direct to home video
- 34:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:20As Sam, so this is bizarre too though.
- 34:22Sam Jackson's on the cover but not given… Oh, there he is.
- 34:25He's like the 16th person down on the cast listing
- 34:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:29Yeah, we're gonna… We put him in the movie so we can put him
- 34:32on the, on the poster, but he's in here for about 10 seconds.
- 34:36Ryan: That's
- 34:36Kearns: Likely, yeah
- 34:37Jon: He g- he come, he comes through and mother Fs a couple
- 34:40people, and that's, that's his role
- 34:45Ryan: We out here
- 34:46Kearns: That's funny.
- 34:48We out here in the West
- 34:50Jon: But she, she works as Allison in Tucker and Dale.
- 34:54Kearns: Yeah, she's good
- 34:55Jon: She, she does a really, I mean, the, it doesn't require her to do a whole
- 35:00lot except get knocked out a few times.
- 35:03But, you know, the scene, her scenes with Dale become really believable.
- 35:08They, they really, they sell that, like at the Beauty and the Beast sort of angle
- 35:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:15they like, "I was a-- I grew up on a farm." You're like figuring out that
- 35:18she's actually quite a good match for him
- 35:20Jon: Yeah.
- 35:21Yeah
- 35:22Kearns: they drop their prejudices.
- 35:23Well, he never had any.
- 35:24She drops her prejudices
- 35:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:27And, and like really her prejudices are more not even direct prejudice
- 35:33so much as just misconception by the way Dale presents himself.
- 35:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:38Jon: You know?
- 35:39And then,
- 35:39Kearns: any young lady should re-
- 35:40Jon: mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 35:42And then r- like the next time she sees Tucker his face is all bee stung
- 35:47so he looks… Like, and that, 'cause that's really the other thing they
- 35:51do aside from like every action that Dale makes being creepy, everything
- 35:57Tucker does makes him look worse
- 36:00Kearns: Yeah
- 36:01Ryan: Well, let's go back to the bee sting real quick 'cause that's pretty goes, he's
- 36:05cutting a tree limb with the
- 36:07Jon: Uh-huh.
- 36:08Ryan: nest and he's like flailing
- 36:09Jon: Uh-huh.
- 36:10Ryan: college
- 36:10Jon: He f- flailing around with the chainsaw and running through the
- 36:14woods in the direction of the college kids that he, he's not even aware of.
- 36:19You know, and then they all start running, and he's running alongside one of them
- 36:23who's clearly afraid that he's being chased by the guy with the chainsaw
- 36:29to the point where he's not looking where he runs, and he impales himself
- 36:34on a branch while, you know, Tucker's waving the chainsaw a- yelling, "Bees!"
- 36:42Kearns: It's her first accidental deceasement
- 36:44Jon: Yep
- 36:46Ryan: Well, he all thought, he thought they were all allergic.
- 36:48That's why they were running.
- 36:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:51They must be allergic to bees.
- 36:53They left
- 36:54Ryan: but that leads to the whole thing when they're digging the
- 36:56outhouse and they're thinking
- 36:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:58Ryan: her grave.
- 36:59They're making her
- 37:00Jon: Yeah.
- 37:01Yeah.
- 37:01Ryan: is another good scene where the kid
- 37:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:04Ryan: with the staff or the
- 37:05Kearns: Yeah, it's the second
- 37:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:07Kearns: in 15 minutes, and then we get the wood chipper.
- 37:10The guy goes into the
- 37:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:11Kearns: three college
- 37:12Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:13Kearns: that.
- 37:14Jon: I think it's four from there, yeah
- 37:16Kearns: Yeah
- 37:16Ryan: one of my, that's my second favorite, like, un- you know,
- 37:21unalive moment in the film.
- 37:23The first one, we'll, we'll get to later when it comes up in the cabin.
- 37:28Jon: Oh, see, see the wood chip, with the wood chipper is the one
- 37:31that, that makes me laugh the most.
- 37:33Like, and then you, and then, and then you,
- 37:36Kearns: in
- 37:36Jon: you get the visual of the, the, the two of them trying to get the
- 37:41bottom half of him out of the chainsaw.
- 37:43And wow, he's heavy for half a guy or have- whatever.
- 37:47Like, and you, and you, you know, you get Allison getting knocked out again
- 37:53and waking up and, and Dale asking her, "Do your friends take medication?"
- 37:59'Cause I don't think-
- 38:00Kearns: guy's legs if he's all right.
- 38:03"Are you okay?" Afterword, that's pretty good too.
- 38:07It's just a good, goofy movie
- 38:09Jon: Yeah, like a- until, until the college kids lay siege
- 38:14to the cabin, Tucker and Dale have no clue what's going on.
- 38:21Like, none whatsoever
- 38:24Kearns: They're just, they think it's a big misunderstanding
- 38:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:30Kearns: like their s-
- 38:30Jon: they have,
- 38:31Kearns: option
- 38:32Jon: they have a self-unaliving pact
- 38:35Kearns: Yes, which is pretty funny.
- 38:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:38Kearns: Just
- 38:38Jon: And that, and that they're coming after Allison because
- 38:41she's not taking part in it.
- 38:43Like, it's insane
- 38:45Kearns: It is.
- 38:46And the sheriff goes, goes in a silly way, too.
- 38:48The,
- 38:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:50Kearns: that with the beam in the beginning of the mo-
- 38:51Jon: Yeah.
- 38:52Mm-hmm.
- 38:52Kearns: of the movie.
- 38:53Jon: Yeah
- 38:54Kearns: The sheriff eats it.
- 38:55He eats it pretty badly, too.
- 38:56Jon: Yeah, it is.
- 38:57Yeah
- 38:58Kearns: rough way to go
- 38:59Ryan: that they don't warn him quickly?
- 39:01They warn her, Allison quickly though.
- 39:04"Don't, don't do that." And then with the sheriff, they warn him
- 39:07after the fact, and then he gets
- 39:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:10Well, I, I, I think with the sheriff, the stakes are different
- 39:13too, because at that point they're completely uno- caught unaware.
- 39:18Like, "Why is, why does the cop wanna talk to us?" And like, I
- 39:22mean, right from the start, Tucker's like, "We've had a doozy of a day.
- 39:28You're not gonna believe this," but
- 39:32Ryan: These kids
- 39:33Jon: right, he's not gonna believe it.
- 39:34There's, you know, there's a body in the yard.
- 39:37There's like leg- You guys are covered in blood.
- 39:40Kearns: yeah, they were
- 39:41Jon: You're carrying legs
- 39:44Kearns: It was not good.
- 39:45It was
- 39:46Jon: Yeah.
- 39:47Kearns: Allison does very well
- 39:49Jon: Mm-hmm
- 39:51Kearns: Uh, I'm not necessarily sure if she's aware of her
- 39:56friends' fates throughout
- 39:58Ryan: Not,
- 39:59Kearns: Like, one of them is already deceased
- 40:02Jon: Yeah
- 40:03Kearns: digging with him, and they're like sort of, you know,
- 40:05getting to know each other better and
- 40:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:08Yeah, I mean, she's knocked out for the one that impales himself in the, pit too
- 40:14Ryan: Yep.
- 40:16'Cause
- 40:17Kearns: It's true
- 40:17Jon: Yeah.
- 40:18Yeah
- 40:19Kearns: Amy turns around.
- 40:21She's knocked out for half the movie
- 40:23Jon: Yeah, I don't, I don't think she's aware really of how bad things have
- 40:28gotten until the fire towards the end
- 40:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:31But she does her psychology with Chad and Dale, and that goes great
- 40:37Ryan: The, scene, I'm sorry, that, that's the scene that got
- 40:40me 'cause I was just watching.
- 40:42They're like, "Here, put them out," and they throw the
- 40:44moonshine on him, and I'm just
- 40:45Jon: Uh-huh.
- 40:46No, not that.
- 40:49Kearns: And then
- 40:50Jon: I'm aller- I'm allergic
- 40:51Kearns: of, the
- 40:51Jon: to chamomile.
- 40:53Kearns: the stack of all of the gas and kerosene
- 40:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:00Ryan: the cigarette, I'm like, "There's gotta be gas cans there,"
- 41:02and they show the gas cans.
- 41:03I'm like, "Oh, have that last puff. There you go"
- 41:08Kearns: Wild stuff
- 41:10Jon: I mean, there's really from the start no suspense.
- 41:13They, you know, they sort of start the movie at the end, you
- 41:17know, with Chad and the reporters.
- 41:20So you know or you should know where this is going, that it's
- 41:27really not Tucker and Dale that are the villains, although really Chad
- 41:31hasn't taken anybody out either.
- 41:34Chad is just… I think that
- 41:38Kearns: wuss
- 41:38Jon: w- y- yeah, that's, I think that's kinda Chad's plan, and you
- 41:42find out that Chad's mom is the lone survivor of the Memorial Day massacre
- 41:48Ryan: Mm-hmm
- 41:49Kearns: That's the closest thing to a twist this movie does.
- 41:52Jon: Yeah
- 41:53Kearns: that spot of the Memorial Day massacre and everything
- 41:56is completely unnecessary and
- 41:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:58Kearns: to the film too,
- 41:59Jon: Yep.
- 41:59Kearns: there.
- 42:00Jon: Yep.
- 42:00Kearns: doesn't take away from it, but
- 42:02Jon: No, no.
- 42:03Kearns: And
- 42:04Jon: It,
- 42:05Kearns: how
- 42:05Jon: yeah.
- 42:06Kearns: out of this, right?
- 42:07Jon: Well, yeah, every step in the paranoia about Tucker and Dale with
- 42:12the college kids is fed by Chad because Chad has this preexisting
- 42:19rage towards hillbillies because they killed his mom and they're the reason
- 42:23why his dad never returned, like went missing until you realize that…
- 42:31And that picture is amazing because it's go- just Chad with like a big
- 42:35Amish beard and you realize that, oh, Chad's dad was one of the murderous
- 42:43hillbillies and like Chad trying to reckon with that is pretty funny too.
- 42:51"I'm not a hillbilly," you know?
- 42:54Ryan: I'm not one But
- 42:56Kearns: Okay, well let's see what
- 42:57Ryan: into his madness
- 43:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:00Oh yeah, like Chad just completely falls apart
- 43:05Kearns: Well, he can't rationalize the fact that Allison won't be with him.
- 43:08Like, he's the
- 43:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:10Kearns: silver spoon kid.
- 43:11Jon: Yep.
- 43:12Yep.
- 43:12quintessential college bro, you know, the, shirt with the collar
- 43:17and that big thick white belt
- 43:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 43:23He's awful.
- 43:24He's perfect, the perfect guy to hate.
- 43:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:27Kearns: why don't we find out what some people think about this movie?
- 43:30'Cause it's about that time
- 43:31Jon: It is about that time, and it's, it's really… This was the hardest
- 43:36search for one stars that I had.
- 43:39Ryan: Good.
- 43:40Kearns: Riri
- 43:41Ryan: good for the, the hard part, but good because people realize it's a good
- 43:44Jon: Yeah, I mean, I mean, there were a couple of one stars that, you know, are
- 43:47basically just, like, bad movie, you know?
- 43:50Like, but those are no fun to do.
- 43:52so this currently on Rotten Tomatoes has an 86% critic
- 43:56score and an 85% audience score.
- 43:59Ryan: That's
- 44:00Jon: So people, people mostly like Tucker & Dale.
- 44:03Um, here's a five star: "I don't tend to be one for gory movies, but somehow this
- 44:11movie manages to get away with it due to the fact that it pushes the envelope
- 44:16on just how funny a movie can be while hardly relying on the gore for humor.
- 44:23It's a hilarious commentary on how preconceived notions and
- 44:27misunderstandings can cause unwanted and unnecessary outcomes, and also
- 44:33how a manipulative mind can take advantage of these flaws in others."
- 44:41Kearns: Okay.
- 44:41Jon: And that, you,
- 44:43Kearns: Chad
- 44:44Jon: that's a lot of thought put into Tucker & Dale, but it's,
- 44:47you know, you get, you get to the heart of what this movie is.
- 44:50Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 44:52Jon: and then we have a one star, and this is from 2018.
- 44:56This is how far back I had to go to find reasonable one-star reviews.
- 45:02Uh, one star.
- 45:04"I guess I should say this review contains spoilers even though
- 45:08there is not much to spoil.
- 45:10This is just a boring one-joke movie.
- 45:14It's pretty much an SNL skit stretched out to feature length.
- 45:19Idiotic teens mistake a couple of stereotypical crackers for killers,
- 45:24attack them, but only one managed to kill themselves in the process.
- 45:30Multiple times.
- 45:32End credits.
- 45:33There's really not much more to the story.
- 45:35It's a waste of time and talent."
- 45:39Ryan: They need to watch It's Pat if they wanna see a SNL
- 45:43skit turn into a feature movie
- 45:45Jon: I mean, I, I, I get some of that.
- 45:50It, it, like it's… But they're not trying to do more than what they did.
- 45:55Like they're not, it's not trying to make great statements on anything.
- 45:59It's not trying to be like the great horror movie.
- 46:02It's a fun movie, and if you, if you can't sit and watch Tucker and
- 46:05Dale and have fun, you're probably just as bad as our half-star review.
- 46:11And I don't think this guy likes movies.
- 46:13Just based on his reviews, he is nothing above like a three star.
- 46:18The only, movie I think he liked was, um, uh, Mission Impossible:
- 46:23Dead Reckoning Part One.
- 46:26Ryan: It's not
- 46:26Jon: It's the only, the only thing he liked.
- 46:29So
- 46:30Ryan: better Mission Impossibles too, which is the sad part
- 46:33Jon: No.
- 46:34Half star.
- 46:36I don't know how this movie got such great reviews.
- 46:39They're misleading.
- 46:41It's super predictable and very cliche.
- 46:45Nothing new in this movie that you haven't seen plenty of times.
- 46:49If the comedy doesn't land for you, it's going to be a painful watch, and when you
- 46:54realize that the first 15 minutes of the movie is basically what the entire movie
- 46:59is going to be, it becomes unbearable.
- 47:04Characters are all dumb and annoying, constantly making dumb
- 47:08decisions, and it's not even funny.
- 47:12The humor is nothing new.
- 47:14Pacing sucks, and it drags.
- 47:17I would definitely not recommend this movie.
- 47:19It's pretty dumb
- 47:22Kearns: I mean, it, you can make the argument for dumb, but in a good way,
- 47:26Jon: Yeah.
- 47:27Yeah, and,
- 47:28Ryan: a half star
- 47:29Jon: and like I said, predictable?
- 47:32Sure.
- 47:32They show you the end in the first two minutes of the movie.
- 47:36They show you exactly where this movie's gonna go.
- 47:41Of course it, uh, you know, but unpredictable at the end
- 47:46because you have Allison and Dale bowling together, and Dale giving
- 47:52relationship advice to, to the dude.
- 47:56And then you get to watch in the background while Dale and
- 48:00Allison are having this romantic moment, the chaos that Dale just
- 48:05unleashed with this other guy.
- 48:07Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 48:08Jon: Yeah, I, I love when that happens in movies.
- 48:11Like, that's one of my favorite things about a movie, is when in the
- 48:14foreground you have the scene, and it's what they want y- what you, you
- 48:20know, you're expected to focus on.
- 48:22But in the background, it's just chaos.
- 48:25Kearns: Just bedlam.
- 48:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:27Kearns: I feel
- 48:28Jon: So-
- 48:28Kearns: Nielsen Naked Gun thing they did a lot
- 48:32Jon: Yeah.
- 48:32Mm-hmm.
- 48:34Kearns: like, off a
- 48:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:36Kearns: or something
- 48:36Ryan: When
- 48:37Jon: Yeah.
- 48:37Ryan: the bus
- 48:39Jon: It's definitely one of my favorite things, and it, it's something that
- 48:42really I've, I think takes repeated viewings to catch a lot of the time
- 48:47Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 48:47Ryan: Yeah.
- 48:48'Cause they
- 48:50Jon: 'Cause you do.
- 48:51You, you, yeah, I mean, you get drawn into the foreground and you don't even notice.
- 48:57But anyway, we've heard what other people thought about Tucker & Dale.
- 49:01What do you guys think?
- 49:03Kearns: Now ranking this movie is tricky comparing it to other
- 49:06movies that we have on this list.
- 49:08Like, how do
- 49:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:13Kearns: is a satire and a comedy.
- 49:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:16Kearns: with that in mind, like a 3.75
- 49:20Ryan: Okay
- 49:21Kearns: I give it 3.75.
- 49:23It's an enjoyable movie, so that factors in heavily.
- 49:26Like, it's a good watch from beginning to end.
- 49:28that's not every movie, so
- 49:31Ryan: You, you stole my ranking.
- 49:32I give it a 3.75 as well.
- 49:35I think it just, it hits, like, if you like comedy, it hits that part.
- 49:39You like horror, it's got the gore.
- 49:41But you're, I mean, you're in it for the horror, but you're in it more
- 49:44for the comedy, the whole idea of the trope, the reversal of the characters,
- 49:49the hillbillies who are supposed to be antagonistic being these dudes, and the
- 49:54college kids who are usually the ones who are supposed to be the innocent, you
- 49:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:57Ryan: the ones who are the heroes are the bad guys.
- 50:00It's a nice reversal, and it was, it's refreshing, you know?
- 50:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:04Ryan: And I feel like looking at it and you're going in going, "Oh,
- 50:08I'm gonna watch the next Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Hills
- 50:11Have Eyes." It's not that movie.
- 50:13Just have fun with it.
- 50:14You got Alan Tudyk in there, for God's
- 50:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:17Ryan: How can… It's not gonna be serious
- 50:20Jon: No.
- 50:21No.
- 50:22Um, so I'm gonna end up way above you guys on this one, 'cause this is like…
- 50:27Ryan: A blue star?
- 50:29Jon: no, it's not that far.
- 50:30It's not that far.
- 50:31But this is probably, like, if, if you put this on a blind rank for me and I
- 50:37didn't get this in the, my top four horror comedies, I'd probably be disappointed.
- 50:44Tucker & Dale is way up there for me.
- 50:46This is one of those that if I need to be picked up, I can put on and feel better.
- 50:52Like, everything about it just makes me happy.
- 50:55This is a 4.5 for me.
- 50:57Like, this is like, this is way, way up there for me.
- 51:01And you know, I, I hadn't really thought about it until this watch how much I would
- 51:07like to see this universe be revisited.
- 51:12Because I think there's so… There- You can do more with
- 51:15Tucker and Dale in particular.
- 51:17I don't think you need the… I don't know how much you would need
- 51:20an Allison character back in it.
- 51:22And there, I mean, there have been talks of a sequel, but as of right
- 51:28now, it sounds like it's dead.
- 51:32there was an interview from last year with Eli Craig where, you know, he says
- 51:37that, um, Tucker & Dale 2 has died more times than the teens in the movie did.
- 51:44Um, and most recently, um, I just lost the guy's name, but one of
- 51:49the, the Universal CEO who has been shutting down fully completed movies
- 51:57to take tax write-offs, like Batgirl is in there, a sequel to Scoob!
- 52:01is in there, like, they're completed movies that he has just
- 52:05shelved for, to, to use as tax write-offs, as like, you know, loss.
- 52:11So that, that's where, that's where Tucker & Dale sequels sit now.
- 52:15They're not completed, but they're in that sort of developmental hell that
- 52:21they're not gonna come out of in the foreseeable future, if ever, because
- 52:26this guy runs Universal, and Universal, I guess, controls the rights to it.
- 52:31you know, one of the things that was talked about wasn't
- 52:33a movie, but a TV series where Tucker and Dale are detectives.
- 52:37Ryan: That's
- 52:37Jon: you imagine them trying to solve crimes?
- 52:40That would be the funniest thing ever.
- 52:43Kearns: Yeah, that
- 52:43Jon: g-
- 52:44Kearns: fantastic
- 52:45Jon: you know, it's, it's, it would sort of be like a goofier, um, to go to my
- 52:51favorite Joe Lansdale series, it would be like a Hap and Leonard kind of thing.
- 52:57Kearns: nice.
- 52:58Ryan: Okay
- 52:59Jon: It's, you know, yeah.
- 53:01Oh, oh, bro,
- 53:04Kearns: That'll
- 53:04Jon: you have a, a, if you guy- if our listeners haven't read any of the Hap
- 53:08and Leonard stuff, like, oh my gosh, forget, forget Lansdale's horror, which
- 53:12is top tier impeccable horror writing.
- 53:16His mystery detective writing is just so good.
- 53:21You, like, the way he writes those two characters, you know, Hap being
- 53:27like a, a liberal hippie white Texan dude, and his best friend
- 53:33Leonard is a gay Black conservative.
- 53:37Like, it's just the funniest pairing of guys and the way he writes them like, oh
- 53:42my gosh, go, go and get those books too
- 53:45Kearns: he's a super nice guy.
- 53:46I was in a, um-- I don't know why he gave me the time of day in
- 53:49it, but I was on a Facebook chat, and h- Lansdale was in there.
- 53:53Like, Ellen Datlow and people like that were talking.
- 53:56And I mentioned that I couldn't get a copy of his book.
- 53:59It was like it's being sold used for like $79 on Amazon.
- 54:03And he goes, "Oh, just get in touch with my daughter." Like, he sent
- 54:07me a direct message and said, uh, "Just get in touch with my daughter.
- 54:09She'll sell it to you for whatever for cost." I was like, "Oh, all right." But
- 54:14he, in true Lansdale fashion, he, like, didn't tell me how to get in touch with
- 54:17his daughter or what his daughter's name
- 54:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:19Kearns: like that.
- 54:20Jon: It's,
- 54:21Kearns: buddy."
- 54:22Jon: it's Casey, I think
- 54:23Kearns: guy.
- 54:23Casey Lansdale makes sense.
- 54:25Jon: I think it's Casey.
- 54:27Kearns: down, and then I just lost interest in the book after a while.
- 54:30Jon: Which book?
- 54:30Kearns: it.
- 54:31I don't even remember anymore.
- 54:32It was, like, kind of like a flash in the pan thing at the time.
- 54:36Jon: I, I think a lot,
- 54:37Kearns: things Lansdale at the moment
- 54:38Jon: mm-hmm, a lot of his non-Hap and Leonard stuff is, I think is
- 54:44small publishers, so it goes in and out of print pretty quickly
- 54:48Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 54:48Ryan: Gotcha
- 54:49Kearns: It's hard to get stuff.
- 54:50Um, that's one of the reasons too he's like a cult icon because
- 54:53Jon: Yeah
- 54:54Kearns: you have to kinda like really get out there and scour to
- 54:56get certain prints of manuscripts and things like that that people want
- 55:00Ryan: But that's cool though.
- 55:01That's how you want it.
- 55:02You want it to be
- 55:03Kearns: That's how he wants it.
- 55:04Ryan: You--
- 55:05Jon: Mm-hmm
- 55:05Kearns: Yep.
- 55:05Ryan: you want it to be a
- 55:06Kearns: Well, he-- it's also, it's a hodgepodge of just him
- 55:10clawing his way through his career.
- 55:12Jon: Yeah
- 55:13Kearns: like, it's like Brian Keene too, just the guy's been around forever writing
- 55:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:19Mm-hmm.
- 55:20Yeah, I, I think this is just the way he wants it.
- 55:22I don't think he wants to be a huge mainstream star.
- 55:26Kearns: No,
- 55:26Jon: I think he's happy…
- 55:27Kearns: rich, but he definitely doesn't wanna be
- 55:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:30Yeah, for sure
- 55:32Kearns: Now this is the guy who wrote Bubba Ho-Tep, listeners, by the way.
- 55:35So this
- 55:35Jon: Yeah.
- 55:35Kearns: what we're talking about.
- 55:36This
- 55:37Jon: Yeah
- 55:37Kearns: guy, and we did that movie
- 55:39Jon: Yep.
- 55:40Ryan: episode
- 55:41Jon: Godzilla's 12-step program, have you read that?
- 55:44Oh my
- 55:45Kearns: I am not.
- 55:46Godzilla.
- 55:47Jon: amazing.
- 55:47Kearns: down here a
- 55:48Jon: Godzilla's in like, he's in like a recovery group for destroying cities.
- 55:53Kearns: That's amazing.
- 55:54Jon: It's, he, he's got like a nine to five and stuff.
- 55:57Like it's, it's so funny.
- 55:58It's so bizarre.
- 56:00Like, but that's, that's what Lansdale is.
- 56:02Like at his best he's like bizarre and funny, and he can be scary and riveting.
- 56:08Like, he does all those things in just this like sort of weird fashion
- 56:15Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 56:16Agreed.
- 56:18All right, guys.
- 56:20I think it's about time to wrap up Tucker & Dale.
- 56:22We ready to do some top fives, gentlemen?
- 56:25Ryan: Top
- 56:25Jon: we are
- 56:26Ryan: Oh man,
- 56:27Kearns: All right
- 56:28Ryan: Oh man, we're taking a trip on my top fives.
- 56:30We're gonna do horror in the boonies, and we're gonna start off with number
- 56:33five, and that is 2001 Maniacs from 2005.
- 56:39It is a remake of a 1964 film, about a group of college kids
- 56:44who get detoured to a peaceful Southern town in Pleasant Valley.
- 56:49And let's just say these Southerners are not as friendly as we get to learn out.
- 56:56They are ghosts of a former Confederate town still fighting
- 57:01the good war in the Civil.
- 57:03But, you know, check out the
- 57:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:06Ryan: It's fun.
- 57:07It's a B movie slasher.
- 57:09Just enjoy it.
- 57:10And that leads to my number four, Silent House.
- 57:14I don't know if Have you seen Silent House?
- 57:18Jon: Not sure.
- 57:19Ryan: 2011, uh, psychological horror film starring Elizabeth Olsen, focuses
- 57:23on a young woman who is terrorized in her family vacation home while cleaning
- 57:27the property with her father and uncle.
- 57:29There's a lot of twists and turns.
- 57:31I saw this actually in theaters, and,
- 57:33Jon: Hmm.
- 57:34Ryan: the theater experience, I mean, as a college student, I was like, "Okay, this
- 57:40isn't… It's okay." But as I re-watch it later on, it's a pretty deep psychological
- 57:46film with a good twist and turn in it.
- 57:48I don't wanna give
- 57:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:49Ryan: much away, but it's very, um… It's like a good mix of fast pace and slow
- 57:55pace with the dark shadows and the lights of the house, which is pretty unique.
- 58:00And that gets to number three.
- 58:02we know someone who loves this film, and that's Wrong Turn.
- 58:05I mean, Wrong Turn, y- you know, Desmond Harrington, Eli- Eliza Dushku.
- 58:12Turn kinda, like, nails the whole boonie expertise of 2003, and
- 58:17it's just… It's a cult film.
- 58:19It's a great B movie.
- 58:21follows a group of six individuals being stalked by deformed, inbred,
- 58:24cannibalistic mountain men in the woods of West Virginia.
- 58:27And make a wrong turn, guys.
- 58:31Never in the boonies, never in the city.
- 58:35But if you always find a last house on the left, you should always
- 58:39visit it, and that's number two.
- 58:40And I'm going with the original Wes Craven version.
- 58:44Picked that up at a Walmart for five bucks.
- 58:46It was worth it.
- 58:47Uh, the whole idea follows Mari, who is and things happen to her,
- 58:56the fugitives kinda, like, leave her in a river, and found by her
- 59:00parents, who take bloody revenge.
- 59:02And the original one done by Wes Craven, again, his first film.
- 59:06It hits everything that you'd want from a Wes Craven film, and it's
- 59:10a good start for his long career.
- 59:12Which leads to number one, the original boonie feature I feel, uh, that kinda took
- 59:18it to a step higher, and that's Evil Dead.
- 59:21Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 59:22Ryan: I can't r- you know, I can explain it as much.
- 59:24We all know the story.
- 59:26You know, four members, they through a demonic depression
- 59:29after reading the Necronomicon, and Ash Williams saves the day.
- 59:34And just to give it a little bit of a nod, on July 10th,
- 59:38we're gonna get Evil Dead burn.
- 59:41Around that time we're gonna be covering Evil Dead Rise, which is excellent.
- 59:45So if you haven't seen Evil Dead Rise yet, watch it before watching the podcast,
- 59:49or watch the podcast and watch the film.
- 59:51But that's my top five of horror movies in the boonies.
- 59:54Hills Have Eyes was on there, but I feel like that's more in the desert.
- 59:58It's not really boonies,
- 1:00:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:01Ryan: you know?
- 1:00:02Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:04Yeah, I'll give you that one.
- 1:00:06I wouldn't… Yeah
- 1:00:07Ryan: I was thinking about it, but I was like, "Eh, I, I can't make…" You
- 1:00:11know, when I think of boonie, something, you know, of like the woods and,
- 1:00:15Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:17Yeah.
- 1:00:19Ryan: But what
- 1:00:19Jon: Not The Wastelands.
- 1:00:21Oh, my,
- 1:00:22Ryan: Did you
- 1:00:22Jon: top five.
- 1:00:23Ryan: Did you do the
- 1:00:24Jon: No.
- 1:00:25Ryan: No?
- 1:00:26Jon: No, I couldn't, but I wanted
- 1:00:30I wanted to do top five wood chippers so bad, but I just
- 1:00:34couldn't come up with five of them.
- 1:00:35It w- it was a s- it was a struggle.
- 1:00:37Ryan: We
- 1:00:38Jon: So
- 1:00:38Ryan: some.
- 1:00:39Come on
- 1:00:39Jon: yeah,
- 1:00:40Ryan: were
- 1:00:40Jon: yeah.
- 1:00:41But like there is like, I think there's a movie called Wood Chipper
- 1:00:45Massacre that I haven't seen, so I, I d- I like to generally, like
- 1:00:49my top fives are movies I've seen.
- 1:00:51I don't, I don't wanna like, I don't wanna recommend stuff just based on
- 1:00:55like other people's recommendations.
- 1:00:57So I instead went with five underrated, underseen horror comedies.
- 1:01:04Ryan: Ooh
- 1:01:04Jon: I'm gonna start with an honorable mention, which was originally my
- 1:01:07number one, but I, I s- I've started to feel like it's at least properly
- 1:01:12rated now, and that's Idle Hands.
- 1:01:15I know for a while people had forgotten about Idle Hands and how good that
- 1:01:19one is and how fun that one is.
- 1:01:21But I think it's, it got a nice shout release.
- 1:01:23It's, it's come back into consciousness.
- 1:01:26I think it's due a… Like I think it's properly rated now.
- 1:01:29But my number five is definitely underrated.
- 1:01:32my number five also used to be one of my like movie friend group initiation movies.
- 1:01:38Like if you could sit through this movie, we can hang.
- 1:01:42it's a movie I blind bought at a convention from one of
- 1:01:45the actors, Wayne Johnson.
- 1:01:47He was just at Monster Mania one time, and like he, when he meets you, he acts like
- 1:01:51he's known you forever, to the point where I like, I was like, "Do I know this guy?
- 1:01:57I feel like I know you.
- 1:01:58Why do I… Like, you're talking to me like we've met 100 times." And this,
- 1:02:02the movie is called Night of Something Strange, and it is a tough watch.
- 1:02:07It's funny.
- 1:02:08It's a tough watch because it is gory, it is gross.
- 1:02:11so if a killer STD and zombies sound like a good time, then
- 1:02:18this is the movie for you.
- 1:02:20Um, sp- spring break is derailed for a group of young people when one of
- 1:02:24them contracts an STD in a bathroom.
- 1:02:27those with the STD turn into hungry zombie-like creatures infecting others
- 1:02:32in more and more outrageous fashions.
- 1:02:36It's a wild ride.
- 1:02:37Like they, this and a movie called Miami Connection are like,
- 1:02:42have, have always been my movie initiations for f- for friends.
- 1:02:47And you guys are, you guys have dodged both, so there's a day coming
- 1:02:50where you guys are gonna get these.
- 1:02:52Y- I may not even tell you
- 1:02:54Kearns: Nice.
- 1:02:54Ryan: We'll just show up one day.
- 1:02:56Miami
- 1:02:56Kearns: Yeah, I'll
- 1:02:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:00My- Miami Connection is a mu- much different experience.
- 1:03:03Um, we'll talk about that another time.
- 1:03:05Kearns: I think gave me Miami Connection.
- 1:03:07I recognize the cover.
- 1:03:10Jon: I love Miami Connection.
- 1:03:11My number four, we're gonna visit, uh, the Broken Lizard group, and it's Club Dread.
- 1:03:18Ryan: Yes,
- 1:03:18Jon: Yes.
- 1:03:19Ryan: You don't
- 1:03:20Jon: I th- I
- 1:03:21Ryan: Brent
- 1:03:21Jon: It, it get, it, it gets sort of, sort of blotted out by
- 1:03:26the Super Troopers movies, which is getting a third this summer.
- 1:03:29Um, so Broken Lizard is known more for the Super Trooper movies.
- 1:03:35but in Club Dread they took on the horror comedy with what I
- 1:03:38think is really hilarious results.
- 1:03:40the fun in the sun at Coconut Pete's Resort is interrupted by a serial
- 1:03:45killer preying on the guests and staff.
- 1:03:48you get Bill Paxton doing his best Jimmy Buffett impersonation as Coconut Pete.
- 1:03:54You get, like, the whole Broken Lizard team and a bunch of, you
- 1:03:57know, Brittany Murphy's in there.
- 1:03:59Uh, there's a couple other people that pop up that you're like, "Oh,
- 1:04:02I know who that is." It's a lot.
- 1:04:05I love Club Dread.
- 1:04:06It's so much fun.
- 1:04:07I think, I think we're in the minority on that, Ryan, 'cause
- 1:04:10I know Allison doesn't like it.
- 1:04:12Kearns is not a fan.
- 1:04:13I love Club Dread
- 1:04:14Ryan: to see Kevin Heffernan in dreads, it's great.
- 1:04:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:19Kearns: A lot of
- 1:04:19Ryan: Farva
- 1:04:20Kearns: around in my seat in the theater in Club Dread.
- 1:04:22A, a dude slapped his friend at the end of that movie
- 1:04:26Ryan: Because they are that
- 1:04:26Kearns: when in the theater, 'cause they were that angry.
- 1:04:28Yeah, it was a college.
- 1:04:29We were at the theater, and stood up.
- 1:04:31Everybody's leaving.
- 1:04:32He's like, "Dude, no." He's like, "It's supposed to be good." And
- 1:04:34then he, he just slapped him.
- 1:04:37It's like, "Oh my God, this guy's mad." That was the same theater
- 1:04:41where the Mystic River, um, Scary Movie 3 thing happened, by the way
- 1:04:45Jon: do you guys wanna make that our thing?
- 1:04:47If one of us recommends a movie that turns out being bad, they get slapped
- 1:04:52Kearns: I mean, maybe.
- 1:04:54It's just so easy to
- 1:04:55Jon: I feel like,
- 1:04:56Kearns: that with
- 1:04:56Jon: I feel like I'm g- I feel like I'm gonna get slapped a lot
- 1:04:59though, 'cause I'm d- I do a lot of the recommending around here
- 1:05:02Kearns: my
- 1:05:04Ryan: I like,
- 1:05:04Kearns: jawn up.
- 1:05:05Pew.
- 1:05:06Yeah, I haven't disliked a single one yet
- 1:05:09Ryan: only, the only one that I feel like, well, it wasn't really a
- 1:05:12recommendation, it was just on the list, was Fright Night 2, the remake
- 1:05:16Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:16I mean, we had to though.
- 1:05:18We had to.
- 1:05:18Ryan: Yeah, I mean, it wasn't your recommendation, it was
- 1:05:20just on the list, but everything
- 1:05:21Jon: Yeah
- 1:05:22Ryan: has been a hit
- 1:05:24Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:25So we're now fully into the zombie portion of my top five because
- 1:05:29how can I make a list of anything without a, a zombie portion?
- 1:05:33Number three is a movie called Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
- 1:05:38Kearns: Hope
- 1:05:39Jon: Um, so when a zombie is inadvertently released from a lab,
- 1:05:43three teen Boy Scouts, two of whom would rather go to a party than be Boy
- 1:05:48Scouts anymore, are tasked with saving the town along with some classmates
- 1:05:55and the bartender from a strip club.
- 1:05:58And it- this gets wild.
- 1:06:00Some of the, zombie fights with, you know, adult toys and other things
- 1:06:05are just… It's just bonkers.
- 1:06:08I love it so much.
- 1:06:09It's another one of those you can put it on when you're feeling kinda down
- 1:06:12and just laugh and have a good time.
- 1:06:15Uh, as is my number two, which is also zombies.
- 1:06:19it's a movie called Cooties.
- 1:06:22Uh, this one has Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, and, uh, Leigh
- 1:06:27Whannell, who also, wrote it.
- 1:06:30so in Cooties, a cafeteria food-based zombie virus breaks out in an
- 1:06:35elementary school, turning the students into flesh-hungry zombies.
- 1:06:41the misfit group of teachers are forced to defend themselves and
- 1:06:45attempt to escape from the starving students and, uh, it just goes wild.
- 1:06:50And like, I mean, if you find fights with kids to be particularly
- 1:06:56amusing like I do, this is for you.
- 1:06:59Like
- 1:07:00Kearns: horde of hungry elementary schoolers.
- 1:07:01This is teacher revenge porn.
- 1:07:04Jon: Yeah, it is.

- 1:07:32When zombies rise in Cuba, the government and media organizations
- 1:07:37blame dissidents revolting against the communist government, but Juan
- 1:07:42and his slacker friends know better.
- 1:07:46Juan decides to profit from the crisis and opens a zombie removal service.
- 1:07:51but quickly he and his friends realize the situation is out of hand, and
- 1:07:56now they have to escape from Cuba in the most Cuban fashion possible
