- 0:00Chapter 18 from the book of Isaiah.
- 0:03Dear God please help us as we read through this chapter and
- 0:07give us wisdom and insight to understand what is written here.
- 0:12We ask for this in Jesus name. Chapter 18.
- 0:17Woe to the land of warring wings along the rivers of Cush, which
- 0:24sends envoys by sea and papyrus boats over the water.
- 0:29Go swift messengers to a people tall and smooth skinned, to a
- 0:33people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of strange
- 0:37speech whose land is divided by rivers.
- 0:40All you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a
- 0:44banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and
- 0:48when a trumpet sounds, you will hear it.
- 0:51This is what the Lord says to me.
- 0:53I will remain quiet and will look on from my dwelling place
- 0:58like shimmering heat in the sunshine, like a dew, like a
- 1:01cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
- 1:05For before the harvest, when the blossom is gone and the flower
- 1:10becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the shoots with
- 1:13pruning knives and cut down and take away the spreading
- 1:17branches. They they will all be left to
- 1:22the mountain birds of prey and to the wild animals.
- 1:26The birds will feed on them all summer, the wild animals all
- 1:30winter. At that time gifts will be
- 1:33brought to the Lord Almighty from a people tall and smooth
- 1:37skinned, from a people feared far and wide, an aggressive
- 1:42nation of strange speech whose land is divided by rivers.
- 1:47The gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the
- 1:51name of the Lord Almighty. And this is the end of chapter
- 1:5618. So I think this has a lot of
- 2:00future implications. First I will read what the Study
- 2:04Bible has to say and then I will get into things that I noticed
- 2:08when I read this. So what was the land of
- 2:10worrying? Wearing wings along with the
- 2:14rivers of Cush? Cush was a region just outside
- 2:18or just South of Egypt, now Sudan.
- 2:22It was also known as in ancient times as Nubia or Ethiopia, but
- 2:29not to be confused with modern Ethiopia which is which is
- 2:32located farther to the southeast.
- 2:35Worrying Wings is either a reference to insects for which
- 2:40the Nile Valley was renowned, or a figurative description of the
- 2:45armies of Cush. Chapters 18 through 20 deal with
- 2:50Egypt and Cush, which were at one at this time.
- 2:55Who were these tall and smooth skinned people?
- 2:58The people of Cush. Unlike the Israelites and
- 3:00Canaanites, the men of Cush in Egypt were normally smooth
- 3:05shaved. Even Greeks like Herodotus
- 3:08shared the general admiration felt in antiquity for the tall,
- 3:13handsome, clean shaven Nubians of Cush.
- 3:17Why would God remain quiet and look on from this his dwelling
- 3:21place? Isaiah often urged his
- 3:24contemporaries to adopt an attitude of quiet faith in their
- 3:27God instead of trusting in alliances with other powers.
- 3:32Here God himself was quiet, contemplating the frenzied scene
- 3:37of diplomatic and military activity.
- 3:39When Isaiah commended quiet trust, therefore, he was really
- 3:43calling his hearers to view things from a divine viewpoint.
- 3:48When will these gifts be brought to the Lord Almighty?
- 3:51Verse 7 looks beyond the impending defeat of the armies
- 3:54of Cush and Egypt by the Assyrians.
- 3:57Ultimately, Isaiah was reminding his readers that God intended
- 4:01for even an aggressive nation like Cush to worship the Lord
- 4:05Almighty, bringing their offerings to Jesus, bringing
- 4:08their offerings to Jerusalem. The very people who from their
- 4:14position of strength had sent word to Judah to secure her
- 4:19cooperation in a military venture would come again with
- 4:22gifts for the true God. God's final purposes in history
- 4:26involve people from all nations. So I will go through now what
- 4:32the things that I noticed when I read this.
- 4:35So first of all, it in verse 2 it says ghost swift messengers.
- 4:43And I was curious about who are these messengers that are going
- 4:47to these people and it turns out that it's the word MALAK malak,
- 4:54which are angels. So ghost swift angels to these
- 4:58people who are feared far and wide.
- 5:02And then I really believe again, this does talk about future
- 5:06because it says in here, all you people of the world, you who
- 5:12live on earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you
- 5:17will see it. And when a trumpet sounds, you
- 5:20will hear it. Well, what does that really
- 5:22sound like? That sounds like when Jesus
- 5:25returns, every eye will see and there's a trumpet that'll be
- 5:29sounded. So this definitely sounds like
- 5:34the return of Jesus, that everyone will hear this.
- 5:38And I thought I had looked up the trumpets, but trumpets,
- 5:43that's an interesting thing. I think that I did look up
- 5:45trumpets, but it was there were so many verses that talked about
- 5:49trumpets that it would probably be too much to read on this
- 5:53podcast. But if you want to do a word
- 5:56search in like blueletterbible.org, search
- 6:01trumpet and see how many references come up because the
- 6:05trumpets were used for an assembly, also a warning.
- 6:11So those were the 2 common ways that this was used.
- 6:14And so when Jesus returns, we know that he comes on the clouds
- 6:19and the sound of a trumpet will be heard.
- 6:22And so this really sounds like the return of Jesus.
- 6:26And it says, all you people of the world, you who live on the
- 6:29earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see
- 6:32it. When a trumpet sounds, you will
- 6:35hear it. So then it says I will remain
- 6:41quiet and look on for my dwelling place.
- 6:44This is the Lord saying like shimmering heat in the sunshine,
- 6:47like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
- 6:50Well, a lot of times when I mean the harvest is related to the
- 6:56return of Jesus. So it says for before the
- 7:00harvest, when the blossom is gone and the flower becomes a
- 7:04ripening grate, he will cut off the shoots with pruning knives
- 7:09and cut down and take away the spreading branches.
- 7:13So this brought to mind Revelation chapter 14, verse 14.
- 7:19And so it's this is the verse I looked and there before me was a
- 7:24white cloud. And seated on the cloud was one
- 7:28like the Son of man with a gold, with a crown of gold on his head
- 7:33and a sharp sickle in his hand. Now I'll continue reading.
- 7:38So then another Angel came out of the temple and called in a
- 7:43loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, Take your
- 7:47sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the
- 7:52harvest of the earth is ripe. So Jesus is sitting on a cloud.
- 7:58He has a crown, and he's got a sickle in his hand.
- 8:01And another Angel came out of the temple in a loud voice
- 8:04called and says, take your sickle and reap because it's
- 8:08time. So he who was seated on the
- 8:11cloud swung his sickle over the earth and the earth was
- 8:15harvested. So Jesus harvest, he swings his
- 8:19sickle over the earth and the earth was harvested.
- 8:22Now then there's another Angel. Another Angel came out of the
- 8:26temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle, and still
- 8:30another Angel. So this is the third Angel who
- 8:32had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a
- 8:36loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle.
- 8:41Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes
- 8:45from the earth's vine, from the earth's spine, because its
- 8:49grapes are ripe. Now, this is the second time
- 8:53that it was harvested. So it was harvested by one who
- 8:55was sitting on the cloud. The earth was harvested, but
- 8:58then there's this other one, this secondary harvest.
- 9:03And then listen to what happens to these.
- 9:05The Angel swung his The Angel swung his sickle on the earth,
- 9:09gathered its grapes, and threw them into the great winepress of
- 9:14God's wrath. They were trampled in the wine
- 9:17press outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press,
- 9:20rising as high as the horse's bridles for a distance of 1600
- 9:25stadia. So he who was seated on the
- 9:28cloud, seated on the cloud, swung a circle over the earth,
- 9:32and the earth was harvested. That's Jesus.
- 9:34Remember, he comes on a cloud with the sound of the trumpet.
- 9:37But then there's an Angel who comes and gathers the grapes and
- 9:41throws them into the great wine press.
- 9:44So to me this is what it says. For before the harvest, when the
- 9:48blossom is gone and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he
- 9:52will cut off the shoots with pruning knives and cut down and
- 9:55take away the spreading branches.
- 9:58Then it says they will, they will all be left to the mountain
- 10:03birds of prey and to the wild animals.
- 10:07The birds will feed on them all summer, the wild animals all
- 10:11winter. So this reminded me of
- 10:13Revelation chapter 19, verse 17, it says.
- 10:19And I saw an Angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud
- 10:23voice to all the birds flying in mid air.
- 10:26Come, gather together for the great supper of God, so that you
- 10:32may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty of
- 10:36horses, and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free
- 10:39and slave, great and small. Then I saw the beast in the
- 10:43kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to wage
- 10:46war against the rider on the horse in his army.
- 10:49But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who
- 10:52had performed the signs on its Behan behalf.
- 10:55With the signs he had deluded those who had received the mark
- 10:58of the beast and worshipped its image.
- 11:01The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of
- 11:04burning sulfur. The rest were killed with the
- 11:07sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse and all
- 11:10the birds gorged themselves on his flesh.
- 11:14So this is, you know, because a lot of times these prophecies,
- 11:21they go, they, there's a whole lot of time that passes in
- 11:23between these. So these are not like
- 11:26simultaneous things that happen, but rather different events that
- 11:32will happen because then right after that it talks about people
- 11:36bringing gifts. At that time, gifts will be
- 11:38brought to the Lord Almighty. So how do you go from, you know,
- 11:42a harvesting and treading on the wine press to all of a sudden
- 11:47now gifts are being brought to the Lord?
- 11:48So there's these, these stages, they aren't just like all
- 11:51happening at one time. So at the at the time gifts will
- 11:55be brought to the Lord from my people, tall and smooth skin
- 11:58from my people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of
- 12:01strange speech whose land is divided by rivers.
- 12:05The gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the
- 12:09name of the Lord Almighty. So when are people going to be
- 12:13bringing gifts to the Lord Almighty?
- 12:18I believe it's probably going to be the Feast of Tabernacles
- 12:21because in Bible prophecy and other prophetic books, it says
- 12:26that people will continue to come to Zion or Jerusalem to
- 12:33celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
- 12:35So in the new King James Version, it talks about, let's
- 12:43see the first, there's several different verses to read here,
- 12:48but Deuteronomy 13 or 16, verse 13, you shall observe the Feast
- 12:56of Tabernacles, 7 days when you have gathered from your
- 13:01threshing floor and from your wine press.
- 13:05So a lot of these things, these original traditions were
- 13:10symbolic of future events. So then it says in Deuteronomy
- 13:151616, three times a year all your males shall appear before
- 13:20the Lord your God in the place which He chooses at the Feast of
- 13:25Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of
- 13:30Tabernacles. And they shall not appear before
- 13:34the Lord empty handed. So they are bringing gifts at
- 13:37that time. So then also in Second
- 13:41Chronicles 813, according to this daily rate offering,
- 13:47according to the commandment of Moses for the Sabbath, the new
- 13:51moons, and three appointed yearly feast, the Feast of
- 13:55Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of
- 13:59Tabernacles. And then in Zechariah chapter
- 14:0414, verse 16. And it shall come to pass that
- 14:07everyone who is left of all the nations which came against
- 14:11Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the king, the
- 14:17Lord of hosts, and to keep the feasts of Tabernacles.
- 14:22That one I think definitely is about the future time.
- 14:26So because they're going up to worship the king, the Lord of
- 14:29hosts, and then it says additionally from Zechariah
- 14:35chapter 14, if the family of Egypt will not come up and enter
- 14:39in, they shall have no rain. They shall receive the plague
- 14:43with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to
- 14:47keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of
- 14:51Egypt and the punishment of all nations that do not come up to
- 14:55keep the Feast of Tabernacles. I believe that's referring to
- 14:59rain though on well yeah, they shall have no reign.
- 15:03So those are all the things and because of those I believe that
- 15:08this is actually a future prophecy against Sudan today are
- 15:15Kush is called in the Bible.
