- 0:00Welcome to this edition of Psychology Explained by
- 0:04Dr. Curtis Peterson, who is trying to bring psychology alive
- 0:08for us all. We're gonna go over the 3 types
- 0:12of clinical group processes, one starting
- 0:17with psychoeducational support.
- 0:20This group is commonly given when a
- 0:24person is either newly diagnosed with a disorder
- 0:28or or is coming in, as I said,
- 0:32with trauma recovery.
- 0:35It's commonly used with survivors or individuals
- 0:39going through treatment for a cancer
- 0:44or bereavement of that type.
- 0:49And then the second one is the actual treatment group.
- 0:54This is where we're treating specific symptoms relapse
- 1:00prevention,
- 1:02or trauma that a person is going through.
- 1:06And then the process group, which is that group that is meant
- 1:10for individuals who have gone through the treatment, gone through
- 1:14the psychoeducational, and now they're gonna
- 1:17process those deep-seated emotional,
- 1:21psychological issues they've gone through.
- 1:26The way this is going to be presented is in
- 1:30the perfect world. In the perfect
- 1:33world, someone goes through psychoeducational groups,
- 1:37that support system, and then they go through treatment
- 1:42managing symptoms,
- 1:45and then they go through the process group where they
- 1:49deeply process what they've gone through.
- 1:52I want to keep everyone in mind,
- 1:56and I'm not denying this in any way, that in
- 2:00reality these things can happen in congruency.
- 2:03So I'm going to use the inpatient
- 2:08treatment for substance use to kind of explain this.
- 2:13An insurance company may pay for 2 weeks,
- 2:16they may pay for the complete 30 days of
- 2:20inpatient treatment. It's very inconsistent between
- 2:25insurances. So this forces inpatient
- 2:30treatment facilities to combine this
- 2:34process. So someone may be going through a
- 2:38psychoeducational about substance abuse,
- 2:42they also may be in a treatment group,
- 2:46doing relapse prevention, those kinds of things.
- 2:50But they also may be doing a process group at the same
- 2:54time. And even on the outpatient
- 2:58level, we can kind of see this. But what
- 3:02I want to present here,
- 3:06because this is the place
- 3:10to talk about these things, is what would be best practice.
- 3:15Best practice is psychoeducational treatment
- 3:20and then process. Okay,
- 3:24so I just want to kind of delineate these
- 3:282 models. One is based in reality,
- 3:32the other one is the ideal sequential progression.
- 3:39Okay, and so with that in mind, let me go
- 3:43up here again.
- 3:47Thank you for joining us for this Psychology Explained.
- 3:51I hope you'll join us in later episodes where we can— we'll continue
- 3:55to investigate the human mind and psychology.
