- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. And you have tapped on play and
- 0:18you and I are going to continue our adventure of reading another
- 0:22book of God's Word today. Not a whole book cracking.
- 0:26Who's got time for that today? No, another chapter of God's
- 0:29Word. We are going to keep on reading
- 0:31through the book of Acts and this is an awesome chapter.
- 0:34This is like a huge juxtaposition as we think about
- 0:39the the disciple Peter and we think of him so bullish, so you
- 0:45know, ready to jump the gun, shoot from the hip.
- 0:48But when all the chips were down and Jesus is being arrested, he
- 0:51just flees and denies Jesus to his great shame.
- 0:56But here we see that his courage is restored and the Holy Spirit
- 1:01brings this to him. So if you ever feel like, no, I
- 1:04just don't have enough courage to do the stuff that God wants
- 1:06me to do. Holy moly, that is me.
- 1:09I think I just, I cannot step into the space that God is
- 1:13calling me. I just don't have what I need.
- 1:17Take heart, friends, because it's not our courage, but it's
- 1:20the Holy Spirit in us that can give us the courage that we
- 1:24need. This is very good timing for me
- 1:27to hear this message, and I hope for you too.
- 1:29So let us hear about Peter in the thick of it again, but this
- 1:33time with God's Spirit bubbling over inside of him, giving him
- 1:36such courage to speak truth even to ears that don't want to hear
- 1:41it as we read together. Acts Chapter 4.
- 1:53While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they
- 1:59were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple Guard,
- 2:02and some of the Sadjussies. These leaders were very
- 2:06disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that
- 2:09through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead that
- 2:13arrested them, and since it was already evening, put them in
- 2:16jail until morning. But many of the people who heard
- 2:19their message believed it so the number of men who believed now
- 2:23totaled about 5000. The next day the council of all
- 2:28the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in
- 2:32Jerusalem. Anas, the high priest was there,
- 2:35along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander and other relatives of
- 2:40the high priest. They brought in the two
- 2:42disciples and demanded by what power or in whose name have you
- 2:47done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy
- 2:51Spirit, said to them rulers and elders of our people, Are we
- 2:57being questioned today because we've done a good deed for a
- 2:59crippled man? Do you want to know how he was
- 3:03healed? Let me clearly state to all of
- 3:06you, and to all the people of Israel, that he was healed by
- 3:11the powerful name of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, the man
- 3:15you crucified, but whom God has raised from the dead.
- 3:20For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says
- 3:25the stone that you build is rejected, has now become the
- 3:29cornerstone. There is salvation in no one
- 3:33else. God has given no other name
- 3:36under heaven by which we must be saved.
- 3:40The members of the council were amazed when they saw the
- 3:43boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were
- 3:46ordinary men with no special training in the Scripture.
- 3:50They also recognized them as the men who had been with Jesus.
- 3:54But since they could see the man who had been healed standing
- 3:57right there among them, there was nothing the council could
- 4:01say. So they ordered Peter and John
- 4:03out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves What
- 4:09should we do with these men? They asked each other.
- 4:12We can't deny that they have performed A miraculous sign, and
- 4:16everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.
- 4:19But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we
- 4:23must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus name again.
- 4:28So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never
- 4:31again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
- 4:35But Peter and John replied, Do you think God wants us to obey
- 4:40you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about
- 4:44everything we have seen and heard.
- 4:47The council then threatened them further, but they finally let
- 4:50them go because they didn't know how to punish them without
- 4:53starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
- 4:57for this miraculous sign, the healing of a man who had been
- 5:00lame for more than 40 years. As soon as they were freed,
- 5:06Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them
- 5:10what the leading priests and elders had said when they heard
- 5:13the report. All the believers lifted their
- 5:16voices together in prayer to God, oh sovereign Lord, creator
- 5:21of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them.
- 5:26You spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit, through our ancestor
- 5:30David, your servant, saying, why were the nations so angry?
- 5:36Why did they waste their time with futile plans?
- 5:39The kings of the earth prepared for battle.
- 5:42The rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his
- 5:45Messiah. In fact, this has happened here
- 5:49in this very city, For Herod, Antipas, Pontius Pilate, the
- 5:54Governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united
- 5:59against Jesus, your holy servant whom you appointed.
- 6:03But everything they did was determined beforehand according
- 6:07to your will. And now, O Lord, hear their
- 6:10threats and give us your servants great boldness in
- 6:14preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with
- 6:18healing power. May miraculous signs and wonders
- 6:21be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
- 6:26After this prayer the meeting place shook, and they were all
- 6:31filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of
- 6:35God with boldness. All the believers were united in
- 6:40heart and mind, and they felt that what they owned was not
- 6:44their own, so they shared everything they had.
- 6:48The apostles testified powerly to the resurrection of the Lord
- 6:52Jesus, and God's great blessing was upon them all.
- 6:57There were no needy people among them, because those who owned
- 7:00land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the
- 7:03apostles to give to those in need.
- 7:06For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed
- 7:10Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.
- 7:14He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of
- 7:18Cyprus. He sold the field he owned and
- 7:20brought the money to the Apostles.
- 7:33Jesus, you have a Spirit of courage that you give us.
- 7:38Lord. As we hear about these disciples
- 7:40praying boldly for your courage, let us do the same.
- 7:45Holy Spirit, give us your courage, your courageousness,
- 7:51that we would stand tall, shoulders back, and speak
- 7:56clearly about you and your love for us, and your forgiveness for
- 8:02all who would receive it. Thank you that you do not ask us
- 8:08to hide in the corners and live quiet lives of submission, but
- 8:13to stand tall and to Share your story with anyone who would hear
- 8:18it or give us your courage. Give us your sensitivity to know
- 8:23when to speak these words, and may your spirit prompt, empower,
- 8:29and use us to further your Kingdom.
- 8:34And no matter how much or how little of that happens, we know
- 8:38that it is you and your sacrifice for us that saves us,
- 8:43not how smart we are with our words.
- 8:46So we just thank you for that free and beautiful gift of mercy
- 8:50and forgiveness and salvation. We are so, so grateful for you,
- 8:55Jesus, and we pray all of this in your loving and saving name.
- 9:00I'm in.
