- 1:49Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Good morning Darling, Hello helloes,
- 1:57you'll get men today. Is your name, Teddy David? Who is
- 2:00this? My name's Johnny Dollar. I'm in her apartment. What now?
- 2:06Listen to me. I'm an insurance investigator and there's been a couple of murders
- 2:08here in Elisa's apartment. She's going to need you and all the help she
- 2:12can get to bring her out of it, mostly you. I've called homicide
- 2:15and they're on their way, and it might be pretty rough for her.
- 2:17I've been right over tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey, in the
- 2:29Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact expenscout America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator
- 2:35is truly Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the
- 2:53Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures
- 2:58during my investigation of the Tears of Night Matter. It was a long morning
- 3:06and a lieutenant of police thought I was crazy when he met me in the
- 3:08apartment with two dead men and the hysterical woman. My face was bruised and
- 3:13black and blue from the beating the dead men had handed me the night before.
- 3:16The lieutenant his name is Brady, had a time getting hold of Hillary
- 3:20Fuchs to back up my story. But Teddy Davis was a different matter.
- 3:23He showed up with a doctor and lawyer, and through their combined efforts at
- 3:27least Wendover was removed not to police headquarters but to a private hospital. It
- 3:31was obvious from Potter test that Missus Wendover could not have fired the forty five,
- 3:35which ended the lives of Feli and Toby. Obvious to me. Lieutenant
- 3:38Brady was a skeptical man. You stay right there and keep your trap shut.
- 3:42I'll figure out what to do with you in a minute, all right,
- 3:45Come on, get those beskets otia. I say, Dollar, Hi,
- 3:47Teddy, how's missus Wendell? Oh? That remains to be seen.
- 3:50She's screaming about that. Don curse again. She thinks she had something to
- 3:53do with these murders. Dollar. I don't know quite how you fit into
- 3:58all this. I do know, terribly indebted to you for calling me.
- 4:00Now, what can I do for you? Are you in trouble? I
- 4:02don't think so. Brady's just excited. He can't see where I should be
- 4:05involved, so he suspects me of what Oh, he doesn't know that.
- 4:10He's a policeman and he suspects everybody. But don't you worry about it.
- 4:13You get back to her. I really do have a good lawyer. He
- 4:15can work on it if you give the word. I can't just walk out
- 4:17of here feeling that you're in jeopardy. No, what can I do?
- 4:20I thought you were over at the hospital, mister Davis. I was.
- 4:24I came back to see what I could do for mister Dollar. You can
- 4:26scram now, watch whom you're talking to, Lieutenant. This man is my
- 4:30friend. Hey, you kid, not a bit. Take it easy,
- 4:32fellas, take it easy. You said your name's Dollar, Insurance dick.
- 4:36Let's see your buzzer. Okay, on a Hartford, what's a job?
- 4:43Missus Windover's husband died two years ago. She just got around to filing for
- 4:46benefits last week. We were curious about it. On Well, can't you
- 4:49see missus Wendell left him? Huh? As near as I can make out,
- 4:54Missus Wentover has overlooked a lot of things since her husband's death. Taxes,
- 4:58bank accounts, what not. Hiller re Fuchs can tell you that much.
- 5:00This curse business. She mumbled about, Well, she lost her husband
- 5:04before that, her brother killed in the war, and her father before that.
- 5:08You know, you don't seem to pay much attention. I explained all
- 5:11the copy and the cooler. If you open your mouth again, mister Davis,
- 5:15come on, how about the insurance? Well all, okay, I
- 5:17was ready to leave town last night. As a matter of fact, I'd
- 5:20called for a plane from fuchs office when a man named Scanlon came in,
- 5:25mistook me for Fuchs and said Sam Costigan wanted to see me. Costigan's got
- 5:29a gambling place on the other Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know about
- 5:30it. Go on, well, Costigan gave me a necklace, the Tears
- 5:33of Night. Said it belonged to Missus wentover. He asked me to bring
- 5:36it back to her, said she'd painted at the roulette table. When I
- 5:41got here, Missus wentover was wearing the Tears of Night or something that looked
- 5:44just like it. Well, I was curious. I looked up the jeweler
- 5:46who had made it, a man named Mortuus. He said, I was
- 5:48carrying the real thing. When I left his place, A couple of men
- 5:51from Costigan's place followed me. Oh, those two who would killed Feeling and
- 5:56Toby. They caught up with me outside of this apartment house to shake me
- 6:00down for the necklace, but I mailed it to myself at my hotel,
- 6:03so they worked me over and left me there when I came too earlier this
- 6:08morning, I came up here and found missus Windover sitting here in a state
- 6:11of shock. The two stiffs in a room. That's it, Yeah,
- 6:15Brady, that's it. How long you been an insurance dick? Fourteen years?
- 6:18You bonded? Yes? Okay? Are you going to let him go
- 6:23round? Shut up? Shut up, and I'll tell you both what I'm
- 6:26up against here. I know missus Wendover couldn't have had anything to do with
- 6:29the killings. I know you Dollar couldn't either. Then go out and find
- 6:32who killed those two men, those two and the other one. Huh.
- 6:36Costigan was gunned down a couple of hours ago, about three o'clock in the
- 6:46afternoon. Brady released me and Teddy Davis drove me back to my hotel.
- 6:50The clerk at the desk looked at my bandage face and turned eight chase of
- 6:54white when he handed me my key. I thanked him and told him I'd
- 6:57kept a date with a Arracuda. I was feeling kiddish, also a little
- 7:00dizzy and a little tired. I was looking forward to a hot shower and
- 7:03ten hours sleep when I walked in my room. Oh Dollar, I've been
- 7:09expicturing you coming coming. Oh oh, mister Mortius, I've been amusing myself
- 7:16with his pocket chest set of yours, Mexican. Sit down, Sit down.
- 7:19You've hit a hectic night. Your boys were pretty rough, mister Mortius.
- 7:24He and Toby two men of another world, mister Dollar, not of
- 7:28our world. Allow me to apologize for their actions. I want more than
- 7:31an apology. They almost beat me to death, and so unnecessary too.
- 7:36I underestimated you, mister Dollar, such an ingenious method of protecting the tears
- 7:41of night. Why so by the simple expedient of placing it in an enrape
- 7:45and mailing it to yourself from my hotel lobby. You hired a guardians the
- 7:48entire United States Postal Service, not to mention the armed forces one of these.
- 7:54No, no, no thanks. I'm one of those faint hearted persons
- 7:57who cannot abide liquor unto it after six in the afternoon, What happens?
- 8:01Now? We wait for the mail? Wait too, precisely. Then,
- 8:07while I'm waiting, maybe you'll be kind enough to tell me about the double
- 8:09cross if you can bear my vanity. Mister Dallaye, I have invented a
- 8:15new word, triple cross. It has a ring to it. Eh,
- 8:18that sounds likely. You see, mister Scannon approached me last week and asked
- 8:20me to duplicate the Tears of night. Missus Wendover had truly pawned at the
- 8:24gaming table. Naturally, I became suspicious. I mean guess what you became
- 8:28suspicious of? Oh? Well, it was fairly obvious that Missus Scanlon was
- 8:33planning to double cross mister Costigan. That is when the time came to return
- 8:37Missus Wendover's necklace. He's Canlon, I mean intended to return the bogus piece
- 8:41I made up and you got under their That is when I first conceived my
- 8:45own plans. Yes, Unfortunately, mister Costigan learned of the little deceit going
- 8:48on around him, and mister Skennon was forced to shoot him. So scan
- 8:52and shirtcast agin about Toby and feeling Missus s Canlon again abetted by the last
- 8:58of the House of Morts, you helped him kill them. Then, planted
- 9:01them and at least went over as a partner. Oh dear, crude touch,
- 9:05I had a purpose with two cadavers in a living room. She was
- 9:09very unlikely to discuss a bogus necklace with the police, and I doubt very
- 9:11much if she knew whether she was wedding the original or in imitation. Flighty
- 9:16girl, that's the lousiest thing the house of MOUs ever did She walked in
- 9:20and found these two there, And the doctor doesn't know whether she'll ever be
- 9:22saying again. Oh, dear dear, If you had merely returned the necklace
- 9:26to missus Wendover, it would have been a simple thing to effect in exchange,
- 9:30and none of this would have been necessary. Well, then, by
- 9:33gones are by gone? YEA sure, I know you just sit here and
- 9:37wait for the mail. No, no, no, no, we wait
- 9:39for the mail. What about your playmate, Scanlon? Why isn't he waiting
- 9:43with you? Scandon? I'm afraid I'll be hot for a murder of two
- 9:46or three this night. I'm certain the police will find his body before the
- 9:50day is out. But I did need him to help me carry the bodies
- 9:52to a lease. Wender is a partent Alise, tell me something, mister
- 9:56dollar. Does that name Alise bother you with much as it bothers me?
- 10:01Give me a woman with a name like Celeste or Josephine or Roxanne, those
- 10:07certain names for the creatures, but at least yeah, twaddle, where are
- 10:11the police? Kind of fine scammon? Oh in my hotel room, which
- 10:13I departed, Hateley, once the room clerk could inform me of your ingenious
- 10:18method for protecting the necklace, I shot him. There you were cheap,
- 10:22mister Watchfa's slipter. I don't understand ten thousand dollars a necklace. It's not
- 10:26quite a king's ransom, is it. The tears of Night are worth closer
- 10:31to one hundred thousand dollars. I'm afraid I misinformed you to their value.
- 10:35I didn't want you to become suspicious. I suppose you think you'll get away
- 10:39with it. Well, I'm an old man attended to a destitute and bankrupt
- 10:46jewelry firm with nothing ahead a few grim years and finally a whimpering end that
- 10:52we are sit in. Party live. That's what I wanted to live,
- 10:58and this is my opportunity to live like a king and young man I've taken
- 11:03it many vv VT crazy. You're crazier than I A skid of went a
- 11:09summer's. They'll grab you before you make the airport. I don't think they
- 11:13will. I shall leave here and turn the tears of night into cash.
- 11:18With a well laden purse, I shall guarantee to elude the police over half
- 11:22the world in two years, maybe three. Yes, they'll get me,
- 11:26but I have spent the money. And what more could a man ask than
- 11:31a perfect fulfillment of all his wishes? Oh, I ask you, sir,
- 11:35as one gentleman to another, what more could a man ask? Cautious
- 11:39mister Dollar, I do shoot? Well, answer it, tell them to
- 11:43go away. I'll be right beside you. All right, open it one
- 11:54side, Dollar, Canon, I find you waiting for you dirty. You
- 12:03didn't do such a good job on caution, mister sken and I have a
- 12:07gun all last long enough to let you have it. Your loss of blood
- 12:11has made you groggy, mister Skenner, but still good enough. Scannon rolled
- 12:20over and lay still. Watch was kind of grunted, lean back against the
- 12:22wall. He had a pain look on his face. H I do believe
- 12:33I've been shot. I need a little assistance. I can't seem to hold
- 12:41my feet, Sir, I can't see my feet. I still yeah,
- 12:50Yeah, it was an awkward plan at best. Yeah, demotuous new se
- 13:01go No Dollar, what if you're letting to escape show speak? Will I'm
- 13:11dead? Let me have the police expense accounts well expense a count total four
- 13:35hundred and five dollars and sixteen cents. Details missus windev will recover remarks.
- 13:41I'll stand for the last two days of expense myself. I didn't have any
- 13:45business sticking my nose and the jewelry end of it. But if you make
- 13:48me pay for them, don't never try to hire me again. Yours truly,
- 13:52Johnny Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about next week's intriguing
- 14:07story. Next week the matter of a reasonable doubt, A case of many
- 14:11doubts, and believe me, all of them are most unreasonable. Join us,
- 14:16won't you? Yours truly? Johnny Dalton, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar,
- 14:24starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. Written by John Dawson,
- 14:28It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in this week's cast where
- 14:33Virginia Greg Victor Perrin, Jack Krushin, Janeavello, William Conrad, Frank Gerstall,
- 14:37Marvin Miller and Will Wright. Musical supervision by A. Marigo Marino and
- 14:43Carl Fatina. Be sure to join us on Monday Night, same time in
- 14:46Station for another exciting story of Yours truly, Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking
- 16:26welcome back. Well. Overall a pretty decent cereal looking the uh and more
- 16:33convenient for Johnny Doller. But overall it was a good crime story. This
- 16:41was actually adapted from two separate half hour mystery programs. It reused a story
- 16:51from nineteen forty eight, The Diamond Quartet on Jeff Reagan, and also The
- 16:57Adventures of Sam Space The Tears of night Keeper from July twenty fourth of nineteen
- 17:06forty nine. I think it's a pretty reliable thing if there's a real serious
- 17:11beating of the detective. It was adapted from Sam Spay, I mean not
- 17:15from Sam Spay, but from Jeff Reagan, because they did those pretty prodigiously
- 17:19on that show. All right, folks, let's go ahead and get into
- 17:23our next show. As we continue on with Belladonna was poison from the Carter
- 17:30Brown Mysteries. Carter Brown Mysteries adventures and excitement and suspense based on the best
- 17:48selling novels by the slick storytelling sensation Gotter Brown. Being an actor is fun
- 18:11most of the time. We get all the excitement of a dramatic situation with
- 18:15none of the worry because it's all being worked out for you beforehand by a
- 18:18writer. But the fun fizzles out when a real life dramatic situation up since
- 18:22smacks you in the face and there's no script to rely on. Just because
- 18:26my name was rock Stone and they tacked the word inspector in front of it
- 18:30for my TV show, There's no Future in Murder. I was given star
- 18:33building by homicide Inspector Jakes when the actress Hanno Vogue was killed. Now,
- 18:37the inspector didn't like me, and this was his way of showing it.
- 18:41Rock Darling, this is the most wonderful publicity the show could ever have had.
- 18:45We look at things from different angles. You're the producer, Aarli,
- 18:48and that's fine for you. I'm just an actor and right now I wish
- 18:51I'd never gone to drama at school. What a story from the page in
- 18:56every paper, Inspector rock Stone TV hunts for Killer. There's no future in
- 19:02murder, says Stone, with a hot lead to prove it. Oh,
- 19:04this is terrific. This is terrible, Inspector Jakes may have shut this onto
- 19:08your Rock, but you'll have to go through with it. You'll have to
- 19:11find the murderer. This will catch the public's imagination. They'll expect it.
- 19:15You're crazy, Oh, I find who killed her? Deduction. You've been
- 19:19playing this show for over a year, Sam Long does a lot of research
- 19:23to make the scripts look authentic. You're a cop, Rock, Just play
- 19:26it the way you would in the show. But this is for real.
- 19:30Supposing I did find the murder, that would be wonderful, except that the
- 19:33murder mightn't have the same script as I have. He might rewrite it with
- 19:37me as the core. Let's worry about that when you found him, Come
- 19:40on, Rock, give start deducting. Well, okay, I guess I
- 19:44can try now. Ala Vogue was to be on next week's show. You
- 19:49auditioned it for it, right, correct, Inspector Stone, Well, how
- 19:52did you find her? Did you come from a casting agency? No?
- 19:56As a matter of fact, Sam introduced her to me. He said she
- 19:57had some theater experience and needed a break. It was only a small part,
- 20:02and she had the looks for it, so I gave it to her.
- 20:03Sam, Long, Maybe we're starting to get someplace there. You are
- 20:07see how easy this deduction is once you get going. Yeah, where will
- 20:11I find Sam at this time of the day? No, that's easy,
- 20:14Harry's gone. Let's go. Hi, Sam. Hey, we've been looking
- 20:25for you. Ah, the great Inspector Stone following your hot lead Inspector.
- 20:29That was Jake's idea, and I'm stuck with it. He listen, Sam
- 20:33Arline tells me you introduced ten of Vogue to her. That's right, So
- 20:37what say? What do you know about her? Sorry, inspector, that's
- 20:40confidential. I'll come on, Sam. Somehow Rock has to solve this thing
- 20:44or there'll be no show anymore and we'll all be out of a job.
- 20:47Yeah that's a point. Okay, but don't quote me. Someone whispered gently
- 20:53in my ear that Hannah Vogue was a brilliant young actress who should get a
- 20:57break on the show. Who said that, I told you, don't quote
- 21:00me, our revered sponsor himself. Do you mean all this Lacy of Lacy's
- 21:07departmental star, the very same I was told not to mention his name,
- 21:11but all the same, he wanted to see her appear on the show or
- 21:14else you'll have to talk to him. Rock to the sponsor. Are you
- 21:18nuts? What has to be done? And you'll have to do it alone?
- 21:21Well if that isn't typical. The producer gives the orders, the poor
- 21:23damact has to do the work. Come in, Stone, come in,
- 21:36glad you called. I was just going to leave a message at the studio
- 21:37that I wanted to see you or what about mister Lacy. I've read the
- 21:41story in the papers, and of course my manager, you Sheep, told
- 21:45me what had happened. You're a statement about intending to solve the murder yourself
- 21:48is a magnificent yest. Just don't I congratulate you on it. Thanks,
- 21:52It'll be wonderful thing for the show and for me as the sponsor. Of
- 21:56course, you need all the help you can get. That's why I have
- 22:00for you. Oh you're a man of the world. Stone. You'll understand
- 22:03when I say I knew and of whole rather world, sure, mister Lacey,
- 22:10and I wanted to help her. She aspired to be an actress.
- 22:14I told long to see she got a part in the show. I'd been
- 22:18quite frank about this Stone. I trust you realized the necessity of a discretion,
- 22:22and you're I'm a clam mister Lacy. If anyone else got to know
- 22:26this embarrassing for man in my position, naturally, I understand. Not quite,
- 22:34mister Lacey. What else? Is there? A couple of questions I'd
- 22:38like to ask? Have you any idea why she was murdered? None at
- 22:42all? When did you last see her? Oh? It, it must
- 22:47have been Tuesday night. Yes, we watched the show at her apartment.
- 22:51I left about nine. Did she seem worried about anything? Not at all?
- 22:55She was a usual vivacious self. Well, thanks, mister Lacey.
- 23:00Just one other thing. Would you give me the address of her apartment?
- 23:03It's of course, I'll write it down for you. Yes, you work,
- 23:10but thank you. You're prainding to call him? Huh? Well,
- 23:12in that case, perhaps I had better give you the key too. On
- 23:22my way to Hannahold's apartment, I wondered about the strange contrast in the dead
- 23:26girl's behavior. According to Old, as Lacy when he saw her on Tuesday
- 23:32night, she was her usual vivace herself. When I saw her later that
- 23:36same Tuesday night. She was scared, almost incoherent. I stood inside her
- 23:45apartment and looked around. It was really quite a layout. Obviously any girl
- 23:49and the oldest Lacey's protection had nothing but the best. I stepped over to
- 23:53the door of the bedroom. Well, well, an inhabitant, and what
- 24:00uninteresting inhabitant? Who are you? How did you get in here with this
- 24:03key? They out of you. This is Hannahvogg's apartment. I'm a friend
- 24:07of Hannah's. She invited me to stay here. I only arrived yesterday.
- 24:11Did you know she's been murdered? Yes, the place for here to day
- 24:15asking questions. I answered them all, and now here I am answering more
- 24:19from some one I don't even know. Well, we can remedy that.
- 24:22My name's Stone, Rock Stone, the television star, the man who's made
- 24:29all the headlines, and who's going to track down Hannah's murder. That's right,
- 24:33mister Stone. I think you're wonderful. You do. I certainly do,
- 24:40and I'd like to help you find the killer. Well, that's very
- 24:42kind of you, miss sir. I'm Lois sure nice to know you,
- 24:45Lois. It'll be even nicer. Once we were working closer together. Huh,
- 24:52Well, you're going let me help you when your search for the murder,
- 24:56aren't you. If you get as close as that, you won't be
- 24:59helping you. You'll be hindering. But it'd be fun, wouldn't it.
- 25:03I'm not interested in fun right now. I got too much else on my
- 25:07mind anyway, hal Caw, can you help me? I could give you
- 25:12a tip, such as ask your producer Ali Mauldin about her sister Kathy.
- 25:19I never know she had a sister, Kathy, Kathy died. Ask miss
- 25:25Mauldon how I left the Luscious Loss, puzzling over her cryptic reference to Kathy
- 25:34Moulden's death, and headed for Harry's Bar, where I expected to find Arlene
- 25:38and Sam still waiting for me. But there's a message that they'd gone to
- 25:42the studio. When I arrived there, I found I'd forgotten about the conference
- 25:47for the next program of There's No Future in Murder. We've got the scripts.
- 25:52Oh, we've got to do a check through them in case anyone has
- 25:53any bright ideas. Then I can go ahead with the casting, get someone
- 25:57else to play the murdered girl. Of course, in a minute, Arli,
- 26:00we can't do this show next week. Why not? Well, maybe
- 26:03you've forgotten Sam that Inspector Jakes told the press that Inspector rock Stone was gonna
- 26:07solve Hanna Voge's murder. No, that I don't see. We're gonna keep
- 26:11any viewers at all for the program. Next week's show has got to be
- 26:14devoted to the case of Hannah Vogue. In the next show, Inspector rock
- 26:17Stone has to reveal the murderer's identity. Hey, that's a colossal idea.
- 26:22Here, give me the details and I'll start work on the script right away.
- 26:25I haven't any details. What are you talking about? The show will
- 26:29have to be played without a script. It'll have to be an impromptu job.
- 26:32We'll have to play it by year. Well that's right, aren't you
- 26:34overlooking one minor point. You have no more idea right now who killed her
- 26:38than I have, or inspect the Jakes has. Well, that doesn't matter.
- 26:41We do the show just as it happened. We can get photographs to
- 26:45use some of the newspaper boys. We'll make sure everyone concerned appears in front
- 26:48of the cameras. Even if we don't find who the murder is, then

- 27:27show, that's all, including the murder. No, no, they wouldn't,
- 27:30dare. Look you imagine the question mark in people's minds. If someone
- 27:33refuses to co operate in it, practically, it brand them is the murderer
- 27:37right away. Yeah, he's right, Arleen, He's really got an idea
- 27:38there. Well, I suppose it could be possible, And if by any
- 27:45chance we unmasked the murderer, it'd lift the shows waiting like nothing else could.
- 27:48Wow, it looks like you, who don't need me anymore. If

- 28:12suggested. I ask you, oh about your sister huh, in particular about
- 28:22how she died? Who suggested you? Ask me? Well? The girl
- 28:26I found in Anna Voe's apartment, a girl called lower Shore. Never heard
- 28:30of her? How on earth does she know anything about it? I don't

- 29:03in San Antonio in a house that the man was renting. I wrote to
- 29:06her warning her. He said the man would get tired of her and throw
- 29:08it out. She wrote back and told me that that would never happen because
- 29:12she knew too much about him. I didn't pay any attention to that at
- 29:17the time, going ali. Then some months later I got another letter,
- 29:22but I'd prophesied had happened now. The guy had thrown her over, yes,
- 29:26but she wasn't standing for it. It told him she wanted a hundred
- 29:29thousand dollars conversation or she'd give him one hundred thousand dollars worth of publicity that
- 29:33would ruin him. I didn't get any letters after that because she died.
- 29:40She was Is that all not quite rot? But I'm afraid I've overdone the
