Latest / Foul Territory / Blue Jays unfairly in a little trouble for marketing in Japan? Ryan Yarbrough on signing back w/Yankees
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hot corner time. Teams are trying to get some more
- 0:06Speaker 1: attention in Japan because one club has almost all of
- 0:10Speaker 1: the attention in Japan right now. They happen to have
- 0:13Speaker 1: the best player on the planet and one of the
- 0:16Speaker 1: best all time on their team. That's the Dodgers. This
- 0:18Speaker 1: story has to do with the Blue Jays marketing. So
- 0:21Speaker 1: Evan Drelik put out a report that said a Japanese
- 0:25Speaker 1: boxing ring festooned with Toronto Blue Jays logos broke MLB's
- 0:30Speaker 1: marketing rules. Basically, according to this article, the Blue Jays
- 0:33Speaker 1: had some logos across the mat for a world title
- 0:36Speaker 1: boxing match, and they did not have permission from MLB.
- 0:41Speaker 1: You have to have permission from MLB to put any
- 0:44Speaker 1: kind of signage abroad. Okay, And the Blue Jays said
- 0:47Speaker 1: that they were aware of the sponsorship in advance of
- 0:49Speaker 1: the logo being used, and that it was not a
- 0:51Speaker 1: paid sponsorship. So that sounds like maybe that was a
- 0:54Speaker 1: difference in their mind and there's internal discussion right now.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I read this one actually kind of twice just make
- 1:00Speaker 1: sure I wasn't missing anything. KPI understand that teams need
- 1:04Speaker 1: to get permission and be on the same page with
- 1:07Speaker 1: MLB so that it's not just a marketing fest all
- 1:10Speaker 1: across the world, and that they want everything to be
- 1:12Speaker 1: in lockstep. But at the same time, although Kratz is
- 1:15Speaker 1: laughing at me because yes, the marketing fest would be good,
- 1:19Speaker 1: this part stood out to me later on in the article.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Sometimes MLBN teams will effectively pool their branding rights together.
- 1:25Speaker 1: The Dodgers, for example, started a fan club in Japan,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and Rob Manford commented on that in the spring. He said,
- 1:30Speaker 1: you're going to see some fan club events in Japan
- 1:32Speaker 1: that are different than anything that we've done, and those
- 1:35Speaker 1: are a joint effort between MLB and the Dodgers because
- 1:38Speaker 1: both MLB and Dodgers' rights are involved. So I get
- 1:42Speaker 1: all of that, and I'm wondering if some other teams
- 1:45Speaker 1: are feeling like they're not getting their fair share of
- 1:47Speaker 1: attention in a place that is just full of talent
- 1:52Speaker 1: that is coming over to the major leagues and succeeding.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Sounds like the mafia. I mean, if you want to advertise,
- 1:59Speaker 2: just line the pockets at MLB. I mean, it's that simple,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and obviously the Dodgers have figured that out. But I mean,
- 2:05Speaker 2: what was the price the Dodgers had or the Blue
- 2:07Speaker 2: Jays had to play it was a slap on the wrist,
- 2:09Speaker 2: So good for them going out, and you know it
- 2:12Speaker 2: was money well spent or what they said, they weren't
- 2:15Speaker 2: receiving anything back from it, So good for them trying
- 2:18Speaker 2: to go out and bend the rules a little bit.
- 2:21Speaker 2: And if the discipline is a slap on the wrist,
- 2:24Speaker 2: good for them.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I mean, the whole marketing scheme of fifty five to
- 2:32Speaker 4: sixty five year old white men in this game of
- 2:35Speaker 4: baseball stinks, like they can't figure out they can't figure
- 2:41Speaker 4: out exactly how to telecast a.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Regional game nationally.
- 2:44Speaker 4: They restrict rights for highlights to places like Foul Territory
- 2:52Speaker 4: who are trying to grow the game. It's like it's
- 2:56Speaker 4: restriction after restriction after restriction and fell in the NBA.
- 3:01Speaker 4: They're not perfect, but they're not restricting, especially not restricting players.
- 3:05Speaker 4: They're not restricting teams. Like if Major League Baseball wants
- 3:10Speaker 4: to ride the code tails of say the New York
- 3:13Speaker 4: Yankees and buy a said podcast of a big Yankees
- 3:18Speaker 4: fan and put money into that, I feel like that's
- 3:21Speaker 4: kind of hurtful to the other teams, Like what about
- 3:24Speaker 4: a Reds podcast, like say Riverfront Territory. But what now
- 3:30Speaker 4: they want to hop on the tails of the Dodgers too, Like,
- 3:32Speaker 4: don't don't take the easy marketing. There's another international team
- 3:36Speaker 4: that came within two outs of the World Series that
- 3:39Speaker 4: wants to promote their brand, which ultimately promotes Major League
- 3:45Speaker 4: Baseball's brand. To me, let it go, maybe maybe get
- 3:49Speaker 4: your get your rules right, but let it go. We're
- 3:53Speaker 4: growing it. Like, I want to know how many Blue
- 3:56Speaker 4: Jay fans are now over in Japan because they just
- 3:58Speaker 4: watched a seven game series that was epic strike while
- 4:02Speaker 4: the Iron's hot. Let everybody because a rising tide raises
- 4:05Speaker 4: all ships. So let these teams advertise and market in
- 4:10Speaker 4: different ways. It's twenty twenty five.
- 4:13Speaker 1: They want control, though, I mean, I agree with you,
- 4:16Speaker 1: it's one I would say if they want to approve
- 4:18Speaker 1: the messaging because they don't want a team to put
- 4:20Speaker 1: something out there that's like inappropriate or crosses the line. Okay,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm with you on that. But to tell teams like
- 4:28Speaker 1: everything has to go through them, I mean that sounds
- 4:31Speaker 1: a little helicopter parent ish to me. But I see
- 4:34Speaker 1: where the fight is right now. I mean KP. You've
- 4:37Speaker 1: seen this go on for the last several years. The
- 4:40Speaker 1: Blue Jays, I give them credit, have at least made
- 4:43Speaker 1: a bid a fight for Roki Sazaki, a pretty strong one,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and before that, show Hey Otani. They didn't get those players,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and we actually saw the Blue Jays face those players
- 4:55Speaker 1: in the World Series, so it very directly impacts, of
- 4:58Speaker 1: course their business and also their results on the field.
- 5:02Speaker 3: How can you.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Get your team more popular in a country right now
- 5:06Speaker 1: that is just drooling Dodgers. I was there a year ago.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It's Dodgers everything everywhere and show Hey everything everywhere.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Grassy's point. I mean they played the Dodgers in
- 5:18Speaker 2: the World Series in seven games. How many more Japanese
- 5:22Speaker 2: fans did the Toronto Blue Jays receive? How many potential
- 5:25Speaker 2: Japanese free agents were watching those games in Japan because
- 5:28Speaker 2: they wanted to watch their fellow countrymen and show Hey
- 5:31Speaker 2: and Roke, Roki and Yamamoto. But they end up going, Wow,
- 5:35Speaker 2: the Blue Jays. That looks like a great city to
- 5:38Speaker 2: play for, a great fan base, an unbelievable organization. So
- 5:42Speaker 2: how much did the Blue Jays playing the Dodgers in
- 5:46Speaker 2: the World Series with the Japanese players, they have really
- 5:49Speaker 2: kind of maybe change the duration of you know, their
- 5:53Speaker 2: ability to go out and sign these guys. I mean
- 5:55Speaker 2: because like you mentioned, they had been in the sweepstakes
- 5:57Speaker 2: for all these guys over the last couple of years.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So good for them going out and doing what they did.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And you know, more importantly, like Kratzy was talking about too,
- 6:06Speaker 2: why is it such a big deal when teams or
- 6:09Speaker 2: places like foul Territory or if it's your independent guide
- 6:14Speaker 2: Home who wants to create a podcast and they want
- 6:17Speaker 2: to use MLB footage to just try to grow the game.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Isn't that what Major League Baseball should be wanting from people,
- 6:23Speaker 2: continue to grow this game, reach a younger audience. However,
- 6:27Speaker 2: you know they see it fit. I just hate that
- 6:30Speaker 2: even as a player, I don't even control or former player,
- 6:33Speaker 2: I don't even control access to my own highlights. I
- 6:36Speaker 2: can't go out and create a Kevin Plar podcast or
- 6:40Speaker 2: website and safely be able to use my own footage.
- 6:44Speaker 2: So it's kind of crazy what Major League Baseball does
- 6:47Speaker 2: in terms of, you know, how much they're helicopter parenting,
- 6:50Speaker 2: controlling you know, every single person when it comes to
- 6:53Speaker 2: the game of baseball.
- 6:55Speaker 4: And the marketing part of it. Like Major League Baseball
- 6:58Speaker 4: is losing the grassroots part of baseball. They've gotten rid
- 7:02Speaker 4: of an entire level of minor league entire two levels
- 7:05Speaker 4: of minor league baseball, and from what I hear, they're
- 7:07Speaker 4: gonna get rid of at least one more so small
- 7:10Speaker 4: town America, small town podcasts are losing the access to
- 7:15Speaker 4: the game. And I wanted to comment on the fact
- 7:19Speaker 4: that I talked to somebody who was in the meetings
- 7:22Speaker 4: with Shohey and Rokie. He said, you know what, I
- 7:27Speaker 4: don't know if we ever had a chance, but I
- 7:29Speaker 4: do know that we put together a really really good
- 7:32Speaker 4: package in the sense of like what you saw their
- 7:35Speaker 4: spring training, what they've done in Toronto and everything like that,
- 7:40Speaker 4: and they're very proud of that, and you go, okay, whatever,
- 7:42Speaker 4: you like, you're you're proud of the team that you
- 7:44Speaker 4: work for. But then you see Shane Bieber sign back
- 7:49Speaker 4: a very team friendly deal after being there for two
- 7:53Speaker 4: months plus the playoffs. Now you go, okay, well, this team,
- 7:58Speaker 4: this team's done some ancillary things. They've done some things
- 8:03Speaker 4: that maybe some other teams aren't doing that can help
- 8:06Speaker 4: draw people to Toronto because KP knows the only people
- 8:09Speaker 4: to get drawn to Toronto when we played were the
- 8:12Speaker 4: dudes that were getting extra cash. Well, the Blue Jays
- 8:14Speaker 4: have cash. They have a monopolistic communications company that owns
- 8:19Speaker 4: their team. Essentially it's a publicly traded team and there
- 8:23Speaker 4: so they have cash in the country of Canada and
- 8:28Speaker 4: they're willing to do what it takes to get these
- 8:30Speaker 4: guys over here. So kudos to them, and they could
- 8:34Speaker 4: be the Beast of the East for a while if
- 8:36Speaker 4: they continue to spend like this when other teams may
- 8:40Speaker 4: not quite spend the same in the American League East.
- 8:43Speaker 1: In conclusion, a Blue Jay's logo on a boxing ring
- 8:46Speaker 1: sounds like something that, if it's illegal right now in
- 8:49Speaker 1: the league, should be made legal. That is good marketing
- 8:52Speaker 1: and promotion for Major League Baseball and for particular teams.
- 8:56Speaker 1: One clarification here, KP know no punishment at all actually
- 9:02Speaker 1: announced right now. There could be one. I don't think
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's going to be a big one. This sounds like
- 9:06Speaker 1: a rule that doesn't really get much of a penalty,
- 9:12Speaker 1: but we'll see. Yeah, exactly, I think KP basically said
- 9:15Speaker 1: what will result, which is probably a light little slap,
- 9:19Speaker 1: maybe even a warning because you know, apparently this might
- 9:22Speaker 1: have been done for the first time in this particular situation.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But anyway, if you have thoughts on this and you're
- 9:26Speaker 1: catching it after the Factor you're watching live, let us
- 9:28Speaker 1: know what you think. Hey, we've got Ryan Yarborough joining
- 9:31Speaker 1: us right now, and I see what is going to
- 9:34Speaker 1: be a very big smile as we talk about what
- 9:36Speaker 1: he just went through over the last week or so.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yard signed with the Yankees two and a half million
- 9:42Speaker 1: dollars for next season on one year contract. That stuff's
- 9:45Speaker 1: all out there in public.
- 9:46Speaker 3: That's why I'm saying it. Ryan.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Great to have you on, dude. Congratulations And I think
- 9:49Speaker 1: the easy question to ask here first is how different
- 9:52Speaker 1: this offseason experience is for you versus last year. If
- 9:56Speaker 1: you can remind people about spring training and hopping teams
- 10:00Speaker 1: and having a great year, yeah, I know.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Thanks for having me on, guys.
- 10:04Speaker 5: And you know, anytime you can get it done in
- 10:08Speaker 5: early November compared to a week in the spring training
- 10:11Speaker 5: I think is always a good thing. So especially being
- 10:16Speaker 5: able to kind of get ready, get the family situated,
- 10:19Speaker 5: know where we're going, get all the living, all the logistics,
- 10:22Speaker 5: taken care of. That's pretty great. Yeah, So I'm very
- 10:25Speaker 5: excited and especially get back to New York. It's very
- 10:30Speaker 5: exciting and.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Ready to go.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Hey, Ryan, what's up man, Good to see you again.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Always a nightmare at bat for me. I don't know
- 10:39Speaker 2: what it was. The way you pitched me, your arm
- 10:41Speaker 2: angle and typically I hit lefties good, but you always
- 10:44Speaker 2: ate my lunch.
- 10:46Speaker 3: My question to you is.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Given everything you went through the year before, was there
- 10:50Speaker 2: some conversations with the Yankees, kind of towards the end
- 10:53Speaker 2: of the year, maybe end of the postseason that you
- 10:55Speaker 2: would be interested in coming back, and maybe some eagerness
- 10:58Speaker 2: to kind of want to get something early, just because
- 11:01Speaker 2: I know how difficult it could be with you know,
- 11:02Speaker 2: a wife and kids and family and trying to get settled.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Was there any conversations with the Yankees? Yeah, before the
- 11:09Speaker 2: end of the year.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeahkvin, No, it's definitely tough at bat for me as well.
- 11:16Speaker 5: You know, you're always pretty aggressive, heatter, so I tried
- 11:18Speaker 5: not to feed right into what you wanted.
- 11:20Speaker 3: So I definitely tried to steer clear of you in
- 11:23Speaker 3: that way. But there wasn't really much conversations.
- 11:27Speaker 5: You know, we were kind of more focused on the
- 11:29Speaker 5: playoffs and kind of the end of the season that way,
- 11:33Speaker 5: and then the off season they just kind of they
- 11:35Speaker 5: call it pretty early, and they were just kind of
- 11:37Speaker 5: pretty aggressive with it, wanting to get it done. I
- 11:40Speaker 5: think you're always curious because I feel like you can
- 11:44Speaker 5: add a lot of value to a team and kind
- 11:46Speaker 5: of see where you fit in hope to be back.
- 11:49Speaker 5: But after dealing with free agency last year and how
- 11:52Speaker 5: long it took, I didn't really have any expectations with it,
- 11:54Speaker 5: so it was just kind of just waiting to kind
- 11:57Speaker 5: of see how the market and everything developed. So the
- 11:59Speaker 5: fact that they kind of wanted to jump on it
- 12:01Speaker 5: early and get it.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Done, I was.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I was very excited to that, and like I said,
- 12:05Speaker 5: we enjoyed it there in New York last year, so
- 12:06Speaker 5: we're glad to be back.
- 12:08Speaker 3: KP.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I want to give you picture speak. Basically, he was
- 12:12Speaker 4: saying he wasn't going to throw you a strike because
- 12:15Speaker 4: you were going to swing at it anyway. So that's
- 12:18Speaker 4: what he was saying nicely, and he said.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I know what that means. I know what he meant,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and thank you for saying it nicely, because yeah, I
- 12:29Speaker 2: read picture code. I know what he was saying, and
- 12:30Speaker 2: he could have just said, hey, you were going to
- 12:32Speaker 2: swing and everything, and I wasn't going to throw anything
- 12:34Speaker 2: in his own but he did it nicely, So thank
- 12:36Speaker 2: you for that.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely he always wanted to throw the bag.
- 12:45Speaker 5: No, I wouldn't say that that aggressive, but I know
- 12:47Speaker 5: he was definitely looking for the fastbar early.
- 12:49Speaker 4: So he thought your name was Calvin Polar Kelvin p Lar.
- 12:54Speaker 4: But anyway, swinging anything but yards whenever whenever somebody goes
- 12:59Speaker 4: to free agency, the whole, the whole like conversation. I
- 13:02Speaker 4: always ask guys like who else called? I mean, did
- 13:06Speaker 4: you did you call the Red Sox and Orioles? Because
- 13:08Speaker 4: I feel like you need to knock off every American
- 13:11Speaker 4: League East team and I was hoping this offseason would
- 13:14Speaker 4: have been the time that you knocked that off. Did
- 13:17Speaker 4: anybody else call? I don't know if you feel comfortable
- 13:19Speaker 4: saying who else called if you want to, but like,
- 13:23Speaker 4: did anybody else call?
- 13:24Speaker 3: Because it was that early?
- 13:26Speaker 5: I think, Uh, I mean, obviously, who's the only person
- 13:29Speaker 5: who's on the American League.
- 13:30Speaker 3: He's so far as it just Steve Pierce, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 3: I think is he the only guy?
- 13:33Speaker 2: You know?
- 13:34Speaker 3: The whole gauntlet, But.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I mean there was other teams that were interested in.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Like I said, it was so early in the off seasons.
- 13:41Speaker 5: I think that they were fielding like a lot of
- 13:45Speaker 5: the interests and were in like thing. But obviously a
- 13:47Speaker 5: lot of teams had were other priorities like you like
- 13:52Speaker 5: al he normally goes throughout the whole offseason normal. It's
- 13:54Speaker 5: like there's a certain guys who kind of set the
- 13:56Speaker 5: market for everybody else. So I think with teams being
- 13:59Speaker 5: interested in their work, other teams involved, I think it
- 14:02Speaker 5: was more of the Yankees just being so aggressive and
- 14:05Speaker 5: you know, being that perfect storm of we enjoyed it there.
- 14:08Speaker 5: We live here in Tampa, so like the fact that
- 14:10Speaker 5: we can use the whole complex whole off season, and
- 14:12Speaker 5: I'm sure, like you guys know, any chance you can
- 14:15Speaker 5: get an extra six weeks at home for spring training,
- 14:17Speaker 5: you're gonna take.
- 14:18Speaker 3: It any day.
- 14:20Speaker 5: So it was just a perfect storm of we really
- 14:22Speaker 5: enjoyed it there. We knew what they were about, and
- 14:25Speaker 5: I feel like they got me better last year. They
- 14:28Speaker 5: know who I am and how I can help the team.
- 14:30Speaker 5: So like I said, I think it was just a
- 14:31Speaker 5: perfect fit and we're definitely just excited to kind of
- 14:36Speaker 5: be back, and like I said, definitely, now being able
- 14:39Speaker 5: to use the complex all off season is just going
- 14:40Speaker 5: to be great.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I got two questions for you. I'm kind of
- 14:44Speaker 2: just looking at the teams you played for, New York Dodgers, Toronto, Tampa,
- 14:49Speaker 2: Kansas City. I'd say all pretty good resumes of helping
- 14:54Speaker 2: pitchers become the best version of themselves. Can you kind
- 14:57Speaker 2: of talk about maybe the individual teams or one of
- 15:00Speaker 2: the teams that really kind of stands out in terms
- 15:03Speaker 2: of your development? And then I kind of want to
- 15:05Speaker 2: just touch on your short time with the Blue Jays.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Being a Blue Jay guy, did you feel like when
- 15:09Speaker 2: you were there that you felt they had the potential
- 15:13Speaker 2: to do what they ended up doing this year.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent. I feel like every team like
- 15:20Speaker 5: they have so many different perspectives. I feel like that's
- 15:22Speaker 5: some of the biggest thing is for me, You're able
- 15:24Speaker 5: to get so many different insights from different people. Obviously,
- 15:28Speaker 5: I played for Tampa for five years and the biggest
- 15:31Speaker 5: thing I feel like that they preach is just simplicity
- 15:33Speaker 5: and just really trying to simplify things, and especially as
- 15:36Speaker 5: when you're a young guy just getting into the league.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Anytime you can simplify because there's so many things that
- 15:41Speaker 5: are going on, the better you're going to be from
- 15:44Speaker 5: just going out there and knowing you have to do
- 15:46Speaker 5: one or two little singer things and be successful that way,
- 15:49Speaker 5: and just really really emphasize those things. And then between
- 15:54Speaker 5: Kansas City was honestly just a short stint. Enjoyed it there,
- 15:56Speaker 5: but it was, like I said, getting a different respective. Okay,
- 15:59Speaker 5: maybe this pitch that I was told wasn't that great. Hey,
- 16:02Speaker 5: it's better than you think it is. Use it a
- 16:04Speaker 5: little more. And then I was able to start and
- 16:06Speaker 5: kind of do that there. And then being traded to
- 16:09Speaker 5: La it was a matter of just being able to
- 16:12Speaker 5: kind of fill any role they had. You know, they
- 16:14Speaker 5: have so much depth in so many arms. Just when
- 16:16Speaker 5: I got traded over there in twenty three, they were
- 16:18Speaker 5: kind of banged up just because their starters were a
- 16:21Speaker 5: little banged.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Up and their bullpen had been used a ton.
- 16:24Speaker 5: So I basically came in there and through like once
- 16:26Speaker 5: every fifth day and gave.
- 16:27Speaker 3: The bullpen a blow. So anytime you can do that.
- 16:29Speaker 5: In August September was great to kind of give those
- 16:33Speaker 5: guys and keep them fresh into the playoffs.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Didn't go the way we wanted to.
- 16:37Speaker 5: That year, but I know, just being able to kind
- 16:39Speaker 5: of limit those guys and not having to throw so
- 16:41Speaker 5: much that time of year is great. And then, like
- 16:43Speaker 5: I said, Toronto, Toronto, I enjoyed it. You know, it
- 16:46Speaker 5: was a really short stint, but you know, it's a
- 16:48Speaker 5: really cool experience.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Being able to be there and.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Get to know that, get to know the team and
- 16:54Speaker 5: the fan base and the coaching staff was great. And
- 16:57Speaker 5: I think the big thing with the Yankees is they're
- 16:58Speaker 5: just they have a couple of different guys that give
- 17:01Speaker 5: so many different looks where maybe one guy is more
- 17:03Speaker 5: pitch designed, other guy with mechanical, another guy with scouting reports.
- 17:06Speaker 5: So they kind of really cover their bases that way.
- 17:08Speaker 5: But the big thing for me was their their pitch
- 17:11Speaker 5: design and you know, the slight changes to your grips
- 17:13Speaker 5: and things like that could really just add extra depth
- 17:15Speaker 5: or extra movement and just was really beneficial, especially for
- 17:20Speaker 5: me for my change up specifically helped to help tremendously.
- 17:24Speaker 5: So I enjoyed that, but you know, it was it
- 17:27Speaker 5: was a little weird. I'll say, back to Toronto, where
- 17:30Speaker 5: I got traded over there in twenty four and at
- 17:32Speaker 5: that point, like they ended up trading all, like a
- 17:34Speaker 5: lot of their pieces off because they knew they weren't
- 17:36Speaker 5: going to make the playoffs.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So it was.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I thought from they had a great clubhouse, good chemistry.
- 17:43Speaker 5: It was just you knew, like they knew they weren't
- 17:45Speaker 5: going to be in at that point, so it was
- 17:46Speaker 5: just a matter of getting the young guys some reps
- 17:48Speaker 5: and things like that.
- 17:49Speaker 3: So and then in.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Spring training, I thought they had a really good team,
- 17:52Speaker 5: because that's why I ended up spending spring with this
- 17:55Speaker 5: year being back there, and I think they knew that
- 17:59Speaker 5: they have had a really good team and some good potential.
- 18:01Speaker 5: It was just a matter of kind of just getting
- 18:03Speaker 5: into the season and getting underway.
- 18:05Speaker 4: How are you talking about what the Yankees kind of
- 18:08Speaker 4: taught you or the things that you're gleaning from your
- 18:10Speaker 4: time with the Yankees and you're going back. What are
- 18:13Speaker 4: your goals for this season? In the sense I mean
- 18:15Speaker 4: obviously everybody says stay healthy, contribute to the team. You
- 18:20Speaker 4: started eight games, you pitched in nineteen and you finished four.
- 18:25Speaker 4: How do you make your goals? But also, as every
- 18:30Speaker 4: baseball player does, this is the time of year where
- 18:32Speaker 4: you're like, I gotta get better at this. I gotta
- 18:34Speaker 4: get stronger at this to be able to make it through.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Like how do you set your goals? Because you could
- 18:38Speaker 4: go and make twenty five starts or you could go
- 18:43Speaker 4: and make six starts and finish twenty five games.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's where the versatility really comes in,
- 18:51Speaker 5: and I think that's what they really valued and we're
- 18:54Speaker 5: really excited to bring me back. One is because kind
- 18:56Speaker 5: of what I've done my whole career is you've done
- 18:58Speaker 5: a little bit of everything.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I know it.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Like it's easy to say, like you said, like everyone
- 19:03Speaker 5: wants to be healthy. I think that is a big
- 19:05Speaker 5: priority for me this year, just because I missed two
- 19:07Speaker 5: months within oblique, so I.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Know that's everyone's priority. But like I'm really trying to.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Find ways and make sure that doesn't become a problem
- 19:16Speaker 5: again by adding some new things to my workouts or
- 19:19Speaker 5: on the recovery side. And I think that's where being
- 19:22Speaker 5: here with the complex and getting with their hands on
- 19:25Speaker 5: me all off season and getting you prepared that way
- 19:27Speaker 5: is really beneficial.
- 19:29Speaker 3: And then, like I said, with a lot of the.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Pitch design stuff, it helps kind of hitting the ground
- 19:34Speaker 5: running going into the year, but it's really tough. I
- 19:39Speaker 5: know they're all probably I'm going to be built up
- 19:42Speaker 5: to like cover a lot of innings just like I
- 19:44Speaker 5: can throughout. And then obviously we have some injuries early on,
- 19:48Speaker 5: so I think there's some good chance like good starts
- 19:51Speaker 5: early and then we'll just kind of see how it unfolds.
- 19:54Speaker 5: It's just a matter of kind of I don't want
- 19:57Speaker 5: to say making it broad because like you say, you
- 19:59Speaker 5: want to have really specific goals, But like I said,
- 20:01Speaker 5: with my different roles, I can kind of do a
- 20:02Speaker 5: little bit of everything. So it's not trying to pigeonhole
- 20:05Speaker 5: myself one way when I know they're going to ask
- 20:07Speaker 5: a lot of different things out of me throughout the year.
- 20:10Speaker 4: All right, real quick one on and then I got
- 20:12Speaker 4: to ask my big question, but the quick one. You're
- 20:14Speaker 4: at the complex. You said you're going into complex every day.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going in.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Are you going to the minor league side? Are you
- 20:21Speaker 4: going to Steinbrenner.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Right now, it's all at Hines on the minor league
- 20:27Speaker 5: side right now. They haven't fully transition yet, but I
- 20:29Speaker 5: know they'll at some point go over there. And when
- 20:32Speaker 5: obviously I think more guys come down probably after the
- 20:34Speaker 5: new year, things like that, but this was my first week.
- 20:38Speaker 5: I'll be kind of coming in and out like I
- 20:40Speaker 5: have at a place that I work out with separately,
- 20:43Speaker 5: But right now all.
- 20:43Speaker 3: The throwing has been there, and then we'll just kind.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Of it'll be pretty fluid to see how everything will
- 20:48Speaker 5: transition and be able to use it as much as possible,
- 20:51Speaker 5: because it definitely is an added bonus being able to
- 20:53Speaker 5: use it.
- 20:55Speaker 4: I was just going to ask you are all the
- 20:56Speaker 4: raised things out of Steinbrenner. Have they completely limine it?
- 21:00Speaker 4: Or do you still drive down dal Maybury and see
- 21:03Speaker 4: a raised slash Yankees?
- 21:05Speaker 3: They got rid of that.
- 21:06Speaker 5: I think that got taken down as soon as possible,
- 21:09Speaker 5: even when we kind of came home right after the
- 21:11Speaker 5: season ended up. They took all the banners and stuff
- 21:14Speaker 5: down pretty quickly, So I think there's some semblance of
- 21:17Speaker 5: getting everything like set back up inside the way they
- 21:20Speaker 5: wanted to, But as far as all the raised banners
- 21:23Speaker 5: and stuff, that's definitely not there anymore.
- 21:29Speaker 2: He as someone who kind of was a utility type
- 21:33Speaker 2: of outfielder, could start, could come off the bench. Do
- 21:36Speaker 2: you ever see someone like you who is so versatile
- 21:39Speaker 2: that can close games, start games, you know, pitch bulk innings.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Do you ever see someone like yourself becoming more valuable
- 21:46Speaker 2: in terms of like what you receive in free agency
- 21:49Speaker 2: and hopefully you're the guy who kind of hopefully set
- 21:53Speaker 2: that market in the future, Like it's invaluable to have
- 21:55Speaker 2: a guy like you on a roster who on short
- 21:58Speaker 2: notice could be like, hey, leak skills not making it start.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I need you to go down the bullpen and start
- 22:02Speaker 2: and give us five innings.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we'll see.
- 22:07Speaker 5: I think the biggest thing that I've kind of taken
- 22:09Speaker 5: away is most teams don't necessarily understand the full value
- 22:16Speaker 5: of it until you're with them in the organization, and
- 22:19Speaker 5: then I think it just is like, man, like you
- 22:21Speaker 5: bring so many things to the table. I think from
- 22:23Speaker 5: the outside looking in, it's just more of like, yeah,
- 22:25Speaker 5: he can do some things here and there, But when
- 22:27Speaker 5: you're really into the organizations, like, man, he can cover
- 22:29Speaker 5: so many different things and is willing to do it
- 22:33Speaker 5: and just really help the team out in so many roles,
- 22:37Speaker 5: like you said, So every team that I've been a
- 22:39Speaker 5: part of, once i'm there, especially for the last couple
- 22:42Speaker 5: of years, like Man, you're The value you bring is
- 22:44Speaker 5: just is tremendous. So I think that's been the biggest
- 22:47Speaker 5: thing is the teams get to see it more once
- 22:50Speaker 5: I'm finally with them. So hopefully that continues and like
- 22:53Speaker 5: gets more across because I know some guys they say
- 22:55Speaker 5: it's like, man, I don't understand how you do it,
- 22:57Speaker 5: And I feel like when you're kind of forced to
- 23:00Speaker 5: do a bunch of different roles early on, and especially
- 23:02Speaker 5: in Tampa where you're just happy.
- 23:04Speaker 3: To be a big leaguer and contribute.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Really just how makes it easier down the road being
- 23:08Speaker 5: able to do Yeah, whatever you guys need, I'm here
- 23:10Speaker 5: for it all right.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Some was made about Sonny Gray, and I kind of
- 23:16Speaker 4: I argued against it about him not being a big
- 23:19Speaker 4: market pitcher. You have pitched in what I would consider
- 23:23Speaker 4: two big markets. Toronto you know can be a big market,
- 23:28Speaker 4: but you've also pitched in two small markets. Have you
- 23:31Speaker 4: seen or can you explain why people continually say, oh,
- 23:36Speaker 4: this guy's not a big market guy or this guy
- 23:39Speaker 4: is you know, and where you can run into that
- 23:42Speaker 4: kind of stuff because you've seen both sides of it.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I think we're maybe if you just let too
- 23:51Speaker 5: many of the outside the voices and everything you hear
- 23:57Speaker 5: from the media, because obviously there's way more coverage and
- 23:59Speaker 5: there's if you let that dictate you too much, I
- 24:03Speaker 5: feel like you're it could maybe like weigh on guys
- 24:06Speaker 5: and they put too much pressure on themselves that way.
- 24:08Speaker 5: I feel like for me personally, like it's like I'm
- 24:11Speaker 5: gonna be my toughest critic, right. I feel like we're
- 24:13Speaker 5: all as players are going to be the hardest on ourselves.
- 24:17Speaker 3: So I already know exactly when I'm like what I
- 24:19Speaker 3: need to do.
- 24:20Speaker 5: If I have a bad day, I'll be the first
- 24:21Speaker 5: person to tell you that I had a bad day.
- 24:24Speaker 5: So if I know what I can capable, if I'm
- 24:26Speaker 5: going to be the hardest person myself, I'm not gonna
- 24:28Speaker 5: let anything else influence it. And at the end of
- 24:30Speaker 5: the day, like it's you got to make your pitches
- 24:33Speaker 5: and you got to do your job regardless of the situation.
- 24:35Speaker 5: So I kind of like kept it simple that way
- 24:39Speaker 5: and not try to let too many things like influence
- 24:41Speaker 5: you and you just kind of go out there and
- 24:43Speaker 5: compete and get the job done.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Hey, this is the way to finish this conversation.
- 24:50Speaker 3: KP.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I know it's difficult, but do you want to read
- 24:52Speaker 1: out the stats? So Ran, when we talk to you,
- 24:55Speaker 1: we also chat behind the scenes to be like who
- 24:58Speaker 1: wants to ask the next question? Stuff like that. There
- 25:00Speaker 1: also a side bar conversation going on.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Oh, three for nineteen, Yeah, I knew it was a
- 25:08Speaker 2: tough at bat.
- 25:08Speaker 3: It was.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It's one of those at bats where it's not like,
- 25:12Speaker 2: it's not the overpowering stuff, and you're like, Okay, eventually
- 25:14Speaker 2: I'm going to figure him out. And he just kept
- 25:16Speaker 2: figuring out ways, whether it was the change of off
- 25:18Speaker 2: the cutter up and in, you know it was. It
- 25:21Speaker 2: wasn't a bat where you're like, oh my god, I'm
- 25:23Speaker 2: scared to death, but you're you're striking out or you're
- 25:26Speaker 2: jogging down the first baseline again because you just rolled
- 25:29Speaker 2: one over or got jammed. I knew it was bad.
- 25:31Speaker 2: That's why I mentioned it when I asked the first question.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I didn't know it was three for nineteen bad. But
- 25:37Speaker 2: we have a pretty good photographic memory of you know,
- 25:39Speaker 2: tough pictures we faced, and you got to be up
- 25:42Speaker 2: there with some of my worst numbers. You know.
- 25:45Speaker 5: He just definitely have had some good, good days against
- 25:48Speaker 5: the Blue Jays from all the years with Tampa and this.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Last year with New York.
- 25:53Speaker 5: So I just enjoyed, Like you said, it's not going
- 25:56Speaker 5: to be anything crazy where you're just like man, but like,
- 26:00Speaker 5: I really enjoyed the cat and mouse of it, the
- 26:04Speaker 5: game inside the game where you're just reading swings and
- 26:06Speaker 5: like able to see, Okay, what is he what do
- 26:08Speaker 5: you think he's looking for?
- 26:09Speaker 3: Okay, what do we do against him? Last at bat?
- 26:10Speaker 5: So I just love those little nuances in the game
- 26:13Speaker 5: that like just keep your brain everything engaged.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So I really enjoy all that stuff.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Now I want to follow up on that real quick
- 26:19Speaker 2: because I had a conversation with Blake Snell during the playoffs,
- 26:22Speaker 2: and he calls his own pitches because he truly believes
- 26:25Speaker 2: like he's he's smart enough to read the swings. Are
- 26:29Speaker 2: you a guy that calls his own pitches because you
- 26:31Speaker 2: feel like you can read swings and kind of read hitters,
- 26:34Speaker 2: or are you allowing the catcher to call the signs
- 26:37Speaker 2: and obviously you're gonna shake to what you feel comfortable with.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I have I've used the pitch calm
- 26:43Speaker 3: in the past.
- 26:43Speaker 5: I haven't used it the last year or two, it
- 26:48Speaker 5: was more of I think just early on, and if
- 26:50Speaker 5: I do use it in the future, it's more of man,
- 26:53Speaker 5: the pitch clock is kind of getting there and getting going,
- 26:57Speaker 5: and I think that can be like the time saving
- 26:59Speaker 5: aspect of like, hey, like we can still ping pom me,
- 27:02Speaker 5: you can still call pitches, but like I'm on a shake,
- 27:04Speaker 5: I'm just going to tell you exactly what I want
- 27:06Speaker 5: to go to next, compared to like four pitches on
- 27:09Speaker 5: both sides of the plate. That can add up to
- 27:10Speaker 5: timeframe and then you're kind of rushing to the plate.
- 27:13Speaker 5: But I do enjoy the the back and forth with
- 27:16Speaker 5: the catchers, and even if I'm shaking off or I'm
- 27:18Speaker 5: the guy who really likes to explain, I'll come in like, hey,
- 27:21Speaker 5: this is what I was thinking here and this is why.
- 27:23Speaker 5: So it's not like I just didn't want to throw
- 27:25Speaker 5: this on want or to throw this. There's always a
- 27:26Speaker 5: rhyme or a reason why I'm trying to do something,
- 27:29Speaker 5: so I always try to get that, and it's been
- 27:31Speaker 5: normally throughout the game. If like you are maybe not
- 27:33Speaker 5: on the same page as the first inning or two,
- 27:36Speaker 5: if you keep doing it and adding it up as
- 27:37Speaker 5: Cratzy will tell you like you're be on the same page,
- 27:40Speaker 5: and the more you throw it together throughout the season,
- 27:42Speaker 5: you're gonna have a generalized idea of it. But I
- 27:44Speaker 5: definitely understand what Smells talking about with the conviction of
- 27:48Speaker 5: like I just want to do it, I'm going to
- 27:49Speaker 5: do it at my pace and let's just get going.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Ryan, great insight man. Always always appreciate the conversation. And
- 27:57Speaker 1: I have a great Thanksgiving with the fam.
- 28:00Speaker 5: Awesome thanks guys, Happy Thanksgiving, and yeah, I appreciate have
- 28:03Speaker 5: you on
