- 2:49I want to talk a little bit about Helen Choate, who plays Patsy.
- 2:55So let's go ahead and take a listen to Nick Carter in an angle
- 3:00on murder. What's the matter? What is it? Another case for Nick
- 3:10Cotter Detective? Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all man
- 3:23hunters, the detective whose ability at solving crime is unequal in the history of
- 3:27detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective Night's Curious Adventure, an angle on
- 3:32murder or Nick Carter and the mystery of the mutilated point and my crap,
- 3:46and I wound my fingers around her throat. I squeeze or windpipe? Tight?
- 3:53Tighter, tighter, it's the matter of Nick. Put the lights on,
- 4:00all right? And I said, I wanted to hear the recorded confession
- 4:03you made of that ned murderer who killed his wife. I didn't think i'd
- 4:08have to listen to it in the dark. Oh that's the way we got
- 4:10him to confess in the first place. Oh, I'll take it that six
- 4:14okay, Nick, Nick Carter's office, I like to talk to mister Nicholas
- 4:17Carter. This is Nick Carter speaking. Oh hello Nick, this is John
- 4:20Hammel of the banker's associates. Oh hello John, have you been Nick?
- 4:24I'm in trouble. I can't discuss it over the phone. How soon can
- 4:27you meet me on West Street around the corner from the Greystone building where my
- 4:30offices are. Please get there as fast as you can. All right,
- 4:33John, I'll be there in ten minutes. I can now. Scubby,
- 4:47you understand exactly what you're gonna do. Yeah, Nick, Okay, I'll
- 4:50see you later. I'm going to need in this corner, okay, Nick,
- 4:54I'll be saying, Hey, look at that car coming up the street,
- 4:58would you? Hey? Nick, wats out that cars? Hell?
- 5:00It right out up? Nick? Oh? Did he hit you? Nick?
- 5:08Are you all right? Yeah? I'm all right? Oh gee,
- 5:11that was close. It almost seemed like whoever was driving that car did that
- 5:15on purpose. It wouldn't be at all surprised, Kebby. I think somebody
- 5:17is interested in preventing me from keep you my appointment. Hey, look,
- 5:19maybe I better stay with you. Nick. Oh, I've got something else
- 5:23we do, Kebby. I got the number in that car, hopped onto
- 5:25the license view and find out who it belongs to. It then wait for
- 5:27me at the office. Oh, Nick, Hi, Sorry, I'm so
- 5:39hello John. I've been on this corner waiting for you for twenty minutes.
- 5:42Where have you been trying to get here without anyone seeing me? While the
- 5:45mystery? What's up? Waiting to Nick? Yeah? Get back in the
- 5:49store a really quick. Don't let him see us. Who was that somebody
- 5:57trailing you? I don't know. I never saw him before. Then?
- 5:59Why do I dot you? You haven't done anything wrong? Have you,
- 6:02No, Nick, absolutely nothing. Now listen, I don't want the police
- 6:06in on this just yet if I can help it. Thanking for him like
- 6:10mine can't stand any unnecessary notoriety. Yes, I know, John, But
- 6:14what just all about? Well, let me explain. I wanted to tell
- 6:16you out here where I can be sure no one will hear us. You
- 6:19see, Nick, several days ago, I discovered there's a serious shortage on
- 6:23our books. Somebody has been taking money from the accounts, and I'm most
- 6:27almost sure I know who it is. I've called him me to get my
- 6:30four partners. They're upstairs my office waiting for me right now to have a
- 6:33showdown before the stockholders find out. That's why I ask you to come over
- 6:36here. Nick. You may have to make an arrest to night or you
- 6:40don't want a detective John, you want a cat? No? No,
- 6:42no, you're wrong, Nick. I want you please come along. Oh,
- 6:46perhaps you get a way down the lobby while I go up and see
- 6:47if everything's all right. That is safe for you to No, No,
- 6:50Nick, there's no need for that. All I want to be in on
- 6:53the showdown. Come on anything you say, and if you really feel that
- 6:57something dangerous is in the wind to think I should grow up there first,
- 7:00look around and if everything's okay, let you know. No, No,
- 7:01I want to go up now and get it up with. Well you insist
- 7:05I do. Nick. Oh, I know it's pretty late, but I
- 7:09waited purposely till the offices were closed to avoid any publicity. This whole business
- 7:13requires the greatest secrecy of Oh, this is our phone, Nick, after
- 7:27you, John, Well, thank you? Kind of dark in this hallway,
- 7:30isn't it? Yes? The lighting isn't any too good here? But
- 7:35John, Johnny, you hurt bad? What's happened? Why isn't John quiet?
- 7:46Place quiet? Gentlemen? John Hamil is dead. John Hammier is dead.
- 7:51But that's terrible, terrible. How did it happen? That's what I
- 7:54want to know. You seem to know him. Who are you? I
- 7:57could ask you the same question, who are you? I'm Nick Carter,
- 8:00Nick Carter, the detective. Yes, oh well, my name's Tom Burdick.
- 8:03I'm one of Hamill's partners. And these are the others, mister Carter,
- 8:07I'm Amil Garrick, and miss Arthur Nelson and Alan carr Do you do
- 8:09mister Carter? Your cornish huh, yes, mister Carter, what do you
- 8:13know about this? Nothing? Nothing, I was in my office all the
- 8:16time. Oh that's not true, Cornish. I saw you go out in
- 8:20the hall just a few seconds before Hamilver was shot at right. Cornish,
- 8:22Yes, I did go out for a moment, but when the shot was
- 8:26fired, I was back in my office. But why question me? I
- 8:28don't to ask Burdick where he was? A Nelson Mcatrick. Well, I
- 8:31can easily explain where mister Nelson and I were. We were both together in
- 8:33my office the prying some papers for the night's meeting. That's right, mister
- 8:37Carter, I was with mister Garrick. Which of you men belong to?
- 8:39Which office? Where you can see the layout yourself? Mister Carter? They
- 8:43all open office L shaped. Carter first comes Nelson's office, then verdicts they're
- 8:48on the long leg of the L and on the corner at the end is
- 8:50Cornish's office directly in line with the Carter to the elevator, and Garrick's office
- 8:54is around the corner on the short leg of the L. That's right,
- 8:58ms out of sight of the elevator completely, isn't it sure? You can't
- 9:01even see the corridor from my office. So I see, then, Cornish,
- 9:05your office is the only one which faces the corridor. I'd like to
- 9:09have a look at it all right this way, this is my office,
- 9:16mister Catter, m peculiarity. Eh, let's see. Well, what are
- 9:24we here? In this umbrella? Stand a gun and it's been fired very
- 9:31recently, I should say, gentlemen, this was the murder weapon. That's
- 9:35mister Cornish's umbrella. Stand How you know about this? Cornish? I don't
- 9:39know anything about it, but that gun belongs to mister Cornish. That's right,
- 9:41mister Carter. I've seen it in his desk many times. I recognize
- 9:46that fancy handle. See what are you fellows trying to do? Sure,
- 9:50it's my gun, but I haven't seen it for three days. Someone stole
- 9:52it on my disk, mister Carter. Why didn't you report it to the
- 9:54police Because I didn't carry a permit for it. I I was afraid of
- 10:00getting in trouble. Cornish. I regret that. Appearances they're against you,
- 10:03right, I'll get turn you over to the police. You won't turn me
- 10:05off. The police have no lights. Turn those lights on? Some gaing
- 10:11the hall stop punishing, stop rushing. But you see, Patsy, I
- 10:28was right with Himmel when he was murdered. What I can't figure out was
- 10:31how he was shot when there was no one else in the hall. Willis.
- 10:33And here's something else. I heard, only one shot tired. My
- 10:35Cornish's gun had three empty shells. And the top of all off, here's
- 10:39the bullet that killed Hammel corner. Give it to me. Notice how it's
- 10:41all banged up? Yes, how did that happen? I wish I knew,
- 10:45Patsy. If I knew the answer to that, I think I knew
- 10:46the answer to this whole case. We find Cornish, I'll get it.
- 10:50Hello, Yes, this is Nick Karta. This is Allan Cornish. I
- 10:56suppose I'm a fool for calling what Conna, But I need help. I'm
- 11:00desperate and I can't go to the police. You've got to help me prove
- 11:03I didn't kill Hell. I had to run away, Cornish because I was
- 11:05scared. Thanky for me. You didn't hit me. I don't worry,
- 11:09Cornish. If I had really wanted to hit you, I would have Where
- 11:11are you now, I'll tell you, But you've got to promise to come
- 11:13alone. If you don't tell anything, I'll promise you is that I won't
- 11:16do anything to I have to have talk to you. I want you address
- 11:18eighteen thirteen Oak Street. Come on over, I'll be waiting for you.
- 11:22Okay, sit tight, I'll be there. You mean we'll be there.
- 11:26I'm sick of sitting around here. I'm going with you. Eighteen thirteen Oak
- 11:41Street. This is it, Betsy. Gosh, what a creepy looking place.
- 11:46Certainly not very attractive. Oh, come on, let's go in.
- 11:58Maybe he's not here? Said it be here? Wonder if well the door's
- 12:05open? Should we go in? We can't keep our date to the corner?
- 12:09You don't, gosh, it's dark in here, Nick, Do you
- 12:15suppose it could be a trap? Never can be quite sure, Patsy.
- 12:20Here's the door, stand behind me. Do you see anything in there?
- 12:24Nick? Well, I got my flashlight. Nope, looks deserted. I'll
- 12:31come on. Let's try another room. Jesus please gives me the jitters.
- 12:35Practically deserted. Maybe he's in here. Stand back, Betsy, No,
- 12:43nothing in there. Maybe he got scared after he called you and slipped away.
- 12:48I soon find out. There's another door over there. Look Nick,
- 13:00is that Yes, he's hanged himself. Oh Neck, I don't know why
- 13:18he came back to the office again tonight. Cornish is dead. I guess
- 13:22that closes the case. That's I'm not satisfied. When I talked to him
- 13:26on the phone, he certainly didn't sound like a man who was going to
- 13:28kill himself. When a man wants to prove himself innocent, he doesn't commit
- 13:31suicide. Now, Patsy, there's something about that hanging that's bothering me,
- 13:37and I can't lay my finger on it. You probably figured that was the
- 13:39best way out. Kick over the chair and end it all. Petsy,
- 13:43remind me to give you a raise? And what did I do? I
- 13:46got it. Look, Patsy Cornish was a short man. What Patsy Cornish
- 13:50couldn't have hanged himself? Why not? Don't you remember, Patsy The only
- 13:54furniture in that room was a bed, and Cornish was so short he never
- 13:56could read that noose from the bed where it was. Of course, Nick,
- 13:58the bed was on the other side of the room. That's sick Cornish
- 14:01was murdered. She eliminates him as a suspect. I agree he was killed
- 14:05by the same man who killed Hamil. But Nick, who I knew?
- 14:09Nick? Hi pantsy? Hell, that isn't the minting lane, Scubby?
- 14:11You find out anything about that car that Needla ran me down this afternoon?
- 14:15Oh? You bet? Nick? Good? But what a time I've been
- 14:16having laitly you hear what I have to tell you. I had to get
- 14:18the licensemissioner out of bed to get it, but oh boy, it was
- 14:22worth it. Hey, you know who that car belongs to? Tom Birdie,
- 14:24Hamil's parkner. Go to boy, Scubby. You get his addressed too,
- 14:28Yeah, some deserted neck of the woods out on Long Island. I
- 14:31got the address here somewhere. Fine, come on, Scubby, You and
- 14:33I going to pay him a visit. You know, Scubby. The more
- 14:46I think of it, the more it looks as if Tom Burdick might be
- 14:50mixed up in this some way. Oh I hope so, Nick. Otherwise
- 14:52we're using up a lot of gas in this Gilapia mind for nothing. Hey,
- 14:58have you noticed anything funny? Nick? You mean that car that's been
- 15:01trailing us for the last few minutes, that's it? What do you make
- 15:03of it? Nick? I don't know, Scubby, and I think we'll
- 15:07be finding out quickly enough the robe we're taking us. Better step on it.
- 15:11Okay, Nick, here we go. How are we doing? That's
- 15:18a good Scubby. They're still gaining on us. You get you any more
- 15:20gas, I'll try there. They still coming up, Yes, scubby and
- 15:28fast. That's stubby. They're shooting at us. You're telling me watch it,
- 15:33we're gonna come. Well, I've done all I can, Nick.
- 15:35This old bus won't go any faster. Let's try and know strick, Scubby,
- 15:37and you get close to us, slam on your brakes and full over
- 15:39to the side of the road. Yeah, they won't be expecting that.
- 15:41I may throw them completely off balance and spoil our aim. Okay, Nick,
- 15:45you say when now? Hell over? Oh boy, that was a
- 15:58close one. Hey you all right? Nick? Yeah, Well we won't
- 16:03see them anymore for a while yet, going scubby, we got to make
- 16:06up for lost time. Oh, Nick, I've got to hand it to
- 16:19you. You have the darnest way of getting into a cellar. We had
- 16:23to get into word ex house. Somehow, this cellar, with us quick
- 16:26entrance from the garage, looked like the safe way, especially with those two
- 16:30vicious looking dogs posted at both the front and back doors to the house.
- 16:33Are they sure? We're big ones too? I'd hate to meet one of
- 16:36them. Hey, where do you think this is going to lead us to?
- 16:40Nick? We should find a stairway going upstairs. Le's I'm very much
- 16:42mistaken. Yeah, yeah, here's one. All right, let's go up.
- 16:48Quite careful, all right, Nick, you lead the way. I'm
- 16:51with you. Here's the door. I hope it's open. No, turn
- 17:00it, it's locked. I'll soon fix that. There. Oh, it's
- 17:07Kebby. Come up. Oh wait, wait, wait, someone's coming to
- 17:11the room. Skebby get back. We can hear through the crack of the
- 17:14door. I'll leave it open a little. Oh, missus Berdick, I'm
- 17:17certainly glad you called me up. I'm only too happy to be here at
- 17:19a time like this. After all, we are practically neighbors, aren't we.
- 17:23Oh? I just had to talk to someone, mister Gerrick. I'm
- 17:26so worried about Tom. Those horrible things that have been happening at the office.
- 17:30What do you make of all this? Well, I wouldn't worry about
- 17:33it too much, missus Burdick. Tom can take care of himself if he
- 17:37has to. What do you mean mister Krick. No, nothing, nothing,
- 17:40but he has been acting rather strangely lately, That's just it. I'm
- 17:44so worried. I haven't seen or heard from him all day. He's never
- 17:48been so late coming home from the office. It's after eleven. Oh,
- 17:51there's really nothing to worry about, Missus Burdick, even in a case like
- 17:53this. Of course, it looks very peculiar for Tom to be missing his
- 17:57way, especially at this particular time. You don't think Tom had anything to
- 18:03do with all this sort of well, Missus Burdick, I like Tom very
- 18:06much. I would hate to think that Tom had anything to do with this
- 18:10murder. Of course, Kebby, we don't seem to be learning much this
- 18:14way. Might as well go in and let him know we're here. Sure,
- 18:15Nick, good evening, mister Gatt. Why mister Carter, what are
- 18:19you doing here? I just came along with one of my assistants, Scubby
- 18:22Wilson, to talk to mister Burdick. We came in this way because we
- 18:26didn't want to disturb the dogs. Really, who are you, oh,
- 18:30missus Burdick. This is mister Nick Carter. He's in charge of investigating Hamill's
- 18:34death. Mister Carter the detective. Some thing's happened to Tom, has it?
- 18:38I don't believe so, Missus Burdick. I just want to ask him
- 18:41a few questions when he arrives. Maybe that's why Tom hasn't come home.
- 18:45Maybe he's afraid. Maybe that's he Now wait, wait, I'll go look
- 18:48out the window to see if that's his car, Carter. I must warn
- 18:52you to be careful. Berdick's a dangerous man, Tom, Tom Nick Carter's
- 18:57here places, Missus Burdick. I'm away in that window. See you won't
- 19:00too many go that way, mister Bertick. How me please? That's just
- 19:03car, mister Connor. Look he's getting away. Let's get after him.
- 19:06Oh cry, I'll go with your Connor. Hurry. I want to know
- 19:07why you run you away? You want to hear my name. I hope
- 19:19this car youwers stays on the road. Credit. Don't worry about it,
- 19:22mister Greg honor right. I didn't want to say too much in front of
- 19:25Missus Berdie, but we've all been afraid of Bertie. All right, all
- 19:26right, let's gubby, let's keep you put on that throttle and keep after
- 19:30him. Oh boy, we sure made that one. On two wheels.
- 19:36Nick, I'm pushing this crate as fast as you'll go, but we don't
- 19:37seem to be getting any closer. And Carl, Bertie, since sure stepped
- 19:41long. Hang on and don't lose him. I'll be satisfied. And watch
- 19:44it. We're coming to a railroad crossing, so I see, well,
- 19:47maybe we can head him off now. If Berdick tries to beat that limited
- 19:49to the crossing, he's crazy. But Kyler, I think he's going to
- 19:55try to make him. You can't do it. He'll be killed. Oh,
- 20:11Nick, that nurse that just came out of the operating room is signaling
- 20:15you. She wants me to go into Bertie. You wait for me here
- 20:18scy okay, Nick, Oh Berdie Reddy hear me? Yes, Carter,
- 20:33I can hear you. Carter, I'm dang man. Yes, I know.
- 20:41I swear to you. I didn't kill Hamel or Cornish. And why
- 20:45did you try to run me down with your car this afternoon? Carter?
- 20:48I didn't do that. Oh, I know? Is it? For several
- 20:53hours this afternoon my car was seriously missing. Yeah. I didn't find it
- 21:06again until I start down this evening. Bertie, why did you run away
- 21:14from your home tonight, and your wife told you we were there. How
- 21:17about the securities we found on you after the wreck? Yeah, wasn't you?
- 21:22It was securities? I so, yes? Why did you take that
- 21:33so I couldn't keep him from stealing them? Ready? Who? Ready?
- 21:41Who's he? Go on? Office? But drawing desk? Something will lead
- 21:53you to? Yes, Bertick, who's the murderer? Oh Bredick? Oh,
- 22:08poor Chap, you've spoken sooner. You might have lived longer. Nick,
- 22:29How Nick? I got here as quick as I could. Have you
- 22:30found anything? Yet? I think so? Scobby Burdick wasn'tlying to me.
- 22:34I found this in the bottom drawer of the desk in the front office.
- 22:37Here a book. Well is that what Berdick meant? Just look at that
- 22:41title? Studies of various angles of bullets in flight? Also, what,
- 22:47Nick, Scubby, that's the way Hammer was killed. It all adds up
- 22:49perfectly. Now I know why I heard only one shot when I found three
- 22:52empty shells and the murder weapon. Three shots were fired, but two of
- 22:56them were fired at a different time from the third. Well, you know
- 23:00we're the other two bullets on? I do follow me out in the hall
- 23:03and I'll show you. Yeah, you see, Scubby. As soon as
- 23:04I found that book in the flight of bullets, I did a bit of
- 23:07looking around and I finally found them, or are they in the office here?
- 23:11No, Scubby, in the corridor right over there, in that dark
- 23:14corner, embedded in the wall beside the elevator shaft, about a half a
- 23:17dozen feet from where Hamil was killed. Oh what are they doing over there,
- 23:19Scubby? This was a very ingenious crime. And if you watch carefully,
- 23:22i'll show you just how ingenius it really was. How you noticed that
- 23:26Cornish's office is the only one facing the corridor leading from the elevator. Yeah,
- 23:30so when in order to shoot someone coming down the hall, the murderer,
- 23:34if we were in any office, but Cornishes would have to step from
- 23:37his office out into this corridor and be seen right. Yea, all right,
- 23:41But our murderer was very clever. I got the answer when I located
- 23:45the book, and when I found these embedded in the wall beside the elevator
- 23:48shaft, the two missing bullets right. Oh hey, they're all banged up
- 23:52precisely, just like the murder bullet. And that's what gave me the answer.
- 23:55You see, Scubby, the murderer never left his office. He stood
- 23:57inside the front office, the one around the corner on the lower leg of
- 24:00the L shaped corridor, and aimed at that steel pillar built into the wall
- 24:03over there. When the bullet hit the steel face of the pillar, it
- 24:07was deflected into Hammel's lungs. Look here, you see these marks in the
- 24:11face of the pillar here where? Yeah, yeah, yeah, those are
- 24:15the bullet marks. Oh well, gosh, Nick, that's fantastic. Here
- 24:19are you sure you're right? Positive? Don't you see? Scubby? That
- 24:22explains the other two shots that were fired. They weren't fired at Hamel,
- 24:26and they weren't fired at the time the murder was committed. They were practice
- 24:29shots used by the murderer to be sure he had the correct angle from which
- 24:32to shoot Hammel. Gosh, Nick, I've certainly got a hand it to
- 24:34you. That's but we still have to get the murderer. But how and
- 24:37who is it? I rather think that if we step back in the office
- 24:41and wait, we'll find out soon enough, Scubby, Oh what do you
- 24:44mean, Nick? I mean that whoever it is will be in this office
- 24:47within the next few minutes. Because after my discoveries, I made a couple
- 24:49of phone calls, and I invited the two remaining partners to meet me here
- 24:53sh here come someone now, Nomen Oh, hello, Gg. I got
- 24:59your phone call and I got here as fast as I could. Eric.
- 25:03Have you seen this book before, studies of various angles of bullets in flight?
- 25:07Why? Yes, now that I think of it, I think I
- 25:11have as it belonged to you. No, it doesn't, but I remember
- 25:14that one day when I was with mister Nelson, he stopped in front of
- 25:17a bookshop and looked at it rather closely, now that I think of it,
- 25:21Yes, I'm sure it was Nelson. Very interesting. I'll tell me,
- 25:25mister Gerrick, when the murder was committed. Are you positive that you
- 25:27and mister Nelson were in this office together? That's right, mister Carter.
- 25:32And you show me exactly where each of you stood at the time the shot
- 25:33was fired. Let me see. I was here facing the window, and
- 25:40Nelson was well standing right about here for the door. M m I see.
- 25:45Did you notice in which direction he was facing at the time, Yes,
- 25:47I remember this way, facing the garder. In other words, the
- 25:51way he was standing you could see him only in profile. That's right.
- 25:55There's no question. But that's holf was done. Scubby. The murderer planted
- 25:57himself in this office so that he could establish a strong alibi. He then
- 26:00took the gun from his pocket, unseen by the other person in the room,
- 26:03who could see him only in profile, and then fired it at that
- 26:07steel pillar. Then, as he ran into the corridor with arrest after Hamil
- 26:11was dead, he dropped the gun into the umbrellas and in front of Cornish's
- 26:12office. But Carter, do you mean that Nelson is the one? Gentlemen,
- 26:17did I hear my name mentioned? Yes, Nelson, you did.
- 26:19Why did you kill Hamel and Cornish? Please? Garret, don't be ridiculous?
- 26:22Oh, Nelson, does this book looked familiar to you? Eh?
- 26:26This book? Oh? No, I can't say that it does. You're
- 26:30sure you've never seen this book before, now that you mention it. I
- 26:33may have glanced at it in a bookshop at one time or another, But
- 26:37then I look over a lot of books I like to browse. I see,
- 26:44Nelson, see how you approve of this story of Hamil's murder. Yes,
- 26:48the killer knew of Cornish's criminal record, and he figured it could embezzle
- 26:52some of the firm's money and printed on an innocent man. Then, when
- 26:55he found out that Hamil was becoming suspicious and was having the account checked,
- 26:59he became panicky and afraid that it might not work out the way he had
- 27:02planned, so he decided to kill Hammel. Then, when he happened to
- 27:06overhear Hamil's conversation with me or with the telephone, he hurriedly borrowed Burdick's car
- 27:10without Burdick's knowledge and try to get rid of me. That's an interesting way
- 27:12out, mister Carter. Have you also a theory as to who the killer
- 27:17is? I have in the process of elimination. It has to be either
- 27:22you or mister Garrick, or an unknown. And I've already proved that I
- 27:26didn't do it. It must have been an unknown, then, mister Carter,
- 27:29I certainly didn't kill hammeler I had nothing to do with the murder,
- 27:32and the shot was fired. I was right here in this room with mister
- 27:34Garrick. He can testify to that he has already, mister Nelson. In
- 27:37fact, mister Carter, I was standing right here facing the window when the
- 27:41shot was fired. Oh no, that's where I was. Mister Carter standing
- 27:44there at the window. Please, Garrick, Please, you don't have to
- 27:48argue about it. I know who was at the window, and I know
- 27:52who fired the fatal shot. Scuby, take a look at the fly leaf
- 27:56of this book. What are they? Nick? He looked like the scribbles
- 28:00that some guys drowingly have nothing else to do. Oh doodles, they call
- 28:03him exactly. When I was looking through the various officers, I found some
- 28:07papers with these same doodling marks on them in one of the disks. And
- 28:11these marks were made by the murderer Gerk. I arrested you, mascubby,
- 28:22pick up the pieces. Oh boy, there's the murderer Garrick. He's also
- 28:26the man who tried to murder you and me last night. And they rode
- 28:29to Bertick's home. Yes, He'scubby. Berdick has his suspicions about Gerrick.
- 28:33That's why we found those securities on him. He took them so that they
- 28:37wouldn't founder Gerrek's hands. He suddenly found out that Grek was an unscrupulous crook,
- 28:41and that was the reason he ran. When Missus Burdick called him.
- 28:44He saw Garrick at the window and it was afraid of him. Well,
- 28:47Lock, I must say he had me fooled. But he said that Nelson
- 28:48was standing at the door of the office here when he was really there himself,
- 28:52yes, and telling us who was in this office. That clever murderer
- 28:55just reversed the positions in which he and mister Nelson were standing when the murder
- 28:57was committed. Once I saw the marks on that fly leaf, I knew
- 29:02who stood where, and that's why I had Nelson come up here to force
- 29:06Garrick's hand. Well, Nick, one weighs as good as another as long
- 29:08as you get results, and you always seem to do that. So you
- 29:27finally decided to come back, did you? Betsy? It's all over?
- 29:32Well, I think you can go home now. Wh I'm mister Carter.
- 29:34Are you sure you can spare me? Why not? You've been so busy
- 29:38on this case all night, mister Carter, you may not have noticed that
- 29:41it is now a new day and the good secretary is always on the job.
- 29:45The first thing in the morning, Shall I take a letter in,
- 29:48mister Carter? This was another strange experience of Nick Carter, master detective called
- 30:07an angle on murder or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Mutilated Bullet,
- 30:11another of the curious adventures of Nick Carter, which are brought to you by
- 30:15W R. Mutual And Now, Nick, what's next week's story all about?
- 30:19While on this case was first brought to me, it seems a routine
- 30:22and none interesting that I practically turned it down. But it was far from
- 30:26routine once you got into it, wasn't it, Nick, Yes, indeed
- 30:29so far from it that I almost got myself bumped off investigating it. It's
- 30:33really the story of a man who thought he was so much cleverer than Nick
- 30:36that he could outwit him every time. I don't suppose he got away with
- 30:38it. No, he found he wasn't really so clever after all. Like
- 30:42practically every criminal I ever met, he gave himself away by being too clever.
- 30:48It sounds like an interesting tale, Nick, not only interesting but downright
- 30:52exciting. But more of that next week. So long, so long,
- 30:56and so long to you, Nick and Patsy. The strange adventure you've just
- 31:00heard. Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choate,
- 31:04and Scubby by John Kin. The story was written for Nick Carter by George
- 31:08Gordon. Original music was played by Lew White. The entire production was under
- 31:12the direction of Jock McGregor. Next week, listen to another curious experience of
- 31:29Nick Carter entitled Anybody on the Slap Carnick Carter and the Mystery of a Missing
- 31:34Husband. This story is a copyrighted feature of Street and Smith Publications, Incorporated.
- 31:45Beginning Wednesday, November three, the Return of Nick Carter, which is
- 31:48produced in the studios a w R, will be broadcast over most of these
- 31:52stations on Wednesday evenings at eight thirty Eastern wartime. Remember the New Time Wednesday's
- 31:56at eight thirty eastern wartime. Beginning Wednesday, Novsnumber third, this is mutual
- 32:19welcome back. Well, another great Nick's hard story. And I love the
- 32:25setups here. They're very unique, some of the attractive shows while they're well
- 32:31performed. You have an idea. I've kind of heard this all before,
- 32:37but Nick Carter, I think there's definitely some great originality, particular in these
- 32:42early forties programs. All right, Well, I told you i'd tell you
- 32:45a little bit about Helen Choate, and I was blessed to be able to
- 32:52come up with an article from the Connecticut post because she actually lived to the
- 32:59Ripe old A one hundred and two from nineteen oh seven to twenty ten.
- 33:05In our earlier years, she really she started out in soap operas in the
- 33:09thirties. She had the lead the role of Bunny Wilson in Pretty Kitty Kelly,
- 33:16and then just a lot of soaps were the main things that she was
- 33:23credited for, but she transitioned into other roles. She translated Russian plays and
- 33:31contributed to a variety of books. Perhaps her biggest claim to fame was that
- 33:38she actually helped Alex Haley on editing Roots and also while Haley was kind of
- 33:50struggling with economically, she helped give a loan of money give him some small
- 33:55jobs so that he could get that book published, And of course became that
- 34:00great television special and they had one story in here told by her friend Michael
- 34:08Manelo. Once Choate landed a big radio role, but she knew another girl
- 34:14who had auditioned for it too. This is from the Connecticut Post. The
- 34:16other actors had two children and was down on her look. So Choate approach
- 34:22the directors and asked them to give it her to her instead because she needed
- 34:25it more again, just a very classy woman, and what you know from
- 34:32everything we read, which wasn't a whole lot, just a very wonderful person.
- 34:38She dropped out of college to pursue a radio career, and when on
- 34:49her one hundredth birthday she actually did get an honorary degree from the college because
- 34:57clearly had learned a lot through life experience that was really just vital, So
- 35:04really an amazing person. Helen's show. All right, Well, now we
- 35:09turn to listener comments and feedback. Brian emails in. I know you get
- 35:15occasional questions and criticism about your comments before and after each show, and about
- 35:20your delivery and accent. Much of it seems well intentioned, some not.
- 35:24I have only one request, don't change. I love to hear those magical
- 35:28words at the beginning of each podcast. Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old
- 35:32Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Graham.
- 35:36Your openings and closings, delivered in your own unique style, are almost enjoyables
- 35:39the old time radio programs keeping keep them coming. A long time listener,
- 35:45Well, Brian, Well, thanks so much, Brian, and truly appreciate
- 35:50it. Of course, we the only exception, of course, has been
- 35:52those few episodes. I think we did a couple from callis Spell, and
- 35:57if you listen back in the archives you may find one from even when Amucka
- 36:01Nevada and Mambe one or two from Reno. Well that was on the Old
- 36:06Time Dragon. It on the win ofmcking Rena, I'm sure. But on
- 36:09the accent front, my brother was actually going through a a course for learning
- 36:24dialect written by someone in New York City and they said that the accent that
- 36:31he assumed to a family accent was Midwestern American farm I think was the accent.
- 36:42I'm not certain whether I fit into that mold or I break that mold
- 36:45in my radio voice, but there you go. So that's an update on
- 36:50accent. Lese comments with her donation, no need to send me a premium
- 36:54York Sonora's voice is more than enough for me. It's the one thing I
- 37:00always listen to every day. Your fan lease in DC, Well, thanks
- 37:02so much, Lese. Then we have this email from Rachel, thank you
- 37:07so much for the Johnny Dollar podcast. Me and my husband really enjoy them,
- 37:15and our four month old really gets excited when she hears the intro music.
- 37:19When me and my husband were dating, we used to listen to Johnny
- 37:22Dollar radio shows together over the phone. It's really been great to get to
- 37:25listen to some new ones and old ones that give us fond memories. Thanks
- 37:30so much, Rachel, glad to facilitate that. Finally, a question from
- 37:37Albi regarding let George do It. Anyone know if the cross over episode from
- 37:43September nineteen forty seven, Sam Spade Visits George is in existence? Thanks?
- 37:50Well, I'll be with the proviso that many episodes are in existence but not
- 37:54in circulation because they're being held by collectors for whatever reason. I'm not aware
- 38:02of that a copy of that in existence, and without that, it's kind
- 38:09of hard to say, you know what exactly the episode was about. Was
- 38:15it truly a du joure crossover where Howard Duff came and the character Sam Spade
- 38:21appeared, or was it some sort some sort of comedy or rip on it?
- 38:31Or did Howard Duff appear but not actually a Spade. So I definitely
- 38:37would love to him find out what was in this episode, or at least
- 38:40get hold of the script. Unfortunately hasn't happened yet, but we'll definitely keep
- 38:46an eye out for it. All right, Well, that will do it
- 38:51for today's episode of Nick Carter. Join us back here tomorrow. We're going
- 38:57to go ahead and wrap up both the Planned Agent Matter and Crime for King
- 39:02on the Carter Brown Mysteries, So be sure and be listening. Then be
- 39:07back next Thursday with another episode of Nick Carter. In the meanwhile, send
