- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Carlin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Tech
- 0:17presented by C Geek. This is Episode 414.
- 0:20I'll be your host Kyle Cord. And I'm here with my Co host
- 0:23Nate Reyes night. That's me playing the guitar.
- 0:36If you didn't know, yeah, so you're welcome for that.
- 0:41For blessing your ears with my talent.
- 0:44I wish. Yeah.
- 0:45He just never played an instrument.
- 0:46Do you Have you ever played one? I tried learning guitar one
- 0:50time. It didn't.
- 0:50I tried for like a week. Didn't last.
- 0:54Yeah, it's weird. You're either an athlete or or a
- 0:57musician. Rarely do you get both.
- 0:59But that's that's what's crazy about that intro is you just hit
- 1:03me up one day. You're like, yo, I was down in
- 1:04my garage. I just ripped this off real
- 1:07quick. I'm sending you the file.
- 1:09One take, one take. And I said wow, I gotta use that
- 1:13for something. And the intro was born, didn't
- 1:18need any payment for it. I was like, you know, it's all
- 1:22good. The intro was born and
- 1:24unbeknownst to Nate, a musical career was born.
- 1:26Yeah, goes on for tomorrow. Oh, oh, all right.
- 1:32Opposite ends the spectrum there.
- 1:33But I'll Yeah, yeah, I'll I'll choose to believe you go on tour
- 1:36tomorrow. Can somebody free our guy Joey
- 1:41Votto. I can't take it anymore with
- 1:44this with this, I'll say it. Depressing version of a once
- 1:53happy man. These videos that he keeps
- 1:57posting drive, driving through a car wash, taking a cooking
- 2:02class, he was doing laundry or something the other day.
- 2:08He goes, this isn't spring training, this isn't spring
- 2:11training, this isn't spring training.
- 2:13Can we please get our guy to spring training?
- 2:16No, he should have retired. What?
- 2:18I mean, he didn't on him. He didn't pop out.
- 2:22So, So what the first baseman until, like last weekend for the
- 2:27first time in his career or something like that.
- 2:30Yeah, I know that was weird. I think that's deserving of a
- 2:32contract, if nothing else, just that, just that alone.
- 2:37But either somebody sign him or he needs to retire because this,
- 2:44this campaign that he's he's on right now.
- 2:47I can't take it anymore. Yeah.
- 2:50I feel for the guy, but also let's let's make something
- 2:53happen. I I'm, I think a lot of these
- 2:57teams are probably just this is a problem and and this is what
- 3:00we talked about last week, like I wouldn't mind a nice little
- 3:04free agency deadline situation. I don't know man.
- 3:12I think maybe teams are just going to wait it out see what
- 3:16spring training looks like for a week or two.
- 3:20See, I think you like you know what Joey Votto is like you know
- 3:22what you're getting. So it's like hey let's feel this
- 3:25out, you know, do we have anything going on here If not
- 3:30adamant I I can I can think of some rosters that could benefit
- 3:36from a Mr. Joey Votto. So.
- 3:40There's there's maybe 10 rosters that absolutely have no
- 3:50interest. Don't need them.
- 3:52They're they're beyond signing Joey Votto and there's probably
- 3:56a handful that would maybe be interested but can't because of
- 4:03roster situations. But then the rest.
- 4:06You're telling me nobody could use a Joey Votto?
- 4:08Come on, even just for a year? Put him on some.
- 4:13Posters. It's weird how he went from
- 4:14like, not like 0 social media ever up until like two years
- 4:20ago. And then he just dabbled in the
- 4:25Instagram or Twitter and now look at him.
- 4:27The guy's documenting his entire life.
- 4:32Do you think here, here's a question?
- 4:34Do you think he'd be interested in joining our fantasy league if
- 4:37he ends up not playing this year?
- 4:39I think it's worth an offer. Should I reach out?
- 4:42We should. Dig up his e-mail somewhere.
- 4:48Well, you said it. And I agree that dude's never
- 4:51been more active on social media than right now.
- 4:54That's fair. I just hit him up.
- 4:56Hit him up on that square. Joey, come on, I.
- 4:59Don't hate to. Actually, you know what?
- 5:01Let me see right now. Let me.
- 5:02Do it right now. Let me see if I can message him.
- 5:04He may have one of those accounts where you can't.
- 5:07Hold on. Let me see.
- 5:10No. Nope.
- 5:11Not Joey Potto. Joey Potto Oh, I can message
- 5:17him. Joey Votto is clearly occupied.
- 5:20I don't think he'd want to join the league.
- 5:26I went to our messages and it was tagged the post from back on
- 5:30April 7th, 2022. Joey Votto just popped out to
- 5:34the pitcher for the first time ever over 8000 plate
- 5:38appearances. Anyway, that's.
- 5:41Such a sick stat. That's so weird.
- 5:43That's such a weird 6 stat. How should I?
- 5:48What should I? How should I phrase this, Joey?
- 5:57It's a good. Start.
- 5:58It's a good start. Yeah.
- 6:00Professional, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:02I don't hate it. It's directed Joey.
- 6:10If no team makes the obviously correct choice to sign you, we
- 6:25have a spot in our fantasy league with your name on it.
- 6:36Just ask him to be the third guy and on.
- 6:38Let's just bring him on as the third host.
- 6:41Just join the pod. PS You.
- 6:51Can also come on to the podcast. We're looking for a third host.
- 6:56There it is. For the podcast, Kyle Perfect.
- 7:13Just keep it in mind. All right.
- 7:19Do you think he's actually bald or is he one of those guys that,
- 7:22like, chooses to do that? Little both I.
- 7:27Don't think he needs to. Like you if you just put like a
- 7:30little bit of work into it. I know you just shaved it all
- 7:33off, but. I could probably save it if I
- 7:35wanted to. You could.
- 7:36Save it. You could salvage it.
- 7:37They got, they got stuff for that, but it's probably a little
- 7:40bit of both. I got nothing.
- 7:49Cody Bellinger, let's think of a transition.
- 7:52Cody Bellinger. Look, this three-year $80
- 8:03million deal, people keep saying, well it's a one year
- 8:08deal. It's a one year deal because it
- 8:10has two. It has opt out of after the
- 8:12first and second years. Can I be honest with you right
- 8:15here off the top? Off the rip.
- 8:19Right off the rip, I know in seasons past I've I've predicted
- 8:28a Cody Bellinger comeback and we got that Cody Bellinger
- 8:31comeback. But I'm gonna go ahead and make
- 8:37a prediction right here, right now.
- 8:38Forget the hot takes and predictions episode coming your
- 8:41way next month. I feel something steamy coming.
- 8:44Cody Bellinger staying put in Chicago because he's not going
- 8:50to be able to test the market with the way that his his next
- 8:54couple seasons unfold. He's not going to have a choice.
- 8:57He's going to be staying put and it blows my mind.
- 9:02This guy signed for three years 80 million that that's I could
- 9:06do with or without. I I don't care as much about
- 9:08that. But you go back rewind a week
- 9:11ago MLB Trade Rumors had Cody Bellinger signing for for 12
- 9:20years 264,000,000. Now I know that prediction came
- 9:23out the weeks months ago as we transitioned into the free
- 9:29agency period, but that's that's where it was at.
- 9:34I don't think if we were looking at this situation with with even
- 9:37the slightest hint of common sense that we're looking at that
- 9:42going, yeah, that's that's that's likely, that's doable for
- 9:46a guy like Cody Bellinger, one of the most inconsistent guys
- 9:49we've seen in years past. Yeah, that's wild.
- 9:52I don't, no, you're not getting 12 years.
- 9:56Sorry. I I think that was the biggest
- 9:58issue. That's probably the biggest
- 10:00issue why this took so long. Him and his camp were probably
- 10:05sitting around expecting at least like an 8 year deal.
- 10:10We OK. Let me ask you this.
- 10:12We've been, we've been covering Cody since, well, I say Cody.
- 10:17We've been covering the league since before Cody's MVP season,
- 10:23'cause that was 2019, if I believe, sure.
- 10:28Or maybe was it 2018? No, 2019, I believe.
- 10:32Given what we've seen since, knowing what we know about Cody,
- 10:37the way he's played, the consistency, the inconsistency,
- 10:41how many years would you have given him?
- 10:43Like what's the Max number of years you would have given him?
- 10:47He got three, he's 28 this year. I think it's more about the AAV
- 11:01than anything else for me because I have a feeling he
- 11:08probably had some offers out there that were like 5 for 80.
- 11:15In my head, I'm thinking I'd be comfortable with four.
- 11:19I would have. I would have probably done five.
- 11:21OK, yeah, just because of the defensive flexibility, I feel
- 11:25like that's an added perk. But the offense, yeah, it that's
- 11:31what makes me nervous. What what dollar amount would
- 11:34you throw in on that four year deal and just straight four?
- 11:38No. Options I would have made I
- 11:41would have thrown in an option certainly.
- 11:43But the four, four years for me I would be comfortable doing 4.
- 11:50Because it's like 4 years of you could you could find worse than
- 11:56four years of Cody Bellinger. And if it doesn't pan out the
- 11:59first year or two it would still be a manageable enough contract
- 12:02where you could trade it to somebody who would be like well
- 12:04let's see if we can find the the MVP Cody Bellinger.
- 12:07I'm tired of hearing MVP Cody Bellinger like it will well past
- 12:12that window stop. Like I read it in all the
- 12:14reports and I get it he earned it he that he's owed that to his
- 12:18name I understand but we need we're we're beyond MVP Cody
- 12:23Bellinger we're likely not gonna see that version of Cody
- 12:26Bellinger again. So we can't be utilizing that
- 12:30moniker as leverage in this situation.
- 12:35I mean the the deal's done, but I'm just saying like, I don't
- 12:39know, I I feel like that would have been a sweet spot, four or
- 12:41five, but. For eighty, I think three years,
- 12:4980 is nuts. Yeah, What's What is that?
- 12:51What is that 20? Six and change. 26.
- 12:55Front loaded to where? It's 3030 and then 20 in the
- 12:59last year? Yeah.
- 13:00OK. So I don't love that.
- 13:06I don't. I don't love seeing one year of
- 13:09you coming back and then saying here's 30 mil.
- 13:15Yeah. I mean this contract is
- 13:17essentially structured for him to bet on himself again and and
- 13:22tap back into the market at the end of this year.
- 13:24This is a great player deal. I think this is great.
- 13:28I would be stoked if I didn't get the long term deal I was
- 13:31hoping for. I'd be absolutely thrilled with
- 13:33this. I don't, I don't be an honest,
- 13:37Yeah, I don't either. I don't.
- 13:39I I'm OK with the one, the option after the first year
- 13:44'cause it's like OK, you agree to come back here, We'll keep
- 13:48you in Chicago. We'll see how this first year
- 13:51goes. But if it based on how it goes,
- 13:54you're either you're either out of here or you're staying put
- 13:59and we're going to keep you. But the second option we're just
- 14:03going to run it back again. If this first year doesn't go
- 14:05the way either party plans. It's like let's let's let's
- 14:09stick around. Let's try it again.
- 14:10It's like no, either commit or get out it.
- 14:13Like you said it's a great it's a great situation for Cody.
- 14:16But I'm. I could I could have done with
- 14:18that. If I'm the Cubs I maybe could
- 14:19have done without the second option.
- 14:20But they needed a guy, and they got their guy.
- 14:24It would. It would have been, yeah, I
- 14:25don't know. I really don't know.
- 14:27I two player options in a three-year deal is crazy.
- 14:32I would have understood. Player option for year 2, club
- 14:37option for year 3, even better. You know what I mean?
- 14:41Yeah, yeah, the two I've never, I don't think I've been super
- 14:46familiar with deals like this before.
- 14:48Not in this, not in the short term stuff, but good for him.
- 14:54I'm also, I was looking through his dude's gotten paid, paid
- 14:58because the arbitration stuff like back in 2020, I think that
- 15:06was post 'cause he said MVP was 2019, right?
- 15:11Right. I'm like 99% sure.
- 15:14Well, you you keep going on that.
- 15:16We got 11 and a half 2021 year arbitration settlement next
- 15:21year, 202116.1 arbitration settlement, 17 the next year, 17
- 15:29five the next year, which is just crazy.
- 15:38Yeah. And I think I don't know how it
- 15:41works, do they? So the Cubs bought out five and
- 15:50a half mil. Why does it say buyout for 2024?
- 15:59I don't know how that works. Is that added into the overall 3
- 16:05or 80, maybe 5 1/2 was, I don't know.
- 16:14It says I'm looking on spot, spot track, just bow track,
- 16:18whatever it is. It's my favorite website for
- 16:21contracts by the way and I'm looking at like year by year
- 16:27breakdown. It says 2024 buyout one Year 5
- 16:321/2 mil. I don't exactly understand how
- 16:36that means. And then it's current dead
- 16:38contracts says 2024 three and a half or five and a half.
- 16:43I don't know what that means. I'm not seeing that at all.
- 16:46I see 20/24/30 mil, 202530 mil opt out.
- 16:56See that? I don't know what that means.
- 16:59Like what was the buyout? He was a free agent.
- 17:05That's over my head, I. Should probably understand that
- 17:09I think there's a lot of loopholes financially that we
- 17:13don't know. Good for him though.
- 17:16Got paid again and this is an overpay in my mind.
- 17:23One year of coming back and giving like productive numbers.
- 17:31I'm not going to sit here and say it was like MVP caliber
- 17:35again because we're tired of that combo, remember.
- 17:38But one year like to, I'm going to need a little more proof in
- 17:42that pudding, you know? Yeah, I mean it ultimately and
- 17:47this has been a topic of discussion, this comes, this
- 17:49comes back to Scott Boris like the he's he's been in the news
- 17:52as of late because the the Boris 4, I believe they're called or
- 17:58Boris 5 are I don't want to say slowing up the market because
- 18:04we're at spring training, we're pretty much there.
- 18:07So it's really we're just waiting this out.
- 18:09They're not exactly holding anybody back, but they're
- 18:12holding back some teams from finalizing their personnel plans
- 18:18and he can't. Scott Boris came out and said
- 18:21just the other day. He said clubs have plenty of
- 18:23money to spend, but they're not spending in a matter that is
- 18:26customary to competitiveness. It's not that they don't have
- 18:29the ability to pay, but their choice is to regress on their
- 18:32payrolls. Yes and no.
- 18:36Scott, you can't look us in the eye and tell me that you really
- 18:43thought Cody Bellinger of all people was going to pull in a
- 18:47double digit length, like years and length contracts.
- 18:52I'm looking less into the fact that these are all Boris
- 18:57players. I'm looking more into the fact
- 19:00that, like, they're all have like, some, like, red flags
- 19:07around them, you know what I mean?
- 19:09Like, for obvious reasons we just went through Kodi.
- 19:11But like, smells a little scary, you know what I mean?
- 19:16Because he had to prove that he can stick around for a full
- 19:18season and give up like ace numbers.
- 19:22Obviously the last Sai Young, he had like a huge set back the
- 19:27next year. So I think there's teams that
- 19:30are worried about that. And and talking about monikers
- 19:33and everything. Throwing the Sai Young label.
- 19:35Blake Snow. Yeah, he earned it.
- 19:37He worked for it. He put up the numbers to to earn
- 19:40that. But I mean this has to be one of
- 19:44the the least confident Cy Young's going into a follow like
- 19:50the subsequent season that I can remember in in recent years like
- 19:54I just, I'm not thrilled at the prospect of a of a Blake Snell
- 19:59leading leading a rotation he he's gonna fit the bill for
- 20:02somebody. But it's it's not exactly the
- 20:07the. The strength of a label that it
- 20:10might hold for somebody else, like a Garrett Cole, for
- 20:13example. Yeah, but.
- 20:15And for the reasons we just said, right, like the the the
- 20:18down year right after his first Cy Young.
- 20:21Also he did this Cy Young in a weird way.
- 20:24And there are a lot of teams that have the philosophy that
- 20:27they don't like walks. Then he's about this whatever
- 20:30kind of philosophy with walks. So he's a little different,
- 20:34right? And like Jordan Montgomery,
- 20:38we've seen some ebbs and flows with him.
- 20:40We saw an excellent postseason out of him.
- 20:45I'm not going to sit here and say he was fantastic all of last
- 20:48year, that you just caught fire at the right time.
- 20:54So you're talking about names that are just like, I'm not
- 20:57going to just sit here and say, oh, like, it's they're Boris
- 21:00contracts and these guys are going to do what they need to
- 21:03do. They're a little weird.
- 21:04They're a little different. And it's like a perfect storm of
- 21:08these free agents that are left around that our teams are
- 21:11tentative about, and I can't blame them for being tentative
- 21:14about it. I think Snell Montgomery, like
- 21:20you said, I'm sure there's a lot of teams out there that are
- 21:23like, hey, we're not really sure we want to give you ace money,
- 21:26'cause you haven't proven that you're an ace.
- 21:29Ace. And then you have a lot of these
- 21:32teams that maybe have a solid rotation, maybe already have an
- 21:36ace and have one of these two guys, you know, step in as a two
- 21:41or three. You've also had the the carrot
- 21:46dangled in front of you of Dylan Cease and the White Sox saying,
- 21:50hey, you know, we're going to retract that.
- 21:53So like it's it's hard to sit there and say hey I want to sign
- 21:57Snell for this this much for this long when you could play
- 22:02the long game test out your first half of the season with
- 22:06your rotation and if Cease does become available or other Rd.
- 22:11arms around the around the league become available you'd
- 22:14rather trade and use it as a rental.
- 22:16You know I think there's just a lot of moving factors to this
- 22:19whole group. But to sum up I I do like I like
- 22:25Cody Bellinger staying with Chicago.
- 22:28I like what Chicago's trying to do.
- 22:30I like Craig Counsel coming in and, you know, just kind of
- 22:33shifting things around. They're committing the guys and
- 22:39they seem like they have players that are kind of fun to bounce
- 22:41around a little bit. I watched a little bit of spring
- 22:44training last few days and like you watch magical kind of bounce
- 22:49around. It's a lot of roster
- 22:51flexibility. So I like what they're doing.
- 22:56I'm about it. It's hard to see them anywhere
- 23:00else, you know. Yeah, I mean, well, what I was
- 23:05going to say, cubbies are exciting me.
- 23:07But in regards to Bellinger, I don't.
- 23:10I don't know. I didn't.
- 23:13I wasn't very emotionally invested in having him stay put
- 23:17in Chicago. I'm obviously Cubs fans wanted
- 23:20him, but if he would have went elsewhere, it'd have been like,
- 23:23OK, yeah, that makes sense. I'm with you.
- 23:25I agree. Yeah.
- 23:27I mean, I thought Yankees would be a good fit pre Soto, but Post
- 23:33Soto is like, no, it's all good. Which quick, quick side note
- 23:40here. I I hate to say it, but so I
- 23:46have. I don't know if I've ever seen a
- 23:49more perfect fit for the New York Yankees.
- 23:52Like the guy, Juan Soto was born to be a New York Yankee.
- 23:56I it it just it looks so fire. It didn't hit me until I watched
- 24:03the first game and I was like, oh boy, hitting the scoreboard
- 24:08in left center got the it's got the back in the shuffle.
- 24:13It looks so good. It's really unfortunate that
- 24:16you're only gonna have that for a year.
- 24:18I don't know, man. I don't know.
- 24:20Born to be a Yankee and he'll be playing elsewhere next year.
- 24:25It's a real shame. We'll see.
- 24:28Real shame. You can't.
- 24:30You can try to plant that. I don't know.
- 24:34It'd be it'd be a real shame if another team within the division
- 24:38that has very, very strong Dominican roots maybe lured him.
- 24:44Sure. Lured him up north, sure, maybe
- 24:48a little northeast. I really don't see that but.
- 24:54That's what I said. You just you would hate to see
- 24:57it. You certainly would not want to
- 24:59see that. You're finding your your year
- 25:02long talking points already, aren't you?
- 25:05You're coming back to this well. You will absolutely come back to
- 25:08this well. I got.
- 25:11I gotta latch on to something, Nate.
- 25:13That's true. I was thinking I was in line for
- 25:16gas today and I looked out the window and I said I can't nail
- 25:19down how I feel about this team. I wake up one day and I'm it's
- 25:24that meme where. It's like that's.
- 25:28Well, you know the Costco lines, you gotta wait.
- 25:31So that's where I do. I just do a lot of lot of
- 25:34reflection, a lot of thinking, 'cause you're you're sitting
- 25:36there for a minute for good reason, That's cheap gas.
- 25:39But I'm sitting there thinking I'm like, I don't know.
- 25:41I don't know how to feel about this team.
- 25:44I wake up one. It's as I was saying, it's like
- 25:46that meme where it's like the urge to say we're back 10
- 25:51minutes after saying it's over. That's me every, every day.
- 25:55I'm like I I'm just going to dive in head first, even though
- 25:58I know that the part of the pool I'm diving in is 3 feet deep.
- 26:03But I'm going to dive in anyway. And then the next day I I say I
- 26:08don't want to have anything to do with this team.
- 26:13I don't know. I don't know how to feel.
- 26:14So the thought the the pipe dream of maybe luring in a Juan
- 26:19Soto after being a rental for the Yankees, that's something to
- 26:24that's some that's a dream I can hold on to.
- 26:27That's a dream I've had since lunch and I'm not giving up on
- 26:30it now. OK.
- 26:32I wanted to know how long it's been sticking around.
- 26:35Are you? Is that about the same time
- 26:38frame since lunch? Same as Michael?
- 26:42Yeah, yeah. All right.
- 26:44That's where we're at. Yeah, wondering where he cooked
- 26:47this up. Speaking of cooking up, Mitch
- 26:50Keller will be cooking up for the Pirates for the next five
- 26:53years on a $77 million deal. I love this deal.
- 26:59I I I'm gonna be honest. I'm gonna, I'm gonna be honest.
- 27:10I'm gonna be honest. I like what the Pirates are
- 27:16doing. They lock up Mitch Keller.
- 27:21They've got Paul Skeens in the wings number.
- 27:25Last year's number one pick in the draft, they locked up
- 27:29Cabrian Hayes. They got the guy that we all
- 27:32thought didn't want to be in Pittsburgh, Brian Reynolds.
- 27:38They can go at least through the 2030 season.
- 27:41I'm all about what the Pittsburgh they're saying Bob.
- 27:46Sell the team, Sell the team. Maybe Bob should sell a team
- 27:49because the family that I got up in Pennsylvania, they say
- 27:53Pittsburgh Pirates are just the the farm system for the rest of
- 27:57Major League Baseball. That might be true.
- 27:59We've seen it play out like that in years past.
- 28:02But as of today, February 26th, I like what the Pirates are
- 28:11doing. I see the vision, I see the
- 28:13movement. It's in the it's going.
- 28:14We're moving in the right direction.
- 28:16We're sailing the ship in the right direction.
- 28:20And with this latest move of signing Mitch Keller to a five
- 28:23year, $77 million extension through the 2028 season, I feel
- 28:33good about the Pirates. I recorded that as well on my
- 28:38cello. Big strings guy.
- 28:42Big. Cello guy, Yeah, that's the one
- 28:45that stands up, right, I think. That's the big boy.
- 28:48Yep. Yeah, dude, we agree with
- 28:51everything you said. I love what they're doing.
- 28:52It's it's starting to, it's starting to happen.
- 28:56It's starting to happen. And this is all you can ask for.
- 29:03If you're a Pirates fan, that's all you can ask for.
- 29:06Grow some talent. Hold on to the talent.
- 29:08Once you realize it's talent build around.
- 29:12Mitch Keller deserves it. Great year last year and it's a
- 29:17it's a it's a team friendly but still worthy type paycheck.
- 29:27I love it. I love it.
- 29:31And again, you just start setting precedent.
- 29:36The more guys you sign, the more you can see that like, OK, these
- 29:41guys are sticking around. You find some success.
- 29:43Not going to sit here and say they're going to go walk away
- 29:47the the division or anything, but compete, get better, grow
- 29:53your talent. Who knows in a perfect storm,
- 29:59who knows? Who knows what could happen?
- 30:02And then all of a sudden you trade for somebody.
- 30:05All of a sudden you extend somebody, all of a sudden you
- 30:08get a big free agent who wants to stick around, 'cause their
- 30:11hometown is there, whatever it may be.
- 30:15But they're doing the right stuff.
- 30:16And I agree now's the time to sell.
- 30:18I mean, stock's never been higher.
- 30:25Look, cut went back, right? Yeah, cutches back, so.
- 30:29So cutches, back, milk that for as much as you can get all that
- 30:32merch. I agree.
- 30:34I agree. O'Neill Cruz is will be back
- 30:37this year. Good on the Pirates, man.
- 30:42Because look, this whole time we Pirates fans, we haven't been
- 30:47asking you to go out there and spend $300 million on anybody.
- 30:51No. We just wanted people.
- 30:53Just wanted you guys to pay, pay people.
- 30:55That's it. The bare minimum.
- 30:57And to your point, setting precedent, letting guys know one
- 31:02who are in that clubhouse and two future potential targets
- 31:09that you may want to go after, you're letting them know that
- 31:12hey, we're not, we're not the same cheap organization that we
- 31:17once were. Two, 3-4, however many years
- 31:20ago. This is a different, it's a
- 31:23different team. They still have some work.
- 31:26They still have some work to do. They still have some ground to
- 31:29to make up in that area. But they're heading in the right
- 31:33direction and that that's all you can ask for.
- 31:35Yeah, 100% raise that thing. Raise it.
- 31:44Speaking of raising it, Tim Anderson's gonna need to raise
- 31:46that batting average if he wants to stick around in Major League
- 31:49Baseball. But the Marlins said we think it
- 31:53might happen. So we'll we'll take you on the
- 31:56Miami Marlins. Sign it Tim Anderson to a one
- 31:58year, $5 million contract a season he presumably wants to
- 32:08forget 2023. He.
- 32:10I'm sure he's already blocked that out from his memory.
- 32:14Not not a good year. His 582 OPS was the lowest among
- 32:19all qualified hitters in Major League Baseball and ranked last
- 32:26in Defensive Run Saved for shortstop at -16.
- 32:33It was very strange. I saw somebody, I don't remember
- 32:35who, who posted about it, but they said the drop off just
- 32:38doesn't make sense. He posted 4/4 consecutive
- 32:42seasons of hitting 300 or higher and then just had a sudden drop
- 32:47off. Didn't didn't make sense.
- 32:49The defensive stuff you see that's.
- 32:51I think we just know that that's how he is defensively.
- 32:54But yeah, he's at least he's typically a lock.
- 33:01You can roll him out there and hit 280 no problem.
- 33:04So it was weird. Weird to see.
- 33:08I'm personally not a huge fan of the guy.
- 33:10So like, it is what it is. But good for the Marlins.
- 33:15The the. I mean, why not?
- 33:21What do you got to lose? 5 mil?
- 33:24Whatever. I mean, it's a good fit form.
- 33:30Of all the teams out there, Marlins are known for their
- 33:33player, sure. But in terms of an environment,
- 33:38I think, I think this works well for him.
- 33:40I mean, he we all know this guy loves to play with with with
- 33:44some flair and Miami's a place to do that.
- 33:46They they outwardly embrace it. Like, there's no hiding the fact
- 33:50that that team, that that city, the organization, they're all
- 33:53about trying to find ways to spice things up as opposed to
- 33:58the rest of the league. You could say, but I I think
- 34:01it'll be a good fit and I think a change of scenery might do
- 34:03them well. I agree.
- 34:05Chicago's tough, man. And like, especially, I don't,
- 34:08dude. I just, I can't imagine starting
- 34:09every season up there, every season, starting off so Dang
- 34:13cold. Like, as a hitter, it's already
- 34:17getting your it's hard getting your season going.
- 34:19So doing that in the cold, he's got to be brutal.
- 34:22So yeah, change of scenery. And if he does get back to his
- 34:26typical ways in the box, him and Luis Arai is like, that's that's
- 34:35crazy. That's a crazy amount of hits
- 34:38between those two guys at the top of the lineup.
- 34:41So again, they don't. They still don't have any Bop,
- 34:46but cool, Good signing I suppose.
- 34:54A couple deals happening today. Manuel Margot, Manny Margot and
- 35:03Kike Hernandez being shuffled around a little bit.
- 35:06Manuel Margot, traded by the Dodgers to the Twins after
- 35:10hanging out with the team for what seemed like days.
- 35:13Hung around for a photo shoot. Got some sweet picks for the the
- 35:17IG and some Dodgers threads. But on his way, on his way out.
- 35:24Heading to the no, that's Canada.
- 35:27I was going to say the great white N that's Canada.
- 35:29Well, I mean you're basically there in Minnesota.
- 35:32You're you're basically there. They talk the same thing.
- 35:35Exactly same thing. And then, corresponding move,
- 35:39the Dodgers signed Kike Hernandez for a little bit of
- 35:42utility depth. Let's see details.
- 35:52So he came over. For those who don't know, he
- 35:54came over in the glass now. Deal.
- 35:56Correct. Weird.
- 35:59I think it's a little weird to like have him there for like a
- 36:02you know, like 3 weeks and. Then I I I mean, I I think, I
- 36:07know it sounds silly, but I, with stuff like this happens
- 36:10when it's these weird personnel like, hey, you were here for a
- 36:13cup of coffee. I try to think about it in terms
- 36:15of fantasy, like the same way we've done for.
- 36:19Years where it's like. Are you are you willing?
- 36:21Yeah. Well not so much that.
- 36:23But are you willing to to take this guy on in a trade to get
- 36:26the guy that you're really after and then you you can figure out
- 36:29what you want to do with him after the fact.
- 36:30But if if clearing up a a a spot for somebody helps them out and
- 36:36helps the deal get done, sure, we'll take on a Manny Margot.
- 36:39And if we don't find the pieces that we like, we keep them
- 36:43around and and see how it pans out.
- 36:45But if not or if we do find somebody see you, it was nice
- 36:50knowing you hope you enjoyed photo day.
- 36:53And they they got their guy who I, to be honest, I didn't see
- 36:58not ending up in a Dodgers uniform to start the year.
- 37:02I mean, at this point are are we just looking at like a Clayton
- 37:05Kershaw esque situation for Kiki where he just rides out one
- 37:09year, deals with the Dodgers until it's over?
- 37:11I suppose what was the point of including him in the Margot
- 37:15deal? Or I mean the That's no deal.
- 37:19You think that was a raise thing or a Dodgers thing?
- 37:23I. Don't know what are they was it
- 37:30to make room for somebody or they they got somebody on the on
- 37:35the horizon that they're hoping to get into the.
- 37:41Offload, Possible. Slide.
- 37:44Offload possible. He had a yeah, he had a two
- 37:53year, $19 million deal. And then I think with this deal
- 38:00today, Dodgers sent some money with it, right?
- 38:09Yeah, they did. Was it 8 mil?
- 38:12Did I see eight mil? It wasn't a whole lot, all
- 38:18things considered. I6 mil?
- 38:226 mil? Yeah.
- 38:23So very minimal. Which eats half of next year,
- 38:28which I think is a $12 million deal next year.
- 38:30So that makes sense. I I I'm confused.
- 38:37I'm confused because it's not that much of an offload for the
- 38:41Rays to like say like, hey, please take him, but also why
- 38:50ask for him to be included in the deal if you're just gonna
- 38:52ship him out of town and half of his contract?
- 38:55For what? Did we even see what the return
- 38:58was? Are you talking about on behalf
- 39:02of the Dodgers? From the twins, yeah.
- 39:07They got shortstop Noah Miller. So probably a low A guy.
- 39:15I mean I'm not sitting here and saying like I'm not defending
- 39:18Manny Margot. I don't think he's anything
- 39:20great. You know he's he's nice.
- 39:23He has occasional pop pretty decent glove.
- 39:27But in All in all like he's a below average Major League
- 39:30hitter. So I don't think it's anything
- 39:32that's like I'm not saying the Dodgers are missing out on.
- 39:36It's just a weird thing like I understand including him in the
- 39:39deal. I I I don't know why the Reyes
- 39:43gave him that much money. To answer your question, no
- 39:48Miller Hye. He got up to Hye last year, so.
- 39:50There you go. There you go.
- 39:51Take that for what it's worth, yeah.
- 39:54It's. Confusing.
- 39:56I'm. I mean, I'm just glad they got
- 39:58their guy back. I mean, like I said, I didn't
- 40:00see Kiki starting the year with anybody other than LA and they
- 40:05wanted to or they needed to make a move to open up that spot for
- 40:09him and with. Him I'm a huge fan of players
- 40:12break their own contracts on social.
- 40:15I love that. Huge fan.
- 40:16Much better stop being around the Bush.
- 40:20Just tell people. I think I saw he put a little
- 40:25teaser Oh sure enough open up Instagram.
- 40:27He's the 1st post. Put a little teaser.
- 40:30He's he's got a little dear LA wow he put AI didn't even read
- 40:41the caption. He put like a full on or no this
- 40:44was from this was from 20/21 so he just reposted it and then
- 40:49followed it up with the psych post and then dropped the
- 40:52contract details. I'm.
- 40:53I'm all about it. Big fan.
- 40:55OK, I just like when they do that.
- 40:58I just like when players just come out and say it.
- 41:00Like what? His reporters can figure it out
- 41:06later. I don't know.
- 41:09That's it. That's all I have to say on it.
- 41:11Key K is Key K is Key K Why not clubhouse guy?
- 41:16Your entire roster couldn't be more stacked.
- 41:19By the way, I will be seeing on Saturday going to my first
- 41:23spring training game Saturday. Nice, dude.
- 41:25Congrats. That's big Cubs.
- 41:26Big time. Cubs.
- 41:27Dodgers. So maybe I get a little
- 41:28Bellinger. It is a split squad day though,
- 41:31so I don't know how many Dodgers guys are going elsewhere.
- 41:34I almost, when I was putting in information, I almost got
- 41:37Dodgers Brewers tickets at the Brewers facility.
- 41:43Really, really glad I noticed that before hitting submit.
- 41:48Went back. Going to Glendale, got some
- 41:51seats. There, Glenn.
- 41:55That's not Camelback, right? Oh, that is Camelback.
- 41:58Yeah. OK Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 42:01So where we were at? Yeah, yeah, that was Dodgers.
- 42:06Rangers I think when we went. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:09Anyway. Mama Ray has to be in town.
- 42:12Catch some rays. Catch some sunshine.
- 42:15Catch some beers and hot dogs. All the goods.
- 42:21Expensive, dude. Expensive.
- 42:28It's a little necessary. It's a little stranger, yeah,
- 42:32that have gotten out of hand. Are the Dodgers the outlier,
- 42:34though, just because of what they got in store for this
- 42:36season? It's.
- 42:37Every place. I mean, I remember it was a it
- 42:40was a little rough when we were out there last year trying to
- 42:43find a game to go to, but. If you want to put your butt in
- 42:46an actual chair, it's a minimum of 60 bucks I'd say.
- 42:51That's so unnecessary. Yeah, that's so unnecessary.
- 42:55Because in reality, you're only getting one or two ABS of
- 42:57players that you actually know. Yeah yeah no, that makes sense.
- 43:02Let's let's let's raise up to 100 knowing that let's crazy
- 43:08let's really get our money's worth here MLB teams.
- 43:12Brandon Crawford signed with the Saint Louis Cardinals providing
- 43:18a little bit of infield depth specifically some shortstop
- 43:22depth depth for Mason win. I like, I like what the
- 43:29Cardinals have in the infield. I like what what we're looking
- 43:34at for this year. You got obviously got Goldie at
- 43:37first. You got Nolan Nolan holding it
- 43:39down at 3rd, but you got you got Mason Wynn holding it down at
- 43:45the 6th hole. You got Crawford as the backup.
- 43:49You got Brendan Donovan, you got Tommy Edmond in the mix.
- 43:54He's. I think he's.
- 43:56He's going full time center field, isn't he?
- 43:58Yeah, but I I'm, I'm reading that if if things don't go as
- 44:03planned in the infield for the Cardinals and if last year was
- 44:07any indication, things have a possibility of going wrong.
- 44:11You could see Tommy Edmond back in in the infield for who knows
- 44:16stretches couple spots starts here and there.
- 44:18But they got, they got pieces to work with.
- 44:22Nolan Gorman. Brendan Donovan, as I said.
- 44:25I expect one of those two guys to get sent somewhere soon.
- 44:29Yeah. If they, if they don't, if they
- 44:33have somewhat of a lackluster first half, I could see where
- 44:37those guys going. Sure, but working working out of
- 44:42an overabundance, yeah, would be their, would be their scenario.
- 44:48Name someone. Name someone.
- 44:50Better to to mentor a young shortstop.
- 44:55You can't. You literally can't.
- 44:58Brandon Crawford's a freaking wizard, and I'm assuming Mason
- 45:04wins. Reasoning behind all of his hype
- 45:09is more offensive than defensive.
- 45:12So get somebody in here that can work with that kid and be with
- 45:16that kid every single day next to him.
- 45:20This is like a this is a a genius move that I don't care
- 45:26what Brandon Crawford provides you this year could be nothing,
- 45:33could be nothing, and you're still getting value.
- 45:35So I like it. You gotta wonder, though, if he
- 45:42was looking at that Miami Marlins opening going.
- 45:46I feel like I could give you just a little something for just
- 45:49a little bit longer. I wonder what it was that pushed
- 45:53him to Saint Louis 01. Could assume it was lack of
- 45:59options at this point in time. But Oh yeah, yeah, I would
- 46:03assume, I guess. I guess you can't really hold
- 46:05out for much longer given that we're already in the midst of
- 46:10games being played. So I gotta gotta figured out, I
- 46:13gotta get settled in with whoever and get it going.
- 46:16But like I said, I'm I'm liking that infield.
- 46:21To your point about Mason Wynn he he played for like 3540 games
- 46:29last year, hit like 172. So he the potential is certainly
- 46:39there but he's going to need to adapt.
- 46:44It's a big league pitching and I I think, I think he being around
- 46:49guys like Goldie and Nolan, true pure hitters.
- 46:53That's where you're going to that's where you're going to
- 46:54benefit the most on the offensive side of the ball.
- 46:57But then to have Crawford next to you, I mean that's yeah,
- 47:03that's that's worth its weight in gold.
- 47:06I think Mason Wynne would be just fine.
- 47:08It's really weird what's going on over there.
- 47:10Like you have this like older core, you know what I'm saying?
- 47:16Like you have Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan and they're like
- 47:23they're obviously getting a holder.
- 47:25Like let's just be honest, they're they're I think their
- 47:28best days are probably behind them.
- 47:31You're still going to get really good baseball out of them, don't
- 47:33get me wrong. But then you have this, like,
- 47:38group right behind them. That could be a long term thing.
- 47:44Brendan Donovan. Nolan Gorman.
- 47:46Mason Wynne, like. Jordan Walker.
- 47:49Right. It's odd what's like and they're
- 47:53all they're basically MLB ready while you have these like future
- 47:59Hall of Farmers kind of blocking them.
- 48:01It's really strange. I don't know how I feel about it
- 48:07and like if you are in a weird spot this year and you're
- 48:11underachieving, why not sell one of those guys considering what
- 48:15you have coming up behind them? I mean the the trade Nolan
- 48:21conversation was, dare I say, at its peak last year when the team
- 48:28was just torpedoing like, I mean that was that was an ugly place
- 48:34to be if you're the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 48:36I mean, people were, us included, calling for the
- 48:39manager to be fired, trade Nolan on every in the replies, on
- 48:45every tweet. That was an ugly place to be.
- 48:48So if if we even get a hint of that this year, maybe we just
- 48:53get ahead of the ball here, get ahead of the curve and say,
- 48:56yeah, we. Just do it, we.
- 48:59Have. I guess I I'm changing my mind.
- 49:02I I I said earlier that like one of Brendan Donovan or or Nolan
- 49:08Norman aren't getting moved. I think I feel safer saying one
- 49:14of Nolan Arenado or Paul Goldschmidt are getting moved so
- 49:21and they need pitching bad. They need to revamp that.
- 49:28Yeah, they kind of rotation of geriatrics over there, but we'll
- 49:32see. But again, start your season
- 49:37off, You bring in Sonny Gray. Like it?
- 49:40Yeah, young studs. They're promising.
- 49:42Like you're not. Like, I don't think they're in a
- 49:44horrible position. And it's not like it's a a
- 49:47ridiculously out of reach division either.
- 49:51No. And this hodgepodge of depth
- 49:53that we're talking about if it's enough to if you get adequate
- 49:57performance out of the these guys in the rotation and this
- 50:00this depth that we're referring that we keep talking about.
- 50:03If that gets we, we talked about this with everybody.
- 50:06If it can get you to the deadline then you see what
- 50:08happens and maybe you go out and get an arm that you desperately
- 50:11need at least on this side of the ball.
- 50:13So I'm just trying to give a little, trying to provide a
- 50:19little optimism for Cardinals fans because I know we're coming
- 50:21off a rather. I I demoralizing season.
- 50:25I get it and I think they're in AI, think they're in good shape.
- 50:28I'm surprised they didn't do more trading of assets last
- 50:32year, but I do think they're in good shape and I think that they
- 50:36have tradable assets again this year.
- 50:38If it doesn't go well again and I I would that's that's a silver
- 50:42lining. If anything, it's much better
- 50:45than being a fan base. We're like this roster has
- 50:47nothing and we have nothing in the pipeline.
- 50:49We can't even sell what we have to revamp in any way.
- 50:54There could be worse situations in tougher divisions.
- 51:00Correct. Very valid point.
- 51:04Speaking of divisions, let's switch over to the NL Easts.
- 51:07Look at the Met. Specifically, some tough news
- 51:10for their rotation. Kodai Singa is going to be out
- 51:14three to four weeks, all but ruling out.
- 51:21I don't think they've officially ruled it out, but will not be.
- 51:24Your Opening Day starter was diagnosed with a moderate
- 51:32capsule strain in his pitching shoulder after an MRI.
- 51:43Yeah, he won't throw for three weeks getting a PRP shot.
- 51:47It's just more more. Mets.
- 51:51Look, I'm gonna say it. Everyone's thinking it.
- 51:54This is what makes you fearful of signing Japanese pitchers.
- 52:00We've we've seen this movie before and I hope I'm, I'm hope
- 52:05it's just a a minor set back. I hope he's healthy.
- 52:09I hope he doesn't have to deal with, you know, continuing
- 52:12problems. But This is why This is why it
- 52:17happens often. So I'm not surprised on top of
- 52:23the fact that there's a Mets logo on top of it, so.
- 52:29Fair. But you look at the contract,
- 52:31this is the, I believe the second year of a 575 deal, which
- 52:38isn't. Crazy, right?
- 52:40Which is my saying just in general.
- 52:42No, no for sure for sure. But I'm.
- 52:44Saying sudden. A year later we see Yamamoto
- 52:46with 300 and never thrown a pitch in this league before so.
- 52:49No, I I totally, I'm totally with you on that.
- 52:52I'm just saying again looking at specific situations trying to
- 52:56find some optimism for some of these clubs.
- 53:00It could be it could be worse if you're the Mets like you could
- 53:02have you could have dumped a whole lot more.
- 53:05You could have invested a lot more stock into this guy but you
- 53:09got him on a not knowing what he'd be able to provide you on
- 53:13American soil. You you got him at a relatively
- 53:18on a on a relatively fair deal and like you said assuming this
- 53:23is nothing more than a minor set back and he can give you that
- 53:28same level of output that we saw last year.
- 53:30I think he finished second in the in the rookie of the year
- 53:33voting. I I think you're OK.
- 53:37I think you can you can look elsewhere to take your lumps if
- 53:40you're the Mets because you know they're coming.
- 53:42But for for their sake, for for Kodai's sake, I hope it's not
- 53:47him that they're they're focused on.
- 53:50Because when he's when he's I need to be, he gives you the
- 53:54stuff. The only thing they need to be
- 53:56focused on is finding a trade partner for Pete Alonzo 'cause
- 54:01you know, he ain't finishing the year there.
- 54:04You think he's gone? That's a weird situation.
- 54:09There's a whole lot of, like, we want him.
- 54:11I wanna stay here. And also like, I'm probably not
- 54:16gonna stay here. It's very strange.
- 54:19It's a lot of weirdness. But yeah, it's true.
- 54:24Met's gone met. Sorry Kodai.
- 54:30I do like Kodai. Yeah, big fan I.
- 54:34Don't really. Like the most.
- 54:36Of that roster, but. Is it the Ghost Fork?
- 54:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:45I mean when you when you can coin something like.
- 54:47That it's true and you get the you're.
- 54:49OK in you're OK in my book. On your glove.
- 54:54It's pretty sick. Big fan.
- 54:57You know what? I'm not a big fan of Nate and we
- 55:01can kind of wrap it up with this.
- 55:03I know we touched on a little bit last episode, but since the
- 55:09last time we talked about these uniforms, there's been a whole
- 55:14nother storm of kickback on the pants.
- 55:19Last time we talked, it was about the tops.
- 55:22Yeah. But what a mess they have on
- 55:28their hands and that Major League.
- 55:30When I say they I'm talking Major League Baseball fanatics.
- 55:33They don't really seem to care. Rob Manfred has come out and and
- 55:38adamantly stated that this was done for the sake of
- 55:42performance. Keep these guys cooler.
- 55:45Keep them sleeker, Keep them lighter.
- 55:51Well, Rob, I'm all, I'm all for that.
- 55:54I I think. I think improving the wearable
- 55:59technology in the form of uniforms is important.
- 56:03I think it should continue to evolve.
- 56:05But if you're going to put guys out in uniforms, the uniforms
- 56:09have to consist of actual clothing.
- 56:12Like actual threads, actual yarn, actual polyester.
- 56:16Day that someone gets like a a Gatorade bath after a walk off,
- 56:21who knows what we're going to see?
- 56:23I haven't even considered that. I'm I'm.
- 56:25I'm stuck at thinking about what this is going to look like in
- 56:28mid-july in Florida. Swampy boom when it's 117° out.
- 56:35And that's that's is working. I mean, again, I said it last
- 56:42week, how many levels of approval did this have to go
- 56:46through? You're telling me not one person
- 56:49saw this and said, hey, maybe let's not push this through just
- 56:54yet because you can see genitalia like that right then
- 57:00and there. That should have been where the
- 57:01conversation stopped or started and stopped like, hey, should we
- 57:05put the, should we roll these pants out?
- 57:06No, because you can see balls. That's that's what we're dealing
- 57:12with. These pants are atrocious and I
- 57:15and they were even they I was listening to the the the Red Sox
- 57:19game today on the radio and they they're talking about on the
- 57:25broadcast which I I love when when broadcasters just kind of
- 57:30go off script a little bit and they they let you know like what
- 57:33they're really thinking and they they brought up a good point.
- 57:35I think it was Lou Marloni was talking about how like the the
- 57:40Major League uniform used to like represent something.
- 57:46It used to mean something it used to resemble the class and
- 57:52the the standard that is Major League Baseball where it's
- 57:56that's as high as it goes Major League Baseball.
- 57:59So you better be giving these players the best of the best and
- 58:04when you're rolling these guys out in uniforms that aren't even
- 58:07adequate enough to ward off a trip to Dick's Sporting Goods to
- 58:12find a backup pair of pants. Because that's happened with
- 58:15some of these guys. They said yeah I might need to
- 58:17run to to the old sporting goods store because these aren't it.
- 58:22If that's if that's what you're rolling these guys out in that
- 58:26and and it's the people that say, well, they're and there's
- 58:29been a lot of guys, even within baseball, forget about the fans
- 58:32that don't care. There've been a lot of guys in
- 58:34the league. They're just like, whatever it
- 58:37is, what it is, I'm like have have some pride in something
- 58:42like Mookie Betts was just like as long as I got a uniform, I'm
- 58:46like, dude, first of all Mookie Betts has never been in
- 58:48solidarity with like anything when it comes to like other guys
- 58:51around the league. He's going to do what he's going
- 58:53to do and that's that. So I'm not surprised as much
- 58:56with him. But other guys have spoken out
- 58:58around the league being like, eh, it is what it is you.
- 59:01Know I'm gonna wear it down, by the way, Mookie Betts.
- 59:06I've seen a lot more of that. I I think that might be the move
- 59:09now that he's the the infielder, yeah.
- 59:11Whatever. Yeah, I heard the the guys
- 59:14aren't able to get him tailored the way they the way they.
- 59:17Like the sizes are all off. It's it's just a mess.
- 59:22And so finishing up my thought the the fans who are just like,
- 59:26who cares, They're just uniforms.
- 59:28It's like, yes, yeah, I get it. We're not the ones wearing these
- 59:32on field, quote, UN quote, authentic uniforms, and it
- 59:35shouldn't really matter to us. But it's it's indicative of the
- 59:40direction of Major League Baseball to me that if you can't
- 59:44even get the uniform that represents the teams that these
- 59:48players play for and ultimately representing the league as a
- 59:53whole. If you can't even get that
- 59:55right, then what other corners are we cutting?
- 59:57What other ways are we trying to maximize profits at the at the
- 1:00:03cost or the sake of quality of product that we're whether it's
- 1:00:08on field, whether it's apparel whether it's TV deals whatever
- 1:00:13it is. What corners are we cutting as a
- 1:00:15league, Major League Baseball, where we're just trying to
- 1:00:19maximize the dollar and then slide it under the, sweep it
- 1:00:23under the rug under the guise of.
- 1:00:26Increased airflow, but it doesn't matter.
- 1:00:31Put these guys in pants that they can.
- 1:00:33Like, why are we talking about this?
- 1:00:35This shouldn't even be a topic of conversation.
- 1:00:37Why are we talking about see through baseball pants rolling
- 1:00:43into it? Rolling into spring training?
- 1:00:46I said this, I I tweeted this out yesterday, or it may have
- 1:00:49been even today, in reference to the MLB Network conversation
- 1:00:54that you and I were having. Oh yeah, where where you can't.
- 1:00:59If you're subscribed to MLBTV, you still don't have access to
- 1:01:04MLBTV or MLB Network. You have to have that through
- 1:01:07like a cable provider, to which I tweeted, So we pay 150 for
- 1:01:12MLBTV and we don't get access to MLB Network.
- 1:01:15Major League Baseball insists on getting and staying in its own
- 1:01:18way. The short sightedness of milking
- 1:01:20a percentage of fans for every last dollar instead of making
- 1:01:23the game accessible to countless fans and getting to a point of
- 1:01:26printing money is beyond counterproductive.
- 1:01:30That was in reference to the MLB Network again conversation you
- 1:01:33and I are having, but you could also apply that to these
- 1:01:36uniforms. It's like we're trying to map.
- 1:01:39You're rolling them out in the cheapest quality pants uniforms
- 1:01:44as a whole possible to maximize profits.
- 1:01:48Why not just go back to what we were doing when these when this
- 1:01:53wasn't a topic of conversation, and then we can worry about
- 1:01:57other things like, oh, I don't know, maybe ending blackouts.
- 1:02:00Yeah, I don't know dude. Two things Nike is gonna Nike.
- 1:02:08The other thing is, if for those unfamiliar, this is a 10 year
- 1:02:13agreement that started in 2020, so we're not even halfway there.
- 1:02:18Which to Clare, to clear something up, there's been
- 1:02:21there's been a lot of confusion in the comments and well, is it
- 1:02:25Nike? Is it Fanatics?
- 1:02:27Nike? They are designed by Nike, but
- 1:02:34they're manufactured by Fanatics.
- 1:02:36So really it's like a three headed monster we're dealing
- 1:02:39with here. Major League Baseball, Nike and
- 1:02:41Fanatics like everybody. You you could say, but I think
- 1:02:45the issue is possible for. The issue?
- 1:02:47Because if Nike's outsourcing their manufacturing to Fanatics,
- 1:02:50that's a Nike issue. And with Nike's logo on it
- 1:02:54instead of the Fanatics logo, you you can probably assume that
- 1:02:58Nike is gonna be the one to fix this.
- 1:03:01So yeah, it's bad. I I it makes me think of like,
- 1:03:07you remember that those like weird one or two years in the
- 1:03:10NBA where they had like short sleeve jerseys.
- 1:03:12That's what makes this this is just as catastrophic.
- 1:03:17This is just as bad. Do you remember those?
- 1:03:20Whereas like weird, it wasn't even like a short sleeve, but it
- 1:03:22wasn't. It was like a it's like a like a
- 1:03:25girl's short sleeve. I think.
- 1:03:27Fairly, That's the shoulder. But why do I remember LeBron
- 1:03:31being in Cleveland at that? Time.
- 1:03:33Yeah. OK.
- 1:03:33Like him and Kyrie were there together, Yeah.
- 1:03:35Yeah, I remember those shows you saw.
- 1:03:37It was hideous. Yeah, that's what.
- 1:03:39What? Are we doing?
- 1:03:40Yeah, these are like these are like, you know, Halloween
- 1:03:44costume Memo B jerseys. It to people say that it's not
- 1:03:51it's not a big deal that you can you can't really notice it.
- 1:03:54You can tell, you can tell what brand of, you can tell what
- 1:04:00brand of compression shorts these guys are wearing.
- 1:04:02Yeah, I mean, what are we doing? Yeah, you can definitely tell.
- 1:04:07We talked about the tops last week, but like you, I can't even
- 1:04:10read the names on the on the backs of jerseys right now.
- 1:04:14I can't even read them. It's so small and like the the
- 1:04:19lettering or like the lining around the letters, it's
- 1:04:22impossible. Well, I know like I said last
- 1:04:25week we talked about the tops and I I thought we were kind of
- 1:04:28going to be done with that. But since that conversation that
- 1:04:31we had more issues have come up with the Tops in in regards to
- 1:04:37the like the letter spacing now and the angling.
- 1:04:40I don't know if you saw. I think it was Michael Chavis in
- 1:04:45Seattle. His he took a picture of his
- 1:04:48uniform and I don't even think there was AII might be mistaken.
- 1:04:51I don't even think he put a caption.
- 1:04:52It was just like presented without comment essentially and
- 1:04:56the the number height was off. So I think he's yeah, he's 10,
- 1:05:00'cause he took over Kalnik's number.
- 1:05:01The one and the zero are like different heights and the the
- 1:05:06letter spacing is crooked and not not consistent across the
- 1:05:12like it's. And then I saw Ian Happ I think
- 1:05:17I posted it actually where it's like an H and an A and then a
- 1:05:24gap just like a triangular gap in the middle and then you got
- 1:05:27the two PS off like cock eyed off to the side and they're like
- 1:05:31grouped together and they gotta get it's just it's it's a mess
- 1:05:37it's a mess and the more that I see like at first I thought that
- 1:05:43it was just a letter size issue but like I said I'm I I've since
- 1:05:47been seeing more and more one off.
- 1:05:50I say one off, but unique issues that are coming up where for
- 1:05:55some it'll be the spacing for some of it'll be the letter size
- 1:05:58it'll be the letter, letter height and then it's.
- 1:06:04I I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:06:09Like they're not they're not even proofing these jerseys.
- 1:06:12They I think they just they they they throw the steam on there
- 1:06:16and they say let's move along. I don't, I don't understand,
- 1:06:22just be better. Trey Turner came out and said
- 1:06:24everyone hates them and I think as baseball fans we can go ahead
- 1:06:29and ignore like we talked about last week you can ignore all the
- 1:06:32Nike sponsored athletes who are coming out and trying to take a
- 1:06:37a phony stance for the they're getting paid to say that.
- 1:06:41Listen to guys like Trey who are just telling you how it is.
- 1:06:45You've got other player players posting about on social like
- 1:06:47what are we doing? Just fix the issue.
- 1:06:51How hard is it for Rob just for once do something right and
- 1:06:57don't wait to do it. At this point, it's our I, I
- 1:07:00would argue it's already too late, but how hard would it be
- 1:07:03for Rob Manfred to just come out and say, hey, you know, we got
- 1:07:06this, we got this wrong. We messed up.
- 1:07:09We're going to do what we need to do to fix it as the
- 1:07:13commissioner of Major League Baseball, regardless if it's a
- 1:07:15Nike issue, regardless, regardless if it's a fanatic's
- 1:07:18issue as the league that is rolling these uniforms out
- 1:07:22there, just come out and say, hey, look, we're going to go
- 1:07:26behind closed doors. We're going to get this ironed
- 1:07:29out, no pun intended. We're going to go ahead and get
- 1:07:32this fixed so that this isn't an issue anymore, so that this
- 1:07:36isn't a topic of conversation. Because it shouldn't be.
- 1:07:39Because it should have never happened in the 1st place.
- 1:07:41Because we're better than that. Because we're Major League
- 1:07:43Baseball, That's all. How hard would it be to do that?
- 1:07:45But he doesn't. And Tony Clark, I trust that man
- 1:07:51gets stuff done. I mean, he came out and said
- 1:07:58that it's, you know, it's disappointing, he said.
- 1:08:02Each conversation with the guys is yielding more information
- 1:08:05with what we're seeing. A lot of the rhetoric is
- 1:08:08confirmation that the pants are see through.
- 1:08:10It's been an ongoing conversation where each day has
- 1:08:13yielded something new. As I was saying, that doesn't
- 1:08:16seem to make as much sense as you would like it.
- 1:08:18It's it's literally there's a new issue coming up with these
- 1:08:22things each and every day and it's.
- 1:08:24Well, look, when you talk about how guys get a percentage of
- 1:08:27jersey sales, then if jersey sales are gonna be down because
- 1:08:30of the quality of jersey that's being made and printed and sent
- 1:08:33out there, there you go, Someone's gonna step in and big
- 1:08:42white bearded Tony Clark is gonna put an end to this
- 1:08:45nonsense. That beard is impeccable.
- 1:08:51It's pristine. I'll give him that.
- 1:08:55All right. I don't want to talk about
- 1:08:56uniforms anymore. It all I all I'm saying is it
- 1:08:59just fix it before opening day. Like, sure, whatever.
- 1:09:02We can have a circus out there for spring training.
- 1:09:04I don't really care. Not that many people are
- 1:09:07watching. Just have it fixed.
- 1:09:08But by opening day, it's really not that big of a deal.
- 1:09:10And spare me on the whole, like inventory issue or whatever.
- 1:09:13Yeah, give them away. Give them away to Little leagues
- 1:09:18where they belong 'cause these are Little League.
- 1:09:20These are Little League products and I'm sure they would benefit
- 1:09:23from, I mean, talk about a great PR move, say, hey, we messed up,
- 1:09:27but you know what? We're gonna, I mean, I mean,
- 1:09:30these are grown men uniforms, so it may not work with Little
- 1:09:33League. Don't overthink it.
- 1:09:35You get what I'm saying. Like some a lot of these Nike
- 1:09:39crap products, I'm sure it could benefit somebody.
- 1:09:42So just give them away and let's start fresh.
- 1:09:44That's that's all we need to do. Easy fix MLB closing the book
- 1:09:50here. Unless you wanted to get to
- 1:09:52anything else. I'm out of it.
- 1:09:56I believe, yeah. Last week, Netflix announced via
- 1:10:01Twitter that they will be releasing a documentary on the
- 1:10:10exodus, if you will, of the Montreal Expos, and they tweeted
- 1:10:15out. They said, the tweet said.
- 1:10:17In 2004, Quebec's beloved Expos left Montreal.
- 1:10:21A new documentary coming to Netflix will explore the
- 1:10:23setbacks that led to the baseball team's departure and
- 1:10:26how it continues to spark debate 20 years later.
- 1:10:31And then I believe the president of the production team, which I
- 1:10:35believe is called attraction, Richard Spears, said, quote, The
- 1:10:40Expos were the first MLB team outside of the US, and despite
- 1:10:44their departure from Montreal, they continue to have passionate
- 1:10:47fans to this day. This film will tell the story of
- 1:10:50the team through the eyes of those who lived it.
- 1:10:53I'm going to be. I'm going to be tuning into
- 1:10:55this. Guys, will I When does that come
- 1:10:57out? I want to say this year, let me
- 1:11:03double check. That's it.
- 1:11:07Until we get Netflix can't fill us in in a little bit more.
- 1:11:12I'm sure there was some follow up.
- 1:11:14Let's see, 'cause I know next year, presumably.
- 1:11:20I'm assuming next year will be the Red Sox doc.
- 1:11:25Yeah, filmed this year, Released next year, right?
- 1:11:28Yeah. Well, I'm just saying I don't.
- 1:11:31I'm assuming they're not gonna crank that out, like right after
- 1:11:36the season. I'm sure we're gonna have to sit
- 1:11:38on that. Yeah, I'm not seeing.
- 1:11:40I'm not seeing when it's gonna be released, I would venture.
- 1:11:46This year I love that Netflix is getting into this though 2
- 1:11:49Baseball Documentaries From Netflix Never a bad thing.
- 1:11:55It's gonna force me to sign up for Netflix again.
- 1:11:58For Netflix, yeah, yeah, they're cranking out some over the last
- 1:12:02handful of years. They're cranking out some
- 1:12:03quality sports stocks. I will say, 'cause I forgot that
- 1:12:08I think in Next or not next last dance originated on Netflix.
- 1:12:14Right, and it migrated to. No, I think it migrated to ESPN
- 1:12:19Plus, but I think it started on Netflix.
- 1:12:21I think it's the other way around.
- 1:12:27I'm like 99% sure it's. I'm like 99% sure.
- 1:12:32How do you how do you feel about that then?
- 1:12:41OK, it said the series was released weekly from April 19th
- 1:12:45to the April 19th, 2020 to May 17th, 2020.
- 1:12:49Episodes were released on Netflix the day after their ESPN
- 1:12:51airing. OK, point taken, point taken.
- 1:12:55But still there, there have been some, some they're they're
- 1:13:00showing up in the sports. World they are the full swing
- 1:13:04bringing that back. I'm excited.
- 1:13:06The racing one. They're doing good.
- 1:13:11Good for Netflix. I'm about it.
- 1:13:14Still not ready to drop $18.00 a month on them?
- 1:13:17That's insane, isn't it? Up to like 1599 I.
- 1:13:20Don't know. No, I'm not doing it, though.
- 1:13:22I got enough going on. Enough.
- 1:13:24Enough subscriptions. Yeah, until they partner with
- 1:13:28something else. And when you when Netflix
- 1:13:32decides to go buy MLB or something brings in MLB Network,
- 1:13:37that's when I'll pull the trigger trigger.
- 1:13:40But everyone else is like, hey, you want Disney?
- 1:13:45I've got Hulu like everything else is partnered.
- 1:13:48Netflix is like, Nah, we're just gonna stay on our own thing.
- 1:13:52How about we just burn it all and just go back to cable like
- 1:13:57we originally planned? This is getting out of control,
- 1:14:00dude. The streaming is is out of
- 1:14:02control. I can't with these subscriptions
- 1:14:04anymore. Everything is subscription now.
- 1:14:07Everything. Sure is.
- 1:14:13I hate it. Then it's like only some of them
- 1:14:17get rights to some things. It does make me miss cable.
- 1:14:24I get it. I mean, we're basically paying.
- 1:14:27The same as what we did for cable.
- 1:14:29No, no. What I'm saying is like we're
- 1:14:31we're ultimately paying for the the freedom and the flexibility
- 1:14:34to watch what we want when we when we want it.
- 1:14:37But it's like in terms of content, it's so scattered and
- 1:14:40spread out. Right.
- 1:14:42It's like can we if there's if there's something out there, can
- 1:14:46somebody tell me like if is, is there like a a la carte option
- 1:14:51where you you just pick what you want and just pay like a
- 1:14:55singular fee. There is, and it's not legal.
- 1:14:59OK, well, I'm not. We can have that conversation
- 1:15:01all fair. My mom and step dad use it and
- 1:15:04it is very spotty but they have like 18,000 channels and this
- 1:15:12just little app that they download that probably is taking
- 1:15:16over their little fire stick. But it works.
- 1:15:20We'll we'll take that off here. We'll take that off here.
- 1:15:23Anything else you got before we head out of here it?
- 1:15:30Feels good to be able to just throw a game on during your work
- 1:15:33day. Sure does.
- 1:15:34I missed it. I missed that.
- 1:15:37It does feel great. I will report back after after
- 1:15:44my spring training experience. What day is that?
- 1:15:49You said Saturday. Nice.
- 1:15:51OK. Yeah, we're looking forward to
- 1:15:53hearing it. Catching Chris Stapleton Friday
- 1:15:55night, Spring Training Saturday. It's gonna be a good weekend,
- 1:15:59Real good weekend, I'll let you know.
- 1:16:02I will report back on my findings with the menu as well
- 1:16:07as always. If if this Joey Votto third host
- 1:16:14thing doesn't work out, let me run it by run it by Yamamoto OK
- 1:16:21and see if we if he has any interest in.
- 1:16:24I'll snag him. Being our full time third host.
- 1:16:28I like that. We can snag him in between start
- 1:16:32days it it'll be fine. It'll work.
- 1:16:35I am gonna be real bummed if Ohtani's the on the Split squad
- 1:16:39in Milwaukee, but I went with like the I'm thinking superstars
- 1:16:44are going to be at home for Split.
- 1:16:46Squad. Isn't that how?
- 1:16:47Correct me if I'm wrong, Isn't that usually how honest?
- 1:16:50I don't know, but I I just assumed don't they For split
- 1:16:53squad days? Don't they just keep guys at
- 1:16:55home? I think for the most part, I
- 1:16:57think it depends on the position too.
- 1:16:59But obviously, like the Dodgers roster is pretty figured out.
- 1:17:06I don't think there's a whole lot of position competition
- 1:17:10going on, so I hope so, yeah. But they're deep enough to where
- 1:17:15there's going to be names on the road and at home like you're, I
- 1:17:18mean, you're not going to have like maybe the names, yeah, on
- 1:17:21the road. But you if they keep their stars
- 1:17:24home, you'll have, you'll have some names on the road wherever
- 1:17:27they're at. So yeah, looking forward to
- 1:17:30hearing how that goes. But other than that, Oh yeah.
