- 0:00Speaker 1: What's better than two hours of Mark Simone?
- 0:03Speaker 2: Three.
- 0:04Speaker 1: The Mark Simone Show. Now nine till noon weekdays.
- 0:10Speaker 3: 710WOR.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hey, let's take some calls. Let's go to Will in Charlotte,
- 0:15Speaker 1: North Carolina. Will, how you doing?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Hey, Mark. Love your show. Listen, I've got an answer
- 0:22Speaker 3: for where to put those data centers.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:24Speaker 3: You're a big Sopranos fan, right? Yeah.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Yeah, so you remember the opening of The Sopranos and
- 0:30Speaker 3: Tony Soprano's driving down the New Jersey Turnpike.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:34Speaker 3: And he's going past refineries and old chemical plants and
- 0:38Speaker 3: Superfund sites. That's the perfect place to put those data centers.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Well, but there's no room there. First of all, it's crowded.
- 0:45Speaker 1: There's a million things there. No land. And it costs
- 0:49Speaker 1: a fortune for land there. You've got to put them somewhere.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Knock a few buildings down. Those people are going to
- 0:54Speaker 3: afford it.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Hey, what about Charlotte, North Carolina, where you are? Let's
- 0:57Speaker 1: put it there. You don't need that Charlotte Speedway, do you?
- 0:59Speaker 4: Sure, why not?
- 0:59Speaker 3: Maybe I'll have to lower my property taxes a little bit,
- 1:03Speaker 3: although they're a heck of a lot lower than they
- 1:04Speaker 3: used to be up in New Jersey. Yeah.
- 1:06Speaker 1: No, actually it does. It will lower your taxes. They
- 1:10Speaker 1: figured out how to create their own water and recycle
- 1:12Speaker 1: it and use their own electricity. The problem is it
- 1:15Speaker 1: makes noise, a lot of noise from data centers. So
- 1:17Speaker 1: you've got to put them like half a mile away
- 1:19Speaker 1: from everybody. Let's go to Phil, Suffolk County. Phil, how
- 1:24Speaker 1: are you?
- 1:25Speaker 4: Yes, hello, Mark, and thank you for taking my call.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Where are you in Suffolk County?
- 1:31Speaker 3: Northport.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Northport. Is that Suffolk? Oh, yeah, it is. Northport. You
- 1:35Speaker 1: got that new restaurant right on the water there, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: you got the hotel there.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It was very nice. We had this annual Cow Harbor
- 1:41Speaker 4: Day where people run around and shut down the streets.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 4: But anyway.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It's a wonderful event. Actually, it's an annoying event. Just
- 1:51Speaker 1: stay the hell away from Northport that day. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 1: it's a wonderful event, yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yes. Mark, would you agree with me that the disturbing
- 1:59Speaker 4: trend about this Lindsay Clancy is the fact that there
- 2:02Speaker 4: are two other women that have come out and have
- 2:05Speaker 4: used her in context of them murdering their own children?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah, very good point.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I feel that Lindsay should be held accountable. contemptible for that.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with that holdout, Jura. You're right. It's horrible.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And then the other trend is, what is it with
- 2:20Speaker 1: these left-wing kooks with the killers and the murderers? Luigi Mangione,
- 2:25Speaker 1: Lindsay Clancy. They have this whole new trend now of
- 2:29Speaker 1: there are justified murders. It wasn't their fault. It's got
- 2:34Speaker 1: to stop. That holdout, Jura, that's a hero there. Let's
- 2:38Speaker 1: go to Bob in Short Hills. Bob, how you doing?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Hey, Mark.
- 2:42Speaker 4: How are you?
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's good.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I'm cool, Eric. I got two topics if you have time.
- 2:46Speaker 4: First one, about two months ago, you kind of poo-pooed
- 2:49Speaker 4: the induction of Chubby Checker into the Hall of Fame.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And I'm just wondering, can you think of anyone else
- 2:56Speaker 4: in the rock world that had such an influence on
- 2:59Speaker 4: that music?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yes, of course, easily. Easily, easily, easily. Like everybody else. Hey,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I love Chubby Checker. He's a very nice guy. And
- 3:11Speaker 1: he had the record called The Twist. It was a
- 3:13Speaker 1: big hit, but he was not a major influence. Stop
- 3:16Speaker 1: saying my name.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Over and over.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's annoying.
- 3:19Speaker 4: He had a worldwide mania. He put people on a
- 3:21Speaker 4: dance floor who hated to get on the dance floor.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I hate to break it to you, but they were
- 3:25Speaker 1: dancing long before Chubby Checker. He's a great guy. It
- 3:28Speaker 1: was a great hit record, but it wasn't.
- 3:30Speaker 4: A major influence. Joey D and the Starlighters, one of
- 3:33Speaker 4: the biggest venues in New York for a couple of years.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Okay, but if you went to the Peppermint Lounge... And
- 3:39Speaker 1: stayed there for five hours. You'd notice they played 6,000
- 3:42Speaker 1: other artists. It wasn't just Chubby Checker.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Yeah, but he created that venue. It was he who
- 3:48Speaker 4: did that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: First of all, let's go to Chuck Berry. Now, here's
- 3:51Speaker 1: a guy who was one of the most influential guys
- 3:53Speaker 1: to me who really pioneered the modern-day rock and roll.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Even the Beatles will tell you they were copying Chuck Berry.
- 3:59Speaker 1: There's nobody telling you they're copying Chubby Checker.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Well, you know, there are a lot of people that
- 4:06Speaker 4: copy Chubby Checkers who had offshoots of his song, The Twist,
- 4:09Speaker 4: slow twisting.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a big fad for two years with
- 4:12Speaker 1: The Twist. Now, yeah. Oh, wait, no, wait, forget it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Stop for a second. Stop. Now lie down on the couch.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Lie down. We're going to have to psychoanalyze you. What
- 4:21Speaker 1: is this obsession with Chubby Checker all about? Where did
- 4:24Speaker 1: this come from?
- 4:25Speaker 4: I believe he should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 4:27Speaker 4: He had 10 different dance songs, the Limbo, the Huckled Bar.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Okay, these were all cheap fads. I mean, they were
- 4:33Speaker 1: very good. The Limbo was a big fad for a year.
- 4:36Speaker 1: These were fad records, novelty records.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Okay, I got another question for you.
- 4:40Speaker 1: No, seriously, what is this Chubby Checker obsession?
- 4:43Speaker 4: No, I think he's worthy of going into the Rock
- 4:46Speaker 4: and Roll Hall of Fame.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He's worthy because there's nobody left. All the greats went
- 4:48Speaker 1: in first. You know, I love that Gilbert O'Sullivan with
- 4:51Speaker 1: Remember Alone Again Naturally. I love those records. He had
- 4:54Speaker 1: three or four great, but he's not a rock and
- 4:56Speaker 1: roll hall of fame guy. He was not a big influence.
- 4:59Speaker 1: He was a silly little guy with a couple of
- 5:00Speaker 1: nice hits.
- 5:01Speaker 4: 40 chart, 40 chart songs. That's pretty good. Let me,
- 5:04Speaker 4: one other thing. I'll give you another one. Anecdotally, I
- 5:07Speaker 4: wonder if you could talk about a restaurant you probably
- 5:10Speaker 4: knew closed about 10 years ago in the meatpacking district,
- 5:14Speaker 4: Italian restaurant, famous, maybe you can call it infamous, probably
- 5:18Speaker 4: frequented by Vincent. Uh, do you know the name of it?
- 5:21Speaker 4: And what it closed? And I wonder if you had
- 5:22Speaker 4: an anecdotes.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Um, I'm blanking out. It was a little post or something.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Um, on the Brogy street.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Ponties.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Oh, parties. Oh, I thought that's, is that, is that,
- 5:35Speaker 1: that's not really the meatpacking district. That's like on the water.
- 5:39Speaker 4: It's not, well, they say it's meatpacking or, uh, uh,
- 5:42Speaker 4: on the West side highway.
- 5:42Speaker 1: No, there was a great Italian restaurant in the meatpacking district.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's closed because, uh, Google bought the whole building. It's,
- 5:48Speaker 1: it's actually, uh, where the Crane Club is now in
- 5:50Speaker 1: that building. But, you know, Ponte's was an old landmark,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but didn't somebody in that whole deal, somebody involved in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the restaurant get indicted?
- 5:59Speaker 4: Well, it was a big family feud over the proceeds
- 6:02Speaker 4: of his, he had about 30 real estate.
- 6:04Speaker 1: No, but I don't know who, somebody involved in that
- 6:06Speaker 1: whole restaurant got indicted or went to jail, something like that, right?
- 6:09Speaker 4: I didn't know that, but, you know, he sold that
- 6:11Speaker 4: property for $ 115 million in 19, 19, I'm sorry, 2010.
- 6:17Speaker 1: No, I was actually there a couple of times. Ponty
- 6:20Speaker 1: was a landmark over there. Let's go to the expert.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Vincent and Brooklyn, we only got about 30 seconds. Do
- 6:25Speaker 1: you remember Ponty's?
- 6:27Speaker 2: No, I don't, Mark. But speaking about a place you
- 6:29Speaker 2: just mentioned, I used to hang out there a lot
- 6:32Speaker 2: at the Bossett Hotel, a beautiful hotel. In fact, somebody,
- 6:37Speaker 2: an acquaintance of mine, one night went up in there,
- 6:42Speaker 2: took a half a bottle of sleeping pills and drank
- 6:44Speaker 2: a half a bottle of scotch and took his own life.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But me and my friends used to hang out there.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Sounds like a wonderful hotel. Now, what did you and
- 6:51Speaker 1: your friends do there, or shouldn't we ask?
- 6:53Speaker 4: Oh, well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 1: We got it.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Well, anyway. They had a great lounge. The lobby of
- 7:00Speaker 2: the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. I hope they don't destroy it.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's on Montague Street and Hick Street. And we used
- 7:08Speaker 2: to go there, especially the lounge was open until 3
- 7:14Speaker 2: at night. And I used to live in Brooklyn Heights
- 7:17Speaker 2: at the time. And it was a great place to
- 7:21Speaker 2: hang out.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Like the Roberts Lodge in Goodfellas, that kind of place?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, but Eva Mara probably knows it. It's on
- 7:30Speaker 2: the corner of Vincent.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Well, Vincent, we've got to go because we've got to
- 7:33Speaker 1: do the news. But call tomorrow. We've got more time tomorrow.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Thanks for calling. When we come back, the greatest pollster
- 7:38Speaker 1: in the world, the real polls, not the fake polls
- 7:40Speaker 1: you see in public. We'll get to the real polls
- 7:43Speaker 1: coming up next. John McLaughlin will be with us on 710WOR.
