- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We writers often talk about the reasons that we like to write, but what are the reasons that we don't write?
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: What keeps us from writing?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Well, there's several things that come to mind.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: One is procrastination, of course.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Another one is not having enough time, maybe another is not feeling creative, but at the end of the day, there is one main thing that really keeps us from writing.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: The novelist Erica Jong hit the nail on the head when she said this.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I went for years not finishing anything, because of course, when you finish something, you can be judged.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Wow, that is a powerful quote, and we can probably all relate to that.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Well, we're all writers here and we all understand each other, so let's take a moment for a little bit of honesty.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Is there somebody in your life that you're afraid of disappointing with your writing?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Is there somebody that you're afraid who will judge you when you put your writing out there?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a parent or a sibling.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a teacher.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a friend of yours who has a popular blog or who's published a few books.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So imagine that you put your writing out there and they don't like it.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Maybe they express some disappointment or maybe they leave a bad review on Amazon.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Then they move on with their life and they promptly forget about it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But that's about the extent of it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: At its worst, being judged or critiqued by somebody just means that your writing was not for them.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Yet in our minds, we're terrified of disappointing somebody.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: We let this fear of judgment keep us from creating writing that 99 other people will love when there might be that one person who doesn't love it.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So finish your writing and do the work.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Chances are pretty high that the 99 will love it, and that one person who might not like it, that just means it wasn't for them.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Think about that one person you're most afraid of disappointing.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: What's the worst that could happen if you put your work out there and they don't like it?
