- 1:16SpaceX just set a secondary share price of $421.00 per
- 1:21share, valuing Elon Musk's rocket company at roughly $800
- 1:26billion. On October, Sam Altman's Open AI
- 1:31had reached a $500 billion valuation, making it the most
- 1:34valuable private company in the world.
- 1:36SpaceX held that title before Open AI took it.
- 1:39Now Musk is taking it back, and the gap is not even close.
- 1:42The $800 billion figure comes from an internal tender offer
- 1:46where employees and early investors can share sell shares
- 1:49to approved buyers. So what happens when two of the
- 1:52biggest names in tech are racing each other to the top spot on a
- 1:55list that did not exist even 10 years ago?
- 1:58And the rivalry between Musk and Altman started when they Co
- 2:01founded Open AI together in 2015 that was turned into a public
- 2:06valuation war. We're going to cover the new
- 2:08SpaceX numbers, the IPO plans for 2026, why Google is about
- 2:13the book, a massive paper gain from all of this, and what the
- 2:16secondary sale tells us about where private tech valuations
- 2:20are headed. And we'll get right back into
- 2:22this right after the short break.
- 2:25Spacex's 800 dollar, $800 billion valuation was discussed
- 2:30by the company's board at Star Base in Texas.
- 2:32And the company is also preparing for a possible IPO in
- 2:35late 2026. They could raise more than $30
- 2:39billion. If that happens, it would be the
- 2:42largest public offering ever, beating Saudi Aramco's $29
- 2:47billion listing in 2019. Now, here's the key point.
- 2:52This is not a fundraising round. SpaceX has been doing that for
- 2:55years. SpaceX is not raising new
- 2:57capital with this transaction. It is a secondary share sale,
- 3:01which means existing shareholders like employees and
- 3:04early investors can shell sell their stakes to approved buyers.
- 3:09Now, SpaceX runs these tender offers twice a year to give
- 3:12people liquidity. In July, the share price was
- 3:15$212. Now it's 421.
- 3:21They doubled it in six months, and the company told
- 3:24shareholders it's preparing for a 2026 IPO that would fund what
- 3:29the internal memo called an insane flight rate for the
- 3:32Starship rocket, artificial intelligent data centers in
- 3:35space, and a base on the moon. Now, Musk confirmed the IPO
- 3:39plans on X this week, responding to Eric Berger with the words,
- 3:43as usual, Eric is accurate. Now, the target valuation for
- 3:46the IPO is $1.5 trillion. That would put SpaceX in the
- 3:51same range as Meta or Amazon. All right, let's keep going
- 3:55here. The October secondary sale at
- 3:58Open AI valued the company at $500 billion after employees
- 4:02sold about 6.6 billion in stock to investors, including Thrive
- 4:07Capital, SoftBank and Abu Dhabi G or MGX.
- 4:11Now, that deal pushed Open AI past SpaceX, which have been
- 4:15valued at 400 billion, and Musk let Altman hold that lead for
- 4:19about two months. Now.
- 4:20SpaceX is $300 billion ahead now.
- 4:24The Musk and Altman rivalry runs deeper than valuations, though
- 4:28runs deeper than money. They Co founded Open AI together
- 4:31in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab, and Musk left in 2018 and
- 4:36later started his own AI company, XAI.
- 4:40He since sued Open AI multiple times, accusing it of abandoning
- 4:44its original nonprofit mission. After taking billions from
- 4:48Microsoft, Open AI is now restructuring into a for profit
- 4:52company, which would allow it to pursue its own IPO down the
- 4:55road. Alphabet, Google's parent
- 4:59company, is about to book another sizable paper gain money
- 5:02money because of Spacex's new valuation.
- 5:05Alphabet has been an investor in SpaceX since at least 2015 and
- 5:08when it joined Fidelity and a billion dollar funding round for
- 5:11a combined stake of about 10% at the time.
- 5:14In April 2025, Alphabet disclosed an $8 billion
- 5:18unrealized gain tied to its SpaceX investment after a tender
- 5:21offer valued the company at 350 billion.
- 5:24Now, that gain helped push Alphabet's quarterly net income
- 5:2746% higher than the prior year, with SpaceX now valued at more
- 5:31than double that figure. Investors are expecting another
- 5:34accounting boost when Alphabet reports earnings.
- 5:39So what do we know right now? What's going on?
- 5:41Spaces is expected to generate about $15 billion in revenue in
- 5:452025 and between 2020, 22 billion and 24 billion in 2026.
- 5:52Most of that comes from Starlink, the satellite Internet
- 5:54service that now has thousands of satellites in orbit and
- 5:57serves millions of people. The company already launches
- 6:00more than 80% of global payload weight through its Falcon 9,
- 6:04which is reusable and reliable enough to handle government
- 6:07contracts and commercial customers.
- 6:09And the IPO timeline is not locked in, though SpaceX CFO
- 6:13Brett Johnson said in an internal memo the timing could
- 6:16change and the company may decide not to even move forward
- 6:19with it. Market conditions, regulatory
- 6:21factors and execution on Starship all play into that
- 6:24decision. The company had previously
- 6:26floated the idea of spinning off Starlink for a separate IPO, but
- 6:30the current plan is to list everything the entire company
- 6:33that would give public investors exposure to both the launch
- 6:36business and the satellite Internet business in one
- 6:39offering. And here's the bigger picture.
- 6:43This valuation race isn't just about their egos.
- 6:47Could be between Altman and Elon.
- 6:51It's about how much money is flowing into frontier technology
- 6:55companies. SpaceX wants to make life multi
- 6:57planetary open. EA wants to build artificial
- 6:59general intelligence. Both ideas sounded like science
- 7:03fiction about 10 years ago. Now they're attracting hundreds
- 7:06of billions of dollars in private capital to do those
- 7:08things. AI, robotics, and defense tech
- 7:11startups have hit all time highs of multibillion dollar
- 7:15valuations in this past year, and the SpaceX and Open AI
- 7:19valuations are the most visible examples.
- 7:22But they're part of a broader surge now.
- 7:25The valuation Musk is setting now is designed to level set the
- 7:30company's fair market value before their IPO.
- 7:33If the tender offer succeeds at 421 per share and the IPO
- 7:38proceeds in late 2026, SpaceX would be positioned as one of
- 7:42the largest public companies in the world.
- 7:45Alphabet would see its stake jump even higher in value.
- 7:49Employees who held shares through multiple tender rounds
- 7:51would be sitting on a lot of money, and Musk would have
- 7:54reclaimed the title of running the most valuable private
- 7:57company, at least until the IPO paperwork is filed.
