- 1:30today's episode of The Todmatter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar,
- 1:46Hi Maybe and Mapes. They gave you a telephone in your room. That's
- 1:51the only thing good about it. Well, I suppose to design to make
- 1:53a man impatient. You're a pretty lucky fell at that. Let me tell
- 1:57you about your operation. Yeah, please, do you stop? Two slugs
- 2:01They probably went out of your neck and another one out of your rip gates.
- 2:05Missed your heart by a snake's whisker. I was luckier than Gloria Tierney.
- 2:08Yeah, as you were. I'm on my way up to see you.
- 2:13Don't run out on me. Fat chance tonight and every weekday night.

- 2:29America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators Truley Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by special investigator Johnny
- 2:46Dollar to four State Insurance Company, Wilmington, Delaware. The following is an
- 2:51accounting of expendit yours during my investigation of the Todd Matter expense account. I
- 2:59am eleven dollars and five cents breakfast. I got mad at the nurse when
- 3:02she brought in a bowl of hot cereal and a glass of milk. So
- 3:07I bribed and orderly to slip across the street and get me a tray of
- 3:08bacon and eggs. I was just finishing same When up came Sergeant Mapes.
- 3:14He looked haggard and tired and worried. You nearly got it for good,
- 3:17baby, I ain't got enough of it. You sure did. What do
- 3:21you remember if anything? Well, we tailed Melvin Charles to an apartment house.
- 3:27We stepped inside and somebody began trying to kill me, and that's when
- 3:30I left town. Yeah, it was quite a mess. Corner had a
- 3:34real job in his hands. Hey, how about you? Not a scratch
- 3:38coroner? Did you say? Yeah, Alb Charles got it. Her husband
- 3:42stepped to but your knife in her back. That was for trying to sell
- 3:45him out to you. Yeah, yeah, maybe he thought he was worth
- 3:49more than twenty five hundred. Maybe. Man named Henderson who happened to be
- 3:53walking down the hall at the wrong minute, took three in the head.
- 3:55He was dead before he hit the floor. A woman in the street got
- 3:59hit, not too bad. Two people outside just getting into a car got
- 4:01cut up pretty bad when bullets smashed their windshield. You keeping track of all
- 4:06this, I'm trying to This all happened after we got there. Huh.
- 4:11Yeah, you see when you and I walked in there, William Charles had
- 4:14just finished killing his wife. He saw us and began pumping. You got
- 4:16hit, and I pumped back at him. You get him? Yeah,
- 4:19but Natalie had shot up everybody else. He's on the floor above you,
- 4:24hanging on by a hair. He knew his ticket was up, and he
- 4:28just didn't care. It's my fault you're here, baby. I'd rather cut
- 4:31off my arm than get you in on this. What do you mean I'll
- 4:34tagging you and going after it. I didn't use my head, and I
- 4:39what what? I still think you're a pretty good copper. Mapes, thanks,
- 4:44Jenny here. I brought you a book of poetry. Poetry reed.
- 4:48Take it easy. We'll be talking again soon. I felt awful. Sergeant
- 4:56Mapes dropped in later that afternoon, but I was half asleep. Vaguely I
- 5:00remember the wheelchair with me down the hall for X rays and laptists. Expense
- 5:13account had him twelve ten cents. The morning paper, the story of the
- 5:16shooting was splashed all over page one, and the solution to the Gloria Turney
- 5:20killing in part slugs from William Charles's gun were matched with those that had killed
- 5:26Gloria Turney. I'll mention was made of any loot from the Todd burglary being
- 5:30found in the Charles apartment between back rubs and sleeping pills. I worried about
- 5:34that. I didn't worry too much about the fact that William Charles killer gunman
- 5:40burglar was dying in the room directly above me. About midnight. May have
- 5:44showed up with a wheelchair. Here we are, now you all ready to
- 5:50go up and see what he has to say. He's assuring you, so
- 5:54I still have to finish my job. Let's take it easy now, ay
- 5:58week, that won't last long there, Oh, there we go, bady.
- 6:09It was the second time within a week I had been in a hospital
- 6:12room with a dying person. The first one had been a young and beautiful
- 6:15woman who had been shot by the man who now laid dying at police bullets.
- 6:20What did they what they say? You know what they say, Charles.
- 6:26You haven't got a prayer. I didn't mean to kill Gloria. I
- 6:33didn't mean at all. Want you to know that you take a lot of
- 6:36pains to do it. I was there, remember, yeah, I remember,
- 6:43sorry, doing pretty good with those those house jobs. Todd placed another
- 6:49one, Saint Louis, all right, I have to buy a nice car,
- 6:54live in a decent place, get wrong, a little bit work all.
- 7:00Met her. I liked her. I wanted to marry I did.
- 7:05Really did you already had a wife? You think I'm kidding? I gave
- 7:13her him in coat, didn't I thought that it's since she didn't want to
- 7:18take it. Told me she was going to marry some other guy, some
- 7:23guys sho'd been married to before I got mad. I came back that night.
- 7:30Let her have it at all. That's all. That's it, that's
- 7:36it. Mister had taken to leave. How did you meet her, you
- 7:43tue friend? None of business? All right, this is my business.
- 7:46Where's the rest of the stuff? What stuff? The stuff you took from
- 7:49the todd place? Where have you got it? What's funny? You?
- 7:55You think i'd tell you that? What's the difference? Now? Come on?
- 8:00What's a difference now? Oh? It's a line? You know you
- 8:03know what? I'd die before I tell you. He died and he didn't
- 8:13tell me not a word. Later, a private ambulance took me from police
- 8:22emergency hospital to my hotel room. Three days after that, I was able
- 8:26to get back on my feet. I went right down to Mapes' office at
- 8:30the headquarters. How do you feel better? Know? Oh? Are you
- 8:33sure? Look cloudsy? Here? Sit down baby? All right? Thanks?
- 8:39Should you be out of bed? Yeah? Sure, sure, you're
- 8:41a lying and you know it. I suppose. So how's it going?
- 8:45You mean? Have we located the rest of the stuff? No, not
- 8:48a lick of it. Any guy wasn't he? He had his last laugh?
- 8:52You shouldn't be worrying about this stuff now. You ought to be taking
- 8:56care of yourself. Am I'm sitting here helping you worry. I'm not worried
- 9:01about anything. Get worried about the same thing I am. Where's all the
- 9:03rest of the todd stuff? It'll turn up somewhere. Why mister dollar,
- 9:20Hello, missus Stromberger. I read about what happened to you in the papers.
- 9:24I'm sorry, I'm terribly sorry. Oh well, I'm better now come
- 9:28in, Come in please? Thanks. So you you'd better sit down,
- 9:33mister dollar. I'll get you a cup of coffee. Do you have any
- 9:37bourbon? Well? Yes? I think all right? Is water? Okay?
- 9:43Yeah? Sure? Fine? Should you be out of bed, mister
- 9:48dollar? You know everybody? Yes? No, No, I shouldn't then
- 9:52yet I should well? Here you are. Oh thanks, Oh, here's
- 9:58cheers. Remember the night Gloria was shut? Of course, very well.
- 10:05You know I haven't worried about that night. Huh. Remember I came over
- 10:11here and I told you I was in the insurance business, and you said
- 10:13you'd have her call me when she came in. Yes, well, I
- 10:18remember pretty clearly you said you'd have her call me when she came in,
- 10:22not if you saw her come in. Yes, stood up. Uh huh.
- 10:26You saw to it that she called me missus Stromberg. You also saw
- 10:30to it that she wasn't here to meet me when I got here. She
- 10:33was out out there somewhere, because by then you knew I was an insurance
- 10:37investigator. I don't understand you, mister dollar. What do you to send
- 10:41her out so he could take care of her? And you were waiting in
- 10:45the hall for me, waiting for you. I know, I happened to
- 10:50see you, and I wondered, you wondered what kind of cock and bull
- 10:52story you could give me to get rid of me. That's silly, I
- 10:56saw that way A good drink, but not so silly if you knew that
- 11:03coach he was wearing was stolen, and that I was after it and her.
- 11:07How would I possibly know that? Because you introduced her to one of
- 11:09your friends one night, and he went overboard for her and eventually he gave
- 11:13her that little present. Are you saying that I had anything to do with
- 11:18Gloria's trouble? Yeah? Why that's silly. Oh here's something sillier. A
- 11:22small time burglar and thief lay in a hospital bed yesterday and wouldn't tell me
- 11:26how he met Gloria Tierney. Oh he was a real gallant one, this
- 11:30bird. He killed an innocent girl because she was wearing a mink coat.
- 11:33Might tell me who gave it to her? Mister down He shot up two
- 11:37or three people in an apartment, including me. He got shot himself.
- 11:41He knew he was dying, but a simple thing like telling me how he
- 11:45met it wouldn't come out. He wouldn't tell me that for anything. Now,
- 11:48where could he meet her? Was he her kind? Did he go
- 11:52on the same circles? Did he? Nah? He was introduced by a
- 11:56mutual friend, Missus Stromberg, You the manager of the apartment house. No,
- 12:01something else. He wouldn't tell me what happened to the rest of the
- 12:05loot from the Todd burglary. Two things. He wouldn't tell me. He
- 12:09didn't have to when I sat down and thought it out. You've been working
- 12:11with him right along. You've been keeping all the stuff here. That's fantastic.
- 12:16Not so fantastic at all, Missus Stromberg. When you think that his
- 12:18wife, and she was a girl who do anything for money. They tell
- 12:22me it was wanting to sell him to me for twenty five hundred bucks.
- 12:24Twenty five hundred bucks when there's still over sixty thousand dollars worth of loot from
- 12:30the Todd burglary lying around. She didn't know where it was. But you
- 12:35do, Missus Stromberg. Well, if you say I do, I do?
- 12:41Now what let's go down to Sergeant Mapes. Oh no, what I'd
- 12:45like a good excuse to use this? Yes, I suppose you would.
- 12:52If I can't charm you or plead with you, can I buy you?
- 12:58You could have prevented her death. You practically ordered it. What is it?
- 13:05You want you behind bars? You're silly, but I'll go for a
- 13:18while. It did look silly. Mapes and his men searched the apartment house
- 13:22from top to bottom and found no trace of the Todd loot that is until
- 13:26they found a movable cement block in the basement well. The Todd matter rended
- 13:33with a ninety percent recovery of the stolen items about seventy thousand dollars and cents
- 13:39in lives Gloria Tierney one innocent bystander and William Charles For me, Let's see
- 13:46expense account item fourteen one hundred and sixty two dollars thirty cents hotel and board
- 13:50won in New York. Item fifteen seventeen dollars and forty cents airfare and incidentals
- 13:54back to Hartford Fight them eighteen two hundred and thirty dollars miscellaneous expense account total
- 14:01one ninety five dollars. Remarks Nil, yours Tooley, Shohanny Dawler. Remember
- 14:20there'll be another intriguing story for you beginning next Monday night. Next week A
- 14:24music lesson on a priceless Amati violin music and mystery and danger Join us,
- 14:31Won't you yours Tooley, Shohanny Dollar? Yours truly? Johnny Dollar Is,
- 14:43starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. Written by John Dawson, it
- 14:48is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in this week's cast, were
- 14:52Vivi Janice, Barbara Fuller, Shirley Mitchell, Lawrence Dubkin, Frank Gerstell and
- 14:56Marvin Miller. Musical supervision. I am Rigo Marino. Be sure to join
- 15:01us on Monday night, same time and station. Or another exciting story of
- 15:07yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Roy Rowan speaking welcome back.
- 16:11You know, I would kind of love to have been in the courtroom as
- 16:19they pressed the case on the basis for a warrant, on the basis of
- 16:29Johnny Dollar has a hunch and we think it really makes sense. By leaving
- 16:33aside the legal ramifications, kind of seemed like a rushed ending where we knew
- 16:40we had to get somebody and we had to get some money back, particularly
- 16:44since Johnny Dollar had gone ahead and rented out that twenty five hundred dollars check
- 16:49and come out here so he would be out some money to the guy who
- 16:55gave him the tip. The positives of the series, of course, was
- 16:59at interaction with the police officer, you know, really and some really solid
- 17:06moments that showcase the humanity of the character. This script for the Todd matter
- 17:12was actually reused material from two different Johnny Dollar episodes. One was the Baltimore
- 17:18matter and another was the Rochester theft matter, that it kind of borrowed elements
- 17:25from both of those in order to put together this five parter. We'll be
- 17:30back next week with another Johnny Dollar episode when we do have some listener comments
- 17:36and feedback, and we do have one I think somewhat justly critical from m
- 17:41Gray seventy three. Several Times I've waited for an episode and it doesn't come,
- 17:47like Part five of the Forbes mast Matter. Waited for it but it
- 17:51never showed. Frustrating that you don't know the whole story, like a waste
- 17:53of time. I had to go look them up on the internet to get
- 17:56the whole story. Well, I do apologize that we have had some difficulties
- 18:04getting some episodes out on the feed. And you know, it may be
- 18:11something we you know, we may have had these sort of things happen intermittently,
- 18:18but it's you know, it's not noticed as much when you don't have
- 18:25uh, you know, when you have these multiple parts. You know,
- 18:29people you know want to know how it ends. But we're you know,
- 18:33we're working on and we're we're going to do everything we can to make sure
- 18:37we don't have these issues happen again, So so sorry you've had those difficulties.
- 18:41All right, Well, now we're going to go ahead and take a
- 18:44listen to a new Carter Brown series. This one is High Sky Hoodoo,
- 18:49which was actually the ninth Carter Brown story to be adapted. So let's go
- 18:56ahead and take a lessen Carter Brown Mysteries Adventures in excitement and suspense, based
- 19:17on the best selling novels by the slick storytelling sensation Carter Brown. How do
- 19:37you do, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carter Brown with another of my
- 19:41stories for you. There's drama and suspense in the scream of a jet plane
- 19:45through the blue. There's more drama and suspense when the plane crashes and no
- 19:48one knows why. That's the basis for my book High Sky Hurdoo, the
- 19:52story of Whitney Kent, jet pilot and war hero whom everyone calls a jinx,
- 19:56and here he is to tell you about it. It was great to
- 20:10be back, to be standing in the sunlight with a sight and sound and
- 20:15smell of aircraft all around. Ahead of me. I could see the lean,
- 20:18lethal lines of the F ninety two k can Aircraft's jet fighter beside me,
- 20:23I could see the lean, lovely lines of Sup Pearson Ken Aircraft secretary.
- 20:29Now that is my old man secretary, and he is Ken Aircraft as
- 20:34the pilot. Hank Jordan lit the torch and the twin gents built up.
- 20:37Sue Pearson turned to me. What are you going to do now you're back,
- 20:41Whitney. I've made a resolution to get to know some of the people
- 20:44who work here better, you know, see as much of them as possible.
- 20:48Lose that look in your eyes when you say that, Whitney, make
- 20:52me feel like a bargain in the slave market. What's going on here this
- 20:53morning? And this is a test fight in a way. He's moving south
- 21:03grand here he goes. He's not awfully ten sous for a routine test flight.
- 21:08It's not a routine job. Well, if you've been in the last
- 21:11six months, Whitney, have you been reading the papers? I've been too
- 21:15busy selling that fight. I remember I come home with orders for the factories
- 21:18entire output for the next two years. Not bad if it huh, not
- 21:21bad? Just wasted. What didn't you know that all F ninety two k's
- 21:26have been grounded for the last six months grounded? Didn't your father tell you?
- 21:30I saw the Great Chuck Kent for exactly five minutes yesterday. He said
- 21:33hello, and he was busy, and he'd talked to me today. You
- 21:37know how well we get on? Whose fault is there? Skip that?
- 21:41I want to know about this grounding? Why what happened? The Air Force
- 21:44took delivery of a dozen five crashed in one week, five men killed.
- 21:48What's been wrong with them? No one knows. They think it's got a
- 21:52jinx? And what's that one doing up near now? Gene Latterman his boys
- 21:56went over a fine micrometer or something. They worked on it for six weeks.
- 22:00They say it's perfect. We're finding out now if they're right. That
- 22:04explains the little huddle over there. The old man, Latimer Jim Burg Jim's
- 22:10been guarding the hangers if it were made of rubies, using every trick you
- 22:12ever learned to the FBI. And the fourth guy'd be the Air Force observer.
- 22:17Right, Yes, Colonel Creston, let's go over and join them.
- 22:19I I don't think that'd be a good idea, Whitney, Why not?
- 22:25Well? I told you they think it's got a jinx and they figured the
- 22:30jinks is me. You crashed the very first F ninety two k didn't you?
- 22:36And you were lucky you walked away from it. I didn't walk away.
- 22:38I was ejected away. But you're around now five other pilots aren't of
- 22:42all that. I'm not the first guy to bend a plane on a test
- 22:47flight. Since when was it a test flight? You were higher than a
- 22:49kite, Whitney, and you know it. So I'd been drinking. I'd
- 22:53like to know just how many guys in Korea flew down MiG Gali without ever
- 22:56having an alcoholic blood cost. So that's the way heroes are made? Is
- 23:00that how you collected your ten miges? Steer to the gills? Sure,
- 23:03I was always plastered. That's how I got ten. It was really only
- 23:07five, but I was seen double whitty, Whitney. Something's happened, that's
- 23:14Gene Lettermer on the VHF. Answer me, it's nothing. Soon Jordan's radio
- 23:19is packed up. That can happen anytime, and often does that. Aam
- 23:22is feeling the strain, that's all. He's all ten stuff, I guess.
- 23:25And there's the boom. Yeah, Jordan's gone through the sand. Barrier.
- 23:33He must be diving to do that. The F ninety two K is
- 23:34not fast enough to crack the barrier level flight. Can you see him?
- 23:37No, I can hear him, though let of them has seen him.
- 23:41I get on, Dad, everybody, he's going to crash the rings they're
- 23:48coming off. He'll hit any second. Come in, Whitney, we've been
- 24:11waiting for you. Case of let's all gather around the conference table. Huh,
- 24:15that's right, you know, Geen Latimer. Of course, these two
- 24:18gentlemen being new to you, Milton more Doodle and On Hullmyer. Hello,
- 24:21they've recently joined me, Whitney as fellow directors of the company. Now what
- 24:25we're here for is to find out what's wrong with the F ninety two K.
- 24:29The Air Force recognized it as a good fighter. They'll buy it,
- 24:33but without any bugs in it. I've talked to Colonel Creston, and his
- 24:37suggestion affects you, Gene. He admits you're a brilliant designer, but he
- 24:41thinks maybe the fault is some little thing that you may have been too close
- 24:44to her to pick up. In other words, an engineering mistake. Hasn't
- 24:48a good Colonel port Of sabotage. Sabotage with the other five to two in
- 24:52places that range from Las Alemas to Detroit. Why not I checked that plane,
- 24:56not by boat, there was nothing wrong with it or else could it
- 24:59be? But sabotage. And I'm looking right at the man I thinks responsible
- 25:02for it, meaning me, Jane, meaning you Whitney, you crashed the
- 25:06first one, set us back months. What don't you do to it this
- 25:08time? Hold on their jene, I questioned Jim Berg, a planned security
- 25:12man, about that. He put seals on the hangar and had guards watching
- 25:17it all night. Huk. If I can interrupt right here, Shermanton,
- 25:19go ahead. Accusations and suppositions will get us nowhere. And I say,
- 25:22let's call in the police. No, mister Latimer, in my opinion,
- 25:26that would be fatal. It would completely destroy confidence in Kent Aircraft. Now,
- 25:30mister Holmeyer and I, as co directors with mister Kent, are concerned
- 25:33with facts, sure, and with profits. We're not in this for sentimental
- 25:37reason, and facts are just what we haven't got at the moment. Now.
- 25:41Immediately I heard of the five crashes out of a dozen plains the air
- 25:44Force took I embarked on a certain course of action. I called in the
- 25:48Blue Circle Detective Agency from Los Angeles. They have a fine reputation, and
- 25:52I asked them to conduct an investigation. When I'm discussing it with all one
- 25:55on myself. Yes, I thought I was justified, and in view of
- 25:59this morning's I think I was right. But of course I'll abide by my
- 26:03co director's decision before going any further. Wow, I guess it sounds all
- 26:07right to me. I say, go ahead. What are you thinking?
- 26:11It's a bad business altogether. Souldn't we find out the better? And there's
- 26:17not much use having the police snooping round if there isn't any sabotage be the
- 26:21very worst kind of publicity. I am glad you agree with me. I
- 26:23meanwhile, Miss Latimer, you will, of course to devote your attention to
- 26:26checking on Colonel Queston's idea. Yes, I'll go over the next one personally,
- 26:32even though I think it's a waste of time. The boys around the
- 26:34factory say there's a Jinx on the F ninety two K, and for my
- 26:37money, that Jinx is our war hero. GI. I've had about enough,
- 26:40Latimer. You're accusing me of murder. Sure if that plane was sabotage,
- 26:45then whoever did it kill the pilot Hank Jordan as surely as if they
- 26:48put a knife in his heart. I didn't know you didn't think of that.
- 26:52Maybe next time you use your brains before your mouth. I think I'll
- 26:56be moving along, gentlemen, nobody needs a salesman right now, I take
- 27:00it. No, you can go Withney. I thought i'd move out of
- 27:07the hotel in the old beach house. If you're not using it, Chuck
- 27:08here, sure, come up to the house for dinner tonight. Well you'll
- 27:14be welcome, Okay, I'll see you then, so long, everybody.
- 27:25I head of my hotel to pack my stuff and to move it out to
- 27:26the beach House. On the way over, I wondered about the two new
- 27:30directors, Moore and Hallmyer. What were they doing in the setup? Chuck
- 27:36hadn't said anything to me about them before then, the old man and I
- 27:40hadn't been all that close. When I opened my hotel room door, I
