- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: I really do want you to stop outsourcing your metrics of happiness because you are comparing yourself on data that isn't the right data you need to get to where you want to go.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Beat till you see it podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor, and fit this business coach.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: My friends, action brings clarity, and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, be a babe.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome, welcome to the beach.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: I tell you, see it podcast.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_01]: Today we're talking about self-comparison and ooh, I don't know if you're raised on this line, but I was raised on self-comparison is a thief of joy.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: I guess I didn't have the self-part.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: The comparison is a thief of joy.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: And you know what, if fucking is.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: So here's the deal.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: If you have ever looked at someone else's life online or in your community and felt this immediate sinking pit in your stomach telling you that you are behind or you just see something and you're just why them.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: How do they get that?
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: I feel that for you.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: I really, really do.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: I heard a woman.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: say this beautiful line, you know, at a talk the other day and I'm going to have her on the podcast.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: She, she is scheduled.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: So we will have an episode with her.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to probably talk about this deeper.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: But she had said this like hit me.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: She said if comparison is high, clarity is low.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I think if that's all you get out of this episode, then I will, then I have done my job.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: But today we are going to break down the hard truth.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: you're probably not behind all right and you know this.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but let's talk about why are you scoring yourself on someone else's scoreboard because that's what comparison is right when you compare us up to somebody else it's just like we're using someone else's life and they're scoring going we're behind but really you're in your own fucking game so this first first part so on Thursday while the second part.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to just talk about comparison and do a radical success audit because I really do want you to stop outsourcing your metrics of happiness because you are comparing yourself on data that isn't the right data you need to get to where you want to go.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is called, be it till you see it, right?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: If you are using the wrong metrics to be it till you see it, you're going to end up being on someone else's costume.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be, I don't even know what that is.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: Be it till you are in there if close.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's not going to work.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: So here's a deal.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: I am a 43-year-old woman who is talking to you right now.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: And oh my god, I think I was a 43-year-old in a child's body my whole life.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, not that old, but I definitely couldn't wait to be at the next level in the next stage.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I definitely compared myself to so many people being young was so hard.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: I was so hard on myself because first of all, I didn't have a lot of money when I grew up and all my friends really did.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: At least if they didn't, they'd seem like they did because they went to Disney land before I could.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: They had cars when they were 16.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: I had to buy mine, right?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Because all these are
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: There are so, I mean, I was in the AP classes and these people were so smart, my B-plus was the hardest work of life that I could get, my A-minus, and they came so easy to them, came so easy, right?
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: And so, I remember going to college and, and everybody was like finding their husband thinking, Mary, and I was really proud to not get married and cause, I mean, because one of my college was super expensive and two, I'm think God in the marrying of those men, I would have been divorced very quickly.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I probably would have had a life I didn't want a little really of a hard time, so, but I do remember at 30.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: I 30th birthday, I remember just feeling, wow, I'm behind.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm behind.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: Because even though I knew I didn't want kids, and that kind of thing, I wasn't married.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, I was broken up.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: I broke up with my partner, and I was, so my homeless, and I had to start over with my studio and blah, blah, blah.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I just felt behind wow, you know, and then it felt every single month of not being in a relationship with the right person was, now I'm not going to get married at least in time 31.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean like, and then I just remember feeling I didn't have it all walked down and I think a lot of women feel that way at a young age.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Whether or not you want to have children, there's this thing we've got to get this stuff done early.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: And as we know, that's not true, but it doesn't mean that it is still to that feel true.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: right, it doesn't, it feels true.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: And there's also the idea, you know, retirement is around the corner.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's not really around the corner, but I want to retire early.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: So it's around the corner.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: Do I have enough money for that?
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I should have had this many members by now, so then I could do X, Y, and Z.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's just, it's a really hard time because there does feel like there's a timeline and that we're trapped and that we are behind.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: Even if we don't look at other people because there's just things that we want to have done by now and the Reality is as a business owner as long as I've been everything takes longer than we want It will always have problems and All of a sudden you'll have been there and you'll be looking back and wow how did that go?
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like I was that Brad's birthday party and it's with a friend and he didn't know how we met and so I told the story It was yeah, that was that was 11 years ago There's 11 years ago 11 years ago I've got married
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow, time does fly when you're having a good time.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: But also, we have to remember that this is a really good time for us to edit, get rid of, let go of things, not just keep accumulating, because it makes it really difficult to find the success that you want, if you're trying to carry all the things on the past decades with you.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: So what do you have to let go of?
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: Is it friends?
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a dresser?
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: You've just been like shoving more shit in?
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a car?
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a job?
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a goal that isn't yours?
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: So, for example, before it became a Lulu Lemon Ambassador, this would be 14 years ago, 15 years ago, shit.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: When you come to the house, you'll see that my picture is on the wall here.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's fucking huge, and I don't know what to do with it.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just right there staring at it, seeing other guest bedroom, bathroom.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: But they had us do the school thing, one year, five year, ten year goals, right?
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: And it had to be health-related and personal and business, or whatever, successful, whatever.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I put down that I wanted to do a yoga teacher training.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: I liked going to yoga classes.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: I had done a pause and trying to teach a training.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I was finished at my second one.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I was, you know, I should do a yoga one because then I could teach yoga classes because that's what everyone does in fitness.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: They have 17,000 certifications.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: They could teach all these different formats.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I should do that.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then six months later, when I looked at that sheet, I hadn't even touched.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: I am in Google to a yoga certification.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't even look one up and guess what?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: There was one happen in Equinox where I worked.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't even think, oh, I could do that one.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: None of that.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: Even gave to my mind.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: And so what that meant was I was accumulating goals that weren't right for the success that I wanted to have.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so my love, we really need to be thoughtful about the things that we haven't let go of that no longer are serving a good purpose for us right now.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: So next thing I want us to focus on before we get into our homework on it.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want us to talk about the borrowed scoreboard, right?
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: So this is ideal.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: We often get goals from our parents, but often your parents put goals in you.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: I hear parents talk about their kids today and what school they're gonna go to and how they're gonna be and what sports are gonna be and I'm, oh my God, do the, and I can't even keep my mouth shut which has got me in trouble.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: Do they, do they even like it?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they're gonna like it.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: We get so defensive of me and I'm, oh, this is, I'm not supposed to talk.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: They're just supposed to talk at me.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, note it, but oftentimes, our parents have had goals for us, right?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: So we feel like we're disappointing people when we don't do those things.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: And so then the only thing we do them, or we try to have fun doing them, we kind of keep that goal as part of who we are supposed to be.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: We also have past versions of ourselves that we are using still to think about how we are doing things and if we're doing a good enough job.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: 10 years ago, definitely could handle a 12 to 13 hour work day and sleep and still do all the work outs and eat really well and the person of me today can not do that if I don't get my work done in six hours that's it that's all I have folks and I have caught myself going less so you still to do this you sit down at dinner and get another fucking hour work done and I just can't so I can't I that's me in that moment comparing myself to an old self.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: using that old self's scoreboard and brain and, you know, things, and social media sucks for this, right?
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so goes back to that thing when comparison is high, player is low.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: If you open up socials and you are feeling bad about yourself when it's over, my dear, there's a big sign your scoreboard is not your own because,
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you know that it's all a highly real and you know that it has to be.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: That's the only way this works because you definitely don't have the people that are made fun of for not have it being the weird ones that are doing something stupid on the strip and who will be embarrassed at someone film them doing that.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want that.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: So you put out the highly real.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: And not to say that you should also put yourself up crying because I really hate when videos of people crying.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think we know we know it's a highly real and yet we'll compare ourselves to others.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: And the thing that you cannot get in 2200 characters or in a three second hook is all the things that went wrong before that beautiful thing went up.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: right?
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: It is so I'm pretty transparent here.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: So I know you guys know how much shit our business has gone through to get the things going because if you remember we're very transparent with you, if you're a listener we talk about this happen and then that happened and we did this and now we're here and now it works and it's great and so exciting but it's a journey but most people don't share that stuff, right?
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: And that stuff also isn't sexy so nobody wants to listen to it anyways because you just sound like a complainer but the reality is that social media makes this
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: They were not thin enough, that we're not pretty enough.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: They're not doing enough things for ourselves.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: My God, I, to tell you the truth, I hate how I look on this podcast.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: And yet, I will tell you right now, I don't do anything to change how I look on this podcast.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: But what it comes up, wow, you don't look at the camera.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's like you can't make eye contact.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: It would be cool, Leslie, if you just did your hair.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but,
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing is I also know that I don't really care, but it's just, there's just something about it because I see some other beautiful person on their podcast and just crisp and clearly filmed in 4,000 K or whatever it is, 4K and 4,000 K. I sound like that woman who I had
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I know how, what I took, that means that they took an hour and a half to set up that podcast to look that stunning and I could do that to him, but we're not doing that because that's not who I want to be on this, but the reality is that social media often has us comparing ourselves and feeling wow, I do not measure up.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: But you're peasanting yourself to somebody else and all this all the support that they have that you may not have.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I have that right.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's really important that we remember that we're looking at the shiny front beautiful things that others are putting out there.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: We are often ignoring the hidden trade-offs of and the daily maintenance of that lifestyle.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: We pretend they have such a beautiful background.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: So that means everything is beautiful.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: No, probably not.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: Probably that's the stage that they're showing you.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: I do you know, go with this woman.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's not your background.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's so pretty.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_01]: And if I were to move this computer three inches, you would see how much storage shit is out here.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: But you don't, because this is the perfect space to look.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so, just everybody is hiding all the things that they don't want people to see, because they're afraid that that will mean that they're not as successful as they are, but that's not true, because they are as successful.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_01]: They are with the junk in the background.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we need to shift out of a comparison spiral, right?
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, you need to do that.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: We obviously need to have that as an ability.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: And what I would just want to say is if you are able to notice that you are in a comparison spiral, that is the first fucking step.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a great thing because most people don't even realize that they're in a comparison spiral and tell their spiral out of control.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: So we need to use when we feel in V.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: as this diagnostic tool that tells you where in your current life, what that is?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: What is it highlighting?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: So if I see that somebody looks so stunning in their podcast and they just look like they actually know how what they're doing and their stats look amazing, it is a sign that I actually care that I want this podcast to be successful.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, it's nothing to do with whether I think I'm beautiful or not, that I'm capable and has everything to do with, I actually give a
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: if I look at someone who looks like they have it all together because they are articulate in how they can share what their goals are and they have these quicky sentences that they say and that the comparison's high clarity must be low.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: It means that I care about making sure that my points that I get to come across succinctly and effectively.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: So when you notice that you're having a little bit of that, you know, jealous eye, we call Darla Jelly Grace because when we give by own attention,
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: right, because she wants attention too.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's why she's jelly of the attention he's getting.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: So it's okay to see something in someone else and want that for yourself.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: It is a highlight of the thing.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you can use it as this, oh, this is important to me rather than some judgment tool.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's a highlighter.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's an expander tool, not one that is talking about how well you measure
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: right?
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's a highlight.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's, oh, it's almost like if you think about, um, in the movie Scrooge, which I guess is Charles Dickens, right, when you're visited with a ghost of Christmas past and present and future, maybe to see the life that you want, that's the ghost of future.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_01]: Christmas future, this is how your life is going to be.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: That's what looking at someone else's life and having a little, it's means that something that you,
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: want your to have in your future.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so that really helps you understand what you do have to audit to get that, what you do need to do to train yourself up to do that.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: What is what you do actually care about?
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Because sometimes we say we don't care about something, we actually do care about it, right?
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: We do.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that's okay.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: So just keep that in mind, because sometimes we get NDS, and then we get mad at ourselves for being NDS, and really then we missed out on what the NDS
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, this is really, really important.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: You cannot embody, you cannot be your future self if you are trying to step into a costume design for someone else.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: Cannot, cannot be it till you see it if what you see is being somebody else and comparing yourself to that.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're not able to make decisions as them because you are not them, and that's okay, right?
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you can use that person to be an inspiration and put that stuff on your vision board, but it still has to be you doing those things.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: And so how would you do it?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where the uniqueness comes and that's where the beauty comes and that's where why we can have five different computers out there and I like the one that I like because it designed it for the person that I am and they marketed that way, right, like that kind of thing.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, when you see something go, oh, well, they already done it.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I can't do it.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: No, not true because no one's going to do it like you, whatever the thing is, whatever the it is.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: So, since we talked about why we feel like there's a timeline, why we feel pressure, we've talked about the scoreboards, we've talked about comparison, actually, you just being data and information.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we're pretty clear that using other people's stuff and then judging ourselves on it is not helping us out.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, what I wanted you on the next episode is go to the big question.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: what do we put in the place of comparison and score boards that are not our own?
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: What do we put in place of that judgment?
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: So in the next episode we're going to stop questioning our old way and start actively building your custom definition of success that matches your real
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: life.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: The life you want to have and your energy and your currencies in because that's what's so important, right?
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: So I do want to give you some homework questions because I think that that will help us get you ready for the next episode.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: So even if you are being in these two next week, how they're just take a moment and I want you to take if you have more than three goals and your top three goals, if you only have three or less than your three goals that you're
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: So got them.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: So who taught you that these specific things, the equal success?
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: So if you are working on goals and you're, until I have this, then I can't have that.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_00]: Who taught you that?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: Or that come from?
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to choose the morning pages on the
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: Next question, this is more of a cost-benefit analysis.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: If you magically woke up tomorrow with the exact life of the person you're comparing yourself to, what hidden daily trade-offs or responsibilities would you inherit that you actually don't want?
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: So if you woke up as a person, you're jelly of.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: They're what the trade-offs would you get, right?
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: So funny when I think of that.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, God.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: I do not want that.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely love my life.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: Because because I wouldn't have the husband I have, the dogs I have, and house I have, or the morning routine I have, I'd have to.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'd have to have two systems.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so that's your next question answer.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: Next one, we call the MD decoder.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Think of someone you envied recently, stripping away their specific job or relationship or lifestyle, what is the underlying feeling or energy that they have that your current life is missing.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: So that person that you envied, do you think that they have more freedom, do they have more ease, they have more playfulness, more visibility, take away the actual specifics and what's the energy and vibe that they're embodying that you have a little
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to help you understand what you're being till you see because you might not even actually want to do the thing that they're doing.
