- 0:00Speaker 1: Previously on The Chosen People.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Look at them.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Pathetic.
- 0:06Speaker 2: If even the smallest of foxes should spring up and
- 0:09Speaker 2: dart along that wall, it would crumble beneath them.
- 0:13Speaker 4: Rally the others.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Let them know Jerusalem is defying Persia's peace.
- 0:18Speaker 2: They plan to strike. In secret.
- 0:22Speaker 4: When our hands are busy and our backs are turned.
- 0:26Speaker 2: But we do not retreat.
- 0:28Speaker 4: We do not pause.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Weeks passed. The wall grew higher, stronger, but so did
- 0:37Speaker 1: the threats. And though the sword still hung by his side,
- 0:42Speaker 1: it was the hammer in his hand that told the
- 0:45Speaker 1: true story. Jerusalem was not just defending herself from annihilation.
- 0:51Speaker 1: She was rebuilding, becoming whole again. The dawn emerged gently
- 1:02Speaker 1: over Jerusalem, its soft glow slowly brightening streets already filled
- 1:08Speaker 1: with whispers and murmurs. The morning wind carried more than
- 1:13Speaker 1: dust that day. Voices, angry and weary, rose from the
- 1:19Speaker 1: streets of Jerusalem. No sound of clanging stone or rhythm
- 1:24Speaker 1: of chisels, only cries of injustice and of desperation. Nehemiah
- 1:30Speaker 1: stood at the edge of the market square, watching and listening.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Dust rose in swirling currents from sandaled feet pacing anxiously
- 1:41Speaker 1: along alleyways and marketplaces. Progress and determination had been all
- 1:47Speaker 1: but replaced by poverty and destitution. The governor observed with
- 1:53Speaker 1: quiet intensity. He had always been a careful listener. one
- 1:59Speaker 1: who heard not only words, but the heart behind them.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He approached a crowd of agitated citizens, their words sharpened
- 2:08Speaker 1: with anger and desperation. Nehemiah whispered a prayer to himself
- 2:13Speaker 1: as their footsteps quickened. A man stepped forward from the group,
- 2:18Speaker 1: his voice hoarse from nights spent working on the city walls.
- 2:22Speaker 3: We're starving, Nehemiah. Our fields lie untended, our crops dying,
- 2:29Speaker 3: because we've spent every hour building these blasted walls. Now
- 2:34Speaker 3: we've mortgaged everything we own just to buy enough grain
- 2:38Speaker 3: to feed our families.
- 2:40Speaker 1: A woman holding a child too weak to stand on
- 2:44Speaker 1: his own feet pressed through. She cried out, wavering between
- 2:48Speaker 1: fury and sorrow.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And now they say it's not enough to pay the
- 2:55Speaker 4: king's taxes. We've borrowed silver, borrowed against our vineyards and
- 3:00Speaker 4: olive groves.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Some of us have even had to sell our sons
- 3:04Speaker 5: and daughters into slavery.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Nehemiah's heart twisted sharply within him at the woman's words.
- 3:12Speaker 1: The image of Israelite children in bondage was more bitter
- 3:15Speaker 1: than anything he had imagined. The people had risen courageously
- 3:20Speaker 1: against surrounding threats, but now faced a darker enemy, one
- 3:25Speaker 1: from within.
- 3:26Speaker 5: And who profits from our suffering? Our own brothers. The nobles,
- 3:32Speaker 5: the wealthy, they are the ones lending silver. Even you
- 3:36Speaker 5: would blush to hear the interest they place on it.
- 3:40Speaker 5: And you know what they take when we can't pay.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Our own children suffer.
- 3:46Speaker 1: The man smashed his clenched fist against a broken cart
- 3:50Speaker 1: next to him that shattered under the force. The murmuring
- 3:54Speaker 1: of the crowd rose louder, tension boiling beneath every word.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Nehemiah slowly stepped back, the weight of this betrayal settling
- 4:04Speaker 1: heavily on his shoulders. His heart darted between his empathy
- 4:08Speaker 1: for the people and disdain for the nobles that so
- 4:12Speaker 1: callously afflicted their own brothers and sisters. Both perpetrator and
- 4:17Speaker 1: victim alike were in desperate need of God's mercy. Turning
- 4:21Speaker 1: away from the crowd, Nehemiah moved toward a quieter street.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The people had intended to follow, but upon seeing his
- 4:30Speaker 1: fists clenched tightly at his sides, determined they had poured
- 4:34Speaker 1: enough fuel onto the fires that raged within the governor.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Away from the crowd, Nehemiah's carefully held composure broke. He
- 4:43Speaker 1: pressed his forehead against a cool stone wall, whispering fiercely
- 4:47Speaker 1: to himself and God, O Lord.
- 4:50Speaker 6: How can we build walls of stone while tearing each
- 4:54Speaker 6: other apart from within? How can we restore your city
- 4:58Speaker 6: when we devour one another with greed?
- 5:02Speaker 1: His chest rose and fell with controlled breaths as he
- 5:06Speaker 1: struggled to steady his thoughts. After several moments of deep contemplation,
- 5:13Speaker 1: He lifted his head, eyes now clear with renewed purpose.
- 5:18Speaker 1: This injustice could not be ignored, not while breath still
- 5:23Speaker 1: filled his lungs. He straightened his shoulders and walked decisively
- 5:28Speaker 1: toward the hall where the city's leaders gathered. Inside a
- 5:33Speaker 1: large stone chamber, richly dressed nobles and landowners assembled at
- 5:39Speaker 1: Nehemiah's summons. Their fine robes shimmered against the rough-hewn stone walls,
- 5:45Speaker 1: an ironic contrast to the suffering of those outside. Some
- 5:50Speaker 1: wore expressions of calm arrogance, others discomfort. They all watched
- 5:56Speaker 1: carefully as Nehemiah stepped forward. His voice was quiet, but
- 6:01Speaker 1: brimming with restrained fury.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Do you know why I have called you here?
- 6:08Speaker 1: An elder nobleman, grey-haired and accustomed to respect, stepped forward,
- 6:14Speaker 1: eyes narrowing slightly.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Perhaps you might enlighten us, governor.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Nehemiah's eyes flashed sharply. The nobleman jolted in place.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I have heard the cries of our people, your own
- 6:29Speaker 4: brothers and sisters. They starve while you grow wealthy. They
- 6:36Speaker 4: have mortgaged their lands, their homes, even their own children,
- 6:40Speaker 4: to your greed.
- 6:42Speaker 1: The nobles shifted uncomfortably, some refusing to meet Nehemiah's gaze.
- 6:48Speaker 1: He stepped closer, confronting them directly, his voice rising.
- 6:53Speaker 4: You charge them interest on loans they cannot repay, placing
- 6:57Speaker 4: them into bondage. We fought enemies from without, and now
- 7:01Speaker 4: you become enemies within us?
- 7:03Speaker 1: He paused, allowing his words to pierce deep.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Is this how we repay the Lord, who freed us
- 7:11Speaker 4: from slavery in Egypt, who brought us home from exile,
- 7:16Speaker 4: by enslaving one another?
- 7:18Speaker 1: The silence stretched painfully until one of the younger nobles
- 7:23Speaker 1: finally stepped forward hesitantly, face flushed with embarrassment.
- 7:28Speaker 4: What should we do then?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Nehemiah's eyes softened only slightly. But his voice carried on
- 7:35Speaker 1: firm and unyielding.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Restore to them, today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves,
- 7:43Speaker 4: their homes, and their children. Cancel their deaths. Let justice
- 7:52Speaker 4: reign once again among God's people.
- 7:55Speaker 1: A stunned silence fell. Nehemiah stared each noble down individually.
- 8:02Speaker 1: challenging any further resistance. Finally, an older noble, clearly moved,
- 8:08Speaker 1: stepped forward.
- 8:10Speaker 2: You are right, Nehemiah. We, all of us, have done wrong.
- 8:19Speaker 2: We will return everything. We will demand nothing more from
- 8:24Speaker 2: our brothers and our sisters.
- 8:27Speaker 1: A ripple of quiet ascent passed through the gathered men Nehemiah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: unsatisfied with mere words, called priests to witness the oath.
- 8:38Speaker 1: He lifted the folds of his own robe, shaking it
- 8:41Speaker 1: vigorously so the dust below dramatically into the air.
- 8:46Speaker 4: May God shake from his house anyone who breaks this
- 8:50Speaker 4: promise until they are as empty as this robe.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The nobles echoed in unified humility.
- 8:57Speaker 2: May it be as you have said.
- 9:01Speaker 1: The days following this confrontation saw a rebirth of community
- 9:06Speaker 1: in Jerusalem. Fields returned, families reunited, debts forgiven, signs of
- 9:14Speaker 1: true restoration and justice. Yet Nehemiah knew actions spoke louder
- 9:20Speaker 1: than words. He would lead not merely by command, but
- 9:24Speaker 1: by example. Though entitled to a governor's food allowance, Nehemiah
- 9:29Speaker 1: refused to claim it, For twelve years he laboured without
- 9:34Speaker 1: demanding payment. Every evening he invited dozens, then hundreds, to
- 9:40Speaker 1: dine at his own table. Meals simple yet abundant, freely
- 9:46Speaker 1: shared with nobles, craftsmen, farmers, even strangers from foreign lands.
- 9:52Speaker 1: One evening, while servants poured grain and wine generously, a
- 9:57Speaker 1: visiting official watched with astonishment.
- 10:00Speaker 2: You eat and live modestly, Nehemiah. Why not take what's
- 10:03Speaker 2: owed you? Why sacrifice so much?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Nehemiah paused, looking thoughtfully around his table at the faces
- 10:11Speaker 1: of his people, then smiled gently.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Generosity that costs nothing. is worth nothing. How could I
- 10:22Speaker 4: ask my people to give without giving first myself?
- 10:27Speaker 1: The official nodded, deeply moved, quietly humbled. Late into the night,
- 10:34Speaker 1: beneath Jerusalem's rising walls, Nehemiah often wandered alone, listening to
- 10:40Speaker 1: the whispers of the wind, the distant songs of families reunited.
- 10:45Speaker 1: and the gentle murmurs of grateful prayers rising from homes
- 10:49Speaker 1: now safe from greed's grasp. Tonight, as he walked slowly
- 10:55Speaker 1: along the rebuilt western wall, the quiet of the city
- 10:59Speaker 1: pressed lovingly around him. Stars glittered serenely overhead, witnesses of
- 11:06Speaker 1: the justice that now echoed through these streets. He looked
- 11:10Speaker 1: upward toward the heavens, his voice quiet yet assured.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Remember me, O my God, for good, for all I
- 11:20Speaker 4: have done for these people.
- 11:22Speaker 1: In the hush that followed, the silence was profound, gentle
- 11:28Speaker 1: and comforting, an affirmation from heaven itself. And Nehemiah knew
- 11:34Speaker 1: in his heart the true rebuilding had happened today, not
- 11:39Speaker 1: just with stone and mortar, but within hearts once hardened
- 11:44Speaker 1: by selfishness, now softened by mercy, justice, and generosity. And
- 11:51Speaker 1: Nehemiah smiled, knowing it was only the beginning of all
- 11:57Speaker 1: God intended to restore. This Pray.com production is only made
