- 0:26What is going on, everybody?
- 0:28Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast, where we're doing a series from the Legends Championships, where we are interviewing all the champions of the elite division.
- 0:39And with us today is the 65-plus champion, Denise Moore.
- 0:44Denise, thank you so much for joining us.
- 0:47It's my pleasure.
- 0:48So I'm going to get the tough question out of the way off the top.
- 0:53You're a CrossFitter.
- 0:56Yet your Instagram handle says girl golfer.
- 0:58So is it two loves?
- 1:02Is it seasons of life?
- 1:06Why do we have girl golfer?
- 1:11To answer that, it's basically been a progression of my life.
- 1:17When I was in high school and college, I played softball and volleyball, and my dad loved golf.
- 1:24And I wanted to play with him, and I was never very good.
- 1:31But then at some point,
- 1:33Like at the age of 28, I said, you know what?
- 1:36I'm going to take this.
- 1:37I'm going to try to be good at it.
- 1:43I wanted to be a professional, but that wasn't really in the cards.
- 1:48But I played on the mini tour in California back in the early 90s.
- 1:57I took three months off my work and actually went out and played for...
- 2:03It was called the Players West Tour in California.
- 2:07I tried to find, you know, in preparing for this, I tried to find any information on that.
- 2:12And I couldn't online because I guess it was so old.
- 2:16But, so I took one summer off and I played, and I played, excuse the cat.
- 2:24I played in,
- 2:27for three months as an amateur and I didn't do very well.
- 2:32And so I said, you know what, that's okay.
- 2:35But I still love the game.
- 2:37So I just wasn't very competitive on the course.
- 2:41And so I said, all right, fine.
- 2:43I'll just go and play for fun.
- 2:47And then as I was playing, I was walking and carrying all the time.
- 2:52And I said, well, I'm going to then try to run
- 2:57run more to help me with my legs to try, you know, carry and play golf better because it was all on trying to be a better golfer.
- 3:04And so I've run a few half marathons, about like 20, 25 half marathons and two marathons.
- 3:14And I thought that was going to help me.
- 3:18But then what happened was the golf kind of went on the sideline.
- 3:23But I had already created my Instagram account.
- 3:26And that's why it was Girl Golfer.
- 3:28And so I was still running.
- 3:30And then one of my running friends, her daughter opened up a new gym called CrossFit in 2010.
- 3:42And her and her boyfriend at the time, Vanessa Chanez and Matt Elregue, opened up this gym called Resolution CrossFit.
- 3:53And I said, well, you know, maybe that will help me with my running.
- 3:56Because golf was like way in the back.
- 4:00So just to kind of clear up everything, you golfed and then you ran to help your golf.
- 4:07Mm-hmm.
- 4:08Then you found this thing CrossFit and you thought maybe that'll help my running.
- 4:14So it's just layering on top.
- 4:16You're you're creating the onion.
- 4:18Yes.
- 4:20Yes, because I thought, well, this is fun.
- 4:21And then I was like going to CrossFit maybe twice a week.
- 4:26Well, you can't really go to CrossFit twice a week because you are sore as can be.
- 4:31So I just got more and more into it.
- 4:33And I thought, wow, this is really cool.
- 4:35You can lift heavy stuff.
- 4:37which I've never done really in my entire life.
- 4:40Being 65, you and a woman,
- 4:44you weren't allowed to go in the weight room in high school or in college, you were looked at as, oh, well, you know, you can't lift heavy weights.
- 4:52So when I got to doing that in CrossFit, uh, resolution CrossFit, it was like, this is amazing.
- 4:59And so that became my passion.
- 5:01And so I still go, there's still, you know, I go out with my husband and we play, uh, we played on Christmas day.
- 5:08It was wonderful.
- 5:09And we got, we got 18 holes in and four and,
- 5:13four hours and 20 minutes.
- 5:14So that was pretty cool.
- 5:16And I'm a better golfer now than I was way back when I tried.
- 5:20So I went through your Instagram and I did find this shot of your swing and no joke.
- 5:29It's, it's one of the best wings I've ever seen.
- 5:32Like you, you know what you're doing out there on the course.
- 5:37That was a day that I went with my gym buddy, my bestie, my best friend at Resolute CrossFit, Cindy Henkel.
- 5:48She's a games athlete also.
- 5:49But her daughter wanted to play golf and is playing golf.
- 5:55And so I thought, well, I'll just go out and hit a few balls.
- 6:01And it was fun.
- 6:03So...
- 6:05Your swing is sweet.
- 6:07I wish I had that swing.
- 6:09Thank you.
- 6:11I look at that swing and I go, eh, that looked a little weak.
- 6:17Golf is such timing because the harder you swing, the more terrible it is.
- 6:24It's all about timing.
- 6:26I played way too much baseball and softball before I started that my swing looks like
- 6:34a baseball swing trying to fit in a different whatever plane plane.
- 6:41Well, you probably hit it to the right a lot because my husband grew up playing baseball and his thing, he played baseball.
- 6:49Well, he still plays baseball.
- 6:51He's 63 and still plays baseball.
- 6:54He just played out in the, in the desert this two weekends ago.
- 7:00So, or last weekend.
- 7:02Um,
- 7:03And he pitched, and his arm didn't fall off, although he thought it was going to.
- 7:12I helped him with his swing, and baseball players have this really outside-in swing because that's the way they go.
- 7:20They kind of go outside-in, and golfers really need to go inside-out.
- 7:25So you get a little draw that way, but it's fun.
- 7:29Yeah, I have a lot of draw that way.
- 7:32But yeah, we'll move on.
- 7:34So it sounds like your entire life, you've wanted to do something to keep you active, whether it be golf, softball, whatever that might be.
- 7:46When you found CrossFit, like the same thing was for me, because I played football, baseball.
- 7:54threw in track and swam.
- 7:58And then when I left all of that, there was nothing to fill the hole.
- 8:04Other than like, we'd try golf, we tried softball, different things like that.
- 8:09But man, when I found CrossFit, it was like a new lease on life.
- 8:14It really is.
- 8:16Did you find the same thing?
- 8:18Absolutely.
- 8:18I found my home.
- 8:21Just...
- 8:23The gym started out as a very small gym.
- 8:25And I was like one of the first few people at the gym in 2010.
- 8:29They affiliated in 2009 and opened the doors in 2010.
- 8:31And I started coming spring of 2010.
- 8:40And then I just went more and more.
- 8:43And it was just everything.
- 8:44You'd walk into the gym and you're like, all right, what are we doing today?
- 8:48This is going to be fun.
- 8:49Can I do it?
- 8:50Challenge myself.
- 8:52When I first started, I could not jump on a box.
- 8:56Um, you know how they have those huge tires that they would flip.
- 9:00Well, they had one of those tractor tires and I, and they said, you can jump on that, which is, I don't know, 18 inches, 15 inches, something very small.
- 9:11And I was like, I couldn't do it.
- 9:14I really couldn't.
- 9:15And it was so scary the first time I did it.
- 9:18And I thought I was going to fall over flat on my face, but those challenges
- 9:25every time I beat one of those challenges that I put in front of myself and they helped me put in front of me, it was a win, a win.
- 9:32It was like every month I'd have some kind of win and it just builds your confidence just in life.
- 9:40And you'd walk around and go, I did that this morning.
- 9:42So.
- 9:45What I found, so I met you at Legends during check-in.
- 9:51Yes.
- 9:51And I did a quick little interview with you.
- 9:54And I think Cindy too, right?
- 9:55Yes, Cindy.
- 9:56Yeah.
- 9:57And so I asked you what you were most excited about.
- 10:00And you were like, lifting heavy weights.
- 10:03Lifting heavy weights.
- 10:06And you had mentioned that when you were younger, that was forbidden for you.
- 10:12And now you get to do it.
- 10:15freely as much as you want.
- 10:17So what, what does that mean to you to be able, like what kind of power does that give you that you get to do that now?
- 10:28Gosh, that's a really tough question because it's just an overall feeling of knowing that I can survive.
- 10:37I lift heavy weights.
- 10:39That's great.
- 10:40But also when I walk down the street, if something happens to me,
- 10:45I can survive that.
- 10:46I can push that person out of the way because I can clean a jerk.
- 10:51Or I can run because I run and box jump and all that stuff.
- 10:55So I can survive.
- 10:57We're training ourselves for real life of what's happening.
- 11:00And you see what's happening out there.
- 11:04From my perspective, being a 65-year-old, I sometimes get scared about some of the silly things that are happening.
- 11:14And when I grew up, it wasn't really that way.
- 11:17You weren't scared to walk down the street.
- 11:18My parents would send us out, go.
- 11:23When the street lights come on, you come home.
- 11:26You can't do that now.
- 11:29So it kind of helps me prepare for real life.
- 11:34Oh, or move a couch.
- 11:35I got a vacuum.
- 11:36I got to move that couch.
- 11:37When no one's around, I'll do it myself.
- 11:40It's all right.
- 11:41And it's a sleeper couch.
- 11:45Good on you.
- 11:46Steward couches are not an easy move.
- 11:48No.
- 11:50Especially if there's 20 cat toys in there.
- 11:52You've got to find out all the cat toys first.
- 11:55But just the fact that I'm 65 and I'm still getting stronger is amazing me.
- 12:06Because I'm still hitting PRs.
- 12:10Like during...
- 12:14the legends had a one rep max snatch and during the qualifier and you did it, it was a workout where you did one rep, you did a Metcon and then you did another one rep.
- 12:31And I thought, well, this, this is going to be interesting because I've never snatched more than 105 pounds.
- 12:39And, uh, you got my cough.
- 12:42Um,
- 12:43And during the qualifier, I snatched 110 pounds in a squat.
- 12:49And I was 64 at the time because I just turned 65 in October.
- 12:55But still, that's the most I've ever snatched my entire life.
- 12:58And I'm in my mid 60s.
- 13:02That's so cool.
- 13:03So cool.
- 13:06And legends gave you the opportunity to one rep max both.
- 13:09So my question to you is, what is your favorite of the two?
- 13:17Right now it's a snatch, even though it's less weight.
- 13:21It's a very technical lift.
- 13:24And
- 13:25i find it much easier to snatch than it than i do to jerk the clean is easy like i can clean 161 pounds but i can't jerk that my jerk is 137 something like that and then beginning of last year when i knew that i was turning 65 last year
- 13:45the USAW allows you to lift at 65 years old if you're turning 65 in that calendar.
- 13:54And so I said to my coach, Matt, Matt is my coach, besides the gym owner, I'd like to
- 14:04see what it's like to go to an actual weightlifting competition.
- 14:09It looks so fun.
- 14:10When I was a kid, I would watch them in the Olympics and say, that is amazing.
- 14:15You know, I love doing it.
- 14:16I bet I could do it.
- 14:17And I would watch weightlifting as a child, as a young girl, every year that the Olympics had it.
- 14:26So that was a big interest of mine, knowing that I would never be able to do it because at that time, women didn't really do that.
- 14:35So this year I was able to compete and go to the NAO North America Open Series 2 up in Pleasanton.
- 14:50And I was able to lift a hundred kilos total.
- 14:56That was my total.
- 14:58And then, um, I wasn't able to go to the finals because the finals were the same weekend as legends.
- 15:05So I had to choose between legends and weightlifting and legends one out because I just turned 65 and CrossFit right now was the emphasis.
- 15:19So.
- 15:20And I'm glad I did it because I ended up podium.
- 15:24So it was good.
- 15:27So I'm getting a reading that my internet is lagging a tiny bit.
- 15:31Hopefully it'll come back.
- 15:32It usually does.
- 15:33And it has just now.
- 15:35Thank goodness.
- 15:38What I find fascinating is you say that you can clean 161, but you can't jerk it, but you can 137.
- 15:51Like 15 years ago, if someone told you you're going to be able to lift a small woman over your head, like, would you have ever believed that?
- 16:04Like, I think when we're in this space, sometimes the numbers, you roll them out and you throw them out there, but my goodness, like that's, that's, that's a regular sized woman.
- 16:15You're lifting over your head.
- 16:16I guess so.
- 16:20That'd be Cindy.
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:23So sometimes you just have to take a step back and compare it to something in real life to show what amazing things we do, especially at 65.
- 16:35My goodness, Denise.
- 16:38I don't know that you know that I had breast cancer.
- 16:43I did not.
- 16:44Okay, well, there's a ton of health issues that I've had and I can go through them all if you want.
- 16:51Like when I first started CrossFit, when I walked into the gym, I couldn't lift a PVC pipe over my head because there was another thing that was going on.
- 17:03When I was running, I thought, oh, my shoulder hurts.
- 17:05And I thought running was ruining my shoulder too.
- 17:10So I thought, you know, maybe it'll help my shoulder.
- 17:12Well, I had a frozen shoulder.
- 17:14And so it took two years just like hanging from the bar, doing PVC pipe.
- 17:21I couldn't rack just a regular bar.
- 17:28So I always had to do things with just the PVC pipe.
- 17:32And when I went to the doctor to try to get this diagnosed, they took an x-ray and they said, there's nothing anatomically wrong with it.
- 17:43And they just sent me on my way thinking, I'm just a woman, you can go on.
- 17:48And I was 50, I had just turned 50, 50, something like that.
- 17:58And I'm trying to remember exactly, but I also had my gallbladder.
- 18:05I've had like 12 surgeries over my life.
- 18:07So that same year that I had that, I had my gallbladder taken out.
- 18:12That was more of an emphasis.
- 18:15But then after about two years, it finally worked its way out.
- 18:22We didn't do any surgeries, how they go in and they just manipulate it to break up that scar tissue.
- 18:29CrossFit helped me break up that scar tissue by just hanging from the bar and just keeping going every day.
- 18:35Then in 2013, I did my first open.
- 18:41So this will be my 13th open.
- 18:47That was the same year I did my first open.
- 18:51Let's see.
- 18:51I have a cheat sheet because I've had so many things happen that.
- 19:01So I did my first open and I thought, well, this is fun, but they didn't really have anything for for masters.
- 19:09So it was kind of like down.
- 19:11And then when I turned 55, right before the open, before I turned 55, I said, you know what, when I turned 55, all the weights go down and I'm going to try to make it to the next level.
- 19:24Meaning like the qualifier for the next level.
- 19:31And
- 19:342013 is when I turned 55.
- 19:37And November 1st, 2013, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
- 19:42And my sister was diagnosed six months before I was.
- 19:46And then my mother died from breast cancer when she was 58.
- 19:50And so when they finally did the biopsy on the breast cancer and they said it was very, very fast growing, I had no choice but to do a double mastectomy.
- 20:02And even though I only had breast cancer on one side, I said, with family history, we need to take both.
- 20:08And did that in December 10th, 2013.
- 20:10And then 2000, I did it with reconstruction, which I wish I hadn't done.
- 20:22because two years after having the implants in, my kidneys started to have bad numbers.
- 20:29Like the protein was not, my bun numbers were very high.
- 20:35So I eventually had them taken out, but I was just feeling like they were killing me.
- 20:43It's so funny you say that because I've had friends that went through the same experience.
- 20:50Yeah.
- 20:52um where they got the implants got very very sick and couldn't really explain what was going on took them out and all of a sudden everything got better the doctors aren't telling us anything either like i went back to the same well that's part of the
- 21:13I had, um, one thing to, to share with you and we'll get back into the series piece.
- 21:19L D Y two, two, seven, four, two.
- 21:21I love it.
- 21:22I loved it.
- 21:22It has to be the first time I've ever heard one of your guests say they love heavyweights.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:28And thank you for the donation.
- 21:30Um, truly appreciate that.
- 21:33So, so you had the reconstruction, you start getting even sicker almost.
- 21:40Well, fortunately they caught my cancer very early.
- 21:44So I didn't have to do, and it was ERPR negative.
- 21:47So I didn't have to have any kind of tamoxifen.
- 21:50I didn't have to have chemotherapy.
- 21:51I didn't have to have radiation because when they caught it, it was what they considered DCIS, which is still in its structure.
- 22:00So I hadn't broken out of the structure.
- 22:01So they did a
- 22:03an excisional biopsy on the one side, they said, well, we think we got it, but with your history, we probably should just go ahead.
- 22:09And because that's what the excisional biopsy is, how they determine what kind of cancer it was.
- 22:15And that's when they said it was fast growing.
- 22:18And that determined the reason to take both breasts.
- 22:24And reconstruction was
- 22:27back to my mother, what makes you a woman, breasts, I was still back in that, you know, understanding, well, if I'm flat chested, I'm going to be called a guy and all that stuff.
- 22:41I didn't want that.
- 22:43But when the surgeon put the
- 22:48the implants in he, for some reason thought I was like a triple D. So they became these really big ones that I've never, I would have never had because I was never that big.
- 22:59And so, but I do have to say that I actually did the open that next year.
- 23:08So three months after having the surgery, the mastectomy and during having the implants,
- 23:16They build a cavity so that you don't get the implants right away.
- 23:19You have to actually create a pocket before you can actually have the real implants put in.
- 23:26During that time, I actually did the open and I made the online qualifier for the masters.
- 23:33I made the top 200.
- 23:34I didn't make the top 20 at the time, but I did make the top 200.
- 23:41I did that almost every year except for 2016.
- 23:47I made the online qualifier.
- 23:51It's cool that you're sharing all this because when I looked at your career, it took you a while from the time you started CrossFit to the time you became elite.
- 24:04Right.
- 24:05And now I know why.
- 24:06Like, this was a journey.
- 24:08Yeah.
- 24:10Because not only after...
- 24:13I was running all the time before that, and then I kind of just basically stopped running.
- 24:19I did do the Disneyland half marathon because I was a legacy runner.
- 24:23I ran that from the very beginning.
- 24:25I said, well, I'll just keep on doing it until the very last year I did it was the next year they had the very last year.
- 24:33So I missed one year.
- 24:35But during this time, I kind of gave up.
- 24:42having the implants made me feel crappy.
- 24:45And I gained so much weight that I got to 2016.
- 24:50I was 186 pounds, which doesn't sound, you know, I'm five foot seven and a half, but I was rather large.
- 24:59There's a video in there of me doing a snatch on Instagram at that like weight.
- 25:06And then you see subsequent, and that was only, I think 90 pounds.
- 25:14And then the next two videos in that post is 106 pounds and the 110 pounds during the qualifier.
- 25:23So I kind of gave up.
- 25:27The year 2016 is when I didn't make the online qualifier because I was just out of shape.
- 25:33I couldn't do anything.
- 25:36And then I said to my coach at the time, who was Vanessa, I said, I'm done.
- 25:41I need to, I need to clean up my diet.
- 25:43I need to really go for it.
- 25:45And that, that pretty much started my journey.
- 25:49I said, I wanted to be able to do something when, uh, when I turned 60, I want to try to make it to games and.
- 25:59I ended up, when I turned 60, is when they cut the people down to 10 going to the games.
- 26:11And so I was 20th.
- 26:12I was like, well, you know, I'm pretty used to disappointment.
- 26:17So I was like, all right, well, I'm going to have to try harder.
- 26:23And then ended up when they opened up to 20 again in 2021, which was kind of end of COVID, I was able to make it into the games at 19th.
- 26:43And when I was at the games, I came out eighth.
- 26:46So that to me is a reason why 10 people
- 26:52at the games isn't enough.
- 26:54You need to have more people you need to because I'm an example.
- 26:59I came in 19 into the games and ended up at eight.
- 27:04So you're reading my notes now, which just isn't fair.
- 27:09I'm sorry to get to that.
- 27:11But no, I'm trying to find the snatch video.
- 27:19But you have a lot of snatch videos.
- 27:21I know it's funny.
- 27:26Do you know how far back it was?
- 27:28Yeah, it was just recent because let me find myself.
- 27:35Was it before like did the put the legends posts?
- 27:45Okay, it is four posts back.
- 27:51Okay.
- 27:54I will bring it up on the screen.
- 28:00So this one right here.
- 28:04So that was like 2016 is when I was like, Alright, I'm through.
- 28:12I don't want to be that shape anymore.
- 28:14And that's 106 pounds.
- 28:16That's recent.
- 28:17This is last year.
- 28:20And that is the qualifier, 110 pounds.
- 28:27You weighed 110 pounds?
- 28:28No, that was the weight.
- 28:29Okay.
- 28:31So, you know, sometimes when you have extra weight on, the barbell feels lighter.
- 28:38But with what you were going through, that was not the case.
- 28:41No.
- 28:43There's a lot of things about having implants.
- 28:46If I would ever approach anybody that's having a mastectomy,
- 28:52I would try to steer them away from having implants because, I mean, it's bad enough they have to scrape out all the breast tissue because of the cancer, but they also, like, cut your pecs to put the implants underneath them.
- 29:11And I was always afraid that, like, even doing a chest bar of breast,
- 29:19hitting my chest and having one of them explode.
- 29:25I was in a car accident just a few months after having them in, put back in, like you have expanders and then you get the real ones in.
- 29:36And one of them started leaking and they couldn't find that until six months later.
- 29:43So I had have one leak for a few months before
- 29:48Um, they took it out so that, that probably didn't help because they were silicone.
- 29:53So with, with the cutting of the pack, what about like you're pushing like pushups?
- 30:00Yeah.
- 30:00Did that affect that?
- 30:02My bench is like there I can snatch 110 pounds.
- 30:07I can only bench 107.
- 30:11That's my top.
- 30:12And it, and it hasn't come back.
- 30:15Um, it's getting there.
- 30:18Because I had the implants removed December, the end of December of 2022.
- 30:28So it's been just a little bit over a year.
- 30:30Okay.
- 30:35And then prior to that, at the beginning of 2022, my shoulder got so, it was the same shoulder that I had frozen shoulder in.
- 30:46It was so bad that...
- 30:49I had PRP done before the games in 2021.
- 30:55Went to the games.
- 30:57It never got better.
- 30:58It just got worse and worse and worse.
- 30:59So finally, in December of 2022, I had shoulder surgery.
- 31:06They were thinking that maybe I had like a torn.
- 31:11They had all these for the MRI.
- 31:13They were like, oh, you have a torn shoulder.
- 31:16this tendon and have torn that tendon and when they ended up getting in there it wasn't torn it basically i had major arthritis that they scraped out a bone spur they removed my bursa sac and my rotator cuff was frayed about 15 and they shaved that off and for about six months after that
- 31:37my shoulder hurt for a while.
- 31:41I had the shoulder surgery and I ended up doing the five weeks later, I did the open with wall blocks.
- 31:48You were such a CrossFitter.
- 31:51And I made it.
- 31:52I made it to the next level too.
- 31:54So in 2022.
- 31:56But it took about six months for the actual pain of all that, the scraping and all that, scraping around the bone spur to dissipate.
- 32:06But once that was done, I was like, oh my God, this is fantastic.
- 32:13Do you believe that that was the cause of the locked shoulder in 2010?
- 32:20That you mitigated that for a while by stretching it out, opening it up through CrossFit, and then they finally fixed it in 22?
- 32:34I think... See, I'm not a doctor, but I believe that frozen shoulder is...
- 32:42basically impingements or scar tissue that has been built up.
- 32:46The arthritis is on the bone.
- 32:48So I think they're separate.
- 32:50But my family has a lot of arthritis.
- 32:57I only had arthritis in that.
- 33:00Like my knees are good, knock on wood.
- 33:04And, uh, all my other, like my fingers are good.
- 33:07You know, some of my family members have the big knuckles and all that stuff.
- 33:11So I think it, it could be possible that the, the, um, frozen shoulder got arthritis in it because of the scar tissue that was there that was just developed.
- 33:30So,
- 33:32So let's go back to the breast implants.
- 33:35You're feeling awful.
- 33:37You decide to have them removed.
- 33:39And you said that you were ready to give up.
- 33:43And so you have them removed.
- 33:45Do you instantly feel better?
- 33:47Does it take some time?
- 33:49And at what point do you realize, hey, I can go back to doing this?
- 33:56I mentally, so I competed in 2022 at Mayhem, Legends at Mayhem, because this is my fifth year.
- 34:09And that year, that was not this last year, but the year before, right?
- 34:15I was feeling so sick.
- 34:18And, you know, I tried to compete.
- 34:20I basically felt like I was in sludge.
- 34:24And two weeks later is when I had the implants taken out.
- 34:29And about two weeks after that, I was like, I can breathe.
- 34:33Like I would always have, anytime you run because the pecs are on top, you start running, the implants get pushed into your chest and you can't breathe.
- 34:43It like shuts down your lung capacity.
- 34:47And so I run, I was like, oh wow, I can actually breathe.
- 34:50It doesn't feel like I'm wearing a weighted vest all the time.
- 34:56And that's what it felt like.
- 34:57It was like live with a weighted vest on your chest, but just on your chest, not on your back.
- 35:04So to answer your question, it was incrementally felt better, better, better, better.
- 35:10I always will have scar tissue though.
- 35:13So I always feel this scar tissue, a little bit of a pull all the time.
- 35:18But then I think that is...
- 35:22part of just the mastectomy of scraping on all the breast tissue.
- 35:28So I noticed on your Instagram, you don't even list the 22 legends, which would have been at Mayhem.
- 35:36Is it because of where you placed or because of how you felt or it just wasn't something you wanted to remember?
- 35:44Because of where I placed.
- 35:48I
- 35:50think I placed, I don't know, next to the bottom.
- 35:55And it was just a really bad experience for me.
- 36:00And it was a good experience because when I got there, I got to see all my friends.
- 36:10the women in the 60 plus division.
- 36:14So 60, 65, all above that.
- 36:17We don't, majority of the time we know each other.
- 36:20We've been competing next to each other for a long time.
- 36:24So, um, I knew a lot of like at legends, I knew a lot of the 60 to 64 ladies I have just aged up.
- 36:31So it was fun seeing them compete, like standing on the sideline and watching them compete.
- 36:36Um,
- 36:38And so going to Legends at Mayhem, Mayhem was great because also I said, well, I'm not feeling that good.
- 36:47I'm going to make the best of it and I'm going to help volunteer.
- 36:52And so Patty McGill and I put down lines on floors.
- 36:57We put stuff out.
- 36:59We just helped them set up.
- 37:01And it was a really good experience because we got to meet Rich.
- 37:05We got to meet Rory.
- 37:06And
- 37:09They were really nice and it was fun.
- 37:13But then again, I competed and I crapped the bed.
- 37:20And just so people realize, I'm going to read off a couple of your finishes that it's not typical for you to finish next to last or whatever it was because I didn't even look it up.
- 37:3219 legends first, 20 legends second, 21 legends third, 21 CrossFit games eighth, 22 MFC first, 23 legends first.
- 37:48You get old, you get more opportunities.
- 37:53I think it's more than that.
- 37:54I think it's you're really fit.
- 38:02So now this is your first year in 65 plus.
- 38:05Yes.
- 38:07The field has been opened up from 10 big time for the games this year.
- 38:12To 20.
- 38:13For 65 plus, it's 20.
- 38:18So is this your go year?
- 38:23Yes.
- 38:25I'm certainly going to try this year to go.
- 38:27And what's the goal at the games?
- 38:30Because you will be in the youngest in that bracket now.
- 38:35Well, keep in mind there are two other ladies that are amazing that I know of, just off the top of my head, that are also aging up, and that's Patty McGill and Susan Clark.
- 38:47And Susan wins every time she goes.
- 38:50You think Susan's good?
- 38:54She's amazing.
- 38:55She's so nice, too.
- 38:57And it's funny.
- 38:59All these ladies are so nice.
- 39:00I love Patty.
- 39:01I love all the ladies.
- 39:04They're amazing.
- 39:06We have a push that we're going to hope to eventually have a 70-plus.
- 39:14And so that you'd have 65 to 69 and a 70 plus.
- 39:18And I think we will by the time I'm 70, I hope.
- 39:25Because I don't want to stop.
- 39:27Yeah.
- 39:28Do you know Lana Marcin?
- 39:30Oh, she's the one who told me that.
- 39:32She said, say hi.
- 39:34Yeah.
- 39:38Her push is just to get five-year age brackets on the leaderboard so people know it's possible.
- 39:45Like, let's just start there.
- 39:47And I love that.
- 39:48How much can that cost, CrossFit, to add three more age groups?
- 39:53And they're not even asking to come to the games yet.
- 39:56They just want it out there so people know it's possible.
- 40:00I see.
- 40:01Yeah.
- 40:04And then you get participation, and then you can prove that you should have a spot.
- 40:13I think...
- 40:15It's really interesting because I think participation is a huge, it's like people want that.
- 40:24They want the ability to go, but then like even with the scale division for Legends, they had to actually backfill quite a lot.
- 40:38So I talked to Joe or Bob about that.
- 40:42I think it was Bob and he was like, you know, everybody asks for it and then nobody signed up or was willing to come.
- 40:48Right.
- 40:49And, and what do you do as an event organizer in that situation?
- 40:54You know, you have to do, you have to run it economically enough to be able to, to at least pay for the event at the very minimum.
- 41:03Right.
- 41:05And so that that's tough.
- 41:10I don't know what the right answer is.
- 41:12I just know that the group of ladies in the 60 to 64 now and in the 65 plus, that I believe they're willing to continue to compete and do their best to travel around to do it.
- 41:33I know a lady that came from Chile two years ago
- 41:37It was chilling.
- 41:41To compete at Legends in San Diego.
- 41:44So there are people out there that are willing, that love the sport so much they were willing to do it.
- 41:54But also, as you get older, things come up.
- 41:58You know, like- True.
- 42:00Breast cancer, shoulder surgeries, all that stuff.
- 42:02It's a matter of trying to manage all those things.
- 42:07Deaths, births, retirements.
- 42:10Isn't that more prototypical of the average CrossFitter and more inspirational to what they're overcoming in everyday life?
- 42:22I think you overcoming breast cancer speaks to way more women than your 110 pound snatch.
- 42:34I, I was so lucky though.
- 42:39I was talking to someone the other day about, you know, or why, you know, someone say, why, why me?
- 42:46Why is this happening to me about someone else?
- 42:48I was like, things happen.
- 42:51It's just, it's not that it happened to you.
- 42:55It's that how, how are you going to set yourself up to go through it, get through it and, and end up on the other side in a better position.
- 43:06and understand things just happen and good things or bad things happen to good people and it happens well i will tell you this good things happen to good people too because when i was at legends like i can't even tell how old people are like i could not even like if you would if you'd have asked me what age group you're in i would have said 50 to 54 oh you're so sweet
- 43:34Like, and I'm not even joking.
- 43:35Like, and it's, and you're not an outlier.
- 43:38Like it's across the board.
- 43:39Yeah.
- 43:41Like everybody just looks 10 years younger.
- 43:43I, and I think it's the diet too, honestly.
- 43:50Um,
- 43:52We're doing a challenge right now through our gym.
- 43:55And so we've cleaned up our diets a little bit.
- 43:59It's more about what you put in your mouth.
- 44:01And I was like, oh, my skin looks a lot better today.
- 44:04I've been on it two weeks.
- 44:06I'm like, oh, of course.
- 44:07Eat well.
- 44:10But I don't always eat well.
- 44:12Yeah.
- 44:14Yeah, my wife and I are trying to be whole foods.
- 44:18Oh, yeah.
- 44:20And you can tell the difference within two weeks.
- 44:24Absolutely.
- 44:25And that's why nutrition is the base of the CrossFit pyramid.
- 44:30Absolutely.
- 44:31And when that video in 2016, I believe I was 186 pounds at that point.
- 44:37I was like, oh, if
- 44:45Almost 40 pounds.
- 44:48But it took me a long time to lose that weight.
- 44:51Oh, Queenie.
- 44:53Yes, she says you are amazing, Denise.
- 44:55So sweet.
- 44:58Thank you.
- 45:00I know this was supposed to be about legends, but I am infatuated with your story.
- 45:05Thanks.
- 45:05You go through all of this stuff.
- 45:08You came off the top of the show talking about very in-depth about the gym you found and started CrossFit in.
- 45:17How much does that gym mean to you?
- 45:20And where were they when you were going through all this?
- 45:23They were there.
- 45:24Well, first of all, how much that gym means to me is that it's my lifeline.
- 45:30Because when I was not allowed to do anything as my mastectomy, the first thing I did when I could drive, because I wasn't allowed to drive for a while, was drive to the gym.
- 45:42And I sat on a box and I watched people work out.
- 45:45I didn't do anything.
- 45:47I just sat there.
- 45:48And I sat there, get the energy of all those people working out, and it made me feel better just soaking in that energy.
- 45:57And our gym is so kind to each other.
- 46:03We have older people in our gym, like my age, and I'm thinking older, over 50.
- 46:11And they are so, they're the rocks of the gym.
- 46:17They show up.
- 46:20They give each other a hard time.
- 46:22Mostly the guys do.
- 46:23They give the girls hang together and the girls, the women hang together and they work out together and they, they, they, um, cheer each other on the guys work together and they give each other a hard time.
- 46:35That's just the way they are, but it's still positive energy.
- 46:40And, uh, so the gym started out real small.
- 46:43Then they went to another gym, uh, another building.
- 46:48and half of the location where they are.
- 46:51And everyone was so used to working out together when they moved that they put their bars next to each other and they had this like area that was way open.
- 47:01And we're like, what do you mean we can use this whole area?
- 47:04We're so used to just being like right here.
- 47:07Part of the thing was not throwing your bar on your neighbor, so.
- 47:13We went through the same thing at my gym.
- 47:15So when I started in 2011, we had a thousand square foot gym that was shared with a volleyball center.
- 47:23And we had teeny tiny little spots.
- 47:26If we needed to double under, we had to go get a piece of plywood out back and bring in and jump on it to be able to double under.
- 47:34It was crazy.
- 47:34And then we got a new facility and the same thing happened.
- 47:37Everybody stayed close together because that's just the spacing we were used to.
- 47:41Right.
- 47:43And you weren't used to that extra space, and I was like, all of a sudden, wow.
- 47:47And I wish I had the number of how many members are at Resolution CrossFit.
- 47:56I've been told.
- 47:57But they actually have two locations.
- 47:59Take it out there.
- 48:02Pino Cal, Rockland, as usual.
- 48:05So sweet.
- 48:06So there is, oh my gosh.
- 48:09Hey, Zazzle.
- 48:11There is another life that I have, kind of.
- 48:16All these people are part of the cat rescue.
- 48:22So I would help Sarah kitten cuddle room.
- 48:31And she would live stream her cats, mostly kittens, sometimes live births,
- 48:41on live stream and for everyone to watch.
- 48:46And that process was to get people to come adopt the animals.
- 48:52And so I would help her carry cat litter because cat litter is heavy and do all the heavy stuff and also some of the tech stuff.
- 49:01So all of those people are part of my cat life.
- 49:06And cats are important to you?
- 49:08Yeah, I have four.
- 49:10Cats are very important.
- 49:11My Instagram basically is for cats and CrossFit and the squirrel, but that's new.
- 49:19The squirrel.
- 49:20I did not see the squirrel.
- 49:22There's a highlight.
- 49:23If you look at the highlight, there's something called squirrel.
- 49:30Got it.
- 49:31This year, I put out a bird feeder for the cats.
- 49:34And the bird feeder started getting attacked by the squirrel.
- 49:37And so I gave the squirrel food.
- 49:42And then with the squirrel getting food, I put a camera up because I tried to figure out why the squirrel was stealing, how they were stealing the bowl.
- 49:56And I found out how they stole the bowl.
- 49:59So then I eventually set up an actual feeding station for the squirrel.
- 50:04So that that's what that is.
- 50:06And this was just basically stories.
- 50:07It was kind of a, that's how, that's how he stole this, sold the bowl.
- 50:18I was like, how'd the bowl get across the deck?
- 50:24So there he is stealing the bowl.
- 50:26Well, I don't know if it's a girl or a boy, so.
- 50:30That is so funny.
- 50:31When I was a kid, so I grew up in the woods, and out my back, where my bedroom was, out the back window, there were tons of wildlife, and there were these chipmunks, and I would whistle to them, and they would stop and peer up in my window to listen to me whistle.
- 50:52And my dad, who is not the best of hearing, would hear me whistling and go, what the heck is he doing in there?
- 51:01And it just went on for like a couple of weeks and he came in and he goes, what are you doing?
- 51:06I'm like, I'm whistling to my friends.
- 51:08And he looked out the window and there's these like four chipmunks sitting outside, listening to me whistle.
- 51:14That's amazing.
- 51:16I love it.
- 51:18So, so one of the, one of the things I did prior to the games, uh, was for my shoulder.
- 51:25I thought before shoulder surgery, I did PRP and.
- 51:29uh one other thing i want to bring up about our gym is that we actually have a doctor in our gym we have a doctor's office called the drop-in doc dr schulte and so he did the prp on me so i was able to do that and what's nice about having a doctor in the gym itself is that he could work with my coach and
- 51:51have a conversation and say, All right, this is what we've done.
- 51:54medically.
- 51:55This is probably what you should stay away from physically.
- 52:00And they work together.
- 52:03That is really cool.
- 52:04Because a lot of times you go to a doctor and you mentioned the word CrossFit.
- 52:08And they they're just like, what's that crazy?
- 52:12You're doing that crazy stuff.
- 52:14Like, and so it's cool that you have that integration.
- 52:17That just makes it simpler.
- 52:21I was afraid that when I got, uh, when I asked the surgeon to go in and do something with my shoulder, I basically told him, I said, listen, um, and this was after the games, I said, I need to have, I need to be able to get back to competing.
- 52:39And he didn't take my age into consideration.
- 52:42He basically took my physical, um,
- 52:49Meaning that how physically fit I was to try to understand.
- 52:53He threw the age out and said, okay, she's physically fit.
- 52:57This is what she wants to do.
- 52:58Well, let's get her back to it.
- 53:00And it was nice that I could find a surgeon that would work with me on that.
- 53:08My friend, Jay Birch.
- 53:13Scott and the Chipmunks, the new cover band for Alvin and the Chipmunks.
- 53:17That's funny.
- 53:19And a piano gal wanted to say that you carried 40 pound bags of cat litter up two flights of stairs.
- 53:26Yes.
- 53:28Was it only 40 pounds?
- 53:30Isn't that much?
- 53:34You're such a savage.
- 53:38I think I did.
- 53:39We did a 40 pound dumbbell snatch a couple of weeks ago and it was able to do that.
- 53:45I was like, I have my left shoulder can actually do it.
- 53:48It was exciting.
- 53:49That's great.
- 53:51That's a good sign.
- 53:54So when you were at Legends this year, you had one seventh place finish.
- 54:00Everything else was a first or a second.
- 54:03So we got to work on the swimming.
- 54:06Hey, I didn't drown.
- 54:08And then after that, like you just crushed it.
- 54:11So when you have a competition where you finish, have those finishes, what does that do for your confidence going into the open?
- 54:25I'll be honest with you.
- 54:30The finish for Legends sets me up for the year, meaning that I'm like, all right, what I did last year,
- 54:39to get ready for Legends was the right track.
- 54:44And so part of it was a lot of clean and jerks and a lot of snatching.
- 54:50And the cardio and the Metcons and all that I got from the class.
- 54:55And so my coach, because we were looking at doing weightlifting, we do weightlifting all the time.
- 55:03And then we work on some skills like handstand walk.
- 55:08I can't handstand walk.
- 55:10But that gave me confidence that we're on the right track.
- 55:18That having the strength from the clean and jerk and the snatch
- 55:23just gives you such a great base for all the CrossFit movements.
- 55:33Being able to do 10 unbroken pull-ups, because I don't do butterfly because of my shoulder, but 10 unbroken kipping pull-ups is amazing.
- 55:47But I couldn't do that consistently.
- 55:52without doing all the clean and jerk and the snatch of getting stronger with that those two movements um yeah i don't do butterfly either but it has nothing to do with my shoulder i've tried it i was like i look like a dolphin out of water so
- 56:16Well, it's cool that because all those medals from the half marathons and marathons, you had to have built a really good engine early before you ever started CrossFit.
- 56:27Yeah, but you actually lose it because that's a slow engine.
- 56:32That's basically you just go moving where CrossFit's much different.
- 56:39You have bursts of energy, bursts of – you do your 400s.
- 56:44Rarely, and then if you're doing a 5K, that's a fast run.
- 56:51That's not marathon, half marathon.
- 56:53And so I think that the half marathon marathon is more about what I learned on that was a mindset.
- 57:05Because you get through a half marathon, you get bored.
- 57:10and you get distracted.
- 57:11And to basically be able to keep your eye on the prize.
- 57:17Just continue on.
- 57:18Like, for example, you say I got the very first workout.
- 57:23I got a seven.
- 57:24I'm like, all right, I'm in seventh place.
- 57:27Very first workout.
- 57:28I have to now go up.
- 57:30I'm like, well, that's me and swimming.
- 57:33And so I just have to keep an eye on the prize and then manage because I felt like that was managing my deficit.
- 57:40I knew swimming was going to be my deficit.
- 57:43And part of the swimming issue was with having the implants.
- 57:48I always felt like I was going to have, I had asthma attack.
- 57:53They brought on asthma attacks more than more.
- 57:56I haven't had very many asthma attacks since I've had them out.
- 58:03When I competed in 2020,
- 58:08at Waza, at Wadapalooza, they had to pull me out of the water because I had such a bad asthma attack, I couldn't even finish it.
- 58:16I couldn't even get around the first buoy.
- 58:21And then in 2021 at the Games, that swim was, I had an asthma attack then too.
- 58:31It was, although I got out, I was the one with all the seaweed on her.
- 58:36I don't know if you ever saw that.
- 58:39I came up and there was just seaweed all over.
- 58:42I felt like I was wearing a headdress.
- 58:43I thought that was just for intimidation purposes.
- 58:47That was me.
- 58:52And so that swim at Legends this year, I didn't have an asthma attack.
- 58:56I almost swam like I knew how to swim.
- 59:00I do know how to swim.
- 59:01But all those years with having the implants, I was always being pulled under and crushed.
- 59:08I couldn't breathe.
- 59:09And so that gave me hope.
- 59:12then having the lift right after that i was like oh i get to at least try to do something good because i knew i was going to do well in the lift um and just manage my weights and say go for what i think i need just enough to win
- 59:34So I have two questions left for you.
- 59:37You, you've had great finishes with the implants now that they're out and you feel so much better.
- 59:43Does, do you think your ceiling is a little bit higher than you thought five years ago?
- 59:49Um, I would have never tried a bar muscle up like I did at legends.
- 59:59I was looking around, looking at some of the ladies, like the fifth post on, on, um,
- 1:00:05on my Instagram is that first video is I would have never tried that with implants in and everything.
- 1:00:13My coach was watching that on the video and he goes, Oh, you could have done it.
- 1:00:18And I'm like, I had one hand like pinned under me, but with the implants, I would have never done this.
- 1:00:28And I didn't get up, but that right there gives me hope.
- 1:00:3265 years old.
- 1:00:36killing it that is almost oh my gosh but you can see my one hand is like pinned under me and i was like so i can't remember what the last question was now i'm so sorry that's so good um
- 1:00:57Yeah.
- 1:00:58So I want to thank you so much for being on.
- 1:01:01This was an incredible story, incredible journey.
- 1:01:05We will definitely be staying in touch going through this season and watching how you do throughout all the qualifiers and see if you get your first bar muscle up.
- 1:01:17I don't know if they'll throw them in there.
- 1:01:19I have a feeling that
- 1:01:22The open, they'll have just the regular stuff, like double underwears.
- 1:01:27I talked to Tony Tursky, and he won the 55 to 59 for men.
- 1:01:35And he said originally they weren't going to have bar muscle-ups in the workout.
- 1:01:41It was going to be chest-to-bar for the older athletes.
- 1:01:43And they asked very enthusiastically, please let us show what we can do.
- 1:01:50Yes.
- 1:01:53Being around the sport for as long as you have, do you think that's a problem with the older athletes that some of the event organizers are afraid to let you show what you can do?
- 1:02:05It's difficult, I believe, when they program a certain workout.
- 1:02:13And what the older people want to see is a workout that progresses, right?
- 1:02:20Meaning that you start out with regular pull-ups, chest to bar, and then if you can do it, bar muscle up.
- 1:02:28And the same thing goes with handstand walk.
- 1:02:31Let the people, let's get the basic done.
- 1:02:35And those people that can handstand walk, let them show it at the end.
- 1:02:39And I think that sometimes when they program a workout, they don't have the ability to do that progression.
- 1:02:47And so when they can, that's fantastic when it's a higher skill, higher skill set.
- 1:02:56It's almost like the old open programming when, before they added a scale division.
- 1:03:03So like in 2013, when you and I started, there was no scale division and I spent, I, you know, I don't know, remember the time, eight minutes trying to get a chest to bar.
- 1:03:17I remember that workout.
- 1:03:19I walked out of the gym crying.
- 1:03:25For me, it was opposite because I got so close that it gave me all the juice I needed to come back and work on it the next week.
- 1:03:37If that makes sense.
- 1:03:39That's fantastic.
- 1:03:42I was so frustrated with that particular one that I was like,
- 1:03:47I wore myself out doing them beforehand so that when we went to the workout, I had nothing, nothing left.
- 1:03:54And that's what frustrated me.
- 1:03:56And so that was a great learning moment for me going, know how much to warm up so that you have enough for the workout itself.
- 1:04:09But remember that we're open workout that started out with, uh, ring muscles.
- 1:04:15Yeah, see, that was a couple years later, and that's when everything changed, when they had the scale division and all of that.
- 1:04:23I almost don't like the scale division.
- 1:04:25I like the progression into a hard movement that you could try.
- 1:04:31Right.
- 1:04:33Like, for a handstand walk, it would be great if you start out with wall walks.
- 1:04:38Right.
- 1:04:39And the other thing is, if you can do that progression also with weights...
- 1:04:45whether it's snatch, you do three rounds at this weight and then three rounds at the next weight up, which they've done in the past.
- 1:04:54Yeah.
- 1:04:55But they also put a time on it.
- 1:04:57Well, you remember the first ever workout we did in that open was burpees and snatches that increased in weight.
- 1:05:08And it started very light.
- 1:05:11Yeah.
- 1:05:11And then progressed pretty aggressively.
- 1:05:13Yeah.
- 1:05:15Because at the time, for me, the second level, I was going to have to give everything I had to get it.
- 1:05:25Yeah.
- 1:05:25Are you signed up for the Open?
- 1:05:28I mean, I will.
- 1:05:29I've signed up for every Open since 13.
- 1:05:30Okay.
- 1:05:31I've already signed up.
- 1:05:34Are you a judge?
- 1:05:35I take the judge's class.
- 1:05:37I have to... So I used to be a judge...
- 1:05:40like at regionals and I've judged rogue and all of that since I've done the media stuff, I feel like a very big conflict of interest.
- 1:05:49Okay.
- 1:05:52So I have, I have not judged since 2021, 2021 MFS, 2022 MFC was my last event that I judged.
- 1:06:03I always take the judge's course and help with judging on our Friday night lights.
- 1:06:10And also Cindy and I have to judge each other for the online qualifier for the Masters.
- 1:06:20Yeah, I thought about doing it for that because my co-host Jamie, like sometimes I go up and I film her and do stuff like that.
- 1:06:30So Jeffrey Birchfield says he has signed up for both.
- 1:06:39Perfect.
- 1:06:40He's a great judge.
- 1:06:42He judges at Rogue, all those types of places, but that dude's so inspiring.
- 1:06:51He does a lot of garage workouts, and they're way harder than I want it to be.
- 1:06:57Well, thank you for doing both.
- 1:07:00So, well, gosh, I could keep talking to you forever, Denise.
- 1:07:04I'm sorry.
- 1:07:06Thank you so much for being on here.
- 1:07:08And again, we will follow you through the season and see how you're doing.
- 1:07:13Check in with you, try to get you back on and talk about kind of the format, how it's going, all of those things and enjoy the rest of your day.
- 1:07:22And thank you so much for everything.
- 1:07:25It's been a lovely hour with you.
- 1:07:27Thank you, Scott.
- 1:07:28Oh, thank you.
- 1:07:30Thank you in the chat too.
- 1:07:31You guys have been awesome.
- 1:07:32We love you all.
- 1:07:33We'll catch everybody next time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 1:07:38Bye, guys.
