• 0:51
Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, hope that you're having a good day.
• 0:55
Speaker 4: I am about to get ready to talk to a
• 0:59
Speaker 4: friend of mine that goes way way way back. I
• 1:03
Speaker 4: have my my my co host Hollis Lewis in the
• 1:06
Speaker 4: building and the football Queen Lise Odie on the other end,
• 1:11
Speaker 4: and I have to just kind.
• 1:13
Speaker 5: Of tell this story before before we get going.
• 1:19
Speaker 4: It was interesting to me I played in the North
• 1:21
Speaker 4: South game in who knows how long ago.
• 1:25
Speaker 5: That was. But the biggest name, you know, we don't need.
• 1:31
Speaker 4: Day, the biggest name in in the state for the
• 1:37
Speaker 4: game was Kurt Warner and me and a buddy of
• 1:39
Speaker 4: mine who's passed away, Eddie ray Dyas we couldn't wait
• 1:43
  Speaker 4: to see him.
• 1:44
Speaker 5: Like we wanted. We wanted to look at him.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: We wanted to see and we wanted to size him
• 1:48
Speaker 4: up to just to see like, you know, because he
• 1:51
Speaker 4: was from Pinefuls so that you know, it wasn't Triple A,
• 1:54
Speaker 4: so we wanted to kind of see what he.
• 1:56
Speaker 5: Was like, uh huh.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: So we wait, we help him with his bags and
• 2:01
Speaker 4: we're talking with him and all this kind of stuff.
• 2:05
Speaker 5: And when he got on the field and.
• 2:07
Speaker 4: He couldn't he couldn't do the full tackling and all
• 2:11
Speaker 4: that because he was late because he was getting the O. J.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: Simpson Awards, so you know, which again speaks how how
• 2:18
Speaker 4: talented he was. So now he's out on the field
• 2:23
Speaker 4: and man, when he got the ball the first time,
• 2:25
Speaker 4: I was like, oh my god, like what.
• 2:30
Speaker 5: Like what just happened? So Kurt, are you out there?
• 2:35
Speaker 6: Yes, sir, I heard you.
• 2:40
Speaker 4: Well, And again I want to make sure I have
• 2:43
Speaker 4: Hollis Lewis here and Lisa Odie Okay, so that you
• 2:46
Speaker 4: know the other voices around and Kurt, I've looked at
• 2:51
Speaker 4: your bio. I've looked at your bio, man, and it is.
• 2:54
Speaker 4: It is phenomenal and full of everything. From Rookie of
• 3:02
Speaker 4: the Year, basically Offensive Player of the Year, three Pro Bowls,
• 3:08
Speaker 4: All Rookie Team, Ring of Honor, a national championship, I
• 3:14
Speaker 4: mean all all an All American team.
• 3:16
Speaker 5: In eighty one. Bruh.
• 3:20
Speaker 4: Like tell us like when you reflect back and you
• 3:26
Speaker 4: look at this, and and and for the people who
• 3:29
Speaker 4: don't know you, I kind of make it. I will
• 3:33
Speaker 4: probably make the case. You probably don't even go back
• 3:35
Speaker 4: and even think about it, But when you hear it,
• 3:39
Speaker 4: what do you think, like, Well, how does it make
• 3:42
  Speaker 4: you like?
• 3:43
Speaker 5: Because man, that's a great career.
• 3:47
Speaker 6: Well let's start with the high school game in Charleston,
• 3:50
Speaker 6: West Virginia. First. Okay, when you and Ray I thought
• 3:57
Speaker 6: I thought we were like best at that moment. Come
• 4:03
Speaker 6: to find all you guys for size. That's why most
• 4:11
Speaker 6: of all, yes, yes, hey let me help you with
• 4:14
Speaker 6: your bag, Hey, let me the room, Yeah, let me
• 4:19
Speaker 6: help Youah. Okay, these guys be nice guy's a triple A. Guys,
• 4:24
  Speaker 6: I'm a single a guy regards to I'm the West
• 4:27
Speaker 6: Virginia out in the Boonie. So yeah, that's that's.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: What that's that's the new story for you.
• 4:37
Speaker 6: Now I have I'll tell you something. I had a blast.
• 4:41
Speaker 6: It was the most fun I've ever had playing against
• 4:45
Speaker 6: guys like you and anyway in practice and then having
• 4:48
Speaker 6: an opportunity to play in the game, and then our
• 4:52
Speaker 6: friendship over the years. Yes, and really it's been a
• 4:57
Speaker 6: good friendship. So I appreciate that.
• 5:00
  Speaker 7: So.
• 5:01
Speaker 6: Uh so that's where I'll start. Okay, we can we
• 5:04
  Speaker 6: can move on.
• 5:06
Speaker 4: How you doing, miss Warner? This is how Hollis lewis.
• 5:09
Speaker 4: Oh you can't call him mister Warner.
• 5:10
Speaker 5: You can't get it back. Well, how are you doing?
• 5:16
Speaker 4: So you're being from like, as you mentioned, the Boonies, Pineville.
• 5:20
Speaker 4: But what people may not know that area collectively Wyoming
• 5:24
Speaker 4: Mother's different things of that nature. I mean, you have
• 5:26
Speaker 4: some some athletic legends. You know, you got Nick sabans
• 5:30
Speaker 4: Uh yourself, you got Christy Martin, the first female superstar, boxing,
• 5:35
Speaker 4: Dan Antonio, basketball coaches, and and just a whole host
• 5:38
Speaker 4: about the What was it about growing up in that
• 5:41
Speaker 4: area that spawned so many, you know, high level athletes
• 5:44
  Speaker 4: and coaches.
• 5:46
  Speaker 6: That's a good question. I don't know. Other we just
• 5:51
Speaker 6: played against one another growing up at a very high level.
• 5:57
Speaker 6: And uh, I had a couple of cousins that were
• 6:01
Speaker 6: just phenomenal basketball players governor of Frankie Warner and Eugene Warner.
• 6:07
Speaker 6: They were just legendary. So I got to watch these
• 6:10
Speaker 6: guys in action at Pineval High School, and I had
• 6:13
Speaker 6: a number of other relatives and friends who had come
• 6:17
Speaker 6: up through that Pine Built connection, and it was it
• 6:21
Speaker 6: was it was competitive. I mean, it was just you know,
• 6:26
Speaker 6: they talk about the Friday night fights and the Saturday
• 6:29
Speaker 6: night lights and all the other stuff, and this was
• 6:31
Speaker 6: exactly that way. I mean, it was just we didn't
• 6:34
Speaker 6: like each other in that area, but it was it
• 6:41
Speaker 6: was really good competition. And I got to see a
• 6:43
Speaker 6: lot of it growing up and got to participate in it.
• 6:46
Speaker 6: So I think that helped me right along the way.
• 6:48
Speaker 8: So awesome, Hey there, I want to call you, mister
• 6:53
Speaker 8: Warner all said, like Collins said, But I guess I'll
• 6:56
Speaker 8: go back to Kurt.
• 6:57
Speaker 9: How's that? So this is Lisa Kurk.
• 7:00
Speaker 8: Good to Okay, thank you. It's good to have you
• 7:04
Speaker 8: on the podcast tonight, so thank you. Yes, So I'm
• 7:07
Speaker 8: looking back at your history, Like Carl said, it's so
• 7:09
Speaker 8: impressive seeing all of the accomplishments that you've had in
• 7:12
Speaker 8: football throughout your career.
• 7:14
  Speaker 9: You were also.
• 7:15
Speaker 8: Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in two
• 7:17
Speaker 8: thousand and nine. Then eventually during that time period, I
• 7:21
Speaker 8: think you were playing for the Nitney Lions of course Penn.
• 7:23
Speaker 9: State, and so walk me through how did you end up?
• 7:30
Speaker 8: Were there other schools in the state that were recruiting
• 7:32
Speaker 8: actively recruiting you, and how did you decide that, you know,
• 7:35
Speaker 8: your your college career, the path you took was to
• 7:37
Speaker 8: go to Penn State and play for the Nitney Lions.
• 7:43
Speaker 9: Did I open a can of worms with that question?
• 7:46
Speaker 6: I like it, I like it, good question. You are correct.
• 7:53
Speaker 6: I did have a number of the schools who were
• 7:57
Speaker 6: interested in my services at that now, uh, and we
• 8:02
Speaker 6: didn't have the nil thing, so it was, you know,
• 8:04
Speaker 6: just the the you know, it was what it is,
• 8:07
Speaker 6: what it was, and so on and so forth, et cetera,
• 8:09
Speaker 6: et cetera. So I did, uh, I did have an
• 8:14
Speaker 6: opportunity to visit wn b U Uh. I narrowed it
• 8:20
  Speaker 6: down to w w U Tent, Penn State. I looked
• 8:27
Speaker 6: at Notre Dame, uh, Nebraska. Tom Osbourne came to my
• 8:32
Speaker 6: house in the middle of the winter and west by
• 8:34
Speaker 6: God's Virginia, and yeah, it wasn't impressed. I was impressed. Uh.
• 8:43
Speaker 6: And then I had Paternal to come down, and it
• 8:48
Speaker 6: was you know, I knew I wanted to play at
• 8:51
  Speaker 6: a at a high level, and I had I had
• 8:56
Speaker 6: heard about Penn State and Paternal uh and kid in
• 9:02
Speaker 6: West Virginia. And once I went to visit the various
• 9:08
Speaker 6: collegist schools universities, Uh, it just it was the right pick,
• 9:13
Speaker 6: you know, with regards to Penn stay. Now, now you
• 9:17
Speaker 6: had Robert Alexander and uh so that was kind of
• 9:22
Speaker 6: a gauge as far as what I was looking at
• 9:26
Speaker 6: and what I was gonna do. And I just, you know,
• 9:30
Speaker 6: let let Robert stay there. I'll go somewhere else. And
• 9:35
Speaker 6: that was kind of what I was thinking with regards
• 9:37
Speaker 6: to that. So it wasn't go.
• 9:40
Speaker 4: Ahead, Oh, Kurt, I was gonna I was gonna ask
• 9:43
Speaker 4: this question as a as kind of a follow up. Also,
• 9:48
Speaker 4: I think one of the interesting components that I thought
• 9:51
Speaker 4: was you were like at that time you talked about
• 9:55
Speaker 4: the eye back position, you know, right, that was you know,
• 10:01
Speaker 4: in order to pick a school doing what you did
• 10:04
Speaker 4: and what and the position and how you played. Those
• 10:08
Speaker 4: were teams, the primary teams that you're talking about were
• 10:12
Speaker 4: already had advanced to the eyeback formation with the toss
• 10:17
Speaker 4: sweep and that type of thing, compared to and I
• 10:21
Speaker 4: think WU had just kind of got there because because
• 10:25
Speaker 4: when Robert first got there, they were in the near
• 10:28
  Speaker 4: far backs.
• 10:29
  Speaker 5: Kind of stuff.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: And I know this is technical football kind of talk,
• 10:32
Speaker 4: but what which never fits?
• 10:36
Speaker 5: It can't fit an.
• 10:38
Speaker 4: Eyeback because an eye back is just a it's a
• 10:40
Speaker 4: natural it's a natural skill set of being able to
• 10:43
Speaker 4: find where to go.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: Am I right on that?
• 10:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, they were running a veer offense where it was
• 10:50
Speaker 6: faith on one side and you put to the other
• 10:52
Speaker 6: side and no blocking in front of you. Not really
• 10:55
Speaker 6: you didn't have a fullback in front, right, And I'm like,
• 11:02
Speaker 6: you know, so I passed. I said, hey, you know what,
• 11:05
Speaker 6: that's just not for me. That's not a good fit
• 11:07
Speaker 6: for me. Uh. And I could see what Robert Alexander
• 11:11
Speaker 6: was doing, So if it wasn't gonna work for him,
• 11:13
Speaker 6: Surely the goodness is not gonna work for me as well.
• 11:15
Speaker 6: I figured he let's go in a different direction.
• 11:18
Speaker 4: So, now, being that you were from such a small
• 11:22
Speaker 4: town in West Virginia, what or maybe the better question
• 11:26
Speaker 4: is who gave you sort of the guidance and perspective
• 11:28
Speaker 4: to think so big and large about particularly like coming
• 11:32
Speaker 4: from Pineville and possibly considering Notre Dame on Nebraska or
• 11:35
Speaker 4: some of these big schools.
• 11:37
  Speaker 6: Huh, that's that's that's a good question as well. You
• 11:40
Speaker 6: know where I grew up, you had a couple of options. Uh.
• 11:46
Speaker 6: You know, I'm not the smartest guy in the classroom,
• 11:49
Speaker 6: so uh it was just one of them.
• 11:56
  Speaker 5: Iom.
• 12:00
Speaker 6: You know, you you got to you gotta make your
• 12:03
Speaker 6: you gotta make your hey when you have an opportunity
• 12:05
Speaker 6: to do that, and uh so it's just it was,
• 12:12
Speaker 6: it was. It was a challenging fit because I obviously
• 12:16
Speaker 6: went up there to to look around and to visit
• 12:18
Speaker 6: the campuses and to see the the the competition and
• 12:22
Speaker 6: so on and so forth, and there was a lot
• 12:25
Speaker 6: of competition at that level.
• 12:29
Speaker 4: Now, Now, did you have like a coach or or
• 12:31
Speaker 4: your like your your parents advising you at this time?
• 12:35
Speaker 6: Well, I had a person by the name of Liddy McKinney,
• 12:39
Speaker 6: believe it or not. She was my English teacher. Her husband,
• 12:43
Speaker 6: Darryl McKinney, was a coach at Pineville High School years before,
• 12:47
Speaker 6: so he coached my, my cousins and so on and
• 12:50
Speaker 6: so forth. And it was it was kind of through
• 12:53
Speaker 6: her because I had all of these people converging on Timeeville,
• 12:58
Speaker 6: West Virginia, and I knew really knows sick and can
• 13:01
Speaker 6: come here. So I kind of just she was kind
• 13:04
Speaker 6: of like my agent at the time, and I trusted
• 13:10
Speaker 6: her to be able to narrow it down or help
• 13:12
Speaker 6: me narrow it down to a certain degree. And she
• 13:16
Speaker 6: was a big Joe Paterno fan, so that that kind
• 13:19
Speaker 6: of pushed me in that direction. And she was pushing
• 13:23
Speaker 6: me in that direction, but I still wanted to go
• 13:25
Speaker 6: and see the other opportunities that were out there. I
• 13:29
Speaker 6: went up to pitt and I did not get a
• 13:33
Speaker 6: chance to go to Nebraska and Notre Dame because of
• 13:36
Speaker 6: weather issues. But you know, more importantly, I wanted my
• 13:42
Speaker 6: parents and my friends to be able to come at
• 13:44
Speaker 6: least to be able to drive from where we were
• 13:46
Speaker 6: playing to watch the game. I needed them to be
• 13:49
Speaker 6: involved in that process. And I'm sure glad I did
• 13:52
Speaker 6: it because my old man, good God, bless his soul,
• 13:56
Speaker 6: he's passed away. But man, he loved going to Penn State.
• 13:59
Speaker 6: He loved of having holding courts and being able to,
• 14:03
Speaker 6: you know, to be a part of that process. So
• 14:06
Speaker 6: I was close enough. Yet I was in an arena
• 14:10
Speaker 6: where I could play at you know, against some talent,
• 14:16
Speaker 6: very talented teams and opportunities. So it was a combination
• 14:20
Speaker 6: of both of those things. When it's all said and.
• 14:22
  Speaker 8: Pat, yeah, that's really that's a great story. So let's
• 14:26
Speaker 8: go back. We'll just stay on this train with the
• 14:29
Speaker 8: Penn State conversation, Kurt, if you don't mind. So your
• 14:32
Speaker 8: tenure there was between the years of nineteen seventy nine
• 14:35
Speaker 8: and nineteen eighty two, and you guys won the national
• 14:39
Speaker 8: championship that year. I think Carl alluded to that in
• 14:41
Speaker 8: his introduction of you. What was it like to go
• 14:43
Speaker 8: through that experience with Joe Paterno?
• 14:48
Speaker 6: Oh man, another good question.
• 14:52
Speaker 9: We're just loaded with good questions for you. We're going
• 14:55
Speaker 9: to get are we making it too hard?
• 15:00
Speaker 6: Sometimes? Potno was a bear, Yes, I mean he didn't
• 15:05
Speaker 6: take any stuff from anybody. So he and I respected
• 15:12
Speaker 6: that because he kept us in line because there's a
• 15:14
Speaker 6: lot of talent going on and you can call you
• 15:16
Speaker 6: you know, at that level, there's a lot of talent
• 15:20
Speaker 6: and there's a lot of guys who think that they're
• 15:24
Speaker 6: the best. And you get to you get to play
• 15:27
Speaker 6: it out on the practice field and you get to
• 15:29
Speaker 6: play it out on the football field. But I'll tell
• 15:34
Speaker 6: you what really, uh really got my attention when it
• 15:38
Speaker 6: comes to Joe Paterno is the fact that, you know,
• 15:44
Speaker 6: my freshman year he talked about academics. My freshman year,
• 15:48
Speaker 6: we had to all Americans that were not able to
• 15:54
Speaker 6: play that season because academically they were not there to
• 15:58
Speaker 6: all Americans. Wow, And that got my attention. And what
• 16:03
Speaker 6: he was saying to the rest of is you better
• 16:05
Speaker 6: go to class. You're going to get an education as well.
• 16:09
Speaker 6: So the second day, this is the second day of
• 16:11
Speaker 6: training camp, we had one of our captain who was
• 16:17
Speaker 6: not he was not in the football shape to do
• 16:22
Speaker 6: what was required during that first you know, that first
• 16:27
Speaker 6: day or so, you got to see what kind of
• 16:28
  Speaker 6: shape you're in and it's called I guess a training
• 16:32
Speaker 6: camp shape or whatever you need to be in. So
• 16:34
Speaker 6: we had a guy who was our captain who did
• 16:36
Speaker 6: not make the times that he was allotted from running
• 16:41
Speaker 6: a really which he probably shouldn't have been running it,
• 16:45
Speaker 6: but he just didn't make the time. So he took
• 16:47
Speaker 6: away his cates sit in the first two days of camp.
• 16:53
Speaker 6: Paterno has already set his mark. As far as I'm concerned,
• 16:57
Speaker 6: it's like, you know what, you got to go to class,
• 16:59
Speaker 6: and you don't want to remember this guy because he
• 17:02
Speaker 6: doesn't he doesn't play around. And so you know I
• 17:07
Speaker 6: respected that and and and just by you know, him
• 17:11
Speaker 6: holding us to a certain standard.
• 17:14
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 17:14
Speaker 6: He he backed it up. He didn't just say it,
• 17:17
Speaker 6: he actually executed it. And you've got to respect the guy,
• 17:22
Speaker 6: uh who who lived by those type of rules. So
• 17:27
Speaker 6: as we move forward, you know, we played against some
• 17:29
Speaker 6: pretty good competition, uh you know at Penn State, and
• 17:34
Speaker 6: especially my senior year, we played uh you know, you know,
• 17:38
Speaker 6: guys like Notre Dame, Alabama, Nebraska and and uh, you know,
• 17:44
Speaker 6: it was just a matter of being in the right
• 17:46
Speaker 6: spot at the right time to get to that national
• 17:48
Speaker 6: championship game and the minute to have an opportunity to
• 17:50
Speaker 6: play Georgia. Uh don it's a sugar Bowl. So it
• 17:55
Speaker 6: was just a combination of a lot of different things
• 17:57
Speaker 6: that it happened. And I thought we had a couple
• 17:59
Speaker 6: of other teams that were better than in my senior year.
• 18:04
Speaker 6: My junior year, I thought we had a better football team.
• 18:06
Speaker 6: We just we lost one too many games. We lost
• 18:09
Speaker 6: two games, and we were that's just not going to
• 18:11
Speaker 6: get you in a national championship game. So that year
• 18:15
Speaker 6: we lost one and we were able to compete at
• 18:18
Speaker 6: that level. So you know, it's just a you know,
• 18:22
Speaker 6: the Good Lord looking out for us in that time
• 18:25
Speaker 6: and we had an opportunity to participate at that at
• 18:28
  Speaker 6: that level.
• 18:29
Speaker 5: Kurt, I'm gonna win. Oh I'm sorry, Okay, I want
• 18:34
  Speaker 5: to jump in.
• 18:35
Speaker 4: And and because you're hitting on something that triggers me,
• 18:39
Speaker 4: you know, I go to Marshall and of course the
• 18:42
Speaker 4: record wasn't this and wasn't that, So there was no
• 18:45
Speaker 4: there was no necessarily celebration of being at Marshall at
• 18:49
Speaker 4: that time. But Sonny Randall was there, who was a
• 18:54
Speaker 4: disciplinarian and and you and the thing that.
• 18:58
Speaker 5: What was triggered me as you were talking.
• 19:01
Speaker 4: Coaches who hold you accountable and coaches that you know,
• 19:05
Speaker 4: they don't care how good you are. They're willing to
• 19:09
Speaker 4: sacrifice any and everything for the for the for your betterment.
• 19:15
Speaker 4: So that and when I say for your betterment, that
• 19:18
Speaker 4: you understand you are not this team. You are part
• 19:23
Speaker 4: of it, but you're not this team. Sonny Randall put
• 19:26
Speaker 4: me in study hall. I had like about a one
• 19:29
Speaker 4: seven after like after my freshman year.
• 19:31
Speaker 5: Bro, I was just so happy that I was at Marshall.
• 19:34
Speaker 4: I was playing, I was, you know, getting some acculades
• 19:37
Speaker 4: and people talking about me, and you know, this is
• 19:40
Speaker 4: my first step trying to get to the league, and
• 19:43
Speaker 4: and I'm not thinking school is the last thing on
• 19:46
Speaker 4: my mind. And Sonny made that very clear and bright.
• 19:51
Speaker 4: He made me stay in study hall my entire career
• 19:55
  Speaker 4: at Marshall.
• 19:57
Speaker 5: Because of that. And and today, hey, I don't.
• 20:01
Speaker 4: Know, you know, I don't know if coaches understand the importance.
• 20:07
Speaker 5: You know. I think that sometimes we want to be buddies.
• 20:10
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but if.
• 20:12
Speaker 4: You want to, if you want to impact a kid,
• 20:16
Speaker 4: those coaches like that they impact you.
• 20:20
Speaker 5: Would you would you agree with that?
• 20:22
Speaker 6: Yeah? God, Paterno and I were not friends at all.
• 20:25
Speaker 5: I mean we all hated it.
• 20:28
Speaker 6: Yeah, it wasn't just me. We all hated him because
• 20:31
Speaker 6: he was a bear. But when you go back, you
• 20:35
Speaker 6: visit him after you get out of there, he's a
• 20:38
Speaker 6: whole different person. I'm like, who is this scot? Every
• 20:42
Speaker 6: conversation that we had, I was getting screamed at over something,
• 20:47
Speaker 6: and so I tried to keep it to a minimum
• 20:49
Speaker 6: with regards to that. But when I went back after
• 20:53
Speaker 6: my rookie year, and uh, I went down to the
• 20:57
Speaker 6: Fiestabo and I actually had a conversation with him. Whereas
• 21:01
Speaker 6: we were having a conversation, I'm like, well, this guy's
• 21:03
Speaker 6: you mad? You know what's the story here? But yes,
• 21:10
Speaker 6: you've got to be held accountable. Uh, there is no
• 21:12
Speaker 6: prima donna. There's no prima donna in football. It's not
• 21:16
Speaker 6: going to happen. There's too many bevariables that come into play.
• 21:20
Speaker 6: And it's a team game. It's the ultimate team game
• 21:23
Speaker 6: when it when it comes to sports, as far as
• 21:25
Speaker 6: I'm concerned, and I'm biased about it, but uh, there's
• 21:28
Speaker 6: a lot of lack of lessons that you learned as
• 21:30
Speaker 6: well with regards to sports and what it what it
• 21:33
Speaker 6: does for you, and the opportunities that you have because
• 21:39
Speaker 6: of it. Because like I said, I was not the
• 21:41
Speaker 6: sharpest guy in the classroom. Let's not get usselves. But
• 21:44
Speaker 6: I had an opportunity, uh to uh to move forward,
• 21:50
Speaker 6: uh to not be a coal miner. Because it's either
• 21:53
Speaker 6: you're going to get out of here one way, or
• 21:55
Speaker 6: you're gonna go into coal mines and do something else.
• 21:57
Speaker 6: And it is what it is.
• 22:02
  Speaker 5: That was.
• 22:04
Speaker 6: Let the guy's on the truth either because I'm not
• 22:07
Speaker 6: gonna get out of there either either way unless there's
• 22:10
Speaker 6: something else that provides me an opportunity to to do
• 22:15
Speaker 6: in that direction. In the direction anyway.
• 22:18
Speaker 4: So just on the field when you get to Penn State,
• 22:21
Speaker 4: I believe that initially he play some running back, obviously,
• 22:25
Speaker 4: but you also did some special teams. And I want
• 22:27
Speaker 4: to say, and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
• 22:29
Speaker 4: your first touch, the first college touch, you were a
• 22:33
  Speaker 4: kick returning.
• 22:33
Speaker 5: You took it to the house. Am I correct?
• 22:36
Speaker 6: That is not correct? But that's okay, you know, we
• 22:38
Speaker 6: can exaggerate it. I talked to Bill cot He's just
• 22:46
Speaker 6: a great friend of mine, and he says, say, you
• 22:48
Speaker 6: know what, one thing you got to learn to tell
• 22:50
Speaker 6: his stories, Kurt. It's a Penn State guy. He said,
• 22:52
Speaker 6: you gotta embellish. We're not gonna mbell it's almost broken.
• 23:00
Speaker 6: I was pretty closed. But I do score three touchdowns
• 23:04
Speaker 6: that day, So what do you know?
• 23:05
Speaker 5: And that was and that was your first college game.
• 23:08
Speaker 6: That was my first college game.
• 23:09
Speaker 5: So how was that?
• 23:10
Speaker 4: I mean, you're come, like I said, you're coming from Pinesville,
• 23:13
Speaker 4: first college game, You're going through the camp all that,
• 23:15
Speaker 4: then you finally get at a major university and pen st.
• 23:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, and then then you know, you get three tds?
• 23:23
Speaker 5: Like what was that feeling after?
• 23:27
Speaker 6: Well? Uh, there were so many stories going on. I
• 23:34
  Speaker 6: really don't I don't know. I mean, how did they
• 23:36
Speaker 6: find Joe Paterno? Or how did Joe find this guy
• 23:40
Speaker 6: in Pineville, West Virginia. That was the biggest story. Who
• 23:43
  Speaker 6: are you.
• 23:44
Speaker 9: Waver for social media or any of that. Yeah, that's
• 23:47
  Speaker 9: amazing social media.
• 23:49
Speaker 6: And I think everybody in Pineville in that area was
• 23:51
Speaker 6: probably shot that I had that type of a game.
• 23:55
Speaker 6: Even I was shocked that I had that type of
• 23:57
Speaker 6: a game. Uh, but uh, it was It was quite
• 24:02
Speaker 6: a day. Uh but uh it was a lot of fun.
• 24:06
Speaker 6: I had a great time and I was able to
• 24:09
Speaker 6: play on a great football team. And my freshman year on.
• 24:13
Speaker 6: So it was it was a good opportunity when you
• 24:16
  Speaker 6: go back.
• 24:17
Speaker 5: When you when you look back at your.
• 24:20
Speaker 4: Senior year at Poneville and because I'm I'm just going
• 24:26
Speaker 4: from the North South game and seeing you in that
• 24:30
Speaker 4: and the whole issue between you know, who's going to
• 24:33
Speaker 4: be the best tail back? You were ready armstand like
• 24:37
Speaker 4: when you were when you were I know, I knew
• 24:41
Speaker 4: that would bring I knew that would bring bring back
• 24:43
Speaker 4: a memory. So when you when you're when you're walking
• 24:49
Speaker 4: around there and you're trying to figure out who you are,
• 24:53
Speaker 4: are you understanding like the expectation of the people in
• 24:58
Speaker 4: Poneville and the outs of the people who hadn't necessarily
• 25:03
Speaker 4: seen you play. Did that ever have anything? Did you
• 25:08
Speaker 4: think anything about that? Did you ever want to say, Hey,
• 25:11
Speaker 4: I want to prove something wrong, like I want to
• 25:13
Speaker 4: I want to prove these people wrong that I am
• 25:15
Speaker 4: this kind of a player.
• 25:16
  Speaker 5: Because I know I was.
• 25:18
Speaker 4: I was wholeheartedly that way, you know, because you know,
• 25:23
Speaker 4: you know, my whole thing at Marshall.
• 25:25
Speaker 5: I was happy to.
• 25:26
Speaker 4: Be at Marshall, but I knew where Marshall was at
• 25:29
Speaker 4: the time, you know, and so I wanted to prove
• 25:34
Speaker 4: there was something I needed to prove to folks who
• 25:37
Speaker 4: who doubted me. Who there were people who said I
• 25:40
Speaker 4: wouldn't even play at Marshall. So I have to believe
• 25:43
Speaker 4: that there was that motivation. Some of that motivation came
• 25:46
Speaker 4: from I want to prove these people wrong.
• 25:50
Speaker 5: Am I right there?
• 25:52
  Speaker 6: Yes? You are, You're You're completely right. I mean, there's
• 25:55
  Speaker 6: always a chip on one shoulder, and there's there's you've
• 26:00
Speaker 6: got to have a reason to say, you know, I
• 26:03
Speaker 6: can play at this level. And I believe that I
• 26:06
Speaker 6: could play at that level from day one. But it
• 26:10
  Speaker 6: wasn't just because I, you know I it wasn't something
• 26:18
Speaker 6: that I thought about with regards to well and my
• 26:23
Speaker 6: second guessing what I can do and what I can't do.
• 26:27
Speaker 6: I felt as though I could play there. I belonged there,
• 26:30
Speaker 6: and now it was just an opportunity to get out
• 26:33
Speaker 6: there and chill with me. That's really you got to
• 26:37
Speaker 6: prove it to a certain degree because nobody's going to
• 26:39
Speaker 6: give you anything, especially at that level when you've got
• 26:43
Speaker 6: five six I mean, I remember going into our running
• 26:46
Speaker 6: back room and they had, you know, the guys on
• 26:49
Speaker 6: the board my freshman year and there was like seven
• 26:53
Speaker 6: eight guys on that list, and I remember seeing that
• 26:56
Speaker 6: and I was at the bottom of the list, and
• 26:58
Speaker 6: it wasn't because my last name was said, I was
• 27:02
Speaker 6: on the bottom of that list. That's thinking myself, Okay,
• 27:05
Speaker 6: you know what, Well, when I get out of this camp,
• 27:07
Speaker 6: I'm not gonna be on the bottom of this list
• 27:09
Speaker 6: when I finish here as this camp. But that's what
• 27:11
Speaker 6: I was saying to myself. But I was determined not
• 27:15
Speaker 6: to be on that bottom of that list when it
• 27:17
Speaker 6: was all said and done. And so that's, yeah, that's
• 27:22
Speaker 6: what you're up against. You got to find something that says, hey,
• 27:28
Speaker 6: I belong here, I can play here, I can do this,
• 27:30
Speaker 6: But you also have to execute what you're doing because
• 27:34
Speaker 6: it could have verily gone the other way.
• 27:37
Speaker 9: Oh well, take hertis Lisa again.
• 27:40
Speaker 8: So we're gonna keep going down this this memory memory
• 27:44
Speaker 8: trip here, and we're going to take you back to
• 27:45
Speaker 8: the summer of seventy nine.
• 27:48
Speaker 9: You at that time, you were the Kennedy.
• 27:50
Speaker 8: Award winner, and you were also a guest of honor
• 27:52
Speaker 8: at a fundraiser at that time called the Run for Thad.
• 27:56
Speaker 9: You were the honor honoree of that.
• 27:58
Speaker 8: Of that event, and that event was to help establish
• 28:01
Speaker 8: a memorial scholarship fund for it was in memory of
• 28:06
Speaker 8: Thad Snagris, who was a DuPont High School student athlete
• 28:09
Speaker 8: that was killed by a drunk driver in nineteen seventy eight.
• 28:13
Speaker 9: And just to give you an update.
• 28:15
Speaker 8: That year that you were the guest of honor, they
• 28:17
Speaker 8: had raised five hundred dollars and were able to give
• 28:21
Speaker 8: away one single scholarship.
• 28:22
Speaker 9: But now it I just wanted to give you an
• 28:25
  Speaker 9: update to.
• 28:25
Speaker 8: Now that they're giving out this same organization is still
• 28:28
Speaker 8: is still in working and they give out at least
• 28:32
Speaker 8: six scholarships a year at six sixty eight hundred dollars each.
• 28:35
Speaker 9: So just wanted to let.
• 28:37
Speaker 8: You know you were a part of something that has
• 28:39
Speaker 8: really grown and helped a lot of the students at
• 28:41
Speaker 8: the Riverside area of the east end of eastern end
• 28:43
  Speaker 8: of Kannall County.
• 28:45
  Speaker 5: Thank you much.
• 28:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, I was a part of.
• 28:48
Speaker 8: Yeah, So knowing that what are some other charitable you know,
• 28:52
Speaker 8: causes that you're a part of. Now, are there any
• 28:55
Speaker 8: you know near and dear to your heart that you'd
• 28:57
Speaker 8: like to help with?
• 29:01
  Speaker 4: No?
• 29:01
Speaker 6: You know what, I've got a couple of guys that
• 29:03
Speaker 6: are on the Aufie in stec frum. Okay, so I
• 29:06
  Speaker 6: kind of that's spent a lot of I spend a
• 29:09
Speaker 6: lot of time in that arena, sure, working with them
• 29:13
Speaker 6: and making you know, making sure that they're you know.
• 29:19
Speaker 9: Well, that's a charitable cause for for sure.
• 29:21
  Speaker 8: I mean you're you're a part of something that that's very,
• 29:24
Speaker 8: very you know needed.
• 29:25
Speaker 5: So for sure, all right, kats the kittens, have you heard?

Speaker 3: Now back into the conversation.
• 30:56
Speaker 5: We're going to jump to the NFL.
• 30:57
Speaker 4: So, okay, okay, you get drafted. You're the third pick.
• 31:02
Speaker 4: Do you know the two guys that were ahead of you?
• 31:05
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 31:05
  Speaker 6: I know?
• 31:10
Speaker 5: Okay, all right, how did so when you get drafted?
• 31:14
Speaker 4: Now, Now remember now you're talking to a dude who
• 31:16
Speaker 4: came into seventh round, right, sixth big seventh round, so
• 31:19
Speaker 4: so and was happy. So when you when you got
• 31:26
Speaker 4: picked on the day that they picked you, and as
• 31:29
Speaker 4: quick as you went, did it bother you that you
• 31:33
Speaker 4: didn't go in one of.
• 31:34
Speaker 5: Those first two picks or did it matter at.
• 31:37
Speaker 6: All to you? Okay, not at all? You know what,
• 31:42
Speaker 6: I had, no idea that's the when I was gonna
• 31:45
Speaker 6: get picked. Okay, no idea.
• 31:47
  Speaker 4: What.
• 31:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, they didn't tell you that back then. They didn't
• 31:49
  Speaker 5: really they.
• 31:50
  Speaker 6: Didn't tell anybody.
• 31:51
  Speaker 8: No.
• 31:51
Speaker 6: No, we didn't have the ESCN thing right right, you know,
• 31:55
Speaker 6: you know, hugging on the commissioner and all the other staff. No,
• 32:01
Speaker 6: So that that's another story for another day. Uh, it was,
• 32:09
Speaker 6: you know. My agent was Marvin dam Off, and I
• 32:15
Speaker 6: had talked with coach Knox, Chuck Knock. He and his
• 32:18
Speaker 6: wife Shirley came up to Pennsylvania as he was the
• 32:22
Speaker 6: new coach of the Seattle Seahawks at that time. They
• 32:25
Speaker 6: were picked number nine. They had a ninth pick, and
• 32:28
Speaker 6: I remember talking to Gosh, what's the guy's name? The
• 32:32
Speaker 6: the Uh it wasn't the recruiter he was the uh,
• 32:37
Speaker 6: the guy who was the talent scout for the Seattle
• 32:41
  Speaker 6: Ralph gold Steam.
• 32:42
Speaker 5: Now you remember Ralph.
• 32:43
Speaker 6: You never see him round I've heard.
• 32:46
Speaker 5: Why do I know that name?
• 32:48
Speaker 6: Because he was he he was all in the NFL
• 32:51
Speaker 6: around quite a bit with the Seattle Seahouse. He was
• 32:53
Speaker 6: the guy that went out and do the scouting thing.
• 32:56
Speaker 6: So he had come up to Penn State and uh,
• 32:59
Speaker 6: we we were doing the forties and all the other stuff.
• 33:01
Speaker 6: Because now you were doing it on campus back then,
• 33:04
Speaker 6: right and now you can pretty much, you know, do
• 33:07
Speaker 6: it wherever. But so, uh so he he had mentioned
• 33:11
Speaker 6: the fact that you know they're number nine, and then
• 33:15
Speaker 6: he said you're going to be gone before then. Well, okay,
• 33:19
Speaker 6: that's fine, But I still had no idea as to
• 33:21
Speaker 6: where I was going or what was going to happen.
• 33:24
Speaker 6: So knock them up. And I talked to him in
• 33:27
Speaker 6: his wife and he was the coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
• 33:31
Speaker 6: And then one thing kind of let or another, and
• 33:34
Speaker 6: I didn't really know what the situation was probably until
• 33:38
Speaker 6: maybe a day before uh the actual draft, where I'd
• 33:42
Speaker 6: gotten a call from my agent, Marvin Demo, and he said, hey,
• 33:47
Speaker 6: I need you to come out to cut up to
• 33:49
Speaker 6: La because you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna be headed
• 33:53
Speaker 6: north up to Seattle. I'm like, Okay, that works for me, Okay,
• 33:58
Speaker 6: was it? Uh So that's kind of how I knew
• 34:01
Speaker 6: about it, and that's that's kind of what happened on
• 34:03
Speaker 6: my end. But yeah, I knew l Way was gonna
• 34:07
Speaker 6: go number one, and I knew Eric Differson was gonna
• 34:12
Speaker 6: go number two, and then I was gonna go number.
• 34:15
  Speaker 5: And again.
• 34:16
Speaker 4: Man, that's that's huge, and that's behind you know, Eric Dickerson,
• 34:21
Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, and and and and to me.
• 34:26
Speaker 4: And when I and again, I can I go back
• 34:28
Speaker 4: to I go back to the game and us laying
• 34:31
Speaker 4: on the on the turf laughing because I'm laying on
• 34:35
Speaker 4: top of you, and all of a sudden there's two
• 34:39
Speaker 4: West Virginia guys from the North South game who are buddies,
• 34:42
Speaker 4: who are laying on the turf, just absolutely like laughing
• 34:46
Speaker 4: because we can't we you know, it's just unbelievable that
• 34:49
Speaker 4: this is actually happening. I can remember that. I can
• 34:52
Speaker 4: I can remember that playing as day man, and I may.
• 34:55
Speaker 6: Have said a few other words, well, I would.
• 35:00
Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna try to take some credit like
• 35:01
Speaker 4: I did tackle you, so you know, so tell me
• 35:15
Speaker 4: a little bit more accurt about like, Okay, so when
• 35:18
Speaker 4: you go when you're the first pick to a team,
• 35:22
Speaker 4: and you go to this team, and obviously me like you,
• 35:27
Speaker 4: like anybody who's coming, everybody wants to play, everybody wants
• 35:31
Speaker 4: to start. Yeah, I remember going in and checking, you know,
• 35:36
Speaker 4: looking at at my position. I'm moving from safety to corner.
• 35:39
Speaker 4: So I'm now I'm checking out the corners. I'm kind
• 35:41
Speaker 4: of looking to see, Okay, who can I go after?
• 35:44
Speaker 4: Do you remember your process of trying to figure out
• 35:48
Speaker 4: like who you had to get past?
• 35:51
Speaker 5: How did you think that you were going to get him?
• 35:54
Speaker 6: Or you just on the top of the When I
• 35:55
Speaker 6: walked in there, I was on the top of the board.
• 35:57
Speaker 5: There you go, what's just a bottom?
• 36:00
Speaker 6: I was at the top, and they're like, let's see
• 36:03
Speaker 6: what you can do.
• 36:04
Speaker 4: So so they put you, they put you in the
• 36:07
  Speaker 4: eye right now.
• 36:09
Speaker 6: Let me tell you something. You're the number one guy.
• 36:12
Speaker 6: You've got all the other stuff that there's no hiding you.
• 36:16
Speaker 6: You can't hide. You gotta play. So what are you
• 36:20
Speaker 6: gonna do? You're gonna play. You're gonna play. What what's
• 36:23
Speaker 6: going on here? Well, you know what, you gotta bring it.
• 36:27
Speaker 6: I can't hide. I an say I can hide, you know,
• 36:30
Speaker 6: back in the weeds in the wood.
• 36:34
Speaker 5: But you got to get there. You gotta go.
• 36:37
Speaker 6: It's exposed. And I'm like, oh man, so you know,
• 36:42
Speaker 6: and you gotta show up. Because you don't show up,
• 36:46
Speaker 6: they got no use for you. You gotta go. Yeah,
• 36:49
Speaker 6: you don't want to bus So so that was that.
• 36:52
Speaker 6: That's that's what I did not want to be, was
• 36:55
Speaker 6: a bust bring it. I had the right guy had
• 37:00
Speaker 6: ground Chuck, and you know what he said to me was, hey,
• 37:04
Speaker 6: the ball ain't heavy. The ball ain't heavy. I'm not
• 37:09
Speaker 6: having the ball not heavy?
• 37:12
  Speaker 5: When the daylight.
• 37:13
Speaker 6: That was the second thing he said, run the daylight
• 37:15
Speaker 6: and run with he ain't so.
• 37:19
  Speaker 4: Like.
• 37:19
Speaker 6: That was my instruction from Chuck knock and I just
• 37:22
Speaker 6: s I still remember it heavy. You're gonna be running
• 37:29
Speaker 6: that football. She's a ball right here. It ain't heavy.
• 37:33
  Speaker 6: Let's go.
• 37:34
  Speaker 9: Love that phrase.
• 37:36
Speaker 6: That's what he did. He had a lot of phrase
• 37:38
Speaker 6: they called them. Go not today, not today.
• 37:44
Speaker 4: That's awesome And I think that what that does is
• 37:47
Speaker 4: sort of display the attitude that you had coming in
• 37:49
Speaker 4: at you know, particularly at various levels, because you had
• 37:52
Speaker 4: to take on one sort of role coming into Penn State.
• 37:55
Speaker 4: Then when you go to the NFL, it's it's another
• 37:57
Speaker 4: as far as being on the top of the list.
• 37:59
Speaker 4: So what I want to ask is, like a lot
• 38:02
Speaker 4: of times when you have guys and athletes coming from
• 38:05
Speaker 4: small towns and going to you know, bigger, bigger cities,
• 38:08
Speaker 4: and then obviously being on the top of your field
• 38:11
Speaker 4: of endeavor, which was football, a lot of them subscribe
• 38:14
Speaker 4: to a lot of the trappings that are around.
• 38:18
Speaker 5: Particularly being the number one, you know, p of a team.
• 38:21
Speaker 4: So how did you avoid that during particularly that mid
• 38:24
Speaker 4: eighties when you know kind of we all know what
• 38:26
Speaker 4: was going on at that time.
• 38:29
Speaker 6: You know what it wasn't I think it's just your upbringing,
• 38:34
Speaker 6: your friends, your family and the values that they instilled
• 38:41
Speaker 6: in you. You don't. I didn't very too much off
• 38:47
Speaker 6: of that, so I was able to kind of keep
• 38:49
Speaker 6: the focus on what I needed to do. As far
• 38:54
Speaker 6: as as far as I was concerned, I was well
• 38:57
Speaker 6: ahead of the game. I wasn't in the coal mines
• 38:59
Speaker 6: of That's Virginia, remember that, right, right, and was a
• 39:05
Speaker 6: great experience, so I would what I got no complaint.
• 39:10
Speaker 6: I'm okay. So now you've got to go out here
• 39:13
Speaker 6: and and and uh and play at another level, which
• 39:18
Speaker 6: is Carl, you know that the NFL level that that
• 39:21
Speaker 6: that is the whole different level within itself. You can't
• 39:25
Speaker 6: you can't duplicate that. You can't go out and practice
• 39:28
Speaker 6: that these are the best of the best. You can't
• 39:31
Speaker 6: fake it. You can't fake no new dude.
• 39:36
Speaker 4: And and and to that at all, and to that, Kurt,
• 39:40
Speaker 4: there has to be you have to have not I'm
• 39:43
Speaker 4: not gonna say it can't be an arrogance, because arrogance
• 39:46
Speaker 4: can can cost you. But you've got to have the
• 39:49
Speaker 4: confidence to know one, I've done everything I can do
• 39:53
  Speaker 4: working out.
• 39:54
Speaker 5: You know, I'm gonna work as.
• 39:55
Speaker 4: Hard as I possibly can. I'm all out work anybody
• 39:58
Speaker 4: that's in the position that I'm those when when when
• 40:02
Speaker 4: you get people who focus on a dream, something that
• 40:08
Speaker 4: they want and you don't, you don't veer off of that,
• 40:11
Speaker 4: and you're not gonna let.
• 40:12
Speaker 5: Anybody take you from that. I didn't care who was
• 40:16
  Speaker 5: playing corner.
• 40:17
Speaker 4: I just wanted to know which one was gonna be
• 40:19
Speaker 4: the first one I could get, you know, and as
• 40:22
Speaker 4: soon as I walked in, I'm trying.
• 40:24
  Speaker 5: I'm trying to get you. I'm sorry, I don't know,
• 40:25
  Speaker 5: I don't really know you. I'm sure we'll get to
• 40:29
  Speaker 5: know each other.
• 40:29
Speaker 4: But but you and my spot and and and as
• 40:33
Speaker 4: arrogant as that sounds, you're not gonna make it, and
• 40:37
Speaker 4: you're not gonna make it at that point.
• 40:39
Speaker 5: If you're not thinking.
• 40:40
Speaker 6: That way, I would call it a quiet confidence. You
• 40:44
Speaker 6: don't go out and talking, you know, you do it,
• 40:47
Speaker 6: you execute it because I don't want to hear you talking.
• 40:51
Speaker 6: Do something, just be quiet and play. And that is
• 40:55
  Speaker 6: the mindset. That was my mindset. I don't I don't
• 40:58
Speaker 6: need to talk. We'll speak, you know, for itself. And
• 41:03
Speaker 6: that that's that was my mindset. Uh, that was my
• 41:07
Speaker 6: attitude with regards to playing in the NFL, because I mean,
• 41:12
Speaker 6: you got guy, you got guys that are like Lawrence Taylor.
• 41:14
Speaker 6: I mean that guy was. Youre talking about men, the
• 41:19
Speaker 6: men amongst the men. That guy was. He was crazy.
• 41:23
Speaker 6: He was crazy. He was the craziest guy I've ever seen,
• 41:26
Speaker 6: and I mean good crazy. He could play, he could
• 41:28
Speaker 6: scare your you know, he's like the guy you don't
• 41:30
Speaker 6: want to mess around with him. Uh, let's run to
• 41:32
  Speaker 6: the other side. Let's let's let's not let's not run
• 41:34
  Speaker 6: at this guy.
• 41:35
Speaker 4: You come in eighty three, when we came in in
• 41:37
Speaker 4: eighty three. But there were some dogs in the league.
• 41:40
Speaker 6: Oh, there were some crazy people out there. They were
• 41:44
Speaker 6: all crazy. You gotta get crazy right along with them.
• 41:47
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 41:49
Speaker 6: I don't know why you do it. You you got
• 41:52
Speaker 6: to about the third or fourth quarter you just say, Okay,
• 41:54
Speaker 6: you know what, I don't care anymore. I just don't care.
• 41:56
  Speaker 6: Let's just play.
• 41:58
Speaker 8: So yeah, yeah, Hey, Kurt, So I'm going to talk
• 42:02
Speaker 8: a little bit about a career changing moment, probably probably
• 42:04
Speaker 8: not one of your fondest memories of your NFL experiences,
• 42:07
Speaker 8: but Week one of nineteen eighty four when you injured
• 42:10
Speaker 8: your right ACL and you missed the rest of this season.
• 42:15
Speaker 8: We've talked on here. I know Carl's had some of
• 42:17
Speaker 8: his former teammates from the Vikings talk about their own injury,
• 42:21
Speaker 8: you know, detrimental injury experiences with the team doctors, and
• 42:26
Speaker 8: how was that for you whenever you found out that
• 42:29
Speaker 8: your ACL was injured, and it was you know, it
• 42:31
Speaker 8: could be a career changing type of injury. How did
• 42:34
Speaker 8: the Seahawks handle that injury with you and how did
• 42:36
Speaker 8: you overcome all that controversy.
• 42:41
Speaker 6: Doctor Scranton, who was our orthopedic surgeon, I specifically him
• 42:49
Speaker 6: remember him coming into my to the hospital room bed
• 42:53
Speaker 6: saying after the surgery, he says, I have fixed your
• 42:57
Speaker 6: knee accordingly. Now it's up to you to do something
• 43:02
Speaker 6: about it. Right, And because I had no idea, you
• 43:06
Speaker 6: know just how how significant that was with regards to
• 43:12
  Speaker 6: the injury. You know, I didn't think that I wasn't
• 43:15
Speaker 6: ever going to play again. I figured, hey, it's another
• 43:18
Speaker 6: obstacle you got to overcome. But he did fix my
• 43:22
Speaker 6: knee accordingly, and I didn't have any issues with it.
• 43:26
Speaker 6: So it's just a manner of you know, getting you know,
• 43:30
Speaker 6: nine months of rehab right, pretty much every day, eight
• 43:34
Speaker 6: hours a day of rehab. I mean not literally, that's
• 43:37
Speaker 6: how much time I spent to get back, you know,
• 43:41
Speaker 6: on track. And I and my knee was healthy. It
• 43:44
Speaker 6: wasn't you know, it was it was stable.
• 43:47
  Speaker 9: It was.
• 43:50
Speaker 6: It wasn't like, Okay, I'm running and all of a
• 43:52
Speaker 6: sudden I can't run or it pops or it clicks
• 43:54
Speaker 6: or something like that. I didn't have that that that issue. Well,
• 43:58
Speaker 6: I you know, I fortunately enough to have a great
• 44:01
Speaker 6: doctor who actually mean he went in and did what
• 44:04
Speaker 6: he said he was going to do. Uh and uh,
• 44:08
Speaker 6: you know, I had to, you know, work at it
• 44:11
Speaker 6: quite a bit for a long time. And I appreciate
• 44:13
Speaker 6: our trainers because they did a great job as well.
• 44:16
Speaker 6: And then I wore a knee brace for my first
• 44:19
Speaker 6: year or so, and then it broke and fell apart
• 44:25
Speaker 6: my second year or so, and I just I didn't
• 44:29
Speaker 6: even put it back on. I said, I'm done. I
• 44:31
  Speaker 6: don't need it's.
• 44:33
Speaker 8: An amazing and that was an amazing you know, overcoming
• 44:36
Speaker 8: that that that's pretty pretty special.
• 44:39
Speaker 4: And I'm shocked, I guess I'm shocked that you you
• 44:41
Speaker 4: would take that brace off.
• 44:45
Speaker 6: I broke it. It broke, and and I'm like, what
• 44:48
  Speaker 6: they don't break And I don't, you know, I'm talking
• 44:54
Speaker 6: about the breaks. I don't talking about people. I'm just
• 44:56
Speaker 6: I just don't like that bake on my knee. And
• 44:59
Speaker 6: then it broke and I I went to the sidelines
• 45:01
Speaker 6: and I just said, you know what, I'm done. I'm
• 45:04
Speaker 6: not I'm not wearing a stick. And then two plays
• 45:06
Speaker 6: later I got hit I got hit on the knee.
• 45:09
Speaker 6: I got hit, and then I got up and.
• 45:12
Speaker 5: I was like, oh, now it's okay, it's okay.
• 45:15
Speaker 6: You know what, Now it's okay. And then I proceeded
• 45:19
Speaker 6: to just go after it from that time all so
• 45:21
Speaker 6: it was a little you know, there's there's somehow it
• 45:27
Speaker 6: just clicked. It was like, okay, I got ninety nine
• 45:31
Speaker 6: point five and then all of a sudden, the brace
• 45:33
Speaker 6: went away and then I got hit, and it's like, okay,
• 45:35
Speaker 6: just I think about it. I just started playing again
• 45:38
  Speaker 6: right now.
• 45:39
Speaker 4: Not only because we talked. Coachly talked about you guys
• 45:42
Speaker 4: playing in the North South Game together during high school,
• 45:45
Speaker 4: but I also believe you guys played in the Pro
• 45:47
Speaker 4: Bowl together. Yes, in my correct eighty seven. Yes, Now,
• 45:52
Speaker 4: how was that kind of reconnecting? You know, playing in
• 45:55
Speaker 4: the All Star game in high school? Now you know
• 45:57
Speaker 4: you meet each other back in the league.
• 46:00
Speaker 6: You know, did I play that year? I don't know
• 46:04
  Speaker 6: if I played.
• 46:05
Speaker 4: You know what now that I think, yeah, you were selected,
• 46:08
  Speaker 4: but I don't I don't think that you don't think
• 46:10
  Speaker 4: that you play.
• 46:11
Speaker 5: I don't think that you didn't show up.
• 46:13
Speaker 6: I said, you know what, my my knee still hurts
• 46:16
  Speaker 6: and I'm not gonna play. No, I wasn't. I didn't
• 46:23
Speaker 6: want to play person.
• 46:31
  Speaker 4: I just know.
• 46:34
Speaker 6: I just like you know what, I don't want to play.
• 46:36
Speaker 6: Uh because Carl, if you know that game over there,
• 46:40
Speaker 6: they didn't really do anything until maybe the fourth quarter,
• 46:44
Speaker 6: where when you start kicking in who's gonna get paid?
• 46:46
Speaker 6: What the first couple of quarters, I mean we we
• 46:50
Speaker 6: were taking it easy on each other because you don't
• 46:53
Speaker 6: want to see anybody get hurt. And uh so.
• 46:57
Speaker 4: When you look at it to pretty interesting when you
• 46:59
Speaker 4: look at it today, what does it even look like
• 47:01
Speaker 4: to you today? Because it's not even a game anymore.
• 47:05
  Speaker 4: Like that's just why that's.
• 47:07
Speaker 6: You know what I say, You know what I say.
• 47:09
Speaker 6: I'm like, why why you're not doing anything? So you
• 47:14
Speaker 6: know they're playing playing.
• 47:15
Speaker 4: Football now with exactly and you know what, you know
• 47:19
Speaker 4: what bothers me? And I'm curious about how you how
• 47:22
Speaker 4: what you think about this? And Hollis and Lisa, you
• 47:24
Speaker 4: you all can chime in real quick too, like why
• 47:29
Speaker 4: even so, why don't you just have like, you know,
• 47:33
Speaker 4: an all pro team, all this whatever whatever you want
• 47:36
Speaker 4: to call it, and just erase all of the games
• 47:40
Speaker 4: and just let it be like like all State, all conference.
• 47:43
Speaker 5: Why not just make it that and then and don't
• 47:46
Speaker 5: put no game with its no game, no more.
• 47:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean don't even do don't do nothing.
• 47:53
Speaker 5: Just just give you the honor and move on and
• 47:57
Speaker 5: move on. I mean they got to feel the gap
• 47:59
Speaker 5: between the playoffs and no, they got to make money. Well,
• 48:04
Speaker 5: they're gonna make money. You gotta feel that weekend. And
• 48:06
Speaker 5: you know, so what don't.
• 48:08
Speaker 6: They Why don't they blame Well, you couldn't because he
• 48:10
Speaker 6: couldn't bring college kids in there and let them play
• 48:13
Speaker 6: and do it that way. Because I don't I think
• 48:15
  Speaker 6: they're in the it's isn't it during that? Uh? Isn't
• 48:20
Speaker 6: it during the bowl games? Which these kids don't play
• 48:22
Speaker 6: any longer in the bowl games anyway?
• 48:23
Speaker 4: Right the national championship, the championship, I think, right like
• 48:29
  Speaker 4: right after.
• 48:30
  Speaker 6: But okay, so yeah, I don't I don't know why.
• 48:33
Speaker 6: It's like, why play in it? Because it's just the
• 48:40
Speaker 6: gal you to a certain degree. And I don't blame
• 48:42
Speaker 6: the guys for not playing. It's you know, it's like, hey,
• 48:44
Speaker 6: I don't want to go there and get hurt and
• 48:46
Speaker 6: then all of a sudden you're done and you don't
• 48:49
Speaker 6: you don't want to career any injury out there playing
• 48:52
Speaker 6: that area because you're not really focused on it. It's
• 48:55
Speaker 6: not a game game. You're just kind of going through
• 48:58
Speaker 6: the motions, which I hate say, but you know you're
• 49:01
Speaker 6: trying to protect your yourself and others as well as you.
• 49:06
Speaker 9: Should, right, I mean as you should?
• 49:08
  Speaker 6: Yeah?
• 49:08
Speaker 9: Yeah, all right, So I have one more question.
• 49:10
Speaker 8: I'm going back to your Nitney Lion days and I'm
• 49:13
Speaker 8: going to kind of throw in a little Mountaineer Nitney
• 49:16
Speaker 8: Lion rivalry discussion here. So I think you've been you
• 49:20
Speaker 8: were a part of that, correct, some of the games
• 49:22
Speaker 8: that were played between WU and Penn State, and so
• 49:26
Speaker 8: out of the sixties sixty previous meetings, I think the
• 49:29
Speaker 8: Nitney Lions led the series forty nine to nine and two.
• 49:33
Speaker 8: So what are your thoughts on do you feel like
• 49:35
Speaker 8: the WVU Penn State rivalry over the years?
• 49:38
Speaker 9: Was it really truly a robbery?
• 49:40
Speaker 8: I know some of the arguments are when there's a
• 49:42
Speaker 8: rivalry that it's not as lopsided with wins and losses.
• 49:46
Speaker 9: How does Penn State.
• 49:47
Speaker 8: Look or view the WVU rivalry Do they feel like
• 49:51
  Speaker 8: it's a rivalry?
• 49:53
Speaker 9: Yes, okay we did okay, without it out, Okay.
• 49:55
Speaker 6: Got it out. We put that game very seriously. And
• 49:59
Speaker 6: if you don't take it seriously, you're good. That's when
• 50:01
Speaker 6: you're gonna get beat. It didn't matter to us what
• 50:05
Speaker 6: the record was there was want to oh, we weren't gonna,
• 50:09
Speaker 6: you know, let up on them because we had won
• 50:12
Speaker 6: who knows how many more games than so nothing, but
• 50:17
Speaker 6: we were able to focus in on what we needed
• 50:19
Speaker 6: to do that week and knowingly that West Virginia you know,
• 50:23
Speaker 6: could beat us at any given time, you can lose,
• 50:26
Speaker 6: so we uh, we took it very seriously for gun concerts.
• 50:31
Speaker 5: Well, anybody got anything anything else?
• 50:34
Speaker 4: Kurt uh Hollis, Yeah, just again you you were tired

• 51:24
Speaker 4: gonna have a problem.
• 51:27

Speaker 4: reflect back on how you ran, and maybe you didn't,
