- 0:25Welcome Inside the Treehouse Football Podcast number seventeen seventeen. It's wild Card week as
- 0:34we lead into wild Card weekend. Coming off the final week of this of
- 0:39the regular season, the Cowboys handled the Commanders of Washington thirty eight to I
- 0:49forgot like ten or something, Dury. That's how at a certain point disinterested
- 0:53I became in the game just because you know, by the fourth quarter it
- 0:57had been long over and really, other than Stefan Gilmour being injured, the
- 1:02worst thing that happened in that game for the Cowboys was Brandon Aubrey finally missing
- 1:04a kick. Yeah. I don't think I have ever been more disappointed to
- 1:11see a kick blocked than I was with that. I was like, oh,
- 1:14damn he So I was curious about that. To me, that shouldn't
- 1:18count against him because the one after that that he doinked off the upright,
- 1:23Yes, that's a miss. To me, it shouldn't count as a miss
- 1:27when someone else blocks your kick. I think they I think they corrected it.
- 1:32I think they said it wasn't a miss because it was blocked good,
- 1:36so it wasn't his. That one was not his fault, so right,
- 1:38So technically the only one he's actually missed the season was the one he doinked
- 1:42off the upright. Yeah. On the flip side of that, though,
- 1:47Tara and I had the same reaction to that doink that was, you know
- 1:52what, good, get it out of your system now. So it's happened,
- 1:56and you don't feel any sort of mounting pressure if it comes down to
- 1:59a to a field goal in the playoffs somewhere, okay, So then this
- 2:02doesn't so okay, So that theory doesn't apply. Like I always look at
- 2:07it like golf, like when you get the shanks, Like the first time
- 2:09it happens, you're like, oh my god, am I gonna am I
- 2:13gonna miss am I gonna shake it left again or shake it right again?
- 2:15And you go up to the next hole and you do, and now you
- 2:17have So is this because I don't think he kicked out. He made one
- 2:22after that, that is, yeah, he made one after that, And
- 2:24I was like, okay, so he's back. So I was I was
- 2:28worried. I was like, is this like the the end of of his
- 2:30his reign? This is what the cowboys do? Like Nick Folk couldn't be
- 2:36touched, Like he was amazing, And then he missed one, and Jerry's
- 2:38like, uh, you might want to go see the Jets. Well,
- 2:43who was was it last year or two years ago where we got the kicker
- 2:46that got the yips? It's it's was it kay Forbath that got it?
- 2:52Or was it Brett Maher? Yes, I got the yips? Yeah,
- 2:55yeah, the yips, whatever you want to call it. But that was
- 3:00back when that wasn't the Cowboys biggest problem, although it was a huge problem.
- 3:07But before we get fully on into Cowboys commanders and looking into the wild
- 3:15card weekend ahead, how does everyone feel about the college football playoff this year?
- 3:21Because me, I'm I'm a little disappointed to be thirty four to thirteen
- 3:24final game. It wasn't nearly as entertaining as I was hoping. And I
- 3:29don't know, it was just kind of you know, they had their own
- 3:32storyline, if you you know, I think it was at least because we're
- 3:36down here in Texas and you're in Oklahoma, and so I think it's more
- 3:42you know, it was hyped up a little more up north in the north
- 3:45in the Northwest, because you had the Harbass story with him being suspended games,
- 3:50and you know, the interim coach and then he's back, and then
- 3:53something happens with the and then twenty six years they haven't had a national championship,
- 3:55and so I think there was more build up there. So, like
- 3:59I have buddy of mind losing Detroit, he was crazy hyped for this game,
- 4:02like he's like, you know, we had something to talk about.
- 4:04He's like, I gotta go. I'm watching the game. So if you
- 4:06don't hear from me tonight, that's why. And I was like, oh,
- 4:09yeah, that's on. Yeah. I don't have a college I don't
- 4:12have a college football team. I don't have a college team that I root
- 4:15for. I just I like to tune in and just see a good game.
- 4:18And obviously we didn't get that. But I mean the Texas Washington game
- 4:23before it was really really good. Yeah yeah, that's how sick I was.
- 4:29I didn't I didn't even watch it. Oh yeah, the flu the
- 4:30bottom, that's right, I you know I I I still think that that
- 4:38and it's it's funny. Michigan won. My problem with Michigan and the whole
- 4:42thing is I suspect two years from now NCAA is going to completely vacate their
- 4:47wins this season. And this was then then they're gonna go back. Well,
- 4:53you should put Georgia in there and see what happened. Why why would
- 4:57they vacate the when does that she thing? Oh? Gotcha? Okay,
- 5:00from the beginning of the see that that supposed cheating, a leged cheating at
- 5:04the beginning of the season. I don't even think we. I mean,
- 5:06the reason why he agreed to the suspension with the Big ten is the proof
- 5:12is just too much. The coach, I mean, the guy he sent
- 5:15to other people's practices admitted it. Yeah, I mean, and there's paper
- 5:19receipts of travel and other stuff. Yeah. And also like pretty bad he
- 5:24that that coach folded like a freshman. Yeah. And also like just to
- 5:29get the security clearance. There's somebody involved in that too that they're trying to
- 5:32They can't find that person, right, it's not what the whole thing is,
- 5:35Like the lynchpin on. That is how he got onto the field for
- 5:39all those different in their gear, like he was worrying, like if it
- 5:43was Michigan State. He had a state had on and he had the lanyard
- 5:45and everything, and he's just in the corner. So there's some there's some
- 5:48security breach that they were trying to figure out. So yeah, you know,
- 5:50I wouldn't doubt that. Okay, on from a moral standpoint, an
- 5:54ethical standpoint, that's terrible, But from a stupid standpoint, which we deal
- 6:00with deeply here in the treehouse, that's hysterical. Is anybody gonna noticed that
- 6:06this guy who's wearing the same you know, clothes as I am. Is
- 6:12it gonna be like, hey, who is that guy? They'd be like
- 6:14high five because yeah, he's also wearing the same colors. Yeah, I
- 6:16mean, but still, like I've like when my family had the staffing nurses
- 6:20and hospitals, when we have the staffing company, like I would have to
- 6:24go like deliver stuff to the director of nursing or whatever, and so I
- 6:27would just wear a polo and buttoned out. And I can't tell you how
- 6:30many times I got in the elevator and people are like doctor, and I
- 6:31was like, okay, I just gonna stood there like I hope to God
- 6:34this elevator doesn't open and there's an emergency. Because so I kind of understand
- 6:42that when people are looking around, because if you look like you're supposed to
- 6:45be there, that's what If you look like, there's nothing wrong, there's
- 6:47nothing sneaky, there's nothing suspicious going on. I deserve to be here.
- 6:50People go, did we hire a new guy? And so we go probably
- 6:54and anyway, watch the game or watch practice, like that's what. Yeah,
- 6:58And then what's you're bizarre about the story. And I think this will
- 7:01all come out is their dad, Jack Harbaugh was accused of this basically the
- 7:05same thing. Yeah, that's exactly right. Yeah, yeah, so it's
- 7:10it's I think it'll be a figure and that's it will surprise me if Harbor,
- 7:15you know, in the next couple of days, is all of a
- 7:15sudden announced as an NFL head coach and yeah, that's right. He still
- 7:20pulls and he pulls a Pete Carroll. Hey, Pete Carroll. Yeah,
- 7:24that's well. And the NFL, you know, there was one coach,
- 7:28Oh, it was a there was one coach. Basically they kind of penalized
- 7:31and said, no, you're not going to do the Pete Carroll. Uh
- 7:34So no one's quite sure if what the NFL will do with that. But
- 7:38I know, I think Michigan said they say, he's got an offer on
- 7:41the table for one hundred and twenty five million, but he has to agree
- 7:45that he can't even talk to an NFL team for like the next two years.
- 7:47Oh wow, Okay, it's a good tactic. Yeah, it's not
- 7:51just money to coach the team, but it's money so you don't leave.
- 7:56Yeah. And if you want to know how cheating works out and how karma's
- 7:59a bit, ask Belichick how he feels this season. Well, I mean
- 8:07super bowls. I mean, I think he still came out ahead on that
- 8:11situation. Yeah, I mean, but but still like he he had that.
- 8:16I mean, he just every season like, well, they know they're
- 8:20going to the playoffs and they might go to the super Bowl. And this
- 8:22year was like, well they got to fire him. I was like,
- 8:24well that was quick. That was really fast to move on. Six six
- 8:31rings. He sucks. I'm like wow. And it's funny because at the
- 8:35beginning of this NFL season on this football podcast, we were saying, you
- 8:39know what with as mini trophies as he lined uh Bobcraft's pants with despite the
- 8:46despite the crowded area, you would think that he could be he could have
- 8:52the job for as long as he wanted it. But I guess eventually it
- 8:56just they didn't end in the happy, ending that he wanted. I couldn't
- 9:03help it. I had to. You're listening to the Treehouse. Visit us

- 9:50as we roll into wildcard weekend to recap, the Cowboys handled the Commanders,
- 9:58uh, the Eagles faltered mightily against the Giants, and therefore we end
- 10:07up the Cowboys as the number two seed in the playoffs a home game.
- 10:15I just forgot who they're playing, Jesus Christ, Pat Green Bay Packers,
- 10:18Thank you. See I'm still I'm sick, so my brain's not all there.
- 10:22Hey, before we get into the playoff, I have one question I
- 10:24want to ask going back to the Brandon Aubrey field goal. Okay, did
- 10:28y'all not watch that and go? Man, his line must hate him because
- 10:33they basically let that guy just in untouched to block that kick. That's why
- 10:37we were talking about should that count as a block you know, a miss?
- 10:41No? If it was low and like the guy in the second rogue
- 10:43touched it, Yeah, that's the kicker's fault. That was the line just
- 10:48going yeah, record f you olay, I mean it does. It really
- 10:54does make you wonder when when a player is missed to that degree, it
- 11:01is kind of stunning. And I'll give you another. I'll give you a
- 11:03really good example, as I think I mentioned this to you guys the week
- 11:07before. UH. In the week UH in the game the week before,
- 11:11you had to play in the end zone where Dak is going back. It's
- 11:16it was on the ninety something yard touchdown to CD. Dak falls back into
- 11:18UH as a fallback, but he drops back and the blitzing linebacker from the
- 11:24Lions barely nudges him with his with his elbow like he gives him like a
- 11:28quick chicken dance bump and goes right by Dak and Dak just chunks it too.
- 11:33Seeing boom with's a touchdown that play. I was wondering, Okay,
- 11:39there's got to be something weird going on, because I don't understand how an
- 11:43NFL linebacker could miss somebody that badly. Same thing with O laying the defensive
- 11:48lineman on that kick, right, Yeah, I mean I he blocked it
- 11:52with his torso, I mean had had aurey just waited a mill second he
- 12:00would have flown past it and he probably would have made it. Yeah if
- 12:05he just halted, yeah dead kicked yeah yeah, he might have gone between
- 12:07his legs and still through the uprights. Yeah. That's when you have a
- 12:09linement like who's whose car is this in my parking spot? That's that's Brandon's.
- 12:16It's like, oh okay, I got you, buddy. And that
- 12:18is one of those things I do wonder for for Brandon Aubrey and even for
- 12:22you know, the holder. I believe it's brand ager. Is is when
- 12:28you see someone come through the line that untouched. That's whereas you the holder,
- 12:33like, well, he ain't making this is you just pick it up
- 12:33in sky or fire fire and you roll out and do something with it because
- 12:37he's obviously not gonna make this kick because this guy's going to eat it.
- 12:41Yeah. I also look at it like if it were me, like and
- 12:43I see like a guy twice my size running at me, I would just
- 12:48yell I'm the kicker, Like that's all I would do, Like you just
- 12:52shrieked like a woman and fall down, I'm the kicker and faint. That
- 12:58would that would be it. That would actually be a very cowboys thing to
- 13:03do is to actually sign a fainting kicker. He it's nervous and yeah,
- 13:13but he screams first, like the goats, the Tennessee scarecoat. So ultimately,
- 13:24Trey, I don't know. I don't know if anyone has asked that
- 13:26question the over the this week about that, but real quick, this has
- 13:33bothered me, you know, for probably twenty plus years. The piss poor
- 13:41blocking ability of some NFL players is astounding. One of the first things you
- 13:46were taught when you're playing football, when you're a blocker, especially, is
- 13:50get your hands inside. Every single edge blocker in the NFL the first thing
- 13:56they do is hands go to the outside of the immediately grab their shoulder pads.
- 13:58That that's why they can call holding on every steak and play in the
- 14:01NFL, because these guys, My theory is that because they were so good
- 14:05when they were young, they didn't have to learn the actual basic one oh
- 14:09one techniques. Even though they get taught NFL techniques. Once they get the
- 14:15NFL, hands inside doesn't seem like something that gets pounded into their brains once
- 14:20they make it to an NFL facility. The offensive lineman, that's kind of
- 14:22a different thing. But even they do it. Sometimes it's just undisciplined,
- 14:26you know, dip shittery am, I am, I wrong tray, it's
- 14:31hands inside and what do they do? I think dip shitty is uh an
- 14:37absolute you know. Yeah, excellent analysis of that. And I also na
- 14:43an ice cream store. Ever, it's the same take that, Pat McAfee.
- 14:54It's like the principle of if you have the football, you should have
- 14:58it on your outside arm yep, closest to the sideline. Yes, yeah,
- 15:03they don't like you so seldom see. I mean one of them at
- 15:07Smith's great qualities is he was so good with the football and you could watch
- 15:09him, I mean old school, you know, tucking the ball, like
- 15:13moving his hands and moving sides you don't like now it's like that's why he
- 15:18And sometimes it amazes me you don't see more fumbles because they don't protect the
- 15:22ball, but their hands are so damn big. I guess they can.
- 15:24Yeah. Also even in fundamentals, when it's like when you're tackling somebody who
- 15:28wrap them up like this whole, like let me just let me hit you
- 15:31with my body and hope you fall. I see that all the time on
- 15:35every NFL team. You know, you know what that reminds me of when
- 15:37I see that poor tackleau which by the way, is to be the reason
- 15:41why that the Cowboys had their skid that they had in December is because in
- 15:46large part their tackle was atrocious. It reminded me of the guy who is
- 15:52being sentenced to prison and he leaps at the judge. I mean, he
- 16:00kind of got to her, but he didn't wrap up. He just he
- 16:04just leaps into her general vicinity and hopes that something happens. That's kind of
- 16:08what a lot of NFL tackling looks like. And I just can't believe,
- 16:11Like, coaches, don't go can we just take a second to show some
- 16:14film real quick? What what? What was the logic behind this? Like?
- 16:17What were you? What were you? I was just hoping he would
- 16:19fall. Okay, well that's not how it works. The guy's running,
- 16:25you got to wrap him up and take him down. It's just I can't
- 16:27imagine what the film room must have looked like for the Lions despite the way
- 16:33the game ended, even though it would have I don't want to get into
- 16:36all that. That's a huge mess. But at the end of the at
- 16:37the end of it. The Lions were wrong. They still had two other
- 16:41penalies. I could have been called on him, even think I had reported
- 16:42properly. Was that linebacker that doesn't get the sack on Doc? I can't
- 16:48imagine what Dan Cambill must have said to him watching that film. I mean,
- 16:52I would think that guy may not even like he may be missing.
- 16:57Well, it is Detroit. They might have just gave him a glass of
- 17:00water and called it at night. Uh so, just left the door open
- 17:04and put a blindfold on him. Yeah, uh yeah. So, but
- 17:12I unimpressed with the Commander's game. I mean it was it was a good
- 17:17victory, but it was like at the end, I was by the time
- 17:19I was you said the fourth it was done like by the time for me,
- 17:22like end of the second quarter, beginning of the third, I was
- 17:26like, oh, this is a wrap. We can start getting dinner ready.
- 17:29It was fun to hear the difference in the cadence between you know,
- 17:33Dak's here we go and uh, because Dak is very guttural. Yeah,
- 17:45you know, he's like, here we go. Yeah, and then and
- 17:49then I'm sorry I have brain farted on and same. I know it's damn
- 17:52name I'm sick and I can't think of it. Oh for Cooper, Cooper
- 18:00Rush. Thank you, Cooper Rush. Yeah, Trey fixes in posts so
- 18:03I don't sound so stupid. Okay, but leave that part. Yeah of
- 18:10a no explanation. Uh So Cooper Rush comes in the game and we get
- 18:14to hear him do the here we Go. Well, obviously Dak sounds like
- 18:17here we go, and it's mainly it's guttural. I don't know. Then
- 18:18Cooper Rush comes in and sounds like the whitest you know, uh a preacher
- 18:23like here we go. It's like, you know what, come up with
- 18:29your own phrase, Cooper, like here we go? And then Cooper rushes
- 18:33like, get in the car, as your seat belts, kids, put
- 18:38your shoes on, listen to the whitest dad move, finish your food like
- 18:48all I'm surprised Cooper Rush's uniform doesn't doesn't include a sleeveless vest. Hop Anyway,
- 19:06the Cowboys handle the Commanders, and on one hand, you could look
- 19:08at it as good momentum going into the playoffs, which you can. Cowboys
- 19:14naysayers can be like, well, yeah, of course it's another bad team
- 19:15that they beat up on, and that's been the slam on the Cowboys for
- 19:19a number of years now. There's even the graphic that I've seen for years.
- 19:22It's a little cycle type thing. It's the beginning of the season.
- 19:25We all have all this hope we're going to make the Super Bowl. Cowboys
- 19:27beat up on bad teams. It's like, oh, this is our year,
- 19:30and then they falter in December or in the playoffs against good teams,
- 19:33and then we start to cycle back over again. But looking back on this
- 19:37season, some of the wins the Cowboys had were actually against quote unquote good
- 19:42teams slash playoff teams. Beat the Lions. I don't care about the controversy.
- 19:48That beat the Lions. They beat the Eagles. That's still a playoff
- 19:52team. I don't care you know how they look going into it. That's
- 19:55still a playoff team. They beat the Rams earlier this year, another playoff
- 20:00team. Yeah, they were neck and neck with the Dolphins. They got
- 20:03blown up, but the Bills. But still, you see my point,
- 20:06like they had some wins against quote unquote good teams. It wasn't all just
- 20:08kicking a crap out of really bad bad ones. Yeah, but it's also
- 20:11the beginning of the season. And they're like, you know, these are
- 20:14really good team, Like like you train, I will talk about this every
- 20:18week. We're like, you know, if they're you know, we're watching
- 20:19Philadelphia, man if they can't step up their game. And when they get
- 20:22to Philly and then Phillies collapsed the last four five four games in a row,
- 20:29six six games in a row, and they just collapsed and you're like,
- 20:32now they're I mean, they were the number one seed and now they're
- 20:34a wild card. So now you're like, you know, going in like
- 20:37you can't tell, you know, midway through the season you can still kind
- 20:41of get an angle on it, but like it's the last it's the last
- 20:44six games that you go, okay, well, then this is carrying them
- 20:47into the the the off you know, the playoffs and into the wildcard like
- 20:51you have to. You can see who's the good team and who's who was
- 20:53good at the beginning, who like had steam at the beginning and didn't have
- 20:56enough steam to finish it off at the end. And now you're wondering as
- 21:00Cowboys fans okay and everyone else is doing this when they're going in seeing their
- 21:03team and who they're going to play and thinking who do I want to play?
- 21:06Who do I don't want to play? So the Cowboys end up with
- 21:08the two seed and a home game. The way all the positioning works out,
- 21:11with wins and losses and records and such, the Cowboys draw the Packers.
- 21:17The Jordan love Packers that without Aaron Rodgers they get into the playoffs.
- 21:23Obviously, there's lots of Cowboys Packers history, Cowboys Packers playoff history, lots
- 21:29of Cowboys getting torched by Aaron Rodgers. It's a young team, it's one
- 21:33of the teams. I was like, I'd rather play them than I would
- 21:37Seattle again. Oh, you rather play them than the Rams again? Yeah,
- 21:42it's incredule what we wish for. You know, Green Bay fans are
- 21:48so big right now on Facebook and Instagram of how they're undefeated at at and
- 21:52T Stadium. No, Aaron Rodgers was undefeated at stadium. Yeah, Like
- 21:59Jordan has come on, played some good games. But I am with you,
- 22:03Dan, of all the possible opponents, I I'll take them over anyone
- 22:07else. Yeah. And I think it was Terry Bradshaw that was like,
- 22:11you know, he he's picking the Packers or he was last week, and
- 22:15he's like you know because of that same thing. Well, you know,
- 22:15they're undefeated at at and T Stadium and then Michael Strand same thing corrects them,
- 22:21goes no, no, no, Aaron Rodgers. That's a big difference.
- 22:26Yeah, it's a huge difference. This is Jordan Love coming into the
- 22:29home field advantage with the hometown boys and that energy that that that comes into
- 22:33that and so that's enough to terrify most teams. So I think it'll be
- 22:37a good game. I think it'll be a I'd like to see how he
- 22:41performs under that kind of pressure. And it's one of the one of the
- 22:44really interesting wild Card weekend storylines. There's like four of them, and one
- 22:49of them is h McCarthy going up against his old team, the Packers.
- 22:56The Packers coming to Dallas, sorry to Arlington, and and can you know,
- 23:00can the Cowboys beat Green Bay? That'd be nice. And then on
- 23:04top of that the other storylines, you've got Tyreek Hills Dolphins going to the
- 23:11Chiefs after they just let him go. Oh yeah. You've also got and
- 23:15this is probably the best storyline of them all this weekend, you've got Jared
- 23:21Goff's Lions going up against Matthew Stafford's Rams and one of the one of the
- 23:27best switcheroos in recent NFL history. So that's a match up outside of the
- 23:33Cowboys game. I'm really excited to watch. That's kind of a who won
- 23:37the trade? Matt Well so far, so far the Rams did because they
- 23:41won a Super Bowl, But Jared Goff may I don't think he still could
- 23:47end up, you know, getting a piece of that pie himself. We'll
- 23:48see, yeah, and then you know, and then Tyreek Hills the whole
- 23:52thing. You know, his house burning down, that's a two point three
- 23:55million dollars out of his pocket. So you know, that's gotta be a
- 23:59little bit of a distraction. I don't know, but that's gonna be an
- 24:02interesting, uh to to see how he's how he's welcomed back to his old
- 24:07old town. That's one of those things. If you're a Chiefs fan,
- 24:10do you try to hit him where it hurts? Like, do you have
- 24:14posters of houses on fire to distract him? Or just his house on fire?
- 24:21If you've got photos of that, absolutely, if you can find a
- 24:23drone to uh show an image onto the field of an actual video of the
- 24:29flames pouring out of Tyreek Hills House. I think that'd be your next level
- 24:33fandom. Everybody should just dress up as firefighters that's at the game and not
- 24:42actually fighting a fire. If ever, if ever there was someone who could
- 24:52say I feel personally attacked, that would be it. That would be it.
- 24:57It's like like like for the calib Boys game, the Cowboys are doing
- 25:00a white out against the Packers. It's all white. They're gonna wear white.
- 25:04That's gonna be all white in the stands, the towels are gonna be
- 25:07out. Kansas City Chiefs need to have firefighter Night and then just play the
- 25:17roof is on Fire on repeat and burning down the house. It's just it's
- 25:30the Tucson Shuffle wild card week and I'm excited. Hopefully the Cowboys do what
- 25:37they're supposed to do and then's get to the next round and then we can
- 25:40all really start chewing on her fingernails about whether or not they can finally get
- 25:42past the divisional round for the first time in like twenty eight years. So
- 25:47we'll see what happens, and we'll be here in the treehouse to discuss it.
- 25:51Either way,
