- Lucas: Hey everyone, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo! I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hi hi! I'm Luna, and I'm ready to learn more Cantonese. Last episode we talked about fruits. We learned apple, banana, orange, and grapes. Lucas: Right. Today, we're going to stay in the food world but move from fruits to vegetables. We'll learn four common vegetables in Cantonese. Luna: Ooh, I love vegetables! Can't wait. Lucas: Let's start with the first one. Cabbage. In Cantonese, cabbage is 椰菜. Say it with me: 椰菜. Luna: 椰菜. Lucas: Good. 椰菜. The tone is low falling then low rising? Actually just say it smoothly. 椰菜. Luna: 椰菜. Lucas: Perfect. Now, carrot. Carrot is 紅蘿蔔. 紅蘿蔔. Luna: 紅蘿蔔. That sounds like 'red radish'? Lucas: Exactly! 紅 means red, 蘿蔔 is radish. So it's 'red radish' for carrot. 紅蘿蔔. Luna: 紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Great. Next, tomato. Tomato is 番茄. 番茄. Luna: 番茄. Lucas: And finally, potato. Potato is 薯仔. 薯仔. Luna: 薯仔. That sounds cute. 'Potato kid'? Lucas: Yeah, 仔 means 'little' or 'son', so 'little potato'. 薯仔. Luna: 薯仔. Lucas: Let's review all four. Cabbage: 椰菜. Carrot: 紅蘿蔔. Tomato: 番茄. Potato: 薯仔. Luna: 椰菜, 紅蘿蔔, 番茄, 薯仔. Lucas: Awesome. Now let's use them in a sentence. We learned 我要 from Episode 20, meaning 'I want'. So if you want cabbage, you say: 我要椰菜. Luna: 我要椰菜. Lucas: Want carrot? 我要紅蘿蔔. Luna: 我要紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Tomato: 我要番茄. Luna: 我要番茄. Lucas: Potato: 我要薯仔. Luna: 我要薯仔. Lucas: You got it. Let's do a little scene. Imagine you're at a market, and you want to buy vegetables. You say to the seller: 我要椰菜 and 我要紅蘿蔔. Luna: 我要椰菜 and 我要紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Then the seller says '好', which means 'okay'. And you can say '唔該' for please or thanks. So: 我要椰菜, 唔該. Luna: 我要椰菜, 唔該. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's practice a few more. I'll say the English, you say the Cantonese. Cabbage. Luna: 椰菜. Lucas: Carrot. Luna: 紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Tomato. Luna: 番茄. Lucas: Potato. Luna: 薯仔. Lucas: Yes! Now let's do the sentences. I want cabbage. Luna: 我要椰菜. Lucas: I want carrot. Luna: 我要紅蘿蔔. Lucas: I want tomato. Luna: 我要番茄. Lucas: I want potato. Luna: 我要薯仔. Lucas: Nailed it. Now let's combine two. Say: I want cabbage and carrot. Luna: Uhh... 我要椰菜 and 紅蘿蔔? Lucas: Exactly. But in Cantonese, we can just say: 我要椰菜同紅蘿蔔. '同' means 'and'. So: 我要椰菜同紅蘿蔔. Luna: 我要椰菜同紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Great. Or: 我要番茄同薯仔. Luna: 我要番茄同薯仔. Lucas: You're doing so well. Let's do a full dialogue. I'll be the market seller, you be the customer. Start by saying hello. Luna: 你好. Lucas: 你好. 你想買咩? Luna: 我要椰菜同紅蘿蔔. Lucas: 好. 仲有冇其他? Luna: 我要番茄. Lucas: 好. 總共係... Actually, let's keep it simple. So you say: 多謝. Luna: 多謝. Lucas: 唔該. That was a nice exchange. You used 我要 with vegetables, and you said 多謝. Perfect. Luna: Thanks! I feel like I could actually go to a market now. Lucas: You could! And remember, if you want to say 'I don't want', you can use 唔要. For example, 我唔要薯仔 means 'I don't want potato'. But that's for another episode. Luna: Good to know. So today we learned: 椰菜, 紅蘿蔔, 番茄, 薯仔. Lucas: And how to say 'I want' with them: 我要椰菜, 我要紅蘿蔔, etc. And 'and' is 同. Luna: 我要椰菜同紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick recap. I'll say the English, you say the Cantonese one more time. Cabbage. Luna: 椰菜. Lucas: Carrot. Luna: 紅蘿蔔. Lucas: Tomato. Luna: 番茄. Lucas: Potato. Luna: 薯仔. Lucas: I want cabbage. Luna: 我要椰菜. Lucas: I want carrot. Luna: 我要紅蘿蔔. Lucas: I want tomato. Luna: 我要番茄. Lucas: I want potato. Luna: 我要薯仔. Lucas: Beautiful. And that's it for today's episode. Remember to practice these at the market or when you're cooking. Keep listening to Fexingo for more Cantonese lessons. Luna: Yes, and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss the next one.
