Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Don't Renege On The Contract With Yourself
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle. I am deep in the
- 0:27Speaker 1: thick of it.
- 0:28Speaker 2: We are.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's Friday, Saturday, Sunday, two days out from my fourteenth marathon,
- 0:35Speaker 1: my seventh New York and the events are in full swing.
- 0:39Speaker 1: What a special time it is to be in New York.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And I understand that I am very inside baseball, like
- 0:46Speaker 1: I am immersed in this community, so that is why
- 0:49Speaker 1: it feels so hectic. But I would say, whether or
- 0:53Speaker 1: not you are a runner, this is the most special
- 0:56Speaker 1: time to be in this city period. I'm so grateful.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yesterday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the expo
- 1:05Speaker 1: and I got to meet some hurdlers as they were
- 1:07Speaker 1: picking up their bibs, and that's something I've never done before.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And to see the different people that were coming up
- 1:14Speaker 1: to our booth and their excitement was so contagious, and
- 1:17Speaker 1: it just felt so awesome to be a part of
- 1:21Speaker 1: such a special moment for them. People coming from oh
- 1:24Speaker 1: my goodness, Singapore, I checked in, people from Australia, truly
- 1:29Speaker 1: all ends of the earth.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It was so special.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I was talking about a lot of the events that
- 1:36Speaker 1: I went to, and one of the events that I
- 1:37Speaker 1: went to was a community dinner that was put together
- 1:40Speaker 1: by Nike and English Gardener was at the dinner, and
- 1:45Speaker 1: if you don't know English, she's one of the fastest
- 1:48Speaker 1: woman period. She's an Olympian and a Nike athlete. And
- 1:53Speaker 1: she was in conversation at the dinner with my dear
- 1:55Speaker 1: friend Rebecca talking about this contract that she made with herself.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And I want to share some of these sentiments here
- 2:02Speaker 1: because it really resonated with me. She talked about how
- 2:06Speaker 1: when she was on the come up in her sport,
- 2:08Speaker 1: she made this contract with herself and she refused to
- 2:11Speaker 1: go back on the terms of that contract. And I
- 2:14Speaker 1: found that terminology, that metaphor to be so powerful. She said,
- 2:20Speaker 1: you are the only person who will show up for
- 2:22Speaker 1: yourself the way that you deserve it each and every time.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And I do feel like that's a little bit it's
- 2:30Speaker 1: scary to think that way, right. There are going to
- 2:32Speaker 1: be people in your life, and there are currently people
- 2:35Speaker 1: in your life who will do anything and everything for you.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, English has a point,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you can truly rely on yourself because you know what
- 2:45Speaker 1: it is that you're after and what you're willing to
- 2:48Speaker 1: do to get it right. And so this concept of
- 2:51Speaker 1: having a contract with yourself and signing it in hypothetical ink,
- 2:57Speaker 1: knowing that you are worthy of sticking to that contract,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that your goals are worthy of non negotiables. I thought
- 3:06Speaker 1: that was really special, especially right now on the cusp
- 3:10Speaker 1: of such a big moment that I myself have really
- 3:15Speaker 1: invested in that I have truly taken on a chunk
- 3:19Speaker 1: of opportunity cost and it's because it makes me feel
- 3:23Speaker 1: like my best self.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And what an awesome opportunity that truly is.
- 3:28Speaker 1: For those of you that are going to be out
- 3:30Speaker 1: there this weekend, I wish you the best of luck.
- 3:31Speaker 1: For those of you that are listening at home, I
- 3:33Speaker 1: really hope that I have some awesome stories for you
- 3:37Speaker 1: next week. I talked about it on the show previously,
- 3:39Speaker 1: but I am chasing a feeling, and damn I am
- 3:41Speaker 1: so looking forward to this dance around my favorite place
- 3:46Speaker 1: in the world. My listener prompt for you this week,
- 3:49Speaker 1: what is one thing that you want to sign a
- 3:52Speaker 1: contract with yourself on. What's a goal that you're going after,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and what are you willing to undertake that opportunity cost
- 4:00Speaker 1: to go after. What's one goal that you have on
- 4:02Speaker 1: the horizon that you want to sign a contract with
- 4:05Speaker 1: yourself on, knowing that you should not go back on
- 4:10Speaker 1: the terms of the contract that you make with yourself.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hey Emily, I hope you're
- 4:18Speaker 1: doing great and resting up ahead of the NYC Marathon.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Wishing you all the best for this weekend from Argentina,
- 4:24Speaker 1: my question for you relates to content creation. I have
- 4:27Speaker 1: a nine to five desk job, but also do have
- 4:29Speaker 1: a pretty active lifestyle and I'm a certified run coach.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I want to start building a presence online, but struggle
- 4:35Speaker 1: to actually identify what of my normal slash boring routine
- 4:39Speaker 1: I could actually capture and share. You seem to have
- 4:42Speaker 1: a knack for showing what you're up to so organically.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Do you have any tips on getting started with that?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Sorry if that was a mouthful, Thanks again, Macarena. All right,
- 4:52Speaker 1: first of all, digging the name, I will say this
- 4:56Speaker 1: about sharing online, I think what's important is that whatever
- 4:59Speaker 1: you're sharing is off the dick to you, right, So
- 5:02Speaker 1: for me, I actually despite sharing a lot of my
- 5:06Speaker 1: day to day and pretty strategic with When I'm doing that,
- 5:10Speaker 1: my morning routine feels very authentic to me. It's something
- 5:13Speaker 1: that's very important to me. It's something that I have
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of boundaries around and really protect, and it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: something that makes sense for me to dive all in on.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But once I get home and kind of get into
- 5:25Speaker 1: the meat and potatoes for lack of a better term
- 5:28Speaker 1: of my day, I'm not as active on social So
- 5:31Speaker 1: I would recommend that you ask yourself what is it
- 5:36Speaker 1: that has value here? I think there should always be
- 5:40Speaker 1: a why to what it is that you're putting out
- 5:42Speaker 1: into the world. So to get comfortable with sharing more authentically,
- 5:47Speaker 1: ask yourself, what is it about what I do that
- 5:50Speaker 1: could be useful or helpful to another human being? And
- 5:54Speaker 1: you mentioned that you're a run coach, right, so maybe
- 5:57Speaker 1: when you're programming your coach for the people that you're
- 6:01Speaker 1: working with, you have lessons or insights that you can
- 6:04Speaker 1: instill in others.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I would say that's very useful.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Or perhaps in your own running, in your own training,
- 6:11Speaker 1: you've learned things that can help other people. Strategies, warm ups,
- 6:15Speaker 1: cool downs, how to go about organizing your training, how
- 6:21Speaker 1: to implement the different types of runs into a regular routine.
- 6:26Speaker 1: The more I'm talking here, the more I think you
- 6:28Speaker 1: can understand that you have a skill set, you have
- 6:31Speaker 1: knowledge that can be useful to others. So it then
- 6:35Speaker 1: becomes your opportunity to expel that there is only one
- 6:40Speaker 1: you at the end of the day. And when you say,
- 6:42Speaker 1: like my mundane day, a lot of people are living
- 6:45Speaker 1: mundane days. I don't want you to think that every
- 6:47Speaker 1: day that I'm living is really fun and exciting. In fact,
- 6:50Speaker 1: a lot of days are me going about my morning routine,
- 6:53Speaker 1: coming back and sitting in the studio right and getting
- 6:56Speaker 1: work done and planning and working and pitching and so
- 6:59Speaker 1: on and so forth. Mundane is relatable, vulnerability is relatable,
- 7:05Speaker 1: portraying this aura of perfection that ain't it. So embrace
- 7:10Speaker 1: whatever it is that your life is. Know that there's
- 7:12Speaker 1: only one you, and that sharing that you has value.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Period.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with us over on social
- 7:20Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle Podcast. I am over at Emily Abadi
- 7:24Speaker 1: and Last Little Hit. If you are in the New
- 7:26Speaker 1: York area, I'm doing a live but with Saline Flannagan,
- 7:29Speaker 1: the one the only at the expo. Anyone can enter,
- 7:33Speaker 1: whether you are running or not. It's on the Citizens
- 7:36Speaker 1: Stage at ten am on Saturday, and I'd love to
- 7:40Speaker 1: see you there. That's it, another hurdle conquered and a
- 7:44Speaker 1: big one on deck this weekend.
- 7:46Speaker 2: We've got this. Catch you guys next time.
