- 0:07The San Diego Chargers faced the Miami Dolphins for the 1982 NFL Divisional Round Playoffs at the Orange Bowl on January 16, 1983.
- 0:17San Diego had defeated Pittsburgh in the wild card round after finishing the strike shortened season with a 6-3 record under head coach Don Coriel.
- 0:26Miami was coached by Don Shula. They finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and then went on to defeat New England in the first round of the playoffs in order to advance.
- 0:36This audio recording is from the National Radio Broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
- 1:06And then Ubi Von Schaumann of Miami were both kicking the ball 55 yards through the uprights in practice.
- 1:12Well, Braneska kicked 16 out of 22, which is pretty strong. Von Schaumann has kicked 15 out of 20, but they're both very capable of kicking a long ball.
- 1:21It may be a big part of this game, and last year was an overtime 41 to 38, a classic matchup.
- 1:27And it's a game that people have been talking about all throughout the season, and we wonder what's going to happen today.
- 1:34You know, Jack, most people talk about the San Diego offense, but the game last year they won 41-38.
- 1:4129 points of those 41 were generated by the specialty team.
- 1:47The coin toss has been won by the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:52They'll now get the ball at the start of the game and operate into a wind at the open end of this orange ball, a grass field which appears to be playable, Hank, but it's not really much to brag about.
- 2:03Nothing classy, no. You're right, Jack. It's going to be fine, but nothing special.
- 2:07And the middle of the playing field is rather barren.
- 2:11Miami got this far by beating New England 28-13 as San Diego came from behind to defeat the Steelers 31-28.
- 2:19And the winner of this game will host the championship game against the New York Jets, and we congratulate them as we congratulate the Redskins.
- 2:27Yeah, no question about that. It's quite a surprise, I think, that not many people around the country realize how good a football team the New York Jets really are, man for man, and what a fine job Walt Michaels has done with that football team.
- 2:39The same is true of the Washington Redskins who won against the Minnesota Vikings 21-7 yesterday, and that was really a fine job by the excellent Washington Redskins team.
- 2:50And the winner of the game to be heard on CBS Radio later today, Green Bay at Dallas, will play at Washington next Saturday.
- 2:59Later today at 3.45 Eastern, the Packers and the Cowboys, Lindsey Nelson and Jim Kelly describing the action.
- 3:06Fulton Walker is back awaiting the kick from Ralph Fenerska. He'll kick from our right to our left as we start the game in the orange ball.
- 3:14The winner goes on to the championship game against the Jets, and the loser is out.
- 3:19Freneska's got a bigger catch around his left wrist. It's bigger than his shoe. He broke his wrist playing tennis during the strike, Jack, and it hasn't responded.
- 3:32And he'll kick it off to start the game. 75,000 plus in the sellout orange ball. A high short kick, and it is taken by the wingman.
- 3:41Off to the left side, returns it across the 20-yard line, and Eddie Hill comes out near the 25, and the Dolphins will start from there. What do you expect their approach to be?
- 3:50I think they're going to try to run. This is what they do best, coming into the game to three running, 13 passing.
- 3:58But this is what they like to do best, and I think they're going to do everything they possibly can to keep, try to keep the ball away from the San Diego offense.
- 4:06Andra Franklin gains 701 yards during the regular season. He's in the backfield.
- 4:14He's not in the backfield. Joni Nathan is back there, as Woodley is under center. Two tight ends, and a wing formation, and a pass play over the middle.
- 4:22Wide open, caught across the 35, out to the 40-yard line of Miami. On a first down to the wingback, the tight end, Bruce Hardy, and a first down for Miami.
- 4:33Jack, right off the bat, they caught him in a double zone, meaning that the outside receivers were covered by two defensive backs, two on each side.
- 4:43The tight end, the middle area was wide open. They took advantage of it. But they're going to throw high percentage kind of passes and run the ball,
- 4:49and be satisfied to make first downs and move the ball down the field and try to keep the ball away from the San Diego offense.
- 4:57Now Franklin checks into the backfield with Joni Nathan. And on first down from the 40, Nathan comes to the right and tries to turn the corner.
- 5:04He's headed the line of scrimmaging, gained only a yard, as the coverage by the lineman, Louis Keltcher, and the linebacker, Cliff Thrip, was very good.
- 5:14And Thrip was the first one there.
- 5:16The charges on defense, Jack, are 14th against the pass, five against the run.
- 5:20So it's reasonable to assume that the Miami Dolphins are going to feel strongly about throwing the ball some, along with what they want to do running wise.
- 5:27David Lewis is in at the starting left linebacker spot for the charges. And that's a change.
- 5:33Second down, and nine, as the pick up of one by Nathan on the last trip. And Woodley is going to pass again.
- 5:40Short drop over the middle, and incomplete. Off the hands of Hardy, coming in from the left side.
- 5:45He was covered by Woody Lowe and Cliff Thrip, the two linebackers. And he could have caught that ball, but didn't, and it's third and nine.
- 5:53Here again, San Diego is playing double on the outside people, and they're giving them the inside.
- 5:58Evidently, they don't feel they have that much respect for the tight end.
- 6:02Bruce Hardy's only committed, he committed the game with only 12 catches for the entire year.
- 6:06So they're probably gambling on the fact that they want to get the ball outside.
- 6:09They're going to double them and let them throw the ball inside and don't feel they're going to get hurt too badly with that time in operation.
- 6:15Out of the shotgun on third and nine from their own 40, Woodley sets up the throw, swings it out and the platenets caught.
- 6:20And the play is not good enough for a first down. The tackle is made across the 45.
- 6:26As Tony Nathan caught the ball, and the first one where was there was David Lewis.
- 6:31And it's time for the Dolphins to punt.
- 6:33Whenever you get the ball, you want to keep it for a period of time against San Diego and get some kind of points,
- 6:39because every time you give it to them, you are open to the dynamic San Diego offensive unit.
- 6:46Here is the punt coming up by Tom Oros, who averaged 38, almost 39 yards a kick, and James Brooks is back at his 10.
- 6:58We await the snap.
- 7:03And the snap is to Oros, who boots the ball.
- 7:06Pretty good kick, and Brooks waits and takes it on the 14, comes out to the 20 yard line, and is driven back.
- 7:13The ball came loose, Brooks got it back, and the ball is at the charger 20.
- 7:18The tackle made by Eddie Hill of Miami, a 41 yard punt, a five yard return.
- 7:24Some of the fans thought perhaps it was a fumble, but the play was dead at the 20 yard line.
- 7:29Chargers get it for the first time. With a score of nothing, nothing, let us take time out.
- 7:34Before you look under the hood of a new car, look at how the hood fits.
- 7:38If you look at a Honda, you'll see the hood, doors, trunk, and hatch fit the body with close tolerances.
- 7:45That's Honda quality.
- 7:47And that's one reason why Hondas have traditionally retained a high resale value among the best in the industry.
- 7:54You only have to look at how the hood fits to understand that.
- 7:58Honda, we make you feel good.
- 8:04If you're looking to make the most of your potential, look into the choices today's Army offers.
- 8:09If you qualify, you can choose your skill training, choose to serve two, three, or four years.
- 8:14You may even get to choose thousands of dollars in college benefits and additional cash bonuses.
- 8:19The choices are all yours.
- 8:24Talk to your local Army recruiter.
- 8:32Paid for by the U.S. Army.
- 8:35The Chargers go to work. They're a good offensive line.
- 8:37Down basic at the center, Doug Wilkerson and Ed White at the guard, Billy Shields and Russ Washington are the tackles.
- 8:45Chandler is a wide receiver along with Joyner.
- 8:49Winds on motion and a toss to Muncie running right.
- 8:52Cuts it up, gets big yards, spins across the 30 for a first down.
- 8:56He's out to the 32 yard line on a big run on the first play before Glenn Blackwood tackled him.
- 9:04You know, interesting that time with formations, they dictate what the defense is going to do by the variety of things they do offensively.
- 9:11Talking about San Diego, they had a double cover on the outside receivers when the ball, before the ball was snapped, they sent a guy in motion though to take single.
- 9:19They ran that way to eliminate the force and Chuck Muncie was able to pick up a big gain on the play.
- 9:24Winds low is in motion, bounce back to throw and he is back inside the 25 yard line.
- 9:31He was bounced on by Kim Boeckamper.
- 9:36He was going to throw it out in the plant, decided he wouldn't do that and held the ball and Boeckamper just buried him back there.
- 9:42He had no idea that there was pressure from the back side.
- 9:45That's the great thing about the right end or the end position on the back side, the quarterback never sees him.
- 9:51He never saw him and got a shot in the back.
- 9:54As a result of the second down and 17 or the Chargers going from our right to our left.
- 10:07And bounce sets up to throw again long over the middle and overthrows his man.
- 10:13He tried to get Winslow down the middle and Winslow is limping as he goes back toward the huddle.
- 10:18He got a bruised toe, came into the game with a bruised toe and he was limping noticeably trying to release downfield in the middle of the area against the double zone.
- 10:29Third down and 17, the Dolphins took the opening kickoff, kept it for two and a half minutes and had to punt.
- 10:35Chargers have it for the first time, they've been sacked one time and it's third and 17 from their own 25.
- 10:42He's under center, back to throw, he's rushed, steps up, steps out and throws and it is intercepted by Miami coming back the other way with the ball.
- 10:52Gerald Small has it inside the San Diego 30 down to the 27 yard line of the Chargers.
- 11:00On a tipped ball, Gerald Small intercepted.
- 11:06He threw well under heavy pressure and probably shouldn't have thrown it at all, Hank.
- 11:11One thing that you have to do against Fouts, you must get inside pressure.
- 11:16They got inside pressure that time, they made him throw off balance, he threw right into a lot of folks and it was intercepted.
- 11:23Well you know that San Diego fell behind against the Steelers last week before they came back to win.
- 11:28They're in danger of falling behind against the Dolphins here, the ball is at the San Diego 26.
- 11:34Andra Franklin hasn't carried the ball yet, he's in the backfield.
- 11:38He's in the middle of the room and he's outside, outside receivers, Jack.
- 11:41Here's a delay to Franklin, goes outside, gets a couple of blocks inside the 25 and down near the 21 yard line.
- 11:49He got five or six yards before Mike Williams, the cornerback, tackled him.
- 11:54Andra Franklin is 5'10 to 25 and he picked up six yards on the run.
- 12:01And he's the number two draft choice from Nebraska in 1981.
- 12:06Now Franklin comes out and Tony Nathan is in.
- 12:09D'Oreal Harris is to the left.
- 12:12Jimmy Cephalo to the right, the two tight ends.
- 12:16Are Lee and Hardy.
- 12:18On second down and with Hardy in motion, Woodley tosses to Nathan running right, drives down to the 20 yard line.
- 12:26And he picked up about three, it'll be third and short for the Dolphins to tackle by Louis Keltcher.
- 12:35The defensive backs, the left corner Jeff Allen and the right corner Mike Williams, both are very deep, Jack.
- 12:42And it looks like you should be able to throw in front of them when they're in that alignment.
- 12:48Woody Bennett and Andra Franklin, two big backs are in there now for Miami.
- 12:52They have the ball at the San Diego 18, third down and two.
- 12:57They line up in the high formation with Bennett at the tailback.
- 13:01Morris sets up as the wingback.
- 13:03Woodley gives it to Bennett, first down inside the 10, five.
- 13:07Here's Cephalo at the five, first and goal.
- 13:09Andra Franklin clears the way.
- 13:11Woody Bennett landed the five yard line before Bruce Laird made a touchdown saving Cephalo.
- 13:17They put it down at the six.
- 13:19John Geisler, Kuchenberg, boy they did a good job of blocking at the point of attack.
- 13:25And they got good movement off the ball.
- 13:28First and goal to go.
- 13:29We're coming up on the nine minute mark remaining in the first quarter and interception has set the Dolphins on the march
- 13:35and Tony Nathan and Andra Franklin are in their backfield.
- 13:38First and goal from the six yard line.
- 13:42Split backs, two tight ends including Joe Rhodes.
- 13:47And here is Franklin running left, turning it up, driving down to the four near the three yard line on first down.
- 13:54Louis Keltcher was there and he got the help he needed. Leroy Jones, Louis Keltcher, Gary Johnson and Keith Ferguson are playing up front for the Chargers.
- 14:05They mark Franklin down at the three yard line.
- 14:10And it's second and goal.
- 14:12And this time Miami is keeping the ball for a period of time.
- 14:16We have eight twenty left in the scoreless first quarter.
- 14:21Moore is going back, second and goal from the three, Moore in motion.
- 14:25Here is a roll out by Willie and a pass. Touchdown Miami!
- 14:30He hit Matt Moore who was in motion to the right just inside the goal line.
- 14:34And the Dolphins intercept the San Diego pass and go on top six to nothing.
- 14:49Matt Moore, the recipient of that three yard touchdown pass.
- 14:54And of course people look askance at the San Diego defense and Miami certainly moved it against them on that first drive.
- 15:02Extra point drive by Von Schaumann who is twenty one out of twenty two during the regular season.
- 15:07Don Strzok will hold the ball.
- 15:11By snap they get it down, the kick is good and it's seven to nothing.
- 15:16Six plays, twenty six yards, three minutes and three seconds after the interception by Gerald Small.
- 15:22Seven nothing Miami, eight oh eight left in the first quarter and we'll be back in just a moment.

- 16:24Heartbeat.
- 16:28Silver Bowl Sunday is two weekends away. Sunday January 30th you'll get it all from CBS Radio Sports right here.
- 16:35It's something special.
- 16:37James Brooks is deep, he's flanked by Joe Danton Bauer.
- 16:42And San Diego will get the kickoff after falling behind seven and nothing.
- 16:49The referee is Jerry Mark Bright and we await his signal.
- 16:538.08 left in the first quarter.
- 16:57Miami is very difficult to beat here on their home field.
- 17:01Yeah they really are, they're tough and especially, you know San Diego had to go 81 yards the first time they had to get the ball.
- 17:06They made a mistake. Miami had to go just 27 yards. They took advantage of it.
- 17:10That's what you have to do when you get good field positions.
- 17:13At least seven and nothing but basically because of that good field position.
- 17:17Here's the kickoff and it is James Brooks taking it on the 11, quickly to the 15, to the 20, trying to get outside, cannot.
- 17:24He's driven out of bounds at the 22 of San Diego.
- 17:29Paul Langford was holding down the sideline over there and wouldn't let Brooks turn the corner.
- 17:36Well San Diego would prefer to be ahead but they don't mind being behind.
- 17:40They've been behind many times with explosions that they have that close them off.
- 17:44That's why anything can happen anywhere on the field.
- 17:50First down at their own 22.
- 17:54A three man front with Gordon the linebacker right up on the line of scrimmage.
- 17:57Here's a give to Muncie and a fumble.
- 17:59Loose ball inside the 20. It belongs to San Diego.
- 18:04So they've had a sack, an interception and a fumble but they got this one back at their own 16 and they lost six yards.
- 18:11Bouts fell on it after Muncie fumbled it.
- 18:13It looks like a bad, bad exchange. He didn't get the ball in the pocket.
- 18:18It wasn't Muncie's fault Jack. It really was the quarterback's fault.
- 18:21He put it on the hip and he didn't have possession and for that reason he fumbled it.
- 18:26Second down and 16.
- 18:31Chandler is to the left side and a motion back to the right.
- 18:35Here's a delay and some room up the middle and Muncie comes out to the 19 and that's all.
- 18:41Larry Gordon filled the hole in a big hurry.
- 18:44And Ernie Roan the inside linebacker helped and it's third and long for San Diego and they can't get on track.
- 18:50Muncie didn't get as much out of that draw play as he should have.
- 18:53Really there was a big hole on the left side but he ran right into traffic.
- 18:57Could have got a lot more out of the plays than he did.
- 19:00Dwight Scales checks in as the extra wide receiver for the Chargers.
- 19:05Winslow is on a wing to the right.
- 19:07Joiner goes in motion. Bouts back to throw.
- 19:10Has time. Throws now and it's caught beyond the 35 yard line for a first down.
- 19:16What a throw by Fouts and on the money to West Chandler who went high and caught it.
- 19:22First down for San Diego on the third down and 12 play.
- 19:26Chandler is a great leaper and he's a runner receiver.
- 19:31By that I mean anytime he catches the ball he can run for a touchdown.
- 19:35He's got terrific running abilities.
- 19:37He was a college running back at the University of Florida and he can do it all.
- 19:42That was third and 12 when Fouts given time to throw hit his deep man.
- 19:46And now on first down running right is James Brooks.
- 19:49He's blocked, used the block, comes out across the 40 yard line
- 19:53and he is down at the San Diego 41.
- 19:58And he picked up four yards on the play.
- 20:01Brooks tackled by A.J. Dewey and Glenn Blackwood.
- 20:03There are two Blackwoods in the defensive backfield of the Dolphins, Lyle and Glenn.
- 20:12Second down and six. Seven to nothing.
- 20:14Miami leading first quarter, five and a half minutes left in the period.
- 20:19Brooks and Muncie are in the backfield.
- 20:21That's quite a one-two punch.
- 20:23On second down a pass play by Fouts.
- 20:25Sets and throws, runs out of the pocket, throws on the run, caught at the 40.
- 20:29Then the tackle is broken and yards are gained by San Diego.
- 20:33As Muncie is finally down out at the 44 it's going to be third down and three.
- 20:39And a big hit on the receiver.
- 20:45Third down and two and a half.
- 20:47We'll call it third and three coming up for San Diego.
- 20:51Muncie can catch the ball. He is very good at it and he just did.
- 20:55And Winslow is out of the game.
- 20:56He's really having trouble with that bad toe jack.
- 20:58He just went off the field. He's not in the lineup.
- 21:01O'Lehan is in at the other tight end spot.
- 21:03He goes in motion.
- 21:04Bouts gives to Brooks trying for the first down and did not get it.
- 21:08He's all down from behind by the linebacker Bob Brudzinski.
- 21:13They had the Miami defense all confused and were running around all over the place
- 21:17didn't know where to go because they were looking for Winslow and he wasn't in the game.
- 21:21They ran right into the strength of the formation defensively just by accident.
- 21:27So after being intercepted the last time San Diego in possession of their own 44
- 21:33will punt for the first time with Maury Buford the kicker. He's averaged 41 yards a kick
- 21:38and Tom Vigorito stands inside his 15 for the Dolphins.
- 21:44439 left in the quarter. Miami leading 7-0 and about to get the ball.
- 21:48And there's the punt by Buford.
- 21:50High and deep and Vigorito should let it go.
- 21:53He took it out in the five. He's back to the ten and he's tackled at the 12 and he made a mistake.
- 22:01The ball is back at the Miami 12 yard line after that 50 yard punt and the tackle by Andre Young.
- 22:08With a score 7-0 Dolphins let us take time out.
- 22:12This bird's for you. There's no one else who does it quite the way you do. So here's to you. You know all you do. You know the king of beers has done it through. All you do.
- 22:34This bird's for you. This bird's for you. This bird's for you. For being on the job and working hard all day. So here's to you.
- 22:52For all you do you know the king of beer that's coming through. For all you do. This bird's for you. This bird's for you.
- 23:06And by the bush. St. Louis.
- 23:09Callan Winslow is walking along the sideline in front of the San Diego bench trying to pull himself back together and if he can't play at, well he probably won't play at peak efficiency, but if he can't be in there for most of the time the Chargers will be in trouble.
- 23:27Miami goes from there 12. It's a first down. And here is a give to the running back Tony Nathan trying to turn the corner. Does to the 15, to the 20, beyond the 20 and out of bounds. That's the 23 yard line and that's the Miami first down.
- 23:41These which have the ability and the speed to get outside and turn that corner are tough to stop.
- 23:47They got a poor force that time Jack. They were very deep in the secondary. Got a good block by the guard pulling around the outside. And Nathan was able to get around everybody and do a good job and pick up a first down on the play.
- 24:01Jim Fox made the tackle at the Miami 23. So they've come away from their 12 to the 23.
- 24:09And they use Hardy on a wing.
- 24:12Too tight information.
- 24:15Whitley is under center.
- 24:18And a surge by San Diego. Here is the pass and it's caught out here to the right side by Tony Nathan.
- 24:26Folks were looking for a flag to come down thinking that perhaps San Diego was offside or they were drawn off. Was there a flag thrown in?
- 24:33No I don't see one. The tight end was offside it looked like.
- 24:38I think the ball is at the 33. That's another first down as Nathan caught the ball. Everybody in the stadium was waiting for a flag to come down and none was thrown.
- 24:49Looked like Ronnie Lee the tight end was offside on the play.
- 24:53Everybody in the stadium cheered when they realized that the Dolphins probably got away with something.
- 25:01So the ball is at the Miami 33. Chargers complained about that. It's a first down.
- 25:08Here is a toss to the fullback Franklin. Starts outside, cuts inside and comes to the 40. Picked up seven yards.
- 25:15And it looks like we're watching John Riggins again. David Lewis and Louis Kelcher made the tackle.
- 25:22They're getting a lot of yards. They're using a big chunk. They're using a wing formation.
- 25:26And doing a good job of blocking down and getting people out in front of the ball carrier. They did it again that time.
- 25:32And now it's second and three.
- 25:35Dolphins already lead seven to nothing. Three forty left in the first quarter.
- 25:40Second down and three from the Miami 40 yard line.
- 25:43Boy look at that tight end.
- 25:46Here is Woodley back to throw and he looks throws outside. It's wide open and it's caught for another first down.
- 25:52And going out of bounds at midfield is Tony Nathan. Tackle by Jeff Allen the cornerback. Another first down from Miami.
- 26:00And they had double coverage on the outside and they had the middle wide open.
- 26:04And in spite of that they still got the ball in a flat in front of the double coverage. Amazing.
- 26:10That stops the clock with three twenty nine left in the first quarter.
- 26:14And the Dolphins appear to be capable of doing whatever they want to do.
- 26:17Andrew Franklin. Tom Vigorito are in the backfield now.
- 26:25Vigorito splits out. He's wide to the right. Look at all the room on this side. Fourteen yards.
- 26:32On first down Woodley back to throw. Looks and throws long down the left sideline out of bounds threw it away incomplete.
- 26:41And Hank Stram is shaking his head.
- 26:44One and one on this side. All the room in the world and he never even looked over here Jack.
- 26:48Never saw it and threw it in the traffic and threw it out of bounds.
- 26:52Second down and ten from midfield for Miami.
- 26:56They scored with eight minutes left in this quarter on a three yard pass to Ned Moore after an interception by Gerald Small.
- 27:05And the Dolphins have been unable to get on track on offense.
- 27:09And Kellan Winslow is jimpy here today.
- 27:12Second and ten for Miami.
- 27:16Here is a give to Nathan running with a ball inside the forty five.
- 27:20To the forty. First down down to the thirty seven yard line of San Diego.
- 27:25On what appeared to be a passing situation they ran with a ball.
- 27:29A good clearing block by the fullback Franklin and a dandy run by Tony Nathan.
- 27:34He's one of the early stars of this game.
- 27:36Yeah it was a delayed draw play. They faked to the fullback and then give it to the halfback.
- 27:41Good blocking out in front. Number sixty Jeff Taze the right guard did a good job at the point of attack.
- 27:47And he goes in there for another big gain in the play on a first down.
- 27:51Woody Lowe made the tackle along with Andre Young.
- 27:53First down now at the San Diego thirty seven. Some drive by the Dolphins.
- 27:58Nathan in the backfield. On first down a pass play Woodley.
- 28:02Outside right it's caught by Nathan. Stumbles down to the thirty yard line.
- 28:06And he got seven yards would have had more but he slipped and had to dive to the thirty for those seven yards covered by Cliff Thrift.
- 28:14They're using a triple wing formation on the left side Jack with a tight end a wing back and a flanker.
- 28:19And then they got a split in on the right with a back in the backfield behind the right tackle.
- 28:23And they're just one on one situation with a back and a linebacker and gosh it's just like stealing.
- 28:28They're doing everything they desire. It's second down and three.
- 28:34And a tough play for the Chargers to defense. Harris comes to the right.
- 28:44And Harris to the other receiver. There goes Andre Franklin trying to get outside but cannot do it and he is tackled at the line of scrimmage.
- 28:52In fact lost a half of yard half a yard and third and four comes up.
- 29:00Under a Franklin lost one. We're down to a minute and a half left in the first quarter.
- 29:05Bruce Laird was the tackler on that last play.
- 29:10And Cephalo comes in along with Harris.
- 29:16And Joel Rose, Tony Nathan and Tom Figueroa. Out over the ball Dwight Stephenson the center and in the shotgun.
- 29:24Woodley back to throw throws and it's caught inside the 25 for a first down.
- 29:30Insane the heavy traffic and the pass was caught by Tony Nathan.
- 29:35He was hit by Lewis and Pryp the linebackers and Nathan is having a field day and that's another Miami first down.
- 29:43And Woodley is right on target.
- 29:48The ball at the San Diego 23 a first down. 40 seconds left in the first quarter. Woodley had a great game last week against New England.
- 29:56And a very good game in the final game of the regular season against Baltimore.
- 30:01Nathan is caught five for 39 yards. Russ three times 28 yards.
- 30:06First down at the 23. Here running with the ball is Nathan to the right.
- 30:10He drives inside the 20 down to the 18. He got five on what probably will be the final play of the first quarter.
- 30:17The tackle by Lewis and Laird and the Chargers cannot stop the Dolphins.
- 30:24They will not run another play here in the first quarter.
- 30:27When we resume they will have the ball at the 18 of San Diego. It will be second down and six.
- 30:33That's the end of the first quarter with a score of the Dolphins seven San Diego nothing.
- 30:39It's 50 a part in Larry. Well I'm a today kind of guy. I guess. What say I spin a little wet?
- 30:44That's a great idea. Tiffany? Yes Larry? It's your eye. Yes Tiffany? Yes Larry?
- 30:50It's your stereo. Huh? Call me when you get a Quasar.
- 30:53You know Quasar is the name to call for dependable quality products.
- 30:57Now Quasar is the name for great savings. It's the Quasar annual fantastic factory sale.
- 31:03And it's going on now as you're participating Quasar dealer.
- 31:06Quasar!
- 31:09I was getting my hair cut and the stories going around the barbershop kept getting taller as my hair got shorter.
- 31:16So I told a true story about a Honda Accord four door sedan.
- 31:20Went like this. A fellow bought one and took it for a shakedown run.
- 31:25Well the Honda Accord rode so smoothly that he relaxed in the plush seats at the cruise control that comes standard
- 31:31and enjoyed the scenery quietly passing by.
- 31:34When he returned he went to open the trunk and found his wallet lying on the Accord's rear bumper.
- 31:41He put it there while loading the trunk and had forgotten it.
- 31:45That should give you an idea about the smooth ride a Honda Accord four door sedan can deliver I said.
- 31:50Well the barber shook his head. I swore the story was true because it is.
- 31:55I got up to pay for my haircut and I found I had misplaced my wallet. Again.
- 32:02We make it feel right.
- 32:09Miami Dolphins have already kept the ball for four and a half minutes. They lead 7 to nothing.
- 32:13They have second and six at the San Diego 18 yard line.
- 32:16The scoring in the first period of three yard pass and not more.
- 32:20Following an interception by Gerald Small against Dan Fouts.
- 32:25Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CDS Radio Network.
- 32:30You're listening to WKSI El Dorado 44 degrees at 12 o'clock
- 32:38We start the second quarter
- 32:41And this will be the 11th play of this current drive
- 32:45And David Woodley has a hot hand here at the outset seven and nine for 57 yards. He's hot and one touchdown
- 32:52Mason in the backfield with Franklin from the 18. Here is a delay to Franklin sliding left yard big yard
- 33:00Down to the 10, first down and goal to go
- 33:02Inside the 10 yard line before Woodley Laws stopped
- 33:04Andra Franklin and evidently
- 33:06The offensive line of the Dolphins is kicking them out. They really are. They're doing a number on them
- 33:14And that's worse being done. It's being won up front by the way the offensive line is handling
- 33:19The line of scrimmage at this stage of the game against the San Diego Chargers
- 33:23Right at the 10 yard line it is first and goal
- 33:27And Miami is a personal team with a lot of weapons to get into the end zone. Franklin is the lone setback
- 33:34Two tight ends and a wing formation. Woodley gives to Franklin more yards driving inside the 5 down to the 4
- 33:42Forward progress to the 3 and it's second and goal from 3 and a half yards away
- 33:47The grip and Jim Fox tackle him
- 33:51But Franklin is tearing up the turf along with Tony Nathan for the Dolphins
- 33:59Franklin ran to the San Diego 3
- 34:03And the Dolphins leading 7 to nothing are about to make it 14
- 34:07And they're dominating the game and keeping the offense to the San Diego Chargers on the bench
- 34:11That's what it's all about and they're doing a great job. Looks like they could run something left here
- 34:15Here sliding to the left side as Franklin turns it up and goes over for a touchdown
- 34:20He drives the camper into the end zone
- 34:23Clips the line back to hit him but couldn't stop him
- 34:26And there's another touchdown from Miami. It's 13 to nothing
- 34:35All of that after Tom Vigorito fielded a punt at his 5, returned it to the 12
- 34:41The Dolphins then went roaring down the field, 89 yards, 13 plays
- 34:47Chargers unable to stop them, 5 minutes and 56 seconds they held the ball
- 34:54With Franklin getting the touchdown and Von Schaumann trying to make it 14 to nothing
- 34:58Don Strock holding
- 35:04The kick is
- 35:06Good, it's 14 to nothing Miami. They're tough to beat in the orange ball
- 35:10And the Chargers had better get started with the score 14 to nothing let us take time out

- 36:16James Brooks will be the deepest for San Diego
- 36:19They await the kickoff
- 36:20We said it earlier, they prefer to be ahead
- 36:22They don't go to pieces when they fall behind
- 36:25But the way they've fallen behind has to be disturbing to the San Diego team
- 36:30Has to be
- 36:31Miami has made it look very easy
- 36:33They've run the ball, they've thrown the ball, they've done everything
- 36:35Everything they want to do offensively
- 36:38And San Diego hasn't come close to stopping them so far
- 36:42And we'll have to wait and see after this kickoff how Kellyn Winslow fares
- 36:45Here's the kick, it's high and it's rather deep and it may go out of bounds
- 36:49No, it bounces inside the 10 and San Diego is lucky to get it back
- 36:53The ball comes loose out beyond the playing
- 36:55Who has it?
- 36:57Miami has it on the fumble kickoff
- 37:01Hank Bauer and Brooks were waiting for the ball to go out of bounds
- 37:04But it took a very fortunate bounce for Miami
- 37:08And then when Bauer tried to pick it up, he was smacked
- 37:12The ball squirted out to the 23 and Yuvy Von Schamann who kicked the ball recovered the fumble
- 37:18It really popped right into his arms like somebody threw a pass
- 37:21It was amazing
- 37:23It hit the turf and there again instead of being satisfied
- 37:27Of falling the ball, Jack, he tried to pick it up and run with it
- 37:30Which was a bad mistake, you see it happen all the time
- 37:33It happened there again and now Miami has another excellent opportunity on the plus 23
- 37:40And a Miami player is being tended to
- 37:43Stopping the clock with 13.22 left in the half
- 37:46Miami has the ball at the San Diego 23
- 37:50And with the score already 14 to nothing in favor of the Dolphins, let us take time out

- 38:53Last year, the end of the first quarter in this playoff game between these same two teams
- 38:59Was San Diego out in front 24 to nothing
- 39:03And Miami came back and then San Diego eventually won it
- 39:09They got the same formation where they throw the ball in the plant to the back or the guy on the outside
- 39:14They're running outside from a some too, but the guy in the plant, they're running inside this time with a trap
- 39:18Here's Nathan driving down inside the 20 yard line
- 39:22And he gets yards to the 17 of San Diego
- 39:26And Leroy Jones tackled him
- 39:28And even when the Chargers get a shot at the ball carrier, they're tackling as atrocious
- 39:32Yeah, they still continue to make yardage
- 39:35They're running right through the tackles
- 39:38Nathan ran for five yards
- 39:40And he gives way now to Andra Franklin
- 39:4512.50 left and a half, Miami leading 14 to nothing and on the drive again
- 39:51The ball is at the 18 of San Diego
- 39:54And here is a delay to Franklin, finds his way down to the 16
- 39:59He got two yards and it'll be third and three, the tackle by Woody Lowe
- 40:03And the defense of N. Keith Ferguson, and that time the tackling was good
- 40:09Franklin ran to the 16
- 40:12Third down and three
- 40:14Well, there's been an interception against San Diego, they've been sacked, they've fumbled a kickoff
- 40:2112.10 left and a half, Figueroa is in the backfield with Nathan now
- 40:25They like to throw the ball to Figueroa who's on a wing
- 40:28Boy, there's a lot of room on that right side
- 40:30Out of the shotgun, the pass to the right side, it's caught
- 40:33It's caught for a first down to the 12 yard line by Figueroa, made a fine catch, got his feet in on a perfect throw by Woodley
- 40:43By playing baseball, I'm playing catch out there, Jack, they haven't stopped that play yet
- 40:47Back in the flat, the receiver goes downfield, he's just licking the linebacker
- 40:52Going to the outside, the ball was thrown perfectly for another first down
- 40:57And Woodley is throwing the ball with a great deal of authority
- 41:00I don't know how they criticize the kid, he's done a great job for them all year long
- 41:04And he keeps hearing things about the fact that they'd be an excellent team if they had a good quarterback
- 41:08I think this kid's one of the fine quarterbacks in the league, young quarterback
- 41:11First down at the 12 yard line of the Chargers
- 41:14Tony and Nathan, a bootleg play and here's the quarterback running inside the 10 and out of bounds
- 41:21Just outside the 6, he got about five
- 41:24On a bootleg, David Lewis chased him out and running with the ball is not unusual for Woodley
- 41:30During the regular season, he ran 36 times and averaged almost 6 yards to carry
- 41:39Time of possession is really being dominated now by the Dolphins who have the ball at the Chargers 6
- 41:46Second down and five, actually four, second down and four
- 41:55Four of the Dolphins, they're leading 14 to nothing and they're on the move
- 42:00Franklin is back in there along with Woodley Bennett
- 42:03Franklin drives to him out the 3 yard line
- 42:06He may have a first and goal
- 42:08They mark it at the 3 and that's going to be short of a first down by about a half a yard
- 42:14Gary Johnson was the tackler, third and short coming up for the Dolphins
- 42:20This time it was Bennett leading the blocking for Franklin
- 42:26I can't get over what a great job that offensive line is doing, they're really blowing them off the line of scrimmage, Jack
- 42:31Third down and one, 11-15 left in the half
- 42:36Bennett and Franklin in the backfield
- 42:39Here goes Franklin and he drives for a first and goal about a yard and a half away from the goal line
- 42:45Woodley Woodrowman back along with Gary Johnson
- 42:48It's going to be first and goal for Miami from a yard and a half away
- 42:58They have marked the ball down at the 1
- 43:03All of this after the fumbled kickoff by the Chargers
- 43:07You talk about the offensive scoring machine on the field, it's the Dolphins, it's not San Diego
- 43:1310-45 left in the half, first and goal from the 1
- 43:17How are you going to stop Franklin? The only thing that could stop him would be a fumble
- 43:21Something right
- 43:22Woodley is under center and on a sneak, he lunges to the goal line and did not get in and a flag goes down
- 43:28A flag goes down as Woodley tried to sneak it into the end zone
- 43:34And we have the call coming up, procedure against Miami
- 43:40That will make it first and goal from the 6
- 43:43And in penalties that's their first of the game
- 43:57All they have to do again, Jack, is run the play with the back of the flat
- 44:03Outside receiver, inside, they haven't stopped that yet if they decide they want to throw the football
- 44:08We have 10-33 left in the half
- 44:12And the ball is at the 6, first and goal, Miami
- 44:16Hardy is on a wing and Tony Nathan is in the backfield
- 44:20Woodley the quarterback, back to throw, Dumpson in the end zone, touchdown!
- 44:26Touchdown to the big side end, Ronnie Lee
- 44:29That's his first touchdown of the year
- 44:32And it's 20 to nothing
- 44:34Same formation, Jack, except this time instead of hitting the guy in the flat
- 44:38They hit the tight end, it was wide open right in the middle which was very obvious
- 44:41Great read on the part of the young quarterback, David Woodley
- 44:45Makes it 20 to nothing with 10-29 remaining in the half
- 44:52So they turn an interception into a touchdown and they turn the fumble on a kickoff also into a touchdown
- 44:59And the extra point drive by Von Schaumann
- 45:03He recovered the fumble that led to the TD
- 45:07Strzok gets the ball down and it is 21 to nothing
- 45:12If Miami wins, the Jets will come here
- 45:15If San Diego wins, the Jets will go there
- 45:1810-29 left in the half, 21 to nothing Miami, we'll be back in just a moment
- 45:24Later today on CBS Radio at 345 Eastern Time, Green Bay at Dallas
- 45:30From Texas Stadium, Lindsey Nelson and Jim Kelly
- 45:33James Brooks awaits the kick
- 45:35Von Schaumann boots it
- 45:38It'll be returned by Brooks from the 7 to the 10 to the 15 to the 20 to the 25
- 45:43Flags down, fumble! Miami gets the ball!
- 45:47Now we'll check the flag
- 45:49Miami has the ball
- 45:51And the James Brooks fumble and we'll check the flag
- 45:54Rich Diana, a rookie from Yale, recovered the ball
- 45:57Let's check the penalty
- 45:59The penalty is going to be against
- 46:05San Diego Is... I better wait, I better wait
- 46:09It's against
- 46:14The penalty is against San Diego
- 46:16The penalty is declined, the ball belongs to Miami again
- 46:19And where is the ball? It is put down at the San Diego 37
- 46:25And their defensive unit has to come back out of the field
- 46:28This is incredible, isn't it?
- 46:30Coriel's got to be shell-shocked
- 46:34Rich Diana, the rookie from Yale, recovered the ball
- 46:38At the San Diego 37
- 46:41We still have 10-17 left to play in the half
- 46:45The score is 21-0 Miami
- 46:49And that's the third turnover by the Chargers
- 46:55And on each one Miami is stuck into them
- 46:58The offensive unit of the Dolphins has got to be getting pooped
- 47:03This is really a surprise
- 47:07Tony Nathan is the setback
- 47:09David Woodley under center, Nathan straight ahead
- 47:12Three yards to the 34
- 47:19Back up by Keith Ferguson
- 47:22Personal foul against San Diego
- 47:24And a late flag was thrown
- 47:28Nathan ran to the 34 and the referee runs to the 20
- 47:33The call is against Bruce Laird and it takes the ball to the Charger 30
- 47:36Unnecessary work with him for 30 defense, first down
- 47:40And Miami is in a spot to make it 28-0
- 47:43The call is against Bruce Laird and it takes the ball to the Charger 30
- 47:4510-10 left in the half
- 47:47First and 10 at the 20
- 47:50Miami has run 30 plays, second and third
- 47:52And Miami is in a spot to make it 28-0
- 47:5610-10 left in the half
- 47:58First and 10 at the 20
- 48:01Miami has run 30 plays, San Diego only 10
- 48:07On first down, here's Tony Nathan
- 48:11Sailing down to the 17, he got three yards
- 48:14There was good penetration by the blitzing linebacker at that time
- 48:18But Nathan eluded the first tackler and was finally stopped by Bruce Laird at the 17
- 48:25The ball is at the San Diego 17
- 48:32Already close enough for a field goal try, but the Dolphins haven't been stopped
- 48:37So they're thinking touchdown and it's second down and seventh
- 48:41David Woodley gives to Nathan running right, there's room, he gets a block
- 48:47Puts between tacklers, drives inside the 10
- 48:49First and goal, Miami
- 48:51Jeff Paves with a big block that's strung him loose
- 48:55He's playing where Ed Newman had been playing
- 48:58Newman is out for the year
- 49:00I tell you, I guess right that time the defense was rotated to the other side
- 49:04They had a lot of room to run and they took advantage of it
- 49:07They did a good job of blocking Lewis
- 49:09Lewis came off the block and almost got a piece of the tackle
- 49:12But not until after, Nathan made the necessary yardage for the first down
- 49:17Franklin comes out, it is first and goal at the nine yard line of San Diego
- 49:22They are just killing the Chargers here as the turnovers have killed them
- 49:28In the backfield it's Eddie Hill
- 49:31And on first down a pass play
- 49:33And Woodley is on the run for his life and he's sacked back at the 25 yard line
- 49:39David Woodley is sacked back at the 25 as they finally got to him
- 49:43Keith Ferguson was in there and then he got some help
- 49:48And that slows down the Miami Dynamite offense
- 49:52A loss all the way back to the 25
- 49:55Well you talk about field position, Miami has headed on the plus 27, plus 23, plus 37
- 50:02Well, when you're playing on a short field like that and the other team has to play on a long one, it's tough
- 50:09Block running, 8.50 left in the first half, second and goal from the 25
- 50:14A pass play by Woodley, he throws and it is!
- 50:17A run at the ten yard line!
- 50:19Incredibly by Jimmy Stapelo, despite heavy coverage from Williams and Laird
- 50:26And it'll be third and goal from the nine again
- 50:30Well he made a sensational catch
- 50:33And we saw him make that same kind of a play against Buffalo the last time we saw them play right here in the Orange Bowl
- 50:408.41 left in the half, the score here is Miami 21, San Diego nothing
- 50:47It's third and goal from the nine, the original line of scrimmage
- 50:52Before the sack, on third down Miami has made a first down four times in five tries
- 50:58Woodley is under center
- 51:01And he's back to throw, he rolls right, he comes back into the pocket, throws, it's caught by Nathan
- 51:07And he's tackled at the seven and it's time for Miami to try a field goal
- 51:11Woodley Low tackled Nathan at the seven yard line
- 51:16Well they couldn't get the touchdown that time
- 51:21It's 21 to nothing with 8.18 left in the half
- 51:27The Miami offensive unit is applauded by the crowd of 75,000 on a sunny day in the Orange Bowl
- 51:33And Ubi Von Scharman is in
- 51:36He kicked
- 51:4315 out of 20
- 51:47During the regular season, Strach will roll the ball, a 25 yard try
- 51:52And give three more points to Miami
- 51:57They've taken a bad edge off each of the turnovers by San Diego
- 52:01And we have 7.45 left in the half
- 52:06A 25 yard field goal by Ubi Von Scharman makes the score 24 to nothing and let us take time out
- 52:14Eight months ago and you never could have done it
- 52:16Eight months ago it looked like so much electronic spaghetti
- 52:20Now you can read the wiring like a road map and you've spotted the malfunction a mile away
- 52:25You're 21 Lima, Pershing electronics preparer

- 53:06Move up to SK, the tools built for a lifetime
- 53:12Miami has had the ball 12 minutes longer than San Diego has had it
- 53:171708 to 507
- 53:20Kicking off from our right to our left is Von Scharman
- 53:23James Brooks is deep
- 53:25And the kick is high and off to the right side and Brooks takes it on the 11th
- 53:29To the 15, to the 20 yard line, stumbles, comes out to the 25, to the 30
- 53:33Breaks another tackle and comes out to about the 33 of San Diego
- 53:37But at least they held the ball that time
- 53:39But they've got a long way to go and they're 24 points behind
- 53:43Dan Sheplin with the backer for Miami
- 53:48And this Miami defense should be inspired and well rested, eh?
- 53:52They surely should be
- 53:53They've done exactly what they wanted to do to keep the San Diego offense on the bench
- 53:58And that's where they've spent most of the afternoon so far
- 54:00Muncie is in the backfield with Bouts, Bouts to Muncie, straight up the middle, big yards across the 40
- 54:06Out to the 41 yard line, he got 9 yards
- 54:08Muncie carries for 9
- 54:13And what San Diego wants to do here is get a touchdown before the halftime
- 54:19And then they will be in the game, eh?
- 54:22Yeah, no question about that, but they just can't lose their cool
- 54:25They just have to be patient and do what they thought they could do coming into the ballgame
- 54:30They can just get 7 at a time
- 54:32Second down and 1
- 54:34Here is Bouts passing, looking, throwing, short drop
- 54:39Drop by the tight end, Eric Sheavers
- 54:42And it'll be third down and 1
- 54:47Kellen Winslow is injured today
- 54:51He's in the lineup, but he is hurting with a bad foot
- 54:55And it's third down and 1
- 54:57Sheavers tried to run with the ball before he had it
- 55:06And now San Diego has to get this first down
- 55:09And it's third and 1 from their 41
- 55:11Winslow in motion, a toss to Muncie
- 55:13Muncie's in trouble, but he turns it up and just does get the first down
- 55:17And a flag is down
- 55:21A flag is down as Muncie went wide
- 55:23And here's a penalty coming up against San Diego
- 55:27They're doing everything wrong
- 55:29Now Baumauer was the tackler on the play
- 55:36That stops the clock with 6.44 left in the half
- 55:42They're going to measure to see if they had a first down
- 55:45And then Miami may decline the penalty
- 55:47The ball is at the San Diego 42
- 55:49I think they made the first down, Jack
- 55:51The Muncie really did a good job of getting extra effort
- 55:54And getting the necessary yards for the first down
- 55:56I'll be surprised they don't, but maybe they didn't
- 55:58I don't know, I thought they did
- 56:00They stretch the chains
- 56:04And it would have been a first down
- 56:07But now we'll deal with the flag
- 56:15The referee, Jerry Markbride, is going to mark off a penalty against San Diego
- 56:19All the way back to the San Diego 31
- 56:30Here is a penalty against San Diego
- 56:32Putting the ball at the 31 yard line, making it 3rd and 11
- 56:35Now the thing you have to be careful of, Jack, is you don't make another mistake
- 56:39And give another opportunity with good field position
- 56:41Bounce likely to throw, Winslow is to the right side
- 56:45Back to throw his bounce, 4-man rush
- 56:47He throws out the flag, caught by Muncie, nothing doing
- 56:50Rohn takes him down, well before he got the first down
- 56:53And it's 4th down, and time for San Diego to punt
- 56:57Ernie Rohn, chase the receiver, out of bounds
- 57:03That was a strange throw, wasn't it, trying to get 11 yards?
- 57:06Well, he was harassed, he had to get rid of the football
- 57:08I'm surprised he threw it as well as he did to Muncie
- 57:10He had pressure right in his face and had to get rid of the ball quickly
- 57:136.36 left and a half, so ample time for Miami with Tom Vigorito back
- 57:19To take the punt and do some more damage
- 57:22Unless San Diego tries some trickery here with the ball at their 36
- 57:27They probably won't, the punter is Maury Buford
- 57:30He's kicking for the second time, takes the snap and kicks it
- 57:35Hangs it high, and there will be good coverage on Vigorito
- 57:38He's driven back to the 15, goes back to the 13, back to the 10
- 57:42And he is hit at the 14 and brought down there
- 57:46Tom Vigorito returned the punt to the Miami 13 yard line
- 57:50And Woody Lowe made the tackle
- 57:52We have 6.22 left and a half, the Dolphins had the ball
- 57:55They lead 24 to nothing, and we'll be back in just a moment

- 59:04Hank Strand and Jack Buck with you from the Orange Bowl in Miami
- 59:086.22 left and a half, Dolphins 24, San Diego nothing
- 59:12Dolphins have the ball at their own 14-yard line first down
- 59:15Next Saturday and Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd
- 59:18The NFL Conference Championship game and the AFC Conference Championship game
- 59:23Don't miss them, there's something special next weekend
- 59:26And later today at 3.45 Eastern Time, Green Bay and Dallas
- 59:30You'll hear it on CBS Radio
- 59:32First down Miami
- 59:35And here is a handoff to Nathan
- 59:37Nathan comes across out to the 20-yard line
- 59:40Kind of looked like there was a false start
- 59:42There is a flag thrown
- 59:44Woodley is 11 out of 13, 85 yards, two touchdowns
- 59:48And no turnovers by Miami in this game
- 59:51Three by San Diego
- 59:57This penalty will be marked off against the Dolphins
- 1:00:00And it's their second, which they have incurred, back to their nine-yard line
- 1:00:05Talking about penalties, Jack
- 1:00:07The Dolphins come into the game with 30 to 4 penalties for the entire season
- 1:00:11Charges were 64, I think, in large
- 1:00:15The Miami Dolphins probably have half as many penalties as most teams in the league at this stage of the season
- 1:00:21Total offense in this game, Miami 192 yards, San Diego 50 yards
- 1:00:27And San Diego has only snapped the ball 13 times so far, Jack
- 1:00:31First and 15 at their nine
- 1:00:33Here is a delay to Franklin
- 1:00:35Franklin is hit at the line of scrimmage and dives out to the 10, maybe the 11-yard line
- 1:00:41Second down coming up and six minutes coming up
- 1:00:45Tackled by Keith Ferguson
- 1:00:49San Diego's got to come out of this series with good field position
- 1:00:54And come out of it with a touchdown or some points, Jack, to get back into this game
- 1:00:59Well, the last time they had the ball, the penalties slowed them down and they had to punt
- 1:01:07Now from the 11-yard line, second down and 13 for the home team
- 1:01:14On second down, Woodland or Franklin in a fumble
- 1:01:17And it is recovered inside the 10 by Miami
- 1:01:22Miami, I think they got it back
- 1:01:25Miami got it back and it's stirred down and San Diego missed their biggest opportunity of the day
- 1:01:30Yeah, that was their opportunity to make something happen and get some points on the board quickly
- 1:01:34But they blew it
- 1:01:38Miami recovered
- 1:01:41One of the big linemen tried to pick it up and run with it
- 1:01:43They all do the same thing, they tried
- 1:01:45Gary Johnson should have been satisfied to flop on the ball and take it on the seven
- 1:01:50Instead he tried to pick it up and run with it and be a hero and Miami still has possession
- 1:01:54It is third down and 16 at the Miami 8-yard line
- 1:01:59Woodley in the shotgun, hands it off on the running plate and Nathan
- 1:02:03Nathan is bumped outside and taken down at the 12 and it's time for the Dolphins to punt
- 1:02:11Punt coming up
- 1:02:13We'll be down to about the 425 mark when they finally kick it away
- 1:02:20And Johnson of the Chargers, the defensive lineman
- 1:02:24Just fallen on the ball, it would have been first and goal for San Diego
- 1:02:27On the seven
- 1:02:29Now here's a punt by Tom Oroz and this is his second of the day
- 1:02:34James Brooks inside his 45
- 1:02:37Line drive kick and it bounces at midfield, Brooks takes it on the 47
- 1:02:42Returns to the 45 and the Chargers will go from the Miami 43 yard line
- 1:02:49Now here's a late flag going down
- 1:02:56A late flag was thrown and the kick return took it down to the Miami 43
- 1:03:02Looks like it's against Miami
- 1:03:04Personal foul, face mask against Miami, that will help the Chargers
- 1:03:16Drops the clock with 4.07 left and a half
- 1:03:21And this is a major face mask penalty and they put it at the 28
- 1:03:25San Diego is at the 28
- 1:03:30First down and a time out has been called
- 1:03:34We have 4.07 left in the half
- 1:03:37Well even if you can't go to the Super Bowl this year

- 1:04:15This message furnished by the National Football League
- 1:04:18Trailing 24 to nothing
- 1:04:21San Diego's Bouts is going to pass
- 1:04:24Look, San Croes and in the end zone, incomplete
- 1:04:28Incomplete
- 1:04:30He tried to get it to West Cammer and there was pretty tough coverage
- 1:04:33The defendant's going to hurt him a lot, Jack
- 1:04:35Winslow, I'm watching him, he's really hurting
- 1:04:38He cannot run full speed, he's in the lineup
- 1:04:41Doing the best he can but he's not able to perform like he normally does
- 1:04:44And that's going to hurt San Diego
- 1:04:46They talk about Dan Bouts being so intelligent and quarterback
- 1:04:49And Kellan Winslow are the same
- 1:04:51But the two of them operate on the same wavelength
- 1:04:54And they are devastating
- 1:04:57They can be devastating, the ball's at the 28th, second and tenth
- 1:05:01Four minutes left in the half
- 1:05:03Another pass played by Fouts
- 1:05:05He flicks, he throws, and it's dropped
- 1:05:08It's dropped by Muncie
- 1:05:11At about the 25 yard line it'll be third and down
- 1:05:15Bob Baumauer and A.J. Dewey
- 1:05:17We're after the San Diego quarterback
- 1:05:22And they can't get a rowing at all
- 1:05:25I would think, Jack, you know, with the way Winslow is
- 1:05:29They'd be much better off to go with three wide receivers instead of the tight end
- 1:05:33Because they're not going to get much out of Winslow, he just can't make it
- 1:05:37Winslow lines up on the right side
- 1:05:41Third and ten for Bouts
- 1:05:43Miami is flitching, the blitz is picked up
- 1:05:46The pass is thrown, it's caught
- 1:05:48Inside the five, touchdown
- 1:05:50Touchdown for San Diego
- 1:05:53Charlie Joyner caught it and went in
- 1:05:56He took a hit at about the ten
- 1:05:58And scored on that third down pass play
- 1:06:03Big hole in the middle
- 1:06:05And he had enough time to throw it, delivered it right on the money
- 1:06:08But that's what San Diego can do to you if they have the
- 1:06:11If they have possession of the football
- 1:06:14Well, they're on the board and it is 24 to 6
- 1:06:18And of course the extra point try is extremely important with that looser holding
- 1:06:22And Bernerska kicking
- 1:06:24He made 32 out of 34 this year
- 1:06:27He gets it, oh good, he missed it
- 1:06:30Bernerska missed it and that changed his things around considerably here
- 1:06:3524 to 6 with 3.46 left and a half
- 1:06:40Well that's unusual, he gets a lot of practice because of the numerous scores that San Diego gets
- 1:06:47But this one was off to the right
- 1:06:50And it's 24 to 6, brother you just can't take those extra points for granted can you?
- 1:06:55No you really can't, and you can't try to steer them through there either
- 1:06:58You can't try to aim them, you've got to pump them right through there like you do a long field goal
- 1:07:02Well there are nine members of the AFC Pro Bowl squad here today
- 1:07:06Wes Chandler, Doug Wilkerson, Kellan Winslow, Dan Fouts, Chuck Munson, Gary Johnson of San Diego
- 1:07:12From Miami, Bob Kuchenberg in place of Ed Newman who had knee surgery
- 1:07:16Andre Franklin and Bob Baumauer
- 1:07:18There's something special and we'll have the Pro Bowl game on CBS Radio Sunday, February 6th from Honolulu, Hawaii
- 1:07:24It's something special
- 1:07:29Extra point try was missed and it's 24 to 6
- 1:07:34And favor of Miami with 3.46 left in the half
- 1:07:40Bolton Walker is back to get this kickoff from Benerska
- 1:07:44We're looking forward to seeing our good friend down home in Hawaii
- 1:07:48Here is the kick, it is high and deep and Walker takes it on the 7th
- 1:07:53To the 10, 15, 20 yard line and did not get to the 25
- 1:07:57He squirts loose for a moment but still didn't get to the 25 yard line
- 1:08:01Tackle by Ray Preston
- 1:08:05That trip to Honolulu will be very, very enjoyable
- 1:08:09Before that we'll have two games next weekend as they determine the Super Bowl teams
- 1:08:14We'll be at Washington and either at Miami or at San Diego
- 1:08:21Can't get over that 90,000 crowd in Los Angeles yesterday for the Raider game
- 1:08:25There it is, they sold 36,000 tickets I think at the gate, isn't that amazing?
- 1:08:30It is, that's a fake crowd, the ball is out to the 24
- 1:08:34And they can't afford any mistakes or the momentum will slip away
- 1:08:39Here's Woodley passing, first down, thrown, caught out near the 30 yard line
- 1:08:43That's where the play ends and some good yards
- 1:08:50Not enough for a first down, Tony Nathan caught another
- 1:08:53And a pick up of 7 yards
- 1:08:583.10 left in the half
- 1:09:03It's been a long second quarter, Hank
- 1:09:06They're spending a lot, Miami's using a triple wing formation, Jack, a tight end
- 1:09:10A tight end on the outside and a flanker on the outside of him
- 1:09:14And a split end on the other side and the back, in the backfield
- 1:09:17And they get him rotated one way and they throw on the other side and they've done a good job with it
- 1:09:20Hardy in motion and a toss to Nathan, Nathan coming outside, Hardy with a block first down
- 1:09:25To the 40, out to the 43, when he saw that daylight he put it in overdrive
- 1:09:30And Tony Nathan, boomed out to the 43 of San Diego before Johnson and Fox tackled in
- 1:09:38Nathan is having an exemplary afternoon
- 1:09:42He ran to the Miami 43
- 1:09:45And now we have 2.20 left in the half
- 1:09:54And the Dolphins are ready to go again
- 1:09:57Woodley is under center, back to throw on first down
- 1:10:01He airs it out long downfield, the man is there, Cephalo is at first and goal at the 4 yard line
- 1:10:09Jimmy Cephalo, beat Andre Young and Woodley threw the ball about 60 yards in the air for a first and goal of 52 yard game
- 1:10:22And he put a run on the money
- 1:10:25He was throwing on first down, eh? Yep
- 1:10:30Cephalo to the 4
- 1:10:33And Cephalo really does not have great speed, he has terrific quickness
- 1:10:37And fast hands, but he ran right down the sideline, the ball was right on top
- 1:10:42159 left in the half with a score 24-6 in favor of Miami, let's take time out
- 1:11:12Music
- 1:11:35Music
- 1:11:48The San Diego Chargers are now in a position where they could quit
- 1:11:53I'm not saying that they're going to hang, but they've been hit with everything and they could hold and just fly away
- 1:11:59No they won't, they won't do that Jack, I guarantee they won't do that
- 1:12:03The score is 24-6 in favor of Miami
- 1:12:09And they have a first and goal at the 4 yard line with a big back like Andre Franklin in there
- 1:12:15A 52 yard pass play to Jimmy Cephalo steps this one up
- 1:12:20Bennett and Franklin are in the backfield
- 1:12:24And three tight ends at the powerful formation
- 1:12:27Something right possibly
- 1:12:29Here is Bennett being hit at the line of scrimmage and driven back a yard
- 1:12:34Tried a little misdirection play Hank and it didn't work
- 1:12:37Yeah, they were leaning that side, it looked like they were going to run right and they came back to the other side and it didn't work
- 1:12:42Bennett carried and lost 2 yards to the 6
- 1:12:46That's what happens sometimes when you outsmart yourself, you try to be involved in strategy instead of just sticking it right in there with something that you know is going to work and pound the way at them and make something happen up front and go
- 1:12:56A minute and a half left and a half in the clock running if and when Miami scores San Diego will have little or no time to do anything about the big deficit
- 1:13:04Tony Nathan comes back into the lineup
- 1:13:06As does Nat Moore, here is Woodley going to pass, looking, throwing, ends out and complete
- 1:13:12He threw it into heavy coverage and the ball was batted away by Williams, Mike Williams on the corner
- 1:13:17Batted it away from the intended receiver Marty the tight end
- 1:13:21Third and goal from the 6
- 1:13:23And if San Diego can cross Miami to settle for a field goal that would help
- 1:13:29I can't understand why they're trying to be so fancy down here, they've done such a good job with Franklin just banging it in there
- 1:13:34I don't know why they're trying to be doing some unusual things instead of doing what they've done real well
- 1:13:40And they stop the clock with 1.12 left and a half with an end zone pass
- 1:13:45Third down and goal from the 6 Woodley's in the shotgun, the double wing formation, Vigorito is into the game
- 1:13:51And he takes a snap and throws and it's dropped to the 5 yard line by Vigorito
- 1:13:57They're hoping he can catch it and run in and complete the field goal unit on the team
- 1:14:01Boy they tied the bullet there, talking about San Diego, they're lucky if they just get out of here with 3
- 1:14:06That would make the score 27 to 6 and put them 21 points behind
- 1:14:10This will be a field goal drive by Von Schaumann, he kicked one earlier of 25 yards
- 1:14:22San Diego have only a minute and 9 to do something about the score, this will be a 24 yard drive
- 1:14:32Strach is the holder, gets it down and the kick is up and 3 more for Miami
- 1:14:42A 24 yard field goal makes the score 27 to 6 in favor of the Dolphins
- 1:14:50And I think it was pertinent that they were throwing the ball on first down despite their lead earlier of 24 to 6
- 1:14:57They didn't sit on it, no they didn't and of course the big play was the beautiful strike by Woodley
- 1:15:03To Cephalo to put the ball down there in good scoring position
- 1:15:06105 left and a half with a score 27 to 6 in favor of Miami, let's take time out
- 1:15:11The average car may be getting smaller but the average American is getting taller
- 1:15:16That's why the small, efficient Buick Skyhawk doesn't forget Buick's biggest fans
- 1:15:20With an optional 1.8 liter engine, it offers an EPA estimated MPG of 28, use estimated MPG for comparisons
- 1:15:28Actual mileage may be different but inside there's luxury and room for even those with above average dimensions
- 1:15:34The 1983 Buick Skyhawk, like a lot of people, you'll fit right in
- 1:15:39Ben Musburger will be joining us at halftime and have a preview of the Packer Cowboy game which is coming up in a talk with Max McGee
- 1:15:46You remember him? I've never been able to forget him
- 1:15:51As Hank Strand's Kansas City team was in that first Super Bowl game against Green Bay
- 1:15:57Here's a kickoff to Brooks to the 14 to the 20 and a wallop before he gets to the 25
- 1:16:02He's tackled at the 24 by Jim Jensen who is a quarterback and a special teams player
- 1:16:08102 remaining in the half and the ball is the San Diego 24
- 1:16:14They could even score on this position, Hank
- 1:16:18They could, they got a lot of time, they got three timeouts left
- 1:16:21And if Miami decides to play it soft and give them the short stuff, they could just go right down the field and do some business
- 1:16:27Miami shows a freeman front
- 1:16:30The double on the outside receiver, something in the middle should be there
- 1:16:33Here's a delay to Muncie, he comes outside to the 30, runs by people and gets the first down out to the 40 yard line
- 1:16:40A run by Muncie to the 40 and timeout with 53 seconds left in the half
- 1:16:45Tackled by Blackwood and Rhone, mild Blackwood that is
- 1:16:51Two timeouts left for the Chargers
- 1:16:57A gain of 16 yards
- 1:17:01Memories of Silver Bowl 16, a review of the 1982 season and the players strike
- 1:17:06The moments of glory at the Pro Football Hall of Fame
- 1:17:10When Elliott captures it all in his Super Bowl 17 special
- 1:17:13Here comes your way, Super Bowl weekend, Saturday, January 29th and Sunday the 30th
- 1:17:18Something special from CBS Radio
- 1:17:21Well, what do you think of that game coming up, Hank, Green Bay or Dallas?
- 1:17:25I think a lot of people think that Dallas is going to win the game, Jack
- 1:17:29But I really think that Green Bay is capable of doing an excellent job
- 1:17:34And I think it's going to be a terrific game, who's going to win, how do you know, the way things happen
- 1:17:38But I think it's going to be a great game
- 1:17:41As we're down here coming into this game, they were talking about the maturing of David Woodlake
- 1:17:47And he certainly has enhanced his image with a 13 out of 17 performance to this point
- 1:17:52144 yards and two touchdowns and I thought it was significant that when they were ahead 24 to 6
- 1:17:58Miami was throwing the ball on first down
- 1:18:00Well, they're calling a play from the sideline and they evidently felt they could do something long
- 1:18:05And they did exactly that with Cepolo and that kind of surprised us in him, Dave
- 1:18:08Because again, he doesn't have that great speed
- 1:18:10First down San Diego at their own 40
- 1:18:14Bounce under center, back to throw, three man rush
- 1:18:17Steps up and throws to the sideline and it is incomplete and the play goes down
- 1:18:22They try to get the ball out to the wide receiver, Dwight Scales
- 1:18:26Pass interference, good call
- 1:18:28Pass interference against Miami, eh?
- 1:18:30Yes, against Miami it was a good call
- 1:18:33He hit it before he had a chance to make the catch when the ball was in the air
- 1:18:36Good call on the part of the official
- 1:18:38Glenn Blackwood was the offender
- 1:18:43And the ball is at the Miami 40
- 1:18:47Another first down, that stopped the clock with 46 seconds left to the hat
- 1:18:51Chargers trying to come back
- 1:18:53Three man rush, pass play foul, steps up and jumps short
- 1:18:58Caught by Winslow
- 1:19:00And then it is ruled, incomplete at the 30 yard line
- 1:19:03He caught it, bobbled it
- 1:19:05And then the Miami player picked it up and it hit the ground
- 1:19:08And it's ruled incomplete
- 1:19:10Incomplete
- 1:19:12Winslow caught it, it was hit
- 1:19:14Now there goes a flag
- 1:19:16The flag was just now thrown and perhaps something coming up against Miami
- 1:19:21Bounced through the ball, Winslow caught it, was hit, dropped it
- 1:19:26Before it hit the ground it was touched by a Miami player and then he dropped it
- 1:19:30It was ruled incomplete
- 1:19:32Incomplete
- 1:19:34And then a late flag was thrown and are they going to deal with that now?
- 1:19:40The headlinesman has a complaint to register with the referee
- 1:19:44And they're going to mark off unsportsmanlike conduct against Miami
- 1:19:51They don't need that do they?
- 1:19:53No they don't
- 1:19:55I thought Jim Poole, the back judge, number 92, made a good call on the pass interference just a minute ago Jack
- 1:20:02And also on the pumble, I had the glasses on at Hank and he didn't catch the ball, neither one of them had the ball
- 1:20:06No you're right
- 1:20:08Number 58, defense
- 1:20:11Here is a call against Kim Boekeper of Miami and they put the ball down at the Miami 25
- 1:20:21And we still have 39 seconds left in the half
- 1:20:25Here's a delay to Muncie
- 1:20:27And Muncie is taken down at the 23
- 1:20:30Well with only a three man rush
- 1:20:32It was tough with that draw play to work and the Chargers called time out
- 1:20:36Unusual call Hank for such a throwing team as the Chargers
- 1:20:41They just made a guess, you know, with a three man line the linebackers are dropping off so fast
- 1:20:46You got some big seams in there
- 1:20:48And you figure if you might catch them, where the linebackers are very deep
- 1:20:52But you got a good chance to make a big play with the draw play
- 1:20:54They guessed wrong and didn't get as much as they thought they might
- 1:20:57Now we have only 33 seconds left in the half and the Chargers have one time out remaining
- 1:21:02The score is the Dolphins 27, the Chargers 6
- 1:21:07And they have second down and eight
- 1:21:12It's a bright sunny day here, few clouds in the sky, temperature 63 degrees
- 1:21:18It was expected to rise to the 70 mark
- 1:21:20A little cooler than most people enjoy it down here in the Miami area
- 1:21:25But better than it is in a lot of parts of the country
- 1:21:28It was surprisingly nice in Washington though yesterday, wasn't it?
- 1:21:32We thought we were going to get a lot of snow, keeping out of it in good shape
- 1:21:36And Washington won that game
- 1:21:38They'll host the winner of the Green Bay Dallas game next Saturday
- 1:21:4112.15 Eastern time is broadcast time next Saturday, we'll have the story for you
- 1:21:46And Hank and I will either come back here to Miami or go to San Diego
- 1:21:51I take a second and eight, Jack, I take three pops into that end zone
- 1:21:57Try to get a big play, a touchdown or else maybe a pass interference
- 1:22:00And preferably to the corners and maybe something down the middle
- 1:22:04Because they're double covering the outside people
- 1:22:06The middle could be open or the corners could be open on outside moves
- 1:22:10On this drive Muncie ran to the 40, to San Diego 40
- 1:22:15And interference called it the Miami 40
- 1:22:18Then the young sportsman like Conda called to the 25, now it's at the 23
- 1:22:23The 25 of the 54 yards in this drive has been on penalty
- 1:22:28Bounce back looking for the big play, sets up and throws
- 1:22:31Down into the end zone and it is caught inside the 5
- 1:22:35First and goal at the one yard line, Hank you were looking for it and there it was
- 1:22:39And Winslow who caught it comes away limping even more heavily
- 1:22:42By surprising, you know, they had him covered pretty well
- 1:22:45But that was a place to throw the ball to take a chance
- 1:22:48He ran inside and then ran to the outside and a good leaping catch by Chandler
- 1:22:55And Winslow came down to try to help block Chandler into the end zone
- 1:22:59But the players stopped at the one first and goal
- 1:23:02Now what do you do with only one time out remaining?
- 1:23:06The ball at the one
- 1:23:07They had a sweep outside
- 1:23:09Here is Muncie, touchdown, a flag is down
- 1:23:13Muncie went into the end zone but a flag came down
- 1:23:18And a call, a touchdown stands, the penalty is against Miami
- 1:23:22With 22 seconds left in the half
- 1:23:24The Chargers have given indications they're going to make a game out of it
- 1:23:28It is 27 to 12
- 1:23:32And the one yard run by Chuck Muncie
- 1:23:36Good blocking in the right side by Masick the center and Ed White the right guard
- 1:23:40Russ Washington the all-pro right tackle
- 1:23:44So the Chargers are in the game
- 1:23:46Now the extra point try
- 1:23:49Vernerschke missed one earlier
- 1:23:56And here's the kick, it is good and that makes it 27 to 13
- 1:24:03So there are only two touchdowns and two extra points behind
- 1:24:06And it's not going to be the blowout that it appeared it might be
- 1:24:09No way, now if they have possession of the ball Jack this team has got a lot of pride, a lot of honor
- 1:24:13And they're going to come back and fight you and they know, they just haven't had a chance to do much
- 1:24:17They haven't had the ball very much and they haven't had very good field position
- 1:24:21But they're going to hang in there and tough, this is going to be a good game before it's over with
- 1:24:23And once more we have seen the three man rush hurt the defensive unit
- 1:24:27I know it's good to have all that deep coverage back there but you still have to arrest that passer somewhat
- 1:24:33You're right, you have to make a decision, you're going to drop back eight and rush three
- 1:24:37That's what they elected to do and really the defensive back was right there
- 1:24:41Except the Chandler who is a great leaper, they threw the ball right at the perfect place
- 1:24:45Right on the outside and they make him up with a big play
- 1:24:49Here's the kickoff by Vernerschke with only 22 seconds remaining in the half
- 1:24:55I bet if you asked the quarterback if he would prefer the three man rush
- 1:25:00The answer would be yes, talking about the offensive quarterback
- 1:25:04Here's the kickoff being taken inside the five and being returned by Fulton Walker
- 1:25:09And he goes down at the 14 yard line
- 1:25:12Walker was just happy to fall down inside the 15 at the 14 with 17 seconds left
- 1:25:17And Hank's power covering
- 1:25:19Crazy game last year, I think the Chargers when they hit 24 to nothing had to fight for their life, right?
- 1:25:25At the end of the first quarter
- 1:25:27Yeah and now just the reverse was true and now Sandia is coming back like gangbusters
- 1:25:31But these are two very good football teams, well drilled, well coached, good personnel
- 1:25:35And it's going to be a very exciting second half
- 1:25:38And an interference call and an unsportsmanlike conduct call has hurt Miami in the second quarter
- 1:25:45Now let's see if they just run the clock out
- 1:25:48That's all they're going to do, Woodley takes the snap and that will be our halftime score
- 1:25:5427 to 13
- 1:25:58The Miami fans have got to enjoy it but they also have to be a bit apprehensive about the momentum generated by the Chargers late in the second quarter
- 1:26:07Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network
- 1:26:13It's one o'clock with 42 degrees at WKSI El Dorado
- 1:26:18Well the gun is sounded ending the first half here in the Orange Bowl with a score of the Dolphins 27 the Chargers 13
- 1:26:30Art in riches
- 1:26:34And San Diego will receive the second half kickoff
- 1:26:38Miami and Von Schaumann will be kicking off from our right to our left
- 1:26:42And if San Diego burns up the territory here in their first possession we'll have some fireworks here in late January
- 1:26:50And Miami has to really do a good job of coverage on this kickoff
- 1:26:55James Brooks is back to get it, he's averaged 22 plus for kickoff return
- 1:27:02And we wait for the referee to give us the go ahead
- 1:27:07Meanwhile later today at 3.45 Eastern Time it'll be Green Bay at Dallas, Texas Stadium, CBS Radio, Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly
- 1:27:18Then next weekend the NFC Championship game at Washington against either Dallas or Green Bay at 12.15 Eastern Time
- 1:27:26And at 4.45 Eastern Time, New York at either Miami or San Diego, the kick's a short one taken by one of the up and in
- 1:27:32And the return is across the 35 out near the 40 yard line
- 1:27:37Eric Siebers took it
- 1:27:39His left foot slipped in the process of kicking the ball and that's why he kicked the bad one
- 1:27:44And Eric Siebers, the tight end, caught the ball and returned it to the 37 of San Diego
- 1:27:52So here we go at the start of this second half
- 1:27:56We'll mention again that Kevin Winslow is not full speed, he is playing and he's on the left wing at the moment
- 1:28:01And in motion, back to throw his spouts on first down, swings it out to Muncie, a one man screen
- 1:28:07He runs by Rhone, he runs down the sideline into Miami territory and not bumped out until he got to the 45
- 1:28:13Lyle Blackwood bumped him out
- 1:28:15That's an option, they run over, they're either going to throw the ball to the flank or down field or to the back in the play
- 1:28:20Depending on how the linebacker covers, the linebacker took a deep drop, they threw the ball to Muncie and of course Muncie on a one on one
- 1:28:27And that open area is ready to murder
- 1:28:30He ran right by Ernest Rhone, the inside linebacker, bounced off him
- 1:28:35And it's a first down at the Miami 45 for the Chargers
- 1:28:39Doug Wilkins at 63, really made a great block
- 1:28:42Here's Muncie running right, needing some blocks, Gordon gets him, stops him, takes him down and he loses the yard on the play
- 1:28:48Larry Gordon came from the other side of the field to corral Chuck Muncie
- 1:28:52A counter play, a counter play is tough from just one back in the backfield, you're not going to pull anybody
- 1:28:58They try to slow him down, get him moving one way and then go back the other
- 1:29:01No success on the play, the defense did a good job of responding and as you mentioned
- 1:29:05Gordon came all the way over from the back side to make the back
- 1:29:10Second down and 11 as a result, Chandler comes to the right
- 1:29:15Winslow is to the right, Joyner to the left
- 1:29:18Siebers, the tight end is in motion, a pass play, Fout steps up and throws, incomplete
- 1:29:23Trying to get it to Joyner, he was covered by Gerald Small, incomplete, third and 11
- 1:29:33Third down and 11, the winner of this one stays alive and will play the Jets
- 1:29:38And the loser is eliminated, they'll take their $16,000 and go home
- 1:29:43Meanwhile the winner is assured of at least $18,000 more, for a man
- 1:29:48Chandler left, Joyner left, White scales, the added wide receiver
- 1:29:55Third down and Fout sets up to throw, has time, throws left sideline and incomplete
- 1:30:03And Emphal sort of walked it with the wind, I don't know whether he's throwing it away or the wind just drifted it out of bounds
- 1:30:11It looks like he might be throwing it away and I don't know why, in that situation with third and long he's throwing it away
- 1:30:16You think he's hanging there and trying to hit somebody that was open on the play, the receiver that time was covered very well
- 1:30:22And it's punting time and Tom Bigarito goes back to await the kick from Buford
- 1:30:28Buford punted twice, a 49 yard average in the first half, so despite the good kickoff return
- 1:30:36And the big play by Muncie on the first play from Scrimmage, the Dolphins have stopped the Chargers
- 1:30:41Now can the Chargers stop the Dolphins, that's the question of the afternoon, the kick by Buford is high
- 1:30:46Inside the 10 they let it bounce and it goes into the end zone and it will come out to the 20 yard line
- 1:30:52Miami will take over for the first time in the second half at their own 20 with 13.43 left in the third quarter
- 1:31:00With the score Miami 27, San Diego 13, let's take time out
- 1:31:04If we told you here about the mileage you get with a Honda Civic four door wagon
- 1:31:10We wouldn't have time to tell you about its generous interior space
- 1:31:14That it comes loaded with practical standard equipment and that it's one of the lowest priced wagons in America
- 1:31:21So spend a little time with your Honda dealer and learn about its mileage, our time is up
- 1:31:34Okay you called to play TV Mystery Bay, yes we did, for one million dollars turn on your TV and identify today's TV Mystery Bay

- 1:31:46You know Quasar is the name to call for dependable quality product, now Quasar is the name for great savings
- 1:31:53It's the Quasar annual fantastic factory sale and it's going on now at your participating Quasar dealer
- 1:32:00Miami Dolphins fans are trying to generate a little excitement here for their offensive unit David Woodley and company
- 1:32:10Woodley in the first half with 13 out of 17, no turnovers by Miami in the first 30 minutes
- 1:32:19And they can't sit on it and leave, they have to stay on the attack and continue to make things happen and do what they did well in the first half
- 1:32:25Here is a give to Andra Franklin finding big running room up the middle and across the 30 for a first down
- 1:32:31To the 31 yard line, 11 yard run by Franklin in the offensive line of the Dolphins, Stephenson, Caves, Kuchenberg, Giesler and Lexo continues to dominate
- 1:32:45First down for Miami, Dario Harris to the right and Nett Moore to the left and on first down Woodley is going to throw and he throws it right into the hands of Fox
- 1:33:08Fox for San Diego returns it inside the 40 yard line as Woodley showed a great deal of indecision and threw it right to Tim Fox who intercepted four during the season
- 1:33:20He threw a bad pass, he threw it falling away, had no step and throw movement at all, threw it way over the top and that's exactly what San Diego needs
- 1:33:27They need good field position like Miami got in the first half, now they have it, the important thing however is to take advantage of it
- 1:33:34They're really two plays, just two plays away from getting back right in this football game
- 1:33:40Now the first turnover by Miami, Tim Fox came away with the ball and returned it to the Dolphins 37
- 1:33:48And on first down, Fouts is going to pass, what's new, here's the throw, short caught by Sebers to tie it in, pummel the ball, the pass is ruled incomplete
- 1:33:57Sebers was really belted by Glenn Blackwood and what would have been a gain of about four or five yards becomes an incomplete pass
- 1:34:09He was really pumped, he got a shot, he really did, better him than me, I always say, that's right
- 1:34:15It stops the clock with 12.50 left in this third quarter, no scoring, no score, Miami leading 27-13, second and ten, here's Fouts on a pitch to Muncie running right
- 1:34:28And Rohn meets him, gets some help, tackles him inside the 35, Kalowski the extra back was also there along with Lyle Blackwood
- 1:34:36And Muncie picked up four yards, third and six, Fouts is only six out of 15, the big figure there is not the six, it's the 15
- 1:34:47Usually you will have thrown the ball about 30 times at this point in the game, yeah but it's hard to throw when you're sitting on a bench
- 1:34:53Third down and six, at the 33 yard line of Miami, Fouts being rushed and being sacked back beyond the 40 yard line
- 1:35:07Fouts is sacked back at the 42 yard line on third down, they just came pouring in led by Doug Fetters and A.J. Dewey
- 1:35:20They got to what I mentioned earlier, you have to put middle pressure on Fouts, outside pressure doesn't bother him very much
- 1:35:26But they got the good inside pressure on them that time, lifting the linebacker, A.J. Dewey, and they throw him for a loss
- 1:35:36So after intercepting the ball, the Chargers can get nothing done, and in to punt is Maury Buford
- 1:35:44He's a rookie out of Texas Tech, Tom Ziggurito is back to get it, and Buford will aim for the sideline
- 1:35:50The second time that Fouts has been sacked in the game, Buford takes the snap, there's no pressure and he hangs it straight up in the air
- 1:35:58And a fair catch is called for and taken at about the 19 yard line
- 1:36:05And Miami will go from there, Kozlowski caught it, it was only a 23 yard punt
- 1:36:11And now the Dolphin offense comes back out of the field, the score remains 27-13 San Diego
- 1:36:17It really hurts when you have good field position plus 37 and come away with nothing
- 1:36:22We'll be back in just a moment

- 1:37:22One, two, three, K and Y
- 1:37:27The ball has been marked at the Miami 20s, the Dolphins turned it over on an interception, their first turnover of the day just a moment ago, but they have it right back
- 1:37:36Two minutes later, they got it right back again
- 1:37:39Almost a minute and a half later, they got it right back
- 1:37:4211.39 left in the third quarter
- 1:37:45Harris and Sepulow come to the left
- 1:37:50They haven't thrown the ball to D'Oreal Harris all day, Sepulow in motion
- 1:37:55Here's a gift to Andra Franklin, and he gets good yards
- 1:37:58He is out across the 27, and a very good tackle was made by Woody Lowe
- 1:38:04And Franklin was just set to put it into gear when Woody Lowe dropped it, but he gained seven
- 1:38:11Anytime you control first down like Miami has done it, especially with the run, you wind up with second and three, second and two, second and four
- 1:38:22Well, you're way ahead of the defense
- 1:38:25Second and three right now
- 1:38:28Tony Nathan is in the backfield with Franklin
- 1:38:32The ball at the Miami 36, Franklin trying to find running room up the middle, fails to get the first down, but it'll be third and short for Miami
- 1:38:40Swarmed by Gary Johnson and Keith Ferguson
- 1:38:45Keltcher is not in the game now either, Jack. I don't know whether he's injured or what's wrong, but he is not in the game
- 1:38:52Gary Johnson is playing the tackle position 79
- 1:38:57It is third down and one
- 1:39:00In there is Wilbur Young, Leroy Jones, Gary Johnson, and Keith Ferguson in the four-man front that San Diego uses
- 1:39:08Yeah, Wilbur Young is playing for Keltcher
- 1:39:11Third down in the yard, eye formation
- 1:39:14Here is Franklin and he hurdles out near the 30-yard line
- 1:39:18And let's see where they mark the ball down
- 1:39:21Great play, great play by Wilbur Young, number 99, playing the left tackle position
- 1:39:25He didn't make the first down on that third down run, did not make it
- 1:39:29Only because of the great play by Wilbur Young, and we drafted Wilbur, you know, number two, from William Penn College years ago when I was at Kansas City
- 1:39:38They're going to measure, it'll come up short
- 1:39:41And then Miami, if they don't want to do anything drastic, will punt the ball with 10-12 left in the third quarter
- 1:39:48It was really not only good penetration, a good tackle, but a strong tackle by Young, Wilbur Young
- 1:39:54And he pulled Franklin to the turf
- 1:39:58It's fourth down and Tom Oroz is in the game to kick
- 1:40:02O-R-O-S-Z out of Ohio State
- 1:40:07Back to get it is James Brooks
- 1:40:10Running back from Auburn, standing at his 30-yard line
- 1:40:17Score at the half was 27-13, Miami, and it's still a 14-point dolphin lead
- 1:40:25We wait for the snap
- 1:40:28By Bob Cuchenberg
- 1:40:30And he talked about Oroz, he was a punt, pass, and kick champion when he was 10
- 1:40:34He goes with the ball and he'll get the first down across the 35-to-40-yard line
- 1:40:40And the Miami fence and the Miami crowd goes wild
- 1:40:43San Diego did not cover it at all
- 1:40:46And Bob Dregger tackled him into Miami 40
- 1:40:52He took one look and took off
- 1:40:54To say this, Hank, it was a really decisive
- 1:40:56Yes, it was
- 1:41:00And he was an all-state quarterback in high school, so he's a good athlete
- 1:41:04And he ran to the Miami 40-yard line and then held the ball when he was hit
- 1:41:08So the Dolphins hang onto the pigskin
- 1:41:12And of course that's important when you're playing San Diego
- 1:41:159-10 left in the third quarter
- 1:41:18And on first down, a pass play by Woodley
- 1:41:22Oroz and it is caught
- 1:41:24It is caught at the 45-yard line of San Diego by Duriel Harris
- 1:41:29His first of the day and a great throw by Woodley
- 1:41:34Boy, he's got a great gun and when he can step and throw, he puts it right on the money
- 1:41:39And that time they licked Mike Williams, the right cornerback
- 1:41:44That run was really something
- 1:41:47Out of confirmation
- 1:41:49San Diego didn't cover it at all, they all peeled back
- 1:41:52They all peeled back and you know, Miami has done the same thing
- 1:41:56San Diego could do the same thing against Miami, could have, I don't know what they'll do now
- 1:42:00But they could have, because San Diego has been doing, Miami has been doing the same thing
- 1:42:03From the 45ers, a gift to Franklin, inside, outside, and he gets some yards
- 1:42:07And he unloads on the tackler down at the 40-yard line
- 1:42:10He got 6 to the 39 and Mike Williams stopped him
- 1:42:136-yard run by Franklin
- 1:42:15He paid, Mike Williams really paid for that stop
- 1:42:18He really got a shot high on the numbers
- 1:42:22It could be that that run out of confirmation will change this entire game around
- 1:42:26It looks like it's giving them the spark that they seemingly lost, Jack
- 1:42:30I'm talking about Miami, they seemed like they went down a little flat
- 1:42:34Now they're starting to come back again after that punt run by Oro's
- 1:42:38Franklin is rushed for 64 yards on 16 carries
- 1:42:41Nathan, 69 yards on 11 carries
- 1:42:44So the two have been devastating
- 1:42:47Second down and four, Hardy goes in motion, here is a toss to Nathan running right
- 1:42:51He's going to throw the ball, he does!
- 1:42:53It's caught inside the 30-yard line
- 1:42:55First down at the 19, Hardy caught it
- 1:42:59Running fast, the half-back pass from Nathan to the tight end, Hardy was then in motion
- 1:43:06Hardy was anchored on the left side, went in motion on the right side, and threw the ball
- 1:43:11Nathan threw the ball right to him in his zone
- 1:43:15First down at the San Diego, 19-yard line
- 1:43:20And if they go in and score, you'll look back at that run out of confirmation by Tom Oro's
- 1:43:27The ball is at the San Diego, 19
- 1:43:31Dolphins already leading by 14
- 1:43:34Woodley to Nathan, Nathan up the middle, Nathan drives for 5 to the 14-yard line
- 1:43:41And the offensive line of the Dolphins is crunching the defense of the visitors
- 1:43:46Bergeson and Bruce Laird made the decal
- 1:43:53Nathan for 5 yards
- 1:43:57We have 7.45 left in the third quarter
- 1:44:03Second and five, Miami, at the San Diego, 14, they're going from our right to our left
- 1:44:08They have Nathan and Franklin in the backfield
- 1:44:11Here's Franklin straight ahead and inside the 10
- 1:44:15First and goal at the 7-yard line
- 1:44:20Once again, the big hole up front, and evidently Jeff Caves who was filling in for Ed Newman must be doing a job
- 1:44:27Yeah, he is, he's coming off in good shape and controlling the defensive tackle, getting them off the ball, getting a good push
- 1:44:35They mark the ball down on the charger, 7
- 1:44:40First and goal
- 1:44:427 minutes left in the third quarter, clock running
- 1:44:46First and goal from the 7
- 1:44:51Boy, look at that middle, that middle is really open as them
- 1:44:54Out of the eye, a toss to the tailback, and Nathan fumbles the ball and San Diego recovers
- 1:45:01A careless fumble by Tony Nathan, recovered by Woody Lowe, he was running the ball with one hand and for no reason he fumbled it at his 18-yard line
- 1:45:11Boy, what a big break for San Diego
- 1:45:15Woody Lowe dived on the ball at the 18, he didn't try to pick it up and run with it
- 1:45:19That's what he had to do, and it was very intelligent on his part, he was satisfied, just let me have possession of the ball, he just fell on it and took possession
- 1:45:30That changes it around
- 1:45:34After the run out of confirmation, Miami marched all the way down and at a first and goal of the 7, Nathan tried to go outside left, running with the ball, carelessly in one hand and he dropped it
- 1:45:46First down at the San Diego 17 for the Chargers, eye formation
- 1:45:53There is Bounce rolling right on a busted play, he runs for about 2 yards
- 1:46:00Bounce rolled out to hand the ball off and no one was there and Ernie Rowland tackled it
- 1:46:06Had to be a mix up, it looked like he wanted to get the ball to Muncie, but there was a mix up in the exchange, it didn't look like Muncie knew he was supposed to carry the football
- 1:46:14Capoletti had been in there, he goes out now, and Eric Sebers, the other tight end comes in
- 1:46:20Winslow of the Chargers has not caught a pass all day
- 1:46:26He has a bad foot, but they still have to pay attention to him
- 1:46:30Here's the pass by Bounce, long over the middle, Joyner can't get it broken up and complete, not around the 45
- 1:46:37Good defensive play by the quarterback, John McNeil
- 1:46:41Third and eighth
- 1:46:455-5-7 left in the third quarter
- 1:46:47That's what happens when you throw the ball high on that kind of a pattern, Jack had been thrown low at the numbers, he could have made that kind of a play without passing the first
- 1:46:55Third down and eighth coming up for the Chargers from their own 20
- 1:47:00After the fumble by Nathan, the second turnover
- 1:47:04By Miami, the crowd roaring, Bounce needs eight yards, sets to throw, he throws, caught at the 35, first down
- 1:47:15Going up to get it was Kellen Winslow, injury and all, and what a beautiful pass by Bounce over the linebacker
- 1:47:22And what a big catch, what a big catch to keep the drive alive, they have good field position down about the 37
- 1:47:29But a great play by Kellen Winslow, number 80, first catch of the day
- 1:47:345-1-2 left in the third quarter clock running, Miami leading 27-13
- 1:47:40San Diego from their own 38
- 1:47:43And a delay to Muncie outside and trying to turn the corner, got only a couple of yards to the 40 before he's driven out
- 1:47:50And Glenn Blackwood really forced it well
- 1:47:53Those defensive backs, Small, McNeil, Blackwood and Blackwood, both are good hitters, sure tacklers
- 1:48:00If you catch a pass in front of them, they make you pay
- 1:48:035-16 left in the third quarter, pick up of two, second down and eighth from the 40 yard line, four fouls
- 1:48:10Ordinarily a fellow like Winslow would be riddling the opposition, doesn't matter who they play, he's caught only one
- 1:48:18Chandler to the right, going to the left
- 1:48:22Winslow to the tight end, Siebers also in there, here's the pass by Fouts, dancing around and throws
- 1:48:28Spot out at the 45 yard line by Siebers, bringing about another third down play, it'll be third and three
- 1:48:40Third and three, 5-08 left in the third quarter
- 1:48:44Bringing in Kozlowski, the fifth defensive back, Brzezinski goes out
- 1:48:50The ball is at the San Diego 45, all of this after the fumble by Tony Nathan of Miami
- 1:48:56Third and three, Chandler to the right, joiner to the left, Winslow on a wing
- 1:49:03And the blitz, Fouts throws, it's dropped by Winslow at the 47
- 1:49:11He would have had a first down, it was right in his belly and he dropped it
- 1:49:15He tried to run, he thought he had the ball
- 1:49:18He did, he did, it looked like it might have been just a little bit behind him a little bit, Jack, but he still should have made the catch
- 1:49:25Talking about Winslow
- 1:49:27The ball was on his left hip a little bit behind, he started upfield and he forgot the ball and as a result, the punter is in
- 1:49:39Maury Buford and Tom Vigorito is back to get it, it's 15 and Vigorito could change it around
- 1:49:45Watch Miami guys
- 1:49:47Here's the running play and it is a first down
- 1:49:50They snapped it to the fullback, Miami was waiting for it but only because of the good running by Capoletti is San Diego able to keep it
- 1:50:00So both teams have run out of punter
- 1:50:03Yeah, it's been there all afternoon for both teams and finally Miami did it and now San Diego comes back with it, another big play
- 1:50:09Capoletti was hit short of a first down but he broke a tackle and went to midfield
- 1:50:15Yeah, that was great running by Capoletti, terrific determination
- 1:50:20425 left in the third quarter, San Diego is capitalized on two third down plays, here straight ahead is James Brooks, he gets only a couple to the 48th
- 1:50:33This has been a scoreless third period
- 1:50:3627-13 Miami on top, Doug Betters, Ernie Rowan with the tacklers and James Brooks and he can give an offense a lift with that lightning speed of his
- 1:50:47They got a big strong offensive line, San Diego, Billy Shields, 284, Wilkinson 260, basic 260, White 279, Washington 295
- 1:50:57Bounce back to throw again, likes to throw to Brooks, throws it to Brooks, Brooks inside the 45, Brooks down inside the 40, first down
- 1:51:04First down San Diego on the pass play to James Brooks, the tackle by Larry Gordon, you can almost feel that one coming Hank
- 1:51:10And that's the kind of play you like, it's a slight adjustment play Jack where you're looking at the quarterback and the receivers
- 1:51:17You're checking the linebacker, see what kind of coverage he's involved with, throw deep down field or to the back
- 1:51:22The great thing about Brooks, he makes you miss in the open field on a one on one
- 1:51:26The ball is marked down at the Miami 36 of first down, Brooks stays in the lineup, Kinslow is the wingback
- 1:51:33On first down the pass play, thrown and it is intercepted, back the other way comes Blackwood
- 1:51:41He's near the 40 yard line, Glenn Blackwood intercepts, out and Miami steps that drive
- 1:51:49Glenn Blackwood caught it
- 1:51:53And the tackle is finally made at the Miami 38, so the Chargers can't keep it going
- 1:52:033-0-3 left in the third quarter, Miami takes over, they still have that 27-13 lead and we'll be back in a moment
- 1:52:11Stricland's Western Ware and the Parker Plaza Harrisburg is currently having a store wide clearance sale with clients like these
- 1:52:28One half off, daily filled hats, at Stricland's Western Ware store wide clearance sale, these quality names are now one third off
- 1:52:34Dallas Western apparel suits, Jerry down coats and vests
- 1:52:38Also a third off, sweaters by Stetson, men's and ladies Nacona in Texas boots, sport coats and leather vests by Grace
- 1:52:50Also a third off, HVAC shirts, Levi gloves, lint on belts and Grace outerwear
- 1:52:56That's the store wide clearance sale going on now at Stricland's Western Ware in the Harrisburg Parker Plaza
- 1:53:01Stricland's Western Ware is open Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5 and Thursdays until 8
- 1:53:07We've just had the fourth Charger turnover of the day
- 1:53:17Miami has given it away twice, Super Bowl Sunday is two weekends away, Sunday January 30th
- 1:53:23and you'll hear it all on CBS radio sports, it's something special
- 1:53:28On the return, on the interception by Glenn Blackwood, the younger of the two Blackwoods, both the safety men
- 1:53:38a tackle by James Brooks and he might have saved big damage along the sideline at the Miami 38
- 1:53:43He did, no question
- 1:53:46Sun's still shining brightly here in Miami at the Orange Bowl, capacity crowd on hand
- 1:53:52and the Dolphins go back to work, they were all the way down to the seven the last time
- 1:53:57and then fumbled it away, only Nathan is in the backfield
- 1:54:03Woodley sets up to throw, screens it out, Nathan catches the ball, gets beyond the 40, beyond the 45
- 1:54:11and it's down at the 47, he fumbled but the play was whistled dead at the 47 and a gain of eight yards
- 1:54:18They caught him in a blitz that time, caught him in a blitz and if there's any play that you like to run against a blitz
- 1:54:23it's a screen pass, they guess right on the call offensively and pick up eight yards in the play makes a second and two
- 1:54:30And rushing today, Miami has compiled 172 yards, we have two and a half left in the third quarter
- 1:54:36Miami leads 27 to 13, they've been ahead throughout
- 1:54:42and Nathan is the lone setback, too tight ends, Hardy is the wingback
- 1:54:49The give is to Nathan and he gets a first down beyond midfield to the 48 of San Diego
- 1:54:55Knocked down by Gary Johnson but when they need rushing yards they can get it today against the Chargers
- 1:55:04The ball is at the San Diego, 48 in the first down
- 1:55:11150 left in the third quarter
- 1:55:15Miami has resurrected a formation they haven't used for a long time, Jack, a triple wing with one remaining back in the backfield
- 1:55:21They used to use it a lot with Gracie and Zonkis
- 1:55:24Andra Franklin is the running back now, here is a delay to Franklin and he gets a good block and cuts inside
- 1:55:31Taves through the block and Franklin went inside the 45 yard line and picked up three
- 1:55:38Bruce Lary came in the inside and made a good tackle, number 30
- 1:55:42120 left in the third quarter clock running
- 1:55:46Score remains 27-13, is it conceivable we have a scoreless third quarter with the Dolphins and the Chargers going at it
- 1:55:54Now Tony Nathan and Tom Vigorito are the backs
- 1:55:58Second down and seven
- 1:56:01At the Charger, 44
- 1:56:04Boy, look at her room on the right side
- 1:56:07Here is Woodley looking right, sets up Burrows right to the sideline, it's there, it's caught
- 1:56:12Inside the 30 yard line in the first down at the 26
- 1:56:16Tom Vigorito caught it and a good throw by Woodley
- 1:56:24He threw the ball like a frozen rope on the outside, Jack, and that's a sign of a great quarterback, a good arm
- 1:56:29When you control the sideline pattern that far downfield, right on the money like he did
- 1:56:33He saw what you saw, Hank, over there, what was it, one on one coverage?
- 1:56:37One on one and the guy was back there about 14 yards and no chance whatsoever to make the play
- 1:56:43As deep as he was playing, we're talking about Bruce Laird, number 30
- 1:56:48And a first down at the Charger, 26, for Miami
- 1:56:52Here comes Nathan running left, trying to turn the corner, cuts upfield, a flag goes down and so does Nathan at the 19
- 1:56:59And we'll check the flag, gotta be a holding penalty
- 1:57:04We'll wait and see, however
- 1:57:08There was a pick up on the play of 7 yards but Miami is moving backwards
- 1:57:16Last time they got down to the 7 and fumbled
- 1:57:20Now they're down to the 26 and they get hit with a holding call
- 1:57:24Holding, number 86, offense, first down
- 1:57:29Finally the tight end was caught and it's second and 20, excuse me, first and 20
- 1:57:40The ball is at the 36 of San Diego
- 1:57:4841 seconds left in the third quarter, Dolphins leading 27-13
- 1:57:53I see a draw here
- 1:57:55First and long and a pass play by Woodley
- 1:57:58And he throws to the sideline, it's caught for good yards
- 1:58:02Tight end runs through Packers and then steps out of bounds
- 1:58:05Down at the 27 and another flag goes down
- 1:58:09A flag goes down along the sideline as Hardy was hit over there
- 1:58:14Looks like it might be against San Diego this time
- 1:58:17The pass play carried down to the 26
- 1:58:21The original line of scrimmage and then a flag was thrown
- 1:58:29Information is given to the referee
- 1:58:34And we'll see here the personal foul against San Diego
- 1:58:39A personal foul
- 1:58:42So the pass and the penalty will really move it down the field
- 1:58:47And it will be an automatic first down
- 1:58:51With 32 seconds left in the third quarter
- 1:58:57They're going to put the ball down at the 13-yard line
- 1:59:00They put it at the 13 of San Diego
- 1:59:06Personal foul, late hit out of bounds, number 57, defense, first down
- 1:59:13Personal foul against Lyndon King, the line back around, a late hit
- 1:59:17And a first down for the Dolphins at the 13-yard line
- 1:59:24We've had a scoreless third quarter, we have 32 seconds remaining in the period
- 1:59:30David Woodley has played all the way, he's under center
- 1:59:34Nathan and Franklin in the backfield
- 1:59:37The delay to Tony Nathan and he picks his way down to the 11 before he's driven back
- 1:59:43And that will be the final play of the third quarter
- 1:59:46A two-yard pick up by Nathan
- 1:59:49And they'll go to the other end of the field
- 1:59:52Miami leading, they want the clock to run down and it will
- 1:59:56So we have a scoreless third quarter
- 2:00:00And Miami maintains their advantage
- 2:00:0327 to 13
- 2:00:08There's the gun, the end of the third quarter, the score on Miami 27, the Chargers 13
- 2:00:14Before you look under the hood of a new car, look at how the hood fits
- 2:00:18If you look at a Honda, you'll see the hood, doors, trunk, and hatch
- 2:00:23Fit the body with close tolerances, that's Honda quality
- 2:00:27And that's one reason why Hondas have traditionally retained a high resale value
- 2:00:32Among the best in the industry
- 2:00:34You only have to look at how the hood fits to understand that
- 2:00:38Honda, we make it live, boy
- 2:00:45This bird for you, there's no one else who does it quite the way you do
- 2:00:52So here to you, all you do, the king of beers is coming through
- 2:01:01For you to do
- 2:01:06This bird for you, hey, this bird for you
- 2:01:13For being on the job and working hard all day
- 2:01:18So here to you, you know it isn't only what you say, it's what you do
- 2:01:28For you, this bird for you, hey, this bird for you
- 2:01:37And that was the Bush St. Louis
- 2:01:40We start the fourth quarter, one of these teams will be eliminated from the Super Bowl tournament
- 2:01:47At the conclusion of this game, Hank Stram and Jack Buck with you from the Orange Bowl
- 2:01:51Miami has the ball at the San Diego 11 following a scoreless third period
- 2:01:56Miami has second and eight at that point
- 2:02:00David Woodley came to the bench, talked it over with Don Schulte
- 2:02:03And San Diego can ill afford any more points, they trail by 14 at the moment
- 2:02:13The winner of this game will host the New York Jets next week, next Sunday
- 2:02:18Prior to that, the winner of the Green Bay Dallas game to be played later today will play at Washington Saturday
- 2:02:24The Dolphins trying to figure out how to get into the end zone again
- 2:02:30Now Franklin and Nathan in the backfield, probably will run
- 2:02:35Look at the middle
- 2:02:36On second down, it's a delay to Franklin, Franklin moves inside the 10 yard line down to the eighth, they had it well covered
- 2:02:42And it's going to be third down, and they've plugged the middle up in a hurry
- 2:02:46Hank, the reason I said they'll probably run, they huddled along the sideline, Duriel Harris
- 2:02:51Took one quick listen about what they're talking about, talking about them very uninterested, he walked away
- 2:02:57So I figured it must be a running play
- 2:02:59And of course what they did the last time, they're surely going to benefit from it, hopefully
- 2:03:03That they are not going to try to be fancy and do what they've done very well, and that's run the ball
- 2:03:07Franklin went to the seven where it's third and fourth
- 2:03:11Nathan and Vigorito are in the backfield
- 2:03:15Franklin is out, and Woodley wants to throw, he runs with the ball, quarterback draw, touchdown!
- 2:03:20Woodley on a quarterback draw, there was that middle wide open again, and he raced for seven yards and a score
- 2:03:27He took one step back and lit out the middle
- 2:03:31Quarterback draw play, with the middle of the linebackers got to run out of there and pass coverage
- 2:03:36And as a result that's why the middle is there, the tacklers are coming across there very aggressively
- 2:03:41And that area has got to be vulnerable than it was
- 2:03:4433 to 13 with 14-18 left in the game
- 2:03:49Boy that thing popped open like it was on the blackboard
- 2:03:5262 yards, seven plays, three minutes and 45 seconds
- 2:03:57And a seven yard run
- 2:04:01Extra point drive by Vaughn Schaumann who missed only one all year
- 2:04:07And he boots it up and through, and that makes it 34 to 13
- 2:04:14Now the Chargers are worse off than they ever have been in this game
- 2:04:20With a score now, the Dolphins 34 and San Diego 13, let's take time out

- 2:05:45Brooks is the deep man, here is a swift kick bouncing inside the 20
- 2:05:49And eluding Brooks, who picks it up on the 12, returns across the 20 to the 25
- 2:05:55Here's Tackle Air by Jim Jensen, the quarterback who plays on the special teams
- 2:06:01And he goes back at their 25-yard line
- 2:06:05Thank you, we again have to look at the physical condition of Kevin Winslow when interpreting this game
- 2:06:12No question about that, he's such a dominant player
- 2:06:15And to have to play without his services is really tough
- 2:06:19He's in there, but he's been blocking primarily, he's caught one pass, he dropped another
- 2:06:24And it's first down at the 25-yard line, here's a pass play by Fouts
- 2:06:29Throws short off to the right, caught by Brooks beyond the 30, 35 out of bounds, first down at the 38 of San Diego
- 2:06:38No pressure that time, he had all the chance in the world, all the time in the world to read the defense and get the ball to the open receiver
- 2:06:44He does that very well if you don't put pressure up the middle on Fouts
- 2:06:50And he stopped the clock with 14 minutes left in the game
- 2:06:53The Dolphins are leading by 21
- 2:06:59First down, Chargers
- 2:07:01Here is the running play, Muncie with the ball, he ran over Chandler, the wide receiver, who was trying to block
- 2:07:10And he came across the 40 to the 45, he got 7
- 2:07:14Muncie knocked Chandler crazy, he said get out of here and he just knocked him right off his pins
- 2:07:19That's right, he ran right over the top of him
- 2:07:23Muncie ran for 7 yards
- 2:07:2513 and a half left in the game
- 2:07:29Chargers need 3 touchdowns, Chandler goes in motion, Fouts delays the ball to Muncie
- 2:07:35Muncie comes to midfield and he has a first down
- 2:07:39The Dolphins say go right ahead
- 2:07:43Just so you take a lot of time, that's what they want, go ahead and take a lot of time
- 2:07:47They're just not going to let him score easy, that's what you have to prevent now
- 2:07:50The Dolphins cannot let them score on a big play and let them score quickly
- 2:07:5513 minutes remaining in the game, first down at midfield for the Chargers
- 2:08:00Chandler to the right, jointer to the left in the pass play by Fouts over the middle
- 2:08:04And this one is caught, big yards inside the 25 yard line
- 2:08:09Right down
- 2:08:10And a flag is down, back across the field
- 2:08:17And it is going to be against San Diego on the motion call
- 2:08:22So instead of having the ball at the Miami 21, they suffer a 5 yard penalty after the catch by jointer
- 2:08:32That happened to the Chargers earlier on a holding call
- 2:08:37In the first half
- 2:08:39The offensive line, offensive line, beat the snap by Don Masich the center
- 2:08:45First and 15, at the San Diego 45, that stopped the clock with 12.49 left in the game
- 2:08:55Now the clock starts as Fouts drops the throw and screens it out to the right
- 2:09:00And the play carries beyond midfield and down to the 46
- 2:09:05Muncie caught the ball and did some nifty running
- 2:09:08Let's pause 5 seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network
- 2:09:132 o'clock Sunday afternoon, 42 degrees at WKSI El Dorado
- 2:09:21The ball is at the Miami 46, second down and 7
- 2:09:2812.10 left in the game
- 2:09:32Brooks in the backfield with Muncie
- 2:09:34Give to Brooks running right, a flag is down and it stops the play
- 2:09:38It's another penalty against San Diego
- 2:09:48Two penalties in this series
- 2:09:55Ball start, number 67, offense
- 2:09:59The call against the veteran guard at white
- 2:10:02The ball is put down at the San Diego 49, second and 12
- 2:10:06Again that stopped the clock, 12.05 left in the game, Miami leading 34 to 13
- 2:10:13Fourth penalty against San Diego in the game
- 2:10:20Fouts are going to pass again as time takes short throws long inside the 10 and incomplete
- 2:10:29Double coverage on Chandler who came up looking for a flag and there wasn't any
- 2:10:34The officials were peering right in on the same, there weren't all flags as the defenders played the ball
- 2:10:41Kyle Blackwood and Gerald Small were there
- 2:10:46Third and 12
- 2:10:49He would have had a chance Jack, he would have been able to throw it just a little bit farther
- 2:10:53Kind of wobble up there and didn't have the penetration that nobody likes on that kind of a pass
- 2:10:59Now it is third down and 12 from the San Diego 49 yard line
- 2:11:06Joyner and Chandler come left
- 2:11:09White scales as he added receiver
- 2:11:11The pass by Fouts, he's going to be sacked, he gets away, throws on the run, incomplete at the 30 yard line
- 2:11:18Sievers the tight end, trying to go up and get it
- 2:11:21Scales and Sievers were in the same area
- 2:11:24And it's fourth down
- 2:11:26And they're hardly to the point, they're hardly to the point Hank, trailing with 11.48 left trailing by 21 points
- 2:11:35They're hardly to the point where they can punt the ball and they're not going to
- 2:11:40It's fourth and 12
- 2:11:46Okay, here it comes with 11.48 remaining
- 2:11:51Fouts is 11 out of 26, one touchdown, two intercepted
- 2:11:56And he needs 12 yards on this fourth down play
- 2:12:00It's a four man rush
- 2:12:02He says, he throws over the middle and it's caught for a first down at the 35 yard line by Sievers
- 2:12:09Eric Sievers out of Maryland caught that line drive pass from Fouts
- 2:12:14Good work by the offensive line
- 2:12:16It really was, very good, he got a four man rush, got no penetration, he had plenty of time to throw the ball
- 2:12:20And when he's got time, he's going to shoot your eyes out, he did on the last play as the Sievers
- 2:12:25Number 85 right in the middle, the gut of that zone defense
- 2:12:29And Ernie Rohn made the tackle at the Miami
- 2:12:3235 yard line, a first down
- 2:12:3511.11 left in the game
- 2:12:40Short drop by Fouts is past the stone and it is incomplete at the 10
- 2:12:46He tried to force it between two defenders to get it to Charlie Joyner
- 2:12:50And the pass was incomplete
- 2:12:52It looked like a carbon copy of the one they intercepted
- 2:12:55That one could have been intercepted, but it wasn't, luckily it wasn't for San Diego
- 2:13:01McNeil and Lyle Blackwood, Lyle the older of the two brothers
- 2:13:07And there again, he didn't throw it out in front, far enough, he had to wait for it
- 2:13:11And that's why the ball was almost intercepted
- 2:13:1311.02 left in the game, 21 point lead Miami, second down in 10 San Diego
- 2:13:18At the Dolphins, 35
- 2:13:21Four man rush again, Fouts steps and throws and it is intercepted
- 2:13:27At the nine yard line
- 2:13:29Intercepted on a diving attempt by Glenn Blackwood
- 2:13:36So the fifth turnover
- 2:13:38A third interception against San Diego
- 2:13:43Gerald Small, Glenn Blackwood, his second of the day
- 2:13:48And that stops that
- 2:13:53Blackwood at his own nine, he flew through the air and intercepted that ball
- 2:13:58Now we have 10.54 left
- 2:14:00Yeah, I'm surprised, but here again, you say Dewey was lifting up the middle
- 2:14:05And he threw a bad ball, it's all it was to it, but again, that's what the pressure up the middle does about
- 2:14:11Put the ball down at the Miami 10, we have 10.54 left
- 2:14:1621 point lead Miami and we'll be back in just a moment

- 2:15:21As they say, Hank Stram, good defense will stop good offense every time and vice versa
- 2:15:26The ball is at the 10 yard line of Miami
- 2:15:30And on first down, Franklin runs left, strings it out, turns it up field, and gets about 3 yards before he has finally stopped
- 2:15:38Here we had a meeting between the number one offensive team in the National Football League, the number one defensive team, and the defense usually prevails
- 2:15:47It prevailed today, Jack, basically because of the field position that Miami had on the 27-23-37
- 2:15:53Three touchdowns, 21 points, that's been the difference in the game, Jack, really and truly
- 2:15:57You can't expect to play a game like this one and expect one team to go 80 yards consistently
- 2:16:03And the other team to play on one to 30 yards
- 2:16:05No way you're going to win, and that's why Miami is winning this game
- 2:16:08Second down and 7 from their 13
- 2:16:11Another running play on a delayed and Nathan, he cracks across the 15 out to the 17 yard line
- 2:16:1710 minutes remaining in the game, Keith Ferguson, the tackler
- 2:16:21The first to his 3 yards by Franklin
- 2:16:25And now Nathan gets 4 yards
- 2:16:29Third down and 3 for Miami
- 2:16:339.45 left in the game, Fouts has not had a good game
- 2:16:3812 out of 29, 3 intercepted
- 2:16:44Winslow is not a factor, he is normally always a factor, he was not a factor today, and when he's not a factor
- 2:16:50Double the outside receivers and Chandler I think has only caught two balls all day
- 2:16:55Here is the first down running play
- 2:16:58To Andra Franklin, he was in the backfield with Bennett and cracked over the left side and boomed out to the 25
- 2:17:04And that's the first down, and that will take us under the 9 minute mark
- 2:17:10Franklin to the 25
- 2:17:14Miami is a good football team, the Jets will have their hands pulled next Sunday
- 2:17:18And the Jets are good too, yes they are, good, strong, solid football team
- 2:17:22Well drilled, well disciplined, well coached, Don Schueler has done a great job in his path with his team
- 2:17:28And rushing 144 yards for Miami
- 2:17:33To the 25 yard line now and a first down
- 2:17:37Franklin a fake and a pass by Woodley, he's sacked, he gets away
- 2:17:41He runs for his life and he throws it away
- 2:17:45The flag is down, back uphill
- 2:17:49The flag is down, well away from the line of scrimmage
- 2:17:54Matt Moore is going to be against San Diego
- 2:17:58Williams, he had Williams Blake and Williams I think grabbed him
- 2:18:06So that will allow Miami to keep the ball at their 30
- 2:18:10Number 29 defense, automated first down
- 2:18:15Mike Williams the cornerback was holding, stops the clock with 8.31 left in the game
- 2:18:21Earlier this year Miami won in New York, 45-28
- 2:18:27And here in Miami, Miami beat the Jets again 20-19
- 2:18:32It's a first down at the 30
- 2:18:37For the Dolphins
- 2:18:40And they're running back Nathan following Franklin, gets 5 right up the middle
- 2:18:45And they're just tearing him up, 8.20 left
- 2:18:49Clip thrift to Tackler, they're really doing a number on him up front
- 2:18:54They're big up front San Diego is defensively with Jones, Kelcher when he's in there
- 2:18:59Wilbur Young when Kelcher doesn't play, Gary Johnson and Keith Ferguson but they're getting kicked around
- 2:19:04Yeah they really are, I can't understand why Kelcher hasn't played more than he has
- 2:19:07He's not in there now
- 2:19:09He hasn't been in there most of the time in the second half and played very unimpressively in the first half when he was in there
- 2:19:147.50 left in the game, second and five
- 2:19:18Stevenson the center, snaps the ball, here's a give to Franklin
- 2:19:22Franklin goes for about three, it'll be third and short coming up with Johnson and Ferguson at Tackler
- 2:19:28First it's Nathan, then it's Franklin
- 2:19:31And third and two from the 38
- 2:19:35For the old Clark is killing the Chargers now just as it killed the Vikings yesterday when John Riggins went to work
- 2:19:46Tom Figueredo is in the backfield, he comes into the game with 24 catches for the regular season more than anybody else in the club
- 2:19:52They like to throw to him
- 2:19:54214 yards rushing for Miami
- 2:19:58And on third down a long snap count and a give to Figueredo, follows Franklin and squirts out to the 40
- 2:20:05And got a first down, kept his feet to the 40 yard line
- 2:20:09He was right on the tail of Andra Franklin, first down for Miami
- 2:20:136.50 left, Foxville running
- 2:20:16They're doing it all
- 2:20:19Figueredo to the Miami 40
- 2:20:22And another first down
- 2:20:276.35 left, Eddie Hill checks into the lineup
- 2:20:336.5 minutes left in the game and Miami leading 34 to 13, a 21 point advantage, they take a long time in the huddle
- 2:20:43Now they have to hurry to beat the 32nd clock, Woodley gets under center
- 2:20:50And takes the snap, hands it off, Franklin bounces off one tackle, comes outside and gets five
- 2:20:55Hits five or six yards every run, another six yards for Franklin
- 2:21:02And he stayed in bounds, under six minutes left in the game
- 2:21:05Franklin is slowing getting up, gets no sympathy or relief back into the huddle he goes
- 2:21:10They'll expect him to be back to work on Monday and be ready to play again on Sunday, like nothing happened
- 2:21:15He had a great year, over 700 yards rushing during the regular season
- 2:21:19He's been a great backboard
- 2:21:21They've been looking for him for quite a while since the days of Zunka
- 2:21:26And kicked, five and a half minutes left
- 2:21:30San Diego is dying on the vine and it's second down and four, for Miami from their 46
- 2:21:36Nathan, no game
- 2:21:39Tony Nathan carried, was tripped up and gained nothing
- 2:21:45But he gained some time on the clock and will be under five minutes by the time it snapped again
- 2:21:51And even on third and four, San Diego does not stop the clock here with the timeout
- 2:21:56And if they were interested in getting back into it, Hank, it would have been a propitious time to use one
- 2:22:00I think so, yep
- 2:22:02Four fifty-five left in the game, third down and four coming up for the Dolphins
- 2:22:10So clock four forty-five left
- 2:22:15Four forty left
- 2:22:17Third and four, Miami, and a toss to the tailback, Tony Nathan, no game
- 2:22:22Fourth down, he stayed in bounds, and now we have four and a half left
- 2:22:26And it's fourth down as the punting unit goes down, they'll probably take a penalty
- 2:22:32And stop the clock, well they really chewed up some time
- 2:22:35They intercepted with almost eleven minutes left, and now they'll give it away with less than four minutes left
- 2:22:41So they kept the ball for about seven minutes even though they didn't score
- 2:22:48Franklin is rushed for 96 yards, Nathan 92, how's that for a one-two punch?
- 2:22:54That's what you look for, especially in a big game like this one
- 2:22:58Now they're going to let that thirty-second clock wind down, Tom Oros will kick it to James Brooks
- 2:23:04On the game clock we have three forty-five left, there's the snap, beating the thirty-second clock
- 2:23:10There's the kick, away from Brooks, he now takes it on the thirteen and is tackled at the fourteen
- 2:23:16Well that's typical of what Miami has been doing today, they've done everything right
- 2:23:20Vance, Vince Heflin downfield to make the tackle with three thirty-six remaining in the game
- 2:23:26And trailing by twenty-one points, the Chargers have only three and a half minutes to do something about it
- 2:23:32What's the score? The Dolphins thirty-four, the Chargers thirteen, let's take time out
- 2:23:36We're up to our ears in audio technology here at the Delco Electronics testing lab in Kokomo, Indiana
- 2:23:42Speaking of ears, who's the guy in the red jumpsuit sitting in the Buick Riviera?
- 2:23:45He's got microphones where his ears are supposed to be
- 2:23:47That's Morgan, a mechanical person, I was getting to him
- 2:23:50Sorry
- 2:23:51Three years ago, Delco Electronics and the prestigious Bose Corporation
- 2:23:54Blanket Bose Speakers?
- 2:23:55That's right, decided to combine their technologies
- 2:23:58The result is the Delco GM Bose Music System, the first system with components matched to a specific car model
- 2:24:04That's where Morgan comes in
- 2:24:05The guy with the microphone ears, huh?
- 2:24:06Yeah, he's into cycle acoustics, he's helped position the loudspeakers, even the design of the amplifiers to fit different GM cars
- 2:24:12You guys went through a lot of trouble
- 2:24:14Yes we did, the acoustical differences received by Morgan's ears were computerized
- 2:24:18Computerized!
- 2:24:19Why not, Delco's the number one digital control computer manufacturer
- 2:24:22In the whole world
- 2:24:23And above the world, Delco's making one of the computers that will be launched by the Space Shuttle
- 2:24:26And will the Space Shuttle also have a Delco GM Bose Music System on board?
- 2:24:30I'll have to check on that
- 2:24:31Uh huh
- 2:24:34Okay you New York Jets, come on down
- 2:24:37It'll be the New York Jets here in the Orange Bowl next Sunday
- 2:24:41Here's Pouts trying to do something about that situation, stepping up and throwing, incomplete out of the 30 yard line
- 2:24:48Good defensive play by the linebacker Brzezinski
- 2:24:52Three and a half minutes exactly left
- 2:24:5534 to 13, the Dolphins on top
- 2:24:58And it's going to be the Jets here in Miami in either Green Bay or Dallas at Washington next Saturday
- 2:25:04The Jet game takes place next Sunday
- 2:25:07The Dolphins really early in the game Jack, really took them out of the rhythm of their offense
- 2:25:11Talking about the balance of the run of the pass
- 2:25:14And really deserve a lot of credit for the great job they have done against this high power San Diego offense
- 2:25:19Pouts throws to the right sideline, it's intercepted
- 2:25:22Miami has it, Gerald Small runs back inside the 20
- 2:25:26And down to the 15 and there's a play
- 2:25:29Don McNeil got that one
- 2:25:31So McNeil is intercepted, Small is intercepted
- 2:25:34Glenn Blackwood has two
- 2:25:36That's the sixth San Diego turnover
- 2:25:39With three 18 left and now we deal with the play
- 2:25:42Pouts was intercepted
- 2:25:47And McNeil ran it back to the 16 and then a flag came down
- 2:25:54And more yards is marked off, it's going to be first and goal at the nine
- 2:26:15Personal foul, unnecessary roughness
- 2:26:18Home tackle number 46, defense first down, time out
- 2:26:24The call was unnecessary roughness against San Diego
- 2:26:31Now we have three 18 left and a time out first and goal Miami at the eighth of San Diego
- 2:26:37Dolphins leading by 21 and we'll be back in just a moment
- 2:26:41What are your plans doing Harrisburg, here's Terry Maynard

- 2:27:27One, two, K and I
- 2:27:42Well the Miami Dolphins have the ball back after the sixth San Diego turnover
- 2:27:49And a first and goal at the eighth with 3.18 left
- 2:27:54Woody Bennett is the running back
- 2:27:59The give is to Bennett, he finds nothing over the right side, no game
- 2:28:05But the clock runs down to 3.10, tackled by Cliff Griff
- 2:28:09Well San Diego for all their offensive fireworks, and they call timeout now
- 2:28:14Is through for the year, they call a timeout with 3.05 left
- 2:28:19The score is the same, Dolphins 34, Chargers 13, let's take timeout
- 2:28:24For 80 years, Buick has had a love affair with the automobile
- 2:28:28Right down to today's state of the art Century
- 2:28:30With its very efficient form, it offers an EPA estimated MPG of 24
- 2:28:35Use estimated MPG for comparisons, actual mileage may be different
- 2:28:39And in the best Buick tradition, Century has a remarkably luxurious passenger environment
- 2:28:4480 years of Buick went into the 83 Century
- 2:28:47You see Buick's love affair with the automobile isn't getting older, it's getting better

- 2:29:20David Woodley came to the sideline to talk it over with Don Schuller
- 2:29:25His second down and goal from the nine yard line, 3.05 left
- 2:29:31And to our stations, when we get another timeout, we'll give you a chance for a local message
- 2:29:36Hank, a lot of good teams have been eliminated
- 2:29:38The Chargers apparently going down to defeat here today
- 2:29:42The Raiders were knocked off, the Vikings were knocked off, and a good team will be knocked off later today
- 2:29:49That's what happens, you go down the wire, somebody's going to get knocked off, Jack, as you know
- 2:29:53And as you mentioned though, really the Raiders have been an excellent team all year long
- 2:29:58And the San Diego Chargers have been very explosive, everybody knows about their defensive problems and woes
- 2:30:03But you finally get this far, and it kind of glamorizes really what your shortcomings are
- 2:30:08It's very obvious the defensive shortcomings of the San Diego Chargers in this game
- 2:30:12Rich Diana is in the backfield, Bennett carries the ball back to the original line of scrimmage
- 2:30:17Back to the eight, and San Diego calls timeout again
- 2:30:21Timeout again, and now we have 2.59 left, and San Diego has one more timeout remaining
- 2:30:28With a score of 34 to 13 in favor of Miami
- 2:30:31Let's give our stations a chance for a message, and we'll be back in just a moment
- 2:30:38Hello, this is Cliff Robertson
- 2:30:40I'd like to say a few words about those very special people who save millions of lives every year
- 2:30:45Yet they never receive any medals
- 2:30:48In fact, you never hear their names
- 2:30:51These quiet heroes are volunteer blood donors who supply the more than 30,000 pints of blood used every day
- 2:30:59More donors are needed if we hope to keep up with the demand
- 2:31:03Only 5% of those eligible donate blood
- 2:31:06The procedure is safe and simple, and the entire process takes less than an hour
- 2:31:12There is no substitute for human blood
- 2:31:15An emergency can happen at any time when you or someone you love requires blood in a hurry
- 2:31:20It can mean the difference between life and death
- 2:31:23Won't you give blood today and join the ranks of the quiet heroes?
- 2:31:29A public service of this station and the American Association of Blood Banks
- 2:31:34Third and goal from the 9 for Miami
- 2:31:39They stand the ground and Bennett runs with a ball inside the 5 down to the 4 yard line
- 2:31:45He is tackled by Allen
- 2:31:49It's 4th down, the clock stopped at the moment
- 2:31:56With a final timeout used by San Diego and the referee Jerry Markright as he is obligated to do
- 2:32:01Goes to the sideline to tell Don Coriel he has no more timeouts
- 2:32:06Woody Bennett, 62-22, played his collegiate football right here in this stadium for the University of Miami
- 2:32:13The ball is at the 4
- 2:32:17And the last timeout is used
- 2:32:21And Miami is not going to try the field goal
- 2:32:24Sometimes nasty things can happen on a field goal try
- 2:32:27Such as a block and a return for a touchdown
- 2:32:30So on 4th down and goal from the 4, they're going to run from scrimmage apparently
- 2:32:35The clock will start, 2.46 left in the game
- 2:32:40The Dolphins ahead throughout
- 2:32:42Led by the score of 27-13 at the half and lead 34-13 now
- 2:32:49Woody Bennett and Tom Vigorito are at the backs
- 2:32:53Now Rich Diana goes in
- 2:32:59It is 4th down
- 2:33:04And the referee says let's go
- 2:33:08The Miami Dolphins will be entertaining the Jets next Sunday
- 2:33:12Two different times have been given to us so we don't really
- 2:33:15We're not really certain what the broadcast time will be but you'll hear it on CBS radio
- 2:33:19It's 4th down
- 2:33:21Diana and Bennett in the backfield
- 2:33:24From the 4, motion by Moore
- 2:33:27A give to Bennett trying to get outside, cuts up, he is hit, dropped at the 5 and the ball goes over to San Diego
- 2:33:33With 2.39 left
- 2:33:35Block stops on the change of possession, Kim Fox the tackle
- 2:33:40Well the defensive unit of the Dolphins has to go back out of the field
- 2:33:482.39 left
- 2:33:5234-13 the score
- 2:33:58Miami during the season
- 2:34:07And 6 wins, here's a pass play from Fouts
- 2:34:11The end zone out beyond the 10 yard line, it's caught and a big hit was made
- 2:34:15On Hollahan the tight end, tackle at the 13
- 2:34:19Pick up of 8
- 2:34:21And a hurry up offense
- 2:34:26We have 2.15 left in the game
- 2:34:284 man rush, 4 Miami, Fouts is sacked at the 5 yard line
- 2:34:33That's the third time they've sacked him, back at the 5, it stops the clock
- 2:34:38But now they'll start it again
- 2:34:40And it'll take us to the 2 minute warning
- 2:34:44So 6 turnovers, 3 sacks
- 2:34:47A bad combination for the visiting San Diego team
- 2:34:50Here's the 2 minute warning with the score 34-13 in favor of the Dolphins
- 2:34:56Let's take time out
- 2:34:58You've worked so hard
- 2:35:01And come so far
- 2:35:04You take your best to make it
- 2:35:09You're so good
- 2:35:12You knew it would
- 2:35:15Your moment here
- 2:35:17So take it
- 2:35:21Bring out your best
- 2:35:24Bring out your best
- 2:35:27But wise alike
- 2:35:35Bring out your best
- 2:35:37But wise alike
- 2:35:43You've got the best pass by the ref.
- 2:35:46You earned it all, now taste it.
- 2:35:49But why the life?
- 2:35:51Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:35:56Next weekend we'll have both championship games for you on CBS Radio,
- 2:36:00commencing at 12.15 Eastern Time, Dallas or Green Bay at Washington on Saturday,
- 2:36:05and then at 12.45 Eastern Time with New York here at Miami.
- 2:36:10What do you think of that match?
- 2:36:12We'll have a lot of fun, I guarantee you that, Jack.
- 2:36:14Next week up in Washington and right back here.
- 2:36:17Same schedule we had, same weekend.
- 2:36:20Third down and ten, fouls from the end zone, throws the screen to Muncie.
- 2:36:24Muncie comes out across the ten and tries four and gets a first down.
- 2:36:28He's out near the 20 and as San Diego tries to get something done on offense,
- 2:36:34I can tell you that David Woodley was 17 out of 23, 196 yards,
- 2:36:39two touchdowns, one interception, an outstanding performance.
- 2:36:43Bouts tries to add to his figures, dumps it off short, it's caught on the wing,
- 2:36:47and Muncie runs out of bounds at the 24, stopping the clock with 131 left.
- 2:36:51Franklin rushed for 96 yards, Nathan rushed for 92 and caught eight passes.
- 2:36:57They were just going up and down the field early in the game, Jack,
- 2:37:00throwing a pass and a linebacker from their triple-wing formation.
- 2:37:03Had great success with it, and then they completed the package.
- 2:37:06I'm talking about the package of the formation by running inside, outside,
- 2:37:10doing a combination of things in the same formation, and were very, very successful.
- 2:37:14131 left, second down and six from their own 24 and a fouls pass.
- 2:37:20He's chased out of the pocket, throws long downfield, and it is intercepted by Miami.
- 2:37:27Coming back with the ball is Lyle Blackwood.
- 2:37:30He gets one and he's tackled at the 27.
- 2:37:33So Glenn Blackwood intercepted two, Darrell Small won, Lyle Blackwood won,
- 2:37:40John McNeil won, a total of five.
- 2:37:46Five interceptions against Ann Bouts, and the seventh turnover.
- 2:37:55He threw into double coverage and was burned with 114 left.
- 2:38:00Now the Blackwood brothers, I wonder if brothers ever intercepted passes before
- 2:38:05in the National Football League. Glenn got two and Lyle got one.
- 2:38:08That's got to be a rare, very rare occasion.
- 2:38:11It's unusual to have two of them in the same defensive backfield at the safety spots.
- 2:38:16And now San Diego has no timeouts, and so this game will be over with a couple of snaps of the football,
- 2:38:23which is now resting at the Miami 28.
- 2:38:27They took it all away from them, didn't they? They took it all away early.
- 2:38:30They don't play catch-up football, and they normally do that very well.
- 2:38:33But the key really, I think, Jack, field position was the key, and the fact that they did not have Winslow,
- 2:38:38it was obvious from the very beginning of the game he could not play up the par.
- 2:38:42Therefore it could put a lot more pressure on the outside receivers.
- 2:38:46Chandler, when he caught two balls, was not a factor in the game whatsoever, and you take away the big gun.
- 2:38:51Winslow and Chandler, you've got to be out of business.
- 2:38:54Woodley is through for the day, 17 out of 23, 196 yards, one intercepted, and he ran seven yards per touchdown.
- 2:39:01And Jim Jensen, second-year quarterback out of Boston University, is the quarterback.
- 2:39:06He'll take the snaps.
- 2:39:09Hill and Diane are in the backfield with him.
- 2:39:12The snap of the ball and the clock runs down, 1-10.
- 2:39:16And San Diego can't do a thing about it. We have our final score of 34 to 13.
- 2:39:23Lindsey Nelson and Jim Kelly are standing by at Texas Stadium,
- 2:39:27and they will fill the airwaves here on CBS Radio with the story of the second game today.
- 2:39:34First downs, Miami 30 to 17, rushing 223 to 71, passing 210 to 201.
- 2:39:40How many times did he outpass San Diego? Total yards, 433 to 272.
- 2:39:48And turnover, 7 for San Diego, 2 for Miami.
- 2:39:54Six penalties for each team. There's the last snap of the ball,
- 2:39:58and the charges have been eliminated. We're now down to two teams.
- 2:40:04It'll be the Jets at Miami next Sunday for the AFC Championship and a trip to the Super Bowl out at Pasadena.
- 2:40:17Unfortunately, the clock is running down now, and there's the gun marking the end of the game.
- 2:40:2334-13, Miami. Let's get our stations a chance for a message. We'll be back in just a moment.

- 2:41:25One, two, K and I!
- 2:41:33Not only did Miami take it away, talking about the San Diego offense early in the game,
- 2:41:38but in the second half, when San Diego scored and trailed by the score of 27 to 13,
- 2:41:45San Diego had another chance to come back, but Miami stopped them again.
- 2:41:49Yeah, they had the ball on a 37-yard line.
- 2:41:51As you mentioned, 27-13, that was a great time for them to do something, get some points on the board,
- 2:41:56to get back in the game. They did not, and from that time on, they never had a chance.
- 2:42:00It was all over. School was out, and they started to play the traveling music.
- 2:42:04Miami, the number one team on defense in the National Football League, and they showed why today.
- 2:42:09They're not very weak, are they?
- 2:42:10No, they're not. They have a very alert, aggressive, strong defensive secondary, good defensive structure.
- 2:42:16Bill Arnsberger has done a fantastic job with this defense. They've earned the right to be number one,
- 2:42:20and they expressed that skill and ability here this afternoon. No question about it. You have to give them credit.
- 2:42:24Don Schula and his coaching staff at the Miami Dolphins win this one very impressively here this afternoon,
- 2:42:2934-13 in the Orange Bowl.
- 2:42:32San Diego, seven turnovers, five interceptions, and two fumbles.
- 2:42:37In addition, Dan Fouts, the quarterback, was sacked three different times.
- 2:42:43At the half, Miami enjoyed the lead and came out in the second half still throwing the ball on first down.
- 2:42:52They didn't sit on it, and they walk away with a 21-point victory.
- 2:42:56Let's give our stations a chance for this message, and we'll be back in a moment.
