- 0:05Speaker 1: Yes, this is the Inside Scoop, Foul Territory Senior Insider
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal is with us. And I'm excited to get
- 0:09Speaker 1: into the National League wildcard race. The American League wildcard
- 0:12Speaker 1: race gets so much attention for so many teams. Ken,
- 0:15Speaker 1: before we do that, and this will kind of be
- 0:16Speaker 1: our segue into it, let's get into one of those teams,
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks. So we did fair territory yesterday. You explained
- 0:22Speaker 1: a lot about your article. I just want to give
- 0:24Speaker 1: these guys a chance to chime in too. So let's
- 0:26Speaker 1: just start it like this. What stood out to you
- 0:29Speaker 1: about the Cattell Marte article and the work that you
- 0:32Speaker 1: did behind the scenes to uncover what happened here?
- 0:36Speaker 2: What stood out to me, Scott, I guess would be
- 0:38Speaker 2: that there's probably more to it than we knew. And
- 0:42Speaker 2: that's always the case with players, often the case when
- 0:45Speaker 2: you have situations like this. And I'm not excusing Marte
- 0:49Speaker 2: because you have to show up for your team. You
- 0:51Speaker 2: have to show up at the ballpark. And if you're hurt, okay,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but you got to get there. So that is all
- 0:59Speaker 2: given that there is no excuse that he had to
- 1:01Speaker 2: do that. He knows he was wrong. He's apologized for that,
- 1:04Speaker 2: my understanding. to Mike Hayes in the general manager and
- 1:06Speaker 2: Tori Lovello, the manager. What I didn't know was that
- 1:10Speaker 2: he's got some stuff going on off the field with
- 1:14Speaker 2: a family member, a close family member who is really,
- 1:18Speaker 2: really ill. And then you have also the knee injury
- 1:21Speaker 2: and the frustration he was dealing with there. Again, I'm
- 1:25Speaker 2: not excusing it, but that is one thing that stood
- 1:28Speaker 2: out to me in putting the article together. The other
- 1:31Speaker 2: thing is, Mike Hazen, the general manager, was very frank, saying, listen,
- 1:36Speaker 2: we're trying to win baseball games, and he's an extremely
- 1:39Speaker 2: talented player. It's not always going to be perfect, and
- 1:42Speaker 2: this is the strategy or the course we've chosen with him,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and listen, it's been a few years now where you've
- 1:50Speaker 2: had incidents or situations like this with Marte, and they've
- 1:55Speaker 2: lived with it. Now, you could argue, and I mention this,
- 1:58Speaker 2: that They've been too forgiving, that they've been too soft
- 2:01Speaker 2: on him, and they should have maybe traded him when
- 2:04Speaker 2: they had a better chance to do that. Now he's
- 2:06Speaker 2: a 10-5 guy, probably can't be traded. But at the
- 2:09Speaker 2: same time, he's an extremely valuable guy on a below-market contract. Well,
- 2:15Speaker 2: that's the kind of player all teams want.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I thought your article hit on the human side of Marte,
- 2:21Speaker 3: going through things and then how he emotionally handles things. Lavello...
- 2:26Speaker 3: And even the front office with Hazen. But one of
- 2:30Speaker 3: the things in your, did you get any hints when
- 2:33Speaker 3: you talked to the players that they ever felt like
- 2:35Speaker 3: he wasn't giving it his best on the field? Because
- 2:39Speaker 3: I didn't see anything in the article about that. It
- 2:41Speaker 3: was more of, well, Cattell being Cattell. And yes, he's
- 2:45Speaker 3: done this before. Did they ever hint that maybe the
- 2:47Speaker 3: effort wasn't there on the field?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Well, I didn't include this. And it's not a lack
- 2:53Speaker 2: of effort, but some guys pointed out And Tori Lovello,
- 2:56Speaker 2: in the story, the quote I had from him when
- 2:58Speaker 2: he said he's frustrated he retreats, some of the players
- 3:02Speaker 2: pointed out that that can be a situation that happens
- 3:04Speaker 2: during game two, where it's not going to be checked out,
- 3:08Speaker 2: but maybe he's just not as into it as he
- 3:11Speaker 2: should be. There are things that you do on a
- 3:13Speaker 2: field that maybe you wouldn't do when you're completely locked in.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So overall, the sense I got was he's not a
- 3:21Speaker 2: disruptive guy. He's not a bad guy per se. He
- 3:25Speaker 2: is just someone who maybe is more emotional than most
- 3:29Speaker 2: and more high-maintenance in certain respects. And I don't say
- 3:34Speaker 2: that in a bad way because a lot of players
- 3:36Speaker 2: are high-maintenance. But he needs positive reinforcement. That was what
- 3:40Speaker 2: one of the players told me. He needs that. And
- 3:43Speaker 2: Torrey Lovello kind of indicated the same thing. So, again,
- 3:47Speaker 2: there's a lot to... All these guys, all the players
- 3:50Speaker 2: are out there. We see them. We see what they
- 3:53Speaker 2: do on their performance, with their performance on the field.
- 3:57Speaker 2: We don't always know what's going on behind the scenes.
- 3:59Speaker 2: And I want to be clear once more. I'm not saying,
- 4:02Speaker 2: oh man, poor Quetel Marte, because Quetel Marte was wrong here.
- 4:07Speaker 2: But at the same time, there is a depth that
- 4:10Speaker 2: we need to understand and recognize. We don't always know.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Even the reporters covering the team don't always know what's
- 4:16Speaker 2: going on in guys' personal lives. Even their teammates don't
- 4:18Speaker 2: always know what's going on. And it's just worth repeating
- 4:24Speaker 2: that and understanding that. The game is really hard. I
- 4:27Speaker 2: don't need to tell you and Josh that, Eric. The
- 4:29Speaker 2: game is extremely hard to play. When you have other distractions,
- 4:33Speaker 2: other things, injuries, it becomes that much more difficult. Yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 2: for sure.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And as Kratzy said, you hit on the more personal side,
- 4:43Speaker 4: human side, because obviously there are two sides. And he
- 4:47Speaker 4: retreats and we've gotten through all of that. But do
- 4:49Speaker 4: you think there was any indication that the team knew
- 4:52Speaker 4: any of this before the article came out? Like, is
- 4:54Speaker 4: this something that they try to keep under wraps or
- 4:56Speaker 4: were they just thinking that it was just an injury?
- 4:59Speaker 4: And then as this stuff comes out now, this is
- 5:02Speaker 4: because obviously players talk about, you know, Not the drama,
- 5:06Speaker 4: but obviously he plays, but sometimes they can, you know,
- 5:10Speaker 4: we've been in clubhouses. You don't want anything to take
- 5:11Speaker 4: away from the objective at hand, which I said, they're
- 5:15Speaker 4: winning baseball games. And since he's kind of had this,
- 5:18Speaker 4: I think the record's been five and four, I believe.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I could be wrong.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Or something like that. Do you think that that little
- 5:27Speaker 4: bit of looming over is going to carry over into
- 5:29Speaker 4: this last month?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Because I know he's. That's a great question on that. Josh,
- 5:33Speaker 2: that kind of leads us to the next step here,
- 5:36Speaker 2: which is once he comes off the injured list, I
- 5:38Speaker 2: think he's eligible as soon as Monday, what happens? Now,
- 5:42Speaker 2: he's going to apologize. He's going to address the media.
- 5:44Speaker 2: He's going to apologize to his teammates. We know that.
- 5:47Speaker 2: That's going to happen. They've basically said that. What happens
- 5:50Speaker 2: to the team dynamic? Do they simply welcome him back
- 5:53Speaker 2: and say, listen, this guy's a great player. He can
- 5:55Speaker 2: get us to the playoffs? Or is there some kind
- 5:57Speaker 2: of lingering tension? I don't know the answer to that.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And you guys both know, 26-man clubhouse, You're not going
- 6:03Speaker 2: to have unanimous sentiment on anything. Some guys will be
- 6:08Speaker 2: more supportive of Marte. Some guys will be more frustrated, exasperated,
- 6:12Speaker 2: whatever the word you might want to use. As for
- 6:14Speaker 2: did the Diamondbacks know this side of his personality, they
- 6:17Speaker 2: absolutely knew it. They went through it last year. They've
- 6:19Speaker 2: been through it even before that. So, again, they've been
- 6:24Speaker 2: willing to withstand these storms, if you want to call
- 6:28Speaker 2: them that. And they've been willing to do that because, again,
- 6:32Speaker 2: he is a special player.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Let's talk about this National League race, the wildcard race
- 6:37Speaker 3: that the Diamondbacks are in. Where do they go from here?
- 6:40Speaker 3: Not with or without Cattell, we've hit on that. But
- 6:44Speaker 3: how does this team find the path to make it
- 6:48Speaker 3: into the wildcard, to make that last spot, which they've
- 6:52Speaker 3: kind of faltered a little bit without Cattell?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Depends on the pitching, Eric, in my opinion. They are
- 6:59Speaker 2: in a precarious place with the health of their staff.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Soroka just went on the aisle again. They expect he'll
- 7:05Speaker 2: be back. They've been waiting on Corbin Burns and Zach Gallin.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And who knows when they'll be back, if they'll be
- 7:14Speaker 2: effective when they're back, and can they survive in their
- 7:18Speaker 2: present state where they are right now? I don't know.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And the Padres have played really well in the last, what, six,
- 7:25Speaker 2: eight weeks or so. It's a tough team to chase,
- 7:28Speaker 2: even though certainly the Diamondbacks are within range here. So
- 7:33Speaker 2: if I had to bet right now, I'd bet the Padres.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I just think they're in a better place overall, and
- 7:39Speaker 2: you can factor in the Marte situation when saying they're
- 7:43Speaker 2: in a better place overall. But it's a race, and
- 7:47Speaker 2: we'll see what happens down the stretch. The Diamondbacks are
- 7:49Speaker 2: a good team, and they've got one superstar, Corbin Carroll,
- 7:53Speaker 2: A guy named Geraldo Perdomo, who's a really good player,
- 7:56Speaker 2: maybe hasn't had the best year. And then Marte, who
- 7:59Speaker 2: is capable of amazing things. You guys asked me what
- 8:03Speaker 2: I learned in the article. One of the things I
- 8:05Speaker 2: learned is that he hit that walk-off homer in early
- 8:09Speaker 2: June against the Dodgers to give the Diamondbacks a split
- 8:12Speaker 2: of a four-game series at home. That was the sixth
- 8:15Speaker 2: hardest ball hit by a Diamondback this year. The guy
- 8:18Speaker 2: who has the five hardest, it's also Quetel Marte. And
- 8:21Speaker 2: that speaks to He hasn't had the best year either,
- 8:25Speaker 2: but they are capable of doing big things. We saw
- 8:28Speaker 2: that a few years ago when they made it to
- 8:30Speaker 2: the World Series.
- 8:31Speaker 1: It's time to remind everyone why baseball is glorious, especially
- 8:35Speaker 1: nowadays where you could think your team is out of it,
- 8:38Speaker 1: but they might be back in it again. Let me
- 8:40Speaker 1: introduce you to the American League wildcard, KP, and let's
- 8:43Speaker 1: tell everyone why they might need to head back to SeatGeek,
- 8:47Speaker 1: grab some more tickets for what is a playoff race
- 8:50Speaker 1: before the playoffs actually begin.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Speaking about being out of it, I'm an American League
- 8:56Speaker 5: East guy, and I'm talking to you Toronto fans. I'm
- 8:58Speaker 5: talking to you Baltimore fans. A couple weeks ago, probably
- 9:02Speaker 5: not a reason to come out to the games. Look
- 9:03Speaker 5: at the standings right now. Both of you teams are
- 9:05Speaker 5: right back in this wildcard race.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Rangers fans, we can go on and on. Mariners fans,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you might be feeling a little queasy, but you're still
- 9:13Speaker 1: in this thing too. So all of you should head
- 9:16Speaker 1: to SeatGeek and get yourself 10% off your next set
- 9:20Speaker 1: of MLB tickets. 10% off MLB tickets with the promo
- 9:23Speaker 1: code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link in the
- 9:26Speaker 1: description to download the app and have the code automatically
- 9:29Speaker 1: added to your account so that you can use it later.
- 9:32Speaker 3: One more with the Diamondbacks. Gabriel Moreno. Gabriel Moreno behind
- 9:36Speaker 3: the dish. Have you seen the maturation of a player
- 9:40Speaker 3: that got his team in the first year of a
- 9:42Speaker 3: trade to the World Series and then has taken some
- 9:46Speaker 3: criticism and now Sure seems that way. And he's a
- 9:49Speaker 3: guy that has had some injuries too.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So you never know how that... figures into his development.
- 10:02Speaker 2: And I was just talking to a GM this morning,
- 10:04Speaker 2: not the Diamondbacks GM and not even someone who was
- 10:07Speaker 2: talking about this situation. And he said, relative to prospects,
- 10:11Speaker 2: the old line, it ain't linear, right? These guys do
- 10:14Speaker 2: not always follow a linear path, go straight up from
- 10:17Speaker 2: the start of their careers. George Lombard Jr., right now,
- 10:20Speaker 2: classic example. Been in the big leagues a few weeks,
- 10:24Speaker 2: amazing defensively at the start, and then we see the
- 10:26Speaker 2: six errors in six games, and it's baffling to people. Well,
- 10:29Speaker 2: because it's not linear. So, it seems to me that
- 10:33Speaker 2: Moreno has followed that kind of path, and Eric, I
- 10:35Speaker 2: don't need to tell you, it's even more difficult for
- 10:37Speaker 2: a catcher and a catcher in today's game when there
- 10:40Speaker 2: is so much information to process. So... He is a
- 10:44Speaker 2: stalwart for them. He is one of their key players,
- 10:47Speaker 2: and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Okay, Ken, to switch gears, I think you also wrote
- 10:56Speaker 4: something on Andy Green wanted to prioritize family over managing.
- 11:00Speaker 4: And I know Andy a little bit from his days
- 11:03Speaker 4: at UK. He played with my older brother, Vince, and
- 11:05Speaker 4: then obviously I played as Andy was coaching. And he
- 11:08Speaker 4: was actually in Pittsburgh when I saw him, but I
- 11:10Speaker 4: didn't know that, but it was one of the– Quotes
- 11:14Speaker 4: that popped out to me, do you see more managers
- 11:19Speaker 4: looking at that? Because I know it was not necessarily
- 11:21Speaker 4: a big deal, but it was brought up this past
- 11:23Speaker 4: Super Bowl. And Andy Green is kind of one of
- 11:25Speaker 4: the first managers that I've heard say that. But we
- 11:28Speaker 4: all know playing a sport, coaching a sport, there are sacrifices.
- 11:32Speaker 4: But is that something that you expected? Because I know
- 11:35Speaker 4: he kind of took over interim. And just reading that,
- 11:39Speaker 4: I thought that was interesting.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Josh, I would say I didn't expect it. And the
- 11:43Speaker 2: reason I didn't expect it is his career arc. So
- 11:47Speaker 2: you go back to San Diego, 2016 to 19, four
- 11:50Speaker 2: straight losing seasons. He's fired at the end of the fourth,
- 11:53Speaker 2: right before the end of the fourth. And he comes to, well,
- 11:59Speaker 2: he goes to Chicago to be the bench coach for
- 12:00Speaker 2: David Ross. Then he comes to the Mets to be
- 12:02Speaker 2: the farm director. I would have expected, what I did
- 12:06Speaker 2: expect from him was, hey man, now's my chance to
- 12:10Speaker 2: prove I can manage. And that's not what I heard.
- 12:13Speaker 2: It's not what we've been hearing, Will Salmon and I,
- 12:16Speaker 2: in covering the story for The Athletic. So it doesn't
- 12:20Speaker 2: necessarily surprise me knowing Andy a little bit and knowing
- 12:23Speaker 2: how much he values his family. It's not to say
- 12:26Speaker 2: other managers don't value their families. His twin girls are
- 12:30Speaker 2: at an age going into their senior year of high
- 12:31Speaker 2: school where he feels he wants to be present for them.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And for whatever reason, he doesn't feel like managing is
- 12:38Speaker 2: this burning desire for him where he's going to sacrifice
- 12:41Speaker 2: everything what he would need to sacrifice. Now, the interesting
- 12:46Speaker 2: aspect here is front office jobs are much more year-round
- 12:50Speaker 2: than managing jobs or playing jobs. Front office guys never
- 12:54Speaker 2: get a break. Even Christmas week, they're working usually with
- 12:58Speaker 2: transactions and all that. But the way it was explained
- 13:01Speaker 2: to me, and this is true, I know this from
- 13:03Speaker 2: covering the sport, front office people, general managers, foreign directors,
- 13:08Speaker 2: whichever you want to discuss, they have the ability at
- 13:12Speaker 2: least to break away at times to see a family event,
- 13:16Speaker 2: whether it's, I don't know, a dance recital, a sporting event,
- 13:19Speaker 2: whatever the case might be. So a fan might say, well,
- 13:24Speaker 2: what's the big deal? I mean, he's away from his team.
- 13:26Speaker 2: As a manager, he'd be away from his family. As
- 13:29Speaker 2: a manager, he'd be away from his family. As a
- 13:30Speaker 2: front office guy, well, it is different. And either way,
- 13:35Speaker 2: it's not like you're present for your family all the time,
- 13:38Speaker 2: but there are choices you can make. and being in
- 13:41Speaker 2: the front office is one of them, to maybe ease
- 13:44Speaker 2: it a little bit, at least during the season.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Okay, and you are doing the unbelievable Red Sox-Yankees rivalry
- 13:53Speaker 3: this weekend, which is maybe going to be a precursor
- 13:56Speaker 3: to October, all the things that you guys are going
- 13:59Speaker 3: to say on Fox 1, and you're going to be
- 14:01Speaker 3: on the sideline reporting all this stuff. Are we even
- 14:04Speaker 3: really looking at the two teams that we're going to face,
- 14:08Speaker 3: especially considering... that in the playoffs right now they're not
- 14:11Speaker 3: going to have a TBD when the Red Sox play
- 14:13Speaker 3: the Yankees for the starting pitcher for the Yankees. We
- 14:16Speaker 3: don't know what George Lombard's going to do. We don't
- 14:19Speaker 3: know if Trevor Story's going to be back, Roman Anthony.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Are we looking at two teams that are actually going
- 14:23Speaker 3: to face each other or just two uniforms that are
- 14:26Speaker 3: going to face each other in the playoffs?
- 14:28Speaker 2: Eric, that's a good way to put it. You didn't
- 14:30Speaker 2: even mention Aaron Judge, who's not going to play this weekend, obviously.
- 14:34Speaker 2: So the point you're making is, are these the teams–
- 14:38Speaker 2: on the field that we're going to see on the
- 14:39Speaker 2: field in October? And the answer to that is almost
- 14:41Speaker 2: certainly no. With the Red Sox, the return of Trevor
- 14:44Speaker 2: Story seems to be imminent. Roman Anthony, that's imminent too,
- 14:48Speaker 2: but the reports this morning are he's still in Worcester,
- 14:51Speaker 2: and he's not going to join the Red Sox, at
- 14:52Speaker 2: least today, for the opener of this series. It's a
- 14:56Speaker 2: four-game series, doubleheader tomorrow. We've got the second game on Fox.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So that alone is different. Garrett Crochet could be back
- 15:04Speaker 2: as a reliever. That's different. And then with the Yankees,
- 15:07Speaker 2: Max Fried, he returns in this series. That's the expectation.
- 15:11Speaker 2: And then what becomes of Judge? Now, you saw the
- 15:14Speaker 2: comments yesterday. He doesn't want to go on a rehabilitation assignment.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I'm sure that's going to be a matter of discussion
- 15:19Speaker 2: between him and the team. But, no, these are not
- 15:23Speaker 2: exactly the teams we're going to see in October. And
- 15:27Speaker 2: there are going to be some differences. With the Yankees, too,
- 15:30Speaker 2: the evolution of the pitching staff, how that's all going
- 15:33Speaker 2: to play is going to be really interesting, too, because
- 15:35Speaker 2: they're down some relievers. Some of their guys are hurt.
- 15:38Speaker 2: They're hoping Clark Schmick comes back. They've got the possibility
- 15:41Speaker 2: of putting Will Warren in the bullpen if their rotation
- 15:44Speaker 2: is healthy enough in the postseason. And then there's Elmer Rodriguez,
- 15:48Speaker 2: who just came up and came back again and looked
- 15:52Speaker 2: much better than he had in his previous outings in this,
- 15:55Speaker 2: his rookie season. So it's a great point that the
- 15:59Speaker 2: teams we're going to see are going to be close
- 16:01Speaker 2: to what we'll see in October, which is only really
- 16:03Speaker 2: a month away at this point, but not exactly the same. Yeah,
- 16:10Speaker 2: for sure.
- 16:10Speaker 3: No, I mean, that's the difference. And Roman Anthony isn't
- 16:14Speaker 3: going to be ready? I mean, I'm clamoring for it.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I don't know that he isn't going to be ready.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It sounds like he's not going to be playing for
- 16:23Speaker 2: the Red Sox tonight. So he's really close, and he's
- 16:27Speaker 2: been out for so long. And remember, when they were
- 16:30Speaker 2: struggling at the start of the season, I talked often
- 16:32Speaker 2: about how they built their team around him, and it
- 16:35Speaker 2: was a flawed premise because he was so young, and
- 16:37Speaker 2: then he gets hurt. Well... They've turned their season around. Obviously,
- 16:41Speaker 2: we've talked about it at Lent. Credit to everyone involved,
- 16:44Speaker 2: including the chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, who I was
- 16:47Speaker 2: hard on. A lot of people were hard on earlier.
- 16:50Speaker 2: But here they are in a great position. I believe
- 16:53Speaker 2: they have an eight-game lead for the final wildcard spot,
- 16:57Speaker 2: so they're going to make the playoffs. And it's one
- 17:00Speaker 2: of the more stunning things we've seen in the game
- 17:03Speaker 2: really in a while. Actually, we seem to see one
- 17:05Speaker 2: of these every year. Cleveland did it last year where
