- 0:04- Hello and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:08My name is Shauna here once again
- 0:10with my fellow Junkie.
- 0:11- Olivia.
- 0:12- Hey.
- 0:14- Hey.
- 0:15- How was your European summer?
- 0:18I guess it was a lead into European fall, but how was it?
- 0:23- It was so good.
- 0:24It was incredible.
- 0:26Oh my God, I can't even begin.
- 0:29Like, Paris, I'm obsessed with.
- 0:31I would go back in a heartbeat.
- 0:33That was definitely my favorite place that we went.
- 0:35- The catacombs?
- 0:36- The catacombs was sick.
- 0:37- Glodrumated out.
- 0:38- Yes, we did not get taken by the,
- 0:41"As Above, So Below" creatures.
- 0:43We did the catacombs, the Eiffel Tower.
- 0:46We saw the Arc
- 0:47De Triomphe, Notre Dame, like everything.
- 0:50- Yeah.
- 0:51- Our flight was delayed 24 hours,
- 0:53so we got one less day than we wanted to
- 0:55and ended up in Boston.
- 0:58- So that was the adventure.
- 1:00- It's been a lot of time in the Utah airport.
- 1:02- Yes, I did too much time.
- 1:05I think we went three days without sleeping in a bed.
- 1:08Like, we slept in just on airplanes
- 1:13and then on like the benches in airports
- 1:16and then Delta gave us little pillows
- 1:18and blankets to curl up with.
- 1:20It was bonkers, but we got to Paris and we're like,
- 1:24"Oh, we got two days to fit in as much as we can.
- 1:26Let's go."
- 1:27And then London, we got to kind of take our time
- 1:30a little more, 'cause we were there for five days
- 1:31and it was wonderful as well.
- 1:33I got to go to a bar.
- 1:36I forgot what it's called,
- 1:37"Holly," the old "Holly" or something.
- 1:39"Holly Arms," there you go.
- 1:41And it's where Amy Winehouse,
- 1:44it's like old stomping grounds
- 1:46in this place called Camden Town and London
- 1:49and it's kind of like the Punk Alternative part of London
- 1:52and they have like a statue of Amy
- 1:55and I did a lot of shopping in that town.
- 1:58Ooh, yeah.
- 1:59I bet you there are some good finds.
- 2:02Yeah, I got these ridiculous jeans after like free beers
- 2:06and I don't know if I'm ever gonna wear them,
- 2:08but they're really cool.
- 2:09They're like covered in sequined patches.
- 2:12Okay, amazing.
- 2:13Yeah, so you needed them.
- 2:14They're really like in pants.
- 2:16So I'm like, "Landan pants."
- 2:18And then Madrid, Madrid was wonderful as well.
- 2:20A little warm.
- 2:22I got the worst travelers diary of my life.
- 2:24(laughing)
- 2:27I.P.S. Gurley.
- 2:30Yeah, that was gonna be my question.
- 2:32How was the eating of the gluten?
- 2:34Did you notice a difference?
- 2:37You know, I don't know.
- 2:38I ate everything without regard for calories and gluten.
- 2:43I just ate joyously and it was wonderful
- 2:46until I got to Madrid and then I had one day
- 2:49where I needed to find a bathroom quite urgently.
- 2:53But that was only one day.
- 2:54And then I was okay to eat all of the toughest again.
- 2:57So thank God for that.
- 2:59Yeah, after that much like drinking and traveling,
- 3:03you're just like, "Oh my God."
- 3:05Yeah, English food.
- 3:07Also, sorry to any of our English listeners, you know?
- 3:11I feel like it's nothing to read home about.
- 3:14So you went Paris, England and Madrid.
- 3:17I had some good food in England.
- 3:20I had like a full English, what, tenando, shout out to Nando's.
- 3:24That was great.
- 3:25But you know, like it's nothing like,
- 3:27we're not like writing.
- 3:29Yeah, writing from about English food.
- 3:31I ate a croissant and I drank in a espresso
- 3:35and had a glass of champagne a day in Paris.
- 3:38Like, that was amazing.
- 3:40The best food I had was definitely Madrid.
- 3:43And my favorite place was Paris.
- 3:46And then London just kind of felt like
- 3:48I was making it my home.
- 3:49So everything was wonderful.
- 3:52I miss you.
- 3:53I feel like I haven't seen you in like a year,
- 3:55but it's probably not long.
- 3:56I know.
- 3:57I know.
- 3:58No, it's been like three weeks since we recorded
- 4:01because you last bit.
- 4:03I know, but I haven't seen you.
- 4:04I haven't held you in like a minute.
- 4:07I know.
- 4:08I know.
- 4:09Well, hopefully we get to see each other when I'm there.
- 4:12I'm Seanate texted me today and was like,
- 4:14when are you coming to Phoenix?
- 4:15And I was like, well, I land tomorrow.
- 4:17And she's like, are you going to fucking tell me?
- 4:20Yeah, I was like, you weren't going to tell me
- 4:21you're coming to Phoenix.
- 4:22I'm starting to find my friends.
- 4:25Like, what's the bug?
- 4:26I'm going to tell you in an hour or in a couple of hours
- 4:29when we're traveling, but no, I'm going to Phoenix
- 4:34to take you to, you know, be watched by my mother.
- 4:38And then I am going to San Diego
- 4:41or one of my best friends wedding.
- 4:44And I'm very, very excited.
- 4:46All that.
- 4:47Yeah.
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:49It is going to be, it's going to be an interesting one.
- 4:51It's going to be my first wedding since my father passed away.
- 4:54So we're going to have to really hold it together
- 4:56during the father daughter dance.
- 4:58But we will persist.
- 5:00And thankfully, it's an open bar.
- 5:02So we're very excited.
- 5:04Are you a bridesmaid?
- 5:05Yeah, I'm a bridesmaid.
- 5:06And it's going to be a beautiful wedding.
- 5:08But I am very, very excited.
- 5:11No, I feel like I have some crazy updates
- 5:14to give you on my life after we're done recording.
- 5:18But I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 5:20And I need to know about this tarot card readings.
- 5:24That's all I'm going to say.
- 5:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:26OK, yeah, yeah.
- 5:27It was not even about that.
- 5:28It's worse.
- 5:29But I do have updates on that side.
- 5:31We can talk about it.
- 5:32I went to Portola Music Festival,
- 5:34and I made out with a boy in the crowd.
- 5:36I was a little tazer there.
- 5:39She made out with a man.
- 5:41I know.
- 5:42A man.
- 5:43A man.
- 5:44A man.
- 5:45A man.
- 5:47A gentleman's suture.
- 5:48So we're entering Romanticie Fall on a good note.
- 5:53Speaking of Romanticie Fall, Threshing Day came out.
- 5:57I'm already re-read it twice.
- 5:59You haven't read it yet.
- 6:00Tell everybody what Threshing Day is for the non-book talk
- 6:02earlier.
- 6:03Yes.
- 6:03So Threshing Day is the--
- 6:07I would say it's like 3.5 book of the fourth wing series
- 6:11by Rebecca Yara.
- 6:13So it is a series.
- 6:16It's like 16 different dragon bonding stories
- 6:21of the characters that we know from fourth wing.
- 6:24Yes.
- 6:25And it is really, really good fourth wing.
- 6:28Follows the protagonist.
- 6:30It's a first person narration, and it's Violet Soran Gayle.
- 6:34So we get to meet everyone else and their dragons
- 6:38and their interpersonal dynamics between them.
- 6:41It is--
- 6:42You've already finished it.
- 6:43I've read it twice.
- 6:44I've read it twice.
- 6:44Oh, yeah.
- 6:45Oh, my God.
- 6:46I have not even gotten it yet.
- 6:49I've only been home to your listeners for four days
- 6:53in Europe.
- 6:55So--
- 6:55And then I--
- 6:56Whoa, wow.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:57And then we immediately got sick.
- 6:59So--
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:01But no.
- 7:01I need to read it, too.
- 7:02I've been texting Jessica every night where I'm like--
- 7:05Did she finish it, too?
- 7:06No.
- 7:07No.
- 7:07She's on chapter two.
- 7:09And I'm like, girlfriend, you're better than this.
- 7:11I like she's a doctor.
- 7:12I expect Sean to--
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:14I expect Sean to be slow.
- 7:15Not Jessica.
- 7:16Jessica, you're listening.
- 7:17Public shaming in the pop culture junkie square.
- 7:20Yes.
- 7:21Public shaming in the podcast.
- 7:22Jessica was in London, and--
- 7:25Well, she was in a different town in Britain.
- 7:29And it took the train--
- 7:30Right, right.
- 7:31--tun.
- 7:32--and took the train three hours to go sing karaoke
- 7:35with me for one night.
- 7:36And it was--
- 7:37Did she stay with you, Rosar?
- 7:39She took the train back.
- 7:41She took the train back.
- 7:42She was with one of her classmates.
- 7:43And they missed their train and then
- 7:45had to take the next one and didn't get home until like three
- 7:48in the morning.
- 7:51And they were definitely there for like a doctor thing.
- 7:54Yeah.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56Where's it?
- 7:56As one does.
- 7:58Well, I think that we could keep gossiping
- 8:01for this entire podcast.
- 8:03But there is something I want to definitely gossip about.
- 8:06And that is the new documentary that just came out
- 8:09on a fooloo called Going Behind the Mirror, The Swan.
- 8:15Oh, so good.
- 8:16This was a documentary about a TV show called The Swan
- 8:21that came out in the early odds.
- 8:23So the early 2000s were a minefield for young women,
- 8:27as we've talked about a lot.
- 8:29With the media showing us extreme dieting culture
- 8:31and an unrealistic beauty standard,
- 8:34that very few people could meet.
- 8:36Fox decided to capitalize on the media's pressure
- 8:39to be perfect by creating a reality show called The Swan,
- 8:44which had a jaw-dropping premise, which
- 8:46was literally take, quote, ugly ducklings,
- 8:50women who were unsatisfied with their appearance,
- 8:53and put them through three months of extreme makeovers,
- 8:57including plastic surgeries, dental work,
- 9:00dieting exercise, quote, therapy.
- 9:04And sessions with a life coach to make them
- 9:08beautiful swans, the ones that they wanted to be.
- 9:11The show ran for two seasons in 2004
- 9:14and was very highly rated in its first season,
- 9:18despite getting a lot of negative breaths.
- 9:20So the hulu documentary The Swan Behind the Mirror
- 9:24has reunited a lot of the contestants, producers,
- 9:27and doctors from both of the seasons
- 9:30to tell us more about how they felt kind of before,
- 9:33during and after, becoming swans.
- 9:37Did you watch The Swan while it was on TV?
- 9:40I did, actually, by mom, and I watched it together.
- 9:44And it truly is one of those shows that is a car crash,
- 9:52that you can't help but watch.
- 9:54And it was so truly addicting.
- 9:59You're just like, oh, my gosh, what is going to happen?
- 10:01I feel like that was probably one of my first introductions
- 10:07to plastic surgery.
- 10:09And the pain that came with it, where I know it was a show
- 10:15that was ultimately promoting plastic surgery,
- 10:18where it was like, oh, OK, if you just have enough money,
- 10:22you can become beautiful, and all your problems
- 10:24will be solved.
- 10:25Look how happy these women are.
- 10:26But for me, I was like, I never want to feel that way.
- 10:31Those women are freaking going through it.
- 10:34And I think that they talk about it in the documentary
- 10:38a bit, but to have that many surgeries in the course of 10 hours.
- 10:44I've had a kidney surgery, and it was medically necessary.
- 10:49And the pain that I felt from one surgery--
- 10:53And that is going through your abdomen and things like that.
- 10:56I cannot even imagine how these women felt to have their nose,
- 11:00their face, their body.
- 11:01Head to toe.
- 11:02Yeah, broken.
- 11:03Their nose, like her cancels done.
- 11:07That's literally from the top of your head to your feet surgery.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11And then to be covering through those with the dental surgery,
- 11:16like all of these things, I think that at the time,
- 11:20I was like, wow, this is crazy.
- 11:22So glad I never feel that way.
- 11:23I was watching it with my mother, but she was very much like,
- 11:26you don't need plastic surgery.
- 11:28You are perfect, the way that you are.
- 11:30And so, thankfully, I had that secondary voice in my head.
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:35It's hard to know it.
- 11:36Look at that and see that.
- 11:37I'm like, well, they're happy.
- 11:39Dude, absolutely.
- 11:41I watched it too.
- 11:42And same that you said, it's like a car crash.
- 11:45It feels like a fever dream now, thinking back to watching that,
- 11:49and that it was actually on television.
- 11:51Along with that show, where they were on stage,
- 11:53and they'd have a laser pointer and point it like their cellulite,
- 11:57and their gray hairs, do you remember that show?
- 11:59Granny panties.
- 12:00Yeah, yeah.
- 12:01Holy shit.
- 12:02Granny panties.
- 12:03I do remember like the gray, circular motion,
- 12:07and just being like, God, don't.
- 12:09Yeah, we can.
- 12:10On the swan when it would yell like laser in on them.
- 12:12Oh my God.
- 12:13Yeah.
- 12:14I watched it, and I definitely kind of felt the same as you,
- 12:17just like, this sounds awful.
- 12:19I never want, I've never had a surgery now.
- 12:22Like, I've never been under the night.
- 12:24I've had like fillers and injectables in my face,
- 12:27and I had a wisdom tooth removed.
- 12:29But I've never had like a major, like, under anesthesia situation.
- 12:33It's because it scares me, and I don't, you know,
- 12:35thankfully I haven't needed it.
- 12:37But like, I do remember being a kid and her young lady,
- 12:40I guess I should say, a kid and wanting breast implants really bad.
- 12:45I just wanted huge knockers.
- 12:47Yeah.
- 12:48And I would be like, Britney Spears has huge boobs,
- 12:51and she's probably got breast implants, and my mom was like,
- 12:54just wait to go through puberty.
- 12:57Oh my God.
- 12:58Maybe if you have children, you'll come.
- 13:01But like, yeah, the way that it just made them seem like they
- 13:05were so miserable and ugly in the before,
- 13:09and then so happy and beautiful.
- 13:12And as we dive into the documentary,
- 13:14like, it has a lot of the contestants who are on the swan.
- 13:18And a lot of them were told to kind of like,
- 13:20play up their reactions when they saw themselves.
- 13:24So they don't let these women see themselves in the mirror
- 13:27for three months for the uninitiated.
- 13:30They take these women who apply to be on the show.
- 13:34Like 250,000 people applied to be a person swan originally.
- 13:40And they positioned it very differently than like what it was,
- 13:45right?
- 13:46So it was a show marketed like try out to transform yourself
- 13:52inside and out.
- 13:54Basically like you apply to be a part of this,
- 13:56and you can get any of the plastic surgery that you want.
- 14:00You'll get therapy.
- 14:01You'll get exercise training.
- 14:02You'll get a life coach dental work.
- 14:05And it will follow your journey of self love and becoming the woman
- 14:11you always wanted to be.
- 14:13And you know what?
- 14:14Free dental care for somebody who needs it and free therapy.
- 14:17Hell yeah, let's go.
- 14:19And so it's very understandable.
- 14:22And even plus pre-flussed surgery, sure.
- 14:25Like it's understandable that women who are feeling insecure,
- 14:27especially in an era where we fed off of women's insecurities,
- 14:32like just picked them apart.
- 14:35Like, of course they were going to apply.
- 14:37Yeah, if you're over 110 pounds, you're a fat cow.
- 14:40You're fat.
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:42We don't believe that.
- 14:43Yeah.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:45No.
- 14:46And now again, listen to our episode on the coming back of skinny cultures.
- 14:53Yeah.
- 14:54Anyway, so they would take these women, put them in apartments,
- 14:57which these ladies would later call pretty prison.
- 15:00They weren't allowed to talk to their families.
- 15:01They weren't allowed to look in the mirror.
- 15:03Any reflective things like CDs, they take away from them.
- 15:07They were just kind of cut off from society in this lovely apartment.
- 15:12And they would go to the plastic surgeon and he'd tell them everything they needed to get
- 15:16to.
- 15:17All this took place over 90 days, right?
- 15:18Yeah.
- 15:19And so think about this, right?
- 15:21They are having insane plastic surgery.
- 15:25They're also forcing these women to go to the gym to work out.
- 15:30And insane.
- 15:31And twice a day workouts.
- 15:34So by the end of the 90 days, they were competing in this pageant.
- 15:39And so just think about that.
- 15:40Like people who get lipos, like BBL, things like that.
- 15:45Healing time is like six months.
- 15:48You're not even really allowed to sit for a while.
- 15:51And so like they're restricting calories.
- 15:54They're forcing them to go to the gym all while healing from a incredibly traumatic surgeries
- 16:01across their body.
- 16:02These women got, yeah, like a tummy tuck is a major abdominal surgery, right?
- 16:07I've had a lot of two come to us.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:11And they tell you, after you get like Botox and fillers that you can't go to the gym for
- 16:14at least three days.
- 16:17Like, you know, that's just for getting things shot into your face.
- 16:22You are not, and it shows the women at the gym, like you said, doing two workouts a day.
- 16:28And they're in full.
- 16:29Like they still have their bandages from their nose jobs, from their heads, wraps from
- 16:33their chin, lipo, their abdominal lipo.
- 16:36You are not supposed to be sweating and working out and stretching your body like that.
- 16:41Well, and we heard women talking about like how they were like, we felt unwell, like our
- 16:46faces were burning and all of this.
- 16:48But the only time we were allowed to interact with people outside of our like roommate that
- 16:55we had, because they were assigned with like one girl, because God forbid they each get
- 16:59their own fucking room.
- 17:00I know, right?
- 17:02That probably saved their sanity though, honestly.
- 17:04Yeah, true.
- 17:05Yeah, otherwise they were just completely alone.
- 17:10And it's one thing that came out of it, I guess, is good.
- 17:13Is all these women feel like they have like a little sisterhood now?
- 17:17They're like a trauma, or this one, they all trauma bonded.
- 17:20Yeah.
- 17:21So, you know, at least they had a friend.
- 17:23Yeah.
- 17:24And so the only other time that they were allowed to interact with people outside of their
- 17:29like roommate was with inside of the gym.
- 17:33And then they had this life coach who had come in and she was the executive producer.
- 17:40She came from more like a telemundo network where this style of show was quite common.
- 17:46So extreme makeovers coming in and so she kind of adapted that into an American audience.
- 17:53And she would come in again, these women just went through major surgeries and be like,
- 17:57you have to lose 30 pounds by the end of this.
- 18:00And it's like, well, why don't you just take the 30 pounds in the life of like what do you mean?
- 18:05Like, I mean, but it was all produced for television and she was really kind of like the like
- 18:13evil woman, the male trainer inside the gym was you know, a little intense as well.
- 18:18But the first season really didn't know what it was.
- 18:22They did promise like therapy, but it was therapy light.
- 18:26Yeah. And they did say in the documentary that like they really enjoyed talking to the
- 18:30therapist, but I think that was because they got somebody to just talk to, right?
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:36And it was Nelly Gallant.
- 18:37She's the creator like anytime they talked to Nelly, of course, she's going to you need
- 18:41to lose 30 more pounds and she know what life coaching in tail and the plastic surgeons
- 18:48were just there to oh my god, the plastic surgeons in this documentary were such things.
- 18:53We need to talk.
- 18:54Okay.
- 18:55So bro, you probably know him from botched or real housewives of the OC.
- 19:01That's like it is.
- 19:02That's like the Millenium from bot.
- 19:04Yes.
- 19:05Yes.
- 19:06Yeah.
- 19:07So he is from botched.
- 19:08I think that Terry, do bro has always been a little fame hungry as well.
- 19:12He's like a celebrity plastic surgeon.
- 19:15And he is so charismatic.
- 19:18And he has always kind of played the nice guy.
- 19:21And within the show itself, he was the nice plastic surgeon and the other guy.
- 19:27What was his doctor?
- 19:28Dr. Hayworth is he was Dr. Hayworth.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:31He was the one that was the dick or the whole documentary disgusting.
- 19:34Disgusting.
- 19:35Dehumanizing these women, he compares them to toilets at one point where the blimmers
- 19:41come again and unclogging and even the documentary person who is like interview, the interviewer
- 19:46was like, did you just compare women to toilets?
- 19:49Yeah.
- 19:50And he like smiles.
- 19:51He's like, yeah.
- 19:53He thought that he was just performing miracles on these hideous women who just needed to
- 20:00be beautiful.
- 20:02So did you catch the one point where they start talking about season two and they come in
- 20:07and he's like, you know, ever since I started having dogs, I really developed empathy.
- 20:17And he's like, thanks to my second ex-wife, she was obsessed with dogs.
- 20:22So I got dogs and I see her so upset and it just makes me so sad for her.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:29I developed empathy after having dogs.
- 20:31I can see these women more as human beings because I really like my dogs.
- 20:36Fuck you.
- 20:37Yeah.
- 20:38Oh my God.
- 20:39It would come off.
- 20:40I would never want some man like that touching my body with a scalpel, right?
- 20:44You know what?
- 20:45It's women, my nose, laying absolutely not.
- 20:48Yeah.
- 20:49It was kind of implied that what the plastic surgeon said, you needed to get done, you were
- 20:55going to get done.
- 20:56You couldn't really talk back.
- 20:58There was one woman on the documentary, one of the swans who said, I don't want you to
- 21:02touch my nose.
- 21:03I like my nose the way it is.
- 21:05And they didn't do it.
- 21:06They needed her medical consent, obviously, and they didn't do it.
- 21:10But of course, she didn't get picked for the pageant and she even said that she's like,
- 21:14I knew I wasn't going to pick for the pageant because I wouldn't let them touch my nose
- 21:17if they thought needed an overhaul.
- 21:21They told her that they wanted her to be the oldest woman participating in a beauty
- 21:26project.
- 21:27And she was like, I don't give a fuck.
- 21:28You're not changing my entire face structure, yeah, literally.
- 21:33And again, they kept these women so isolated.
- 21:36So this woman was like, no, I don't want that.
- 21:39And so she felt a lot of guilt about it because they were trying to do a double surgery on
- 21:45her at once.
- 21:46So they would have had Terry do bro and Dr. Hayward work on her where Hayward was on her
- 21:51face.
- 21:52Dobro was working on her body.
- 21:55She refused and they did it to another woman who is heavily involved in the documentary.
- 22:01And just think about that, right?
- 22:03Someone is like sculpting the bones in your face, breaking your nose.
- 22:08And then someone is like literally sucking fat out of your body all the same time.
- 22:15And yeah, I mean, just an insane amount of trauma happening to the body.
- 22:21And yeah, I mean, I think that even to this day, Dr. Hayward has no remorse, doesn't feel
- 22:28bad.
- 22:29He is a P O S.
- 22:31I feel like Dr. Terry do bro was smart to not participate in this.
- 22:36I think he's really kind of rehabbed his image since this one with botched and then his
- 22:42wife being on real housewives.
- 22:45But yeah, overall, I think that it's pretty disgusting.
- 22:49We have some of these producers who are involved in season one, really realizing what they did.
- 22:55And yeah, kind of the escalation from season one to season two.
- 23:00So season one was horrible enough.
- 23:02Yeah.
- 23:03And then it was such a hit and it really just escalated.
- 23:07How do we one up it?
- 23:08How do we make it worse?
- 23:10Let's take a quick break.
- 23:12And then I want to talk about some of the most damning revelations that came out of this
- 23:17documentary and just kind of the impact that it, you know, I don't, the viewers were watching
- 23:22this crap.
- 23:23So we will be right back.
- 23:27Hey, you.

- 23:59So welcome back to our discussion about the swan and the documentary behind the mirror
- 24:07this one.
- 24:08We are going to talk about some of the most messed up things that came to light from this
- 24:13documentary.
- 24:14One of the most major ones is that a season two contestant almost died.
- 24:19Yeah.
- 24:20So that's that's kind of fucked up.
- 24:23Just a little bit.
- 24:25She says in the documentary, I almost died for reality television.
- 24:29I feel like that's not even shocking anymore.
- 24:32I feel like so many people.
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:36So her name is Carrie Bravada.
- 24:38She nearly died on set after waking up from anesthesia.
- 24:41Her oxygen levels plummeted and her lungs filled with fluid rather than stopping production
- 24:47to prioritize her life.
- 24:48The camera crew filled the medical emergency until they were eventually ordered out of
- 24:54the operating room.
- 24:55So this is also the woman whose sister was also on this one, but she didn't know and they
- 25:01weren't allowed to communicate with each other.
- 25:04So that was kind of sad.
- 25:05Yeah.
- 25:06She almost died.
- 25:07I mean, you can only be under anesthesia for like 10 hours max.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13And they're doing fucking so many surgeries on these women at once.
- 25:17It's like no wonder like my god is horrifying.
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:22And just to give you guys kind of like an idea.
- 25:24I know we've said like so many surgeries, but the average amount of surgeries performed
- 25:28on each woman was 10 to 15.
- 25:32And like we mentioned, like they were in back to back oftentimes done at the same time.
- 25:38And they were either doing like liposuction, lase, sick, intense dental work within the
- 25:43same ones or within days apart.
- 25:46And your body really doesn't have a time to come back from that.
- 25:50They were facing severe risk.
- 25:53Like hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, fatal blood cells, like I think a Heidi Pratt, Spencer
- 25:58Pratt, Heidi Montag.
- 26:00She did something very similar.
- 26:02You know, after the swan show where she had an insane amount of plastic surgery back to
- 26:08back and all at once and really put her body through such as severe trauma and through
- 26:14any surgery, like healing is so important.
- 26:16And if you're kind of repeatedly doing that.
- 26:19And it just made it so normal.
- 26:21And you're like, well, I saw 15 women go through it.
- 26:24It should be fine.
- 26:25They healed in 90 days.
- 26:27Yeah.
- 26:28They didn't really set makeup.
- 26:30Yeah.
- 26:31Yeah.
- 26:32Absolutely.
- 26:33And so, you know, there is movie magic happening there.
- 26:35And it's a fine line of, look how terrible this was for them.
- 26:39But now they're beautiful.
- 26:40And look how good they look.
- 26:41Yeah.
- 26:42It was worth it.
- 26:43Beauty is pain.
- 26:45A lot of these women faced long-term consequences, like specifically on like dental
- 26:51surgeries and things like that.
- 26:53Like they just immediately were like, everybody gets veneers, inventors have a lot of upkeep
- 26:59and maintenance and yeah, dude, it was difficult.
- 27:02That takes us right into the next horrific thing that came out about this was the dental
- 27:07damage.
- 27:08The dental overhalls were described by director Aaron Lee Carr as the most brutal element
- 27:13of the show.
- 27:14Healthy viable teeth were aggressively sought down to stubs or completely extracted to
- 27:18make room for veneers.
- 27:21Essentially every single woman on this show got veneers whether she needed them or not.
- 27:25And years later contestants are facing severe physical and financial consequences from these
- 27:32kind of rush jobs of these veneers.
- 27:34The dentist who did them is not even practicing anymore.
- 27:37She lost her license.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40Wonder why.
- 27:41Right.
- 27:42So, some of these women needed full dentures by the time they turned 45 because their natural
- 27:47teeth are rotting underneath the veneers.
- 27:50Another contestant said she spent $10,000 just maintaining the work that they did to your teeth.
- 27:56That was absolutely unnecessary.
- 27:58So that's horrifying.
- 27:59Yeah.
- 28:00And it's not just veneers, right?
- 28:01Like they were like shaving down their gums like a really, really intense surgery.
- 28:08And I feel like nowadays veneers are very normalized and common.
- 28:14But to get veneers, you lose your natural teeth forever.
- 28:18So it is almost like a sinking pit.
- 28:21You have to continue as high keep replacing them.
- 28:24And then once those little nubs of teeth are gone or rot it or whatever, like you are, you
- 28:31know, out of teeth moving forward, right?
- 28:34There's so many celebrities who I'm, we talked about this for.
- 28:38I miss normal teeth.
- 28:39I miss celebrities with just natural teeth.
- 28:42I love Kirsten Dunst teeth.
- 28:44Oh my God.
- 28:45I know.
- 28:46She never touches those.
- 28:47But yeah, everyone's just got little chiklets now for teeth.
- 28:50Yeah.
- 28:51Yeah.
- 28:52And it's tempting, right?
- 28:53Like you always see things and you're like, oh, that would be nice.
- 28:56But with most things, there's always a consequence and not a consequence, but a potential
- 29:02downfall.
- 29:03Oh, for sure.
- 29:04With an plastic surgery or adverse effects.
- 29:07100%.
- 29:08You mentioned the agent that all the ladies competed in when they were first put into this
- 29:13show.
- 29:14They weren't old.
- 29:15They were going to be an effigient.
- 29:16They all kind of formed this bond with each other because all they had was each other, right?
- 29:22They're roommates and in a gym like you mentioned.
- 29:24And then further down the line, they were told, oh, there's going to be an elimination.
- 29:29And they pitted them against one another oftentimes with like their best friend on the show.
- 29:34One of them was eliminated for not being good enough or for not getting that nose job.
- 29:40And then they had to do this beauty patch.
- 29:42Which involved a lingerie portion, like what beauty pageant has a lingerie portion in it?
- 29:49Like, no, that's not a thing.
- 29:52Yeah.
- 29:53And within the first season, like halfway through, they decided that they wanted to add in this
- 29:59beauty pageant and try to put these women against each other.
- 30:04And so this was the level of psychological torture that these people were doing.
- 30:10And like, we have, what's his name?
- 30:12It's either Arthur Smith or Kent Weave.
- 30:14They're both producers on the show.
- 30:15It was a very controversial box reality TV producer and just kept trying to raise the bar.
- 30:22And this was his idea.
- 30:24And thankfully, these women's relationships persisted and they have each other throughout
- 30:29it.
- 30:30But really, season one women really didn't know what they were going into.
- 30:33Season two, I would say the same thing because every reality TV show in the 2000s wanted
- 30:39to one up the other shows and then continue to one up itself.
- 30:45And there was always a thing about elimination.
- 30:47I mean, I guess that's very popular in reality shows even today, even cooking shows or baking
- 30:52shows.
- 30:53You get eliminated until you find a winner.
- 30:56But I think these women, because they had such extreme physical search are now done today.
- 31:04But is his name Mike Jarnal?
- 31:06Mike Jarnal.
- 31:07Box reality TV programming and continuous push producers to be more intense and continue
- 31:13to play with people's lives ultimately like we saw with Carrie.
- 31:19And I think that it is such an interesting show to look back on.
- 31:25I mean, the amount of psychological damage that these women went under the first season
- 31:31winner in the pageant, she was just like, I don't even want to win.
- 31:35I don't want to be labeled as a woman.
- 31:37She was the runner up.
- 31:38I tried to find information on the woman who won and she's gone off the grid.
- 31:43Like she wasn't in the documentary either.
- 31:46And I think that's just, yeah, I mean, she's, these women have had their entire lives changed.
- 31:50I mean, they're all beautiful now, but you they definitely look like women who have had
- 31:53some work done, which is, you know, totally fine.
- 31:55But like they're watching these videos of themselves in the pageant and on the show and just
- 32:00crying.
- 32:01I feel bad for her that she thought she was so idiot.
- 32:04That she had to reconstruct her entire face on television and her entire body really.
- 32:10Those women were just moms, right?
- 32:12Yeah.
- 32:13And like military women.
- 32:14Yeah, you didn't need to look like Britney Spears.
- 32:17Yeah, but that's what we were told back then.
- 32:19Yeah.
- 32:20And I think we've talked about this so many times with like the rise of like fascist politics
- 32:25becomes the rise of women having to be more skinny and have bigger boobs and like
- 32:29they're more commodified or more dehumanized and just boil down to our appearance.
- 32:34And I think we're seeing that now when we saw that like in the early arts.
- 32:38So do you think a show like this would ever lie nowadays?
- 32:42No, I don't, I don't necessarily think so.
- 32:45I think that, you know, just to bring up like botched, for example, I think that instead
- 32:52of we're going to pay for all your plastic surgery, it's like you are someone who is obsessed
- 32:58with plastic surgery and look how stupid that was of you.
- 33:01Like I think it's changed in a way, but I do think that we have rather than a plastic surgery
- 33:08like health and fitness like, yeah, like all these people who are so dedicated and if you
- 33:13were just dedicated enough, like you could get there too.
- 33:16You know, we don't have the biggest loser anymore, but like it's evolved into different
- 33:22formats.
- 33:23And I think that something will rear its head back around, but less crazy of like life threatening.
- 33:30I totally agree.
- 33:31I hope it never comes back.
- 33:32No, oh my God, no, I agree.
- 33:34I don't think that it would ever lie in like the format that we had to grow up watching
- 33:39it.
- 33:40Thank God for all the other 10 year old girls.
- 33:42I mean, not 10.
- 33:43In 2004, I was a freshman in high school.
- 33:47So I was right in that.
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:49But like, thank God that, you know, girls that are that age now don't have to watch this.
- 33:53But they have so much other stuff that they have to watch.
- 33:56And I think you make a good point with like the health and wellness thing.
- 33:59I could totally see a like don't die.
- 34:02How to rewind age.
- 34:04Or the Rex.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:06Yeah.
- 34:07Let's get you as well as possible and as healthy as possible.
- 34:10We take 10 women who want to transform their lives from the inside out.
- 34:16Yeah.
- 34:17That's like all the social media now.
- 34:20Yeah.
- 34:21It's just the things instead of a reality show that we see in little clips on TikTok and
- 34:25Instagram now.
- 34:26So it's boiled down to the attention spans of, you know, young ladies today.
- 34:31So big peptide.
- 34:32They're common.
- 34:33They are common, man.
- 34:35Yeah.
- 34:36We can 10 women on O'sympic and give them therapy and change their lives.
- 34:42That's the tanning ever.
- 34:44We give them the tanning peptide.
- 34:46Oh.
- 34:47The skinny peptide.
- 34:48Yeah.
- 34:49Just put them all in there.
- 34:51Nobody takes this.
- 34:52Somebody's going to be watching.
- 34:55We're kidding.
- 34:56Yeah.
- 34:57We're kidding.
- 34:58We're kidding.
- 34:59Mike Darnell is listening to the show and he's like, damn, these girls are on something.
- 35:02He's like, "We are on something.
- 35:03We are on something."
- 35:04Right that down.
- 35:05Right that down.
- 35:06So thank God this one is gone and has sung its swan song into pop culture graveyard where
- 35:17hot or not and all of those disgusting shows can live in pop culture held together.
- 35:26Any last thoughts Olivia on this one?
- 35:29No, I think that among most things within the 2000s that was a very sad time and I don't
- 35:40think that our want to watch car crashes in real life or tragic things and kind of throw
- 35:49stones at other people has gone away.
- 35:52I think that it continues to persist within human nature.
- 35:56It's the little leaps that we do see made within reality TV.
- 36:02You know, it's a it's a teeter.
- 36:05And so I think we'll continue to see that maybe in a little bit more of a politically correct
- 36:09time for now, but in 20 years we'll look back and be like, "What the hell were we doing?"
- 36:15And so yeah, I think that the more that we can continue to be like, who benefits from
- 36:19this and who wins from this level of messaging against women will always be the North Star
- 36:26in pop culture.
- 36:29Yeah.
- 36:30Well said.
- 36:31Remember, it's always the capitalists that win.
- 36:34Yeah.
- 36:35And you hate yourself.
- 36:36They win when you hate yourself ladies and gentlemen.
- 36:39Yeah.
- 36:40So I think that is a wrap on this episode deconstructing the swan.
- 36:44Remember junkies, we think you are beautiful just as you are and however you choose to present
- 36:50yourself.
