- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show Mike, Chris Pino,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Jim Mora. Every Tuesday, we'll talk with Wes ho and
- 0:05Speaker 1: Matt Hoffman a little bit. Coach, I want to ask
- 0:08Speaker 1: you a little bit about your background. I mean, you've
- 0:11Speaker 1: been around a lot of folks. Know what you've done
- 0:13Speaker 1: in the NFL, head coach, assistant, all the jobs you've had.
- 0:17Speaker 1: But I'm really interested in some of the people you've
- 0:19Speaker 1: worked with over the years. I mean, Mike Hombring comes
- 0:22Speaker 1: to mind. Tell me about that guy, because I mean,
- 0:25Speaker 1: as an opposing fan watching his teams, I always knew,
- 0:29Speaker 1: uh oh, these guys are going to bring something to
- 0:31Speaker 1: the table that we don't know about. Yeah.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I got to coach against him for a long time,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and then I got to be on his staff, which
- 0:38Speaker 2: is really cool. He's incredibly smart, and he's just got
- 0:42Speaker 2: this great combination of being demanding of the players and
- 0:47Speaker 2: yet you know, being a fatherlike figure to him at
- 0:51Speaker 2: certain times. He's a great play caller. I mean, he
- 0:54Speaker 2: really keeps you off balance as a play caller, and
- 0:57Speaker 2: you know, he's around some great ones and obviously learned
- 0:59Speaker 2: and he develop up his own system. But I loved
- 1:02Speaker 2: being around my congrin I really kind of learned a
- 1:04Speaker 2: lot from him about how to manage a team, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and not saying too much and saying just enough, and
- 1:11Speaker 2: because sometimes coaches can get away with the raw ross stuff,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and Mike just did a really good job of being
- 1:16Speaker 2: hard on the guys and demanding and yet keeping perspective.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's funny you say that, I would have
- 1:22Speaker 1: guessed something like that, but I didn't know. Dick Formeal
- 1:25Speaker 1: one of my favorites of all time. That guy. It
- 1:28Speaker 1: seemed like when he would give you something at a
- 1:32Speaker 1: press conference or whatever after practice, you'd feel like glued
- 1:36Speaker 1: to him because you knew he was being genuine. I
- 1:39Speaker 1: love that about him.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I mean, my relationship with Coach for Meal
- 1:43Speaker 2: is different than a lot of those guys because I've
- 1:45Speaker 2: known him since I was a kid. My dad and
- 1:47Speaker 2: coach Vermeil coach together at UCLA when I was like
- 1:50Speaker 2: twelve years old. And so interesting to go from a
- 1:52Speaker 2: twelve year old looking up to Coach for Meal to
- 1:55Speaker 2: playing against him when he was the head coach of
- 1:57Speaker 2: the Kansas City Chiefs and I was the head coach
- 1:59Speaker 2: of the Atlanta Falcons. You know, like wow, but we're
- 2:02Speaker 2: still very close. You know, when you think of coach
- 2:04Speaker 2: for Meal, it's just his passion, his emotion, his love
- 2:07Speaker 2: for the game, and his love for the players that
- 2:09Speaker 2: he coached, you know, And he's just like that in life.
- 2:12Speaker 2: You know, Kathy and I were in Napa this summer
- 2:16Speaker 2: and coach for mel You know, he has a winery
- 2:18Speaker 2: and I sent him a picture from the winery. Next thing,
- 2:22Speaker 2: you know, he's got me talking to the GM about
- 2:25Speaker 2: trying to you know, get into a special dinner. And
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he's one of those guys that's
- 2:30Speaker 2: just he's always given of himself to other people.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And quick final thought, yeah, you mentioned this in your
- 2:34Speaker 1: press conference, Bobby Bethard, because now you're almost a coach
- 2:38Speaker 1: slash general manager. The college form is now almost pro like,
- 2:43Speaker 1: so a guy like him must have left an impression.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and he was. He was really the He's
- 2:48Speaker 2: the second general manager I worked for. And Bobby was
- 2:51Speaker 2: a great personnel guy like he he could find the
- 2:54Speaker 2: hidden gems, you know, like he never counted a guy out.
- 2:57Speaker 2: You know, some some people might say, well, he doesn't fit,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you know, he's a little too short, he's a little
- 3:01Speaker 2: too light, or maybe he's not quite fast enough. And Bobby,
- 3:05Speaker 2: instead of looking for the reasons a guy couldn't play,
- 3:07Speaker 2: he was looking for the reasons a guy could play.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And Bobby had great energy. He was always upbeat and positive,
- 3:14Speaker 2: great family guy, just a huge workout guy, stayed in shape.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I mean, you know, and he's you know, rest in
- 3:20Speaker 2: peace Bobby's past. And just just like I think back
- 3:24Speaker 2: and I go, how freaking fortunate were you to be
- 3:27Speaker 2: able to learn from some of these guys, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and really get an understanding what it looks like when
- 3:33Speaker 2: the best are doing it, and to strive to be
- 3:35Speaker 2: that way every day, and you know, falling short every
- 3:38Speaker 2: day of some of these greats there in the Hall
- 3:40Speaker 2: of Fame, but still knowing what it looks like. I
- 3:42Speaker 2: was really really lucky.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, man. And I feel the same thing about your
- 3:46Speaker 1: players in watching you work at what you're doing right now.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Your background, your experience, all that stuff. Really you know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: if players absorb it, it's gonna help them. It's going
- 3:56Speaker 1: to help them get better and have great lives and
- 3:59Speaker 1: great careers all that stuff. So it all comes it's
- 4:01Speaker 1: part of your whole background, and it comes out in
- 4:04Speaker 1: what you do, and we all appreciate it and want
- 4:07Speaker 1: to let you know that.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Thank you. All right, Well, that's I think one of
- 4:10Speaker 2: the great things about college football is you get that opportunity,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you know, to affect young men's lives in a positive
- 4:17Speaker 2: way based on the experiences you've had. And as I said,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I've been so fortunate, so blessed to be around so
- 4:23Speaker 2: many really good people that were really good at what
- 4:25Speaker 2: they did in this business, whether it's coaches, players, or
- 4:28Speaker 2: general managers, presidents, owners or otherwise. And so to just
- 4:32Speaker 2: think that maybe you can just pass along a little
- 4:34Speaker 2: bit of what you learn from them is pretty dang awesome,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know. And most of these guys aren't going to
- 4:40Speaker 2: get a chance to go do this for a living.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Hopefully as many as we can get to the NFL,
- 4:44Speaker 2: we do. But it's more about how you affect their
- 4:47Speaker 2: life in a positive way.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Well, it's all showing, coach, we appreciate it. We'll talk
- 4:52Speaker 1: to you good luck. On the weekend. We'll be back
- 4:54Speaker 1: with more of the Yukon Football Coaches Show on liar
