- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We are taking a one week break
- 0:20from our study in Isaiah and we're just going over some of my
- 0:23favorite passages of Scripture. It's a little bit of a busy
- 0:28season for me personally and so wanted to, if you will have some
- 0:33easy, easy passages that I could record through for this week
- 0:39while I am gone at a pastors and wives couples retreat with
- 0:43Samantha. It's our first kind of couples
- 0:45thing that we have been to together and so praying for the
- 0:50future that I really enjoy this great time and I'm looking
- 0:53forward to see how the Lord will use it today.
- 0:56We are in Philippians chapter 2 verses 5 through 11.
- 1:00Philippians chapter 2, verses 5 through 11.
- 1:04This is a letter from the Apostle Paul as well as his son
- 1:09in the faith, Timothy, and they are writing to the church at
- 1:13Philippi. This was a very special city
- 1:18that was located kind of in the Greece, Macedonia region, but
- 1:26had a ton of former Roman soldiers who were given land in
- 1:34or around Philippi as a result of their military service.
- 1:39So it was a very civically proud area.
- 1:43You could think of it. You know, we're, we're pretty
- 1:46close to DC here. And so we even have some
- 1:49different people that serve in the armed forces, several people
- 1:53within even my church at Tabernacle that have family
- 1:58members that serve. And so it's a very civically
- 2:01proud area. And this was one of the first
- 2:05places on the European continent that Paul and Timothy had served
- 2:11and and ministered. God specifically calling them
- 2:14there. They were there, they preached.
- 2:17God was doing some cool things. They were arrested and they were
- 2:21imprisoned. They were beaten, which Paul was
- 2:24not allowed to be beaten as a result of him being a Roman
- 2:28citizen. He had Silas with him.
- 2:31Timothy was also there. Timothy was not arrested or
- 2:33beaten, but Paul and Silas were. And at midnight in the jail, as
- 2:40Paul and Silas were singing and praying together out loud in
- 2:46that in that jail, an earthquake happened, released them from
- 2:50their socks. They stayed there.
- 2:52The Philippian jailer thought that everyone was, you know,
- 2:55just going to book it out of the jail and that he would be killed
- 2:59for negligence, for allowing the prisoners to escape.
- 3:02And so he almost killed himself with his sword, but Paul told
- 3:06him, hey, don't, don't do that. We are all still here.
- 3:10And he asked themselves, what must I do to be saved?
- 3:13And he says, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be
- 3:15saved and your household. And so God did some awesome
- 3:19things there in Philippi. And so this is a letter that
- 3:23Paul and Timothy are now writing to this church.
- 3:25And they encourage the people to be unified together.
- 3:29And we read this in verse #5 adopt the same attitude, the
- 3:35same mindset as that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form
- 3:42of God, did not consider equality with God as something
- 3:47to be exploited. Instead, he emptied himself by
- 3:51assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of
- 3:56humanity. And when he had come as a man,
- 3:59he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,
- 4:04even to death on a cross. For this reason, God has highly
- 4:10exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,
- 4:15so that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow in heaven
- 4:21and on earth and under the earth and every tongue will confess
- 4:25that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 4:31So I wanted to take just a moment and talk through this
- 4:35passage and, and why I love it so much.
- 4:38I love that all of this, this incredible doxology that is
- 4:43praised to God, it is expressed as something that we are to
- 4:50emulate. There is a mindset that the
- 4:53Christian, the child of God is called to have and it is have
- 4:57the mindset that Jesus had. OK, well what was that mindset?
- 5:01It was a mindset that though he was deserving of everything, he
- 5:06did not choose to assert his rights.
- 5:10He chose to humble himself. He became pitiable, he became
- 5:16someone lowly looked down on certainly from God it and if God
- 5:23had become an Angel that that would be, you know, a step down,
- 5:28but he became a man. He became a creature that if you
- 5:33will didn't have the cool 6 wings flying around, you know
- 5:38the throne saying holy, holy, holy like we read in Isaiah sex.
- 5:43He is not one that came and you know struck people with
- 5:47blindness like the angels when they came to the cities of Sodom
- 5:52and Gomorrah. Instead Jesus came and he took
- 5:56on himself the form of a servant.
- 5:59Think about it this way, for the 1st 27 to 30 years depending on
- 6:05how old Jesus was at the end of his life.
- 6:08For those first 2 1/2 three decades of Jesus's life, we know
- 6:15almost nothing about that time period other than as Jesus does
- 6:21his ministry. When he comes back into the area
- 6:25that he grew up in, they say isn't this the carpenter's son?
- 6:31Isn't this the Carpenter? The word is technon.
- 6:35It's it's like a Craftsman. Depending on the area that would
- 6:39involve more stone work or like stone masonry versus straight up
- 6:46like carpentry, woodworking depending on the area and what
- 6:49resources were available. So just in case you guys ever
- 6:53hear someone refer to Jesus as like a stone Mason or a
- 6:57Craftsman as opposed to a Carpenter, they're not
- 7:00downplaying anything about him. It just depending on the area in
- 7:04which you lived in, the resources that were available
- 7:06that kind of defined what a technon was.
- 7:09That's I'm going to use a little bit of a transliteration.
- 7:13It's like TEKNONTEKNON technon. So Jesus, he just served, and he
- 7:23who had all power and all authority chose to make stuff
- 7:29for other people. The one that created all of the
- 7:34cosmos walked places thinking about the humility of Jesus that
- 7:43the one who could do anything chose to come, teach, love,
- 7:48serve, work and ultimately die for us.
- 7:53What humility is there within this person of Jesus and here
- 7:57Paul and Timothy say have that mindset as you interact with
- 8:02other people in your church. I love what he says in verse
- 8:05number six who existing in the form of God.
- 8:08So he goes, we all know this, Jesus is God, but God the Son
- 8:15did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited
- 8:21or used for his own advantage. He could have just said, all
- 8:26right, you know, angels attend me, everyone bring me authority
- 8:33and worship. He could have done that, but he
- 8:36didn't. Far too often within our
- 8:40churches, within our families, within our jobs, we want all of
- 8:44the attention on us. And we want people to think well
- 8:48of us, to shower us with compliments, that they would
- 8:52allow us to do everything that we ever want to do, that we
- 8:56would be the center of attention.
- 8:58But that's not the way that Jesus lived.
- 9:01And so here Scripture encourages us.
- 9:03Let's not live that way. Let's have a humility that no
- 9:07matter whether you're like, hey, I've been saved for 75 years and
- 9:12so everyone better serve me. No, God himself didn't have that
- 9:16mindset. So let's not have that mindset
- 9:18personally. Or you might say, man, I'm the
- 9:21most gifted order. I know more than everyone else
- 9:24here, God would say serve. Like even me as the pastor, I
- 9:29want to always be faithful to serve, that there wouldn't be
- 9:34anything that is too lowly. There should be nothing off
- 9:37limits for me to do in caring for and serving and loving other
- 9:42people. I know that there's a kind of a
- 9:46balancing game, even, as you know, we consider Act 6 and lots
- 9:52of good things to do in life. And the apostles, they're
- 9:56commissioning the deacons or kind of those like proto
- 10:00deacons, as they say. It would not be fitting for us
- 10:04to leave the word of God, to leave preaching and to wait on
- 10:09these tables. So here pick some people to do
- 10:14this task, but we will devote ourselves to the word and into
- 10:17prayer. So I know that I have some
- 10:18responsibilities even as a pastor that mean I shouldn't do
- 10:22all sorts of things so that I can focus my attention on the
- 10:26word in prayer. But I also just want to say,
- 10:30like God, I'm a servant, I'm a minister.
- 10:32If that means I go take someone home from the hospital and I am
- 10:37happy to, if it's hey throw away a trash bag, I want to do that.
- 10:42If it's clean a bathroom, absolutely I'll do it.
- 10:45If it's mow the grass, I might try to take like a Zyrtec or
- 10:49something to deal with some of my allergies, but I'll do it.
- 10:51I'll do whatever is needed because I'm not important.
- 10:56The only person that is important is Christ Jesus.
- 10:58And so I want to draw attention to him.
- 11:00And if I can be a blessing to some other person along the way,
- 11:04I want to do that because that's how Jesus treated me.
- 11:09What a joy verse #7 Instead of being one that demanded
- 11:14adulation and respect, he emptied himself by assuming the
- 11:19form of a servant. We would read in Isaiah 53 He
- 11:22didn't have anything like any great attractiveness that we
- 11:25would go, Oh yeah, like he's awesome.
- 11:27We want him to be our king. He emptied himself.
- 11:34For many of us, we don't want to ever feel empty, unwanted,
- 11:40undesirable, unseen. But that's who Jesus became.
- 11:45You can think of it all. Eternity passed.
- 11:49Jesus had received the love and praise of God the Father, and
- 11:54then once creation started, he had the praise of all of the
- 11:59angels. And yet he spent nine months in
- 12:06the womb of Mary. What humility, what an emptiness
- 12:16in the praise. And you can think, even as his
- 12:20half brothers and the Jewish leaders and even his apostles at
- 12:25times ignored him, argued with him, insulted him, he didn't
- 12:33treat them in the way that they deserved.
- 12:38He extended love and patience and kindness.
- 12:42And the one who deserved everything was getting nothing
- 12:45from these people. Maybe we, you and I, we don't
- 12:50need all of the praise or affirmation from other people
- 12:54that we think we do. Instead, I think like Jesus, if
- 12:58we know that we have the love and the approval of God the
- 13:01Father, maybe that's enough. And we can be misunderstood and
- 13:07unseen and under appreciated within our families and our
- 13:11churches if we know that God is pleased with us and that should
- 13:16be our goal. Jesus, he assumed the form of a
- 13:19servant taking on the likeness of humanity, and when he'd come
- 13:23as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point
- 13:29of death, even to death on a cross.
- 13:32Jesus says I'm a human, humans obey God and I will obey God
- 13:37even to the point of dying for the sins of all.
- 13:42Do you view your role as subordinate creature?
- 13:45That what God says you must do, that whatever God says in his
- 13:49word, we must obey. Or do you say, I'll do whatever
- 13:53I want to do, and when my will matches up with God's, then
- 13:56sure, I'll obey him. May we obey even as Jesus did in
- 14:01the sending section here, for this reason, for the obedience,
- 14:04for the humility that Jesus Christ had.
- 14:08God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every
- 14:12name, so that at the name of Jesus.
- 14:16Here's the promise. This is quoting from actually
- 14:20Isaiah 1 of the later chapters that we'll look at in probably
- 14:24month or two. Every knee will bow in heaven
- 14:29and on earth and under the earth that is in heaven, the angelic
- 14:33beings, the earth, those are, you know, physical creation,
- 14:37mankind and under the earth, if you will.
- 14:41The demons would be one way to think about that or or the
- 14:45departed. Everyone is going to confess
- 14:49that Jesus Christ is Lord, He is Yahweh to the glory of God the
- 14:54Father. So all praise and all worship
- 14:57goes to the Son, and that goes to the praise of the Father.
- 15:02What a joy I want to be about this Business Today.
- 15:07May you and I today with our actions and our words or our
- 15:11posts, may we declare the preeminence and the worthiness
- 15:15of Jesus Christ, for He alone is worthy.
- 15:20Thank you for tuning in. I am going to include in the
- 15:24show notes the description for this one, Brooke Liger Wood.
- 15:28That's LIGERTWOOD. Liger Wood wrote a song very
- 15:36recently that is literally just these verses put to song and it
- 15:43is beautiful and amazing. So I'm going to put that in the
- 15:47show notes so you guys can listen to it and be blessed even
- 15:50as I've been. Thanks for tuning in.
- 15:52See you next episode.
