Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Rate the flick with Bet O'Shea. Well, well, we want
- 0:08Speaker 1: to know about this one. Good morning. Yes, this is
- 0:11Speaker 1: a movie that everybody wants to know about, wants to
- 0:14Speaker 1: talk about. It feels like we've been hearing about it
- 0:17Speaker 1: for months. Yeah. Like in terms of a marketing campaign,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Tom Cruise's new movie, Digger, has had a blanket marketing campaign.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Similar to what we saw with Barbie, with this new
- 0:26Speaker 1: Spider-Man movie, with The Odyssey. Yeah. Tom Cruise was everywhere.
- 0:29Speaker 1: There were premieres all around the world. He was doing
- 0:31Speaker 1: publicity stunts. He even went viral this week. Did you
- 0:34Speaker 1: see when he tried to, he went to console a
- 0:38Speaker 1: young girl at work and she was hunched over, looked
- 0:40Speaker 1: like she was distraught. I saw that, yes. And he's
- 0:42Speaker 1: walked up to do a welfare check. Turns out she
- 0:44Speaker 1: was just doom scrolling on her phone in her five
- 0:48Speaker 1: minute break. And she was like, bugger off, buddy. Anyway,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but just goes to show it. Tom Cruise is everywhere
- 0:53Speaker 1: at the moment. And in this film, if you watch
- 0:55Speaker 1: the trailer, It looks like he's playing this mining magnate
- 0:59Speaker 1: named Digger Rockwell, wearing a ton of prosthetics. He looks
- 1:03Speaker 1: like he's probably 80 years old. Maybe we've seen some
- 1:07Speaker 1: mining magnates similar to that. And because of some action
- 1:11Speaker 1: that he's taken, he's caused this global environmental catastrophe. So
- 1:15Speaker 1: that's what you think the movie is. And I say
- 1:18Speaker 1: that because... This is one of those movies. It's directed
- 1:20Speaker 1: by Alejandro Iñárritu. So he's the guy who gave us Birdman,
- 1:25Speaker 1: which was a trippy movie a few years ago. Not
- 1:27Speaker 1: a bad movie. A great movie with Michael Keaton and
- 1:29Speaker 1: Ed Norton. Shape of Water? Did he do Shape of Water? No, no,
- 1:32Speaker 1: he didn't. That was the other Mexican. That was Guillermo
- 1:36Speaker 1: del Toro. There's three of them. Oh, gosh, yes. There's
- 1:38Speaker 1: Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, who did Gravity, and then Iñárritu.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And so anyway, so most recently he did The Revenant.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He did Babel as well. So he's made a lot
- 1:49Speaker 1: of great movies, right? So you've got to give this
- 1:50Speaker 1: guy the benefit of the doubt. But this is one
- 1:52Speaker 1: of those movies where it makes you think there's a
- 1:56Speaker 1: certain reality a long way into the film. And then
- 2:01Speaker 1: they pull out the rug and you go, hang on
- 2:03Speaker 1: a minute. Everything I've just watched was not actually real.
- 2:06Speaker 1: what I thought it was, my perspective has to completely
- 2:08Speaker 1: shift if I'm going to continue watching this movie and
- 2:11Speaker 1: understand what's going on. So think the Truman Show, right?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Like the start of the Truman Show, it just looks
- 2:15Speaker 1: like Jim Carrey's living this idyllic life in sort of
- 2:19Speaker 1: 50s America. And then you realize, oh, hang on a minute,
- 2:21Speaker 1: he's in a reality TV show. So it's that sort
- 2:23Speaker 1: of a twist. And how much you enjoy this movie
- 2:27Speaker 1: will depend on how willing you are to go along
- 2:30Speaker 1: with that twist. And some people, and I can tell you,
- 2:33Speaker 1: this will be one of, if not the most polarizing
- 2:36Speaker 1: movie that I have ever seen. 50% of people who
- 2:40Speaker 1: watch it will absolutely hate it. 50% will think it's
- 2:44Speaker 1: the best thing they've ever seen. Interesting. Yeah. What did
- 2:47Speaker 1: you think? I really liked it. You liked it? Yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So I took my 14 year old daughter, who's an
- 2:52Speaker 1: incredibly tough critic because it's hard to pull her away
- 2:55Speaker 1: from her phone screen most of the time. She thought
- 2:58Speaker 1: the film was amazing. If you think of it as,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I guess, I don't want to give anything away because
- 3:05Speaker 1: the real power of this film is to go in
- 3:08Speaker 1: as a blank slate and then you kind of just
- 3:09Speaker 1: let it wash over you. But all I will say
- 3:12Speaker 1: is there's two stories happening at once. There's the story
- 3:16Speaker 1: of Tom Cruise as this mining guy, Digger Rockwell, and
- 3:20Speaker 1: then there's this parallel story that is is a different reality.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And it's how those two intersect, which is where the
- 3:28Speaker 1: message of the movie is. And it's a message about environmentalism.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It's a message about how humanity has stuffed up the world.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But it's not the message that you think it is.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And do they intersect via John Goodman? Because I love
- 3:40Speaker 1: John Goodman. All the supporting cast is so good. John
- 3:42Speaker 1: Goodman plays the President of the United States, who is
- 3:46Speaker 1: dealing with sort of a very serious case of colon cancer.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So he's always talking about His butt In a way
- 3:54Speaker 1: Mr President I think of this film Like sort of
- 3:57Speaker 1: At the intersection Between Wes Anderson movies Okay And Kubrick's
- 4:01Speaker 1: Doctor Strangelove Oh alright If you smooshed Those movies together
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah With a dash of Birdman That's what you got
- 4:08Speaker 1: You know one of the Most disturbing parts Of that
- 4:10Speaker 1: movie In the trailer Is that cat Oh, the cat. Oh,
- 4:13Speaker 1: I know. Well, that's a very Wes Anderson twist. When
- 4:15Speaker 1: you see that cat in real life, it's a fake cat. Oh,
- 4:18Speaker 1: it is fake. It's fake cat. It's a very unworldly cat.
- 4:21Speaker 1: It's so obviously fake. You watch it and you go,
- 4:23Speaker 1: what the hell? What the hell is this movie? Like,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it is a puppet. How many, her name's Suri, Tom.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You should look her up. So you're giving it. Sorry,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I can't help it. I know, I know, I know.
- 4:37Speaker 1: At least he's unrecognisable in this. So four. I'm giving
- 4:39Speaker 1: it a four. Four? Yep, flirted with a four and
- 4:41Speaker 1: a half. I don't know how I'm going to deal
- 4:43Speaker 1: with it because, as you know, I'm not a Tom
- 4:45Speaker 1: Cruise fan, but I really like the look of this movie.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And it's not that he's so amazing in this. I
- 4:49Speaker 1: think John Goodman's amazing. Riz Ahmed is amazing. Lots of
- 4:51Speaker 1: the other characters are amazing. She's incredible. It's just Tom
- 4:54Speaker 1: is good. Tom is good. Maybe not great, but it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: very different. They don't make him like this. All right. Okay.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I think I'm going to go and see it. Go
- 5:01Speaker 1: see it. All right.
