- 2:23a significant piece of Sacramento history is
- 2:26receiving national recognition. The site of the
- 2:30Hackett House in downtown Sacramento has officially
- 2:33been added to the National Park Service's Underground
- 2:37Railroad Network to Freedom. The black -owned
- 2:40hotel became nationally significant in 1858.
- 2:45when Archie Lee, an 18 -year -old enslaved man
- 2:48who escaped from Mississippi, found refuge there
- 2:51after fleeing slavery. With support from Sacramento's
- 2:54free black community and legal advocates, Lee
- 2:58fought for his freedom in a landmark court case
- 3:01that ultimately declared him a free man. Although
- 3:04the original Hackett House was demolished in
- 3:07the 1960s during the construction of I -5, the
- 3:10site now joins a national network preserving
- 3:14the stories of those who sought freedom and those
