- 0:00Speaker 1: Toby and Chili mornings on demand on 97.1 Mosh FM.
- 0:04Speaker 2: A special good morning to the city of Arlington and
- 0:07Speaker 2: kids who are going back to school for the first
- 0:09Speaker 2: day today. Proud of you. You got an extra week
- 0:13Speaker 2: on the rest of the DMV, but now summer is
- 0:15Speaker 2: officially deleted. It's 97.1 Wash FM, but that's good news
- 0:20Speaker 2: because there's always another summer ahead to look forward to
- 0:23Speaker 2: and a holiday weekend to look forward to as well.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We're Toby and Chili in the morning, 866-927-4361. On this Monday,
- 0:27Speaker 2: why are you feeling good.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Today, Chili? Well, I realized shortly after I got to
- 0:36Speaker 3: work that I forgot to put on deodorant. And I'm thinking,
- 0:38Speaker 3: I did not want to start a work week like this. However,
- 0:41Speaker 3: you know, the lockers that we have here to store things.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Many years ago, I'm talking, yes, years ago.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Oh, Lord.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I brought in a deodorant stick for emergencies.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Sure.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Lo and behold, I took advantage and I'm thanking my
- 0:57Speaker 3: past self. Chili, you were so smart to do that
- 1:01Speaker 3: because I am not stinking up this joint.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Question. Does deodorant ever expire?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Not really.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I know it gets old.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I promise you it's working fine right now.
- 1:12Speaker 2: For guys, if you're using the stick, it dries out sometimes.
- 1:15Speaker 1: If you don't use it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. It's still good.
- 1:16Speaker 3: It's still good. But yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 2: That's it. For me, if the stick gets dry because
- 1:20Speaker 2: I haven't used it, like that normally happens if I'd
- 1:22Speaker 2: been like, oh, let me use this spray deodorant. I
- 1:25Speaker 2: like to spray deodorant. Then you run out of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: spray deodorant and you go back to the other one
- 1:28Speaker 2: and it's like, okay, I'm a little off. but okay.
- 1:33Speaker 2: At least I'm not funky. You know what I mean?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm feeling great today because it was a weekend of productivity.
- 1:39Speaker 2: My significant other comes back from her week away down
- 1:43Speaker 2: in Norfolk. And I look forward to seeing her at
- 1:47Speaker 2: some point in time this week, but nonetheless, in order
- 1:50Speaker 2: to prepare for that, I took care of life, things
- 1:53Speaker 2: cleaned up, uh, mopped, you know, domestic Toby. I wish I,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I wish it was sexier, but you know, Hey, That
- 2:01Speaker 2: was my 20s and 30s. Anyway, good morning. How are
- 2:05Speaker 2: you today? You feeling good? Tell us why you've got

- 4:27Speaker 2: as you look for the shoes, you get the lunch packed,
- 4:29Speaker 2: and more, you might be feeling a bit of stress.
- 4:31Speaker 2: You might be going, God, I wish it was like
- 4:33Speaker 2: three weeks ago. We were still in summer. Maybe you
- 4:35Speaker 2: were on vacation. I know. Let that go for a minute.

- 4:40Speaker 2: might be able to help. Stay there and we'll be
- 4:44Speaker 2: inspired together. Playing Washington's Variety from the 80s, 90s and

- 4:55Speaker 2: and Chilling in the Morning. And it's time for us
- 4:57Speaker 2: to talk about you and how you're doing with your
- 5:00Speaker 2: morning mindset today.
- 5:01Speaker 3: We know that Mondays can be tough, so we try
- 5:03Speaker 3: to find a quote and share it with you to
- 5:04Speaker 3: maybe motivate you as you get through the rest of
- 5:07Speaker 3: the day.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Emily Dickinson says this morning, forever is composed of nows.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Emily Dickinson, forever is composed of nows. See, this is
- 5:17Speaker 2: important because we spend so much time in life waiting
- 5:21Speaker 2: for a better time to do something. Oh, it'll be
- 5:24Speaker 2: better after the deadline. Once the kids are off to school,
- 5:26Speaker 2: everything will calm down. I'll lose the weight and then
- 5:29Speaker 2: I'll deal with it. And then things calm down, maybe.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I think Emily Dickinson's point is that right now, this
- 5:38Speaker 2: is the time. Life's not waiting somewhere in the future.
- 5:41Speaker 2: It's happening every day, every moment, including on this ordinary
- 5:46Speaker 2: Monday you're living through right now. So keep that in mind.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Forever is composed of nows. Got it?
- 5:54Speaker 4: Good.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Let that sink in. Marinate a bit. It's 97.1. Watch FM.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That's your morning mindset. Find it again on Insta, Facebook,
- 6:03Speaker 2: all the fabulous places that you socially interact with people.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And you can share it with somebody who might need it.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Or you can send us one of your own if
- 6:11Speaker 2: you want. I can't speak on this Monday because it's Monday.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Toby and Chili page, watchfm.com. Now, in a few minutes.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I had a little nostalgic experience over the weekend. Remember
- 6:20Speaker 3: when you would have cereal and the leftover milk tasted
- 6:23Speaker 3: so good?
- 6:24Speaker 5: Yes.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Let's talk about the best leftover cereal milk. What would
- 6:28Speaker 3: that be for you? 866-927-4361. We can't wait to hear.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And if you excuse me, I'm going to go and
- 6:35Speaker 2: slurp down some milk with this cereal now. Do you
- 6:38Speaker 2: have breakfast yet? Well, if you haven't, maybe this will
- 6:43Speaker 2: apply to you when you get to work and you
- 6:45Speaker 2: pour yourself some cereal and you grab the milk and
- 6:48Speaker 2: you finish it off. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Have you
- 6:50Speaker 2: ever heard of cereal milk?
- 6:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 3: So my son, who's 12, was having his Honey Nut
- 6:55Speaker 3: Cheerios over the weekend, Toby. And I used to love
- 6:57Speaker 3: slurping that leftover milk because it had the flavor of
- 7:01Speaker 3: the cereal.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Donato does not like it.
- 7:03Speaker 3: So I ended up drinking his cereal milk and I'm thinking,
- 7:06Speaker 3: this takes me back.
- 7:09Speaker 2: What's wrong with your son?
- 7:11Speaker 1: I know, right?
- 7:12Speaker 2: He's missing out. That is the best thing. That's why
- 7:14Speaker 2: if you look in that drawer over there, you see
- 7:16Speaker 2: the cereal I have over there and I'm out of milk.
- 7:19Speaker 2: One of the great joys of life is slurping the
- 7:23Speaker 2: cereal milk. Once you've finished all the big parts of
- 7:25Speaker 2: the cereal and you drink it down, it tastes flavorful.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Which one? Which one do you bring?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Fruit Loops.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. And it even changes the color of the cereal.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I don't know if that's okay or not.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Well, I know. It's not so great, but yeah. I
- 7:37Speaker 3: always loved the Captain Crunch Berry. Oh, yeah. Leftover.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Or Golden Graham.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Oh, Lord.
- 7:45Speaker 2: What about Cocoa Krispies?
- 7:47Speaker 3: Well, the Cocoa Puffs.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Those two.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Because that turns the chocolate into chocolate, though.
- 7:52Speaker 2: That's right. Ha ha. 866-927-4361. So cereal milk. Jeremy, have
- 7:58Speaker 2: you enjoyed some? What cereal makes the best in your opinion?
- 8:02Speaker 2: The honey bunches of oats with strawberries.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Almost sounds too healthy, but OK.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't know if the strawberry does what the chocolate does.
- 8:12Speaker 2: That could be a good move to get some strawberry milk.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Thank you this morning, Jeremy. Have a great day in Vienna.
- 8:17Speaker 2: In Bethesda, Erica, cereal milk. the cereal that you think
- 8:22Speaker 2: makes the best.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I eat boring cereal.
- 8:25Speaker 4: I don't like sweet cereal anymore.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Give me the bran flakes and give me the Cheerios.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I know I've hit adulthood when I want the boring cereal.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Well, I'm not going to knock what you like there, Erica, but.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Yeah, boring cereal equals boring tasting milk. Right.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Maybe you've got a fave. What is it? Talkback's wide
- 8:44Speaker 2: open for you. If you're listening on your iHeart app
- 8:46Speaker 2: right now, tap speak, send, and tell us because we
- 8:49Speaker 2: love to hear from you. It is 97.1 Wash FM
- 8:52Speaker 2: Hangout because right around 610, you'll get the news, top
- 8:56Speaker 2: stories at the top of the hour. Chili, what's going on?
- 8:59Speaker 3: AAA says Labor Day travelers should brace themselves for higher costs.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I've got more on that in just a few.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Joe, Nick, and Kevin are coming to town. That's right,
- 9:09Speaker 2: the Jonas Brothers, you heard, right? Oh, you didn't? Well,
- 9:12Speaker 2: now you know. And we can get you into the

- 9:42Speaker 3: military struck Iranian rocket launchers. We've got the latest on
- 9:46Speaker 3: that story and others on the way with Toby and
- 9:49Speaker 3: Chili in the morning on 97.1 Wash FM.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Top Stories, top of the hour.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Iran has struck back at US forces in the Middle
- 10:00Speaker 3: East firing missiles into Jordan that were intercepted with no
- 10:04Speaker 3: reported damage. It was retaliation after American forces hit Iran's
- 10:08Speaker 3: Larak Island, where CENTCOM says Iranian units were getting ready
- 10:12Speaker 3: to mine and rocket the Strait of Hormuz. Two people
- 10:16Speaker 3: are dead after a wrong-way crash on 270 South near
- 10:19Speaker 3: Democracy Boulevard Saturday night when a Ford Mustang slammed head-on
- 10:24Speaker 3: into a Toyota Camry. The driver, 32-year-old Jose Nolasco, faces
- 10:29Speaker 3: manslaughter and DUI homicide charges. Prince George's County Public Schools
- 10:34Speaker 3: is shaking up its transportation department after a rough start
- 10:37Speaker 3: to the school year left thousands of students without bus assignments.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Director Kiba Baldwin is stepping down, and Mark Fawcett's going
- 10:45Speaker 3: to be taking over as acting director to lead the transition.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Maryland regulators approved a nearly $ 51 million Pepco rate hike.
- 10:55Speaker 3: That is less than half of what the utility wanted,
- 10:58Speaker 3: raising the average residential bill by $ 3.
- 11:00Speaker 2: 94 a month.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Instead of the $ 10. 24 that Pepco wanted. Montgomery County police
- 11:08Speaker 3: are dissolving their alcohol initiatives unit because of staffing shortages,
- 11:12Speaker 3: reassigning officers to traffic, crisis response, and school resource roles.
- 11:17Speaker 3: DUI enforcement will continue through task forces instead. And Labor
- 11:23Speaker 3: Day travelers should be bracing for higher costs. AAA says
- 11:25Speaker 3: that round-trip airfare is averaging about $ 750 with hotel prices increasing.
- 11:31Speaker 3: up 9% domestically and 12% abroad. Now, if you're hitting
- 11:35Speaker 3: the road, AAA says that Thursday morning is your best
- 11:38Speaker 3: bet to beat the traffic. Forecast today, partly sunny skies
- 11:42Speaker 3: with highs in the 90s, heat index close to 100.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Right now, 73 in Oakton.
- 11:48Speaker 2: That's the news. Remember, you get top stories at the
- 11:50Speaker 2: top of the hour with Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It is 97.1 Wash FM. How would you feel if
- 11:56Speaker 2: you went and you parked in a really prime spot
- 11:58Speaker 2: at the mall and some guy walked up and knocked
- 12:00Speaker 2: on your window and said, yeah, $ 10, please? Well, maybe
- 12:03Speaker 2: it's not $ 10, but there are some places where you
- 12:06Speaker 2: shop that are charging now for premium parking.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Thoughts?
- 12:10Speaker 2: We're talking about it. Hang out. People who do retail
- 12:15Speaker 2: therapy on the regular, you might have noticed a trend
- 12:18Speaker 2: emerging at some of the places you like to go
- 12:20Speaker 2: and get said retail therapy, otherwise known as shopping. 97.1
- 12:24Speaker 2: Wash FM. We're totally chilling in the morning. There's been
- 12:27Speaker 2: a movement to charge people for prime parking spots. I mean, hey,
- 12:32Speaker 2: malls have to do what malls have to do to
- 12:34Speaker 2: make money and money's tight everywhere. But some people, when
- 12:38Speaker 2: they brought this idea a little bit closer to home
- 12:41Speaker 2: here in the DMV, weren't so thrilled about it.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Well, the mall in Columbia did put up what's called
- 12:46Speaker 3: preferred parking at 120 spots on August 3rd. This was
- 12:50Speaker 3: near main event and seasons 52. Wow. It was $ 2. 45
- 12:53Speaker 3: for the first hour and then up to $ 10. 45 for
- 12:57Speaker 3: the day. Here's what happened. Shoppers mostly ignored it and
- 12:59Speaker 3: just kept parking elsewhere. This past Friday, OK, all the
- 13:03Speaker 3: signs had come down and the once empty premium spots
- 13:07Speaker 3: were packed again. And the mall spokesperson says this is
- 13:11Speaker 3: just temporarily on pause while they find a better location
- 13:15Speaker 3: for it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I'll tell you when they're going to bring it back.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Christmas time. Specifically closer to Black Friday. That would make sense.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And they'll probably put it near an anchor store rather than, say,
- 13:25Speaker 2: like a food court where a lot of people drop
- 13:28Speaker 2: their kids off at food courts. A lot of people
- 13:31Speaker 2: enter a mall through a food court. I think if
- 13:33Speaker 2: you put this by, I don't know, whatever anchor store
- 13:36Speaker 2: is up there. I forget what it is. I think
- 13:37Speaker 2: it might be even a Bloomingdale's. Put it near that,
- 13:40Speaker 2: you know, and then call it a day. If you
- 13:43Speaker 2: want the close up close parking, you'll pay for it.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Somebody who would pay for that unless it was the holidays.
- 13:48Speaker 3: But you, on the other hand, I feel like you've
- 13:50Speaker 3: been a bit spoiled.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I do at Tyson's.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 2: But even before my injury with the knee that gave
- 13:56Speaker 2: me a handicap parking pass on a temporary basis, I
- 14:00Speaker 2: will tell you that. Yeah, I mean, I like being close. Sure,
- 14:03Speaker 2: when that pass goes away, it's going to be a thing,
- 14:06Speaker 2: but I'll go back to what I used to do
- 14:07Speaker 2: at Tyson's, which was pay to park up close because
- 14:10Speaker 2: I didn't really want to be in the mall that long.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Guess we'll have to see how this all works out
- 14:14Speaker 2: in the future. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Read more. Toby
- 14:18Speaker 2: and Chili Page, WashFM.com, and hang out for just a
- 14:21Speaker 2: few because next we're going to talk about vacations and surprises.
- 14:25Speaker 2: As we wrap up the summer, what was it about
- 14:28Speaker 2: a vacation that pleasantly surprised you? Tell us all about
- 14:31Speaker 2: it at 866-927-4361. You're on M Street right now, maybe Wisconsin.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Proud of you for getting that workout in early this
- 14:39Speaker 2: morning in Georgetown. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Now you're ready
- 14:43Speaker 2: to go for the day. We're talking this morning, Chili
- 14:45Speaker 2: and I, about a place that you went on vacation
- 14:48Speaker 2: to that you kind of weren't looking forward to, but
- 14:51Speaker 2: maybe it surprised you. I think everybody has one of
- 14:55Speaker 2: these places, and if you want to tell us about
- 14:57Speaker 2: one in your world, tap that TalkBack microphone if you're
- 14:59Speaker 2: signed into your iHeart app and tell us everything about
- 15:02Speaker 2: your adventure. Chili, have you ever had a place like this?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Last summer. Remember when I went to North Beach in Maryland? Now,
- 15:08Speaker 3: a lot of our listeners live there year round and
- 15:10Speaker 3: they commute into town. That's why I was in my
- 15:13Speaker 3: mind going, it's not going to really feel like a vacation, whatever. Oh,
- 15:17Speaker 3: was I wrong? So quaint right there on the Chesapeake.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Cute little mom and pop places, even a little casino.
- 15:24Speaker 3: That is why I was pleasantly surprised.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I was pleasantly surprised by Smith Island.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 15:30Speaker 2: First of all, if you don't know about Smith Island,
- 15:33Speaker 2: Google it. All I'll say is this. There's only one
- 15:36Speaker 2: way to get there, and it's in the middle of
- 15:38Speaker 2: the Chesapeake. And the people who live there, there's not
- 15:41Speaker 2: many of them, but oh, they are great. I mowed
- 15:45Speaker 2: some neighbor's lawn of the woman whose house we Airbnb'd.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And if you get a chance to go, you should
- 15:51Speaker 2: Smith Island, home of the cake. Ellen Germantown, you say
- 15:54Speaker 2: you had one of these experiences in Montana. What made
- 15:58Speaker 2: it great for you?
- 15:59Speaker 1: The people, I didn't expect the locals to be so friendly.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Yeah, tell us about your experience. We ended up getting
- 16:06Speaker 3: invited to a little family-owned restaurant and had one of
- 16:09Speaker 3: the best meals of the whole trip.
- 16:11Speaker 2: That goes to your point earlier, Chili, about family-owned businesses
- 16:16Speaker 2: and small things that you can only find in certain
- 16:19Speaker 2: places and no place else. Thank you, Al. Stu and Warrington,
- 16:24Speaker 2: what vacation destination surprised you?
- 16:27Speaker 5: I wasn't very excited about visiting New Orleans, but I
- 16:30Speaker 5: was surprised by how much I loved the city's energy
- 16:33Speaker 5: and charm.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Tell us about it.

- 19:17Speaker 3: for what folks are eating, burgers, hot dogs, chips, dips,
- 19:21Speaker 3: pulled pork, barbecue, and pizza top the list. Forecast for today,
- 19:26Speaker 3: we'll have partly sunny skies, the start of a heat wave,
- 19:28Speaker 3: highs in the 90s with a heat index close to 100.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Right now, though, it's 74 and only.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Toby and Chili's Nearly Impossible Question.
- 19:37Speaker 2: What's that question?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Retailers are already selling Halloween decor. Now Reese's is the
- 19:43Speaker 3: top Halloween candy. What's the second most favorite?

- 19:59Speaker 2: Call now, get it right, and you could win. Oh,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you missed it. Here's the question again.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Reese's is the top Halloween candy. What is the second
- 20:09Speaker 3: most favorite?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Call now. Get it right. Ed Sheeran, Philadelphia. Tickets could be.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yours.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Toby and Chili's Nearly Impossible Question.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And what is the question today? Because some people might
- 20:20Speaker 2: have missed it. It's a Monday thing.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Summerween continues as retailers getting ready to sell Halloween decor. Now,
- 20:27Speaker 3: Reese's is the top Halloween candy, but we want to
- 20:30Speaker 3: know what's the second most favorite.
- 20:33Speaker 2: 866-927-4361 is the number. If you know the answer, you're
- 20:38Speaker 2: going to go see Ed Sheeran at the link in Philadelphia,
- 20:41Speaker 2: thanks to AEG. Good morning. What's your name and where
- 20:44Speaker 2: are you from?
- 20:45Speaker 3: Lauren from Germantown.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Welcome, Lauren from Germantown. You heard the question from Chili Amar.
- 20:50Speaker 2: What is your guess?
- 20:52Speaker 3: Okay, my guess is Snickers.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Snickers.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Excellent guess. It is a favorite, but unfortunately not number two.
- 21:01Speaker 2: However, it really satisfies.
- 21:02Speaker 3: That's true.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Well, thanks for playing. Try again tomorrow, okay?
- 21:07Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And who is this? Where are you from? Hey, what's
- 21:10Speaker 2: going on? It's Chris calling from Manassas Park. Chris, good morning.
- 21:14Speaker 2: You've got the question from Chili Amar. What's your guest today?
- 21:18Speaker 2: I am going to go with a classic, M & M' s.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Because they melt in your mouth, not in your hands.
- 21:27Speaker 4: That's right.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Chris, I wish I could tell you that was the
- 21:29Speaker 3: right answer, but alas, it is not.
- 21:31Speaker 4: It is not.
- 21:32Speaker 2: No, no.
- 21:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Try again tomorrow so you can win these tickets, all right?
- 21:36Speaker 4: All right, will do.
- 21:37Speaker 2: And what is your name?
- 21:38Speaker 4: Hi, I'm Lindsay, and I'm from Percival.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Hello in Percival, Lindsay. You've got the question. What's your guess?
- 21:45Speaker 4: My guess is Kit Kat.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Do you love them?
- 21:47Speaker 4: I like Kit Kats, but my favorite is Reese's.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so Reese's, again, is number one. And according to
- 21:54Speaker 3: this survey.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Kit Kat is the second most favorite.
- 21:57Speaker 3: That means you win, Lindsay.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Yay, thank you.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Going to see Ed Sheeran.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Philadelphia, thanks to AEG, a little road trip in your future.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So plan accordingly. Stock up on lots of your favorite candies.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Give me a break. Give me a break. You knew
- 22:14Speaker 2: today's answer was the Kit Kat bar. So enjoy the show.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I really appreciate it.
- 22:19Speaker 2: We appreciate you more than you know. Thanks for listening
- 22:22Speaker 2: to us. Hang on so we can get some info
- 22:24Speaker 2: from you. More tickets. Ed Sheeran, Philadelphia tomorrow. Be here
- 22:28Speaker 2: around 7, 10-ish to play and win with your nearly
- 22:31Speaker 2: impossible question. And hang right there.
- 22:33Speaker 3: It's Monday, so we've got a story we think will
- 22:36Speaker 3: make your Monday. A former Fairfax County substitute teacher started
- 22:39Speaker 3: a nonprofit that's quietly helping thousands of students in need.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Our things on 355 as you make your way over
- 22:47Speaker 2: to NIH to get your work on as we get
- 22:50Speaker 2: into this Monday. Good? I hope so. It's 97.1 Wash FM.
- 22:54Speaker 2: We're Toby and Chili in the morning, and this might
- 22:55Speaker 2: make it better. It's a story that we think might
- 22:58Speaker 2: just make your Monday. Years ago, Ron Fitzsimmons was a
- 23:02Speaker 2: substitute teacher teaching about Vernon High, and he spotted this
- 23:06Speaker 2: girl crying alone in the hallway. She couldn't afford a
- 23:09Speaker 2: ticket to prom, and so... he bought her one. Then
- 23:12Speaker 2: he started asking other colleagues and teachers, have you ever
- 23:14Speaker 2: done the same thing? And it turns out that quietly,
- 23:17Speaker 2: a lot of them have.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Well, and it was that moment that led Ron and
- 23:20Speaker 3: his sister, Laura, to start a nonprofit called Alice's Kids
- 23:24Speaker 3: back in 2011. The two of them grew up poor
- 23:27Speaker 3: on Long Island, and they remembered what it felt like
- 23:29Speaker 3: to miss out on things like Cub Scouts, field trips,
- 23:32Speaker 3: or any of those other big things that other kids
- 23:34Speaker 3: get to do just because they didn't have the money
- 23:35Speaker 3: for it.
- 23:36Speaker 2: And that's why today, Alice's Kids were Submit requests when
- 23:43Speaker 2: there's a student that needs something like an instrument or
- 23:45Speaker 2: maybe a yearbook or new sneakers. And within a day
- 23:49Speaker 2: or two, the family gets a gift card. And the
- 23:52Speaker 2: kid never even knows that it came from charity.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Last year, the nonprofit helped about 14,000 children. And this year,
- 24:00Speaker 3: they expect to hit 20,000. And that is why we
- 24:03Speaker 3: chose what Ron, his sister Laura, and Alice's Kids is
- 24:06Speaker 3: doing as a story that really makes our Monday.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Because it preserves dignity. It helps kids to... live their
- 24:12Speaker 2: lives without worrying about some of these things which are expensive.
- 24:16Speaker 2: And it helps families too, because in a moment's notice,
- 24:19Speaker 2: what you think you have in the bank account may
- 24:21Speaker 2: not be what you think you have in the bank account.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Good stuff. It's a great story. Thank you. And by
- 24:26Speaker 2: the way, if you want to read more about this organization,
- 24:29Speaker 2: even support them, tell me in ChiliPage, washfm.com. It's 97.1
- 24:33Speaker 2: Wash FM Hangout for just a bit, because right around 8, 10,
- 24:38Speaker 2: We'll get you up to speed with the news. Top
- 24:40Speaker 2: stories at the top of the hour. What is going
- 24:42Speaker 2: on this morning, Chili?
- 24:43Speaker 3: A new survey finds that one in four U.S. adults
- 24:46Speaker 3: are now part of what's called the sandwich generation. No,
- 24:50Speaker 3: it has nothing to do with food, but I will
- 24:52Speaker 3: explain in just a few.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Oh, this is going to be an experience you don't
- 24:58Speaker 2: want to miss. Toby and Chili in the morning. It's
- 25:01Speaker 2: 97.1 Wash FM. We're headed to Nats Park and we
- 25:03Speaker 2: would love for you to come with us.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Toby and Chili's VIP Nats Park experience. We're going to
- 25:09Speaker 3: be sitting behind home plate Saturday, September 12th, four o'clock
- 25:14Speaker 3: against the Angels.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And you know, these are Terra Club seats. So you
- 25:17Speaker 2: know what that means? Free food, free drinks, free everything.
- 25:21Speaker 2: And you can have free tickets.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Just all you have to do is listen to Wash
- 25:26Speaker 3: FM on that free iHeartRadio app. And right now, tap
- 25:29Speaker 3: that talkback microphone and leave the word Nats so you
- 25:32Speaker 3: can join us.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So to recap, tap, speak and send your talkback microphone
- 25:37Speaker 2: saying Nats, Nats, I'm in. And we could be at
- 25:40Speaker 2: the ballgame together.
- 25:41Speaker 1: 97.1 WASH-FM, Washington. An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories,
- 25:48Speaker 1: top of the hour.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Iran has struck back at U.S. forces in the Middle East.
- 25:54Speaker 3: We've got the latest on that story and others on
- 25:57Speaker 3: the way. With Toby and Chili in the morning on
- 25:59Speaker 3: 97.1 WASH-FM.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Top stories, top of the hour.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Iran has struck back at U.S. forces in the Middle East,
- 26:10Speaker 3: firing missiles into Jordan that were intercepted with no reported damage.
- 26:14Speaker 3: It was retaliation after American forces hit Iran's Laraq Island,
- 26:18Speaker 3: where they say Iranian units were preparing to mine and
- 26:21Speaker 3: rocket the Strait of Hormuz. A deadly flash flooding has
- 26:24Speaker 3: struck the Grand Canyon, leaving one person dead and as
- 26:27Speaker 3: many as 15 others missing. Floodwaters destroyed footbridges and forced
- 26:32Speaker 3: hikers and campers to evacuate. Two people have died after
- 26:35Speaker 3: a wrong-way crash on 270 South near Demacos Street Boulevard
- 26:39Speaker 3: on Saturday night when a Ford Mustang slammed head-on into
- 26:43Speaker 3: a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Mustang, 32-year-old Jose Nolasco,
- 26:48Speaker 3: faces manslaughter and DUI homicide charges. A Fairfax County daycare
- 26:53Speaker 3: worker facing charges after allegedly assaulting two young children. Police
- 26:57Speaker 3: say 61-year-old Wafa Abdallah pushed down a two-year-old boy and
- 27:01Speaker 3: struck another boy in the head at the Foss Creative
- 27:04Speaker 3: Education Learning Center in McLean Thursday. Prince George's County Public
- 27:09Speaker 3: Schools is shaking up its transportation department after a really
- 27:12Speaker 3: rough start to the school year left thousands of students
- 27:14Speaker 3: without bus assignments. Director Kiba Baldwin is stepping down and
- 27:18Speaker 3: Mark Fawcett is going to be taking over as acting
- 27:20Speaker 3: director to lead the transition. And according to a recent survey,
- 27:24Speaker 3: one in four U.S. adults are now part of the
- 27:27Speaker 3: sandwich generation. That's caring for an aging parent while also
- 27:31Speaker 3: raising kids. With Americans in their 40s hit the hardest. Now,
- 27:34Speaker 3: despite the added strain, those sandwiched adults actually report slightly
- 27:38Speaker 3: higher family satisfaction than everyone else. Forecast today, partly sunny skies,
- 27:44Speaker 3: highs in the 90s with the heat index close to 100.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Right now, 74 in Thurmont.
- 27:49Speaker 2: That's the news with Toby and Tilly in the morning.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Top stories at the top of the hour for you
- 27:54Speaker 2: in Oakton. As you sit on 66 and maybe 123,
- 28:00Speaker 2: making your way into work thinking, why is the car
- 28:02Speaker 2: another member of my family? Well, you know, Tilly and
- 28:05Speaker 2: I feel like sometimes you are a member of our family.
- 28:08Speaker 2: And as such, if one of us were to pass
- 28:10Speaker 2: on If we were to tell you we wanted to
- 28:12Speaker 2: be buried with certain things, would you honor our request?
- 28:16Speaker 2: Dolly Parton had a request. We'll tell you what that
- 28:19Speaker 2: request was. And of course, we're going to talk about it.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So join us at 866-927-4361. I don't know if the
- 28:28Speaker 2: world is over the loss of Dolly Parton yet. 97.1
- 28:31Speaker 2: Wash FM. Toby and Chili in the morning. But it
- 28:34Speaker 2: was very, very sad last week when she was called
- 28:38Speaker 2: home to join Heaven's Choir. And now that new voice
- 28:42Speaker 2: is angelic. just like she was when she was alive
- 28:45Speaker 2: and you know we know now what she wants to
- 28:48Speaker 2: be buried with and in and on.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Before she passed away she apparently told her family members
- 28:54Speaker 3: she wanted to be buried in her high heels and
- 28:58Speaker 3: laid to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton.
- 29:02Speaker 2: How do you think her husband laying next to her
- 29:04Speaker 2: where she's being laid to rest feels about that plush cotton?
- 29:07Speaker 3: Oh, I think he's going to be happy that she's
- 29:09Speaker 3: with him. I don't think he's going to care. But
- 29:11Speaker 3: I love how she told people exactly what she wanted
- 29:15Speaker 3: because she loved them high heels.
- 29:17Speaker 2: And what mama wants, mama's going to get.
- 29:19Speaker 3: And if I were to make plans ahead like that,
- 29:22Speaker 3: I guess the only thing I'd want to be buried
- 29:24Speaker 3: with are the ashes of my dog. If my poor
- 29:28Speaker 3: Bella went before me. in her little urn.
- 29:31Speaker 1: That way we can go together.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Oh, you'd be clutching it right there in the center.
- 29:34Speaker 3: That's right. They could just place it right there.
- 29:36Speaker 1: What about you?
- 29:37Speaker 2: Well, chile i've given this a lot of thought oh
- 29:39Speaker 2: really when god calls me home i want to be
- 29:42Speaker 2: laid to rest wearing a darth vader mask with a
- 29:45Speaker 2: captain america shield and maybe even a thanos gauntlet just
- 29:50Speaker 2: for good measure come on Yes. And you know what?
- 29:53Speaker 2: At the funeral, it's going to be open casket because
- 29:54Speaker 2: I want all of you to see me one last time.
- 29:58Speaker 3: We're not really going to be seeing you much. We're
- 29:59Speaker 3: just going to be seeing your costume.
- 30:01Speaker 2: That's the point. You will gaze upon me in my
- 30:04Speaker 2: Darth Vader mask and you'll remember. Hey, Leslie, how are
- 30:08Speaker 2: things in Warrington this morning? Tell us, have you ever
- 30:12Speaker 2: seen or experienced somebody being laid to rest with something very,
- 30:16Speaker 2: very uncanny?
- 30:17Speaker 4: A friend of ours had a family member that was
- 30:19Speaker 4: a huge Cubs fan. Of course, they were buried with
- 30:22Speaker 4: their various Cubs mementos.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Like what?
- 30:25Speaker 4: There was a baseball hat, a cap course, a jersey.
- 30:28Speaker 4: I think they were probably wearing the jersey.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. How did your family feel about that?
- 30:33Speaker 4: They were fine with it. Holy cow!
- 30:37Speaker 2: Now our lives are complete.
- 30:38Speaker 4: The Cubs are number one.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Oh, this is great news if you're on your way
- 30:43Speaker 2: to work in Bethesda right now and there's somebody in
- 30:46Speaker 2: your life who cannot wait for the new Grand Theft
- 30:48Speaker 2: Auto game to come out. It's 97.1 Wash FM.

- 32:03Speaker 2: Comes from Emily Dickinson this morning. Forever is composed of nows.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Forever is composed of nows. We spend too much time
- 32:12Speaker 2: in life waiting for a better time to do something.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Why?
