Speaker 6: Dave Allen Show. You're on biy BADYWHS. I'm Amanda Baron
• 1:06
Speaker 6: from WOWK thirteen News. Glad to be with you this morning.
• 1:10
Speaker 6: Dave is off and not a bad morning to be off.
• 1:13
Speaker 6: Dale Cooper is with me. Your babysitting this morning, and
• 1:16
Speaker 6: I certainly appreciate it.
• 1:17
Speaker 7: I'm just pushing buttons from the captain's chair, but you
• 1:20
Speaker 7: have control of the shows well, lots.
• 1:21
  Speaker 4: Of fun time.
• 1:22
Speaker 6: I'm very honored. It's nice to be alongside you. Of course,
• 1:24
Speaker 6: it's a tough morning for so many people. A couple
• 1:27
Speaker 6: of benches of snow in the Canaw Valley this morning.
• 1:29
Speaker 6: It's very pretty, but if you're the person that has
• 1:32
Speaker 6: to scrape the driveway or scrape the cars off, not
• 1:34
Speaker 6: so pretty. Lots of kids home today, lots of parent's
• 1:37
Speaker 6: probably scrambling trying to figure out what to do. We
• 1:39
Speaker 6: hope you're warm and safe wherever you may be. It's
• 1:42
Speaker 6: been a tough week weatherwise for so many folks, and
• 1:46
Speaker 6: all of this snow is just compounding the issue of
• 1:48
Speaker 6: flooding all across the region. So we're going to check
• 1:50
Speaker 6: in first with my colleague from WWK, meteorologist Brian Hughes
• 1:55
Speaker 6: and the storm Tracker thirteen forecasts. Brian, thanks so much
• 1:59
Speaker 6: for getting up with You're always awake at this time.
• 2:02
  Speaker 8: I'm grateful that you're here.
• 2:04
Speaker 5: I've been awake since one o'clock this morning. Everything's good, Oh.
• 2:07
Speaker 6: Well, We are so happy that you're here. Thank you
• 2:10
Speaker 6: for doing that. You gave me the wake up call
• 2:12
Speaker 6: this morning to you and Koop just to be sure.
• 2:15
Speaker 6: It's a late night after the eleven o'clock news. Hey,
• 2:17
Speaker 6: so we got a couple of inches of snow. Exactly
• 2:19
Speaker 6: what you guys said happened? Did happen? What's the day
• 2:22
Speaker 6: gonna end up like today?
• 2:24
Speaker 5: Well, we're still dealing with some of the snow bands.
• 2:27
Speaker 5: A matter of fact, we've got a significant band so
• 2:29
Speaker 5: that it's running across the running across northwest and southeast,
• 2:32
Speaker 5: across Kinnawk County, especially up around Tupper's Creek back up
• 2:37
Speaker 5: to Cissonville, and you know, actually coming out of the
• 2:41
Speaker 5: John Davis power Plant, we've got some power plant effect
• 2:44
Speaker 5: snow that's happening. That's enhancing a bit of that band
• 2:48
Speaker 5: as well. I mean, it's incredible to see. We see
• 2:50
Speaker 5: this all the time around the country, but with around
• 2:54
Speaker 5: power plants that can enhance a band of snow.
• 2:56
Speaker 4: But so we got that going for us.
• 2:58
Speaker 5: But at the moment, just you know, just up there
• 3:01
Speaker 5: at the Cistonville exit on I sixty four northbound, we
• 3:06
Speaker 5: have real time traffic showing us that thirteen years World
• 3:10
Speaker 5: Time Traffic showing us that right now the road is
• 3:12
Speaker 5: shut down northbound Cissonville Walk or Drive. We have a
• 3:16
Speaker 5: vehicle rollover. It's pretty bad scene up there with severe injuries.
• 3:20
Speaker 5: So that's an alert. If you're going I seventy seven northbound,
• 3:24
Speaker 5: it is shut down up there around the Cistanville exit.
• 3:26
Speaker 5: But for the rest of this morning, we're still gonna
• 3:29
Speaker 5: deal with some of the flurries, some of these light
• 3:30
Speaker 5: bands of snow that are slowly starting to wrap up
• 3:34
Speaker 5: across the area, and then we're going to be left
• 3:36
Speaker 5: with flurries for the rest of the day. But over
• 3:40
Speaker 5: the next probably one to two hours, still a couple
• 3:44
Speaker 5: of these bands of snow are going to show up,
• 3:45
Speaker 5: and they are going to produce some wide aut conditions
• 3:47
Speaker 5: briefly and also some extra slick spots where road crews
• 3:51
Speaker 5: have already attacked a lot of these roads. A good
• 3:53
Speaker 5: part about it for this morning was that road crews
• 3:56
Speaker 5: were able to attack everything at the overnight hours. Compared
• 3:59
Speaker 5: to yesterday when it took you know, three four o'clock
• 4:02
Speaker 5: in the morning for the snow to start. A lot
• 4:04
Speaker 5: of it started about you know, anywhere from midnight to
• 4:06
Speaker 5: one o'clock in the morning, so they were able to
• 4:09
Speaker 5: get a better handle. But still, this is that snow
• 4:11
Speaker 5: that's very fine. It's obviously extra cold with temperature to
• 4:15
Speaker 5: the mid upper teens, and that allows for it to
• 4:18
Speaker 5: not be very plowable. You can runt a plow across it,
• 4:21
Speaker 5: but it doesn't do it doesn't do a lot of good.
• 4:23
Speaker 8: So it comes right back.
• 4:24
Speaker 5: So yeah, exactly, so you're really looking at so those
• 4:28
Speaker 5: intersections really slick right now, and it's just you know,
• 4:32
Speaker 5: and you can't bite this with all the salt because
• 4:34
Speaker 5: when you look at the amount of salt you'd have
• 4:36
Speaker 5: to use, it's just absurd. Speaking of that, speaking that
• 4:40
Speaker 5: yesterday evening, I was able to sit down chat with
• 4:44
Speaker 5: the mayor for a little bit, Mayor Amy Goodwood and Charleston,
• 4:47
Speaker 5: and she said they have in the entire the previous
• 4:51
Speaker 5: six years. You can add up all the salt purchase
• 4:53
Speaker 5: of the previous six years. They've bought more salt this
• 4:57
Speaker 5: year than the previous six years combined.
• 5:00
Speaker 6: Goodness, gracious, well, we've needed it this year. I mean, really,
• 5:03
Speaker 6: if you like four seasons, this is the year for it.
• 5:05
  Speaker 6: That's for sure.
• 5:06
Speaker 8: We haven't had it in our latest in a long time.
• 5:09
Speaker 4: No, we haven't. And you know, she and I were joking.
• 5:13
Speaker 5: She goes, I thought, usually you like to have fun
• 5:16
Speaker 5: doing your forecast stuff like this. I was like, girl,
• 5:18
Speaker 5: I have fun all the time.
• 5:19
Speaker 4: This year, I'm tired.
• 5:20
Speaker 8: I bet you are. I bet you are. I'm trd well.
• 5:25
Speaker 8: That means you are exhausted.
• 5:27
Speaker 6: And we certainly appreciate all the work you guys have
• 5:29
Speaker 6: been doing because it's it's kept us all safe, and
• 5:31
Speaker 6: it's kept us all informed, and it's important.
• 5:34
Speaker 8: It's just been so tough.
• 5:35
Speaker 6: And then you think about those flood damaged areas and
• 5:38
Speaker 6: the destruction that we're seeing there, and I just can't
• 5:40
Speaker 6: help but think about mcdell County right now, especially and
• 5:43
Speaker 6: just what they're dealing with.
• 5:44
Speaker 8: It's like a skiing rink in some places.
• 5:47
  Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
• 5:48
Speaker 5: Listen, you add the snow on top of the flooding
• 5:50
Speaker 5: and add insult to injury.
• 5:52
  Speaker 9: Litt War.
• 5:54
Speaker 5: War, West Virginia and McDowell County hit the all time
• 5:57
Speaker 5: record for the tug fork and in those records state
• 6:00
Speaker 5: back to the eighteen hundreds, to to like the eighteen
• 6:03
Speaker 5: eighteen seventies, eighteen sixties, eighteen seventies, and when you hit
• 6:07
Speaker 5: the all time record on a river flood, you know,
• 6:09
Speaker 5: there's just you have no comprehension of where it's going,
• 6:12
Speaker 5: what it's doing. And then you look at you know,
• 6:15
Speaker 5: the rest of the tug fork, and then you get
• 6:17
Speaker 5: to the levisa a tug fork specifically, I mean these
• 6:20
Speaker 5: this is the highest river spens in seventy seven and
• 6:22
Speaker 5: it's the second highest crest they've ever had when you
• 6:26
Speaker 5: go back to the eighteen hundreds. So you've got a lot,
• 6:29
Speaker 5: you know, So you've got that big you know, the coal,
• 6:32
Speaker 5: big coal, little coal, the you know, the guide dot,
• 6:35
Speaker 5: all those rivers that went up, and then you also
• 6:37
Speaker 5: look at the canal. I mean, it's the highest it
• 6:39
Speaker 5: was it had been in four years. So you add
• 6:42
Speaker 5: all that flooding push you had the snow on top
• 6:44
Speaker 5: of it for recovery. Ever since, it's just difficult to
• 6:46
Speaker 5: deal with. But the good news is for this weekend,
• 6:50
Speaker 5: it's the first weekend out of the last four, you know,
• 6:53
Speaker 5: cutting this weekend that we've not had flooding ongoing, and
• 6:58
Speaker 5: we're going to have sunshine mixing in. Well it's not
• 7:01
Speaker 5: going to be the warmest, still, we're going to be
• 7:03
Speaker 5: in the forties. It's warm, and it's been all week,
• 7:05
Speaker 5: and then as we head in next week, we're going
• 7:07
Speaker 5: to be in the fifties. So there is good news. Unfortunately,
• 7:09
Speaker 5: a little bit of shower activity on Tuesday and then
• 7:12
Speaker 5: rain on Thursday. But still we'll take fifties dry skies
• 7:17
Speaker 5: for at least four days so we can get some
• 7:19
  Speaker 5: work done.
• 7:20
Speaker 6: Absolutely, it'll be a nice break for everybody too. That
• 7:22
Speaker 6: sun goes a long way too, you know, a little
• 7:24
Speaker 6: vitamin indeed is a body good.
• 7:26
Speaker 5: It does. And we've got listen, we've got cracks of
• 7:28
Speaker 5: sunshine back to our north and west. We're going to
• 7:30
Speaker 5: see a little bit of that this afternoon, so that's
• 7:32
Speaker 5: good news. But still another cold night. I mean, temperatures
• 7:35
  Speaker 5: may five degrees.
• 7:36
Speaker 2: Below normal for today.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: Goodness, and then yeah, and tonight temperatures fifteen degrees below normal.
• 7:42
Speaker 5: We you know, we're gonna get others polar bart Tex
• 7:44
  Speaker 5: for a bit.
• 7:45
Speaker 10: We do have an.
• 7:46
Speaker 5: Opportunity to see the polar bar text one more time
• 7:48
Speaker 5: next month, so we're going to keep our eyes on that.
• 7:51
Speaker 5: But for now, let's the eye on the frize. Is
• 7:53
Speaker 5: the sunshine of the weekend that's dry and no flooding.
• 7:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's definite. We're not out of the woods just yet.
• 7:58
Speaker 6: Meteorologist Brian Hughes with Storm Trackers thirteen. We are so
• 8:00
Speaker 6: grateful that you're here this morning. Thank you go get
• 8:02
Speaker 6: some rest as you were.
• 8:04
Speaker 8: Talking to something like that, all right, something like that.
• 8:06
Speaker 8: I see it today at noon, Brian, Thank you so much.
• 8:08
  Speaker 8: We appreciate it.
• 8:09
Speaker 6: As we continue to talk about the weather this morning,
• 8:11
Speaker 6: we should definitely go to our website and check out
• 8:15
Speaker 6: some of the stories that Jeff Jenkins have posted there.
• 8:18
Speaker 6: The devastation is great in so many places, Coop, and
• 8:22
Speaker 6: it's just nice to see so many people coming together.
• 8:26
Speaker 6: We're going to talk with somebody here in just a
• 8:27
Speaker 6: little bit, Kevin Clendennon, the chief with the Clendon and
• 8:30
Speaker 6: Volunteer Fire Department. They were out doing swift water rescues
• 8:33
Speaker 6: over the weekend. So nice to see people who've been
• 8:35
Speaker 6: there in Clendena and they know all too well the
• 8:38
Speaker 6: struggles that come with flooding. So they're going to talk
• 8:40
Speaker 6: about how they helped out this weekend, and that's coming up.
• 8:44
Speaker 6: And just a little bit, we also have some big
• 8:45
Speaker 6: news out of eastern Kennell County today.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, looking forward to this.
• 8:48
Speaker 6: Yes, I'm really excited to share this with everybody. Lance
• 8:51

• 8:53
Speaker 6: who definitely have that need for adventure.
• 8:58
Speaker 4: Yes, that's nice tea.

• 13:49
Speaker 6: here to tell us about what will be almost heaven
• 13:52
Speaker 6: for people who love rough roads.
• 13:53
  Speaker 8: I think that's a fair assessment.
• 13:55
Speaker 6: With a County Commissioner, Lance Wheeler here this morning, along
• 13:58
Speaker 6: with it his guests Eric Large and Chris Ingram, thanks
• 14:01
  Speaker 6: for being here.
• 14:01
Speaker 15: Guys, Hey, thanks for having us.
• 14:03
  Speaker 4: Amanda.
• 14:03
Speaker 6: This is really a project that has the potential to
• 14:07
Speaker 6: do major things for the Upper Canal Valley, for the
• 14:11
Speaker 6: eastern Kana County, and it can bring in tourism. There's
• 14:14
Speaker 6: some economic development here, but most importantly, if you're an
• 14:18
Speaker 6: adrenaline junkie, this is an announcement you want to hear.
• 14:21
Speaker 16: Well, let's back up for one second. You know, in
• 14:23
Speaker 16: twenty twenty one, the Knall County Commission announced the project,
• 14:26
Speaker 16: the Arc Gateway Plan. What that plan was was looking
• 14:29
Speaker 16: at economic development for the Upper Canal Valley in eastern
• 14:32
Speaker 16: Conal County and seeing what we can do to rebattalize
• 14:34
Speaker 16: that area in that community. One of the things that
• 14:36
Speaker 16: we heard multiple times from the people of Kanaal County
• 14:40
Speaker 16: in Eastern County is we want an ATV trail. We've
• 14:43
Speaker 16: talked to Hatfilm McCoy and we've been working with that,
• 14:47
Speaker 16: but they continue to say we want an ATV trail
• 14:50
Speaker 16: not only for our people to be able to enjoy riding,
• 14:53
Speaker 16: but to have tourism and economic development, bringing businesses that
• 14:57
Speaker 16: we've seen in southern West Virginia due to the hat Film,
• 14:59
Speaker 16: a Quoit tra else and so this is something that
• 15:01
Speaker 16: I've been working on for two years now, doing everything
• 15:04
Speaker 16: we possibly can to bring that opportunity to the eastern
• 15:08
Speaker 16: part of the county. This has been a big project.
• 15:10
Speaker 16: You know, the County Commission has been working on economic
• 15:14
Speaker 16: development through tourism and outdoor recreation. I mean, just look
• 15:17
Speaker 16: at Shawnee for example. Look at the amount of people
• 15:19
Speaker 16: that come in out of state spending their hard end
• 15:22
Speaker 16: dollars right here in this county with our local mom
• 15:24
Speaker 16: and pop businesses, but also the Tornado Trails dirt bike
• 15:27
Speaker 16: trails we have in Tornado. This has been incredible. This
• 15:30
Speaker 16: is another piece of that I call it an anchor
• 15:33
Speaker 16: to our plan in eastern Connaal County. What this is
• 15:36
Speaker 16: is we're looking at a multiple miles of trails for
• 15:40
Speaker 16: ATVs jeeps that are going to be built in eastern
• 15:43
Speaker 16: Connel County in the Quincy area. That's going to be
• 15:46
Speaker 16: able to attract people not just here in our county,
• 15:49
Speaker 16: not just in our state, but across state lines. This
• 15:52
Speaker 16: is a big project. We're proud to announce Phase one.
• 15:55
Speaker 16: We're looking at currently two thousand acres and putting in
• 15:58
Speaker 16: those trails, but potential, we're hopeful down the road. It's
• 16:01
Speaker 16: going to take time, but potentially having over one hundred
• 16:05
Speaker 16: thousand miles of trails in eastern Kennall County. This is
• 16:09
Speaker 16: going to be potentially one of the largest parks in
• 16:13
Speaker 16: the nation. And so here with us is Chris and
• 16:17
Speaker 16: Eric who are part of the Outlaw Appalachian Outlaw Trails
• 16:21
Speaker 16: and they are local guys, local business owners who are
• 16:26
Speaker 16: enthusiasts as you said, and they saw this project that
• 16:29
Speaker 16: we had in the Gateway Plan. They've been working with
• 16:32
Speaker 16: me in my office for two years now and we're
• 16:34
Speaker 16: proud to have this announcement. I think it's going to
• 16:36
Speaker 16: be a great opportunity, and I'm looking forward to them
• 16:38
Speaker 16: being able to share their story of how they got
• 16:40
Speaker 16: to where they are today on your show and talk
• 16:42
  Speaker 16: about it.
• 16:42
Speaker 6: Yeah, this is so cool you guys, thank you so
• 16:44
Speaker 6: much for being here. And I'm sure it's fun to
• 16:46
Speaker 6: really get a chance to finally talk about the Appalachian
• 16:49
Speaker 6: Outlaw Trails. Twenty five miles is there, It's ready to go.
• 16:54
Speaker 6: How many more miles do you think you guys are
• 16:58
Speaker 6: going to get accomplished as you were on phase one?
• 17:01
  Speaker 8: It's so cool.
• 17:02
Speaker 3: Into phase one, we're looking to easily double our expansion
• 17:05
Speaker 3: within the core project there at phase one, with the
• 17:09
Speaker 3: ability to grow that pretty substantially over the next few years.
• 17:13
Speaker 3: But it's an easy double within as in weather breaks here.
• 17:16
Speaker 3: Our core focus right now with Phase one was truly
• 17:18
Speaker 3: creating the infrastructure to kind of build off of for
• 17:21
Speaker 3: the later phases and truly kind of create a resort
• 17:25
Speaker 3: experience as we start for the trailhead. We are located
• 17:30
Speaker 3: really well for a project like this, with one mile
• 17:32
Speaker 3: off of Interstate sixty four. We have a red light
• 17:35
Speaker 3: offer Route sixty headed into a two lane blacktop that
• 17:38
Speaker 3: brings us up to a few hundred acres of flat
• 17:40
Speaker 3: developable area to truly start this as a good off
• 17:45
Speaker 3: road park setting, and so our goal has been here
• 17:48
Speaker 3: into phase one is naturally to get started as a
• 17:50
Speaker 3: trailhead and start building the needed trails from that start location,
• 17:55
Speaker 3: but to really host some large events that are coming
• 17:57
Speaker 3: to our area that are really exciting for economic growth.
• 18:00
Speaker 3: We've been working with Ultra four Racing Series, which is
• 18:02
Speaker 3: a large UTV full size kind of trophy truck series.
• 18:07
Speaker 3: They're super big out west. They wanted to have an
• 18:09
Speaker 3: East East coast kind of footprint, and so we're looking
• 18:12
Speaker 3: to bring about fifteen thousand people for our year one event,
• 18:15
Speaker 3: which is slated for twenty twenty six. They have went
• 18:18
Speaker 3: ahead and kind of put us in the driver's seat
• 18:20
Speaker 3: to build them a full track of facility there. We
• 18:23
Speaker 3: have a fifteen mile course this built on the property
• 18:26
Speaker 3: already that is pro their specs, along with a few
• 18:28
Speaker 3: other events like West Virginia Agency gn CC Racing, which
• 18:32
Speaker 3: is nationwide that's ATV and dirt bikes. They're looking to
• 18:37
Speaker 3: bring a series to us next year as well. So
• 18:38
Speaker 3: our true goal here for phase one is to establish
• 18:41
Speaker 3: some infrastructure on the mountain to try to bring in
• 18:44
Speaker 3: some large events bring in a lot of people to
• 18:46
Speaker 3: the county and we're hoping that's going to kickstart us
• 18:48
Speaker 3: into our growth into our later phases.
• 18:51
Speaker 6: It's an exciting time and exciting project that's Derek larger
• 18:54
Speaker 6: with the Appalachian Outlaw Trails. Chris Ingram, what was the
• 18:58
Speaker 6: motivation behind this project for you?
• 19:01
  Speaker 14: I know you're an enthusiast, definitely, So we've I grew
• 19:05
Speaker 14: up riding ATVs and dirt bikes and side by sides,
• 19:07
Speaker 14: and I'm actually from the Upercannal Valley myself, so it's
• 19:11
Speaker 14: always been near and dear to my heart. It's full
• 19:12
Speaker 14: of great people, and I wanted to do something big
• 19:16
Speaker 14: for our area to bring, you know, jobs and economic
• 19:19
Speaker 14: growth to the Perkanal Valley. So I think this will
• 19:21
Speaker 14: be a great project and I think we'll definitely achieve that.
• 19:25
Speaker 8: Tell people a little more about where exactly.
• 19:28
Speaker 14: This is, Yeah, So it's located across from Riverside High School.
• 19:33
Speaker 14: There is a two lane blacktop road to the top
• 19:35
Speaker 14: of the mountain. It's actually I guess slated as Diamond,
• 19:38
Speaker 14: West Virginia, but it's right there near Bell and that
• 19:41
Speaker 14: will be the official trailhead due to its great access,
• 19:44
Speaker 14: low residential impact, and.
• 19:47
Speaker 15: It's located in Quincy.
• 19:49
Speaker 6: And no doubt about it the folks that live out
• 19:51
Speaker 6: there and beyond. But you know we have there are
• 19:53
Speaker 6: a lot of enthusiasts just in that part of Kanaw
• 19:56
Speaker 6: County who will love this. I know you want to
• 19:58
Speaker 6: make it a destination with some campsites with some hookups,
• 20:01
Speaker 6: and then some primitive campsites as well, But we also
• 20:05
Speaker 6: are talking about maybe like a little concert venue.
• 20:07
  Speaker 8: Is that right?
• 20:09
  Speaker 15: Yeah?
• 20:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, So we're talking about in our as we scale
• 20:12
Speaker 3: up into our master plan that the Kinon County Commission
• 20:15
Speaker 3: and has worked with us along with CEC Engineering, we
• 20:19
Speaker 3: are looking to not only create this is just some campsites,
• 20:22
Speaker 3: but you know, cabins and amphitheater of some capacity. And
• 20:25
Speaker 3: our true goal is, although we are enthusiasts, this is
• 20:28
Speaker 3: something that's near and dear to our heart to have
• 20:31
Speaker 3: a good expansive off road trail system in the area.
• 20:35
Speaker 3: We want to truly create an area for all outdoor
• 20:38
Speaker 3: wreck whether that is mountain biking or single track dirt
• 20:42
Speaker 3: bike riding, from you know, hiking, horseback riding, having clay
• 20:48
Speaker 3: shooting venues, just anything that would bring somebody in that
• 20:52
Speaker 3: they would like to enjoy something that is not just
• 20:55
Speaker 3: off road access, that's truly an outdoor wreck destination.
• 20:58
Speaker 6: Yeah, something for everybody, because you might have someone in
• 21:00
Speaker 6: the family who's maybe not so keen on getting in
• 21:03
Speaker 6: the big truck and riding along all the rocks and
• 21:05
Speaker 6: the great roads that are out there, but they might
• 21:07
Speaker 6: enjoy something else or just sitting by a campfire. And
• 21:10
Speaker 6: you guys are really working to make that destination happen
• 21:13
Speaker 6: and it's exciting. So there's twenty five miles there already
• 21:17
Speaker 6: and we can expect to see more here very soon, right.
• 21:19
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, as soon as weather breaks. You know, we're
• 21:22
Speaker 3: going to continue our excavation portion of separate things. And
• 21:26
Speaker 3: as we're expanding our acreage here, we've got a lot
• 21:29
Speaker 3: of other trails are already slated to go in to truly
• 21:32
Speaker 3: raise that mileage aspect of some stuff that's already existing
• 21:36
Speaker 3: and some things that we're going to go ahead and
• 21:38
  Speaker 3: establish there.
• 21:39
Speaker 6: Okay, Well, County Commissioner Lance Wheeler is with us along
• 21:43
Speaker 6: with Chris Ingram and Eric Large with the Appalache and
• 21:46
Speaker 6: Outlaw trails, and I just want to ask you about
• 21:49
Speaker 6: the bigger picture when it comes to the Upper canav Valley.
• 21:52
Speaker 6: Of course, it's a place that was coal was such
• 21:55
Speaker 6: an important part of that and we're seeing some changes
• 21:57
Speaker 6: in that industry. We continue to see those changes. This
• 22:00
Speaker 6: project is one piece of a bigger plan.
• 22:04
  Speaker 15: Yeah.
• 22:04
Speaker 16: You know, when you talk to people in eastern Knalk County,
• 22:06
Speaker 16: the thing that they will say is one of the
• 22:08
Speaker 16: things that we have that's best selling us is our mountains,
• 22:12
Speaker 16: our beautiful environment. People want to come. You know, when
• 22:15
Speaker 16: you come there, you see and you're in awe. And
• 22:17
Speaker 16: so this is part of that gateway plan that I mentioned,
• 22:20
Speaker 16: and I believe what we're talking about today with these
• 22:23
Speaker 16: trails is an anchor to this ability to be able
• 22:26
Speaker 16: to improve economic development businesses, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and
• 22:33
Speaker 16: when we talk about this, we don't talk about just
• 22:36
  Speaker 16: economic development.
• 22:37
Speaker 8: We talk about the community.
• 22:38
Speaker 16: This is what I'm most proud about is that we
• 22:40
Speaker 16: have Eric and Chris who are local guys, local business
• 22:43
Speaker 16: owners who understand our area, understand our people, and they're
• 22:46
Speaker 16: willing to invest into this project and make something great
• 22:50
Speaker 16: because they care about our community. This isn't an outside
• 22:53
Speaker 16: investor coming in and putting in the money. These are
• 22:56
Speaker 16: people who know us, they understand us, and they're willing
• 22:59
Speaker 16: to work work with us, and they know where we
• 23:01
  Speaker 16: really need a.
• 23:02
Speaker 15: Lot of these problems and solutions.
• 23:04
Speaker 16: And so that's what has been incredible working for them
• 23:07
Speaker 16: for two years now and having them work with the
• 23:10
Speaker 16: Kennall County Commission, getting them this planning, this master plan
• 23:13
Speaker 16: together and helping them along. And that's what's exciting about
• 23:17
Speaker 16: Phase one. Phase one, twenty five miles doesn't seem like
• 23:20
Speaker 16: a lot, but there's multiple phases from here, and we're
• 23:23
Speaker 16: going to continue to work. We're going to continue to push,
• 23:25
Speaker 16: but we can't get to the finish line if we
• 23:28
Speaker 16: don't start at the starting line, right Amana. So today
• 23:30
Speaker 16: we're starting at the starting line. We're very excited about that.
• 23:33
Speaker 16: I'm excited to work with them, and I know they've
• 23:35
Speaker 16: had conversations with the state, had conversations with the state Tourism.
• 23:39
Speaker 16: We're going to continue to work together as a team
• 23:42
Speaker 16: because that's what's given us the most progress in this county.
• 23:45
Speaker 16: And I'm excited to see what this is going to foretelled.
• 23:48
Speaker 16: At the very end, I think we're going to have
• 23:50
Speaker 16: something extremely incredible, not just for tourism, but for the community,
• 23:54
Speaker 16: a place that families can bring their kids from Bell,
• 23:57
Speaker 16: from Quincy, from Diamond, from Cedar Grove, and from out
• 24:01
Speaker 16: of state. But you know, locally, we can have an
• 24:03
Speaker 16: area that it's safe for them to go. It's going
• 24:06
Speaker 16: to be maintained and they're going to have a lot
• 24:08
Speaker 16: of enjoyment. And then that community aspect you mentioned, you know,
• 24:11
Speaker 16: the Amphitheater, those things down the road that we can
• 24:14
Speaker 16: give into that community and really provide the culture and
• 24:17
Speaker 16: the spirit of that area and really show it to
• 24:20
Speaker 16: the rest of the world. That's what's incredible to me.
• 24:22
Speaker 6: It's a cornerstone for sure. Just to get in the
• 24:24
Speaker 6: weeds for a second. You guys, tell me about these
• 24:26
Speaker 6: roads that are out there.
• 24:28
  Speaker 17: Roads.
• 24:28
Speaker 6: I put that in quotes here as got your face
• 24:30
Speaker 6: is just lit up when I said that, Why are
• 24:33
Speaker 6: these spots in eastern Kanak County so awesome to take
• 24:36
Speaker 6: your off road vehicles on?
• 24:37
Speaker 15: Well, I'll tell you we.
• 24:40
Speaker 3: Have always been involved in this space, and I guess
• 24:42
Speaker 3: I'll kind of tea back on that. What the real
• 24:44
Speaker 3: mission of this was is Chris and I have grown
• 24:45
Speaker 3: up enthusiasts. We've been spending most of our time in
• 24:48
Speaker 3: the outdoors as kids, we spend the majority of that
• 24:51
Speaker 3: time riding ATVs and dirt bikes and later on when
• 24:54
Speaker 3: things progress into UTVs, and so this has been our
• 24:56
Speaker 3: true passion for anything that we do on the weekends
• 24:59
Speaker 3: with our our families, with our kids. And so our
• 25:02
Speaker 3: true goal was we grew up riding this area most
• 25:06
Speaker 3: of our lives and as everybody knows, it's a lot
• 25:08
Speaker 3: of different private properties and over the years there's been
• 25:11
Speaker 3: a lot of different encumbrances you run into of some
• 25:13
Speaker 3: properties maybe getting shut down and our access being taken
• 25:17
Speaker 3: from us in some capacity. And so our true goal
• 25:19
Speaker 3: with this is kind of really a personal project that
• 25:22
Speaker 3: we wanted to preserve our access to this trail usage
• 25:25
Speaker 3: for ourselves, and in tandem with that, you know, we're
• 25:29
Speaker 3: essentially creating the ability for everyone to enjoy it in
• 25:32
Speaker 3: the future that is local and from out of state.
• 25:34
Speaker 3: So you know, the area we have truly is a
• 25:38
Speaker 3: gold mine in the capacity that is some of the
• 25:40
Speaker 3: best trail systems that we've ever been around. You know,
• 25:43
Speaker 3: we've ridden all over the East Coast, We've ridden in
• 25:46
Speaker 3: Tennessee and Kentucky and all these different large off road
• 25:49
Speaker 3: park areas. These public riding state agency areas. And one
• 25:53
Speaker 3: thing we'll find is we always enjoy coming back home
• 25:56
Speaker 3: and enjoying our area here. And we've brought a lot
• 25:58
Speaker 3: of people over the years from out of state to
• 26:00
Speaker 3: hear that continue to come back, and you know, it's
• 26:04
Speaker 3: truly something a lot of people don't understand until they
• 26:06
Speaker 3: actually step out of Kennall County that we have something
• 26:09
  Speaker 3: that's wonderful here.
• 26:11
Speaker 4: It is truly a.
• 26:12
Speaker 3: Passion project of Chris and I to conserve the trail
• 26:14
Speaker 3: system we have now and be able to allow that
• 26:17
Speaker 3: to expand in the future and let everybody that enjoys
• 26:19
Speaker 3: it now be able to continue to enjoy it with
• 26:21
Speaker 3: their family moving forward.
• 26:22
Speaker 6: Yes, families are going to be very excited about this.
• 26:25
Speaker 6: And I also just really quickly want to touch on this, Chris,
• 26:27
Speaker 6: there's a spin off here because it's not just about
• 26:30
Speaker 6: the trails, but there are people who are excited about
• 26:33
Speaker 6: this because of the other opportunities it's going to bring
• 26:36
Speaker 6: as far as equipment and things like that.
• 26:39
  Speaker 8: Talk about that.
• 26:40
Speaker 14: Yeah, So essentially we're going to have, you know, a
• 26:43
Speaker 14: rental fleet and I think that you know, that'll be
• 26:46
Speaker 14: good for people who are wanting to fly into the
• 26:47
Speaker 14: area and enjoy the park. But then also at a
• 26:49
Speaker 14: local level. You know, I think rising water raises all ships.
• 26:54
Speaker 14: You're going to have locals who will make investments themselves
• 26:57
Speaker 14: and to you know, basically open businesses, businesses. I'll support
• 27:00
Speaker 14: the project, and you know that's just our overall overall
• 27:04
Speaker 14: goal is to make make you know, economic development as
• 27:09
Speaker 14: a whole for the All I know.
• 27:11
Speaker 6: Is that's buffet. Better stock up the shones buffet that
• 27:14
Speaker 6: is out there at Quincy. You've been put on notice.
• 27:17
Speaker 7: That's always the best, right. We did have a question
• 27:18
Speaker 7: that we had a flood of questions actually coming in
• 27:20
Speaker 7: on the text line. So I'm just going to kind
• 27:21
Speaker 7: of sum them all up and once people want dates,
• 27:23
Speaker 7: they want to when you've tapped into something, because a
• 27:25
Speaker 7: lot of people want to know when are they going
• 27:27
Speaker 7: to be able to take advantage of the system.
• 27:29
Speaker 3: So, of course we've been working on this project since
• 27:30
Speaker 3: twenty twenty one and I want to well, I've got
• 27:33
  Speaker 3: the moment here.
• 27:33
Speaker 15: I want to thank Commissioner Wheeler.
• 27:35
Speaker 3: You've been wonderful to help us along as we grow
• 27:38
Speaker 3: and we can't thank you guys enough, the County Commission.
• 27:40
Speaker 15: But you know, one thing after another.
• 27:42
Speaker 3: It's we've been building towards this, right, And that's one
• 27:44
Speaker 3: thing we get asked every year, what's the date? And
• 27:46
Speaker 3: it's always man, we're hoping for Springing next year. We're
• 27:48
Speaker 3: host to Springing next year. We were talking to those
• 27:52
Speaker 3: larger event venues about potentially being on their their schedule
• 27:56
Speaker 3: for twenty twenty five.
• 27:58
Speaker 15: With the lack of infrastructure that.
• 27:59
Speaker 3: We were able to really truly provide these events in
• 28:01
Speaker 3: a real professional manner, we had to push a lot
• 28:04
Speaker 3: of that stuff off till next year. So as of
• 28:06
Speaker 3: right now, we're looking at probably spring of twenty six.
• 28:09
Speaker 3: You know, we've got a lot of existing things that
• 28:12
Speaker 3: are there now we could open today, but to open
• 28:15
Speaker 3: a true professional fashion and be able to manage everything
• 28:17
Speaker 3: correctly from you know, a safety aspect or just generally
• 28:22
Speaker 3: having the needed amenities, we're probably looking at sometime next
• 28:25
Speaker 3: year is where we're headed right now.
• 28:27
Speaker 7: I have great empathy for that. Ask us when our
• 28:29
Speaker 7: new studios are going to be ready? Right, right, have
• 28:31
  Speaker 7: great empathy where.
• 28:32
  Speaker 8: You're when it's ready?
• 28:33
Speaker 6: Right, As a good contractor would say, when it is ready.
• 28:36
Speaker 8: I didn't even know you guys were coming on.
• 28:38
Speaker 6: What the topic was going to be, and I know
• 28:39
Speaker 6: that there are some people at my house very excited
• 28:42
Speaker 6: about this project this morning, so I know that that's
• 28:45
Speaker 6: a ripple effect all across our community.
• 28:47
Speaker 8: Thanks for coming in, you guys, appreciate it.
• 28:49
Speaker 16: Hey man, thanks for having us.
• 28:50

• 29:00
  Speaker 10: Is.
• 29:00
Speaker 6: If we don't use the land that we have in
• 29:01

• 29:07

Speaker 6: Thank you so much, Kevin Clinden, and of course is
• 33:23
Speaker 6: someone that people known and trusted for so many years
• 33:26
Speaker 6: as he helps to keep people safe in Knaw County
• 33:29
Speaker 6: and over the weekend he was down south making sure
• 33:33
Speaker 6: that people who were in these terrible floodwaters, Kevin were rescued.
• 33:38
Speaker 8: Thank you so much for joining us.
• 33:40
  Speaker 10: Thank you, Amanda.
• 33:41
Speaker 6: I know the Clendon and Volunteer Fire Department has a
• 33:43
Speaker 6: rich history and that you're so proud to be a
• 33:45
Speaker 6: part of it. I do want to let everyone know
• 33:47
Speaker 6: that as you and I are talking, Chief Governor Morrisey
• 33:50
Speaker 6: just started his news briefing to talk about the flooding
• 33:53
Speaker 6: situation as a whole. There were one hundred and thirty
• 33:57
Speaker 6: five water rescues that he knows about that you just
• 34:00
Speaker 6: mentioned in that news conference, and Kevin, I know you
• 34:04
Speaker 6: and your crew were a part of those swift water rescues.
• 34:08
Speaker 6: Tell me about the conditions that you experienced.
• 34:11
Speaker 10: Well, when we deployed Saturday night, it was about nine
• 34:15
Speaker 10: or nine thirty when we got the call and we
• 34:17
Speaker 10: got our team on the road by eleven o'clock and
• 34:21
Speaker 10: that consisted of the Clinton of Fire Apartment, the Glasgow
• 34:23
Speaker 10: Fire Departments, in the West Indian National Guard, and we
• 34:27
Speaker 10: linked up with Ripley in South Charleston and then I
• 34:31
Speaker 10: know Charleston units down there too. So we didn't get
• 34:35
Speaker 10: down into mcdowll and Mingo County till about midnight.
• 34:40
Speaker 8: And what did you see when you got there, Chief, Well.
• 34:43
Speaker 10: The water was a lot of roads were blocked. You know,
• 34:46
Speaker 10: we tried to go to like the town of Oceania,
• 34:49
Speaker 10: and we met up with d NR units over there.
• 34:52
Speaker 10: The roads were impassable, so we made contacts to check
• 34:57
Speaker 10: on some local residents that just need a welfare check,
• 35:00
Speaker 10: and then we pulled back to Jesse, West Virginia and
• 35:06
Speaker 10: the states the units there until the sun came up
• 35:09
  Speaker 10: on Sunday morning.
• 35:10
Speaker 8: Wow, how grateful were people when you shut up their door?
• 35:14
Speaker 10: Oh, they were grateful. They had a heart impacted area.
• 35:17
Speaker 10: You know, I've been to a lot of floods in
• 35:19
Speaker 10: my career and that were heart impact and a lot
• 35:23
Speaker 10: of people were just trying to figure out how to
• 35:25
Speaker 10: get around because there were so many roads that were
• 35:27
Speaker 10: closed by water and mud slides and just different things.
• 35:32
Speaker 10: So there was a lot of rerouting going on. And
• 35:36
Speaker 10: we also linked up with the Western State Police in
• 35:38
Speaker 10: the area and they guided us on most of our
• 35:42
Speaker 10: travels from town to town on how to get there.
• 35:45
Speaker 6: Mcdown County had over four inches of rain in twenty
• 35:48
Speaker 6: four hours, and when you think about the topography there,
• 35:51
Speaker 6: what does that put that in perspective for folks who
• 35:54
  Speaker 6: may not understand.
• 35:55
Speaker 8: What that kind of rain and that amount of time
• 35:57
  Speaker 8: means there.
• 35:58
Speaker 10: Yeah, so the terrain is real steep. You know. We
• 36:01
Speaker 10: went to town of Welt and went the first place we
• 36:03
Speaker 10: went was over to the hospital and they had taken
• 36:06
Speaker 10: a big hit the night before, and actually about one am,
• 36:11
Speaker 10: the seventh boat seven crew made a rescue over out
• 36:14
Speaker 10: of the hospital's parking lot and they had some a
• 36:17
Speaker 10: couple of folks that had been on a car top
• 36:19
Speaker 10: across the street. If anybody is familiar where the railroad
• 36:23
Speaker 10: tracks was, so they had to put their boat in
• 36:25
Speaker 10: go over and do a rescue there. And that was
• 36:30
Speaker 10: the first rescue that we did when we got into
• 36:33
Speaker 10: the area. So we got them back out and we
• 36:35
Speaker 10: went back to the hospital on Sunday morning and it
• 36:38
Speaker 10: had washed some animaltons down to the bomber jankare and
• 36:41
Speaker 10: people were just trying to get a sight on the damage.
• 36:46
Speaker 10: And you know, we linked up with the fire chief
• 36:49
Speaker 10: and the Marqui manager there at mcdoale County and they
• 36:52
Speaker 10: got us surround by going some back streets and over
• 36:56
Speaker 10: the hill because the main thoroughfore was all blocked.
• 36:59
Speaker 6: What do you think about the forty nine feet foot
• 37:01
Speaker 6: crest of the Tug River. It's the second highest ever,
• 37:05
Speaker 6: I believe it's what our meteorologist, Brian Hughes said a
• 37:07
Speaker 6: little bit ago, and the governor's talking about this right now.
• 37:10
Speaker 6: It's incredible. And the tragedy that we heard about the
• 37:14
Speaker 6: family that was driving there was a mud slide. They
• 37:16
Speaker 6: were pushed into the Tug River and you know, unfortunately
• 37:21
Speaker 6: the grandparents passed away. They were both sixty nine years old.
• 37:25
Speaker 6: The grandfather was trying to take that two year old
• 37:27
Speaker 6: get them to safety. Fortunately, the younger girls that were
• 37:29
Speaker 6: in the car, they were able to.
• 37:31
Speaker 8: Make it to safety. Your heart's just really got an
• 37:35
Speaker 8: ache in so many ways when you come back and
• 37:38
Speaker 8: start thinking about what you've experienced.
• 37:41
Speaker 10: Yeah. So so our team works some of that, and
• 37:44
Speaker 10: we did some interviews of some of my witnesses and
• 37:47
Speaker 10: it just it just breaks your heart to listen to
• 37:50
Speaker 10: the stories. And you know, so we're doing a wide
• 37:53
Speaker 10: area of searches in the town of Wales to try
• 37:56
Speaker 10: to next door the p and the terrain is like
• 37:59
Speaker 10: it is, and then by the water coming up, it
• 38:04
Speaker 10: cuts off the normal path of travel that people are
• 38:08
Speaker 10: used to taking and it is awful.
• 38:11
Speaker 8: Yeah, there's forty five sorry to interrupt you, Yeah, there's
• 38:14
Speaker 8: forty five road closures right there. The governor just said
• 38:17
Speaker 8: three of them are major roads achieve. When the flooding
• 38:20
Speaker 8: happened back in twenty sixteen, you were on the front
• 38:23
Speaker 8: lines of that, so you know what it means when
• 38:26
Speaker 8: someone like yourself and your team comes into another community
• 38:29
Speaker 8: in the dead of night in adverse conditions. To help.
• 38:34
Speaker 6: Put that in perspective for us about well, you didn't
• 38:38
  Speaker 6: hesitate to go.
• 38:40
Speaker 10: No, no, we don't hesitate to go because we've been there,
• 38:42
Speaker 10: but most first responders don't hesitate to thing that the
• 38:46
Speaker 10: people will have to understand is you hear of all
• 38:49
Speaker 10: these teams traveling. Well, we're just forced multipliers to that
• 38:53
Speaker 10: local agency. So like the Welsh fire departments, you know,
• 38:56
Speaker 10: we link up with them that emergency managers in well
• 38:59
Speaker 10: to mcdell County and Mingo County and even Raleigh County.
• 39:04
Speaker 10: We're there to help them. So when we go in,
• 39:07
Speaker 10: we're not to take over or to do anything but
• 39:11
Speaker 10: multiply their capabilities. So to give you put things in perspective,
• 39:16
Speaker 10: we were traveling with about thirty five train firefighter, paramedics,
• 39:22
Speaker 10: swift water boat operators, and rope technicians. So when we
• 39:26
Speaker 10: roll in, we've got eight boats, thirty five folks that
• 39:31
Speaker 10: can go to work that are trained and we can
• 39:33
Speaker 10: implement their MS system. If they need paramedics, we have
• 39:37
Speaker 10: paramedics in the caduat. We also have communications folks from
• 39:40
Speaker 10: the National Guard that has radio link communications back to
• 39:44
Speaker 10: Tarston to the Joint Operations Center, so we can offer
• 39:49
Speaker 10: things that they already have or maybe compromised because of
• 39:52
Speaker 10: the storm or the flooding. You know, if they're nine
• 39:56
Speaker 10: one one center goes down and that's one of the
• 39:58
Speaker 10: first things you ask, center still operational? You know, what's calls?
• 40:03
Speaker 10: What bikelogal calls do you have on the nine on
• 40:06
Speaker 10: one side that we need to help you clear. So
• 40:09
Speaker 10: it could be one of the big questions we always ask.
• 40:12
Speaker 10: Are they just inconvenience? Are the people or are they
• 40:16
Speaker 10: truly in Paeril Like folks on the cars, they've got
• 40:18
Speaker 10: to be rescued, you know, you've got to go to
• 40:20
Speaker 10: work on those. But maybe there's an other area that
• 40:23
Speaker 10: we just need to check to make sure where people
• 40:25
Speaker 10: is not trapped in a house or somebody doesn't have
• 40:27
Speaker 10: a medical problem, you know. And the other thing that
• 40:30
Speaker 10: we bring to the table is we can link up
• 40:32
Speaker 10: with the aircraft and the National Guard or even the
• 40:36
Speaker 10: medical helicopters. You know, if you have the weather, the
• 40:39
Speaker 10: weather with the challenge down there, I'll tell you on Sunday,
• 40:43
Speaker 10: we tried to get some some aircraft support and we
• 40:46
Speaker 10: couldn't get a Sunday to the front moved out. And
• 40:49
Speaker 10: that's typical with any flood, when the flood, you know,
• 40:53
Speaker 10: when the front moves in, the weather moves in, your
• 40:55
Speaker 10: aircraft are ground. That's for the first operational period, which
• 40:58
Speaker 10: is only about twelve hours. I've seen that time and
• 41:01
Speaker 10: time again. So you're left up to what you got
• 41:03
Speaker 10: on the ground to make it until we can get
• 41:06
Speaker 10: aircraft in the air and get all these established and
• 41:08
Speaker 10: start moving people that.
• 41:10
Speaker 8: Need moves well on the ground and in the air.
• 41:12
Speaker 6: We're just so grateful for people like you who step
• 41:14
Speaker 6: up and your teams and all the people that you mentioned.
• 41:17
Speaker 6: Chief Kevin Clindennon with the Clendennon Volunteer Fire Department, thank
• 41:20
Speaker 6: you for your time and thank you for what you do.
• 41:22
  Speaker 8: We appreciate it.
• 41:23
Speaker 10: Okay, thank you man.
• 41:24
Speaker 8: Have a great day.
• 41:26
Speaker 7: We appreciate that from Chief Lindon. And what a heart
• 41:30
Speaker 7: tugging story and what courage that these folks have to
• 41:33
Speaker 7: have to put up through every day to these saving
• 41:36
Speaker 7: lives and everything else.
• 41:37
Speaker 6: It's just an incredible story and processing that the days
• 41:39
Speaker 6: later is not easy.
• 41:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very hard.
• 41:41
Speaker 7: That we appreciate the chief coming when the Air with
• 41:42
Speaker 7: Us Dave Allen Show is brought to you in part
• 41:44
Speaker 7: by Morgan and Morgan that is America's largest injury law firm.
• 41:47
Speaker 7: We need to take a break and movie back right
• 41:49

• 46:40
Speaker 8: And compost the rest.
• 46:42
Speaker 23: Yeah, compost the rest if you don't use it, that's right,

Speaker 6: like have a little bit of everything, and I think
• 47:21
Speaker 6: that's the best kind of dinner.
• 47:22
Speaker 8: So you're just like dipping into this plate.
• 47:24
Speaker 23: Tell me about it exactly if you remember the old
• 47:28
Speaker 23: what was it called the city had the taste of Charleston,
• 47:33
Speaker 23: the taste of Charleston. For we sell tickets ten for
• 47:36

• 47:44
Speaker 23: have fried chicken wings, tons of salmon, cakes, fried fish.

• 47:54

• 49:35
Speaker 23: and so we do draw, but we do draw a
• 49:38
Speaker 23: lot of people for that reason.
• 49:39
