- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Happy Thursday. We almost made it through the
- 0:24week. I'm still on that like minimal
- 0:27heat grind with my hair because I bleach it so much.
- 0:31And I think today you can really tell the hair she's so natural
- 0:39today. All right, let's just get into
- 0:42the stories for today. So I actually kind of have like
- 0:46an industry heavy episode, which is interesting because I know I
- 0:51say this every time, but so many of you guys work in social work
- 0:54in marketing and I know you appreciate these updates.
- 0:57So I wanted to bring something kind of relevant to you guys.
- 1:01OK, so the first thing that I need to talk about is that viral
- 1:05ad for Jaguar cars. So luxury car company Jaguar is
- 1:09going viral after releasing a new ad along with what seems
- 1:13like an entire rebrand. The ad shows a diverse group of
- 1:17people in bright colors against colorful backgrounds.
- 1:21Throughout the ad, there are phrases like create exuberant,
- 1:24live, vivid, delete, ordinary, and copy nothing written over
- 1:29all of the visuals. So if you guys are on LinkedIn
- 1:32or TikTok, you've probably seen at least some discussion about
- 1:36this ad. It is literally going everywhere
- 1:38and it seems to have gone viral because it just feels so off
- 1:42brand. It just seems like it's so such
- 1:45a far stray from Jaguars, like previously established brand
- 1:49identity and like it's an obvious attempt to shake things
- 1:53up, to become more relevant, to step into a new era.
- 1:55But still, it feels like such a far stray that it was kind of
- 1:58shocking to people. I think that being said, it's
- 2:01not really going over very well. I haven't seen a lot of positive
- 2:04commentary and I don't know if those are just my algorithms.
- 2:07So definitely let me know if you guys have seen anything that's
- 2:10been like relatively positive about it.
- 2:12But for the most part, I've seen 2 main criticisms.
- 2:16The first is that it just doesn't make sense for a
- 2:19heritage brands like Jaguar to have this whole rebrand to try
- 2:23and like attract a younger audience base or like a younger
- 2:26consumer base, because that's not really what the car and
- 2:29their brand identity is about, right?
- 2:32But to that, I guess I say, like, what's the point of a
- 2:34rebrand that right? Like, why would rebrands as a
- 2:37concept exist if you could never kind of change what you've
- 2:41always been to appeal to a different demographic?
- 2:43Like that's the point of a rebrand.
- 2:45So I actually don't necessarily agree with that criticism and I
- 2:48definitely don't agree with the second criticism, which is that
- 2:51the ad is to quote UN quote woke.
- 2:54That is what tons of people are saying about this ad.
- 2:57And I think that's just a ridiculous criticism.
- 2:59So Jaguar has gone on to defend the campaign on X, asking
- 3:03viewers for their patience as further updates will be coming
- 3:07soon, apparently December 2nd or early December.
- 3:12I've also seen criticism. People are just like hating on
- 3:14this ad, just like that's actually the gist of this story.
- 3:17But I've also seen criticism around this whole story about
- 3:20when brands trying like drip feed things that are coming
- 3:23soon. And the same thing goes for
- 3:25influencers, right? We hear people talk about this
- 3:28all the time. It's like your audience actually
- 3:29doesn't care when you're like, I have such an exciting project
- 3:32coming up. You guys like at the end of the
- 3:35day, it's actually usually not that exciting for the audience.
- 3:39And I've seen a lot of marketers say the same thing about Jaguar
- 3:42trying to like drip feed this, like coming soon.
- 3:44All will be revealed in December, like that kind of
- 3:48vibe. But with that being said,
- 3:49because of the virality of this ad, I'm going to be waiting for
- 3:52December. Like I want to know what the
- 3:54rebrand is now because it's gone so viral.
- 3:56And on that note, obviously, a lot of people have been saying
- 4:00that the ad has served its purpose because whether you love
- 4:03it or you hate it, and it seems like a lot of people hate it,
- 4:07the level of virality and discourse around the rebrand is
- 4:10successful in and of itself. Right.
- 4:12So Jack Appleby, who is the creator of the very popular
- 4:15newsletter Future Social, made a similar point on his LinkedIn.
- 4:19He wrote, quote, I don't get this Jaguar ad, but it's already
- 4:21more viral than most viral plays.
- 4:24And there is an echelon of virality where so many people
- 4:27see the ad that inevitably boost sales.
- 4:30And hey, I think polarizing an audience is generally a good
- 4:32thing. Give people reason to proudly be
- 4:34with your brand. Yeah, that's clearly what Jaguar
- 4:37is trying to do, a massive shake up and they need it.
- 4:40They've been hurting, so it'll be interesting to see what
- 4:43happens in December. I can't believe that I'm going
- 4:44to be tracking the rebrand of a car company.
- 4:49I just feel so off brand. For me to do a such a massive
- 4:52rebrand that is so different from what they traditionally
- 4:55were, they're going to have to do something so majorly
- 4:57different way beyond just like bright colors and cool
- 5:03progressive slogans and an ad filled with like youthful,
- 5:07creative looking people. You know, they're going to have
- 5:10to do a lot more to establish like this complete rebrand.
- 5:14Otherwise this is going to feel so cheap.
- 5:17But if you guys are marketers and do you have an opinion on
- 5:21this ad or you know, if you've seen discourse on this ad, I
- 5:24would love to know in the comments, like what you think of
- 5:27it, what you've been seeing about it.
- 5:30I literally cannot escape the discourse around this ad.
- 5:33And I think it's so interesting. I mean, I guess it's such a
- 5:36rebrand, but I'm also like, this ad is also just kind of nothing.
- 5:39I don't, I don't know, I think that it's really been blown out
- 5:43of proportion, but here I am talking about it on the podcast.
- 5:46So I guess I'm adding to that. All right.
- 5:49The next story that I have for you guys is I wanted to talk
- 5:52about the new study that came out of Pew Research that found
- 5:56that the majority of news influencers are men.
- 6:00And that's super relevant to me. Even though I don't typically
- 6:02cover hard news, I would say that I cover a subset of news.
- 6:07It might not be the most important news, but I still
- 6:10cover news. So Gen.
- 6:12Zed, as we know, are choosing to get their News Online.
- 6:15And while this is nothing new, little attention has been paid
- 6:18to who is delivering these stories and their biases.
- 6:21According to new data by the Pew Research Center, online news
- 6:25influencers are predominantly men.
- 6:27The analysts reviewed a sample of 500 popular news influencers
- 6:31and examined the content they produced after reviewing over
- 6:3428,000 different social media accounts through this
- 6:37examination, the center found that one in five Americans with
- 6:4137% of adults over 30 regularly get their news from influencers
- 6:46on social media. So obviously this is AUS
- 6:48centered study. I would be interested to see if
- 6:51it differs from you know, I live in Australia, but I'm Canadian
- 6:54like if that would be any different.
- 6:55I honestly, I don't really think so.
- 6:57I think the US is probably fairly representative of, you
- 7:01know, a larger sample here. Quote among Americans who get
- 7:04news from influencers on social media, most 65% say news
- 7:09influencers have helped them better understand current events
- 7:11and civic issues, the report reads.
- 7:14Now, the flip side of that is, like I mentioned, these news
- 7:16influencers don't necessarily reflect gender diversity for all
- 7:20of their audiences. The majority, 62%, are men, with
- 7:24a slightly larger share identifying as conservative 27%
- 7:29compared to liberal 21%. Interestingly, TikTok stands out
- 7:33with a smaller gender gap and more balanced political
- 7:36representation. It's also the only platform
- 7:39where left-leaning creators outnumber their right wing
- 7:42counterparts 28% versus 25%. So Pew doesn't go into detail
- 7:47about why men are overrepresented among news
- 7:50influencers. But Taylor Lorenz discusses a
- 7:53number of factors that she thinks might, you know, have led
- 7:56to that reason. In her sub stack user mag, she
- 8:00writes quote social media platforms have long boosted
- 8:02men's voices over women's. The refusal to tamp down on
- 8:05misogynistic hate and her harassment or provide users with
- 8:09tools to protect themselves has resulted in the silencing of
- 8:12women's voices across the Internet.
- 8:15This dynamic is especially pronounced on platforms like
- 8:18YouTube and Twitter. And I completely I can see that.
- 8:21I can definitely see that I mean, I will talk about
- 8:25something that is like slightly outside of the realm of what I
- 8:28typically cover on this podcast and I will get a lot of feedback
- 8:33about it and it is usually not presented very nicely.
- 8:37So I I can imagine if you are covering hard news where there
- 8:40are just so many heated opinions and just issues on the table, I
- 8:45can imagine that presenting that type of content consistently
- 8:50would be difficult enough. Like you would constantly the
- 8:53feedback that you would be getting would be challenging
- 8:55enough. And as a woman, I imagine it
- 8:57would be like that 10 times. You know, there are just a host
- 9:00of things that women deal with. I mean, we all know this that
- 9:03women deal with online that men don't have to deal with.
- 9:06When we did the Let the Girls game series earlier this year, a
- 9:10lot of the comments that we got were from men, young men that I
- 9:14don't know, like gaming, I guess, and would watch these
- 9:17videos or listen to these episodes and they would just
- 9:19leave the most disgusting comments on those videos.
- 9:22And we've deleted a ton of them because they were just so
- 9:25horrific. Tons that were sexualizing us,
- 9:27like talking about what we looked like, saying, like the
- 9:29most graphic horrific things, like just, yeah, just like
- 9:33really horrible things. And it doesn't need to be that
- 9:36extreme for it to feel like too much and for someone to just
- 9:42decide to leave the Internet. So I think it makes total sense
- 9:45that women like, as Taylor Lorenz said, like the platforms
- 9:48haven't done enough for moderation in general, like,
- 9:51full stop. But especially because there is
- 9:53so much more online harassment and hate directed towards women.
- 9:57And we know that as a fact, as we did explore in the Let the
- 10:00Girls Game episodes with different like experts,
- 10:03researchers, PhD candidates, like people that are like in the
- 10:06weeds and doing the work and online safety.
- 10:08It makes total sense why women would not want to put themselves
- 10:12out there online and share opinions or, you know, talk
- 10:16about topics that are even slightly divisive or
- 10:19controversial. OK, so the last word that I have
- 10:21for you guys is that Coachella has dropped the lineup for 2025
- 10:25and the headliners are Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone and
- 10:30Travis Scott. So quickly, Travis Scott, his
- 10:33name doesn't have like a date attached to it.
- 10:35However, according to Billboard, a press release from Travis
- 10:38Scott's team said that he will perform on the mainstage on
- 10:41Saturday night. Out of the headliners, this will
- 10:44be Lady Gaga's second time headlining Coachella, where Post
- 10:47Malone has performed at the festival but never headlined.
- 10:50Green Day has never performed at the festival.
- 10:53Besides the headliners, other popular acts include Megan the
- 10:56Stallion, Charlie XCX, Tyler, FKA Twigs, Claro, and BLACKPINK
- 11:01members Jenny and Lisa. Lineup has drawn mixed
- 11:04reactions. Some people are saying that the
- 11:06festival has like fallen off because some of these acts feel
- 11:09irrelevant, while others feel like it's really pulling on that
- 11:12nostalgia. I mean, especially with Green
- 11:14Day, I am so I am like 2000's rock girly.
- 11:21Like that is mostly what I listen to was like Linkin Park
- 11:24Blink 182. If you guys used to listen to
- 11:27the podcast when it was Jordy and I like we would always talk
- 11:29about that. She'd be like you listen to like
- 11:32the craziest music, like compared to, you know, like what
- 11:35it seems like I would listen to, but I just listen to like all
- 11:37types of music. But new metal era like that,
- 11:40like 2000s, early 2000s, like that is like my jam.
- 11:42So, you know, Green Day performing is so iconic to me.
- 11:46And I'm like, they are in my Spotify.
- 11:48I think Post Malone makes total sense.
- 11:50He just had that. Did he just have that country
- 11:52album drop? I think he did.
- 11:54Sean, my husband was listening to it and he was like, I love
- 11:58this album. I think that was his latest
- 12:00album, and I think it just came out.
- 12:02But I think it sounds like a really sick lineup.
- 12:04And I mean, Coachella is always iconic, even if the festival has
- 12:07kind of fallen off and we've discussed it on and off over the
- 12:10years. If it's like irrelevant, if it
- 12:13really makes sense for influencers to go.
- 12:15But honestly it has stayed the course.
- 12:17So I'm interested to hear what you guys think of the
- 12:19headliners. I've never been to Coachella and
- 12:21I feel like it's got to be one of those bucket list things, but
- 12:24I would want to do it really well.
- 12:25So I don't think coming from Australia, I could afford to do
- 12:29it well for a very long time. Anyways guys that is it for
- 12:34today. Thank you so much for listening
- 12:36to Mini Scroll. I love you guys.
