- 2:49Speaker 2: In the time it takes to look through a lens
- 2:52Speaker 2: and shine a light, your eye, doctor can inspect your arteries,
- 2:56Speaker 2: your veins, and your nerves, the only place in the
- 2:59Speaker 2: human body were all three. You're visible without a single incision.
- 3:04Speaker 2: What's happening in your eyes indicate issues with other parts
- 3:07Speaker 2: of your body high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, autoimmune disease,
- 3:12Speaker 2: diroid problems, even sexually transmitted diseases. The eye, as often
- 3:17Speaker 2: as we hear, is the window to the soul, but
- 3:21Speaker 2: many doctors will say it's the window to our health.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Says doctor Joseph Allen, optometrist, founder of Doctor Eye Health.
- 3:29Speaker 2: The eye body connection is most apparent in the retina,
- 3:33Speaker 2: an extension of the brain.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Don't forget that nerves by two.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Distinct blood supplies the retin is one of the most
- 3:39Speaker 2: metabolically active tissues in the body. Blood, vessels, and nerves
- 3:44Speaker 2: are visible through your retina, which is why eye exams
- 3:47Speaker 2: can help detect signs of certain health conditions. In particular,
- 3:51Speaker 2: dilated eye exams gives a panoramic view of the retina.
- 3:56Speaker 2: For example, your eye doctor can observe high pretension in
- 3:59Speaker 2: real time. With high blood pressure. There are changes that
- 4:02Speaker 2: occur in the vascular that we're not seeing happen because
- 4:06Speaker 2: we see the bare arteries in the veins in the eyes.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We can't see that.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Doctor Andrew Iwalk, ophthalmologist and executive director of the glau
- 4:15Speaker 2: Coma Center of Frisco. What your doctor might observe is
- 4:18Speaker 2: narrowing of the retinal arteries, thickening of the vessel walls,
- 4:22Speaker 2: retinal bleeding reduce blood flow, and in severe cases, swelling
- 4:26Speaker 2: of the optic nerve. The condition is called hypertensive retinopathy.
- 4:31Speaker 2: But the findings don't just affect the eyes. How these
- 4:36Speaker 2: work operate is a clue to how your body wide
- 4:39Speaker 2: vessels are performing. Symptoms in the retina mean you are
- 4:42Speaker 2: at a risk of a stroke, cart disease, or kidney disease.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Besides looking in your eyes to observe the retina. The
- 4:48Speaker 2: doctors often use the fundus photography, which captures high resolution
- 4:52Speaker 2: images at the back of your eye, including the retina,
- 4:55Speaker 2: optic nerve, and macula. In the future, fundas photography could
- 4:59Speaker 2: be used by non ophthalmologists as a screening tool for
- 5:03Speaker 2: systemic disease. Doctors can observe swelling in the optic nerve,
- 5:07Speaker 2: which is caused by intracranial pressure resulting from conditions.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Such as brain bleed, brain tumors.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Low sodium levels, or a buildup of toxins in your
- 5:15Speaker 2: blood from decreased kidney function. How the eyes follow a
- 5:19Speaker 2: moving object, perceive depth and focus can also offer abundant information.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Doctor Bryce Applebomb and optometrist, said that eye tracking can
- 5:29Speaker 2: assess how well somebody pays attention and possesses what they see,
- 5:34Speaker 2: which may aid in diagnosing neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
- 5:39Speaker 2: A great degree of ophthalmology training is aimed at the
- 5:42Speaker 2: interactions among the eye, brain, and the rest.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Of the body.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Good news for people who haven't seen their primary doctor
- 5:48Speaker 2: in years but never skip an annual eye exam. In
- 5:52Speaker 2: many cases, eye doctor observations. Eye tests in your health
- 5:55Speaker 2: history can indicate problems beyond your eyes. For many people,
- 5:59Speaker 2: in eye exam is where diabetes is first identified. The
- 6:03Speaker 2: organization the American Optumo Optometric Association reported that eye doctors
- 6:10Speaker 2: were the first to identify more than three hundred one
- 6:13Speaker 2: thousand patients who had diabetes related eye manifestations and didn't
- 6:17Speaker 2: know they were pre diabetic or diabetic. Fluctuating glucose levels
- 6:21Speaker 2: can change the curve in the shape of the lens,
- 6:23Speaker 2: causing blurred vision to persist until blood sugar stabilizes.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Left unmanaged, high.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Blood sugar causes fluids to leak, vessels to swell and
- 6:34Speaker 2: abnormal new vessels to form in the eye, which can
- 6:36Speaker 2: cause damage.
- 6:37Speaker 1: That leads to vision loss and blindness.
- 6:41Speaker 2: There are two hundred and seventy three diseases with signs
- 6:43Speaker 2: that can appear during an eye exam, including autoimmune and
- 6:47Speaker 2: thyroid disease. Eye doctors can sometimes identify signs of thyroid
- 6:51Speaker 2: eye disease. A slit layup examination can reveal eye change
- 6:56Speaker 2: is associated with certain sexually transmitted infections. Often problems are
- 7:01Speaker 2: detected by chance during a regular eye exam, rather than
- 7:06Speaker 2: due to visual or other symptoms. That was the case
- 7:09Speaker 2: for Ethan, a mom who recently agreed to fund his photography,
- 7:12Speaker 2: during a checkup a decade ago. We've all been allowsy
- 7:18Speaker 2: vision in our family, but there was nothing I was
- 7:20Speaker 2: concerned about at the age of fourteen. Didn't think I
- 7:25Speaker 2: needed to do that, said Jenny Starkey. The test showed
- 7:28Speaker 2: Ethan's optic nerve was swollen, and it was diagnosed with
- 7:31Speaker 2: a pseudo tumor, a non cancerous condition that can be dangerous.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It explained the headaches he'd been having, but he dismissed
- 7:43Speaker 2: because the whole family has history of migraines. Starkey said.
- 7:46Speaker 2: After treatment, Ethan's pressure resolved. We got lucky and it
- 7:50Speaker 2: wasn't a big issue. Starkey said Ethan's situation illustrates the
- 7:54Speaker 2: importance of regular eye exams. According to American Academy of Ophthalmology,
- 7:59Speaker 2: those who have vision problems should see an optometrist or
- 8:01Speaker 2: an ophthalmologist at least once a year. Children should see
- 8:06Speaker 2: you should see an optometrist.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Or ophthalmologists if they fail as screening.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Children should be screened at six months between the ages
- 8:14Speaker 2: of three and five before starting school. There's just so
- 8:18Speaker 2: much more division than just seeing in sight.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I apologize for the cough. That's what I'm dealing with. Well,
