- 0:37say welcome.
- 0:37If you've been here one time, five times,
- 0:4010, 100, or maybe even more, I'd like
- 0:43to say thank you and welcome, but I'd
- 0:45also like to say those words, welcome back,
- 0:48because it feels really great to be with
- 0:51all of you guys today.
- 0:54Thank you so much for choosing my content
- 0:56and being part of this.
- 0:57I really do appreciate it, and I hope
- 0:59you're learning lots of great stuff, so really
- 1:03great to have you here with me.
- 1:05So without any further ado, guys, let's get
- 1:07into this show.
- 1:07This has been a very powerful week.
- 1:09Well, every episode is very powerful.
- 1:11Don't forget to grab a snack or some
- 1:13RO water like I have, and I have
- 1:17a protein bar here, which is actually pretty
- 1:18good.
- 1:27Okay, welcome everyone to another powerful episode of
- 1:36Inspirations for Your Life, and I'm John C.
- 1:39Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:47podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner,
- 1:50graduate student at Montgomery State University, and so
- 1:52grateful now to be a published author.
- 1:55Our weekly master topic is important, and it
- 2:02is your creativity isn't gone.
- 2:04You just stopped using it.
- 2:08I think that's something a lot of people
- 2:09miss.
- 2:10They don't realize that their creativity isn't gone.
- 2:14They just don't know how to access it
- 2:15or harness it.
- 2:16So today, I'm talking about something that can
- 2:22quietly destroy your creativity, okay?
- 2:27And what is it?
- 2:29It's comparison.
- 2:31You see somebody else's work, audience, success, style,
- 2:35or ideas, and suddenly what you were creating
- 2:38doesn't seem good enough anymore.
- 2:40So I think that's a problem for a
- 2:44lot of people.
- 2:45They get stuck in this mode, and they
- 2:49don't really know how to get out of
- 2:51this mode, but all they know is they're
- 2:52stuck, and they're like, well, what do I
- 2:53do now?
- 2:54Now what am I supposed to do?
- 2:55I think that becomes hard for a lot
- 2:58of people.
- 3:00So our granular topic for today is comparison
- 3:03is killing what makes your original.
- 3:05Series 5, show 39, episode number 5.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10So you start changing it.
- 3:12Eventually, you may remove the very thing that
- 3:16made it yours, that made you unique.
- 3:19I think that's an important thing.
- 3:21There's nothing wrong, guys, with being inspired by
- 3:23great work.
- 3:25Inspiration can show you what's possible.
- 3:27The problem begins when you're learning from somebody
- 3:31who turns into trying to become them.
- 3:35Yeah.
- 3:37Number two, guys, learn from others without becoming
- 3:43them.
- 3:44Study what works.
- 3:46Learn techniques, principles, and strategies.
- 3:51But bring those lessons back through your own
- 3:54experiences and personality.
- 3:57Growth shouldn't require losing yourself.
- 3:59I think that's an important thing, guys.
- 4:01Number three, stop measuring your beginning against your
- 4:05experience.
- 4:09That's a good one.
- 4:11You may be looking at someone's 10th year
- 4:15while judging your 10th week.
- 4:19You don't know every failure, revision, and mistake
- 4:23that happened before the result.
- 4:26You're comparing yourself against someone else because of,
- 4:30well, your own cynicism, pretty much.
- 4:35Number four, comparison can make good ideas feel
- 4:40inadequate.
- 4:42An idea you love five minutes ago can
- 4:46suddenly seem terrible after seeing somebody else's.
- 4:50Their work didn't necessarily make yours worse.
- 4:53Comparison changed how you were looking at it.
- 4:56Number five, your voice develops by using it.
- 5:00You don't discover your voice by waiting until
- 5:03you're certain what it is.
- 5:05You develop it by creating, experimenting, communicating, and
- 5:09noticing what consistently feels authentic to you.
- 5:15When we think about authentic, authentic is something
- 5:17that's unique, right?
- 5:20Something that's not copied.
- 5:22We think about authentic a lot of times
- 5:23when we talk about things like Gucci, Louis
- 5:25Vuitton, and other famous designers.
- 5:29Is it authentic or is it a knockoff,
- 5:31right?
- 5:31Is it a copy?
- 5:32It's not really the authentic.
- 5:34Number six, stop trying to sound like everybody
- 5:38you admire.
- 5:39Admiration can become imitation without us realizing it.
- 5:44Learn from people you respect, but don't borrow
- 5:50their entire identity.
- 5:53Your goal isn't to become another version of
- 5:59them, okay?
- 6:03I think sometimes people get lost with that
- 6:05because they're like, well, you know, I can
- 6:07do this.
- 6:08I can do that.
- 6:08But then they're like wondering why something's not
- 6:12making sense or why we're not getting where
- 6:15we need to be, right?
- 6:21That's hard for a lot of people, right?
- 6:24Very, very hard.
- 6:30And I think sometimes people just don't get
- 6:35it.
- 6:35They don't understand, but they sabotage their own
- 6:40efforts.
- 6:42And that depresses some people.
- 6:45Number seven, borrow principles, not personalities.
- 6:51Learn why something works.
- 6:54Maybe it's consistency.
- 6:56Is it storytelling?
- 6:57Is it discipline?
- 6:57Is it simplicity or preparation?
- 7:00Take the principle and apply it in a
- 7:04way that still sounds and feels like you.
- 7:08Number eight, your differences are creative assets.
- 7:13The things that make you different aren't automatically
- 7:16weaknesses.
- 7:17Your background, your interests, your skills, experiences, and
- 7:22way of thinking can create combinations nobody else
- 7:25has, right?
- 7:28I think that's an important piece.
- 7:30Number nine, don't remove what makes your work
- 7:33recognizable.
- 7:35If you keep sanding away every unusual edge
- 7:38because somebody might not like it, eventually your
- 7:41work can become so safe that nobody knows
- 7:45it's yours.
- 7:47You've removed everything that basically traces it back
- 7:51to you.
- 7:52And the idea is no longer your idea
- 7:55anymore because you removed everything that made it
- 7:58you, original.
- 8:00Number 10, originality doesn't mean inventing everything from
- 8:05nothing.
- 8:06Almost every creator has influences.
- 8:09Originality often comes from what you combine, how
- 8:12you interpret it, and what you contribute from
- 8:14your own experience in your life.
- 8:16Number 11, creativity often comes from your unique
- 8:20combination of influence.
- 8:22You may be influenced by technology, businesses, music,
- 8:29education, conversations, books, travel, or something completely unrelated.
- 8:36Your combination can create something distinctive.
- 8:42I think that's an interesting thing to ponder.
- 8:46Number 12, your experiences change what you create.
- 8:51They alter your perspectives.
- 8:54Two people can receive the same assignment and
- 8:56produce completely different results because they're bringing different
- 9:00lives into the process.
- 9:05Your experiences matter.
- 9:10Nobody has your exact perspective.
- 9:12Number 13, someone may share your profession or
- 9:17interests, but nobody has experienced everything exactly as
- 9:21you have.
- 9:23That's why your perspective has a creative value,
- 9:27different than everybody else.
- 9:30So many people I know try to be
- 9:32like the other person.
- 9:33It's okay to learn from them, but then
- 9:36you got to put your own spin on
- 9:37it, your own style, right?
- 9:39Nobody has your exact perspective.
- 9:43Someone may share your profession or interests, but
- 9:46nobody has experienced everything exactly as you have.
- 9:49That's why your perspective has creative value.
- 9:53Number 14, stop chasing somebody else's audience.
- 9:57Not everybody needs to like what you create.
- 10:00If you constantly reshape your work to create
- 10:02somebody else's audience, you may lose the people
- 10:05who would connect with you.
- 10:08Number 15, create for the people who connect
- 10:12with your voice.
- 10:13You don't need universal approval.
- 10:16Focus on creating something genuine enough that the
- 10:18right people recognize themselves.
- 10:20Learn something or feel a connection.
- 10:24Trends can inspire you without controlling you.
- 10:29Trends can teach you what's attracting attention.
- 10:34But don't let every trend rewrite your identity.
- 10:38Use what fits, leave what doesn't.
- 10:42Number 17, don't abandon an idea because someone
- 10:46else did something similar.
- 10:48You still could be different.
- 10:51Someone else covering a topic doesn't mean your
- 10:53contribution has no value.
- 10:56Ask what your experience, explanation, perspective, or approach
- 11:00can add.
- 11:05That's key.
- 11:07Do you do that or do you just
- 11:08do anything and hope it works?
- 11:11Number 18, ask what only you can bring
- 11:14to it.
- 11:16This is one of the strongest creative questions
- 11:19you can ask.
- 11:20What experience, story, skill, personality, or perspective can
- 11:26you contribute that makes your version different?
- 11:32Makes it different.
- 11:33Number 19, your interpretation matters.
- 11:36Two people can look at the same problem
- 11:39and see different possibilities.
- 11:40Creativity isn't only about the subject, guys.
- 11:43It's also about what you notice and what
- 11:46you do with it, what you do with
- 11:49it.
- 11:52The way people apply their own thinking and
- 11:57their own rationale can dramatically affect whether something
- 12:00is successful or not.
- 12:01And that happens just because of pivot, just
- 12:04because of a shift, right?
- 12:06Your interpretation matters, right?
- 12:10And two people can look at the same
- 12:11problem and see different possibilities.
- 12:14Creativity isn't only about the subject.
- 12:15It's also about what you notice and what
- 12:17you do with it.
- 12:20Number 20, stop changing your work every time
- 12:23you see somebody else's.
- 12:25If you constantly redirect yourself based on what
- 12:30someone else posts, launches, or creates, you'll never
- 12:34give your own work enough time to develop.
- 12:40That's truth.
- 12:42Many people here don't want to hear that.
- 12:44They don't want to hear the truth.
- 12:48They just want to know that they could
- 12:50do whatever they want and they can move
- 12:51forward.
- 12:51But that's not going to help anybody grow,
- 12:55right?
- 12:55It's not going to help anybody grow.
- 12:58I think that's probably the hardest thing that
- 13:00I can tell any of you.
- 13:05Number 21, develop your ideas.
- 13:11The time to develop your own identity is
- 13:14also important.
- 13:16You can't rush it.
- 13:18You shouldn't be photocopying someone else's identity.
- 13:21It's okay to get some ideas from what
- 13:23they do, but you don't want to become
- 13:25that person.
- 13:27You're a different person.
- 13:29Everyone's unique.
- 13:32And I don't want to create the way
- 13:35another creator creates.
- 13:35I want to create the way John creates.
- 13:38I've had some videos going out recently and
- 13:40they had 8,000, 10,000 views.
- 13:42Why?
- 13:43Because it was me.
- 13:44Because it was my style.
- 13:47Early work may be influenced heavily by what
- 13:50you learn from others.
- 13:52Keep creating anyway.
- 13:54Over time, your preferences and instincts can become
- 13:59clearer, okay?
- 14:02Clearer than what they were.
- 14:03Number 22, comparison interrupts creative momentum.
- 14:10But why do people do that?
- 14:12They get scared.
- 14:14They figure, oh, it's not going to work,
- 14:15so I've got to do something else.
- 14:18I think that's probably one of the most
- 14:19important things, right?
- 14:22That's probably one of the most important things
- 14:24that I can tell you.
- 14:25But people don't want to hear this stuff.
- 14:28You could be making great progress until you
- 14:30stop to measure yourself against someone else.
- 14:34Suddenly, you're questioning everything.
- 14:37Protect momentum by returning your attention to your
- 14:41work.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:46Attention, awareness, big keys to success, guys.
- 14:53Number 23, protect unfinished ideas from unnecessary opinions.
- 14:58An unfinished idea can be fragile.
- 15:01You don't need 10 opinions before you understand
- 15:05what you're trying to create.
- 15:07Give some ideas room before opening them to
- 15:11everybody else.
- 15:12That's the biggest thing I can tell you.
- 15:15Number 24, not everyone needs to understand what
- 15:19you're building.
- 15:21They don't have to understand.
- 15:22Some people won't understand your idea, especially in
- 15:27the beginning.
- 15:28Listen carefully to useful concerns.
- 15:31But don't you dare assume confusion automatically means
- 15:36you should quit.
- 15:37I know a lot of people that they
- 15:39say, you know what?
- 15:39I've had enough.
- 15:40I want to quit.
- 15:42And they're just getting started, right?
- 15:47They are just getting started.
- 15:52I think that's a hard thing for a
- 15:56lot of people to realize.
- 16:01That it's about getting started.
- 16:04And sometimes when we get started, guys, it's
- 16:06not the easiest way.
- 16:10It's not the easiest way.
- 16:11And that's just the truth.
- 16:13That's no smoke.
- 16:14That's no mirrors.
- 16:15That's just the truth.
- 16:17So if you're doing something and it's not
- 16:19working properly, what do you do?
- 16:22You don't quit.
- 16:23You say, well, gee, how can I do
- 16:24this another way?
- 16:26You know, what would it look like when
- 16:28I'm successful?
- 16:29What would it feel like?
- 16:31Where would I be?
- 16:33How would I breathe?
- 16:34How would I hold my head?
- 16:35How would I walk?
- 16:37How would I talk?
- 16:39I'd be different.
- 16:42So your own individuality, your own creativity will
- 16:47usually attract people towards you.
- 16:51They're curious about you.
- 16:52They want to learn what makes you tick.
- 16:55They want to learn like what fires you
- 17:00up.
- 17:01Not everybody.
- 17:04And you can share that knowledge with them
- 17:08and they can apply it to their lives,
- 17:13tell their friends, their family, their colleagues.
- 17:17Right?
- 17:19Number 25, feedback should improve your work, not
- 17:24erase you from it.
- 17:28John, that's good.
- 17:29But what do you mean by that?
- 17:30It's really simple.
- 17:35Good feedback can make your work stronger.
- 17:38But if every suggestion removes another piece of
- 17:41your personality, eventually the thinnest product, they belong
- 17:46to everybody except you.
- 17:52Everybody except you.
- 17:56That's important, guys.
- 18:00Very important to know that.
- 18:04Number 26, know which advice belongs to you.
- 18:10Not all advice is wrong, but not all
- 18:13advice is right for your direction.
- 18:15Listen, evaluate, and decide whether the advice actually
- 18:19serves what you're trying to create.
- 18:24If it doesn't, come up with something else.
- 18:30A lot of people are afraid to go
- 18:32back to the drawing board.
- 18:33This is what I've noticed.
- 18:36And that's a very, very big problem, right?
- 18:43That's a very, very big problem that I
- 18:45think a lot of people, they miss it.
- 18:48They don't understand why.
- 18:51And that miss is a problem for somebody.
- 18:54Like, well, how come this is this way?
- 18:56Or how come I'm doing this?
- 18:58Be open to new possibilities.
- 19:02Number 27, trust your creative instinct enough to
- 19:07test them.
- 19:08You don't have to blindly believe every instinct.
- 19:12Test it.
- 19:13Try the idea.
- 19:15Create a version.
- 19:16See what happens.
- 19:18Give your instincts a chance to produce evidence
- 19:21for you.
- 19:23I think when you do that, you're going
- 19:25to suddenly see, wait a minute.
- 19:27You know what?
- 19:28I'm actually good at what I do.
- 19:30Just believe in yourself for a little bit.
- 19:33Many people I know, they give up right
- 19:35away.
- 19:43And this happens because people get overanxious.
- 19:47I mean, that's the real reason.
- 19:55And that allows you to say, you know,
- 19:58this is where I am in my life
- 20:00right now.
- 20:00How do I change this?
- 20:02You can.
- 20:03Absolutely, you can change it.
- 20:05Number 28, your originality grows when you stop
- 20:09performing for comparison.
- 20:12When you're constantly asking how you measure up,
- 20:15you're creating with somebody else's scoreboard in your
- 20:19head.
- 20:20Put it down and concentrate on making your
- 20:23work better than it was yesterday.
- 20:27Number 29, make something that actually sounds like
- 20:31you.
- 20:35Your work should eventually carry something recognizable from
- 20:39you.
- 20:41Potentially your humor, your values, curiosity, experiences, questions,
- 20:47or maybe just your style, the persona you
- 20:51are.
- 20:54And you should have room to show up
- 20:57as you.
- 20:58You don't need to show up as someone
- 20:59else.
- 21:01Too many people in life say, you know
- 21:02what?
- 21:03This isn't working for me.
- 21:04I got to become that person.
- 21:05You don't need to become that person.
- 21:06You don't need to become that social media
- 21:08expert.
- 21:09You can learn some things, but you can't
- 21:11always.
- 21:24That's important.
- 21:28It's important to know that some people get
- 21:34lost.
- 21:38They feel that they're inadequate.
- 21:42So they give up.
- 21:47They give up.
- 21:56They give up.
- 22:00And then they realize that they're not any
- 22:03better than they were.
- 22:11They're not any better than they were.
- 22:12And that gets people discouraged.
- 22:17Number 30, the world doesn't need another copy
- 22:20when it hasn't seen your own version.
- 22:22Why don't you show the world who you
- 22:24are, not of someone else's?
- 22:27That's what I want you to remember today.
- 22:31The world already has the person you're comparing
- 22:35yourself with.
- 22:36It already has their voice, their creativity, their
- 22:40perspective, their style, their experience, their humor, their
- 22:47approach, their perspectives.
- 22:55What it doesn't have, though, is your exact
- 22:58combination of those things.
- 23:01Comparison can be useful when it teaches you.
- 23:03It becomes destructive when it convinces you that
- 23:06becoming more like somebody else is the only
- 23:09way to become better.
- 23:11Learn from other people.
- 23:13Great doing that.
- 23:14Study excellent work.
- 23:15Accept useful feedback.
- 23:17Pay attention to trends.
- 23:18But don't surrender your identity in the progress.
- 23:21Your creativity is too valuable.
- 23:23It needs enough freedom to become recognizable as
- 23:27yours.
- 23:28Maybe your version won't appeal to everybody.
- 23:30That's okay.
- 23:32Maybe somebody else is further ahead.
- 23:35It's okay.
- 23:36Keep going.
- 23:37Maybe your work still needs improvement.
- 23:39It's okay.
- 23:40Improve it.
- 23:41But don't confuse improvement with imitation.
- 23:45You can become better without becoming somebody else.
- 23:49And remember our weekly master topic.
- 23:52Your creativity isn't gone.
- 23:55You stopped using it.
- 23:58Part of using your creativity, again, is trusting
- 24:01that your perspective deserves an opportunity to develop.
- 24:07So stop checking whether your work looks like
- 24:10theirs.
- 24:12Ask whether it looks, sounds, and feels increasingly
- 24:16like you.
- 24:18Because you see, your differences aren't obstacles to
- 24:21originality.
- 24:22They're part of where originality comes from.
- 24:25The world doesn't need another copy.
- 24:28And it hasn't seen your unique and very
- 24:32special version.
- 24:34I think those are the things that most
- 24:36people in life forget.
- 24:39You know what?
- 24:39Joe's doing it like this.
- 24:40Mary's doing it like this.
- 24:41They're amazing.
- 24:42They're awesome.
- 24:47They've been doing it for longer than you
- 24:48have.
- 24:50You haven't seen the mistakes they made, but
- 24:52they made mistakes too.
- 24:54Okay.
- 24:55Show the world your originality.
- 24:59That's what you need to do.
- 25:01As I said, the world doesn't need another
- 25:03copy of someone else.
- 25:06We don't need that.
- 25:08You know what gets traffic in social media?
- 25:11When you become your authentic self.
- 25:16Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who
- 25:17I am by now, I'm John C.
- 25:19Morley.
- 25:19I'm a serial entrepreneur, graduate student at Montgomery
- 25:22State University, and so much more.
- 25:24And this has been another powerful episode of
- 25:27Inspirations for Your Life.
- 25:30I thank you so much for choosing to
- 25:32spend this precious time with me today.
- 25:35And I know as a lot of you
- 25:37are pondering and wondering, how do I show
- 25:42up as me?
- 25:45Well, I think a lot of people that
- 25:47get stuck there are stuck because they're trying
- 25:49to perfect themselves.
- 25:51Just show up as you.
- 25:53You know, if it's a little messy, a
- 25:54little rough, that's fine.
- 25:56But just show up as you.
- 25:59You'll find your way.
- 26:00You'll see what you need to adapt to.
- 26:02It's not going to happen overnight, guys.
- 26:06But you will slowly find your own way.
- 26:11And as you do, your life will change
- 26:14because your perspectives will change.
- 26:20Your vision will change.
- 26:23When that changes, your outcome changes.
- 26:28When your outcome changes, guess what happens, ladies
- 26:30and gentlemen?
- 26:31Your life changes and it gets really good.
- 26:35But too many people say, oh, I hit
- 26:36a wall.
- 26:38I can't go any further.
- 26:42How committed are you to achieving your desires,
- 26:46your goals?
- 26:49It is something you're going to do because
- 26:51it's convenient now.
- 26:53But when it becomes inconvenient, you say, oh,
- 26:56you know what?
- 26:57I'm too busy.
- 26:58I know a lot of people that give
- 26:59up when it gets hard or it gets
- 27:02uncomfortable.
- 27:03I've said it before, life successes do not
- 27:06happen in the comfortable zone.
- 27:11They just don't.
- 27:12They never will.
- 27:15I didn't say painful.
- 27:16I said uncomfortable.
- 27:18There's a huge difference pushing ourself just a
- 27:23little bit further.
- 27:25So as I get ready to wind up
- 27:28the show today, I want to ask you
- 27:31all to commit to keep learning from others,
- 27:35to keep developing your powerful voice, to keep
- 27:39creating and never let comparison erase what makes
- 27:44your work yours and so very special.
- 27:51Your individuality is waiting to burst out and
- 27:56shine.
- 27:58Let it, guys.

- 28:00amazing, of course, inspiring creations.
