- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm Brandon Kravitz, your hosts, joined by the Prime Minister
- 0:32Speaker 1: of DJEN Nation Stuckey and the Queen of the Pod,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Miss Kendra Middleton.

- 0:40Speaker 1: Team USA continues on in men's hockey and kenjar We
- 0:45Speaker 1: got a big one today with the women taking on Canada.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So your world of international hockey is on full display
- 0:53Speaker 1: and we're peaking right now.
- 0:55Speaker 2: My parlay is still alive.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I was sweating so hard into overtime yesterday, but Quinn
- 1:01Speaker 3: Hughes on the ice for like three and a half
- 1:04Speaker 3: minutes scores the game winner. Wasn't seeing ghosts on that one.
- 1:07Speaker 2: What a king.
- 1:10Speaker 1: My producer in Orlando for my weekday show just turned
- 1:14Speaker 1: twenty one, so he's now able to bet legally and
- 1:18Speaker 1: his first bet placed was a three leg hockey parlay.
- 1:23Speaker 2: That was not gender specific. We went.
- 1:28Speaker 1: We went women on one side and then the USA
- 1:32Speaker 1: men on the other, and that is his first dive
- 1:36Speaker 1: into sports betting and.
- 1:37Speaker 2: His parlay is still alive.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I told him he should probably hover his finger over
- 1:42Speaker 1: the app and just delete it, but we'll see if
- 1:45Speaker 1: he can come through on that.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Stucky. How you feeling as the week progresses?
- 1:51Speaker 4: A good, Just getting ready for college hoops weekend, going
- 1:56Speaker 4: through the card, then starting to do some conference tournament work.
- 2:02Speaker 4: We had our first last night. We had our first
- 2:07Speaker 4: conference champion, regular season conference champion, which was Navy, believe
- 2:13Speaker 4: it or not, maybe clinched their first outright Patriot League title.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Will be the one seed in a tournament, but trying
- 2:20Speaker 4: to look for some long shots, and we'll have previews
- 2:24Speaker 4: up on Big Bets on Campus podcast for every single
- 2:28Speaker 4: conference tournament. So yeah, March is gonna be here in
- 2:33Speaker 4: less than ten days. I think we just have yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 4: ten days left of February, so we'll be real quick.
- 2:39Speaker 5: So just grinding along.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we are in a leap yer right, so next
- 2:47Speaker 1: year I think next year's the leapier well anyway, but
- 2:51Speaker 1: the fewer days the better to get to March and
- 2:54Speaker 1: the madness that comes with it all for that the
- 2:57Speaker 1: NBA All Star Break is over and done with. I
- 3:00Speaker 1: finally get my precious NBA back on the screen. Tonight
- 3:03Speaker 1: will be a late one for me. I'm working Magic
- 3:05Speaker 1: Kings tonight and that starts at ten pm on the
- 3:07Speaker 1: East Coast.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Say a prayer for me.
- 3:11Speaker 1: The two worst teams against the spread in the NBA,
- 3:14Speaker 1: by the way, are the Magic and the King.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So tread lightly with that one.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Stuck you want to grease the wheels for us with
- 3:20Speaker 1: your random question of the week.
- 3:22Speaker 6: Hey, this is a dumb question.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Let me ask you a personal question kind of question?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Is that is question?
- 3:31Speaker 7: All right?
- 3:31Speaker 4: So I'll go first. I'll give you the guy's hort
- 3:33Speaker 4: to think about it. Just keep it simple. What is
- 3:37Speaker 4: what are your fears? Do you have any phobias? So
- 3:42Speaker 4: my I have. I guess I'll say I have like four.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I was trying to think about this. I'm not really
- 3:49Speaker 4: like an anxious person. I don't have like the normal phobias,
- 3:54Speaker 4: Like I'm not afraid of heights or or spiders or
- 3:58Speaker 4: things like that.
- 3:59Speaker 5: My main one is.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Triple phobia and that do you know what that is?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's like fear of holes, Like if you are.
- 4:18Speaker 4: If you at this like picture right here, like like
- 4:22Speaker 4: a load of it's.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Not even like falling into holes.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Just it's like looking at like whole like lots of
- 4:27Speaker 3: holes on like surfaces.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Yeah, or like on skin especially, but does the moon
- 4:33Speaker 4: count or does the or does go through the hole.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Like this thing?
- 4:40Speaker 4: It makes me like, it makes me like God, just
- 4:44Speaker 4: google Google image. Go to Google image, type in t.
- 4:47Speaker 7: R y uh.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Uh that I knew what this was, t R y.
- 4:53Speaker 4: P o phobia, and then just go to images and
- 4:56Speaker 4: then see if that like triggers.
- 4:59Speaker 5: You all, then you have that Oh God, I just
- 5:01Speaker 5: saw that on some girl's face.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Like there's bad ones that like they'll just put like
- 5:08Speaker 4: a lotus pot on like a girl's face or something,
- 5:10Speaker 4: and it makes me, it makes my skin. Girl, that
- 5:12Speaker 4: one I've I don't know what the origin of that
- 5:16Speaker 4: or the evolutionary response is, but that one is that
- 5:21Speaker 4: one I've always had my others. I guess I would
- 5:25Speaker 4: say I now have a fear of hot air balloons
- 5:29Speaker 4: because I went up in one in Spain this summer
- 5:32Speaker 4: and I got the call of the void where like
- 5:36Speaker 4: I wanted to jump and I had to like back
- 5:42Speaker 4: up from the ledge because I kept being like, what
- 5:45Speaker 4: if I jumped, I should jump, and so like I
- 5:47Speaker 4: don't want that.
- 5:48Speaker 5: I don't I don't want to have that feeling again.
- 5:51Speaker 4: And this might be common, but hospital, if I think
- 5:56Speaker 4: it's called something.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Fear of hospitals, I gets the only.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Time I get like anxious and I could be there
- 6:05Speaker 4: for nothing, and I don't know, I feel like that's
- 6:07Speaker 4: that's a pretty common one. But I get like I've
- 6:09Speaker 4: gotten like highs before and I get really nervous and anxious.
- 6:12Speaker 5: I can't be there for a while.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I stucky started this by saying, I'm not a very
- 6:17Speaker 1: anxious person. Here are my four fears.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm trying to really think of like
- 6:22Speaker 4: specific ones. And then I think my most the most
- 6:26Speaker 4: thing I worry about is house being robbed. And that's
- 6:31Speaker 4: so like when I'm away, I'm always checking my cameras.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And that's because I mean, I told you guys the
- 6:36Speaker 4: story when I was like home alone, I was sixteen,
- 6:39Speaker 4: and I someone was watching my house and I thought
- 6:44Speaker 4: someone was watching me for hours and then I went upstairs,
- 6:47Speaker 4: turned the lights off late and bed and then my
- 6:49Speaker 4: alarm went off and window broke and someone was trying
- 6:51Speaker 4: to break in. And I don't know if I told
- 6:53Speaker 4: you guys this, but uh, I was pulling all night
- 6:57Speaker 4: er prepping for college basketball.
- 6:59Speaker 5: This was a February or January, and it was.
- 7:04Speaker 4: So it was like, this is I think four or
- 7:07Speaker 4: five years ago, and this is when I still smoked cigarettes.
- 7:11Speaker 4: And I put my jacket on and then I was
- 7:16Speaker 4: going out. I have a cigarette and put my trash out.
- 7:18Speaker 4: It was four thirty in the morning and it was
- 7:22Speaker 4: so cold. I put this like big winter jacket with
- 7:25Speaker 4: like this big hood and I opened my door, stepped out.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I had a trash bag in my hand, lit a cigarette,
- 7:37Speaker 4: looked up and there's two guys with masks standing right
- 7:45Speaker 4: in front of me, and I looked at I froze completely.
- 7:51Speaker 4: They looked at me, they looked at each other, and
- 7:53Speaker 4: then took off ran I have a video.
- 7:55Speaker 5: I'll show you that.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I'll send you the video, and then I just started
- 7:58Speaker 4: taking a video. They ran, jumped over the fence that
- 8:03Speaker 4: separates my O my neighbor's house stuff.
- 8:05Speaker 2: They said, fuck that, I'm out.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Well there like huge quoto on just came out and
- 8:10Speaker 4: then just they were probably like they weren't no chance
- 8:13Speaker 4: were they expecting to see me. I think that they
- 8:17Speaker 4: were just trying to grab cars or something. But that
- 8:21Speaker 4: freaked me out for a while, So I guess that's
- 8:27Speaker 4: like what I worry about most. That's irrational. But so
- 8:32Speaker 4: my main main fear, my main phobia is that tripophobia,
- 8:35Speaker 4: which is the whole thing.
- 8:36Speaker 1: So it used to be betting on the Titans, but
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think you got over that.
- 8:39Speaker 2: So it's good to work through your ship. You know.
- 8:42Speaker 4: My new fear now is that vetting against my Ohio.
- 8:45Speaker 4: We'll talk about that later, because they just don't beat me. Kendrick,
- 8:48Speaker 4: do you have any phobias?
- 8:50Speaker 3: I have a list in my phone, a continuously like
- 8:54Speaker 3: run list. There's like twelve things on here, so I'm
- 8:56Speaker 3: just gonna read them and you can react. I'm not
- 8:59Speaker 3: gonna make any comment. It's because some of them are insane. Monkeys, fingernails,
- 9:03Speaker 3: popsicle sticks, goats but only sometimes, octopus, hotel room, carpet ticks,
- 9:09Speaker 3: metal straws, unwashed lemons, birth maray eels, cat in the hat,
- 9:14Speaker 3: horses and Santa and the Easter Bunny's so scary.
- 9:23Speaker 2: This is so yeah, but like, when are you ever
- 9:28Speaker 2: faced with that fear?
- 9:30Speaker 3: Halloween?
- 9:33Speaker 5: Murray eels are freaky.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Ray eels are fucking so scary, dude, honestly unwashed lemons.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Think about how many people touch citrus before it gets
- 9:43Speaker 3: to you. And it's not a fruit that people wash,
- 9:46Speaker 3: so like it's been through like everything it's been through
- 9:49Speaker 3: in its life and just like arrives to you like
- 9:51Speaker 3: that disgusting. And then hotel room carpet never cleaned, you
- 9:55Speaker 3: walk on it barefoot.
- 9:56Speaker 2: No.
- 9:57Speaker 3: No octopus so smart popsicle sticks. Don't even get me started.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I can't.
- 10:03Speaker 5: I think octopus. Octopus are uh aliens.
- 10:08Speaker 3: They're so smart and they're so strong, it's so scary. Straws, yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 3: because like I saw a video one time of a
- 10:16Speaker 3: girl who was like walking down her stairs and she
- 10:19Speaker 3: tripped and she had like a thing in her hand,
- 10:21Speaker 3: and the straw went through her mouth and like up
- 10:24Speaker 3: through her nose because they don't break.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Interesting. Ok, you're gonna win the depth of phobias, how
- 10:32Speaker 5: about you, Briana?
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yeah? For sure.
- 10:34Speaker 1: One thing that you will learn, Stuck, is your child
- 10:36Speaker 1: gets older, is that all of your fears start to
- 10:39Speaker 1: sort of wash away, because everything that brings you anxiety
- 10:43Speaker 1: is just that keeping your kid alive.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And safe, and it starts to one positive.
- 10:49Speaker 1: There's a huge negative that comes with that because you're
- 10:51Speaker 1: stressed constantly and you don't sleep as well.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But your fears stuck.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You start to detach from the things you've been scared
- 10:57Speaker 1: of your whole life, because like, who fucking cares as
- 10:59Speaker 1: long as my kids, Okay, clowns, spiders, heights. I used
- 11:03Speaker 1: to have all the predictable ones. Lately, though, I've had
- 11:08Speaker 1: this irrational fear I like to ride my bike often
- 11:11Speaker 1: that I'm gonna be attacked by a panther that's just
- 11:14Speaker 1: sort of found its way out into the suburbs. And
- 11:19Speaker 1: the second you lay eyes on a cat that has
- 11:22Speaker 1: that that's that fast, and that has that much power,
- 11:27Speaker 1: you're done.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So there's this.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Irrational fear that, like I drive, I ride my bike
- 11:31Speaker 1: by these bushes, there's gonna be a panther that pops out.
- 11:34Speaker 2: That's one of the ones that sticks out to me.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Fear of panthers.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I get the kid thing, because now that's really
- 11:42Speaker 4: all I care about, although there's not He's still a newborn,
- 11:46Speaker 4: so there's not much.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Like I'm just fearful.
- 11:49Speaker 4: We have like cameras and monitors on them, so like
- 11:52Speaker 4: just making sure that he's always breathing and okay, but
- 11:56Speaker 4: I used my adult things. I used to be afraid
- 11:59Speaker 4: of spiders. I guess, like you know, like every kid is.
- 12:02Speaker 4: But I like spiders now around my house they like
- 12:05Speaker 4: take care of the past that there's like a spider
- 12:07Speaker 4: with a web living outside right near my house.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Like he's fine, but outside is different.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So how are you handling if there's one that's like
- 12:15Speaker 1: at least the size of the majority of your palm
- 12:18Speaker 1: in the house, are you disposing of that or are
- 12:21Speaker 1: you like, oh good, he'll take care of the other
- 12:23Speaker 1: things I don't want here and you just kind of
- 12:25Speaker 1: let him ride.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Uh, I mean the size of my I don't live
- 12:29Speaker 4: in Florida, so like size of my palm. That's I
- 12:33Speaker 4: don't know what I would do there. But if I
- 12:34Speaker 4: if I see like a big if I saw a
- 12:37Speaker 4: spider like across the room, like I'm cool with it.
- 12:41Speaker 5: He can chill there in my like basement, I guess
- 12:46Speaker 5: now like betterom.
- 12:47Speaker 4: I don't want to be sleeping with one. But ah,
- 12:50Speaker 4: but that's that's about it. But before we go to
- 12:52Speaker 4: is Evan, does Evan have any does Evan even here
- 12:55Speaker 4: to that. Yeah, Evan, did you have a fear of
- 12:58Speaker 4: getting uh community noted?
- 13:02Speaker 5: I saw you got the other day.
- 13:04Speaker 8: I did get community noted. Yeah, no, Stephen F. Austin
- 13:08Speaker 8: in any databases. So we had that crowd coming after me.
- 13:11Speaker 5: It's good.
- 13:12Speaker 8: It's nice to keep me on my toes. Honestly, the
- 13:14Speaker 8: only thing I'm actually scared of is, and this is
- 13:18Speaker 8: just the weirdest thing, but it is very evan, is
- 13:20Speaker 8: just not making it to the end of the season.
- 13:24Speaker 8: So like whenever I end up perishing and not being
- 13:27Speaker 8: on this earth anymore, not knowing who won a title
- 13:30Speaker 8: is something that actually fears me to this.
- 13:33Speaker 5: All right, So if you let's say that you because
- 13:39Speaker 5: I get that as well.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Isn't that But there's always something going on, Like.
- 13:45Speaker 5: If I told you that you died a peaceful death.
- 13:50Speaker 4: When you know you are eighty five and you got
- 13:54Speaker 4: to go in your sleep and you get to pick
- 13:57Speaker 4: the date, what would be the ideal dates?
- 14:00Speaker 8: So like, it's probably middle of baseball season. I could
- 14:02Speaker 8: probably get away with not knowing who wins the World
- 14:05Speaker 8: Series as long as it's not a World Cup here.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Like so uh, we're talking like probably right after August.
- 14:13Speaker 8: Yeah, like made me preferably like in that July August
- 14:16Speaker 8: area before camp start, after we've got an NBA champion.
- 14:20Speaker 8: I think that would be right around the good time
- 14:22Speaker 8: for me to peacefully go.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, just I'm okay, going like May.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I could see.
- 14:30Speaker 1: It's right, nobody wants to die in March. I could
- 14:33Speaker 1: see Evan on his death that going. Did Joey Chestnut
- 14:36Speaker 1: win the coruct?
- 14:38Speaker 2: How many did he eat?
- 14:39Speaker 8: Is?
- 14:39Speaker 7: Really?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:40Speaker 5: There you go?
- 14:41Speaker 2: Did he hit the over all? Right, I'm a croak,
- 14:43Speaker 2: all right?
- 14:44Speaker 4: To do want to die because he does, he won't
- 14:46Speaker 4: know what happens to his fantasy team in twenty years.
- 14:48Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a nice callback.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Still to come.

- 15:32Speaker 1: College basketball is about to dominate our sports betting brains
- 15:36Speaker 1: for the next couple of months.
- 15:38Speaker 2: We've already got Stucky.
- 15:39Speaker 1: On the pod, but we figured we would add another
- 15:41Speaker 1: college basketball heavyweight to the discussion, Mike Calabrese, college sports
- 15:46Speaker 1: expert here at actionnetwork dot com. You can catch them
- 15:50Speaker 1: on BBOC. Before we get to the nitty gritty, Mike,
- 15:53Speaker 1: first of all, welcome to the show. What are you
- 15:55Speaker 1: scared of other than listening to Stucky talk about holes?
- 15:58Speaker 5: All Right?
- 15:59Speaker 9: So I have like a diagnosed one, and then I
- 16:01Speaker 9: have a weird one, So you choose which one will
- 16:03Speaker 9: be diagnosed diagnosed. Yes, So I have rem behavior disorder,
- 16:10Speaker 9: which means I can sleepwalk and do anything sleepwalking that
- 16:13Speaker 9: I can do awake, and I've worked on it my
- 16:15Speaker 9: whole life, and we're in a much better place. But
- 16:17Speaker 9: parasomnia is the fear of doing anything bad when you're
- 16:22Speaker 9: sleepwalking and having to live with the consequences, So that.
- 16:25Speaker 6: One's not great.
- 16:26Speaker 9: I'll tell you I've found myself in some tricky situations.
- 16:30Speaker 9: I've sleptwalk out of apartment complexes, I've driven a car,
- 16:34Speaker 9: I've done the sleep eating all of that stuff.
- 16:37Speaker 6: So there's that one that's real.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Do you just want to change yourself to your bed?
- 16:41Speaker 9: So Mike Birbiglia, the comedian, also has it. He jumped
- 16:44Speaker 9: out of a third story window at a hotel. I
- 16:47Speaker 9: almost did the same thing, because basically it's like overlays
- 16:50Speaker 9: with your dreams that are hyper realistic. So I thought
- 16:52Speaker 9: there was a bomb in the room, and I tried
- 16:54Speaker 9: to like pull open the sliding door and jump out
- 16:56Speaker 9: of the window, but luckily it was locked. And like
- 16:59Speaker 9: it's almost like the fog is lifting. You don't immediately
- 17:02Speaker 9: know that you're sleeping, but then like it comes to you.
- 17:05Speaker 9: And he sleeps in a sleeping bag that his wife
- 17:07Speaker 9: zips up that he cannot get out of, and I
- 17:09Speaker 9: was like, I would rather just jump out of a
- 17:11Speaker 9: building than have to live like that. But my whole
- 17:13Speaker 9: life so over the years.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Amazing that evolution didn't take care of this for all
- 17:18Speaker 1: of us. Yes, how did anybody slip through the cracks
- 17:21Speaker 1: on that?
- 17:22Speaker 9: We had a couple of situations my wife and I
- 17:25Speaker 9: living in New York where we passed on apartments because
- 17:27Speaker 9: it had like you know, a little tiny verandah or
- 17:31Speaker 9: like you know, porch area outside either the building.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Or our particular unit.
- 17:36Speaker 9: I was like, there's a non zero percent chance that
- 17:38Speaker 9: I'm going to be a pancake on the on the
- 17:40Speaker 9: ground on third third Avenue.
- 17:41Speaker 2: So wow, I feel really stupid. The third story now.
- 17:47Speaker 9: The second one is not diagnosed, and at least by
- 17:50Speaker 9: my internet sleuthory, I could not find a real name
- 17:53Speaker 9: for this.
- 17:54Speaker 6: But my wife's from Pittsburgh.
- 17:55Speaker 9: I'm from Philadelphia and we've done the drive a million
- 17:58Speaker 9: times and anyone who's gone on seventy six across the
- 18:00Speaker 9: state can attest that there's nothing there. It is like
- 18:03Speaker 9: the saddest towns you've ever seen. It's like the towns
- 18:06Speaker 9: that time forgot. They have like chain restaurants that you
- 18:09Speaker 9: thought closed like twenty years ago.
- 18:11Speaker 6: I have this.
- 18:12Speaker 9: Irrational fear if we ever pull off, like to go
- 18:14Speaker 9: to Roy Rogers or something that some series of events
- 18:17Speaker 9: is going to happen that I am forced to live
- 18:20Speaker 9: there and like restart my life and I am locked
- 18:23Speaker 9: in place. I guess the only analogy is, like I
- 18:25Speaker 9: guess like Beetlejuice a little bit where they die and
- 18:27Speaker 9: then they're stuck in that town, in that house, like
- 18:30Speaker 9: kind of that element.
- 18:31Speaker 6: It's an irrational fear of mine.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Wait, the worst thing you've done while sleepwalking?
- 18:36Speaker 6: Worst is a it's a subjective question.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I did a guy who slipwalk, and he would be
- 18:44Speaker 3: like kind of violent if he like if you tried
- 18:46Speaker 3: to like stop whatever he was doing. So I would
- 18:48Speaker 3: just like lay in bed like with like the fear
- 18:51Speaker 3: of God in me.
- 18:53Speaker 9: But the current one is that probably like once every
- 18:56Speaker 9: couple months, I think that there's a bird in the
- 18:58Speaker 9: bed and I will immediately starts stripping off all the
- 19:01Speaker 9: sheets and my life gets so pissed naturally with that.
- 19:05Speaker 6: That's the recurring one that puts me in hot water.
- 19:07Speaker 9: There's nothing like coming out of a fog, and it's
- 19:09Speaker 9: like I'm already down like eighty points here. I'm getting
- 19:11Speaker 9: blown out in this argument for being a total maniac.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Well, that sounds like an awful feeling. I'm not sure
- 19:17Speaker 1: that it rises to the levels of asking Mick Cronin
- 19:20Speaker 1: a question.
- 19:22Speaker 10: Thoughts in the student section, channing Booker's name, I could
- 19:25Speaker 10: give a rat's ass about the other team student section
- 19:29Speaker 10: overall the way that I would like to give you
- 19:32Speaker 10: a kudos. Your worst question I've ever even asked? All right,
- 19:38Speaker 10: did you did you like you should take it the preparation?
- 19:41Speaker 6: Do you really think I care about the other No?
- 19:43Speaker 6: I don't think you care about.
- 19:44Speaker 5: The other question?
- 19:45Speaker 10: You are here, you are come on, dude, no reason
- 19:49Speaker 10: the yess you were. Everybody's standing here listening to everybody.
- 19:52Speaker 10: This is on camera, they can hear you. I answered
- 19:55Speaker 10: the question. I could give a rat's ass about the
- 19:57Speaker 10: other team student section. I coach UCLA. I don't care
- 20:01Speaker 10: about Michigan State students. Who cares?
- 20:05Speaker 2: Mike your thoughts on.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It seems like the last of a dying breed of
- 20:12Speaker 1: these coaches that feel like they can get away with
- 20:15Speaker 1: being that over the top, rude and acerbic to anybody
- 20:20Speaker 1: that they talk to. Are you surprised that it still
- 20:23Speaker 1: works for Mick Cronin or that he hasn't been Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 1: Air quotes that he hasn't been phased out of the
- 20:29Speaker 1: sport yet, because it feels like all of the Bobby
- 20:31Speaker 1: Knights have been slowly kicked out.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Yeah, he's Bobby Knight without the charm or the championships.
- 20:36Speaker 6: That's basically what he's going for.
- 20:38Speaker 9: And U STLA would fire them, but they're underwater financially.
- 20:41Speaker 6: They can't afford to fire him.
- 20:42Speaker 9: And I think he knows that I never had such
- 20:46Speaker 9: secondhand frustration as I did watching that reporter basically get
- 20:50Speaker 9: dunked on. He just keeps like shitting on this guy
- 20:53Speaker 9: where it's like the worst question I've ever heard in
- 20:54Speaker 9: my entire life, keeps angling at him, keeps going, and
- 20:58Speaker 9: then drops the line are.
- 20:59Speaker 6: You raising your voice at me?
- 21:01Speaker 9: Which anyone who's ever been in a relationship, maybe it's
- 21:03Speaker 9: my PTSD from bad relationships.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Whenever anyone puts you in that box, you have no moves.
- 21:08Speaker 6: It's it's a great move by Cronin.
- 21:10Speaker 9: The only problem is the cameras were rolling on him,
- 21:12Speaker 9: so he comes off as an asshole.
- 21:13Speaker 6: But if it's one on one, that's a kill.
- 21:15Speaker 9: Shot move in an argument because if you know the person,
- 21:18Speaker 9: you're angrier. But then you can't respond because you have
- 21:21Speaker 9: to prove that you weren't yelling and you have to
- 21:23Speaker 9: be calmer. So yeah, Cronin is.
- 21:26Speaker 6: He's the worst.
- 21:26Speaker 9: He's just a yellow belly coward for like bullying a
- 21:29Speaker 9: guy for no reason, throwing his own player.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Out of the game.
- 21:32Speaker 6: But he knows he's playing with house money.
- 21:33Speaker 9: They can't fire him because they can't afford it right now,
- 21:35Speaker 9: So yeah, it's unfortunate.
- 21:37Speaker 4: He just seems he just seemed even more miserable since
- 21:41Speaker 4: he went out to the West Coast, Like he's he's
- 21:43Speaker 4: like a Midwest guy through and through, Like I feel
- 21:45Speaker 4: like everything would be better for both parties if they
- 21:49Speaker 4: could just amicably and cheaply for inexpensively part ways. And
- 21:55Speaker 4: he goes back to like Cincy. I mean, he was
- 21:58Speaker 4: at a Louisville, Mary State then he was the head
- 22:01Speaker 4: coach for Cincy Prewrie.
- 22:01Speaker 5: It just doesn't seem happy.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think he's ever has ever been happy,
- 22:06Speaker 4: but he seems even less satisfied with things since he
- 22:11Speaker 4: went out to the West Coast.
- 22:12Speaker 5: But yeah, they're in danger of missing the tournament. They
- 22:17Speaker 5: need to start getting some wins here and we'll see
- 22:20Speaker 5: how they do on Saturday. Against the juggernaut of Illinois.
- 22:24Speaker 1: So let's kind of peel it all back and get
- 22:27Speaker 1: people caught up. A lot of people that are listening
- 22:29Speaker 1: right now are just starting to get into the world
- 22:31Speaker 1: of betting college basketball conference tournaments about to start. The
- 22:34Speaker 1: NCAA Tournament will be here before we know it, Mike,
- 22:37Speaker 1: if you had to sort of catch people up that
- 22:39Speaker 1: are just starting to turn their attention to college basketball
- 22:42Speaker 1: on what this season has been all about, mostly at
- 22:45Speaker 1: the top end, or some of those underdog stories and
- 22:50Speaker 1: teams that we're going to fall in love with in March.
- 22:52Speaker 1: What do people need to know at a base level
- 22:55Speaker 1: about this college basketball season.
- 22:58Speaker 9: So what you're probably hearing is that this is the
- 23:00Speaker 9: best collection of elite teams that can win the championship
- 23:03Speaker 9: in recent memory. It's not your imagination because you can
- 23:05Speaker 9: look just at ken Pom and look back. Let's go
- 23:08Speaker 9: to the first year after COVID in twenty twenty one.
- 23:10Speaker 9: The two teams that played in the championship, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 9: Gonzaga and Baylor both at Ken Palm Net ratings above thirty.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Right now we have eight of those teams.
- 23:18Speaker 9: Then you got Miami of Ohio and SLEW who are
- 23:20Speaker 9: fantastic mid majors who could make the second weekend make
- 23:23Speaker 9: a deep run that wouldn't shock anybody. So it has
- 23:26Speaker 9: that nice balance of the juggernauts at the top and
- 23:28Speaker 9: the potential cinderellas to make a run to even the
- 23:31Speaker 9: final four is not out of the rum possibility. And
- 23:33Speaker 9: then on top of it, you're sacking the best freshman
- 23:35Speaker 9: class since probably two thousand and seven when we had
- 23:38Speaker 9: Katie Odin, Conley, Brandon Wright, Spencer Halls all top ten
- 23:41Speaker 9: NBA draft picks. That young was in there too, but
- 23:44Speaker 9: just the volume of impactful freshmen and the quality at
- 23:48Speaker 9: the top of this class, it seems like there's five
- 23:50Speaker 9: or six guys that could go to the NBA and
- 23:52Speaker 9: be significant stars within a year or two. That just
- 23:56Speaker 9: doesn't happen all that often in this sport. And then
- 23:58Speaker 9: you filter in all of the side angles with his eligibility,
- 24:02Speaker 9: with players dropping down from the pro leagues overseas dropping
- 24:05Speaker 9: in from the pro leagues.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Here in the States, there's so much intrigue.
- 24:08Speaker 9: And while college football, I think is having difficulty wrapping
- 24:11Speaker 9: their arms around the transfer portal and the continuity issues,
- 24:14Speaker 9: and football is just a different sport where I think
- 24:16Speaker 9: the quality play is a little bit better if you
- 24:18Speaker 9: can keep your core offense or defense, keep your play caller.
- 24:21Speaker 9: That's becoming more and more difficult. And college shops has
- 24:23Speaker 9: always been a situation where if you can get the
- 24:25Speaker 9: best five players on the court, I mean it goes
- 24:27Speaker 9: all the way back to their AAU days. They're more
- 24:30Speaker 9: fine tuned for that kind of experience. I think we're
- 24:32Speaker 9: all the beneficiaries of it, because the sport top to
- 24:35Speaker 9: bottom right now is as good as it's ever been.
- 24:38Speaker 4: I used that on about the freshman just to show
- 24:41Speaker 4: you the depth of how good this freshman. I mean,
- 24:43Speaker 4: it's insane, how good this freshman classes.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I mean you can even go.
- 24:46Speaker 4: To like a guy like Nigel Nigel James on Marquette
- 24:49Speaker 4: last night, who was going off against Sint Johns.
- 24:51Speaker 5: They're not even gonna make the tournament.
- 24:52Speaker 4: But there's obviously the names at the top that are
- 24:55Speaker 4: clear with you know, Boozer DEVANSA Peterson. That's a whole
- 25:02Speaker 4: nother story, but those are the you know, the guys
- 25:03Speaker 4: are gonna go Caleb Wilson, these guys are gonna go
- 25:07Speaker 4: on the top five. But take to show you how
- 25:10Speaker 4: deep it is in the history of college basketball, the
- 25:14Speaker 4: top three scoring games by freshmen on the road against
- 25:19Speaker 4: top twenty five opponents have all happened within the past month.
- 25:23Speaker 4: A Cuff last night had forty nine against Alabama, Woggler
- 25:29Speaker 4: for Illinois had forty six at Purdue last month, and
- 25:32Speaker 4: Flemings for Houston had forty two at Texas Tech last month.
- 25:36Speaker 4: All three the three highest scoring games by freshmen on
- 25:38Speaker 4: the road against top twenty five teams in the history
- 25:40Speaker 4: of the sport that happened within the past month, which
- 25:43Speaker 4: just and they're not even the you know, the consider
- 25:45Speaker 4: the three best that are going to go at the
- 25:47Speaker 4: top of the draft board, although they'll certainly be there
- 25:50Speaker 4: at some point.
- 25:51Speaker 5: So yeah, this this freshman class is.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Historically dominant, and you're gonna hear about a lot of them,
- 25:58Speaker 4: and they're gonna have a huge.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Say in March.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I am the definition of a casual when this time
- 26:03Speaker 3: of year rolls around for college basketball. So do you
- 26:06Speaker 3: have any tips for people like me? I mean, I've
- 26:08Speaker 3: been sitting here kind of reflecting on my NFL season.
- 26:11Speaker 3: What did I learn? What can I change for next
- 26:12Speaker 3: year to be better at gambling? Are there any tips
- 26:16Speaker 3: that you have for people like me or people who
- 26:18Speaker 3: are listening to this show who are kind of switching
- 26:20Speaker 3: from the NFL over to college basketball and heading into
- 26:23Speaker 3: this point of the season.
- 26:25Speaker 5: The first one.
- 26:26Speaker 9: It seems simple, but folks don't consider it all that often.
- 26:29Speaker 9: When they're in a march madness pool, always consider your
- 26:32Speaker 9: strategy visa v. How many people are in the pool.
- 26:34Speaker 9: If you're in a smaller pool and you want to
- 26:36Speaker 9: go really chalky, that's not a bad strategy. It certainly
- 26:39Speaker 9: worked last year. The top of the sport this year
- 26:42Speaker 9: is looking like, you know, the winner is probably going
- 26:45Speaker 9: to come from the one or two line. If you're
- 26:47Speaker 9: in a smaller pool, that's a great strategy.
- 26:48Speaker 6: If you're in a really big pool, the likelihood.
- 26:51Speaker 9: Is a lot of people are going to copy that
- 26:52Speaker 9: strategy and you're going to end up, at best in
- 26:55Speaker 9: a split situation where you're not going to make a
- 26:56Speaker 9: lot of money. So if that's the case and you're
- 26:58Speaker 9: you know, over let's call it a hundred entries, you
- 27:01Speaker 9: want to get a little bit spicier with it, and
- 27:03Speaker 9: I think there's ways to do it in a responsible way,
- 27:06Speaker 9: And everybody loves to have those five twelve upsets, but
- 27:09Speaker 9: try to limit yourself in terms of those double digit
- 27:11Speaker 9: seeds going to the second weekend. You know, there's ways
- 27:14Speaker 9: for you to enjoy it and knock out, you know,
- 27:16Speaker 9: a three or four seed in the first round, but
- 27:18Speaker 9: you don't necessarily need to keep pushing that team ahead.
- 27:21Speaker 9: And when you do it that way, you know there's
- 27:23Speaker 9: an opportunity as well if all of a sudden that
- 27:26Speaker 9: thirteen seed wins and you have that buyer's remorse, you like,
- 27:28Speaker 9: this team's going to go. You're still going to get
- 27:30Speaker 9: a really good price in you know, live betting situation
- 27:33Speaker 9: in the next round if you want to keep riding that.
- 27:35Speaker 6: So don't necessarily think about it siloed.
- 27:37Speaker 9: I have my tournament bracket and I have my individual bets,
- 27:40Speaker 9: and never shell the two cross like you can really
- 27:43Speaker 9: kind of play off of each other. And the other
- 27:45Speaker 9: piece of it is, and this is just my own
- 27:46Speaker 9: personal preference, don't have like seventy five different brackets where
- 27:49Speaker 9: you're just, you know, all of a sudden, picking against yourself.
- 27:52Speaker 6: It's the same issue with fantasy football.
- 27:53Speaker 9: If you have too many teams, then you're competing against
- 27:55Speaker 9: a guy who's you also have on your team and
- 27:58Speaker 9: it gets too complicated, and I think it sucks the
- 28:00Speaker 9: way out of it, So try to cap it in
- 28:02Speaker 9: single digits and have some fun with it.
- 28:04Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, it feels like piggybacking off
- 28:06Speaker 3: of your point. It feels like the tournament as we
- 28:08Speaker 3: know it has kind of died in the last couple
- 28:10Speaker 3: of years because of the portal and nil and all
- 28:13Speaker 3: of that kind of stuff. It feels like favorites are
- 28:15Speaker 3: from here on going to be kind of the way
- 28:17Speaker 3: to go. Do you think that it's too late to
- 28:19Speaker 3: get any value kind of really getting on favorites in
- 28:23Speaker 3: the beginning of the tournament, just because these teams that
- 28:27Speaker 3: we saw have a lot of continuity, used to be
- 28:29Speaker 3: these Cinderella stories like who had a ton of seniors,
- 28:32Speaker 3: had played together for a long time, been able to
- 28:33Speaker 3: hold on to their coach. Do you think that there's
- 28:36Speaker 3: any value in just really heavy loading favorites or do
- 28:39Speaker 3: you think that there's still potential for you know, the
- 28:42Speaker 3: Saint Peter's that we used to see.
- 28:44Speaker 9: I think at this point, the you know, it's already
- 28:47Speaker 9: kind of left the station in terms of grabbing value
- 28:50Speaker 9: on teams that are in the Ken Palm Top fifteen.
- 28:52Speaker 9: You'll get a team like Iowa State to make the
- 28:54Speaker 9: final four. They're five to two out of the market.
- 28:57Speaker 9: That's a waste of your money to have it tied
- 28:59Speaker 9: up to have so many potential outcomes to only you know,
- 29:02Speaker 9: cash a little bit north of.
- 29:03Speaker 6: Two to one.
- 29:04Speaker 9: But there is an interesting way if you want to
- 29:06Speaker 9: play some favorites and it Stuck's favorite, you know, two
- 29:09Speaker 9: week stretch of college basketball which is before March Madness
- 29:12Speaker 9: conference tournament week, and I think there's some really good
- 29:15Speaker 9: plays like that same Iowa State team is probably going
- 29:18Speaker 9: to go off at three or four to one to
- 29:19Speaker 9: win the Big Twelve tournament. So you know they're going
- 29:21Speaker 9: to be behind Houston, they're going to be behind Arizona.
- 29:24Speaker 9: So if you're enamored with some of these top teams
- 29:26Speaker 9: from a value perspective, it's much better to get in
- 29:29Speaker 9: on them during their conference tournament play as opposed to
- 29:31Speaker 9: waiting for the first or second weekend.
- 29:33Speaker 4: I would also add on just for general tips betting
- 29:37Speaker 4: during much I mean, like, if you haven't been following,
- 29:39Speaker 4: the market is gets more and more efficient with each
- 29:43Speaker 4: passing year, I mean, and you can look at you know,
- 29:45Speaker 4: just take the first round. I remember ten years ago,
- 29:49Speaker 4: ten fifteen, I mean it was even if you go
- 29:52Speaker 4: five or six years ago, you would have these opening
- 29:54Speaker 4: round games, the lines would come out that some of
- 29:57Speaker 4: these dogs would be way too high. You'd have to
- 29:59Speaker 4: get the early they'd move, you know, three or four points.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Now they're opening much lower. The market is much sharper,
- 30:06Speaker 4: and you know, it's a much more efficient market now.
- 30:10Speaker 4: So if you're you know, getting into betting in your
- 30:14Speaker 4: it's more recreational. He's a much you know, easier way
- 30:19Speaker 4: to attack college basketball betting is player props. It's gonna
- 30:23Speaker 4: be a less efficient market. We I'll do a shameless plug,
- 30:27Speaker 4: you know, Nick Giff and Sean Kerner they kill that.
- 30:30Speaker 4: You can follow along, become an Action Pro subscriber and
- 30:33Speaker 4: just follow them on the Action app. They do a
- 30:35Speaker 4: good job there. And then just a general piece of
- 30:38Speaker 4: advice to always you always want to get the best number. Again,
- 30:41Speaker 4: you can use the Action app for that, but just
- 30:43Speaker 4: shop around, don't cost yourself a half point or a
- 30:46Speaker 4: point for no reason, and then don't chase like it.
- 30:49Speaker 5: I've seen so.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Many people get into trouble during the tournament, especially that
- 30:54Speaker 4: that first weekend, Like you're gonna have games going on, starting,
- 30:57Speaker 4: you know, right at noon Eastern, and they're gonna go
- 31:00Speaker 4: all the way till midnight, and there's just waves of games,
- 31:02Speaker 4: and you're gonna have bad beats and you're gonna get
- 31:04Speaker 4: bit and then you know, you could be down a
- 31:07Speaker 4: lot going into the late slate, and the last thing
- 31:09Speaker 4: you want to do is start chasing on something where
- 31:12Speaker 4: you don't have an edge on, and then those things
- 31:13Speaker 4: compound and then all of a sudden and it's got
- 31:15Speaker 4: that they're in conference certain week and the next day
- 31:17Speaker 4: games start again at noon, and then you're in a tailspin.
- 31:20Speaker 4: So anyone like just starting out that is kind of
- 31:22Speaker 4: susceptible to that, I would just put make sure you
- 31:24Speaker 4: put your bets in before the entire slate and then
- 31:29Speaker 4: just roll with them so you never get in trouble
- 31:32Speaker 4: that way, because I've seen that lead to some pretty
- 31:35Speaker 4: bad things.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But before you move on, Stuck, I would love to
- 31:39Speaker 1: get both of your opinions on this, because I think
- 31:41Speaker 1: you brought up an interesting point that if you're attacking
- 31:44Speaker 1: this as a recreational better this is an important lens
- 31:49Speaker 1: to look at the tournament through and not chasing with
- 31:52Speaker 1: all the games. Chasing is a bad idea in sports
- 31:54Speaker 1: betting in general. When you have this sort of menu
- 31:57Speaker 1: in front of you and all the excitement, and you're
- 31:59Speaker 1: around your buddies or people at work, it can get
- 32:02Speaker 1: worse because you see, not only are you doing that,
- 32:04Speaker 1: the person that's sitting across the bar from you is
- 32:07Speaker 1: having a great day and that can definitely spike that emotion.
- 32:10Speaker 1: When you mentioned the recreational versus the professional side, and Mike,
- 32:15Speaker 1: I want to bring you in for this, how do
- 32:18Speaker 1: professional betters or the sharper betters that bet college basketball
- 32:23Speaker 1: all season, how does the tournament differ from the way
- 32:28Speaker 1: they're betting college hoops throughout the year at all.
- 32:32Speaker 9: First, the first answer right away is there are so
- 32:34Speaker 9: many unique situational travel angles, sandwich games, look ahead spots,
- 32:40Speaker 9: emotional letdowns that you would be foolish to not consider
- 32:44Speaker 9: during the regular season.
- 32:45Speaker 6: When you get to March.
- 32:47Speaker 9: What's interesting is that so many of these teams spends
- 32:50Speaker 9: the majority, particularly the power teams, spend the majority of
- 32:54Speaker 9: their non conference schedule playing on their home floor. They
- 32:56Speaker 9: may play in, you know, in early season tournaments, they
- 32:59Speaker 9: may go to or play at the player's era or
- 33:01Speaker 9: something like that. But they in a lot of these games,
- 33:03Speaker 9: they're paying other teams to come to them, and then
- 33:06Speaker 9: they get into the conference slate.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Ends mc cronin complains about this.
- 33:09Speaker 9: He thinks that he singled out and UCLA is the
- 33:10Speaker 9: only team that has to play back to backs on
- 33:12Speaker 9: the road or go cross country whatever.
- 33:14Speaker 6: But for the most part, the major conferences.
- 33:16Speaker 9: Try their best to have it be fair in terms
- 33:18Speaker 9: of travel and in terms of rest. And then you
- 33:20Speaker 9: get into conference tournament time and you're playing potentially three
- 33:23Speaker 9: games in a row of four games in a row,
- 33:25Speaker 9: and that is something where you need to look at
- 33:28Speaker 9: the historical data about how some coaches are just better
- 33:32Speaker 9: suited at the quick turnaround time, getting their players ready,
- 33:35Speaker 9: and how deep their benches.
- 33:36Speaker 6: Those things start to come into.
- 33:38Speaker 9: Play in a lot more of a meaningful way during
- 33:41Speaker 9: March madness, whether it's the conference tournament or March madness.
- 33:44Speaker 9: Then it does necessarily during the regular season when you
- 33:47Speaker 9: go six or seven days between games, you don't need
- 33:49Speaker 9: to think about load management as much, and you don't
- 33:52Speaker 9: need to necessarily panic in terms of prep because you know,
- 33:55Speaker 9: you know months six months ahead of time who you're
- 33:57Speaker 9: going to play on February second and then February tenth.
- 34:00Speaker 9: There's some coaches and stuck talks about.
- 34:02Speaker 6: It all the time.
- 34:02Speaker 9: You look at that certainly have that ability to be
- 34:06Speaker 9: able to game plan for multiple opponents and be able
- 34:09Speaker 9: to change things up on the fly. Patino can do it,
- 34:11Speaker 9: you know, Oregon has been able to do it over
- 34:13Speaker 9: the years with Dana Altman.
- 34:14Speaker 6: That's when you need to as someone.
- 34:16Speaker 9: Who's placing a bet, whether you're a casual or sharp,
- 34:19Speaker 9: you need to have that factored in more than you
- 34:21Speaker 9: do during the regular season.
- 34:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I would add that coaching becomes I think more
- 34:25Speaker 4: critical matchups, things that are tougher to prepare for in
- 34:30Speaker 4: a tournament setting. But I know a lot of sharp
- 34:32Speaker 4: betters who just aren't firing as much towards the end
- 34:35Speaker 4: of the year, and especially when the tournament markets are
- 34:36Speaker 4: more efficient, I know some that are spending more time
- 34:40Speaker 4: on You have all these other tournaments going on and
- 34:43Speaker 4: right the teams that didn't make the tournament. And this
- 34:46Speaker 4: is when because of the era that we're living in,
- 34:50Speaker 4: You're because of the transfer portal, because of everything else,
- 34:53Speaker 4: You're gonna have lots of guys who don't play and
- 34:56Speaker 4: then college basketball that because it comes an information game
- 34:59Speaker 4: and that's so trying to figure out who's playing in
- 35:02Speaker 4: these games and getting ahead of some of those line moves.
- 35:05Speaker 4: That's probably a much bigger edge in the terminal, though
- 35:08Speaker 4: not nearly as fun. But that's what I spend most
- 35:11Speaker 4: of my time on for these games, the matchups, the coaching,
- 35:15Speaker 4: those little angles because for the most part, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 4: this time of the year, we know where most of
- 35:19Speaker 4: these teams are are power raided. And then for some
- 35:23Speaker 4: some teams, that's figuring out, Okay, what what does what
- 35:26Speaker 4: does this team look like now with someone back, a
- 35:31Speaker 4: key guy back? We don't have a large sample size
- 35:33Speaker 4: for or a team that lost a key player, what
- 35:36Speaker 4: do they look like now? As you know a perfect example,
- 35:40Speaker 4: I mean you have there's a lot of key injuries
- 35:42Speaker 4: right now. So like BYU without Saunders, who was one
- 35:44Speaker 4: of their most important players, U n C without Caleb Wilson.
- 35:48Speaker 4: We'll see when he returns. And then the biggest one
- 35:50Speaker 4: is Texas Tech. I mean, this is a team that
- 35:53Speaker 4: was a Giant slayer. I mean they have wins over
- 35:58Speaker 4: Duke Eras and Houston Houston. It's crazy, like insane and
- 36:04Speaker 4: they're well coached, but they were so reliant on the
- 36:09Speaker 4: one two duo of Anderson and Top and then Top
- 36:13Speaker 4: and opened up so many other things you know out
- 36:17Speaker 4: well shooting open shots.
- 36:19Speaker 5: But losing JT.
- 36:20Speaker 4: Top into an ACL injury, and this is a team
- 36:22Speaker 4: that had no depth, right, this is what I think
- 36:24Speaker 4: among all Power Conference teams, they probably had the fewest
- 36:27Speaker 4: bench minutes. He was that important top and now he's
- 36:31Speaker 4: out for the year. What does Texas Tech do now?
- 36:36Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:36Speaker 4: I mean McCastle and their coach has a history of
- 36:39Speaker 4: you know, at the previous stops in the past defensive
- 36:42Speaker 4: mind to coach playing really really slow, That's what I
- 36:45Speaker 4: would do, Play super slow, condense the game to go,
- 36:49Speaker 4: increase your three point variants.
- 36:50Speaker 5: But it's hard for me to.
- 36:51Speaker 4: See them making a deep run now without Top and
- 36:54Speaker 4: he was that important and the drop off is his
- 36:57Speaker 4: significant Well what does you know? So there's there's a
- 36:59Speaker 4: lot of like that with personnel, uh, you know, guys
- 37:03Speaker 4: coming back, guys who were hurt, trying to figure out
- 37:06Speaker 4: what does that mean? And then additionally, the last thing
- 37:09Speaker 4: I'll mention is what do what do certain conferences? What
- 37:12Speaker 4: does it mean, when maybe there's a team that can
- 37:14Speaker 4: thrive once they get out of conference play, right, Like,
- 37:16Speaker 4: they don't really match up well within their own league,
- 37:20Speaker 4: but once they get out of conference play, they might
- 37:22Speaker 4: be more dangerous.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Uh.
- 37:24Speaker 4: And then maybe there's certain conferences that were just overvalued
- 37:27Speaker 4: in general or undervalued going into the tournament. So yeah,
- 37:33Speaker 4: there's a lot there's a lot more nuanced when you
- 37:35Speaker 4: get out of like the grind and the dog days
- 37:37Speaker 4: of conference play.
- 37:38Speaker 5: So that's that's all.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I'll out there, Mike.
- 37:41Speaker 1: As far as the top end injury goes for Texas Tech,
- 37:45Speaker 1: does that roll them out of being a team that
- 37:47Speaker 1: you would take deep in your bracket?
- 37:49Speaker 2: Yes?
- 37:50Speaker 9: Absolutely, top end was playing at an All American level.
- 37:53Speaker 9: If not, I mean, if it wasn't for Boozer, he
- 37:54Speaker 9: probably probably would have been right there for National Player
- 37:57Speaker 9: of the Year. I have to light again and candle
- 38:00Speaker 9: because I had a parlay of Texas Tech football to
- 38:03Speaker 9: win the Big Twelve and Texas Tech basketball to win
- 38:05Speaker 9: the national championship at one hundred and eighty to one.
- 38:08Speaker 9: But that's up in smoke, that's gone. So I'm ryan
- 38:11Speaker 9: with my Houston ticket. Seventeen to one. Got some good
- 38:13Speaker 9: value there.
- 38:14Speaker 6: But yeah, mcauslin, I think can impact.
- 38:17Speaker 9: The game in terms of his coaching. Defensively, they took
- 38:20Speaker 9: a step back because they wanted to play faster. This year,
- 38:22Speaker 9: they cracked the top twenty five in kempom offensive efficiency.
- 38:25Speaker 9: They look great in those upsets against major teams that
- 38:28Speaker 9: Stuck just mentioned. But I think he can muck these
- 38:31Speaker 9: games up and turn them into kind of a half
- 38:34Speaker 9: court grind and a slog, and that may impact how
- 38:37Speaker 9: you want to bet their totals. But from a perspective
- 38:39Speaker 9: of them winning on the second weekend, I think that's
- 38:41Speaker 9: out the window.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Darren feels like sixteen is the ceiling for them now.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'm very curious to see what they
- 38:48Speaker 1: look like in conference tournament play because the Big twelve
- 38:50Speaker 1: is as stacked as any Darren Peterson, what do we
- 38:53Speaker 1: do with this guy? You missed another second half with cramping,
- 38:57Speaker 1: We go their quotes again? Is this more likely to
- 39:01Speaker 1: impact the Jayhawks in the tournament or the draft stock
- 39:06Speaker 1: of Peterson? Because maybe he's doing this and then it's
- 39:09Speaker 1: something that he definitely won't do when we get to
- 39:12Speaker 1: conference tournament play and then the NCAA tournament, or maybe
- 39:15Speaker 1: he does, and then that's something that with a loaded
- 39:18Speaker 1: draft class, he's not gonna end up being the presumptive
- 39:21Speaker 1: number one overall pick. How do you see this impacting
- 39:24Speaker 1: either Kansas or Peterson himself in the upcoming NBA draft?
- 39:30Speaker 9: You know, maybe it's because I'm a tortured Sixers fan,
- 39:32Speaker 9: but the NBA draft community seems to just be breezing by,
- 39:35Speaker 9: you know, these cramps and the fact that he's opting
- 39:37Speaker 9: out when he has the cold or flew whatever it was,
- 39:40Speaker 9: you know, calling out of games like he made a
- 39:42Speaker 9: three last night, turns around immediately basically slaps Bill self, like,
- 39:45Speaker 9: get me out of this game. You know, when you
- 39:47Speaker 9: live through the embied injuries, Ben Simmons disinterest in playing
- 39:50Speaker 9: the weird scenarios like Mark el Foltz just losing all confidence.
- 39:54Speaker 6: Like I don't want to brush it under the rug.
- 39:55Speaker 9: But it seems like NBA draftnecks are like he's either
- 39:58Speaker 9: number one or number two, just like I don't overthink this.
- 40:01Speaker 9: He'll be fine because he's not dealing with a serious
- 40:03Speaker 9: injury or some kind of chronic injury. Although the cramps
- 40:06Speaker 9: thing is strange. I think Kansas is likely to be
- 40:11Speaker 9: on the wrong side of this narrative at some point
- 40:14Speaker 9: later in the year, because even if you were to
- 40:16Speaker 9: quote unquote rev it up, I think it's just mentally
- 40:20Speaker 9: on the minds of not only Bill self and Peterson
- 40:23Speaker 9: and Peterson's entire handlers, but also in terms of the
- 40:26Speaker 9: confidence this team has, because if you look at Evan Mia,
- 40:29Speaker 9: they play some really good basketball when he's not on
- 40:31Speaker 9: the floor. So you can't tell me that in that
- 40:34Speaker 9: locker room, a guy like Counsel isn't thinking to himself
- 40:37Speaker 9: like player, don't play, just get the hell out of
- 40:39Speaker 9: my way. Like at some point, I think it's going
- 40:41Speaker 9: to have an impact on their overall chemistry because talent wise,
- 40:45Speaker 9: if he was playing thirty four minutes a game, I
- 40:47Speaker 9: think they could be a co favorite to win the
- 40:49Speaker 9: National championship. But I have zero confidence that he's going
- 40:52Speaker 9: to play consistently like that through the Big Twelve tournament
- 40:55Speaker 9: and then in March Madness. I think there's going to
- 40:57Speaker 9: be a game or two where this is going to
- 40:58Speaker 9: rear its head, and I think that's why it makes
- 41:01Speaker 9: it so difficult to kind of project where this team's
- 41:04Speaker 9: going to go. Their ceiling is certainly the Final four.
- 41:06Speaker 9: If not the national championship. But they also could just
- 41:09Speaker 9: kind of mess around with a team in the second round,
- 41:11Speaker 9: the round of thirty two and get bounced and Peterson
- 41:13Speaker 9: at halftimes like, I don't really need this. I'm about
- 41:15Speaker 9: to be a multi multi millionaire.
- 41:17Speaker 6: I'm done. So the range of outcomes for the.
- 41:20Speaker 9: Kansas Jayhawks I think are as wide as any team
- 41:23Speaker 9: in this projected field.
- 41:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say nobody knows.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Nobody knows the real answer, so like they're going to
- 41:28Speaker 4: be it's I don't even think Bill self knows. He
- 41:31Speaker 4: finally showed like the first bit of frustration after the
- 41:34Speaker 4: game last night, so yeah, it's definitely something to watch.
- 41:37Speaker 5: I have Kansas Final four features.
- 41:39Speaker 4: I'm hoping that he does just lock in come March,
- 41:42Speaker 4: but it certainly worries and what we've seen.
- 41:45Speaker 3: I want to talk about the SAC. I think I'm
- 41:47Speaker 3: having such a hard time switching from football into the
- 41:51Speaker 3: basketball season because the SEC kind of sucks at basketball
- 41:54Speaker 3: this year. But because of that, it feels pretty wide open.
- 41:57Speaker 3: What are your thoughts on the SEC tournament coming up?
- 42:00Speaker 3: Is there any way to make money on this? I
- 42:02Speaker 3: want to get into basketball again because I want a
- 42:05Speaker 3: lot of money on Florida last year. But I'm having
- 42:07Speaker 3: I think that this is what is killing college basketball
- 42:09Speaker 3: for me this year, is that all of the teams
- 42:11Speaker 3: that I love and care about blow Well.
- 42:14Speaker 9: I'm going to put some optimism put a spin on this,
- 42:16Speaker 9: which is Florida is going to be the presumptive favorite
- 42:19Speaker 9: for the SEC Tournament.
- 42:21Speaker 6: Florida's guard play is up and down enough that they
- 42:24Speaker 6: could lose in the first round that tournament.
- 42:26Speaker 9: Yes, their offensive rebounding their bigs are incredible. It generally
- 42:29Speaker 9: gives them a higher floor.
- 42:31Speaker 6: But Boogie Flans.
- 42:32Speaker 9: Can shoot the way his way out of a game
- 42:34Speaker 9: for the Gators, and Lee has not been the kind
- 42:36Speaker 9: of replacement at the point that they were hoping when
- 42:39Speaker 9: they got them out of the portal from Princeton. So,
- 42:41Speaker 9: in terms of a power conference league with a team
- 42:43Speaker 9: that's clearly at the top, and they will be priced
- 42:45Speaker 9: that way, I don't necessarily have this confidence that they're
- 42:48Speaker 9: going to just glide through the SEC Tournament and use
- 42:51Speaker 9: that as a springboard into March Madness and get back
- 42:53Speaker 9: to the Final Four for the second straight year. I
- 42:56Speaker 9: don't necessarily see that. And there's a lot of teams
- 42:58Speaker 9: in the SEC and you saw it last night with Arkansas.
- 43:01Speaker 9: When everything's working for them offensively, they're an incredibly dangerous team.
- 43:05Speaker 9: Vanderbilt went into a deep hibernation, you know, for about
- 43:08Speaker 9: the last three weeks, and then all of a sudden
- 43:09Speaker 9: just woke up. Last night at Missoo almost had one
- 43:11Speaker 9: of the most absurd comeback victories where they hit a
- 43:14Speaker 9: three in the final three seconds, they get a steal,
- 43:16Speaker 9: and they rim out on a half quarter. That's another
- 43:19Speaker 9: team that if you just look at how they were
- 43:21Speaker 9: playing in the first six weeks of the season, they
- 43:23Speaker 9: were clearly a top ten team. So it's not that
- 43:25Speaker 9: difficult to talk yourself into some of these teams not
- 43:28Speaker 9: named Florida to win the SEC. And really, I think
- 43:31Speaker 9: you just second have to embrace the madness of it,
- 43:34Speaker 9: in the excitement because a lot of these teams are
- 43:36Speaker 9: high variants and not just throw them a three point perspective,
- 43:38Speaker 9: which is always across college basketball.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Anybody can get hot and knock down fifteen threes.
- 43:43Speaker 9: But also there's just some singular players like a Cuff
- 43:45Speaker 9: that we discussed earlier, who he's got March madness Darling
- 43:48Speaker 9: ridden all over him, and with coach cal As well,
- 43:51Speaker 9: you know you have someone you can have issues with
- 43:53Speaker 9: some of his early flameouts at Kentucky, certainly later in
- 43:56Speaker 9: his tenure in the Big Dance, But this is someone
- 43:59Speaker 9: who's been through all the battles and I think he's
- 44:01Speaker 9: pushing the right buttons right now. It seems like this
- 44:04Speaker 9: team is adding confidence. If they can just start rebounding
- 44:06Speaker 9: the basketball a little bit better, I'd be all in
- 44:08Speaker 9: on Wubig SUI.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Embrace the suck. That's what I took away from that.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Yeah, this Florida team not quite as good as they
- 44:15Speaker 1: were last year, but they are heating up at the
- 44:17Speaker 1: right time. Darius Acuff, by the way, forty nine points
- 44:21Speaker 1: in an overtime, double overtime thriller last night, as we
- 44:24Speaker 1: are recording this on a Thursday, so all of us
- 44:29Speaker 1: here coincidentally are remarkably rated similarly. In Ken Palm, I'm
- 44:34Speaker 1: a UCF guy, Kendra's an Auburn girl. Stucky, we're giving
- 44:38Speaker 1: you Kentucky thirtieth and Ken Palm for the Wildcats thirty
- 44:43Speaker 1: fourth for Auburn, and UCF is forty eighth. And they've
- 44:47Speaker 1: got some senior leadership and some salid three point shooting.
- 44:51Speaker 2: If they get to the dance.
- 44:52Speaker 1: They could potentially be one of those teams that upset
- 44:54Speaker 1: someone in the first round if.
- 44:56Speaker 2: This was the and then who's your team? Where did you?
- 45:02Speaker 2: Who do you?
- 45:03Speaker 9: I started minorgrad at Miszoo before going to Loyola Maryland's
- 45:06Speaker 9: I don't think the Greyhounds are going to knockoff Navy
- 45:08Speaker 9: in the Patriot League tournament.
- 45:09Speaker 6: So let's keep it with Maszoo here for this conversation.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Okay, Missouri fifty second and Keim Palm if those were
- 45:15Speaker 1: the final four, somehow, some way we got to a
- 45:18Speaker 1: final four with Kentucky, Auburn, Missoo, and UCF, which sounds
- 45:26Speaker 1: like a final four that my six year old would
- 45:28Speaker 1: put together if I handed him a bracket.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Who's coming out alive?
- 45:32Speaker 9: I mean, who wants to jump in and make their
- 45:33Speaker 9: case first? I'm not making the case for Miszoo. They
- 45:35Speaker 9: turned the ball over too much. They're many cases negative
- 45:39Speaker 9: in the turnover margin on a nightly basis. They're not
- 45:41Speaker 9: great on the defensive glass. Yes, they can shoot, but
- 45:44Speaker 9: they've also been the only.
- 45:45Speaker 6: Positive thing I can say.
- 45:46Speaker 9: They've been snake bit teams are shooting like thirty seven
- 45:48Speaker 9: percent from three generally speaking, that returns more to the
- 45:51Speaker 9: average they've you know, the three point regression could help them.
- 45:54Speaker 9: But this is just a team that I feel like
- 45:56Speaker 9: no lead is safe. They can play up or play
- 45:59Speaker 9: down to just about anybody. And this hypothetical, they've made
- 46:01Speaker 9: it all the way to the final four. That's a
- 46:03Speaker 9: lot of them playing up. So I think you know
- 46:05Speaker 9: that it strikes midnight on a Cinderella season for the
- 46:07Speaker 9: Tigers Auburn.
- 46:11Speaker 5: But Auburn's in pre fall mode right now.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Not trustworthy, neither of the Zori, neither as Uc I
- 46:20Speaker 4: mean any of those. I mean it would be it
- 46:21Speaker 4: would actually be an entertaining pon for because you never
- 46:23Speaker 4: know what you're gonna get with any of that.
- 46:24Speaker 9: I mean, if we knew we were getting with Keyshawn
- 46:26Speaker 9: Hall and like what's going on with that situation, Auburn
- 46:29Speaker 9: at their best, I think you can make the argument
- 46:31Speaker 9: I've always liked.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Peediford ironically Kish Hall, you see f guy. So we'd
- 46:36Speaker 1: have that storyline.
- 46:38Speaker 4: Although the coaching is that's where Auburn is going to
- 46:43Speaker 4: be at a disadvantage because I think Stephen Pearl might
- 46:46Speaker 4: be an overse head.
- 46:47Speaker 3: This and Bruce pro leaving to get into politics was
- 46:51Speaker 3: such a crazy move. What is with Auburn coaches and
- 46:55Speaker 3: leaving to get into politics. I don't understand.
- 46:58Speaker 1: It's something about the deep out that just gets here,
- 47:01Speaker 1: rived up and ready to go. Mike Calvaries, Ladies and gentlemen,
- 47:04Speaker 1: Big Bets on Campus make sure that if you have
- 47:06Speaker 1: not checked out that great podcast yet, this is the
- 47:09Speaker 1: time of year to do it. Mike, thanks so much
- 47:13Speaker 1: and amazing you did this all while you were sleeping.
- 47:16Speaker 1: This was all done in a sleep state. Amazing. That's
- 47:20Speaker 1: off to you, my friend.
- 47:21Speaker 9: The key record from your basement can jump out of
