- 0:00Speaker 1: Care We fruit exports from New Zealand reached an all
- 0:02Speaker 1: time high three point one billion dollars for the year
- 0:05Speaker 1: in August this year. That's up five hundred and twenty
- 0:07Speaker 1: one million dollars or twenty percent. Gold carew We fruit
- 0:10Speaker 1: made the biggest contribution exports, valued at two point four billion,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a twenty four percent increase. Evan Hayward is the Motsueka
- 0:17Speaker 1: Kiwi fruit and apple grower. He's with me live this morning.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Get a Evan warning. Ryan, Thanks for being with me.
- 0:23Speaker 1: So what's going good for you?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I like you said, the gold key fruit is going
- 0:28Speaker 2: well on the back of a couple of good years
- 0:31Speaker 2: now and volumes and quality have been outstanding.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So we do in China is where we send our
- 0:37Speaker 1: gold buy and large. Isn't it.
- 0:40Speaker 2: All over the world? Rhyme by your China's probably the
- 0:43Speaker 2: biggest market and also won of the highest paying markets.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What's the deal with red? What are you doing there?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got three hectes red in the ground. We'll
- 0:55Speaker 2: have our first commercial crop next year. So it's early days,
- 0:59Speaker 2: but the market is definitely keen on the red flesh
- 1:03Speaker 2: Q fruit variety. So it's early days, but demands there,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and we just need to learn how to grow this properly.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And yeah, I think there's a good potential in future
- 1:14Speaker 2: for a red flesh variety in the market.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I haven't tried it. Does it taste any different? What
- 1:18Speaker 1: does it taste like?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got some some tropical flavors and it is
- 1:23Speaker 2: quite different from the green and red green and gold
- 1:26Speaker 2: that most people are used to.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Is that a higher value the red, Yes.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It is, but bear in mind the volumes are very small,
- 1:36Speaker 2: so there's probably some scarcity value built into that price
- 1:39Speaker 2: at the moment.
- 1:40Speaker 1: How hard is it to grow? I guess you're finding.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Out, yes we are, but early indications that is a
- 1:48Speaker 2: little bit more difficult to grow than both the green
- 1:51Speaker 2: and the gold. This particular variety ruby red is a
- 1:56Speaker 2: little bit smaller and it can blemish quite quite easily
- 1:59Speaker 2: from you from one damage and one thing and another.
- 2:02Speaker 2: So yeah, it's got some some agronomical issues there, agronomy
- 2:08Speaker 2: issues there that that gruss will need to learn and
- 2:12Speaker 2: and you know, get better at.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to trying it. Evan, great to have
