- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is. Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 22nd of April. It's Easter Tuesday.
- 0:18Is that a thing? Easter Tuesday?
- 0:19Well, it should be a thing. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:22You might even have a little bit of time off attached to the back
- 0:26of the Easter long weekend. If that's you friends.
- 0:29Happy holidays, that's me. So I am enjoying a rather quiet
- 0:33week compared to the norm, which is just sensational.
- 0:38And this week we are going to be finishing John.
- 0:41Well, today we will finish John. John is the one gospel that has
- 0:46an epilogue. It has a final chapter that
- 0:48speaks about things after the main event of Jesus and his
- 0:52resurrection. And as if that's not enough
- 0:55coolness for one week, well, tomorrow we are going to dive
- 0:59into the very impressive book of Philemon, which goes for a
- 1:04chapter. So we will knock that off in one
- 1:06day and then we will move into the letters of Peter, first and
- 1:11second Peter, which we will love before, before we dive into
- 1:15Hebrews. Oh, the treasure trove of
- 1:18glorious truth in Hebrews. So we have got so much good
- 1:22stuff coming your way. But today we get to wrap up this
- 1:27gorgeous, this wonderful, this life changing gospel of John as
- 1:32we hear John write about Jesus, as he appears to the other
- 1:37disciples in that period after his resurrection and before his
- 1:41ascension. So, friends, settle in one more
- 1:44time with John as he reflects on this incredible time of his
- 1:49life, as he witnessed Jesus going about his earthly ministry
- 1:54first hand and then recorded it for you and for me so that we
- 1:59would believe this to be true. So let us read together,
- 2:03friends, the final chapter, John chapter 21.
- 2:17Later Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of
- 2:21Galilee. This is how it happened.
- 2:24Several of the disciples were there.
- 2:26Simon Peter Thomas nicknamed the twin Nathaniel from Cana in
- 2:31Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples.
- 2:36Simon Peter said, I'm going fishing.
- 2:39Welcome too, they all said. So they went out in the boat,
- 2:43but they caught nothing all night.
- 2:46At dawn, Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples
- 2:51couldn't see who he was. He called out, fellas, have you
- 2:55caught any fish? No, they replied.
- 2:59Then he said, throw out your net on the right hand side of the
- 3:03boat and you'll get some. So they did and they couldn't
- 3:08haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.
- 3:12Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, it's the Lord.
- 3:17When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his
- 3:20tunic, for he had stripped for work, jumped into the water and
- 3:24headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat
- 3:27and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about
- 3:30100 yards from shore when they got there.
- 3:33They found breakfast waiting for them, fish cooking over a
- 3:37charcoaled fire, and some bread. Bring some fish you've just
- 3:41caught, Jesus said. Sir.
- 3:43Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore.
- 3:46There were 153 large fish and yet the net hadn't torn.
- 3:53Now come and have some breakfast, Jesus said.
- 3:56None of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you?
- 4:00They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread
- 4:04and the fish. This was the third time Jesus
- 4:07had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from
- 4:10the dead. After breakfast, Jesus asked
- 4:13Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?
- 4:20Yes, Lord, Peter replied, you know I love you.
- 4:24Then feed my lambs, Jesus told him.
- 4:28Jesus repeated the question, Simon son of John, do you love
- 4:33me? Yes, Lord Peter said, you know I
- 4:36love you, then take care of my sheep 1/3 time.
- 4:41He asked him, Simon, son of John, do you love me?
- 4:47Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question 1/3 time.
- 4:51He said, Lord you know everything, you know that I love
- 4:55you. Jesus said, then feed my sheep.
- 5:01I tell you the truth, when you were young you were able to do
- 5:05as you liked. You dressed yourself and went
- 5:07wherever you wanted to go. But when you were old, you will
- 5:12stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take
- 5:15you where you don't want to go. Jesus said this to let him know
- 5:21by what kind of death he would glorify God.
- 5:24Then Jesus told him, Follow me. Peter turned around and saw
- 5:31behind them the disciple Jesus loved, the one who had leaned
- 5:34over to Jesus during supper and asked the Lord, Who will betray
- 5:38you? Peter asked Jesus.
- 5:41What about him? Lord Jesus replied, If I want
- 5:45him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?
- 5:50As for you, follow me. So the rumours spread among the
- 5:54community of believers that this disciple wouldn't die.
- 5:58But that isn't what Jesus said at all.
- 6:01He only said, if I want him to remain alive until I return,
- 6:05what is that to you? This disciple is the one who
- 6:11testifies to these events and has recorded them here, and we
- 6:15know that his account of these things is accurate.
- 6:20Jesus also did many other things.
- 6:23If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could
- 6:27not contain the books that would be written.
- 6:40Ah Lord, here we are 2000 some years later, and your message
- 6:47and your community has changed each one of our lives.
- 6:51Jesus, thank you for the gift of your story, for that gospel
- 6:56message that the Father sent you here to preach so that we would
- 7:01know who you are and we would know your love for us.
- 7:05And that we would see this act of sacrifice and love so that we
- 7:09would know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are acceptable to
- 7:15You because of what you have done for us.
- 7:19So here we stand, your disciples spread across the world with our
- 7:24arms open wide. With grateful hearts.
- 7:28We worship you, our risen Lord and our King.
- 7:33And we will spend our lives in service and worship of you.
- 7:39So accept our lives as an offering to you.
- 7:41Use us, shape us, lead us, so that we can magnify your
- 7:47glorious name with every breath that we draw in.
- 7:52We love you and we pray all these things in your name,
- 7:56Jesus, Amen.
