- 0:00In the midst of a lush, vibrant green expanse
- 0:03located in a quaint rural stretch of Essex, close to
- 0:08the eastern shores of England, there once resided
- 0:12an imposing, gothic -inspired brick edifice known as
- 0:18Borley Rectory. This architectural marvel erected
- 0:22in the year 1863 under the guidance of Reverend Henry
- 0:27Dawson Ellis Bull soon became the cherished
- 0:31dwelling for him and his extensive family of
- 0:35fourteen. The plot of land upon which
- 0:38this rectory was constructed, born enigmatic
- 0:42in lengthy history, stretching back well before
- 0:46its foundations were laid. It
- 0:48is believed that the site was once graced by a
- 0:53monastery and the 14th century, a place shrouded
- 0:58in dark allure. Local folklore whispers of a
- 1:03tragic love story that unfolded within this
- 1:06historical backdrop, a monk residing in the monastery
- 1:11reportedly felt deeply in love with a nun from a
- 1:16neighboring convent. Their love, forbidden in
- 1:20clandestine, blossomed in secret until their affair
- 1:25was tragically uncovered. The
- 1:27aftermath was grim. The monk faced a dire fate
- 1:32being executed by Hengie at the exact location where
- 1:38Borley Rectory would later stand as for the nun. Her
- 1:43punishment was equally harsh and more narrowing as she
- 1:49was condemned to a living tomb. Sealed
- 1:53alive within the convent walls, it is against the
- 1:58backdrop of love, betrayal and tragedy that the
- 2:03spectral occurrences at Borley Rectory are believed
- 2:07to have originated, casting a long shadow over the
- 2:12property. These chilling tales and witnessed
- 2:15apparitions have catapulted Borley Rectory into the
- 2:20halls of paranormal history, marking it as one of the
- 2:25globe's most infamously haunted locations, almost
- 2:30immediately after Henry Bowle and his family made
- 2:33the estate their home. They found themselves engulfed in
- 2:38a barrage of mysterious occurrences. The
- 2:42onset was marked by inexplicable sounds,
- 2:46footsteps echoing in empty corridors, the persistent
- 2:51murmur of flowing water where there should be none,
- 2:56disembodied voices whispering in the dead of night,
- 3:01bells chiming, dependently, despite severed connections
- 3:07and objects that seem to move of their own volition.
- 3:13However, these initial oddities
- 3:15quickly intensified in frequency. The
- 3:20children, particularly vulnerable and perceptive,
- 3:24reported the reoccurring vision of a sinister,
- 3:29ghostly nun wandering premises. This
- 3:33eerie figure was in a fleeting glimpse. It
- 3:38manifested itself repeatedly, observed by multiple members
- 3:43of the Bowle family. Among the children, the youngest
- 3:49daughter, Ethel, bore the brunt of the spectral
- 3:53harassment. She was subjected to physical
- 3:56assaults by an invisible assailant. Enduring
- 4:01pushes, slaps, it was such force they left behind
- 4:07physical evidence of her encounters. Adding
- 4:12to the atmosphere of dread was the legend of a
- 4:16ghostly carriage, pulled by horses, and driven by two
- 4:22headless specters. These specters raced through the
- 4:27surrounding area with reckless abandon. This
- 4:31and other chilling encounters persisted, weaving
- 4:35in tapestry that seemed to grow more complex with
- 4:39time, and during well past the death of Henry Bowle
- 4:44in 1892. When he passed the property onto
- 4:49his son, Harry Bowle, the legacy of unsettling
- 4:54phenomena, thus continued. During
- 4:59Harry Bowle's tenure, the eerie manifestations at the
- 5:03estate not only persisted, but seemed to intensify,
- 5:08with numerous bizarre occurrences recorded. On
- 5:13a particularly unsettling day, while Harry was
- 5:17tending to his garden, his dog suddenly erupted into a
- 5:22frenzy of barks, displaying a mix of terror and
- 5:28confusion, hiding behind a tree for reasons that
- 5:33weren't immediately apparent. Upon
- 5:35investigating the cause of his dog's distress, Harry
- 5:40reported a chilling sight, a headless figure emerging
- 5:46from behind the voyage, proceeding to board a
- 5:50phantom carriage that eerily glided to silence. This
- 5:57was not a solitary encounter. Harry
- 6:01experienced several such unnerving incidents with the
- 6:05ghostly carriage, which appeared to race by, only
- 6:09to dissolve into thin air moments later. Amidst
- 6:15these spectral happenings, the figure of the ghostly
- 6:19nun remained constant. She was often observed in full
- 6:24daylight, roaming the grounds, and unsettlingly
- 6:29peering through windows. On numerous occasions, Harry
- 6:34and his family's dining experiences were interrupted
- 6:39by the unwelcomed side of her face, often gazing in
- 6:44through the window. An occurrence that became so
- 6:49frequent and disturbing that Harry eventually took
- 6:53measures to break up the dining room window in an
- 6:58attempt to shield his family from her intrusive
- 7:01stares. These ongoing supernatural events
- 7:05under Harry's watch contributed to a thickening
- 7:09atmosphere of terror. Following
- 7:12Harry Bull's death in 1927, the rectory found itself
- 7:17draped in silence, temporarily forsaken until
- 7:22Reverend Guy Erick Smith and his wife decided to
- 7:27call it their home. No sooner had they unpacked
- 7:31their belongings than they found themselves plunged
- 7:35into a realm of unexplained phenomena, phenomena that
- 7:40defied rational explanation. Their
- 7:44new abode seemed to pulsate with a life of its own,
- 7:49illuminated by wandering orbs of light that danced
- 7:53through the darkness, and haunted by the spectral
- 7:57vision of a nun whose presence was as persistent
- 8:02as it was unsettling. The ghostly carriage with its
- 8:07headless drivers continued its nocturnal journeys,
- 8:12accompanied by shadowy figures that flitted just
- 8:16beyond the corner of one's eye. The
- 8:20air was often pierced by the echo of footsteps and
- 8:24the mournful tolling of bells that rang from
- 8:28nowhere. The most chilling discovery,
- 8:32however, came at the hands of Smith's wife during an
- 8:36ordinary day of household chores, hidden within the
- 8:40depths of an old cupboard. Wrapped
- 8:42in a forgotten paper package, she stumbled upon
- 8:46a discovery that sent shivers down her spine, a
- 8:50human skull, its empty sockets seemingly staring
- 8:54back at her. This macabre find was soon
- 8:58accompanied by auditory disturbances. Horse
- 9:02whispers filled the air in the sound of heavy
- 9:05footsteps resonated through the empty halls, creating
- 9:10an atmosphere thick with tension and unanswered
- 9:14questions. Reverend Smith found himself
- 9:17compelled to arm himself with a stick as he moved
- 9:22about his own home, a testament to the unsettling
- 9:25presence that seemed to stalk them from the
- 9:28shadows. Driven to the brink of insanity
- 9:31by these chilling experiences, the Smiths
- 9:35reached out to the daily mirror in 1929, desperate
- 9:40for answers. The newspaper responded by
- 9:44dispatching a man named Harry Price, a renowned
- 9:48paranormal researcher, along with his team. They
- 9:52were tasked with unraveling the secrets that lay hidden
- 9:55within the walls of the Bordly Rectory, a mission
- 9:59that promised to delve deep into the unknown. Shortly
- 10:04after his arrival at Bordly Rectory, Harry Price found
- 10:08himself quickly immersed in the intense paranormal
- 10:12activities that seemed to permeate out of nowhere.
- 10:17Throughout his investigation, Price
- 10:19documented witnessing several unexplainable events that
- 10:23defied logic. Objects were observed levitating and
- 10:28hurling through the air, propelled by something that
- 10:33they couldn't see, while cryptic messages eerily
- 10:37formed on mirrors, seemingly tapped out by ghostly
- 10:43fingers. In a particularly chilling
- 10:46incident, Price and his assistant watched in
- 10:49disbelief as a glass candlestick floated ominously
- 10:53before them, only to violently shatter against
- 10:57the wall, sending a cascade of glass fragments
- 11:01scattering in all directions. Moreover,
- 11:07Price reported encounters with the spectral figures
- 11:10that had become almost legendary at Bordly Rectory.
- 11:14He claimed to have seen the
- 11:15haunting visage of the nun, headless coach drivers
- 11:19eerily navigating the night, and even the ghost of
- 11:24Henry Boll himself looming within the shadow -filled
- 11:29corridors. They even purported to capture
- 11:32photographic evidence of an apparition, adding a
- 11:36tangible, albeit ghostly chapter to the Rectory's
- 11:41story history. However, it's worth noting that many
- 11:45of the extraordinary phenomena reported by Price
- 11:50was not collaborated by the experiences of the Smiths,
- 11:54leading to skepticism about the veracity of some
- 11:58events. Despite this, the Smiths had
- 12:01encountered enough unexplained disturbances to
- 12:05make the decision to leave the Rectory in 1929, less
- 12:10than a year after they had made it their home. Price's
- 12:13detailed accounts of the bizarre occurrences at
- 12:16Bordly Rectory were widely publicized, catapulting the
- 12:21story into the realm of public fascination and
- 12:24debate. This was the moment that the
- 12:27haunting of Bordly Rectory transcended mere local
- 12:30folklore to become a captivating mystery that
- 12:34captured the imagination of the wider public, imbuing
- 12:39the Rectory with a mystique that continues to intrigue
- 12:43and baffle to this day. Following
- 12:46Harry Price's investigation, which earned the property
- 12:50the title of the most haunted house in England,
- 12:55the residents welcomed its new occupants. In
- 12:581930, the incoming family comprised of Lionel Foister,
- 13:05a relative of the initial proprietor Henry Bull,
- 13:09alongside his wife Mary Ann, and their adopted
- 13:13daughter Adelaide. The transition into their new
- 13:17home was anything but ordinary, as it seemed that
- 13:21they also took possession of its lingering spectral
- 13:24residence, inheriting a legacy of encounters that
- 13:30would defy explanation once again. The
- 13:34foisters were plunged into a realm of mysterious
- 13:37occurrences that seemed to intensify with time. Their
- 13:42daily lives were interrupted by an array of inexplicable
- 13:46events that would test the skepticism of even the
- 13:50staunchest outer. Objects with minds of their own
- 13:54would be thrown through the air. Rocks,
- 13:57glasses, and bottles quickly became projectiles used by
- 14:03unseen forces. Windows shattered spontaneously, as
- 14:08if struck by invisible stones, while doors
- 14:11developed wills of their own, locking and unlocking,
- 14:16and a whimsical dance that left the family often
- 14:19stranded or intrusively barred from their own
- 14:22rooms. The household's furniture seemed
- 14:25to partake in a silent conspiracy, shifting
- 14:29positions when no one was watching, contributing to
- 14:32the discerning atmosphere that pervaded the estate.
- 14:36Objects would mysteriously vanish as
- 14:38well, only to reappear in the most unlikely places,
- 14:44as if the house itself was playing a macabre game of
- 14:47hide and seek with the living. Adding
- 14:51to the eerie ambience were once again the inexplicable
- 14:55sounds of non -existent ringing bells, and these
- 15:00were accompanied by unsettling sounds of heavy
- 15:04breathing by no one that could be seen. Footsteps
- 15:09echoed in the halls, which again suggested the presence
- 15:13of unseen visitors, visitors that were treading the
- 15:17corridors alongside the living. Perhaps
- 15:21the most chilling aspect of the haunting was the
- 15:24apparent fixation of the malevolent presence on Mary
- 15:28Ann. This unseen force seemed to
- 15:30single her out for torment more than anyone else in
- 15:34the household. On numerous occasions, she
- 15:38experienced the sensation being pushed, poked, and
- 15:43even slapped. Objects would be hurled directly at
- 15:48her, making her the unfortunate focus of these
- 15:52paranormal attacks. In one particularly harrowing
- 15:56incident, Mary Ann woke up in the dead of night, only
- 16:01to find herself struggling to breathe under the
- 16:04oppressive weight of a mattress, as if the entity
- 16:10was attempting to suffocate her in her own bed.
- 16:14Following this terrifying event, the
- 16:18walls of the rectory began to bear cryptic messages,
- 16:22phrases like, Mary Ann, please help. And
- 16:28Mary Ann, light mass prayers, began appearing
- 16:32mysteriously. There were also moments when she
- 16:36was violently thrown from her bed or pinned down by
- 16:41the invisible oppressor. Experiences
- 16:45so disturbing that they convinced foister to
- 16:49undertake exorcisms on two separate occasions.
- 16:53Unfortunately though, these attempts would
- 16:56not only fail, but seem to anger the spirit even
- 17:01further, resulting in a frenzy of fist -sized stones
- 17:06being thrown at it. Adding yet another layer, Mary Ann
- 17:11reported sightings of the spectral figure of Bol,
- 17:16suggesting his lingering presence still was there
- 17:20within the confines of the rectory. Numerous
- 17:25paranormal investigators, captivated by the
- 17:28increasingly famous tale, hypothesized that the
- 17:32unsettling poltergeist manifestations might have
- 17:36been emanating from Mary Ann, or perhaps their
- 17:39daughter. Hitting down the true source,
- 17:42however, remained an elusive task, as the foisters
- 17:47vacated the property in 1935. Price
- 17:52seized the moment to re -enter the scene, eager to
- 17:56delve deeper into the mysteries that morally
- 17:59rectory seemed to jealously guard. Armed
- 18:03with the latest in ghost hunting technology and a
- 18:07keen sense of determination, Price embarked on an
- 18:11extensive recruitment drive, gathering a diverse group
- 18:15of 48 individuals. Together, they were to join him in
- 18:20his investigative quest, taking turns to stay
- 18:24overnight at the haunted premises, each one hoping
- 18:29to witness firsthand peculiar occurrences that
- 18:33had captured the attention of the supernatural
- 18:36community. Price's ambition didn't stop there.
- 18:41He envisioned spending an
- 18:43entire year within the walls of the rectory to
- 18:46thoroughly document its myriad of mysteries. This
- 18:51wasn't just another ghost hunting expedition. It
- 18:55was a meticulously planned operation aimed at peeling
- 18:59back the layers of secrecy that shrouded the house
- 19:02with the mix of anticipation and a touch of
- 19:07the unknown. Price and his team prepared to
- 19:10embark on what promised to be an unprecedented
- 19:13exploration of the supernatural, a venture
- 19:18brimming with the potential to unlock the secrets of
- 19:22one of the most hauntingly captivating locations known
- 19:26throughout the duration of their year -long
- 19:29investigation at the property. The
- 19:32team reported a series of extraordinary findings, among
- 19:37which a particularly compelling seance conducted
- 19:41one evening stands out. In this session, the psychic
- 19:45medium, Helen Glanville, allegedly established
- 19:49communication with a spirit who introduced itself as
- 19:54Mary Larie. This spirit claimed to pass life
- 19:58as a nun in France. Before making the life -altering
- 20:01decision to leave her convent, journey to England,
- 20:06and enter into marriage with a wealthy individual
- 20:10named Henry Waldegrave. Tragically,
- 20:14the tale took a dark turn, with Mary Larie recounting
- 20:18how she was brutally strangled by her husband
- 20:20and her body disgracefully abandoned in the cellar of
- 20:27the rectory. It was Mary's spirit according
- 20:30to the narrative that sought out Mary Ann,
- 20:34pleading for assistance from beyond the grave. In
- 20:39a subsequent chilling encounter, Glanville made
- 20:42contact with another spirit, this one identifying itself
- 20:47as Sunne Emra. Displaying a more ominous intent, it
- 20:53issued a dire prophecy, declaring its plan to set
- 20:57the entire structure ablaze in 1938, with the aftermath
- 21:03revealing the remains of a murdered man amidst the
- 21:07ruins. In addition to these startling
- 21:10communications, the team encountered frequent
- 21:13poltergeist activities, areas of intense, unexplainable
- 21:18cold, bizarre non -human footprints in the snow, and
- 21:24purported sightings of the ghostly nun to become a
- 21:27figure of intrigue, while stedelving into poorly
- 21:31rectory's past. Taking on the role of chronicler,
- 21:36Christ meticulously documented these
- 21:38investigations, their findings, and the haunting
- 21:42tales woven into the fabric of the rectory. The
- 21:47culmination of this exhaustive research was
- 21:50presented to the public in two volumes, the most
- 21:55haunted house in England, 1940, and the end of
- 22:00Borley Rectory in 1946, and what could only be
- 22:05described as a peculiar twist of fate, closely
- 22:08aligning with the ominous prediction made by the
- 22:11spirit they had contacted the year 1939 unfolded with
- 22:17a startling incident. The Borley Rectory's new
- 22:21proprietor, Captain W. H. Grexon, accidentally dropped
- 22:26an oil lamp, igniting a fierce blaze that swept
- 22:30through the structure, resulting in furnace
- 22:33severely damaged the manor, leaving it a charged shell
- 22:38of its former glory in the aftermath during an
- 22:43exploration in 1943. Christ ventured into the remnants
- 22:47of the cellar and amidst the debris, he discovered
- 22:52what he believed to be the remains of a young woman.
- 22:57This claim sparked controversy
- 22:59with some skeptics questioning the human origin
- 23:02of these remains, following the fire, an array of
- 23:07occurrences were reported in the vicinity of the now
- 23:10abandoned and fire scarred rectory. Residents
- 23:14and visitors spoke of hearing an explicable
- 23:17ghostly laughter echoing through the night,
- 23:21witnessing eerie lights with no discernible source, and
- 23:26encountering frequent malfunctions of electrical
- 23:29devices. Moreover, the spectral figure of the
- 23:33Nun who had become a haunting staple of the
- 23:36Borley Lore was sited with unsettling regularity.
- 23:42Additional reports came from
- 23:43individuals, including World War II soldiers stationed
- 23:47nearby, who experienced the sensation of unseen
- 23:51assailants hurling stones at them. These
- 23:55mysterious events persisted until the rectory met its
- 23:58ultimate fate, being demolished in 1944. However,
- 24:05the demolition did not mark the end. Rather,
- 24:10it seemed to dilute the frequency and intensity of
- 24:13paranormal phenomena. As the years progressed,
- 24:17leading up to Harry Price's death in 1948, the tales
- 24:22of Borley Rector's haunted legacy gradually receded
- 24:25into the shadows of history, the once vivid
- 24:29accounts of supernatural occurrences and ghostly
- 24:32sightings transitioned into whispered legends. This
- 24:37shift consigned Borley Rector and its ghostly
- 24:40inhabitants to the realm of folklore, transforming it
- 24:45into a haunting echo of the past. In
- 24:49the years that followed since its peak of
- 24:51notoriety, the tale of a haunted Borley Rector became
- 24:56embroiled in controversy, attracting the level of
- 24:59scrutiny that far exceeded expectations. Harry
- 25:04Price's foundational report, once a cornerstone of
- 25:08paranormal literature, found itself under the critical
- 25:12microscope of the Society for Psychical Research, or
- 25:17SPR, upon its release. This organization, steeped in
- 25:23investigations of the supernatural, raised doubts
- 25:26about the authenticity of the sightings reported by
- 25:29Price. They poised that a significant
- 25:32number of these incidents could be attributed to
- 25:36natural explanations, or could have been overly
- 25:39dramatized, or were outright fabrications crafted by
- 25:44Price himself. The skepticism surrounding
- 25:48Price's work intensified notably after his passing,
- 25:52when a daily male journalist who had
- 25:54accompanied Price during his explorations at the Rectory
- 25:58stepped forward with allegations that cast a
- 26:02shadow over the entirety of the findings, these
- 26:06allegations accused Price of concocting the entire
- 26:09narrative. This claim was compounded by an
- 26:14even more startling revelation from Marianne
- 26:17Forster, a central figure in the Borley Rectory saga,
- 26:22who would later confess that the haunting that they
- 26:24had experienced was a fabrication. The
- 26:29narrative took yet another twist with the publication
- 26:32of a book, 2000, by Louis Mayerling. Boldly
- 26:38titled, We Faked the Ghosts of Borley Rectory,
- 26:43Mayerling's work delves into the heart of the
- 26:46controversy, suggesting that the stories of the haunting
- 26:49that had captivated the public were the result of
- 26:53elaborate deceptions by the bulls, the foyers, Harry
- 26:58Price, and his investigative team. According
- 27:02to this account, these individuals were not the
- 27:05honest secrets of truth they claimed to be, but
- 27:09rather skilled illusionists and storytellers weaving a
- 27:15complex web of ghostly tales that blurred the
- 27:19lines between reality and the supernatural. This
- 27:23perspective cast the Borley Rectory in a new light,
- 27:27suggesting that its legacy may be more about the
- 27:30human penchant for crafting narratives that captivate
- 27:34and intrigue rather than tangible encounters, the
- 27:39supernatural realm. Despite this whirling vortex of
- 27:43skepticism, it's fascinating to observe that a
- 27:46substantial number of individuals still staunchly
- 27:50stand behind the authenticity of the Borley
- 27:52Rectory case. It strikes one as peculiar,
- 27:57almost beyond belief, that such a diverse group could
- 28:01mastermind an elaborate hoax, spanning several
- 28:05decades with such precision. Numerous
- 28:09witnesses have passionately contended that the events
- 28:13witnessed could not have been the product of mere
- 28:16trickery, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative.
- 28:21This conviction among many has
- 28:23ensured that the eerie saga of Borley Rectory continues
- 28:27to captivate and bewitch minds, securing its place
- 28:33as a timeless haunting narrative that ignites
- 28:37fervent discussions, debates, even to this day. But
- 28:43the question still looms large, what truly unfolded
- 28:47within those walls. Was there any substance to the
- 28:51tales? Or are we merely chasing
- 28:54shadows of a long -standing urban myth meticulously
- 28:59woven by cunning fabricators? The
- 29:04truth is up to you to decide. With
- 29:07the principal characters and investigators of these
- 29:11mysterious events long past, in the Rectory itself
- 29:15erased from the physical world, we find ourselves in
- 29:20a snared web of speculation. It
- 29:25appears that the tale of Borley Rectory is destined
- 29:28to hover in the realms of the unknown, a ghostly
- 29:32whisper from the past that continues to puzzle and
- 29:37mesmerize those who dare to delve into its depths.
