- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Kenny Wallace Show
- 0:04brought to you by Jags, the leader in high performance
- 0:09aftermarket car parts. Remember to go to jags.com for
- 0:14everything you need to fix your vehicles up.
- 0:19I'm really excited because basically this is the first show
- 0:23of the year and racing has started.
- 0:26They're down there in Daytona for the Daytona 500 and the big
- 0:31story in the garage area is this one.
- 0:36Why is our seven time champion? Why is Jimmie Johnson putting
- 0:42himself through so much pain? As they say in AM debate radio?
- 0:49You know, when you're listening to radio, you're just listening.
- 0:52So let me paint the picture for you.
- 0:58I don't know why that struck me so funny.
- 1:00I guess I I grew up on KMOX radio right here in Saint Louis
- 1:05and I love AM radio. It's so much fun.
- 1:08So Jimmy Johnson on Thursday night before the Daytona 500
- 1:14seven time champ, certainly going to have a provisional or
- 1:18something because he's our seven time NASCAR champion.
- 1:22He's right there with Dale Earnhardt senior and Richard
- 1:25Petty. Jimmie Johnson is great.
- 1:28Like, wow. But here's where the story gets
- 1:32a little wild. All right, Jimmie Johnson leaves
- 1:37NASCAR, right, he leaves. And around this time Jimmie's
- 1:42like, I'm moving out West. I need to get away from
- 1:46Charlotte, NC. I've talked to my crew chief,
- 1:49Chad Canal. So I've talked to my owner, Rick
- 1:52Hendrick. And they're like, OK, Jimmy, you
- 1:55can move out West, away from the team.
- 1:57And, you know, just make sure you check in.
- 2:00You're part of the meeting, so you know, the herminator.
- 2:03Now let me throw my disclaimer out there.
- 2:05This is all this is all Kenny Wallace thinking.
- 2:09And you know, there's an old, there's an old saying.
- 2:12I have a memory like an elephant.
- 2:15Oh, you remember, do you? Yes, I remember Jimmie Johnson
- 2:19towards the end of his NASCAR career, take one.
- 2:23Meaning the first time he goes out on the West Coast, wants to
- 2:27get away, be mentally strong. He's out there, he's riding
- 2:30trail bikes. He's doing the skiing.
- 2:33You know, I I'm mentally clear. I'm.
- 2:35I'm mentally strong and I get it.
- 2:39I mean, that's the same reason I moved to St.
- 2:42Louis, MO, to get away from everything being so toxic in
- 2:46North Carolina. So Jimmie Johnson inevitably
- 2:52quits, NASCAR quits it. I mean, that's just the way it
- 2:56is. That's all there is to it.
- 2:57He quit. He he doesn't have anything to
- 2:59do with Hendrick anymore. The team that he won those 7
- 3:03championships, he doesn't have any executive decisions.
- 3:06He's just flat ass gone. Jimmie Johnson is gone from
- 3:11NASCAR. He's gone from Rick Hendrick, so
- 3:15he goes IndyCar racing. Now when he's IndyCar racing,
- 3:19he's got this big sponsor called Carvana, right where they make
- 3:24you an offer for your vehicle. They bring a truck to your
- 3:27house, they load your vehicle up, and that's Carvana.
- 3:30Carvana, however you want to say it, respond right here.
- 3:34Carvana, Carvana. You say potato, I say potato.
- 3:39Anyway, great sponsor. So Jimmie Johnson runs two years
- 3:43of IndyCar racing, right? OK, he has a good race or so.
- 3:48But this is, this is Jimmie Johnson, the West Coast kid.
- 3:52You know, Travis Pastrana is his buddy.
- 3:56So he's kind of got that X Games in him.
- 3:58I'm going to run NASCAR. I'm going to run in the car.
- 4:01You know, I'm going to golf. I'm going to Jimmie Johnson's
- 4:05going to air it out, right. He's a West Coast kid.
- 4:08So I get it. I get that mentality.
- 4:11But Indy cars proved to be a little difficult, right?
- 4:15Let's he's 48 now. Let's back it up.
- 4:18You know, he goes IndyCar racing, what, 44 years old?
- 4:23Those cars pull a lot of G forces.
- 4:26You know, this is Kenny saying this, you know, kind of hard to,
- 4:29once you get in your mid 40s, kind of hard to teaching an old
- 4:32dog new tricks. Now I'd like what Tony Stewart's
- 4:36doing because you're just going drag racing straight you know
- 4:39you're done 6 seconds and and that's that's everything right.
- 4:42Really 3 seconds. So it doesn't go very good for
- 4:47Jimmy but we're going to give Jimmy a break because he's a
- 4:49seven time champion and let's make this very clear.
- 4:54Jimmy Johnson's phone number right here, and he's a friend of
- 4:57mine and he and Jimmy Johnson will come on, Kenny.
- 5:00Conversation. Just.
- 5:02I'm waiting for the desk to settle with Jimmy.
- 5:04He's got a lot going on. He's he's he's living overseas.
- 5:07He's been out to the West Coast. Jimmy Jimmy's got a lot going
- 5:11on. All right, Now that I've told
- 5:14you all that, what did that take?
- 5:16Two minutes. 3 minutes. The question begs this, why in
- 5:22the hell at 48 years old A7 time champion, he's done it all.
- 5:27I know he's a racer. I get that.
- 5:30Look, both hands up. Stop right there.
- 5:33Hey Herman, why are you racing at 60 years old?
- 5:36Well, because I realized that retirement and the the word
- 5:40content is not in my vocabulary. So I get it.
- 5:44Jimmy's a gamer. He wants to compete.
- 5:48But that's not all. I'm going to tell you right now
- 5:51why Jimmie Johnson came back to NASCAR.
- 5:55So Thursday night for the dual 150's Jimmie Johnson almost was
- 6:04was within 2 football fields of not making the Daytona 500.
- 6:10That's why I'm doing this show so I I can see Charlie right
- 6:14now. What's the headlines of this
- 6:16show going to be? Our seven time champion was just
- 6:21happy to make a race. What?
- 6:26That's the truth. That's the hard, cold facts of
- 6:30my dear friend Jimmy Johnson. This is an incredible
- 6:34conversation. I mean, this is 1 where we're
- 6:37sitting at the bar, right? Jimmie Johnson is just happy to
- 6:41make the Daytona 500. How the hell did we get in this
- 6:46situation? Right.
- 6:48All right, so I'm going to tell you why Jimmy wants to be a car
- 6:55owner. So he's teaming up with Maury
- 6:57Gallagher, the owner of Allegiant Airlines, the CEO of
- 7:01Allegiant Airlines. You know, airplanes, commercial
- 7:04airliners, Maury Maurice Gallagher.
- 7:07However you want to say his name, Maury Gallagher, CEO of
- 7:12Allegiant Airlines, is worth $464 million.
- 7:17Jimmy, Now this is me. This is me.
- 7:19I'm putting words in Jimmy's mouth.
- 7:21Hey, Wallace, don't be putting words in my mouth, Jimmy.
- 7:24I'm not. I'm just once Jimmy Johnson's
- 7:28watching this, he's going to come on Kenny conversation.
- 7:31But if I'm dead on, he's going to go.
- 7:33Herman, you were right. So I didn't want to bother Jimmy
- 7:37right now because he's down there for the Daytona 500.
- 7:40So I'm taking a shot and I'm admitting it right here.
- 7:43I'm taking a shot. Except this is coffee, not beer.
- 7:47So Jimmie Johnson wants to be like Jeff Gordon.
- 7:53Jeff Gordon, second in charge at Hendrick, It's Rick Hendrick,
- 7:58then Jeff Gordon. All right.
- 8:00Jimmie Johnson wants to be like Tony Stewart, Stewart Haas
- 8:04Racing. Jimmie Johnson wants to be like
- 8:07Denny Hamlin, Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan, the owner of 23
- 8:13Racing. Jimmie Johnson wants to be like
- 8:17Brad Keselowski, Roush Fenway, RFK, right?
- 8:22I painted the picture for you. All these race car drivers are
- 8:26saying, you know the $100 million that I have right now in
- 8:29my bank account. Now I'm going to repeat this.
- 8:32This is going to be hard for you normal people.
- 8:36I'm normal too. It's going to be hard for you
- 8:38all to understand this one. If you have $100 million.
- 8:42Now, I'm inflated in it a lot. It's probably got 50 million.
- 8:46But let's say, let's say these drivers have $100 million when
- 8:51they retire. It's not enough.
- 8:55And here's why, because they live in extravagant lifestyle.
- 8:59Hey, send my Lear 40 over there to pick my wife up.
- 9:02Hey, I got four houses. I got one in Kennebunkport,
- 9:06Maine, because we're doing, my wife's a model.
- 9:09You know, I'm doing the New York scene.
- 9:10I'm doing the LA scene. You fly a jet out to LA, that's,
- 9:14that's 20 grand, boom like that. Especially if you're living over
- 9:18there in Charlotte. Imagine living in a different
- 9:21country. So all of a sudden you're
- 9:24spending 100 grand a month because you're wanting to go to
- 9:28Barrett Jackson, you're wanting to drink the wine.
- 9:31You want to hang out with Mr. Rick, right?
- 9:34I know how much money these guys spend.
- 9:37And it is like, whoa, OK, wow. So you're Jimmy Johnson, you're
- 9:46Jeff Gordon, you're Brad Keselowski, you're Denny Hamlin.
- 9:51And you're like, these guys are going through some money, like
- 9:54quick. And I'm 50 now and I, I got to
- 9:58do something. So after Jimmy Johnson does all
- 10:02this, he looks around, he goes, I need to, I want to be a car
- 10:05owner. I want to be a car owner.
- 10:07But Jimmy, to be a coroner with Maury Gallagher, the CEO of
- 10:12Allegiant Airlines. Jimmy wants to pair himself up
- 10:16with a real wealthy dude, right? Because he doesn't want this
- 10:19team to go down South. Jimmy's super smart.
- 10:21He looks around, he goes, man, what coroner's got a shit load
- 10:24of money? Charlie, don't.
- 10:25Don't beat that out. I fit that right word right in
- 10:28where it needs to be. So you look at, you know,
- 10:32Keselowski, you know that that's that.
- 10:34That's Roush Fenway. Lots of money.
- 10:37You know, you look at all these guys.
- 10:39You look at Denny Hamlin, who's got more money than than Michael
- 10:42Jordan. He's making $40 million a year
- 10:45on on selling tennis shoes, and he's retired.
- 10:47So Jimmy Johnson does it right. But here's why Jimmy Johnson's
- 10:52driving the race car. OK, let's take a look at that
- 10:56team. OK, so Maury Gallagher owns it.
- 11:01Richard Petty sold his shares back to Maury Gallagher.
- 11:05So Maury's the only owner. Jimmie Johnson comes in.
- 11:09Now there's two owners, right? The King, which I respect,
- 11:13immense. The King is just there, and he's
- 11:17making his money, doing his deal.
- 11:19But if you look at it, the King sold his shares back.
- 11:23So the King doesn't own Richard. Petty does not own anything with
- 11:27this team. He's just, he's just there and
- 11:29he's making money and he's doing things and he's awesome and he's
- 11:31the face of NASCAR. So when you look at Legacy Club
- 11:36is the name Legacy Club is owned by Maury Gallagher and now Jimmy
- 11:41Johnson. So Jimmy needs to either put 5
- 11:45or 10 million of his own money in or he's got to do what's
- 11:48right. So Jimmy, now this is where it
- 11:50gets good. Jimmy brings Carvana sponsorship
- 11:54from his IndyCar try, right? Carvana likes him.
- 11:58So Jimmy's there with all this money now, and now Maury
- 12:02Gallagher's going all right, now we're big time.
- 12:05Look here, everybody's, everybody's coming to my garage
- 12:07area. Just like Tony Stewart did with
- 12:11Stewart Haas, right? Gene Haas was a gabillionaire,
- 12:14but he he really wasn't taking series because he wasn't winning
- 12:17anything until Tony Stewart came.
- 12:22So this is what's going on right here at Legacy Club.
- 12:25Jimmie Johnson, the seven time champ and it doesn't hurt to
- 12:28have Richard Petty the king there.
- 12:31They're really making Maury Gallagher and this Legacy Club
- 12:34team, that's what it's called Legacy Club.
- 12:37They're making this this team really strong right now.
- 12:40And in the meanwhile Jimmy Johnson is going to become a
- 12:44real owner and get real money in return so Jimmy now can go ahead
- 12:51and live this great lifestyle. You know, put the black jacket
- 12:54on like Jeff Corn, walk around. Let me tell you what you need to
- 12:58do here. You know, that's the way it is.
- 13:01So I love Jimmie Johnson to death.
- 13:03I think, look, here's the end. This was a great move by Jimmy.
- 13:07Brilliant move because he saw what Jeff Gordon's doing.
- 13:11He saw what all these heroes Rusty Wallace, my brother owns 9
- 13:15dealerships. I mean, doing good, right?
- 13:18But these guys spend so much money that it is hard to keep
- 13:23this pace up. I'm telling you, if you got $100
- 13:26million and you're 48 years old and you run this lifestyle, you,
- 13:32you got to, you got to keep an eye on the checkbook, right?
- 13:35Because if you're in the stock market right now and you know
- 13:38you can't count on the stock market, gain 10,000 points every
- 13:42three years, all right. I understand money.
- 13:45I'm smart with money. So good Move by Jimmie Johnson.
- 13:49So that's why. And this is where Paul Harvey,
- 13:54you kids don't understand this. I I've been saying this lately.
- 13:57Paul Harvey did radio and he would say, and that's the end of
- 14:02the story, So Jimmie Johnson decides he wants to get into car
- 14:07ownership because you can make money.
- 14:10He can live the extravagant lifestyle.
- 14:12He can. He can hang out with the Barrett
- 14:14Jackson dudes. He can, you know, get the condo
- 14:18in up there in New York. He can fly across the pond.
- 14:22He can keep spending 100 grand a month or more and not have to
- 14:26worry about depleting the checkbook.
- 14:28Jimmy Johnson's a gamer. He wants to be a car owner.
- 14:31He found Maury Gallagher. And Jimmy brings some money.
- 14:36Maybe, I don't know, Jimmy's going to come on the show.
- 14:38I won't ask him that. But let's just assume Jimmy
- 14:41brings 510,000,000. He gives it to Maury.
- 14:44Now he's a player. He brings Carvana.
- 14:47Now he's running some races. Now he's he's letting the world
- 14:50know. Look, Jimmy Johnson's racing.
- 14:52You know he's in the sport. So there you got it.
- 14:57Great, brilliant move by Jimmy Johnson.
- 15:00And listen, this was the story on social media.
- 15:04Jimmy's biggest fans were going, Oh my God, why is Jimmy doing
- 15:07this? He's a seven time champion.
- 15:10He almost missed the date. Listen, Jimmy Johnson came off
- 15:14Turn 4 and was not in the Daytona 500.
- 15:18JJ Ellie goes high because he's got this big move on Ross
- 15:22Chastain and and JJ Ellie thinks he's going to pack.
- 15:26JJ or no. OK JJ Ellie thinks he's going to
- 15:30pass pack Ross Chastain and ask so he moves up so he doesn't hit
- 15:35him so hard. Jimmy just stay straight.
- 15:37Jimmy don't make no move he just stay straight. 2 football fields
- 15:41later, Jimmy Johnson makes the Daytona 500.
- 15:46But can you see on Jimmie Johnson's resume, Jimmie Johnson
- 15:50missed the Daytona 500 after coming back and and making a
- 15:54try. Listen, Jimmie Johnson can do
- 15:58whatever you want. He's one of he is probably the
- 16:01greatest race car driver. Respond right here and here's
- 16:05why. Jimmie Johnson is the greatest
- 16:06NASCAR driver of all time right now.
- 16:10Kyle Larson's there, but Kyle doesn't have 7 championships
- 16:14racing against Tony Stewart. Jeff Gordon.
- 16:17You got to remember Jimmie Johnson won 7 championships
- 16:20racing against Jeff Gordon, racing against Tony Stewart.
- 16:24So we we certainly did not want to see Jimmie Johnson miss the
- 16:30Daytona 500 and that's why I'm doing this show.
- 16:34Why is Jimmie Johnson after a three-year layoff, Why is he
- 16:39coming back? And I just told you why.
- 16:43This is what he had to do to get in to, you know, get ownership
- 16:48stake at at Legacy Club. All right, So that was pretty
- 16:53good. Let's look at it.
- 16:55That was a 17 minute show. I think it was well worth it.
- 16:58I think you're going to like it. I think you're down there in
- 17:00Daytona. You're going to like this show.
- 17:03I paint the picture. I tell the truth.
- 17:08And wow, Jimmy had to go through a lot and really put his put it
- 17:14on the line and and and become a a car owner.
- 17:17I applaud Jimmy Johnson. Thank you, Jimmy.
- 17:21I think you're going to elevate Legacy club like Tony Stewart
- 17:24did at Stewart Haas. Let me see.
- 17:27Let me look at my notes. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 17:32Yep. All right.
- 17:35Remember, he's 48 years old. There's nobody in our sport
- 17:39right now. That old Harvick just left and
- 17:42went to the TV booth here, here. Jimmy Johnson started his career
- 17:46back up at 48 years old, and now we know why.
- 17:51And that is the rest of the story.
- 17:54All right, everybody. Remember we are in podcast form.
- 17:57This is 18 minutes long, 19 minutes long.
- 18:01You're probably going to be able to listen to this one on your
- 18:04way to work because it's so short.
- 18:06So remember, we are in podcast form, We are on iTunes, we are
- 18:09Spotify. And I always forget to say this.
- 18:13Subscribe right here will you please?
- 18:15We're so close to the 100,000 subscriber trophy from YouTube
- 18:20and love you all, the Daytona 500, NASCAR's biggest race until
- 18:28the next show. Goodbye everybody.
