- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Then Hezekiah the king rose early and
- 0:05Speaker 1: gathered the rulers of the city and went up to
- 0:08Speaker 1: the house of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 20. Dear God,
- 0:14Speaker 1: as you increase the works of my hands and multiply
- 0:17Speaker 1: all that I touch today, I make a covenant with
- 0:21Speaker 1: you that as much as it remains with me, I
- 0:26Speaker 1: will make sure that I use my influence and affluence
- 0:30Speaker 1: to build the local church so that others can have
- 0:34Speaker 1: a place to be restored and healed. Like King Hezekiah,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I will place my focus on bringing excellence to your house.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I will be a resource to help bridge the gap
- 0:47Speaker 1: between those who are lost and those who can help
- 0:51Speaker 1: guide them back to your presence. I declare that this
- 0:55Speaker 1: will be a season of restoration and reconciliation. I declare
- 1:01Speaker 1: that the lost shall be found and that I can
- 1:04Speaker 1: be trusted to do more and become more for your glory.
- 1:10Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for praying with me today.

- 1:33Speaker 2: King Hezekiah. In our last story, we learned about the
- 1:37Speaker 2: tragic downfall of Israel. Fully immersed in evil, they found
- 1:42Speaker 2: themselves captive to the dark nations they swore allegiance to.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Fish hooks were driven into their mouths as they tugged
- 1:49Speaker 2: away from their homes. They were captives, stolen away from
- 1:53Speaker 2: their country, and yet they still did not cry out
- 1:56Speaker 2: to God for help. Now we return to the kingdom
- 2:00Speaker 2: of Judah. where the wicked king Ahaz perished. In his
- 2:04Speaker 2: place was Hezekiah, a young king whose righteousness was unmatched,
- 2:09Speaker 2: not even by David himself. Inspired by the books of
- 2:13Speaker 2: 2 Chronicles and 2 Kings.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Hello, this is Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of
- 2:22Speaker 3: The Bible in a Year. Thank you for joining us
- 2:24Speaker 3: once again today. In yesterday's episode, We heard about the
- 2:28Speaker 3: fall of Israel under the cowardly reign of King Hosea.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Generations of idolatry and rejection of God's ways culminated in
- 2:36Speaker 3: the capture, enslavement, and exile of the Israelites who were
- 2:40Speaker 3: dispersed throughout Assyria. Today, we'll return to Judah to find
- 2:45Speaker 3: a shining example of a king who followed the Lord
- 2:48Speaker 3: and did his will, King Hezekiah. Hezekiah was the complete
- 2:53Speaker 3: opposite of his wicked father Ahaz. And his righteousness exceeded
- 2:57Speaker 3: even King David. It's a beautiful example of a life
- 3:02Speaker 3: lived well in true heartfelt worship and service to our God.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So let's listen joyfully to his story.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Judah was suffering like a withered plant without sunlight. Their
- 3:15Speaker 2: time under the reign of Ahaz produced a great deal
- 3:18Speaker 2: of pain. As king, he was supposed to be a
- 3:21Speaker 2: symbol of hope. Instead, he was a symbol of dread.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The children of Judah grew up in a land filled
- 3:28Speaker 2: with uncertainty and instability. Idols erected in the streets loomed
- 3:34Speaker 2: over the citizens like dark watchmen. Their presence brought a
- 3:38Speaker 2: great deal of distress among the people. At any moment,
- 3:42Speaker 2: Ahaz or one of his priests could snatch them up
- 3:45Speaker 2: and sacrifice them. However, as all kings do, Ahaz died.
- 3:52Speaker 2: His body was buried in dust and the people did
- 3:55Speaker 2: their best to forget him. Ahaz's son, Hezekiah, was next
- 3:59Speaker 2: in line to take the throne. Hezekiah was a young man,
- 4:03Speaker 2: only 25 years old. At first, the people truly wondered
- 4:07Speaker 2: if he would be different. Hezekiah bore the name of
- 4:10Speaker 2: Ahaz as his father, but he was nothing like him.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Hezekiah grew up as a survivor of his father's cruelty.
- 4:17Speaker 2: He watched as false gods poisoned his father's mind. As
- 4:22Speaker 2: a result, he held fast to the Lord with all
- 4:24Speaker 2: his might. Hezekiah was anointed as king over Judah. The
- 4:29Speaker 2: crowds cheered. The elders nodded in confidence, and the Lord
- 4:33Speaker 2: rejoiced over him. Hezekiah took no time to celebrate. Instead,
- 4:38Speaker 2: he walked straight to the temple of God. The place
- 4:41Speaker 2: had been neglected under his father's rule. Dust collected in
- 4:46Speaker 2: the corners of the halls. The altar was stained, and
- 4:49Speaker 2: the gold pillars had lost their shine. The temple was
- 4:52Speaker 2: empty and quiet. All he could hear was the sound
- 4:55Speaker 2: of his own footsteps. He ran his hands against the walls,
- 4:59Speaker 2: looked up at the ceiling above. He breathed in deeply
- 5:03Speaker 2: and closed his eyes. Hezekiah listened to the quiet. There
- 5:08Speaker 2: were no sacrifices, no prayers and no service to the people.
- 5:14Speaker 2: The silence was deafening to Hezekiah. The absence of ministry
- 5:18Speaker 2: within the walls of the temple represented the emptiness of Judah.
- 5:23Speaker 2: People's hearts were empty. They were far from God. They
- 5:28Speaker 2: were scared and without the joy of the Lord. Tears
- 5:32Speaker 2: streamed down his face. Hezekiah would not allow people to
- 5:36Speaker 2: stray even further. Hezekiah looked to the front of the temple.
- 5:41Speaker 2: The doors were heavy and rusted from being shut for
- 5:43Speaker 2: so many years. Hezekiah's heart started to beat faster. He
- 5:48Speaker 2: could feel the presence of God The strong hand of
- 5:51Speaker 2: the Lord was upon him. His voice was silent, but
- 5:55Speaker 2: clear in his heart. Hezekiah ran towards the temple doors
- 5:59Speaker 2: and burst them open. Light beamed through the open doorway,
- 6:03Speaker 2: and a cloud of dust left the halls. People who
- 6:07Speaker 2: were passing by were startled at the sudden sound. Hezekiah
- 6:11Speaker 2: gathered his servants to find the priests and Levites. Then
- 6:15Speaker 2: he sent word for the best builders in the land.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Hezekiah was going to mend what was broken. He was
- 6:21Speaker 2: going to restore the temple and restore the hearts of Judah.
- 6:26Speaker 2: The first month of Hezekiah's rule was spent on the
- 6:28Speaker 2: restoration of the temple. He and his men spent days
- 6:32Speaker 2: fixing doorways, replacing beams, and polishing altars. The once dusty
- 6:37Speaker 2: building was restored to its former glory. Solomon himself would
- 6:41Speaker 2: have been pleased with Hezekiah's work. After the restoration was complete,
- 6:46Speaker 2: Hezekiah gathered all the priests and Levites. The men had
- 6:49Speaker 2: been cast away by King Ahaz and had finally come
- 6:53Speaker 2: out of hiding. As they gathered, Hezekiah stood up in excitement.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Hear me, Levites, he shouted. Prepare yourself and the temple.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Our fathers were unfaithful. Their hearts were dim and filled
- 7:07Speaker 2: with corruption. They forsook God, but we do not have to.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Hezekiah began to choke up. He could see the emotions
- 7:16Speaker 2: welling up from the priests that sat before him. Hundreds
- 7:20Speaker 2: of them sat in awe of their king's words. Hezekiah
- 7:23Speaker 2: continued with passion, saying, They shut these walls. They shut
- 7:27Speaker 2: the temple. They shut themselves off to God. No wonder
- 7:32Speaker 2: Judah has fallen so far from power and glory. Our
- 7:36Speaker 2: fathers were killed by swords and spears. Our sons and
- 7:40Speaker 2: daughters have been taken away in captivity. Hezekiah was speaking
- 7:45Speaker 2: with a great deal of strength. He paused for a
- 7:47Speaker 2: moment and turned his face to the temple. He spoke
- 7:50Speaker 2: with a whisper now, as if it was just him
- 7:53Speaker 2: and God speaking. The whole congregation leaned in to listen.
- 7:59Speaker 2: It is in my heart to make a covenant with God.
- 8:02Speaker 2: He turned back to the leaders before him, my sons.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Do not be idle. Do not neglect the Lord. He
- 8:10Speaker 2: has chosen you to stand before him with honor. He
- 8:13Speaker 2: has chosen you to minister to God and to the people.
- 8:19Speaker 2: As Hezekiah spoke, all the priests, elders, commanders, and the
- 8:23Speaker 2: Levites stood to their feet. They answered the call of God.
- 8:28Speaker 2: One by one they entered the temple with purpose. As
- 8:31Speaker 2: the months passed, the temple began to awaken with activity again.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Men and women were blessed once again with closeness to
- 8:39Speaker 2: God through the ministry of the priests. Not only was
- 8:42Speaker 2: the temple prepared, but all the past idols and instruments
- 8:46Speaker 2: of torture used by Ahaz were burned and destroyed. Beautiful
- 8:51Speaker 2: music filled the city and streets near the temple. Harps, trumpets,
- 8:56Speaker 2: lyres and cymbals played to the glory of God. Praises
- 9:00Speaker 2: were sung and the old Psalms of David were recited
- 9:03Speaker 2: in the presence of the whole nation. With gladness in
- 9:06Speaker 2: their hearts, they bowed in worship, and joy filled the
- 9:10Speaker 2: streets of Judah. Revival was echoing across the nation, and
- 9:14Speaker 2: the broken were being made whole again. Not only did
- 9:18Speaker 2: Hezekiah worship the Lord with all his heart, but he
- 9:21Speaker 2: also protected the people from evil. He outlawed parts of
- 9:24Speaker 2: the country where dark arts were practiced. He banned the
- 9:27Speaker 2: worshiping of idols, and he made laws that pointed people
- 9:31Speaker 2: in the direction of God. He trusted God with all
- 9:34Speaker 2: his being. No king before him or after him clung
- 9:38Speaker 2: to the presence of God more honestly. He did not
- 9:42Speaker 2: depart from the goodness of the Lord and his nation
- 9:45Speaker 2: was blessed for it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: We begin today's passage in the aftermath of a truly
- 9:53Speaker 3: terrible king. Ahaz had utterly rejected God, clung to countless
- 9:58Speaker 3: foreign gods, and defiled himself and Judah in ways no
- 10:02Speaker 3: king before him had done. When he died, Judah was suffering,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and the people lived in fear. Human sacrifice, something totally
- 10:11Speaker 3: abhorrent to the Lord, was commonplace under Ahaz. How far
- 10:15Speaker 3: the people had fallen from the days of good king Jotham.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Ahaz's son Hezekiah was anointed king in this context. It
- 10:24Speaker 3: would certainly be understandable for the people to expect more
- 10:27Speaker 3: of the same bad news. But Hezekiah could not have
- 10:31Speaker 3: been more different than his father. Listen to the words
- 10:34Speaker 3: of Hezekiah found in 2 Kings 18 verses 5 and 6.
- 10:40Speaker 3: He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so
- 10:43Speaker 3: that there was none like him among all the kings
- 10:45Speaker 3: of Judah after him, nor among those who were before him.
- 10:49Speaker 3: For he held fast to the Lord. He did not
- 10:52Speaker 3: depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the
- 10:55Speaker 3: Lord commanded Moses. I love those words. He held fast
- 11:01Speaker 3: to the Lord. That is a true measure of genuine
- 11:05Speaker 3: success in a person's life. To hold on to God
- 11:09Speaker 3: and never let go. And also to know that God
- 11:12Speaker 3: will never let go of us. That's precisely what Hezekiah did. Immediately,
- 11:18Speaker 3: when he became king, he set about fixing what his
- 11:21Speaker 3: father had destroyed. The temple of God which Ahaz had
- 11:25Speaker 3: plundered and shuttered was a pathetic sight. It grieved Hezekiah
- 11:29Speaker 3: to see the Lord's house in such a state. But
- 11:32Speaker 3: as sad as that picture was, what it represented was
- 11:36Speaker 3: even a greater tragedy. The people's hearts were in shambles.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They were so far from God, disconnected from His life-giving presence.
- 11:46Speaker 3: So Hezekiah resolved to make both things right, both at
- 11:50Speaker 3: the temple and with the people. He called the priests
- 11:53Speaker 3: and Levites as well as the best craftsmen. Work began
- 11:57Speaker 3: immediately to repair and restore the temple. God's servants, priests
- 12:02Speaker 3: who had gone into hiding in fear of the evil king,
- 12:06Speaker 3: stepped into the light again to begin guiding God's people
- 12:09Speaker 3: and their hearts back to the Lord. Hezekiah knew he
- 12:12Speaker 3: must lead the people and inspire them to change their
- 12:16Speaker 3: way of life. So he stood up and spoke loudly
- 12:20Speaker 3: and clearly. The many sins that had been committed by
- 12:23Speaker 3: their fathers hung heavy upon the people. But there was
- 12:26Speaker 3: a way out. Judah was suffering the consequences of generations
- 12:31Speaker 3: of sin. This was not God's cruelty, but it was
- 12:35Speaker 3: the natural outflow of their sin and the righteous judgment
- 12:39Speaker 3: of God. It was clearly time for the people to repent.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Hezekiah's words are a clear message to all of us today.
- 12:48Speaker 3: We do not have to live in the sins of
- 12:50Speaker 3: our fathers. We don't need to live in generational disobedience.
- 12:55Speaker 3: We can break the power of sin in our lives
- 12:57Speaker 3: through repentance. Hezekiah was calling God's people back into a
- 13:03Speaker 3: relationship with the Lord, who is provider and sustainer, and
- 13:07Speaker 3: the people listened, and we should listen today. In America,
- 13:11Speaker 3: we know that we stand in the face of an
- 13:14Speaker 3: impending judgment from God. In fact, the whole world is
- 13:18Speaker 3: ripe for judgment. But there is a way out. There
- 13:21Speaker 3: is a way through. And that is through the cross
- 13:24Speaker 3: and the resurrection of Christ and personal salvation, but also
- 13:28Speaker 3: the revival of God's church and God's people. Judah experienced
- 13:33Speaker 3: a revival of hearts, and the symbols of evil and
- 13:36Speaker 3: idolatry were purged from the land. Songs of praise fill
- 13:40Speaker 3: the air as the people worship the one true God again.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Our great God, our good God, accepted their praise and
- 13:47Speaker 3: their worship because they came to him sincerely. And what
- 13:50Speaker 3: a sweet song it must have been for the Lord
- 13:52Speaker 3: to hear the songs of revival, the songs of repentance,
- 13:56Speaker 3: and the songs of faith. Dear God, how we thank
- 14:00Speaker 3: you for the example of Hezekiah, who gave his entire
- 14:04Speaker 3: life to following you and to holding fast to you.
- 14:08Speaker 3: and leading your people. Thank you that you forgive when
- 14:12Speaker 3: we are ready to repent. And today, we're reminded that
- 14:17Speaker 3: when we are prodigal children, that we can always come
- 14:20Speaker 3: back to you because of your love for us. And
- 14:23Speaker 3: in the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. Thank you
