- 0:58Speaker 1: to visit with director James Vanderbilt and co star John
- 1:04Speaker 1: Slattery of the new film Nuremberg, which comes out on Friday.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We'll be doing this this hour. We've got a high
- 1:12Speaker 1: school report. Mallory is also here with some entertainment news,
- 1:17Speaker 1: so we got that going on for us, which is
- 1:19Speaker 1: nice Casius Howell is one of the semi finalists for
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Lombardy Award, which will be handed out in Houston
- 1:27Speaker 1: on December tenth. Three SEC players are in the group.
- 1:34Speaker 1: There are five Big ten players, three of them from
- 1:38Speaker 1: Ohio State, three Big twelve players, two from Texas Tech,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and two from the ACC. There were some glaring weaknesses
- 1:49Speaker 1: as far as I'm concerned that did not I did
- 1:52Speaker 1: vote on this award, and we'll vote for the finalists
- 1:56Speaker 1: of this award. But Tory and York at Texas A
- 2:02Speaker 1: and m is won and Hill what's a guy's name
- 2:07Speaker 1: at Texas Anthony Hill. Yeah, glaring weakness is there. The
- 2:14Speaker 1: CFP will announce its first poll tonight. I believe that's
- 2:19Speaker 1: at seven forty five. It's a little bit later. That
- 2:23Speaker 1: is coming out this evening. Expect the Aggies to be
- 2:27Speaker 1: somewhere in the top four. They have announced kickoff times
- 2:32Speaker 1: for the CFP games. First round game Friday, December nineteenth
- 2:38Speaker 1: at seven o'clock. Also first round game at eleven am Saturday,
- 2:46Speaker 1: December twentieth to thirty and six thirty three games there Wednesday,
- 2:55Speaker 1: December thirty first, Hey, that's New Year's Eve at six
- 3:00Speaker 1: thirty that is the Cotton Bowl and that will be
- 3:04Speaker 1: a quarter final eleven am on the first of January,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and the Orange Bowl three pm, the Rose bowls seven
- 3:13Speaker 1: pm the Sugar Bowl. The semifinal in the Fiesta Bowl
- 3:18Speaker 1: is six thirty on January eighth, and Chick fil A
- 3:23Speaker 1: Peach Bowl Friday, January ninth at six thirty. And the
- 3:27Speaker 1: National Championship Game is in North Miami South Fort Lauderdale.
- 3:36Speaker 1: That will be at six thirty on January nineteenth.
- 3:40Speaker 4: The Bull Show starts at seventy.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It does pow okay, I think it's to be done. Okay,
- 3:48Speaker 1: so they won't really announce things until seven forty five ish.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Let's see at Dabo Sweeney two coaches that are really
- 3:58Speaker 1: frustrated about they of officiating. Dabo said, in the meantime,
- 4:03Speaker 1: we got gambling issues going on, people being suspended, all
- 4:07Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, right, I mean, refs are people too,
- 4:11Speaker 1: It ain't just coaches and players. And if they're part
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the game, then by god, they ought to be
- 4:15Speaker 1: part of the game, and they ought to be part
- 4:17Speaker 1: of the accountability, and they ought to be part of
- 4:20Speaker 1: the consequences, not just behind some shadowy curtain like no,
- 4:25Speaker 1: they ought to have an answer for it. You go, Dabo.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I can't agree enough. UTSA quarterback Owen McCown has been
- 4:35Speaker 1: named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Week. Yes, that McCowan family thirty one of thirty
- 4:45Speaker 1: three for three hundred and seventy yards and four touchdowns
- 4:50Speaker 1: in utsa's forty eight twenty six beat down of Tulane
- 4:58Speaker 1: over the weekend. Aggie basketball one to zero under Bucky
- 5:03Speaker 1: McMillan after running away from Northwestern State ninety eight to
- 5:09Speaker 1: sixty eight. Last night. Ruben Domingus hit four seven from three.
- 5:14Speaker 1: He had eighteen points. Josh Holloway had thirteen. Federico Federico
- 5:21Speaker 1: had eight boards for the Aggies. They will play again
- 5:26Speaker 1: on Thursday night, and I should know who that is. Yes,
- 5:34Speaker 1: of course it is. I knew it was a directional school.
- 5:38Speaker 1: It's Texas Southern. If it's an A and M non
- 5:41Speaker 1: conference game this year, it is a directional school. Oh yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 1: we got directional schools everywhere. We've got basketball tonight. Actually
- 5:53Speaker 1: we started last night with an upset. The defending national champ,
- 5:56Speaker 1: Florida went down to Arizona. That was a highly entertaining
- 6:01Speaker 1: game in Las Vegas tonight. Duke and Texas play on
- 6:07Speaker 1: the ESPN, and that game is in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 6:14Speaker 1: By the way, Kirk Bowles is covering that game. We
- 6:16Speaker 1: will visit with Kirk on Friday. We will talk a
- 6:19Speaker 1: little bit of college who, not a lot, but some
- 6:22Speaker 1: with the columnists for the Houston Chronicle on Friday's show.
- 6:27Speaker 1: The Live Golf League is altering its format, going to
- 6:31Speaker 1: seventy two holes for all of its events this coming year.
- 6:36Speaker 1: John rom says it's a win for the league and
- 6:40Speaker 1: the players. The team competition will take place concurrently, with
- 6:45Speaker 1: all players scorers counting towards the team total each day.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Rom has been an ongoing opponent of the seventy two holes,
- 6:54Speaker 1: just like the PGA does. But speaking of the PGA,
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Live's decision to play their promotions event in Florida
- 7:05Speaker 1: means it will be deemed an unauthorized Remember when the
- 7:09Speaker 1: PGA and the Live were getting together and they were
- 7:12Speaker 1: going to merge and everything was going to be nice
- 7:15Speaker 1: and happy in one league. The Live Golf's decision to
- 7:20Speaker 1: play their promotions event in Florida means it will be
- 7:22Speaker 1: deemed an unauthorized event. By the PGA Tour, So any
- 7:28Speaker 1: PGA Tour player will not be granted a media rights
- 7:33Speaker 1: release and is subject to disciplinary action if they participate
- 7:40Speaker 1: January eighth through eleventh in Florida. The issue for the
- 7:45Speaker 1: tour is the tournament site being in North America. The
- 7:48Speaker 1: regulation state players will not be granted conflicting events or
- 7:53Speaker 1: media releases for tournaments staged in North America. Live Golf
- 7:59Speaker 1: has as it responded yet, but hey, I'm sure they will.
- 8:04Speaker 1: That won't be that won't be a problem. All right,
- 8:10Speaker 1: We're going to take a break. We're going to come back.
- 8:13Speaker 1: We're going to hear postgame Bucky. When we come back.
- 8:18Speaker 1: We've got a high school report, We've got an interview
- 8:21Speaker 1: with big Hollywood director and star coming up. That's just

- 9:05Speaker 6: NASCAR Xfinity Series race recap from Phoenix Raceway. I'm Kerrie Murphy.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Jesse Love wins the race and the championship.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I last few laps, you kind of thought if
- 9:17Speaker 7: I was in that position going into it, i'd probably emotional.
- 9:21Speaker 7: Like It's like, there's probably a couple of drivers that
- 9:24Speaker 7: would probably cry, Like the last couple laps. We were
- 9:27Speaker 7: like Chase Priscoe Southern five hundred, he was going over
- 9:30Speaker 7: that and he was saying, you know, he was crying
- 9:31Speaker 7: the last few laps. I think it was, or maybe
- 9:33Speaker 7: it was like Denny too, but I don't know. For me,
- 9:36Speaker 7: I was just like I knew a caution was going
- 9:38Speaker 7: to come out, so I didn't have like any emotion.
- 9:41Speaker 7: I was just honestly thinking the whole last few laps
- 9:45Speaker 7: a not to put a lap car in like a
- 9:47Speaker 7: bad position where they get frazzled, but more importantly, when
- 9:51Speaker 7: the caution comes out, what I was going to do
- 9:53Speaker 7: to get a better restart because I didn't win from
- 9:55Speaker 7: the front row all night, so yeah, that was what
- 9:58Speaker 7: I was focused on more than any and then we
- 10:00Speaker 7: crossed our finish line. Takes a whall from my brain
- 10:04Speaker 7: to shut off. I was just still focused on a restart,
- 10:08Speaker 7: so it was kind of crazy feeling really.
- 10:11Speaker 6: Eric Omarolo a second, follow by Connor Zilich. He won
- 10:14Speaker 6: ten races on the season, came up just short of
- 10:17Speaker 6: the title. Brandon Jones and Justin Olgey are also coming
- 10:20Speaker 6: up short rounds out the top five BP. Next to
- 10:23Speaker 6: the NASCAR Expinity Series is the Championship Banquet the off
- 10:26Speaker 6: season and Daytona to kick off the twenty twenty sixth season.
- 10:30Speaker 6: This is the final app.
- 10:33Speaker 8: At Bank of America. We asked our people, how do
- 10:35Speaker 8: you take ownership of your career.
- 10:37Speaker 9: I'm able to grow my way by putting the priorities
- 10:40Speaker 9: that I have for my career first.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I thrive on.
- 10:43Speaker 10: Being a leader who's behind the team, not in front
- 10:45Speaker 10: of the team.
- 10:46Speaker 11: Every few years, I'm being re energized because I get
- 10:48Speaker 11: to do something different and learn something new.
- 10:50Speaker 8: Co how our teammates are growing in their careers. At

- 11:32Speaker 14: This is your home for aggie football, basketball and baseball
- 11:37Speaker 14: the ZOL eleven fifty AM and ninety three point seven FM.
- 12:06Speaker 11: I keep a close watch on this heart of mine.
- 12:10Speaker 15: I keep mines wide open all the time.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I keep the ends up for the fight. I've just
- 12:18Speaker 1: been informed that the NFL trade deadline ended a little
- 12:23Speaker 1: more than an hour ago, so we're gonna be taking
- 12:26Speaker 1: your calls and all your opinions on that at six nine,
- 12:30Speaker 1: three eleven fifty be sure and calling way in on
- 12:34Speaker 1: all of the trades that were made before the NFL
- 12:37Speaker 1: trade deadline last night before an announced crowd of over
- 12:42Speaker 1: seventy five hundred and I think there were there were
- 12:45Speaker 1: over six thousand there. It was good. It was a
- 12:47Speaker 1: good start for Bucky Ball and Northwestern State. Pretty good turnout,
- 12:53Speaker 1: pretty good student turnout last night. Not not half bad
- 12:58Speaker 1: for a Northwestern state, So it was a good start.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Let's hear from Bucky and then we'll talk a little
- 13:06Speaker 1: bit about the game.
- 13:07Speaker 16: Pretty good job sharing that though the first half we
- 13:09Speaker 16: were like sharing the ball really well and not turning
- 13:12Speaker 16: it over, had good passing, had twenty two assists in
- 13:15Speaker 16: the game, had less than twenty fouls, which was kind
- 13:18Speaker 16: of our goals. When the more than twenty assists, less
- 13:20Speaker 16: than twenty fouls, which was good.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I wanted ten turnovers or less. We had twelve.
- 13:24Speaker 16: So overall, I think that we were really pretty decent
- 13:29Speaker 16: considering all factors.
- 13:30Speaker 4: First game of the year. Could have been worse, could
- 13:34Speaker 4: have been better.
- 13:35Speaker 16: But I think that the focus that we got to
- 13:37Speaker 16: get to is there was a loll in that game
- 13:39Speaker 16: for about eight minutes if you just picked apart, forty
- 13:42Speaker 16: minutes or just some kind of lull there, and we
- 13:45Speaker 16: got to get to where we can play that for
- 13:46Speaker 16: forty minutes of just high intensity, high pressure defense and offense.
- 13:50Speaker 16: You know, on the other team, we're not necessarily playing
- 13:53Speaker 16: Northwestern States. Even though all these things mattering, you gotta
- 13:58Speaker 16: a can just not get up to win. You got
- 13:59Speaker 16: win by certain ounce for the tournament, the computer rankings
- 14:02Speaker 16: and all that for them say tournament. We're playing for
- 14:04Speaker 16: the long game here, and so even late in that game,
- 14:07Speaker 16: we're trying to play as if, hey, we got to
- 14:11Speaker 16: do things. We got to keep getting better so we
- 14:12Speaker 16: can compete in SEC. That's what we're really focused on.
- 14:16Speaker 16: Some individual performance were pretty good. I thought Josh Holloway
- 14:20Speaker 16: was really good in that game. He's been with us
- 14:22Speaker 16: the longest, playing really good basketball, highest percentage, highest plus minus,
- 14:27Speaker 16: and it was great to see him play that way.
- 14:29Speaker 16: Ruby Domingus played like a pro and let the game
- 14:32Speaker 16: come to him. I thought Fetty Fetti was great in
- 14:33Speaker 16: that game. Others played well, but those were probably the best.
- 14:38Speaker 16: I thought they had the biggest impact in that game.
- 14:41Speaker 17: But yeah, with all these hats playing in their first game,
- 14:45Speaker 17: how much of it do you feel like they fully
- 14:48Speaker 17: grasp your style of basketball? And then I also wanted
- 14:51Speaker 17: to ask you said, aside from that low, what are
- 14:53Speaker 17: some of the ways that you feel like after this
- 14:55Speaker 17: first game you could really get that.
- 14:57Speaker 16: Yeah, you know, I think that they grasp what we
- 15:01Speaker 16: want to do. It's just we got to get the
- 15:03Speaker 16: total intensity up where it's sustained for forty minutes.
- 15:06Speaker 4: And how that we're going to do it. That's gonna
- 15:08Speaker 4: be That's got to be the key. I've never had
- 15:10Speaker 4: a team though, for what it's worth that I've coached,
- 15:11Speaker 4: just had that in the first game of the year.
- 15:13Speaker 16: The teams way further ahead with that then a lot
- 15:17Speaker 16: then I would have expected. To have so many new players,
- 15:20Speaker 16: hopefully it will be the lead the furthest behind going forward,
- 15:24Speaker 16: but have so many new players, that's probably there a
- 15:27Speaker 16: little further ahead that I thought with that, because it's
- 15:28Speaker 16: not the easy style to play. You got to play
- 15:30Speaker 16: fast and aggressive throughout. So what we got to improve
- 15:33Speaker 16: on obviously is like I said, forty minutes of just
- 15:35Speaker 16: unrelenting effort. That's why we're playing to the end right there.
- 15:38Speaker 16: You know, we're we're picking up. We're working on that
- 15:41Speaker 16: right now. Half court defense got down beat down the
- 15:43Speaker 16: slot too much, you know, just off the dribble from
- 15:46Speaker 16: the gap. We got to control the gap better. And
- 15:49Speaker 16: I thought we got too still happy in the half court.
- 15:51Speaker 16: Our deal needs to be aggressive defense in the full court,
- 15:54Speaker 16: solid defense when we get to the half court. We
- 15:56Speaker 16: probably got just too still happy on defense right there.
- 15:59Speaker 16: And then I'll so you just can't have a lull
- 16:01Speaker 16: on offense like we did that bass popped in the
- 16:03Speaker 16: first half and late we kind of rested on offense.
- 16:06Speaker 4: That can't happen.
- 16:07Speaker 18: And the moment you got here, you sold offense and
- 16:11Speaker 18: tempo offense from your guys. Do you feel like ninety
- 16:14Speaker 18: eight points was a good way to kind of back
- 16:16Speaker 18: that up in the first performance?
- 16:18Speaker 16: Yeah, you know, points can be misleading, Get Tom, because
- 16:20Speaker 16: I thought they tried to slow the tempo down and
- 16:22Speaker 16: a lot of I mean, you could say the ball
- 16:24Speaker 16: went through the net.
- 16:25Speaker 4: They try to let it roll for ten seconds, tried
- 16:26Speaker 4: to slow the tempo down.
- 16:28Speaker 16: You know, obviously, you percentage just matter. I wanted to
- 16:31Speaker 16: be above fifty percent from the field, we're right at fifty.
- 16:33Speaker 16: I want to hold them a low forty percent from
- 16:35Speaker 16: the field, and they were right at forty. So I
- 16:38Speaker 16: think good passing leads to good baskets, right, And I
- 16:42Speaker 16: think if you asked me why did we not get
- 16:45Speaker 16: to one hundred, I would say it was because we
- 16:47Speaker 16: had two turnovers.
- 16:48Speaker 4: We need only have ten, and we would have more
- 16:49Speaker 4: shots at the basket.
- 16:51Speaker 11: The full court pressure seemed like gave them a lot
- 16:53Speaker 11: of issues, But you also give up some long passes,
- 16:56Speaker 11: some open shots out of it. How would you kind
- 16:58Speaker 11: of assess how effective it were, maybe what led to
- 17:01Speaker 11: some of those lapses.
- 17:03Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean it's just those we will give up
- 17:05Speaker 16: some of those. It's just the cost of doing business.
- 17:07Speaker 16: It is what it is, right, you know. And I
- 17:09Speaker 16: think the thing is they can score those in the full,
- 17:11Speaker 16: they can score them in the half. But you know,
- 17:14Speaker 16: the total of what we want to do is lean
- 17:16Speaker 16: on the other team throughout a game so that not
- 17:18Speaker 16: only that they suffer defense that they're often suffers, but
- 17:23Speaker 16: that their defense starts to suffer less deep balls probably
- 17:28Speaker 16: than I expected in reality. I mean, just being real
- 17:31Speaker 16: with you, I mean, it's just what it is, like
- 17:33Speaker 16: it takes them a second to get it.
- 17:35Speaker 4: But overall positive.
- 17:37Speaker 16: In the game, I would say, overall positive in the game.
- 17:40Speaker 16: We'll keep getting better and better with that. We trapped
- 17:42Speaker 16: a lot in this game. Sometimes we'll pick up, we
- 17:44Speaker 16: won't trap, but because we need to work on it, right,
- 17:47Speaker 16: I mean, we got to work on our back line
- 17:49Speaker 16: stretching up. We probably could have gotten more stops just
- 17:52Speaker 16: picking up, not trapping as much, maybe, but we wouldn't
- 17:55Speaker 16: be able to work on the things we wanted to,
- 17:56Speaker 16: and we probably wouldn't have won by as many points
- 17:59Speaker 16: because we want more possessions in a game, right.
- 18:01Speaker 7: It's gonna take Pop some time to get to the player.
- 18:04Speaker 11: You know he can be, but for his first action
- 18:07Speaker 11: live game in eleven months or what you like from
- 18:10Speaker 11: him or notice.
- 18:10Speaker 16: From him, I thought he'd got better as a game
- 18:12Speaker 16: went along. I think he was a little nervous when
- 18:14Speaker 16: it started, just because he hadn't played so long.
- 18:17Speaker 4: You know, it's weird because our team hadn't.
- 18:18Speaker 16: Practiced with Pop out there, so it's not just him
- 18:22Speaker 16: playing well and figuring it out. It's like everyone else
- 18:24Speaker 16: kind of knowing how to play with him, right, I mean,
- 18:28Speaker 16: you know, Marshall read's a great quarterback, but hey, if
- 18:31Speaker 16: he doesn't practice and he shows up game one, it's
- 18:33Speaker 16: not just about and he plays just as everybody know
- 18:36Speaker 16: right how to play with him. And so I think
- 18:39Speaker 16: that that's just gonna keep getting better and better. But overall,
- 18:41Speaker 16: for since went out a year, just be able to
- 18:43Speaker 16: play defense and go three freight from the field, that's
- 18:47Speaker 16: a positive.
- 18:48Speaker 4: I guess to that end too.
- 18:49Speaker 3: You said last week he was going to be a
- 18:50Speaker 3: game time decision.
- 18:51Speaker 11: So just what did you see from his progression this
- 18:53Speaker 11: last week that made uncomfortable enough to play tonight?
- 18:55Speaker 16: Yeah, you know, we thought we could play him between
- 18:57Speaker 16: fifteen and twenty minutes.
- 18:58Speaker 4: We're right in between. That pain was all good.
- 19:02Speaker 16: We obviously weren't gonna put him out there if he
- 19:05Speaker 16: wasn't good to go.
- 19:07Speaker 4: I think that you can.
- 19:08Speaker 16: You got a theory on this that you can sit
- 19:10Speaker 16: players until they're fully ready to play. There they're allocated minute,
- 19:13Speaker 16: but once the season starts, you're not practicing the same
- 19:15Speaker 16: way we didn't practice today.
- 19:16Speaker 4: He has to use this as is practice, that's what
- 19:19Speaker 4: you got to use it like.
- 19:20Speaker 16: And so that was a plan and hopefully wakes up
- 19:25Speaker 16: tomorrow and he's paying for you like he was when
- 19:26Speaker 16: we left that locker room.
- 19:28Speaker 18: Cool little moment at the end there for Chris to
- 19:30Speaker 18: get two points from being the guy that kind of
- 19:32Speaker 18: was a little bit of a glue there to start
- 19:33Speaker 18: out with.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris is a glue guy.
- 19:35Speaker 16: I mean he'll get more minutes than he played tonight, right,
- 19:37Speaker 16: I mean, we got it. We got a deep team,
- 19:40Speaker 16: and you know it's it's good because when you have
- 19:45Speaker 16: a deep team, it's just if someone's not doing.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Their jobs, the next guy's gonna play.
- 19:49Speaker 16: And we got a deep team, not because we got
- 19:51Speaker 16: you know, ten guys on the NBA draft board right now.
- 19:54Speaker 4: We got ten solid, good players.
- 19:56Speaker 16: That's what we got and so therefore it's gonna be
- 20:00Speaker 16: different people's nights every other game, and he'll get some minutes.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Chris is a scrapper and is about winning.
- 20:06Speaker 11: Was the proportion of threes to other shots about what
- 20:09Speaker 11: you'd like?
- 20:11Speaker 16: Let's see what we're thirty one seventy one shots. They
- 20:14Speaker 16: usually like at fifty to fifty. So you know, maybe
- 20:16Speaker 16: if we got some more up, but you know, you
- 20:18Speaker 16: got to play with the game dictates, right, and so
- 20:22Speaker 16: you know it's close though thirty five shit, took thirty
- 20:25Speaker 16: five there.
- 20:25Speaker 4: I feel good about it.
- 20:26Speaker 16: You know, how about some of the playmakers they had,
- 20:30Speaker 16: you know, that's some of their guards pretty ain't good.
- 20:32Speaker 3: You know.
- 20:33Speaker 16: Obviously number five went off in that game at twenty eight,
- 20:36Speaker 16: shot at well, four for four from three, and so
- 20:40Speaker 16: they gave us a good test.
- 20:41Speaker 8: Man.
- 20:41Speaker 16: They're well coached, they know what they're doing, and their
- 20:44Speaker 16: guards were athletic, right, I mean you saw some of
- 20:46Speaker 16: these players with their four comes over and pinshots off
- 20:48Speaker 16: the glass.
- 20:49Speaker 4: We got something out of that game. They had a plan,
- 20:52Speaker 4: so that was good for us as well.
- 20:54Speaker 19: I wanted to ask you it was, Yeah, Michael Thomas
- 20:57Speaker 19: with twenty eight points to night for them, is that
- 21:00Speaker 19: something playing, you know, against guard that talented this early
- 21:04Speaker 19: in the season that you think will prepare you well
- 21:06Speaker 19: when you go kind of deeper to non conference plan
- 21:09Speaker 19: and an SEC play.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 16: I mean everybody's got good players. I mean people are
- 21:14Speaker 16: some play times, teams are going.
- 21:16Speaker 4: To get off on us.
- 21:17Speaker 16: I mean that's just the way it is. Because it's
- 21:18Speaker 16: a full full court game. You know, went four for
- 21:22Speaker 16: four from three. He made some tough ones, but they
- 21:25Speaker 16: also missed some open ones. Right, But we obviously want
- 21:29Speaker 16: to play good players. We want to play well coached teams,
- 21:31Speaker 16: and we want to play teams I can get us better.
- 21:33Speaker 4: We got better tonight, that's for sure.
- 21:36Speaker 19: And then three games in the first week of this season.
- 21:38Speaker 19: Do you think that's something that will prepare you well
- 21:40Speaker 19: as the year goes on, just kind of the intensity
- 21:42Speaker 19: to get you know, that schedule to start get the year.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you can only do so much. You
- 21:47Speaker 4: saw in that game. I don't know if you felt
- 21:49Speaker 4: like you know, most people they don't.
- 21:52Speaker 16: You know, I've coached how we played for a long time,
- 21:55Speaker 16: so most people would be like, well, I didn't know
- 21:56Speaker 16: what you're saying saying, but there was just a lull,
- 21:59Speaker 16: not a significant low, not like a you probably looked
- 22:03Speaker 16: like a regular basketball game. But then you saw times
- 22:05Speaker 16: in that game we're just unrelenting effort, you know, put
- 22:09Speaker 16: on the gas pedal, foot on their throat, right, and
- 22:14Speaker 16: we were.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Like that for most of the game. But thanks, you're
- 22:18Speaker 4: not all the game.
- 22:19Speaker 16: So our goal next game is how do we turn
- 22:22Speaker 16: that up to Maybe you got twenty five minutes that night,
- 22:25Speaker 16: let's get to twenty eight. Then maybe the next time
- 22:27Speaker 16: was at thirty one, and then you build that up
- 22:29Speaker 16: and you're able to do it for forty minutes and
- 22:31Speaker 16: you're strong. You know, that's when you become a tough
- 22:33Speaker 16: team to play against.
- 22:34Speaker 4: What do you think what do you think you remember
- 22:36Speaker 4: most about coaching your first game here? Good question. I
- 22:44Speaker 4: don't know.
- 22:44Speaker 16: It's weird that it was my first game and it
- 22:46Speaker 16: was one hundred to winning college.
- 22:47Speaker 4: That was pretty weird, you know what I'm saying. No,
- 22:50Speaker 4: it was fun.
- 22:51Speaker 16: Just I guess I'll remember that that. I remember those
- 22:56Speaker 16: guys put on that water them in the locker room,
- 22:58Speaker 16: that they just did.
- 23:01Speaker 1: You feel like you're closer to finding those groups of
- 23:04Speaker 1: five on the court that really gelled well together.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 23:08Speaker 16: You know, we got Pop's first game back in Mckenzienbacco.
- 23:12Speaker 16: You know, uh, it's highly tided player in.
- 23:15Speaker 4: A lot of ways on our team.
- 23:16Speaker 16: Hadn't practiced uh with this group yet with everybody, So
- 23:20Speaker 16: it's gonna take some time. Obviously, we're not gonna have
- 23:24Speaker 16: games where everybody gets that many minutes.
- 23:26Speaker 4: You know, tighten up as we go along.
- 23:28Speaker 16: But in the process, you know, this is good that
- 23:31Speaker 16: we can look at look at different groups because we
- 23:33Speaker 16: got to be able play different ways sometimes it's gonna
- 23:35Speaker 16: be our press that wins a game. Sometimes it can
- 23:37Speaker 16: be a lockdown half court. Sometimes it's gonna be running.
- 23:39Speaker 16: Sometimes it's gonna be half court offense. So we've got
- 23:41Speaker 16: to find out who can do what and who can
- 23:42Speaker 16: play it well with each other. And that's why basketball
- 23:45Speaker 16: is a conference sport and then the year sport, because
- 23:48Speaker 16: this is the time when you find those rotations.
- 23:50Speaker 19: First game from the Red red and crowdwell does that like?
- 23:53Speaker 4: That was great?
- 23:53Speaker 16: I was glad, you know, I felt them, glad they
- 23:55Speaker 16: were there. We appreciate everybody coming out and fight. And
- 23:57Speaker 16: I know it's hey, looking from Alabama, it's still November.
- 24:01Speaker 16: This isn't even basketball season yet a lot of people's minds,
- 24:03Speaker 16: but hey, we're fighting to get to the innsay tournament,
- 24:06Speaker 16: and we accomplished that goal tonight in step one didn't win.
- 24:11Speaker 16: But then also there's a certain amount that you got
- 24:13Speaker 16: to look at when you're in this deal with the
- 24:14Speaker 16: metrics that you gotta win by. That's just the way
- 24:17Speaker 16: that it is. And so we don't want to be
- 24:19Speaker 16: on that bubble and miss out. So we appreciate everybody
- 24:22Speaker 16: coming out fighting with us. And look, we're gonna have highs.
- 24:24Speaker 16: We're gonna have loads with this group, There's no question
- 24:26Speaker 16: about that. And we just got to stay together and
- 24:29Speaker 16: just keep fighting.
- 24:30Speaker 1: You got shot nearly fifty percent from the floor, but
- 24:32Speaker 1: still got forty four rebounds, including seventeen offensive.
- 24:36Speaker 20: How impressed were you with the you know they're playing
- 24:38Speaker 20: on the boards.
- 24:39Speaker 16: Well, so, like that's how it all ties together a
- 24:41Speaker 16: lot of times, and I thought there's times we didn't
- 24:43Speaker 16: attack the glass, but like you know, we pick up
- 24:45Speaker 16: on misshots and made shots in the full court. So
- 24:47Speaker 16: on misshots we crash five players so that we can
- 24:50Speaker 16: match up and pressure.
- 24:52Speaker 4: So like it goes together, like we'll give out.
- 24:54Speaker 16: Some runouts on misshotsh they're shooting laoffs, but we're also
- 24:57Speaker 16: getting a high number of offensive rebounds because we're able
- 24:59Speaker 16: to crash five, gonna pick a full court after we
- 25:01Speaker 16: miss so the whole thing kind of ties together. We
- 25:05Speaker 16: wanted to have ten more shots than they did, and
- 25:07Speaker 16: you kind of measure that by the turnover margin and
- 25:10Speaker 16: an offensive rebound margin. I think we had eleven was
- 25:12Speaker 16: the difference in that. So when you do that, that's
- 25:16Speaker 16: usually going to equate to winning basketball.
- 25:18Speaker 1: So I mean that was a clinic I hope you
- 25:20Speaker 1: listened to figure out what's going on with the with
- 25:23Speaker 1: this team at the at the first part. You know,
- 25:28Speaker 1: Scott Clinton and I were sitting together last night. I said,
- 25:31Speaker 1: this what you're going to find, I think throughout the
- 25:34Speaker 1: year because of the style of play is you're going
- 25:37Speaker 1: to have a lot of ten oh runs by A
- 25:40Speaker 1: and M. And you're going to have a lot of
- 25:42Speaker 1: ten oh runs by the other team. Right, That's that's
- 25:47Speaker 1: what this style of play is going to be. The
- 25:49Speaker 1: idea is to get up more shots, which they did.
- 25:54Speaker 1: They got up thirteen more shots than the opponent last night.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So in order to get off more shots, you've got
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be plus on the turnover margin, and A and
- 26:06Speaker 1: M was plus four on the turnover margin. I think
- 26:10Speaker 1: rebounding could be an issue with this team in the
- 26:15Speaker 1: long run when they play more athletic teams and they
- 26:18Speaker 1: get in the league play. That's at least what I'm
- 26:22Speaker 1: thinking might happen. I just I want to see and
- 26:27Speaker 1: it's going to be a while. It may be in
- 26:29Speaker 1: the December or later. With the best three players on
- 26:35Speaker 1: the court at the same time, which is Griffin and
- 26:40Speaker 1: Pop isaacs Imbaco, those are going to be your three
- 26:44Speaker 1: best players, or should be your three best players, and
- 26:48Speaker 1: they may not be ready and able to go, you know,
- 26:54Speaker 1: for a while when you get them all together. And
- 26:57Speaker 1: it was obvious Pop Isaacs hadn't played in eleven months.
- 27:01Speaker 1: But he did get better as the game went on.
- 27:04Speaker 1: You could see he got more comfortable. You know, he
- 27:09Speaker 1: scored eight and sixteen minutes against not a lot about
- 27:13Speaker 1: the score, but he had two assists. He also had
- 27:15Speaker 1: three turnovers. That's going to get better. I did like age,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but that was against a team you know that's not
- 27:26Speaker 1: very good inside, with not a lot of beef inside,
- 27:29Speaker 1: so he took advantage of that. He's a big body.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Federico was an interesting guy because, look, he has played
- 27:39Speaker 1: at the highest levels at Texas Tech for a top
- 27:42Speaker 1: ten program, right and you know, he ended up playing
- 27:48Speaker 1: almost eighteen minutes last night. He ended up with eight points,
- 27:58Speaker 1: he ended up with eight rebounds, and I think he
- 28:01Speaker 1: did he had a double double in that scrimmage against
- 28:04Speaker 1: Arizona State, if I'm not mistaken. And it's interesting to
- 28:09Speaker 1: see how he's going to mesh into this style because
- 28:12Speaker 1: that certainly wasn't isn't what he's used to. He's not
- 28:18Speaker 1: the swiftest guy on the court, so I'm interested to
- 28:24Speaker 1: see how he's but he's a good player. How he
- 28:29Speaker 1: is going to be incorporated. I like Holloway, I like Hill.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Hill didn't have a great offensive night, but I like
- 28:40Speaker 1: the athleticism with him and Lane. I think Ruben Domingus
- 28:45Speaker 1: is going to come off the bench. I don't know
- 28:47Speaker 1: that you know for sure going into conference play, but
- 28:53Speaker 1: that's what I think is going to happen. And he
- 28:58Speaker 1: produced four out of seven last night, four out of
- 29:00Speaker 1: five from the line. You could tell that he's a shooter,
- 29:03Speaker 1: he's comfortable doing it, and you know, we'll see what
- 29:07Speaker 1: happens going forward.
- 29:10Speaker 4: Rebounds.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Oh, he did only have four boards, but he had
- 29:13Speaker 1: double digit points eleven and four. Okay, okay, you know
- 29:20Speaker 1: again without Mbaco, it's hard to tell about the front
- 29:24Speaker 1: line so much, but there there is chaos. It does
- 29:31Speaker 1: move quick, I tell you. The most impressive thing, probably
- 29:37Speaker 1: to me, is how fast they played and only had
- 29:41Speaker 1: twelve turnovers. Right, and Bucky said, the goal is ten.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You get to ten, and again that's that's more shots
- 29:50Speaker 1: you get to put up, and that's what the game
- 29:53Speaker 1: is predicated on, getting shots up. A lot of shots.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I was surprised they passed up as many three points
- 30:00Speaker 1: shots as they did last night. That would have been
- 30:03Speaker 1: my question afterward. I mean, they took thirty one threes
- 30:07Speaker 1: and Bucky said, hey, we want to be about fifty
- 30:09Speaker 1: to fifty so in seventy one shots, so they got close.
- 30:14Speaker 1: But I was surprised, and I think part of that
- 30:17Speaker 1: is first game. I think part of that is the players,
- 30:25Speaker 1: you know, wanting to distribute and pass the ball. So
- 30:31Speaker 1: it's gonna be interesting to see how things improve. The
- 30:34Speaker 1: quality of competition will improve on Sunday. I don't know
- 30:38Speaker 1: by how much, you know, I don't know about Oklahoma State.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Traditionally they've been good and a solid big twelve team.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I know it will be better than the first two games, right,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and there will be other opportunities going forward. But I
- 30:58Speaker 1: thought a pretty nice start last night. Over all, Oklahoma
- 31:03Speaker 1: State placed not against Roberts, oh Oral Roberts, Okay, a
- 31:09Speaker 1: team with a little basketball tradition. Gallerya has been part

- 34:15Speaker 27: phone line to visit with the head football coach for
- 34:17Speaker 27: the Marshall Mavericks, Jason Hammett.
- 34:18Speaker 1: How are you doing today, right right?
- 34:21Speaker 3: Thanks for having me on.
- 34:22Speaker 27: Yeah, of course, thanks for coming on. You came into
- 34:24Speaker 27: the Marshall program and took over in twenty twenty four.
- 34:27Speaker 27: What were some of the challenges of taking over the program?
- 34:30Speaker 3: Well, I was here was an assistance. I've been here
- 34:32Speaker 3: two years with Coach Evarez. When he retired, we had
- 34:35Speaker 3: a really pretty seamless transition from him to me. You know,
- 34:40Speaker 3: I knew where the kids were, knew you know, I
- 34:42Speaker 3: knew where we needed to work on things, and I
- 34:44Speaker 3: knew what we had coming back. So I think I
- 34:46Speaker 3: had advantage on that part, but but now we you know,
- 34:51Speaker 3: it was one of those things you you kind of
- 34:53Speaker 3: put your own spin on it and keep moving, you know,
- 34:56Speaker 3: moving direction and keep coaching.
- 34:59Speaker 27: And your program had a great season last year, going
- 35:01Speaker 27: ten and three overall in five and one in district.
- 35:04Speaker 27: What lessons did you learn from those successes and have
- 35:07Speaker 27: you brought them into the season this year?
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we talked a lot about adversity. I mean,
- 35:13Speaker 3: you know, who who can overcome adversity? Last year four
- 35:16Speaker 3: times we were down or tied at half time that
- 35:18Speaker 3: we came back and win games. You know, those are
- 35:21Speaker 3: the those are the difference maker kind of games. When
- 35:24Speaker 3: when you look at the season, uh, we've already been
- 35:27Speaker 3: in a little bit of that already.
- 35:29Speaker 18: You know.
- 35:29Speaker 3: We we went for two and had to defend a
- 35:32Speaker 3: Hill Mary against Tyler early, uh you know legacy tie
- 35:37Speaker 3: game late, you know, melt pleasant. We needed a defensive
- 35:42Speaker 3: score to win the game. You know, these are all
- 35:44Speaker 3: just some example I mean of our kids and how
- 35:46Speaker 3: tough they play and and you know, willingness to to
- 35:50Speaker 3: fight back and have some you know, great to you
- 35:53Speaker 3: when when when adversity comes knocking.
- 35:55Speaker 27: M and which influential players graduated last season, and are
- 36:00Speaker 27: there anyone you like to highlight that stood out and
- 36:03Speaker 27: really filled those shoes this season?
- 36:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we lost a love We lost twenty seven seniors
- 36:09Speaker 3: last year. We ended up losing seven and seven. You know,
- 36:14Speaker 3: we lost seven off the offense and seven off the defense,
- 36:16Speaker 3: so a lot of good players. You know, we had
- 36:18Speaker 3: a really great running game last year. Were you know,
- 36:22Speaker 3: twenty five hundred yards rushing last year. You know, our
- 36:25Speaker 3: our two running backs, Samaje Gats and he's at Bland
- 36:28Speaker 3: right now, and our other running back, Isaiah Bush is
- 36:31Speaker 3: at East Texas Baptist, and then our quarterback out and
- 36:35Speaker 3: account for a lot of the other yards. And obviously
- 36:38Speaker 3: he's back. He's accounted for over a thousand yards this year. Russian.
- 36:42Speaker 3: You know, his role has changed a little bit more,
- 36:45Speaker 3: you know, in terms of how much he needs to
- 36:46Speaker 3: carry the ball this year. And then on defense, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: we lost you know, quite a few good players on defense.
- 36:52Speaker 3: We lost both our defensive ends last year. Jayden Cooks
- 36:57Speaker 3: is a kid that's out at sant Angelo Stay right now.
- 37:02Speaker 3: And Caden Rodgers. Those two guys graduated, and then our
- 37:05Speaker 3: two corners Damian Smith and DJ Gedoh. You know DJ's
- 37:09Speaker 3: running track at Preview and Damien is running track at
- 37:14Speaker 3: at Tyler. So placed the two corners and two d ns.
- 37:17Speaker 3: You know, we've had a lot of kids step up.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Jamarrion Sparks is a two way player for US players,
- 37:23Speaker 3: receiver and corner. Monte Haynes plays the other corner. And
- 37:27Speaker 3: then you know in D line it's a little different
- 37:29Speaker 3: in terms of some of the schematic stuff, but you know,
- 37:33Speaker 3: Brandon Richardson and Brion Williams have kind of anchored our
- 37:36Speaker 3: D line this year.
- 37:38Speaker 27: Yeah, And what has been your toughest matchup this season
- 37:41Speaker 27: and what kind of lessons have you taken away from it?
- 37:45Speaker 3: Well, you know, there's been quite a few tough ones,
- 37:48Speaker 3: you know when you look back at it. You know,
- 37:50Speaker 3: we you know, we play Longview long views and Marshall
- 37:54Speaker 3: have played for one hundred and twenty years, you know,
- 37:57Speaker 3: whether Marshall's five A and long View sit and all
- 38:01Speaker 3: the things that long you can be you know, so
- 38:04Speaker 3: so we we gauge our season a lot on long View.
- 38:06Speaker 3: It's the second week of the year this year. Our defense,
- 38:10Speaker 3: you know, really, you know, played a tremendous game against
- 38:15Speaker 3: Longview kind of kept us in the game the whole
- 38:17Speaker 3: night and we weren't able to win it, but you know,
- 38:20Speaker 3: it kind of proved, you know, we have some toughness
- 38:23Speaker 3: to us.
- 38:25Speaker 27: And you faced Nakadocus last week. What do you think
- 38:27Speaker 27: went well and where do you think your team was challenged?
- 38:31Speaker 3: Well, you know, next having a great year. They you know,
- 38:35Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the best year they've had
- 38:37Speaker 3: in twenty years or something. They you know, they have
- 38:42Speaker 3: a really good receiver. They challenged us and that aspect
- 38:45Speaker 3: number eighty eight from that tremendous receiver. We had to do.
- 38:50Speaker 3: You know, we had to have plans, multiple plans to
- 38:53Speaker 3: to be able to limit him or stop him or
- 38:54Speaker 3: slow him down, which we did. You know, we did
- 38:57Speaker 3: some of those things. But you know, it was definitely
- 39:00Speaker 3: a challenge for our defense, challenge for our defense coordinator,
- 39:04Speaker 3: defensive staff. Uh, you know, we you know obviously did
- 39:08Speaker 3: a bunch of good things. You know, we had two
- 39:09Speaker 3: defensive scores last week against them, you know, and and
- 39:13Speaker 3: and then offensively, you know, our quarterback rush for over
- 39:16Speaker 3: one hundred yards and scored two touchdowns and three for
- 39:19Speaker 3: another so plenty of good stuff. I mean, you know
- 39:22Speaker 3: what just kind of proves again. You know, we're again
- 39:24Speaker 3: in a game with them, and our kids were able
- 39:27Speaker 3: to play tough, overcome adversity and win the game.
- 39:30Speaker 27: And your next matchup is against Hallsville, correct, yes, sir,
- 39:34Speaker 27: what are you expecting from that matchup? And how do
- 39:35Speaker 27: you think your teams will clash?
- 39:38Speaker 3: Well, you know, like this is twelve miles away, it's
- 39:42Speaker 3: our in county rival. Uh, you know, it's one of
- 39:45Speaker 3: those things, and you know it's just you know, it's
- 39:48Speaker 3: a it's a robbery game. So you know, you got
- 39:50Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of people on both sides.
- 39:53Speaker 3: You know, a lot of you know, a lot of
- 39:57Speaker 3: gray area in terms of you know, people who live
- 40:00Speaker 3: in Marshall and go to Hallsville and people who live
- 40:02Speaker 3: in in Hallsville go to Marshall. So, uh, you know,
- 40:06Speaker 3: it's it's a rivaly game. You know they're a really
- 40:08Speaker 3: good team, well coach team. Uh, you know you kind
- 40:11Speaker 3: of see them getting better and better every week. Uh,
- 40:13Speaker 3: you know, it's one of those games for us, you know,
- 40:15Speaker 3: we have to play our game and and and get
- 40:17Speaker 3: in the mindset of of not being perfect but coming
- 40:21Speaker 3: out and you know, take advantage of the things we
- 40:25Speaker 3: can take advantage of. And then you know, when we
- 40:26Speaker 3: when we were limited, you know, limit, how bad that
- 40:29Speaker 3: mistake might be.
- 40:31Speaker 27: Yeah, exactly. And you have like around twenty three years
- 40:36Speaker 27: of experience under your belt. With that kind of depth
- 40:39Speaker 27: of experience, how do you like continue to learn and
- 40:41Speaker 27: stay ahead of the curve?
- 40:45Speaker 18: Oh?
- 40:45Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it's been a minute. You know. You take
- 40:50Speaker 3: you take all the things you want. I mean, that's
- 40:54Speaker 3: you know, if you don't you know, if you don't
- 40:57Speaker 3: accumulate uh experiences and you don't learn from them, then
- 41:01Speaker 3: it's not much good. Just because you're old doesn't mean
- 41:04Speaker 3: you're you know, all your experiences you learn from them,
- 41:07Speaker 3: you know. So that's tell I've looked at all the
- 41:11Speaker 3: whole time. You know, you you've you got to look
- 41:14Speaker 3: at what you have. I think one thing our staff
- 41:17Speaker 3: does a great job of is evaluating the players we
- 41:20Speaker 3: currently have and and trying to fit scheme to that.
- 41:23Speaker 3: And I think that's probably you know, a high school
- 41:26Speaker 3: coaching probably number or lesson we should all learn is
- 41:28Speaker 3: you know, you know, it's got to be right for
- 41:31Speaker 3: the kids. It's not right for the kids, and then
- 41:33Speaker 3: then it's not gonna work.
- 41:34Speaker 27: Yeah, last few questions for you here, coach, What metrics
- 41:38Speaker 27: are indicators besides just wins and losses do you use
- 41:41Speaker 27: to measure whether or not your program is advancing both
- 41:43Speaker 27: on and off the field.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Well, yeah, that's a good question. I mean, you know,
- 41:51Speaker 3: wins and losses absolute matter. We play at a high level,
- 41:54Speaker 3: you know, in Texas and five A football. If you
- 41:58Speaker 3: don't win, you're not gonna be a lot around long
- 42:00Speaker 3: enough to do do some of the other stuff you
- 42:03Speaker 3: want to do. You know, you you know, I you know,
- 42:05Speaker 3: I know it's someone cliche or whatever, but I think
- 42:07Speaker 3: most most high school coaches are in this to help kids,
- 42:12Speaker 3: you know, make better kids out of it. And uh
- 42:15Speaker 3: that's always the goal we have. And we see strides kids,
- 42:19Speaker 3: you know every week where a kid who is you know,
- 42:23Speaker 3: in trouble or you know, not making grades or you know,
- 42:29Speaker 3: down on themselves and and you know, getting those kind
- 42:32Speaker 3: of wins where you see a kid who's who's overcome
- 42:35Speaker 3: a lot and is able to go be successful. And
- 42:38Speaker 3: those are the you know, those are prior true measure
- 42:41Speaker 3: of a program. And then wins and losses. But you know,
- 42:44Speaker 3: and in our game, you know, you don't win enough
- 42:47Speaker 3: and you won't have a chance to do those things right.
- 42:51Speaker 27: And as you take this program into the next phase,
- 42:53Speaker 27: what's your vision for the next level for Marshall football
- 42:57Speaker 27: over the next three to five years and what are
- 42:58Speaker 27: some of the milestones that you want my head?
- 43:02Speaker 3: Well, we continue to play uh you know, uh continue
- 43:07Speaker 3: to play tough games. I mean last year we lost
- 43:09Speaker 3: to you know, three really tough teams. We lost to Longview,
- 43:11Speaker 3: Texas High and and uh south of Cliff. You know,
- 43:15Speaker 3: this year we've lost the long View in Texas High.
- 43:20Speaker 3: You know, for us to get over the hump on
- 43:22Speaker 3: some of those kind of games is ultimately the gauge
- 43:27Speaker 3: of a program. I do caution people about like just
- 43:31Speaker 3: the idea that it's a linear progression that you're just
- 43:34Speaker 3: automatically on the rise.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Uh.
- 43:36Speaker 3: You know, we we coach high school kids and uh
- 43:40Speaker 3: you know, next year we'll bring a whole new set
- 43:42Speaker 3: of challenges, uh, you know, how to get those kids
- 43:46Speaker 3: to to perform. Uh. So obviously we want to make
- 43:50Speaker 3: those trides, not not just the wins and losses, but
- 43:53Speaker 3: you know how we're you know, adding depth to the
- 43:56Speaker 3: program and and and how we're helping kids change our line.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Very well put.
- 44:01Speaker 27: Thank you so much for your time, Coach.
- 44:04Speaker 3: I appreciate you, Yes, sir, Good luck out there.

- 49:04Speaker 34: All right, welcome back, thanks for being with us. Earlier
- 49:09Speaker 34: this morning, I caught up with director of the new
- 49:12Speaker 34: film Nuremberg and co star John Slattery. I had some
- 49:17Speaker 34: self inflicted technical issues, so we're going to pick up
- 49:22Speaker 34: the interview with James Vanderbilt, the director talking a little
- 49:27Speaker 34: bit about the compelling story of the Nuremberg Trials.
- 49:31Speaker 33: But instead got orders to go to Morndorff and meet
- 49:35Speaker 33: John Slattery's character Burton Andrews. She said, look upstairs, we
- 49:39Speaker 33: have the entire surviving Nazi high command and your job
- 49:42Speaker 33: is to evaluate them to see if they would be
- 49:44Speaker 33: fit to stand. Trial was fired in the European theater
- 49:49Speaker 33: of May seventh, nineteen. But it is no less thrilling
- 49:54Speaker 33: or exciting that, you know. It's sort of we described
- 49:56Speaker 33: some of these scenes a sort of verbal gunfights, you know,
- 50:00Speaker 33: because the stakes could not be higher in terms of
- 50:02Speaker 33: what is going on, and the fact that you know,
- 50:06Speaker 33: Michael Shann's character Robert Jackson said we have to have
- 50:10Speaker 33: these trials. The US Army didn't want to have the trials,
- 50:12Speaker 33: which was something I didn't know about, but they just
- 50:14Speaker 33: want the Nazis and be done with it. And he says, no,
- 50:16Speaker 33: we have to do this. And not only did he convinced,
- 50:19Speaker 33: you know, these four countries to do it, he then
- 50:21Speaker 33: took a leave of absence from the Supreme Court, traveled
- 50:23Speaker 33: in Nuremberg and became the chief US prosecutor. So it
- 50:25Speaker 33: was almost like building the airplane while he flew it.
- 50:28Speaker 1: John, how did you get involved in the project? Pretty some,
- 50:31Speaker 1: by the way, some pretty decent actors in this film yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 9: I got a call from James and he informed me
- 50:39Speaker 9: that Russell Romie Mike Shannon were involved. And then I
- 50:46Speaker 9: read this great script, and I read the book that
- 50:49Speaker 9: my character wrote on his own and the Jack eel
- 50:52Speaker 9: High book, and I mean, this is the kind of
- 50:54Speaker 9: material that you dream of, A great story with great
- 50:58Speaker 9: actors and a director who knows is the greatest resource
- 51:03Speaker 9: on the subject, and Darius Wolski shot it. I mean,
- 51:10Speaker 9: all the effort gone into the whole proceeding. You show
- 51:13Speaker 9: up for work and you can't believe it, and it
- 51:17Speaker 9: really motivates you to bring your best work to the situation.
- 51:21Speaker 1: You have been exceptionally busy. I mean, I'm not sure
- 51:24Speaker 1: you've ever slowed down. And my guess is, and I
- 51:27Speaker 1: know you're on a project right now. Do you have
- 51:30Speaker 1: projects lined up going into the future.
- 51:35Speaker 9: I did a television series that just was picked up
- 51:38Speaker 9: for a second season of The rain Maker, so we'll
- 51:41Speaker 9: see what becomes of that. I'm currently in between assignments.
- 51:48Speaker 1: As they say, how often do you get asked about
- 51:51Speaker 1: mad Men? And I apologize ahead of time for doing that.
- 51:56Speaker 9: I'm often, I suppose, but you know, I think defiably.
- 52:00Speaker 4: So it was it.
- 52:02Speaker 9: Was a really well executed story that I'm glad I did.
- 52:08Speaker 9: I'm glad it resonated as well as it did with everybody,
- 52:11Speaker 9: and you know, I'm happy to talk about it.
- 52:14Speaker 1: When you took the job, what did you.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Expect of this job?
- 52:19Speaker 1: No, the badman job? What what did you expect?
- 52:22Speaker 4: It's funny.
- 52:23Speaker 9: Matt Weiner told me that this would be a great part.
- 52:25Speaker 9: There was about I think there were one scene, maybe
- 52:27Speaker 9: two scenes in the pilot, and he claims that I
- 52:29Speaker 9: was in a bad mood the whole time we shot
- 52:31Speaker 9: the pilot because I wasn't sure if I believed him

- 52:37Speaker 9: mean you could tell how good the script was, and
- 52:39Speaker 9: he was as good as his as his word.
- 52:41Speaker 4: The part turned out to be pretty okay.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it was okay, James. How long have you known John?

- 53:06Speaker 33: seen John on stage on Broadway, Neil Simon way, you know,
- 53:13Speaker 33: years and years and years ago. My father took me
- 53:16Speaker 33: and it was you know, so I was, you know,

- 53:52Speaker 1: I tell you know, it's funny you say that I
- 53:54Speaker 1: tell the same people all the time. All I do

- 54:15Speaker 29: You know.
- 54:15Speaker 9: You look for something that you that you that you get,
- 54:19Speaker 9: that that you figure you could that you could do
