- 0:00History has a way of remembering champions.
- 0:16The world keeps score by speed, strength, and finish lines.
- 0:21Crowds rise to their feet for medals placed around a champion's neck.
- 0:26But eternity measures victory differently.
- 0:29Heaven takes notice when a life is laid down in surrender.
- 0:34Some athletes are remembered because they outran their competition.
- 0:39Others are remembered because they outlived their generation in impact.
- 0:45Today we step into the story of a man who could outrun almost anyone on earth.
- 0:51Yet the greatest victory of his life was not found on a track.
- 0:56It was found in learning to walk in step with God.
- 1:00His name was Eric Little.
- 1:02And his life still whispers a question that every believer must eventually answer.
- 1:07What are you willing to surrender for the will of God?
- 1:11Welcome to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 1:15This is Greg Dowdy.
- 1:17Eric Little was born January 16, 1902 in China to missionary parents.
- 1:23At five years of age, he was sent to Scotland for education.
- 1:27He grew into an extraordinary athlete, a rugby star, Olympic runner, world record holder.
- 1:35By the early 1920s, Eric Little was one of the fastest men on earth.
- 1:42But Eric understood something many gifted people never learn,
- 1:46that talent is a gift God places in our hands, and purpose is what he intends to do with it.
- 1:54He once said that when he ran, he felt God's pleasure.
- 1:59But Eric also had a conviction that Sunday belonged to the Lord.
- 2:05At the 1924 Paris Olympics, Eric was expected to win gold in the 100 meters, his best event.
- 2:12But there was a problem.
- 2:14The race was scheduled on Sunday.
- 2:17Pressure came from everywhere, friends, coaches, government officials.
- 2:22This was national pride, national expectation and pressure.
- 2:27But Eric refused, not out of stubbornness, not out of rebellion, but because he was surrendered.
- 2:35Instead, he entered the 400 meter race, an event that he was not expected to win.
- 2:41On the morning of his scheduled Sunday race, Eric went to church.
- 2:46Before the 400 meter final, someone handed him a note.
- 2:49It read, them that honor me, I will honor.
- 2:52From 1 Samuel 2 verse 30.
- 2:55That day, Eric Little didn't just win.
- 2:59He shattered the world record.
- 3:02And here's the lesson.
- 3:04When you surrender what seems like your greatest opportunity,
- 3:08you make room for God's greatest purpose.
- 3:12Eric surrendered fame.
- 3:15God gave him influence.
- 3:17Eric surrendered control.
- 3:19God gave him legacy.
- 3:22The question is not, what could you achieve for yourself?
- 3:25No, the real question is, what could God do through your life fully surrendered?
- 3:31Here's what most people don't know.
- 3:33The Olympic gold medal was not the greatest chapter of Eric Little's life.
- 3:38One year later, he returned to China as a missionary.
- 3:42In 1934, he married Florence McKenzie.
- 3:46They served faithfully.
- 3:48Then war came.
- 3:49Danger came.
- 3:51Then suffering came.
- 3:53In 1941, as Japanese oppression increased, Eric sent his wife and children to safety in Canada.
- 4:00And he would never see them again.
- 4:04In 1943, Eric was placed in a Japanese internment camp with nearly 2,000 prisoners.
- 4:10There was hunger, disease, fear.
- 4:13But even there, Eric served others.
- 4:17He taught children.
- 4:18He encouraged the hopeless.
- 4:20He shared Scripture daily.
- 4:22He prayed faithfully.
- 4:24At one point, he even gave up a chance at freedom,
- 4:28allowing an expectant mother to be released instead.
- 4:32Why?
- 4:33Because surrender had become who he was.
- 4:37Eric Little eventually developed an inoperable brain tumor.
- 4:41As he lay dying, he kept pointing people to one truth,
- 4:45surrender everything to the will of God.
- 4:49In his final hours as he drifted toward a coma,
- 4:53he was heard trying to say one word, surrender.
- 4:57Friend, don't waste the life God has given you.
- 5:01The world may remember medals, but heaven remembers surrender.
- 5:07Today, the medals from 1924 are mostly forgotten.
- 5:12But Eric Little's life still speaks.
- 5:15It still challenges.
- 5:16It still calls us higher.
- 5:18So here's the question.
- 5:20If you know something is true, will you follow it?
- 5:23Even if it costs you opportunity?
- 5:25Even if it costs you popularity, comfort, even security?
- 5:29Because a surrendered life is never a wasted life.
- 5:34Give it all to God and watch what he does with it.
