- 0:59Speaker 1: you get your podcast. It's the greatest thing since Jim
- 1:03Speaker 1: Kelly Junior. For the past thirty five years, University of
- 1:07Speaker 1: Cincinnati football fans have been treated to exceptional radio color
- 1:11Speaker 1: commentary from Jim Kelly Junior, and for the past twenty
- 1:15Speaker 1: six of those years, it's been one of the choice
- 1:17Speaker 1: of my professional life to join Jim in the broadcast booth.
- 1:21Speaker 1: This past week, Jim decided to step away from the
- 1:24Speaker 1: mic for the rest of the season as he battles cancer.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'll miss him, and I know that Bearcat fans will too.
- 1:31Speaker 1: The name Jim Kelly is synonymous with Bearcat Athletics. Between
- 1:36Speaker 1: Senior and Junior, there's been a Jim Kelly at UC
- 1:41Speaker 1: as a player, coach, administrator, or broadcaster nearly every year
- 1:45Speaker 1: since nineteen forty seven. That's seventy eight years of Bearcat history.
- 1:51Speaker 1: No family has meant more. I love Jim and the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Bearcat family does too. If you believe in a higher power,
- 1:58Speaker 1: join me in prayer for his recovery and return. Now
- 2:03Speaker 1: let's get to the radio replays. The first half was
- 2:07Speaker 1: a rough one for Jake Browning as he threw a
- 2:09Speaker 1: pair of interceptions that gave the Lions the ball in
- 2:12Speaker 1: Bengals territory. Browning looking to throw his pass, who picked
- 2:18Speaker 1: off intercepted by a make Robertson defending Jamar Chase and
- 2:25Speaker 1: Detroit will take over at the seventeen of Cincinnati. Despite
- 2:29Speaker 1: the picks, the defense kept the Bengals alive. Trey Hendrickson
- 2:33Speaker 1: had a stripsack and the Lions punted three times before halftime,
- 2:37Speaker 1: allowing Cincinnati to hang in there before scoring. On the
- 2:40Speaker 1: final play of the half. Rookie long snapper William Wagner
- 2:44Speaker 1: will fire it back, trying to put Cincinnati on the board.
- 2:47Speaker 1: On the final play of the second quarter, Moneymack is ready,
- 2:51Speaker 1: so is Rico. Rico extending the hand, catches a high snap.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Here comes the kick from Evan McPherson, and he slams
- 2:58Speaker 1: it through the uprights from fifty yards away with ease.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Moneymack a perfect five for five on his field goal
- 3:06Speaker 1: tries this season, and the Bengals trail at the half
- 3:10Speaker 1: fourteen to three. Cincinnati got the ball to begin the
- 3:12Speaker 1: third quarter, but instead of scoring again to build momentum,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Browning through another backbreaking I int. Browning drops back to
- 3:20Speaker 1: throw steps into a throw up the scene intercept it
- 3:23Speaker 1: third pick of the day, Anzelonei running it back, stiff
- 3:27Speaker 1: arms Jamar Chase Jamar gets him out of bounds inside
- 3:30Speaker 1: the thirty yard line. That interception led to a touchdown,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and by the end of the third quarter, the Lions
- 3:36Speaker 1: scored another to lead twenty eight to three. Browning now
- 3:41Speaker 1: has eight interceptions in four games this year.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think most of mine are trying to force plays,
- 3:48Speaker 3: you know, frustration. I wanted to push the ball on
- 3:52Speaker 3: the field, and you know, I got to pick my
- 3:54Speaker 3: spots better through three picks that were just bad. And
- 3:58Speaker 3: there's no hiding from that. It was bad football for me,
- 4:04Speaker 3: trying to force things that aren't there and as a result,
- 4:08Speaker 3: just completely screwing over you know, the team, and it hurts,
- 4:13Speaker 3: like there's no way to hide from it. It hurts,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and you know, I did not play well enough to
- 4:19Speaker 3: give our chance a team to win, and it's just brutal.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I need to play better and there's literally no hiding
- 4:27Speaker 3: from that. And I don't care if every person on
- 4:31Speaker 3: the team says they need to play better, Like it
- 4:32Speaker 3: starts with me playing better at the quarterback position and
- 4:35Speaker 3: not putting our team in difficult situations. And there's no
- 4:39Speaker 3: hiding from that. So like I let the whole team down,
- 4:42Speaker 3: and I feel like I let the fans down, and
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, like I said, there's no hiding from that.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Like I did not play well enough to win the
- 4:49Speaker 3: game today, and I need to find ways to improve
- 4:53Speaker 3: and I will. You know, I'm never going to fold
- 4:57Speaker 3: or anything like that. Like I'm going to spend a
- 5:00Speaker 3: a lot of time here in the facility this week
- 5:02Speaker 3: trying to find ways to get better and put us
- 5:06Speaker 3: in a situation where we can win some games.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it hurts, and it should.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And you know, I feel a great responsibility to get
- 5:14Speaker 3: back on track. And I think for me, anytime I'm
- 5:16Speaker 3: going through something difficult, it's just, you know, double down
- 5:19Speaker 3: on work ethic and you know, see it all the
- 5:24Speaker 3: way through. And whether it gets better or not, you
- 5:27Speaker 3: know who that's to be determined and that's the unknown.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But I will not be because of lack of effort
- 5:35Speaker 3: and lack of dedication to trying to get better and
- 5:37Speaker 3: put our team in better situations to win.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Find we on the fourth quarter, we saw the Jake
- 5:42Speaker 1: Browning who played so well in twenty twenty three and
- 5:46Speaker 1: who rallied the Bengals to victory in Week two versus Jacksonville,
- 5:49Speaker 1: as Cincinnati scored on three straight drives of sixty three
- 5:54Speaker 1: or more yards, crowding catches, the shotgun snap looking lap
- 5:58Speaker 1: Chase was covered. Now he's scrammed trying to avoid a sack.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Browning cocks the arm, throws into the end zone. Chase
- 6:05Speaker 1: catches it. Did he get both feet down?
- 6:07Speaker 5: He did? Touchdown Bengals Jamar Chase with Barishna coough like footwork.
- 6:16Speaker 5: If he was able to get his toes down in
- 6:19Speaker 5: the end zone.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Right, I'm sure they're gonna probably take another look at it.
- 6:22Speaker 4: But tap tap, All you have to do is get
- 6:24Speaker 4: that one toe in bounds. That's a touchdown in anybody
- 6:29Speaker 4: who's league.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Third down and fourteen, the Bengals have the ball at
- 6:32Speaker 1: their own thirty six shotgun snap, four man rush. Browning
- 6:36Speaker 1: steps into a deep ball got from our.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Chases, open over the shoulder catch at the twenty, and
- 6:42Speaker 5: he will walk into the end zone for a sixty
- 6:46Speaker 5: four yard Bengals touchdown.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Big time right there, Big time play by a big
- 6:54Speaker 4: time wide receiver.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Browning back at the seven, waiting for the snap from
- 6:58Speaker 1: Karis p Ryan is in the back. Chase motions out
- 7:02Speaker 1: live with the right. Browning looking left, throws into the
- 7:04Speaker 1: end to one a low throw. T Higgins goes down
- 7:07Speaker 1: and grabs it. Touchdown.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Bengals Jake Browning with his third touchdown.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Pass up the fourth quarter. Here's Zach Taylor on the
- 7:17Speaker 1: way Jake Browning and the team finished.
- 7:21Speaker 6: I'm glad he hung in there, made some plays, forced
- 7:23Speaker 6: down the stretch. Three straight touchdown drives at the end
- 7:25Speaker 6: of the game. I'm sure a lot of people wanted
- 7:26Speaker 6: him on the bench at that point. I could hear it.
- 7:30Speaker 6: And you stuck with him, and he comes back and
- 7:31Speaker 6: has three straight drives for touchdowns. And that's that's the
- 7:34Speaker 6: Jake Browning. I know he's resilient. He'll sara versity in
- 7:37Speaker 6: the face. You can count on them and keep bouncing back. Obviously,
- 7:41Speaker 6: there's we got to protect the ball better to be
- 7:43Speaker 6: able to beat a team of that caliber. So we're
- 7:45Speaker 6: not going to run from that. But to sit here
- 7:47Speaker 6: and say I'm not proud of our football team for
- 7:49Speaker 6: the way that they fought back, that that wouldn't be true.
- 7:51Speaker 6: I'm extremely proud of these guys, the way that they
- 7:53Speaker 6: continue to fight and in the face of adversity when
- 7:55Speaker 6: it looks like it's real dim and all of a sudden,
- 7:58Speaker 6: there's some hope there that we can get this thing done.
- 8:00Speaker 6: And that's what this team's made of the five games
- 8:02Speaker 6: in that's what I'm counting on to get us through
- 8:04Speaker 6: this the last twelve games where we can go win
- 8:06Speaker 6: some games. I'm not oblivious to what goes on in
- 8:10Speaker 6: the AFC and their division. There's going to be plenty
- 8:12Speaker 6: of opportunity there if we can just get through this
- 8:14Speaker 6: storm and stick together and find a way to put
- 8:16Speaker 6: some better positions on offense together and score some points.
- 8:19Speaker 6: And I'm absolutely confident that we will get this thing
- 8:21Speaker 6: turned around and fans will want to be in the
- 8:24Speaker 6: stands because I get it right now, they're going to
- 8:25Speaker 6: want to be in the stands. And I look forward
- 8:27Speaker 6: to sold out crowds again, back to what we're used to,
- 8:29Speaker 6: and I promise you it's with every breath I got,
- 8:31Speaker 6: we're going to continue to work to get back to that.
- 8:34Speaker 1: The final score was Detroit thirty seven Cincinnati twenty four.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Browning through for two hundred and fifty one yards with
- 8:40Speaker 1: three touchdowns and three picks. Jamar Chase was his leading
- 8:44Speaker 1: receiver with six catches for one hundred and ten yards
- 8:48Speaker 1: and two touchdowns. Here's what Jamar had to say after
- 8:51Speaker 1: the game.
- 8:53Speaker 7: We got to take advantage of every job, even the
- 8:55Speaker 7: first couple of drives. You know, we just made a
- 8:59Speaker 7: late at the end. You know it's too late.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It just remind you of what you guys are capable
- 9:03Speaker 2: of doing on offense after a couple of games. Uh,
- 9:05Speaker 2: we know who we care.
- 9:06Speaker 7: But at the end of the day, we just gotta
- 9:07Speaker 7: we gotta get there. That's what it's all about. Getting there.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Two touchdown catches for you in the fourth quarter, one
- 9:13Speaker 1: for Tege. Does it begin with trying to get you
- 9:16Speaker 1: two guys the ball as much as possible?
- 9:18Speaker 7: I think we been doing that, you know. I think
- 9:20Speaker 7: it's just a tough task when everybody know what the
- 9:22Speaker 7: hell we doing.
- 9:23Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 9:24Speaker 7: So you okay, maybe we gotta work harder get it,
- 9:26Speaker 7: get the ball to us. We gotta work harder as
- 9:28Speaker 7: a unit. Uh, and make make it look easier for Jake.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Is it again, it's a last time you didn't celebrate
- 9:33Speaker 2: a Ted Chicago game? Mm v mm my rookie year.
- 9:40Speaker 1: What what's a light scoring touchdown on the most touchdown game?
- 9:42Speaker 7: Just not feeling that he just saw. I wanted to
- 9:47Speaker 7: jump in the stands, but uh, we're losing. There's no
- 9:50Speaker 7: fun in me jumping in in the stands and doing
- 9:52Speaker 7: all the extra who red who row stuff?
- 9:54Speaker 2: When we losing?
- 9:55Speaker 7: Uh, especially as a cat, you know, the guys look
- 9:57Speaker 7: at me to hold my composure and be a leader,
- 9:59Speaker 7: and and at that moment, you know, the best thing
- 10:01Speaker 7: to do is just that bareverybody, I'm telling them, good
- 10:03Speaker 7: job and work on the next possession.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Is a ball still fun for you right now? Or
- 10:07Speaker 2: is it just mostly frustrating?
- 10:10Speaker 7: Football is always fun, It's just not as fun when
- 10:12Speaker 7: you're losing. You facing adversity. We gotta keep we gotta
- 10:15Speaker 7: keep knocking the treat on til they fall. So just
- 10:18Speaker 7: gotta keep playing.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Is it hard to tamp your frustration down for the
- 10:22Speaker 2: first three quarters?
- 10:23Speaker 7: Still something good happens?
- 10:24Speaker 3: I mean, it's just nothing's happening.
- 10:27Speaker 7: I play a lot of fire underneath me, man, and
- 10:29Speaker 7: I'll play with a lot of with a lot of emotion.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Man.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I let his game. I've always did let his game.
- 10:34Speaker 7: But you know, you you you're gonna get frustrated in
- 10:36Speaker 7: this game.
- 10:37Speaker 2: You know you can.
- 10:37Speaker 7: You not gonna sit here and tell me you gonna
- 10:39Speaker 7: make a mistake and be happy about it. That's that's
- 10:42Speaker 7: that's not That's not how life works. At the end
- 10:44Speaker 7: of the day. If you make any mistake in life.
- 10:46Speaker 7: You're gonna be mad at it and try to do
- 10:47Speaker 7: it again later, but fix it. All I can do
- 10:51Speaker 7: is is just like I said, be positive, be a
- 10:53Speaker 7: cabinet to my guys, and just keep pushing forward.
- 10:56Speaker 1: It feels strange to say it after the other team
- 10:58Speaker 1: scored thirty seven points, but the Bengals defense gave them
- 11:01Speaker 1: a chance by getting a takeaway and forcing the league's
- 11:05Speaker 1: best offense to punt five times. Detroit had seven possessions
- 11:10Speaker 1: with two or fewer first downs.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Our defense has given us what we needed these first
- 11:14Speaker 6: half of these games. It's hard to stay that out
- 11:16Speaker 6: of four quarters when there's turnovers and there's punts and
- 11:19Speaker 6: there's no points going on the board, especially against teams
- 11:24Speaker 6: like that in Denver, who can do a little bit
- 11:27Speaker 6: of everything and keep you on balance and call all
- 11:29Speaker 6: their fun things when they're play caller. Season's twenty one
- 11:31Speaker 6: to three. What's the worst thing that can happen if
- 11:33Speaker 6: I call this play and it doesn't work. We're still
- 11:35Speaker 6: up twenty one to three. So we put them in
- 11:36Speaker 6: an incredibly difficult bind. And all they have done is
- 11:39Speaker 6: bow up and try to do everything they can to
- 11:41Speaker 6: keep our team in the game, and I got to
- 11:43Speaker 6: do a better job is to play caller to bail
- 11:45Speaker 6: them out.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Trey Hendrickson had two of the Bengals four sacks, giving
- 11:49Speaker 1: him four and five games, but that didn't give him
- 11:51Speaker 1: much satisfaction after the loss.
- 11:53Speaker 8: Goals are to win the games, right, and there's a
- 11:56Speaker 8: lot to correct on film, and you know, we have
- 12:00Speaker 8: a resilient group. We're still finding that team identity. There's
- 12:05Speaker 8: a lot to be proud of on defense, and there's
- 12:07Speaker 8: a lot we need to correct on defense. So you know,
- 12:10Speaker 8: keep chopping wood, it'll break. You know, it's a National
- 12:14Speaker 8: Football League. Hard work works. I'm a firm believer in that,
- 12:17Speaker 8: and you know I've done a good job of taking
- 12:20Speaker 8: care of my business. But that's not necessarily what it takes.
- 12:24Speaker 8: You know, we missed the playoffs over the last two years.
- 12:27Speaker 8: You know that's that's not where we want to be.
- 12:29Speaker 8: So I want to win as a captain and lead
- 12:31Speaker 8: these guys where we're supposed to go. So we got
- 12:33Speaker 8: a lot to fix. Like you said, there's some things
- 12:36Speaker 8: that are good on tape. You know, pat yourself on
- 12:38Speaker 8: the back for a second, and then let's look at
- 12:40Speaker 8: the place that we need to fix because you got
- 12:42Speaker 8: to forget the good things quick, you got to forget
- 12:44Speaker 8: the bad things faster.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So here's how things look in the AFC nor the
- 12:47Speaker 1: Steelers had to buy and sit on top of the
- 12:50Speaker 1: division at three and one. The Bengals are still alone
- 12:53Speaker 1: in second at two and three. Without Lamar Jackson, the
- 12:57Speaker 1: Ravens lost at home to Houston forty.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Four to ten.
- 13:01Speaker 1: As backup quarterback Cooper Rush through three interceptions. Baltimore is
- 13:05Speaker 1: one in four and faces the Rams next week. The
- 13:09Speaker 1: Browns are also one in four after losing to the
- 13:11Speaker 1: Vikings in London twenty one to seventeen. Cleveland has not
- 13:15Speaker 1: topped seventeen points in ten straight games going back to
- 13:21Speaker 1: last year. The Bengals Booth podcast is brought to you
- 13:24Speaker 1: by pay Corps, proud to be the Bengals official HR
- 13:27Speaker 1: software provider, by Alta Fiber future Proof Fiber Internet designed
- 13:31Speaker 1: elevate your home, business and community to a new level,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and by Kettering Health the best care for the best fans.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Kettering Health is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Now time for their radio guys recap Lap. The Bengals
- 13:47Speaker 1: came to life in the fourth quarter Jake Browning threw
- 13:50Speaker 1: three touchdown passes, two to Chase one to Higgins, but
- 13:53Speaker 1: in his news conference after the game, he was really
- 13:56Speaker 1: down on himself for the way he performed in the
- 13:58Speaker 1: first three quarters, basically saying he felt like his interceptions
- 14:02Speaker 1: cost the Bengals the game.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I can understand why he'd say that. You know, he's
- 14:06Speaker 4: the quarterback, he's the leader, the young questioned leader of
- 14:10Speaker 4: the football team. Now that Joe Burrow is incapacitated, unable
- 14:14Speaker 4: to do anything physically to help the football team win games,
- 14:19Speaker 4: and the team's gonna look at Jake Browning. They're gonna
- 14:21Speaker 4: look at Jake Browning for leadership, They're gonna look to
- 14:24Speaker 4: him for solid play, They're going to look to him
- 14:27Speaker 4: to throw the ball better than he did today. I'm
- 14:29Speaker 4: sure he's the first talk to him a little bit
- 14:32Speaker 4: as well. He talked about how he felt like he
- 14:36Speaker 4: threw the ball terrible. M not going to say what
- 14:39Speaker 4: he said, but it was bad. So bottom line is,
- 14:44Speaker 4: what do you do well? Do you fold your tent?
- 14:47Speaker 4: Do you you know, pack your bags up and go
- 14:50Speaker 4: home and inside you're going to quit playing football and
- 14:52Speaker 4: national football? He go, no, come back and you fight
- 14:55Speaker 4: your ass off, and I think that's what Jake brown
- 14:57Speaker 4: is going to do. I think that's in his DNA,
- 14:59Speaker 4: that's his personality, and he's going to have to do
- 15:03Speaker 4: it quickly. Got to get the worm turned. You got
- 15:05Speaker 4: to turn the season around. These three losses in a
- 15:09Speaker 4: row are all bad, one after another, one worse than
- 15:13Speaker 4: the other. So we're gonna have to change that direction quickly.
- 15:17Speaker 1: If the Bengals had not scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter,
- 15:21Speaker 1: we know it, next week would have looked like everybody
- 15:23Speaker 1: would have been saying, Jake's gotta go go out and
- 15:26Speaker 1: trade for a quarterback or start one of the guys
- 15:28Speaker 1: that you have. Some people still say that I get it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: He really played poorly for the first three quarters, but
- 15:34Speaker 1: at least in the fourth you saw reason for hope
- 15:39Speaker 1: that he can be the guy that he was in
- 15:41Speaker 1: twenty twenty three when he played well in the last
- 15:44Speaker 1: seven games.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Agreed, Dan, you know, and two guys that saw it,
- 15:48Speaker 4: lived it were right there with him while he did it,
- 15:51Speaker 4: or Zach Taylor and Dan Pitcher, and they have confidence
- 15:56Speaker 4: in Jake Browning still, and those are the two guys
- 15:59Speaker 4: that have to have confidence in Jake Browning. Those are
- 16:02Speaker 4: the two guys that Jake Browning looks to for leadership
- 16:05Speaker 4: for him and to exhibit confidence in him so he
- 16:09Speaker 4: feels like, you know, he can go out there and
- 16:12Speaker 4: perform it at his highest level. He wants to make
- 16:14Speaker 4: those guys proud of him. There's no question. He wants
- 16:17Speaker 4: to have those guys trust him that he won't turn
- 16:21Speaker 4: the football over and that he'll he'll make plays with
- 16:23Speaker 4: the football and ultimately win football games for this for
- 16:26Speaker 4: this organization. The organization believes in him, The franchise believes
- 16:30Speaker 4: in him. I know that Mike Brown and the Brown
- 16:34Speaker 4: family and the Blackburn family all believe in Jake Browning
- 16:37Speaker 4: as a backup quarterback one of the best in the
- 16:39Speaker 4: National Football League Now is everybody's saying he's one of
- 16:42Speaker 4: the top thirty two, or he'd be a starting quarterback somewhere.
- 16:45Speaker 4: You know, they would have traded him or whatever and
- 16:48Speaker 4: he'd be a starting quarterback somewhere. But honestly, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 4: I think they're happy and thankful that they didn't if
- 16:55Speaker 4: there was any trade to be talked about, that they
- 16:57Speaker 4: didn't consimate any trade because you know, Joe unfortunately went
- 17:00Speaker 4: down and Joe Burrow. Shoot, he's best quarterback in the
- 17:05Speaker 4: National Football League in my opinion, and until until somebody
- 17:10Speaker 4: else proves me wrong, and in my opinion, is going
- 17:14Speaker 4: to take a lot, going to take multiple Super Bowl wins.
- 17:18Speaker 4: You know, I just think that you give Joe Burrow
- 17:22Speaker 4: talent and opportunity to perform and show what he's got
- 17:26Speaker 4: in terms of ability to throw the football, throw it
- 17:29Speaker 4: accurately with velocity, He'll win games. Jake Browning will too.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Jake Browning has been in the classroom with Joe Burrow
- 17:37Speaker 4: for a long time and with Dan Pitcher for a
- 17:40Speaker 4: long time. That relationship is ironclad and it's.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Not going to go anywhere.
- 17:48Speaker 1: How well did the defense play? The Lions scored thirty
- 17:51Speaker 1: seven points too, came out of safety, two touchdowns on
- 17:55Speaker 1: really short fields after interceptions. Did the defense play reason
- 18:00Speaker 1: to play well against that offense?
- 18:02Speaker 4: I think so, Dan, I think honestly, you know, if
- 18:05Speaker 4: the offense had not had an off day in terms
- 18:07Speaker 4: of turnovers and safeties, and I think they could have
- 18:10Speaker 4: won the football game, or you know, been damn close,
- 18:13Speaker 4: would have been down to the wire, you know, like
- 18:15Speaker 4: a two minute drill to decide the football game. The
- 18:17Speaker 4: outcome of the game. And that's encouraging because Detroit's a
- 18:21Speaker 4: hell of a football team. Dan camb was a hell
- 18:23Speaker 4: of a coach. You know, they've got a great organization.
- 18:27Speaker 4: They've staffed and stacked that organization with tons of good
- 18:31Speaker 4: players everywhere. I mean, they don't have like, oh my god,
- 18:36Speaker 4: that guy doesn't belong in the NFL anywhere. You know,
- 18:39Speaker 4: they've they've got people that certainly do belong and perform
- 18:44Speaker 4: at a higher level than just belonging. They're good, solid,
- 18:49Speaker 4: fundamentally sound, good foundation to work from football players.
- 18:54Speaker 1: The pass protection today was leaky at times. They obviously
- 18:58Speaker 1: gave up the safety, but I didn't feel like Brownie
- 19:01Speaker 1: was under constant duress in this game. Was it an improvement?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 19:05Speaker 4: I thought there were times. There are always going to
- 19:07Speaker 4: be times. Having played that position, I know what it's like.
- 19:11Speaker 4: I mean, these guys are damn good that you're working against,
- 19:14Speaker 4: and they can any particular pass rush. They can break
- 19:18Speaker 4: you down at some point in time and finish a
- 19:20Speaker 4: play that you couldn't finish. But overall, I thought the
- 19:24Speaker 4: pass protection was solid and sound. I think Scott Peters
- 19:28Speaker 4: is He's not going to be thrilled with it. But
- 19:30Speaker 4: I think he's going to be like the worm's turning
- 19:34Speaker 4: in the right direction. We're improving. We were much better
- 19:37Speaker 4: this week in pass protection than we were the last couple.
- 19:40Speaker 1: You talked to Trey Hendrickson after the game. What kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of vibe did you get from Trey?
- 19:46Speaker 4: Just a state of I don't know, bewilderments, too strong,
- 19:51Speaker 4: confusion maybe. I mean, he just can't understand how and
- 19:55Speaker 4: why this is happening, you know, too sad game. I
- 20:00Speaker 4: congratulated him on his game, and he was, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 4: very grateful for you know, the congratulations, and I mean
- 20:08Speaker 4: that guy busts his ass now. He works his tail off,
- 20:11Speaker 4: he really does, and the game is so important to him.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Teammates are so important to him.
- 20:17Speaker 8: You know.
- 20:17Speaker 4: He's a man of faith and football and in the
- 20:20Speaker 4: Good Lord or what his life is all about. And
- 20:23Speaker 4: his family. He's got a beautiful wife and child now,
- 20:26Speaker 4: so you know, he talked about that part of it
- 20:28Speaker 4: as well, and kind of like all encompassing, you know, family, faith, teammates, football,
- 20:36Speaker 4: There's a lot going on in his life and he's
- 20:40Speaker 4: handling it and handling it well. The guy's a star,
- 20:43Speaker 4: you know, he's He's a great player, one of the
- 20:45Speaker 4: it's not the best, one of the best pass rushers
- 20:48Speaker 4: in the National Football League. And he plays the run
- 20:51Speaker 4: pretty damn solidly too. Now he's sound. This guy can
- 20:54Speaker 4: play ball.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Jake Browning took over for Joe Burrow in a particularly
- 20:58Speaker 1: tough stretch of the schedule at Minnesota at Denver on
- 21:02Speaker 1: Monday night home against Detroit, coming off of fifteen and
- 21:05Speaker 1: two season now off to Green Bay, followed by Thursday
- 21:09Speaker 1: night football against Pittsburgh. He did catch a tough draw.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I don't think there's any doubt about.
- 21:14Speaker 4: It, Bingo, no doubt about it. Dan once again, I mean,
- 21:17Speaker 4: you're you're in a stute football guy. I mean, that's
- 21:20Speaker 4: murderer's role. You know, it's like, oh my gosh, man,
- 21:24Speaker 4: it's one after another. You know, you think, okay, well, man,
- 21:28Speaker 4: now's a challenge. All those guys were good. You're in
- 21:30Speaker 4: the locker room showered after the game, and you're reflecting
- 21:34Speaker 4: back on it and thinking about the game and the
- 21:36Speaker 4: ebb and flow of the game, and it's like, oh
- 21:38Speaker 4: my gosh, there was you know, more ebb than flow.
- 21:41Speaker 4: And I'd like to get that turned around. But he's uh,
- 21:45Speaker 4: he is in a tough stretch. But that's what you
- 21:47Speaker 4: sign up for. I mean, when you decide you're going
- 21:49Speaker 4: to play in the National Football League, you're the best
- 21:52Speaker 4: of the best. I mean, he was an outstanding high school,
- 21:55Speaker 4: college and now professional football quarterback. So that's what he's
- 22:00Speaker 4: paid to do. That's that's why he makes the bucks,
- 22:03Speaker 4: the big bucks. And he understands that, and he knows.
- 22:06Speaker 4: He knows he's gonna get ridiculed. He knows he's gonna
- 22:08Speaker 4: get ripped. He knows that. You know, John Q Public's
- 22:11Speaker 4: gonna be like cat calling him as he's walking down
- 22:14Speaker 4: the street and have to keep his poise because he
- 22:18Speaker 4: can't get fiery. You don't want to have any trouble
- 22:22Speaker 4: in that regard, that's for sure. I do think I
- 22:24Speaker 4: think he's gonna I think he's gonna rebound. I think
- 22:27Speaker 4: he's there's a stretch of football, there's gonna be a
- 22:31Speaker 4: very high caliber, high level of football that Jake Ronning
- 22:34Speaker 4: is gonna play and and everybody's gonna benefit from it,
- 22:39Speaker 4: including the fans.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Up next a road trip to Green Bay for the
- 22:43Speaker 1: first time in eight years. That game kicks off at
- 22:47Speaker 1: four to five. Now time for this week's Fun Fact segment,
- 22:51Speaker 1: as we get to know a fourth round pick in
- 22:54Speaker 1: this year's draft out of Clemson. Tip for some fun
- 22:58Speaker 1: facts with rookie linebacker Barrett Carter. Born in Chicago but
- 23:02Speaker 1: raised in Sawanee, Georgia, near Atlanta. Barrett a reddit an
- 23:05Speaker 1: interview where you said, all I want to do in
- 23:08Speaker 1: life is make my parents proud. Tell us a little
- 23:12Speaker 1: bit about them, what they did or do for a living,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and what you admire and respect so much about your folks.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Yeah, So my mom, she's an interior designer. Slash do
- 23:23Speaker 2: it all mom, slash everything Mom, she really does it all.
- 23:27Speaker 2: But she's an interior designer, helps, you know, design people's houses,
- 23:32Speaker 2: and you know, people will just hire her and you know,
- 23:35Speaker 2: give her money and tell her, you know, just make
- 23:37Speaker 2: my house beautiful. And that's what she does. Then my dad,
- 23:40Speaker 2: he's a financial advisor, a wealth manager. So he's really
- 23:44Speaker 2: my personal financial advisor. So it's good to keep that
- 23:47Speaker 2: in house. But what I really love and admire most
- 23:49Speaker 2: about them is just how supportive they are. Like with
- 23:53Speaker 2: my sister and I, they really just let us figure
- 23:56Speaker 2: our own lives out, Like they didn't force us to
- 23:58Speaker 2: do anything. They just said, if y'all wanna go run
- 24:03Speaker 2: through a brick wall, then we're gonna support you like wholeheartedly,
- 24:06Speaker 2: with no no doubts, and just they just let us
- 24:08Speaker 2: figure out our own lives out. That's just what I
- 24:11Speaker 2: love and admire so much about them, and I hope
- 24:13Speaker 2: that I can be half as good as parents as
- 24:16Speaker 2: they were to my sister and I. So they're the
- 24:18Speaker 2: best older or younger sister older, she's six years older.
- 24:22Speaker 2: How old am I twin two? Yeah, she's six years
- 24:25Speaker 2: I have to do that math every time, but yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 2: she's six years older.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I do the same with my older sisters. Growing up
- 24:31Speaker 1: in Swanee, were you a big fan of the Atlanta
- 24:34Speaker 1: teams and did you go to games?
- 24:37Speaker 2: Honestly, no, I I kinda. I kinda was like a
- 24:42Speaker 2: Bears and a Cubs fan and a Bulls fan. Then
- 24:46Speaker 2: we moved to Georgia, and I I I just had
- 24:48Speaker 2: nothing but Georgia fans and Falcons fans and braves and everything.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I just had nothing, uh like butt that around me.
- 24:54Speaker 2: So I guess as I kept growing up, I just
- 24:57Speaker 2: I naturally gravitated to be a fan. But you know,
- 24:59Speaker 2: I it was a kind of a tough transition, like not,
- 25:03Speaker 2: I guess forgetting about my Chicago teams and trying to
- 25:06Speaker 2: adapt to what I was, you know, around, But I
- 25:09Speaker 2: did grow up going to some Falcons games and Braves
- 25:12Speaker 2: games and Hawgs games as well, so uh yeah, yeah
- 25:17Speaker 2: I did.
- 25:18Speaker 1: It can be fun to root for a different team
- 25:20Speaker 1: from everybody else around you. You know, you have your
- 25:22Speaker 1: own thing.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. I that's like me, Like I'm a
- 25:25Speaker 2: big Lebron fan, Like wherever Lebron goes, I'm I'm a
- 25:28Speaker 2: fan of that team. So I mean, uh yeah, I
- 25:31Speaker 2: definitely just I try to choose my own path whoever
- 25:34Speaker 2: who I'm going to support, but I did gravitate towards
- 25:37Speaker 2: those hometown teams.
- 25:38Speaker 1: We're visiting with Barret Carter. When did it become clear
- 25:41Speaker 1: that you stood out among your peers in sports?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Hm, I would say my eighth grade year in football,
- 25:50Speaker 2: Like I played football just always because it was so fun,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and I was also like the biggest one on the field,
- 25:55Speaker 2: So I was just I guess I was naturally I
- 25:57Speaker 2: don't want to say the best, but I was pretty good.
- 26:00Speaker 2: But then my eighth grade year, I was just I
- 26:02Speaker 2: was pretty dominant and that after that year, it just
- 26:04Speaker 2: really showed me that I can maybe do something with this.
- 26:07Speaker 2: And fast forward to my freshman year, I got my
- 26:09Speaker 2: first scholarship offer, and I was like, wow, like this
- 26:13Speaker 2: is really like what I've been working towards every single day,
- 26:15Speaker 2: and now I was like really becoming a reality. And
- 26:18Speaker 2: that really just made me work even harder just to
- 26:20Speaker 2: not just or to just keep stacking offers and just
- 26:23Speaker 2: keep any more attention from colleges. So I would say,
- 26:25Speaker 2: in my eighth grade and then going to my freshman year.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I know, you played offense early in high school and
- 26:30Speaker 1: then got switched to linebacker, and reportedly you were devastated
- 26:35Speaker 1: by the change. Have you grown to love linebacker?
- 26:39Speaker 2: I have, and it was I literally wanted to quit football.
- 26:42Speaker 2: But the next day when I got I switched, I
- 26:45Speaker 2: was running back receiver. I switched the linebacker, and I
- 26:48Speaker 2: was almost quit football. Then the next day I got
- 26:50Speaker 2: my first scholarship offer. So I mean, the Lord works
- 26:53Speaker 2: in mysterious ways. But I've grown to love this side
- 26:56Speaker 2: of the ball so much, and I love how how
- 26:59Speaker 2: hard it is. Like you know, I'm not saying playing
- 27:02Speaker 2: offense is easy, but you know, when you're playing defense,
- 27:04Speaker 2: you have to react to whatever the offense is doing,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and you don't know what they're running, and all you
- 27:08Speaker 2: can do is go off of your preparation, your studying
- 27:10Speaker 2: and your film and just you know, just your God
- 27:13Speaker 2: given ability. But I love that defense, that challenge and
- 27:16Speaker 2: how precise you have to be and how on point
- 27:18Speaker 2: you have to be with your keys. And I embraced
- 27:20Speaker 2: that challenge. So I wouldn't I wouldn't change my path
- 27:23Speaker 2: and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.
- 27:25Speaker 2: So I love the side of the ball playing linebacker.
- 27:28Speaker 1: You attended North Quinnet High School, that's the alma mater
- 27:30Speaker 1: of a Bengals fan favorite tight end cj Uzama. Did
- 27:34Speaker 1: you hear about CJ? From coaches and teachers and have
- 27:37Speaker 1: you ever met I don't.
- 27:39Speaker 2: We've met before because he came and spoke to us,
- 27:41Speaker 2: but like surprisingly, we actually lived in the same neighborhood.
- 27:44Speaker 2: We lived in the same neighborhood back in Georgia, but
- 27:47Speaker 2: just growing up in Swane, you always heard that name,
- 27:49Speaker 2: and you know, you always wanted to strive to be
- 27:51Speaker 2: like those older guys who paved the way. And I
- 27:55Speaker 2: just have so much respect for him, just what he
- 27:57Speaker 2: did in the league and how he always came back
- 27:59Speaker 2: to his community and just gave his time, his knowledge,
- 28:01Speaker 2: and his wisdom back. And you know, I hope that
- 28:03Speaker 2: I can be something like that and more, just keep
- 28:06Speaker 2: giving back what was instilled into me. So CJ will
- 28:10Speaker 2: always be a legend in my eyes, a big brother
- 28:12Speaker 2: and you know, a great a great man to look
- 28:15Speaker 2: up to.
- 28:16Speaker 1: You were one of the top linebackers in the country
- 28:19Speaker 1: your senior year of high school. You could have gone anywhere.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Where did you visit? Who I visited? Clemson obviously, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn,
- 28:30Speaker 2: and Ohio State. So those were like my final final five,
- 28:35Speaker 2: and I ultimately chose Clemson just because it was the
- 28:38Speaker 2: right fit for me. You know, I was looking for
- 28:40Speaker 2: a place where I can you know, grow in all
- 28:42Speaker 2: areas of life and you know, not just talking about football,
- 28:44Speaker 2: but all areas. And you know, I can truly say
- 28:47Speaker 2: I walked into Clemson aboard and I came out of
- 28:49Speaker 2: man and that's all that I was looking for. And
- 28:51Speaker 2: you know, the football stuff was going to handle itself.
- 28:53Speaker 2: But so what I did, what I was able to
- 28:56Speaker 2: accommis there was is a blessing and I wouldn't trade
- 28:59Speaker 2: those four yous for the words, but yeah, those are
- 29:01Speaker 2: those are my finalists and the place that I was
- 29:03Speaker 2: visiting it.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Certainly worked out well. You run some great teams at Clemson,
- 29:07Speaker 1: your team made it to the College Football Playoff last year.
- 29:10Speaker 1: What was the best part of your overall college experience.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I'll say I'll give one on the field and one
- 29:16Speaker 2: off the field. I'll say this is going to be surprising.
- 29:20Speaker 2: My junior year, at worst, we were four and four,
- 29:23Speaker 2: Like at one point, we were four and four throughout
- 29:25Speaker 2: the year. And if you know anything about Clemson, anything
- 29:27Speaker 2: about their fans, they're very passionate about that team, and
- 29:30Speaker 2: being four and four in Clemson is not not a
- 29:33Speaker 2: sweet place to be. And so I would say finishing
- 29:36Speaker 2: off that year and winning the Gator Bowl in the
- 29:38Speaker 2: way that we won it, like it was just special
- 29:41Speaker 2: And I cried after that game. I cried after we
- 29:43Speaker 2: won the Gator Bowl, and it was just such a
- 29:45Speaker 2: special win for you know, we were four and four
- 29:47Speaker 2: and we rallied and we finished off the season nine
- 29:49Speaker 2: and four, and it was just carry so much momentum
- 29:52Speaker 2: to the next year. So that's on the field and
- 29:54Speaker 2: then off the field, I'll say graduating, just because after
- 29:57Speaker 2: my junior year, I was unsure if I was going
- 29:59Speaker 2: to leave go or come back. And it was a
- 30:02Speaker 2: really tough decision weighing on my heart, and I decided
- 30:04Speaker 2: to come back and I finished, and I set out
- 30:06Speaker 2: that was my goal to graduate, be All American, be
- 30:08Speaker 2: a team captain. And that's what I did. And so
- 30:11Speaker 2: I came back and I graduated, and that was such
- 30:14Speaker 2: a big accomplishment for me.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Since twenty twenty, college football players have been allowed to
- 30:19Speaker 1: wear the number zero. You were the first player to
- 30:21Speaker 1: do it at Clemson.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Was that a big deal to you? Honestly, I didn't
- 30:25Speaker 2: realize it was a big deal until, like I got
- 30:29Speaker 2: to Clemson, because I committed to Clemson and I texted
- 30:33Speaker 2: coach Shwiny, like what single digit numbers y'all have available?
- 30:35Speaker 2: Because I were number one in high school, so it
- 30:37Speaker 2: was just what I was used to and now he
- 30:39Speaker 2: said zero's only thing. I was like, all right, let's
- 30:41Speaker 2: do it. And then I get to Clemson and like
- 30:44Speaker 2: they had there, like you said, there was no zeros before,
- 30:46Speaker 2: and then I was the first one, and all like
- 30:48Speaker 2: that's like all forever being history just because I'm the
- 30:51Speaker 2: first number zero. So it was special, and I hope
- 30:54Speaker 2: that you know that's just a legacy at Clemson, just
- 30:57Speaker 2: for decent players to wear that number and just keep
- 30:59Speaker 2: carrying on that tradition. So I hope that you know
- 31:02Speaker 2: that's that's that's gonna become a thing at Clemson.
- 31:05Speaker 1: We're chatting with Barrett Carter. You were a fourth round
- 31:07Speaker 1: picking this year's draft. Describe the moments leading up to
- 31:11Speaker 1: the pick and then the feeling you got when the
- 31:14Speaker 1: phone rang.
- 31:15Speaker 2: The most stressful, nerve wracking time of my whole life,
- 31:20Speaker 2: because the whole process is so like you don't know anything.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Like you can you can get all these predictions. You
- 31:26Speaker 2: can talk to your agents and acts like what are
- 31:28Speaker 2: they saying whatever, But until you get the phone call,
- 31:31Speaker 2: you don't know what's going on in that draft room.
- 31:33Speaker 2: So I mean, i'd be lying to you if I
- 31:37Speaker 2: told you all if I thought I was gonna go
- 31:38Speaker 2: fourth out. I thought I was gonna go earlier. But
- 31:41Speaker 2: you know, the Lord makes no mistakes. And you know,
- 31:43Speaker 2: when I got that phone call, it was the best
- 31:45Speaker 2: feeling in the world. Just all the weight on my
- 31:48Speaker 2: shoulders were just completely lifted, and I was like I
- 31:50Speaker 2: was immediately, just like, let's get to work. Like I
- 31:53Speaker 2: cried so much Friday night because I didn't get my
- 31:56Speaker 2: name called and I was pissed off, and I was
- 31:59Speaker 2: just so much, so many different emotions. But when I
- 32:03Speaker 2: saw I think it was a five one three area code,
- 32:05Speaker 2: that's yeah. So I saw the five one three and
- 32:07Speaker 2: I saw Cincinnati, I was like, let's do it, Like,
- 32:09Speaker 2: let's get to work. And I was just ready from
- 32:11Speaker 2: that moment on and I'm just ready to just leave
- 32:13Speaker 2: my leave my market in Cincinnati. All right, a few.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Wild card topics to wrap things up. It looks like
- 32:19Speaker 1: you did a ton of community service when you were
- 32:22Speaker 1: at Clemson, particularly with schools.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Why I remember, I was, you know, that little kid
- 32:27Speaker 2: and seeing the older athletes come in and read to
- 32:30Speaker 2: us and spend time with us, and I just thought
- 32:32Speaker 2: that was the coolest thing, because I was, I was,
- 32:34Speaker 2: I just admired that. I admire that, you know, they
- 32:37Speaker 2: took the time out of their day when they could
- 32:38Speaker 2: have been doing anything else and they came to spend
- 32:41Speaker 2: time with us. And I made a promise to myself,
- 32:43Speaker 2: like when I get to that, when I get to
- 32:46Speaker 2: that age, I'm gonna give back and I'm gonna I'm
- 32:48Speaker 2: gonna be that figure that those kids look up to
- 32:50Speaker 2: and those kids love, and you know, whatever it may be,
- 32:53Speaker 2: but it's just a it's a promise that I made
- 32:56Speaker 2: to myself. Just I'm gonna get back my time. I'm
- 32:59Speaker 2: gonna get back to nowedge was instilled into me, and
- 33:01Speaker 2: now I'm gonna I'm gonna do that for us to
- 33:03Speaker 2: rest of my life.
- 33:05Speaker 1: If you could swap jerseys with any player in NFL history,
- 33:11Speaker 1: who are you swapping jerseys with?
- 33:14Speaker 2: Probably ray Lewis. Just he's someone that I grew up
- 33:19Speaker 2: just admiring and watching, especially when I switched the linebacker,
- 33:23Speaker 2: Like a big thing for me was the mindset and
- 33:26Speaker 2: like the mentality that you have to have to play
- 33:28Speaker 2: that position. He's just epitome of that. Like he's he
- 33:32Speaker 2: doesn't matter who you are, He's gonna go after you
- 33:34Speaker 2: and try to try to hunt you. So I would
- 33:36Speaker 2: say ray Lewis, And I actually talked to him last
- 33:40Speaker 2: last year in the summer. Coach Sweeney put me on
- 33:42Speaker 2: the phone with him, and it was I was just
- 33:44Speaker 2: so starstruck. I didn't know what to say. But he's
- 33:46Speaker 2: someone that I grew up washing and grew up admiring,
- 33:48Speaker 2: so I would say Ray Lewis all right.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Final fun fact for Barret Carter. This one's kind of deep.
- 33:53Speaker 1: If you could meet anyone in history, living or deceased,
- 33:59Speaker 1: who would that person be?
- 34:01Speaker 2: I would say, I have two, So I have to
- 34:03Speaker 2: give an athlete in a non athlete, I'll say Lebron
- 34:06Speaker 2: James because that's just that's my that's my guy. I
- 34:09Speaker 2: grew up watched, Yeah, Lebron for sure. Lebron James and
- 34:12Speaker 2: Denzel Washington. He's my favorite actor. I just watched both
- 34:16Speaker 2: or all three Equalizer movies and that just made me
- 34:21Speaker 2: love him even more so. Lebron James and Denzel Washington.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Denzel is so good, so good, so.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Good, the best, not that Lebron isn't. But I'm really
- 34:31Speaker 2: with you, Denzel. You can't go on with either, so
- 34:34Speaker 2: I'll say those two.
- 34:35Speaker 1: This has been great. Really appreciate your time.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Best of luck the rest of the year. Yeah, sorry,
- 34:38Speaker 2: thanks for having me.
