- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Houston Colt 45s for an exhibition game on April 5, 1964.
- 0:14Houston was managed by Harry Kraft, who had led the team all three years of the franchise's existence.
- 0:20The Yankees entered 1964 under manager Yogi Berra.
- 0:23Yogi had just retired as a player and the Yankees needed a new leader to replace Ralph Hauk,
- 0:27who moved to the front office as general manager after losing the World Series in 1963.
- 0:32This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jerry Coleman and Joe Gargiola.
- 0:38Phil Rizzuto typically announced the Yankees' games on the radio,
- 0:41but this game appears to have also been broadcast on TV because you can hear Jerry Coleman at one point say,
- 0:47Phil's over on TV right now.
- 1:17John Beakley is in right field in the sixth spot.
- 1:20Walt Bond is playing left field. He'll be hitting seventh.
- 1:24John Bateman will do the catching, hitting in the eighth spot.
- 1:27And Jim Owen will be doing the pitching.
- 1:31The lineup for the Yankees, Tony Kubeck leading off playing shortstop.
- 1:36Bobby Richardson at second base, hitting second.
- 1:39Roger Maas in right field.
- 1:41Mickey Mapple in the clean-up position, playing center field.
- 1:44Johnny Tress will be in left field, hitting fifth.
- 1:47Johnny Blanchard doing the catching today, Alston Howard getting a rest.
- 1:51Blanchard will be hitting in the sixth spot.
- 1:54And Hector Lopez will be playing third base.
- 1:57And this is the first game that Lopez has played at third base in two years.
- 2:01So Hector will be at third, he'll be hitting seventh.
- 2:04Pedro Gonzalez will be at first in the eighth spot.
- 2:07And Bud Daley, as we mentioned before, will be doing the pitching.
- 2:11The umpires for the game, behind the plate, American League umpire Frank Umont.
- 2:17Mel Steiner of the National League at first.
- 2:20Cal Drummond of the American League will be at second.
- 2:24And Chris Teletutas of the National will be at third.
- 2:27So that's the way the lineup shape up here as the Colts and the Yankees are just a few moments from getting underway here.
- 2:35This will be the next to the last Sunday that the Yankees will be an exhibition play.
- 2:42They'll be opening the season on April 14th, Tuesday, against the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:47And that will be the Gala Welcome Yogi Day.
- 2:51Also on opening day we'll see the presentation of the American League's Most Valuable Player Award to Alston Howard
- 2:57and World Series Awards for American League Championship Awards to the members who are on the 1963 Yankee pennant winning team.
- 3:08So why don't you make a point of coming on out on April 14th, Tuesday, to see the Boston Red Sox, Big Dick Stewart, Bill Mamboquette,
- 3:17and many of the other fine stars there, the American League batting champion, Carl Yastrimsky.
- 3:23As the Yanks and the Red Sox open up the 1964 campaign at Yankee Stadium.
- 3:31I have a few notes here that might be of interest to you people as we're waiting for the umpires to come out.
- 3:39The Yankees will be playing an exhibition game at 7.30 p.m. in Denver on Monday evening, June the 8th.
- 3:49And this will be sort of a homecoming for several of the Yankees who played in their minor league days at Denver.
- 3:55Bobby Richardson, Sonny Kubeck, Johnny Blanchard, and Ralph Terry.
- 3:59They all played under Ralph's house there when the Denver Bears were in a working agreement with the New York Yankees.
- 4:12And checking this over here we have Art Fliham Jr., the Yankee ticket representative, will be in the upstate New York area.
- 4:23He'll be opening for the 1964 season tomorrow in Albany.
- 4:26And he can be contacted at the Center Inn or by phone at HE67181.
- 4:32So all of you people who are in the Albany area and would like to make plans to attend Yankee Stadium and see one of the games this summer,
- 4:41while you may be also in the process of visiting the World's Fair, contact Art Fliham Jr.
- 4:48and he'll be in Albany tomorrow at the Center Inn or by phone at HE67181.
- 4:57Also, when you attend the big Yankee opener on Tuesday, April the 14th, and other Yankee games,
- 5:02be sure to pick up a copy of the all-new Yankee scorecard.
- 5:06It's more than ever this year, and up to each series averages of all the players will be in there.
- 5:11And they'll be printed so that you'll have an up-to-the-minute report on how each player is doing on the Yankee ball club.
- 5:18There'll be many other new features as well, and the scorecard still will be only 15 cents.
- 5:22Yep, 15 cents, that's all.
- 5:24So they'll be available only at Yankee Stadium.
- 5:28For you fans living in the upstate New York area, the Yankees are happy to announce, as we just mentioned before,
- 5:34that we'll be bringing you all of these games over our Yankee Network.
- 5:39We hope that you enjoy them as much as we enjoy bringing them to you.
- 5:42Now the umpires, along with Yogi Berra, the manager of the Yankees, and Jenny Adair,
- 5:47who's the coach for the Houston Colts, are congregating at home plate.
- 5:52That umpire in this game, Frank Umont.
- 5:56Umont has been with the Yankees through most of the spring training season,
- 6:00or at least some midway mark on.
- 6:08Looks like we're going to have a pretty good crowd here today.
- 6:13And we have had some magnificent weather the last three or four days.
- 6:19Say, a great day for baseball, a great day to go to the beach, a great day for golf.
- 6:25This is the kind of weather that all of the ballplayers and the managers who come to Florida like to see.
- 6:32Many times when you run into tough weather in the spring,
- 6:35as we did on our trip to the West Coast when we were headquartering in Tampa,
- 6:40we ran into some rain, two days of rain, and then we had some very cool weather.
- 6:46It makes it tough for the manager because it upsets their pitching rotation.
- 6:50And usually the youngsters who are trying to make the pitching staff are those who suffer
- 6:54and just set back and lose their turn.
- 6:56So we're back on the good weather beam right now, and the Yankees have taken the field.
- 7:00And there's Bud Daley, who's struggling to regain the form that he had a few years ago
- 7:07and trying to gain a position on this Yankee ball club.
- 7:09Bud actually has to fight for a job.
- 7:11He picked only one inning last year, and that was in the opening game of the 1963 season in Kansas City.
- 7:18It was a very cool day, and something snapped in Daley's arm.
- 7:23Consequently, that led to an operation, and he has been on the comeback trail.
- 7:29He pitched five innings the other day and did a pretty good job.
- 7:32So he'll be facing the Houston Colts daily, and Blanchard throwing it back and forth, getting ready.
- 7:38And we are just about set to go.
- 7:40The next batter will be Eddie Casco, the shortstop for the Houston Colts.
- 7:54I'd like to remind all of you Yankee fans, those of you on our network, as well as those of you in New York,
- 7:59that there's a new starting time on Sundays at Yankee Stadium.
- 8:03For years, it used to be a 2 p.m. starting time.
- 8:06Now it's down to 1 p.m., so those Yankee games will be starting a half hour earlier on Sundays.
- 8:12And also, there are six new suburban night games.
- 8:16These will be played on Thursday nights, single game, 6 o'clock.
- 8:21It'll give you people a chance who are within driving distance of the stadium to come on down,
- 8:26watch a ball game, and get home at a fairly early hour.
- 8:31Suburban night starts 6 p.m. The new Sunday starts 1 p.m.
- 8:36Regular night games normally will be at 8 o'clock.
- 8:43Now Frank Umont is looking up there.
- 8:47We're about set to go.
- 8:50Coaching at first base for the Houston Colts, Jimmy Adair, and at third base, Lumen Harris.
- 8:57Lumen Harris has been associated with Paul Richards for many years.
- 9:02He was with them when Richards took over the Orioles.
- 9:05He was with them when Richards was with the White Sox.
- 9:07And when Paul Richards went to Houston, Lumen Harris probably with him.
- 9:15There's a little Nellie Fox down there shouting at a casco, a little encouragement.
- 9:20And we're all set to go.
- 9:21Now, as Bud Daly, the left-hander, on the mound for the Yankees,
- 9:25gets ready to pitch the first ball of this ball game.
- 9:27And here it comes, the curveball way outside to Johnny Blanchard, who picks it off.
- 9:32One ball to count.
- 9:37Daly has a fine earned run average so far this spring, 2.08.
- 9:42The one ball delivery to Casco is called strike one, one ball and one strike.
- 9:46Daly has pitched 13 innings, given up 11 hits and only four runs, three of those earned.
- 9:53Eight base on balls and three strikeouts, so he's off on the right direction.
- 9:57Daly delivers. Casco swings and fouls the back.
- 10:00Strike two, one ball, two strikes to Eddie Casco.
- 10:10Last year, Casco was with the Cincinnati Reds.
- 10:13Played in 76 games, compiled a 2-41 batting average, had three home runs, only 10 RBIs.
- 10:18Right-hand batter wears glasses.
- 10:20Daly started to pitch and then stopped, of course, there's no balk in a situation like that when there's no one on.
- 10:27Daly losing his balance, or possibly it was, if Johnny Blanchard was not quite ready to receive the ball.
- 10:32Now here's the one-two pitch to Casco, the knuckleball outside, 2-2 to count.
- 10:44Bud Daly, into the windup, the 2-2 delivery to Casco, it's swung on and missed, strike three.
- 10:51So Daly starts off with an impressive strikeout over the leadoff batter.
- 10:55Eddie Casco, there's one down, and out here comes Nellie Fox.
- 11:00The San Diego Panthers, number two, Nellie Fox.
- 11:04Nellie Fox, the American League's most valuable player in 1959.
- 11:08Out of the year, the White Sox won the pennant.
- 11:10Boy, what a ballplayer this fellow's been.
- 11:13He's been in the major leagues to stay since 1948.
- 11:17He had a chance in 1946, but only, check that, 1947, but only seven games under his belt.
- 11:25Daly delivers to Fox and backs him off the plate, one ball to count.
- 11:31Nellie, one of the great aggressive infielders in the American League for over a decade.
- 11:38This will be his 16th, 17th season in the major leagues.
- 11:42Now the one ball delivery to Fox, drilled right at Bobby Richardson's second base,
- 11:46and that's all knuckled out there as Richardson sort of sidesteps it for a minute.
- 11:50It looked like he was fighting it, but he got it.
- 11:55Two up and two down here.
- 11:57Bud Daly moving along nicely, and now here comes Pete Reynolds.
- 12:01Reynolds, who had some great years with the Washington Senators,
- 12:04and then the Boston Red Sox, led the American League in hitting.
- 12:08At one point, that was in 1960.
- 12:12Fouls went off to the left of third base in foul territory.
- 12:15Hector Lopez getting under it. He's got it.
- 12:17And that takes care of the Colts here in the top of the first inning.
- 12:19Three up, three down.
- 12:21The score after a half inning of play, the Colts nothing, the Yanks coming to bat.
- 12:25You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 12:39Wow, what a fear that Valentine.
- 12:42You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 12:46Wow, what a fear that Valentine.
- 12:50Fear has to be long-sweeping around.
- 12:54Three up, three down.
- 12:57You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 13:01You get a smile every time.
- 13:03You get Valentine's here.
- 13:29In the last half of the first inning, it'll be Johnny Kubek leading off for the Yankees.
- 13:32Here's his ball game just getting underway here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida under beautiful, sunny, balmy skies.
- 13:32None of the Yankees have been tearing that fight off of the ball.
- 13:38No score.
- 13:52They're batting 2-0-7 as a team.
- 13:55Yesterday, they came up with nine runs, five of them in the ninth inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox.
- 14:01Now, Jim Owens, the right-hander on the mound, delivers a fastball called strike one to Tony.
- 14:06Yankees have a few injuries. Phil Linds had jammed his thumb in a slide, is unable to play.
- 14:11And Joe Pepitone, who was hit by a pitch from left-hander Al Jackson of the Mets a week or so ago, is still out there.
- 14:18There's a hopper.
- 14:19Reynolds knocks it down.
- 14:20It goes to Owens' home time, a nice play by Pete Reynolds.
- 14:23If he knocks the ball down, it was heading for right field.
- 14:26And then picked it up and got Kubek. So there's one out.
- 14:29And now, here's Bobby Richardson.
- 14:56Bateman, for a minute, looked as though he might have had a chance to grab hold of that ball before it went foul.
- 15:02Richardson did not leave the plate, and had he got it, Bobby would have been a sure-out.
- 15:07But if you're the catcher running out after a ball like that, we go back to the plate.
- 15:12And a guy like Richardson at the plate, that's a base hit.
- 15:15That ball dribbled down there about 35 feet.
- 15:19Oh, and the one-strike delivery to Bobby is a turn of the flow. Ball one. One ball and one strike.
- 15:29One-one the count. Richardson, second batter for the Yankees.
- 15:32We're in the last of the first inning.
- 15:34Oh, and delivers to Bobby, a line drive fly going toward right field.
- 15:38Moving under and getting it is Johnny Wheatley.
- 15:42Bobby hit that ball well.
- 15:44Got a little bit too much loft to it, so there's two down, and here's Roger Maas.
- 15:49Maas came up with two big hits yesterday. He was way down.
- 15:53Getting at 164.
- 15:58Roger Maas.
- 16:00Facing Jim Owen.
- 16:02We're in the last of the first. No score in the ball game.
- 16:04Owen delivers to Maas. He fouls it back, strike one.
- 16:11Owen initially came up with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1955.
- 16:18In 1963 he was with Cincinnati, and then also part of that season spent with San Diego.
- 16:26Maas takes low and outside. One ball. One ball and one strike to Roger.
- 16:31Owen's a major leaguer for nine years, has a combined record of 24 wins and 48 losses in the nine-year span.
- 16:39Owen delivers to Maas, and it's outside. Two balls and a strike. Two on the count.
- 16:45Mickey Mantle in the on-back circle for the Yankees.
- 16:49Win once again as it's the Vail here blowing toward that left field fence, saving the right-hand hitter.
- 16:54Maas drills one, and nice play by Reynolds right down that line, and he races Maas to the back for the put-out.
- 17:00Pete Reynolds making a nice play going through the line.
- 17:04That takes care of the Yankees here in the last half of the first inning. Three up, three down.
- 17:10The score after the first inning of play, the Yankees nothing and the Colts nothing.
- 17:16You know, tickets for all the 1964 Yankee home games are on sale right now.
- 17:21There are several simple ways to get your choice of seats for the big games this season.
- 17:25You can buy tickets over the counter at the Yankee Stadium Advanced Ticket Office, which is open daily Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5.
- 17:31There's plenty of free parking while you do your ticket shopping.

- 17:47Box and reserve seat reservations also are available at all strapped restaurants in the greater New York area.
- 17:53Don't forget you can order by mail also if you want to. Just send your money ordered to the ticket manager along with your order.
- 18:00Take care of the New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium, Bronx 51 New York.
- 18:04Be sure to enclose your check or money order and don't forget to include your own name and address.
- 18:08Box seats are at $3.50. Reserve seats are $2.50, all taxes included.
- 18:13And one other thing, please add 25 cents to your total order to cover mailing charges.
- 18:19In the top of the second inning, no score on the ball game, Bud Daley against Jim Lowen.
- 18:25Here's Jim Lowen, the center fielder. Win right hand batter. W-Y-N-N.
- 18:41Fairly compact athlete. Hits the first pitch into short left field. Tommy Trash getting under it easily.
- 18:47Takes it and we've got one away. For a moment it looked like there was a little more mustard on that ball, but only went out there about 290 feet.
- 18:54So there's one down and now here's Bob Aspermati.
- 19:01Bob has been with the Houston Colts since 1962, spending his third year. He hit only 214 last year.
- 19:11Played in 136 games. Right hand batter, he's the brother of Ken Aspermati.
- 19:16Takes a strike in there. One strike to count to Bob Aspermati. Born in Brooklyn, New York, 6 feet 285. Big guy.
- 19:27Hits one out down the line. Lopez over. Behind third, it's called foul.
- 19:33Nothing in two to count to Aspermati.
- 19:39Yankees are using Gonzalez at first base today.
- 19:46And Hector Lopez at third.
- 19:50Aspermati hits a two hopper to Kubek at short. Throw to first is in time, two down.
- 19:56Two up and two down here on the top of the second inning.
- 19:59Those are the kind of ground balls the infielders like. You know, they hug the ground and all of a sudden take that nice big hop about felt high.
- 20:07They're far enough out of course so that they have time to gauge it.
- 20:10Sometimes when they take those big hops at the last minute, they end up as errors.
- 20:16Now Johnny Weakley, the right fielder.
- 20:20Right hand batter.
- 20:23Ailes from New Orleans. Daly delivers to Weakley. A curve ball that misses inside. Ball one.
- 20:28Six feet tall, 200 pounds. Big guy.
- 20:34Here at Houston, at 225, three home runs, 14 RBI.
- 20:38As Daly delivers, good called strikes. One ball and one strike.
- 20:43Bud Daly, boy, he's sharp today, I'll tell you that.
- 20:46Hitting those corners.
- 20:49Daly into the lineup. The 1-1 pitch to Weakley. On the ground to Kubek.
- 20:53He's got the bobble hit. He's up with it again. The throw is not in time.
- 20:57And that'll have to go as an error to Tony Kubek.
- 21:00He threw the ball in the dirt, although the throw even had Pedro Gonzalez come up with it.
- 21:05Would not have been Weakley who went down that line pretty good.
- 21:08So Tony Kubek charged with the error. Weakley safe at first.
- 21:13Now here's the left fielder, Big Walt Bond.
- 21:16Well, he's not trying to get a guy.
- 21:19Big left hand batter. Came up with a Cleveland Indian two years ago.
- 21:23Six feet six, 220 pounds.
- 21:27This is a fellow that the Indians hoped would carry them to, or into contention in a possible flag a few years ago.
- 21:35He takes a strike called from Bud Daly.
- 21:39Straight away stance, fairly close.
- 21:42Weakley on at first base, two down. No score in this game. Top of the second.
- 21:46Curve ball swung on in this strike two.
- 21:50That was a flat sidearm changeup curveball and Bond was way out in front of it.
- 21:57Walt had trials with the Indians in 60, 61, and 62 and was unable to stick.
- 22:09Curveball sidearm is way outside, ball one. One ball, two strikes.
- 22:14Last year at Jacksonville in the international leg, Walt had 25 home runs with 82 RBIs at 276.
- 22:24Pedro Gonzalez playing behind Weakley at first base.
- 22:29Walt's on the batter. The one-two delivery is a curve that's way outside. Two to the count. Two balls, two strikes.
- 22:37The field playing deep and shaded slightly to the right. The outfield the same.
- 22:48Daly shakes Blanchard off for one sign. He's ready to go.
- 22:54Set. Deliverers to Bond, who fouls it straight back on the screen, and the count holds at two-two.
- 23:03Tomorrow night the Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers will be going at it here in Fort Lauderdale.
- 23:08It will be the first night game here in Fort Lauderdale.
- 23:12We'll be on the air at 7.55 game time at 8 o'clock and we'll be on AM and FM.
- 23:22Always an exciting contest when the Yanks and the Dodgers get together.
- 23:27Two-two delivery to Bond is fouled back behind the plate. The count once again remains at two-and-two.
- 23:42Walter Bond, born October the 19th, 1937 at Denmark, Tennessee.
- 23:50Two-two delivery to Walt. Oh, it hits him. Where did it hit him?
- 23:53It looks like it got him right on the right finger there.
- 23:58Boy, that ball was way inside. Bond had no chance to get out of the way.
- 24:02He doesn't look like he's injured in any way.
- 24:05But he started to go down and that ball was about belt-high.
- 24:08Had no chance to get out of the way and hit him on the right wrist apparently.
- 24:12So Bond is safe at first base after being hit by the pitcher.
- 24:16Going down to second is Johnny Wheatley and now here's John Bateman, the catcher.
- 24:27John Bateman, right-hander. He's a young fella.
- 24:31Hitting an even hundred. He's had two hits and 20 appearances at the plate this spring.
- 24:36Hits the first pitch high in the air out behind second base.
- 24:38Kubek Richardson, mantle conversion. Kubek calls for it, takes it, and that takes care of the Colts here in the top of the second.
- 24:45No runs, no hits. One Yankee error, two men left.
- 24:48The score after an inning and a half, the Colts nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 24:56Last half of the second inning, Jim Owen continues his warmup on the mat.
- 25:00He'll be facing Mickey Mantle, Tommy Trash, and Johnny Blanchard in that order.
- 25:05Mantle batting left-handed against the right-handed Jim Owen.
- 25:10Mantle, a 235 batter that's far this spring. Eight hits and 34 at bats.
- 25:17That's 12 walks. And he leads the club and home runs with two.
- 25:21Nobody except Mantle has hit more than one.
- 25:24Nick swings and let's us strike one.
- 25:28The Yankees have only a total of nine home runs so far this spring, and they've won nine games and lost 11.
- 25:34That's a total of 20 games.
- 25:37Owen delivers the Mantle a fastball inside. Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 25:43The other home run hitters are Pepitone, Gonzalez, Blanchard, Kubeck, Boyer, Lopez, and Trash.
- 25:52And Maris is in there. There's a strike in there. One ball, two strikes to Mickey Mantle.
- 25:58One ball, two strikes. Mantle from the left side. There's Owen.
- 26:10The defenders line up. There's a long drive running into the right center coming in and making a big play as the center fielder Jim Wynn.
- 26:17How do you like that?
- 26:20Boy, he stood the stands on his here for that one.
- 26:23That ball lined up in the alley in right center. Young Jim Wynn coming over and cutting in a little bit.
- 26:30It looked like he was going to get through and stuck out his glove and got it about a foot off the ground.
- 26:34A great play to Rob Mantle with an extra base hit.
- 26:38One down and here's Tommy Tresh.
- 26:43Tresh takes outside. Ball one.
- 26:46Tresh hitting at 178 for 47.
- 26:52A great play by the center fielder Jim Wynn to Rob Mantle.
- 26:57Inside, Tresh two balls, no strikes.
- 27:02Two-nothing to count.
- 27:07Cold infield shaded to the right. No one goes into the lineup. The 2-0 delivery takes it in their strike call.
- 27:13Two balls, one strike, one down. No score on this ball game. We're in the last half of the second inning.
- 27:20Tommy Tresh batting from the left side.
- 27:24That deliver swung on a missed strike two.
- 27:28Two-two to count.
- 27:35Tresh last year did 269 with 25 home runs, 71 RBIs.
- 27:42The 2-2 delivery by Owen swung on a missed strike three and he got him.
- 27:46That's the first strikeout recorded by Jim Owen. Two up and two down here in the last half of the second inning.
- 27:52And here's Johnny Blanchard who's doing the catching today.
- 27:56Moving right along here.
- 28:05Owen Wynn delivers to Blanchard and it's high, ball one. One ball to count.
- 28:11Johnny Blanchard who has moved into the number two catching spot behind Elston Howard.
- 28:17Getting his share of work.
- 28:20The one ball delivery to John is low. Two and 0 to count. Two balls, no strikes.
- 28:28Whitey Ford is doing the coaching at first base and over at third, Jimmy Gleason.
- 28:35Owen into the windup. The 2-0 delivery is outside. Three and 0 to count. Three balls, no strikes.
- 28:41Johnny Blanchard with two down and nobody on here in the last of the second.
- 28:46In the on deck circle, Hector Lopez playing third base for the first time in over two years today.
- 28:53The 3-0 delivery to Blanchard. Call strikes. Three and one.
- 29:01Jim Owen just away that one in there. Blanchard taking all the way.
- 29:05Fox is playing almost closer to first than he is to second on Blanchard.
- 29:10And he's in the right spot. It's a ball bouncing off his chest. He jumps on it and fires the first.
- 29:15Nellie Fox was playing that 30 feet from first base and that ball, had he stood there, would have hit him in the nose.
- 29:21And it did. It did bounce off of his chest, but he managed to make the foot out.
- 29:25So for the Yankees in the last half of the second inning, three up and three down.
- 29:29Four after two. Two to nothing. The Yanks nothing.
- 29:32Time now, two o'clock.
- 29:35Attention, color 13, Jim Fox.
- 29:40In the top of the third inning, it'll be Jim Owen leading off to the colt here. No scoring again.
- 29:45Bud Daley on the map for the Yankees. A curve ball that calls strike one.
- 29:53Jim Owen batting from the right-hand side facing Bud Daley.
- 29:59Owen's six feet tall, 200 pounds. He's a big guy, squarely built, takes outside.
- 30:04One ball, one strike. One-one to count, Owen.
- 30:09Only two baserunners in this ball game, both of them colts, none of them on by virtue of a base hit.
- 30:14There's a dribbler out toward second base. Bobby Richardson coming in, scoops it up, fires to Gonzalez, and there's one away.
- 30:22One down, and the batter is Eddie Casco, who led off this ball game by striking out, the only strikeout recorded by Daley.
- 30:33Casco's a pretty good hitter.
- 30:38Had a great year with Cincinnati a few years ago, where he was at or above the 300 mark for most of the season.
- 30:47Daley winds delivers to Casco, takes it inside, ball one.
- 30:56Casco, born in Linden, New Jersey, now resides in Richmond, Virginia, succeed 185 pounder.
- 31:03Worst classes that we mentioned before, hits the first pitch on two hops and two low-pitchers win it.
- 31:09Well, Dexter Lopez had a tough one, a draft cutter, and that second hop didn't come up.
- 31:16Out of the roulette, they give Lopez an error, so that's the second Yankee error in this ball game.
- 31:23Boy, that's tough, particularly when you've been standing out on left field for two years.
- 31:29Dexter Lopez, charged with the error, one down, Casco at first, and here comes Nellie Fox, who lined out to Bobby Richardson in the first inning.
- 31:41Here with Chicago, Fox at 260, hits the first pitch in the straightaway center, Mantle coming in and goes back a little bit, and he got it.
- 31:49And he just did get it.
- 31:51Mickey Mantle started in on the ball, thinking that it was going to be hit lower than it was, and he had to really retreat and hauled that thing down on a leaping backhanded catch.
- 32:01Boy, that was a double or a triple for sure, had that ball got away from Mantle.
- 32:06Oh, Nellie Fox is out of there, as he's hit the ball sharply twice off of Bud Daley, lined out to Richardson in the first, and then a line drives to Mantle here in the third.
- 32:16Now Pete Ruddles, who popped the third, hits the first pitch high in the air in the short left field.
- 32:21Tommy Truss getting under it, takes it easily, and the Colts are out of there in the top of the third inning.
- 32:28For the Colts, no runs, no hits, one Yankee air, one man left, and the score after two and a half, Houston nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 32:37You get a smile every time with a Valentine, wow what a beer that's Valentine. You get a smile every time with a Valentine, wow what a beer that's Valentine.
- 33:02You get a smile every time with a Valentine, wow what a beer that's Valentine.
- 33:32Coming on, we move into the last half of the third inning.
- 33:45Bottom third of the Yankee order, Lopez, Gonzalez, and Daley, scheduled to hit off of Jim Owen.
- 33:51The Yankees have yet to put a base runner on.
- 33:55In fact, neither side has acquired a base hit at this point. Hector Lopez hits one toward Fox, he tries to backhand it, knocks it down, dribbles out toward center field, and Hector Lopez chalks up the first base hit of this ballgame.
- 34:09Lopez hitting a sharp ground ball to the right of Nellie Fox, play for first.
- 34:16Owen's giving up the first hit of this game.
- 34:19Now here's Pedro Gonzalez.
- 34:22Pedro was originally scheduled to play third base today.
- 34:28Swings and fouls it back, oh boy and that hurt the catcher, John Bateman, he got that right on the right side.
- 34:36That's one thing about catching, those fellas take a beating.
- 34:40You know a lot of things you don't even see, fouls tips that go off the knee or off the toe or off the thigh.
- 34:47John Bateman taking a little time.
- 34:53And right now, young Mr. Bateman is not feeling as try as he likes.
- 34:59Bending over a little bit to get the sensation and the circulation flowing again.
- 35:05One strike to Kanta Gonzalez.
- 35:08Hector Lopez on at first base, no score in the ballgame, we're in the last of the third.
- 35:12Nobody out here in the third inning for the Yankees, that's Owen's deliver to Gonzalez, he fouls it at the plate again, nothing in two to count.
- 35:19No balls, few strikes.
- 35:23The Yankees have the only base hit in this game and also have committed the only errors, they've got two.
- 35:33Nothing in two to count.
- 35:36Kim Owen pitching low curve ball to Gonzalez, trying to get him to hit that ball on the ground.
- 35:41Comes another one, hit high in the air to straight away center.
- 35:44Jimmy Wynn saves it but his glasses takes it one way.
- 35:50Young Mr. Wynn was a shortstop last year, playing the outfield this season and he's playing it like he played it all of his life.
- 35:57Made a great catch on Mickey Maddow in the second.
- 36:01Here's Bud Daley.
- 36:08Hector Lopez leading off at first, Owen's bunts toward third and will it stay fair?
- 36:13It's just a double foul.
- 36:15Bob Aspermany in on the play but the way that bunt was laid down there, he better let it roll foul.
- 36:21Almost came back for a minute there.
- 36:24So that's a foul.
- 36:26Strike one to count to Bud Daley, Hector Lopez retracing his steps to first and we're all set to go again.
- 36:37Now, Kelly Fox who is now moving more over toward first base.
- 36:42He was looking for the possible spot where Daley might hit.
- 36:47Now he's looking for a little more of a bunt and there it goes again.
- 36:49Daley squared the bunt and went back to hit and took it outside.
- 36:52One ball, one strike.
- 36:55So the mental processes are going.
- 36:59Daley checking Jim Gleason at third base, four signs.
- 37:03Bob Aspermany playing in close to third.
- 37:06Lopez leading off at first, the one-one delivery.
- 37:09Daley squares, takes it right down the middle and didn't attempt to bunt the ball, thought it was inside.
- 37:14So the count goes to one ball, two strikes.
- 37:19One and two to count.
- 37:21Now Jim Gleason flashing some more signs to Daley so it might be that Yogi Bear wants Daley to bunt himself out of there.
- 37:28There he goes.
- 37:29He squares away and bunts the beauty in front of him now.
- 37:31Bateman out.
- 37:32George second for one, the throwback to first is wild and Fox made a great stop of the ball.
- 37:37Diving toward the outfield portion of first base to knock the ball down.
- 37:42So Bud Daley fails to sacrifice Lopez on to second base.
- 37:47It would be a fielded choice going from two to six.
- 37:52Castro got rid of that ball quickly and well but wild.
- 38:00Now here's Tony Kubek the batter, bounce out the first in the first inning.
- 38:05Swings and misses, strike one.
- 38:12Daley on at first base.
- 38:14Two out, no score on the ball game, last half of the third.
- 38:18Nothing in one, the count to Tony Kubek.
- 38:21All one set delivers to Kubek who fouls it off to the back boy who knocks it down.
- 38:26No balls, two strikes.
- 38:37From Fort Lauderdale, Florida on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Yankees in the cold.
- 38:45Owen who's starting to aspire heavily through his uniform gets the sign from Bateman,
- 38:50delivers to Kubek who lays off at the last minute, ball one, one ball, two strikes.
- 38:57Tony started to go after that low curve ball and then held up just at the last minute.
- 39:09Kubek had somewhat of an off season for him last year, hit only.257, had seven home runs, 44 RBI.
- 39:17One two delivery to Kubek is inside, two and two.
- 39:20Although that's not the complete story on Kubek because through the first half of the season,
- 39:25he was struggling around the 200 mark.
- 39:28Second half he had hit close to 300 to pull his average up and down.
- 39:33And that happens to players from time to time.
- 39:35Two two delivery to Kubek, high fly ball into right center.
- 39:39Jimmy Wynn going over, takes it and that takes care of the Yankees.
- 39:43Here in the last half of the third inning, for the Yankees, no runs, one hit, no cold errors, one man left.
- 39:49And the score after three full innings of play, the Yanks nothing and used to nothing.
- 39:56And now on to the next portion of this ball game brought to you by the Atlantic Refining Company
- 40:01and your neighborhood Atlantic dealer, the folks who offer you Atlantic Imperial,
- 40:06the gasoline that cleans your carburetor and keeps it clean.
- 40:13Thank you Jerry.
- 40:26Bud Daly working smooth and easy right now.
- 40:30And here's a reminder if you want a Yankee season schedule,
- 40:32the popular 12 page Valentine informational schedule and an American League game by game season schedule is available free of cost.
- 40:40Just send your request to schedule department, New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium, Bronx 51 New York.
- 40:46Please be sure to enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.
- 40:50A self-addressed stamped envelope would be even better.
- 40:58I'm starting to say that Bud Daly when he's pitching and he's on, he makes pitching look so easy that everybody wants to be a pitcher.
- 41:04Just looks like he's playing catch up there with Johnny Blanchard or whoever happens to be doing the catching for the Yankees.
- 41:13And Daly will be facing Jim Wynn who will fly it out to left field in the second inning.
- 41:2522 years old, born in Cincinnati, right hand hit a foul is the first pitch back, strike one.
- 41:35Last year with San Antonio he had 16 home runs in 78 games and in 70 games with the Colts he had four home runs.
- 41:44Not a big fella, 5'10", 160 pounds.
- 41:50First pitch is pop foul coming right back up on the roof and out of play.
- 41:56Nothing in two and there goes the blimp.
- 42:02You know we're allowed to take rides in that blimp, but I'm passing it up.
- 42:08You know there's a windy part of the country down here in Lauderdale and those blimps do a little rocking and rolling up there.
- 42:16The tackle ball hit high and foul down the left field line, the wind will carry that out of play.
- 42:21Way over the fence, Wynn uppercutted that high fast ball.
- 42:31On deck is Bob Aspermonte.
- 42:42Trash and mantle are deep in left field and center field, now it's not too deep in right.
- 42:46The wind blowing across from right field to left field.
- 42:53Two strike pitch is strike three dropped by Blanchett, picks it up, throws the first base in time for the out.
- 42:59So that goes as a strike out, but you give Blanchett an assist and the first baseman a put out, second strike out for Daly.
- 43:09That's right Joe Cooper just pointed out to me that that blimp is standing stock still just like a helicopter.
- 43:16How do they do that Joe?
- 43:18Well they just go into the wind and slow down and the wind is just like a kite.
- 43:23Now he's moving a little bit.
- 43:27Here's Aspermonte who bounced to the shortstop, takes a pitch outside ball one.
- 43:38Looks like a big hot dog with a couple of fins on it.
- 43:43Curve inside, ball two, two, nothing.
- 43:54Aspermonte bats him right handed.
- 43:57Daly pitch a line drive single up the middle.
- 44:00The first hit for the Houston Colt 45, the line single to center, no doubt about that one.
- 44:06So that breaks up the potential no hitter for Daly.
- 44:10Both teams now with one base hit, no score, we're on the top of the fourth.
- 44:14It brings up John Wheatley who reached down an error in the second inning.
- 44:23Stretch by Daly, a curve is low, ball one.
- 44:27You know that's an unusual name, not that Wheatley is an unusual name, but for an athlete.
- 44:33Something about names that sort of give you power and Wheatley is not one of them, though he is a good ball player.
- 44:41Check swing fly ball of Richardson.
- 44:43He traps it and in boosts it, picks it up close to Ritz to Kubek and they get the one.
- 44:47Bobby had a good idea there.
- 44:49He's left catching it on a fly, then tried to trap it and he would have had a double play as Wheatley had stopped running.
- 44:56Fly ball of Richardson.
- 44:57He traps it and in boosts it, picks it up close to Ritz to Kubek and they get the one.
- 45:01Bobby had a good idea there.
- 45:03He's left catching it on a fly, then tried to trap it and he would have had a double play as Wheatley had stopped running.
- 45:09And then Bobby in trying to scoop it up, had it bounce off the heel of his glove, rolled in the short center field.
- 45:14But at first base, Aspermatti had a hold up because if Richardson catches the ball on the fly, he can double him off.
- 45:20So that's a fourth play from four to six.
- 45:24Richardson's always trying something different.
- 45:27Here's Walt Bond who was hit by a pitch ball his first time at bat in the second inning.
- 45:31Hit him right on the right thumb.
- 45:33Takes a curve in there, strike one call.
- 45:40Wheatley at first.
- 45:44Gonzales playing in back of the bag.
- 45:47Stretched by Delly.
- 45:49Fastball filed back over the roof.
- 45:53Nothing in two to count.
- 46:10Bond, a big left hand batter.
- 46:16Delly sets.
- 46:19Sidearm curve way outside, one ball two strikes.
- 46:37Wheatley with a short lead at first base.
- 46:40Delly's curve is just inside.
- 46:44Two balls two strikes.
- 46:57Delly goes to the rosin bag. On deck is John Bateman the catcher.
- 47:05Now Delly stretches.
- 47:08Pitch strike three swinging.
- 47:11A sinking fastball. Delly's third strike out.
- 47:15For the Colts, no runs.
- 47:17One hit, no Yankee errors. One man left.
- 47:19At the end of three and a half it's the Colts, nothing and the Yankees, nothing.
- 47:28Those 1927 cars were great in their day.
- 47:31They had good motor oil in 1927 too.
- 47:36And as engines were improved year after year.
- 47:40Atlantic developed finer motor oils to protect them.
- 47:44Now comes the finest.
- 47:48New Atlantic Imperial Motor Oil.
- 47:53The first oil so good Atlantic has given it the imperial name and shield.
- 47:59Today's driving conditions increase the amount of dirt and sludge that build up inside your engine to interfere with performance.
- 48:06But new Atlantic Imperial Motor Oil holds dirt and sludge in suspension, helps keep it off engine parts.
- 48:13None of the new highly publicized motor oils can protect your engine better than new Atlantic Imperial Motor Oil.
- 48:23This is WOKO in Albany, New York.
- 48:26Richardson got off to a real fast start this spring.
- 48:29Was really hitting.
- 48:31He's given him a little bit of a tailspin on the western swing and has dropped down to 250 right now.
- 48:40The player's being held up momentarily as we wait for the right fielder to get out there.
- 48:45And there he goes now.
- 48:50John Weakley was either getting sunglasses or some minor repairs in the dugout.
- 48:57Now he's out there.
- 49:01And Bobby Richardson steps into the batter's box.
- 49:03On deck, Roger Maris.
- 49:11Right handed Jim Owens into the wind.
- 49:13At the pitch for Richardson, a high pop up in back of third.
- 49:15Aspermonte and Casco after it.
- 49:18Casco falls for it and makes the catch.
- 49:21Both Aspermonte and Casco yell it, I have it.
- 49:25But Teddy yelled just a little louder.
- 49:27One way here's Roger Maris.
- 49:28Maris bounced the first base in the first inning.
- 49:39Jack Mickey Manil.
- 49:41Pitch to Maris.
- 49:42A change up right in there.
- 49:43Strike one call.
- 49:45Owens curve is high, one on one.
- 49:48Owens six feet tall, 200 pounds.
- 49:52Now living in Venice, Florida, the home of early wind.
- 49:55Curve low.
- 49:57Two balls, one strike.
- 50:04And the ball is in the air.
- 50:06And the ball is in the air.
- 50:08And the ball is in the air.
- 50:10Two balls, one strike.
- 50:23Two-one delivery is high and away, ball three.
- 50:28The cold 45s are not overshipped on Maris as much as the American League clubs do.
- 50:35Three-one pitch is on the outside corner, full count to Maris, three and two.
- 50:52Jim Wyndon, center fielder, is really deep on Maris.
- 50:58Here's the payoff pitch.
- 50:59Foul back on the screen.
- 51:16Owens with that short windup.
- 51:18Delivers the ground ball to the shortstop.
- 51:21Up with it.
- 51:22Casco, the throw to first in time for the out.
- 51:24That was a nice play by Eddie Casco.
- 51:26That was a real grass burning ground ball.
- 51:28Hugs the ground.
- 51:31And here's Mantle.
- 51:32Mantle was robbed of an extra base hit and a fine play by Jim Wyndon, center fielder.
- 51:44Pitch to Mickey.
- 51:45Swing and a miss, strike one on Dex on treks.
- 52:02Q out, nobody on, no score.
- 52:03Mantle takes a curve high, one on one.
- 52:24Owens gets the sign from Bateman.
- 52:26Boy, his uniform is just about so clear through now.
- 52:31Pitch is a curve, hits the inside corner, strike two, called one ball, two strikes.
- 52:37Frank Humont calling balls and strikes.
- 52:40Humont, a New Jersey resident who has migrated to Florida, lives not too far from the ballpark here in Fort Lauderdale.
- 52:50One ball, two strike pitch.
- 52:51A line drive to right field and it's in there for a base hit.
- 52:54Wheatley plays it on one hop and fires it in to Nellie Fox.
- 52:59Mantle has hit the ball hard twice, robbed of one, gets a single on this one.
- 53:04That's the second hit for the Yankees, the Colts have only one hit.
- 53:07Tommie Tresch struck out in the second inning.
- 53:21There's a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 53:37On deck, Johnny Blanchard.
- 53:38Mantle leads away.
- 53:39The pitcher Tresch hit high in the air to left center field.
- 53:42Wins and Walthon Efford, Vaughn Caulford and makes the catch high over his head.
- 53:47That ball's really carried with the wind blowing that way.
- 53:50For the Yankees, no runs, one hit.
- 53:52No cold errors, one man left.
- 53:54And at the end of four, it's the Colts, nothing, and the Yankees, nothing.
- 54:00Well, remember the big home opener is coming up.
- 54:02Next Tuesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees will face the colorful Boston Red Sox
- 54:06and the 1964 Penance Scramble will be on.
- 54:09Now this is a special opener because it will mark the debut of longtime Yankee favorite Yogi Berra as the Yankee manager.
- 54:15The Bombers will mark the occasion too because every fan attending the opener will receive a welcome Yogi button
- 54:21to signify their attendance at his first game as manager.
- 54:24A big field pregame program will get underway at 1.30 with game time at 2 p.m.
- 54:29Guy Lombardo and his popular Royal Canadians will be on hand for entertainment before the field program
- 54:34and for the playing of our national anthem.
- 54:36Elston Howard will receive the American League Most Magical Player Award,
- 54:39and all the 1963 Yankees will receive their Penance souvenirs from league president Joe Crumb.
- 54:44It should be a big day and fans will want to be on hand to read Yogi,
- 54:48which seems all available at all Yankee pick-outlets and buy-mins.
- 54:54Right now it's 4 is 4 station identification.
- 54:57This is your Yankee baseball station in Albany, New York.
- 55:00WOKO 1460 on your dial.
- 55:15The Colt 45 will be John Bateman there canceling off.
- 55:18He popped up to Quebec at shortstop his first time at bat.
- 55:23Bateman at 6'3", 210 pounds.
- 55:31He's just 21 years old.
- 55:35Big right hand hitter.
- 55:37Fairly square ground ball, Lopez has it on one hop.
- 55:40The throw to first base backhanded by Gonzalez who put his foot off the bag and then got it back just in time.
- 55:46Gonzalez handles himself very well at first.
- 55:50Lopez has, you must remember, has played outfield now and this is the first time he's played third base in about two years.
- 55:55Although when he did play third for Kansas City and for the Yankees, his arm has always been a little erratic.
- 56:02As a matter of fact, he made one throw a while and Skowron, reaching for it, caught the ball.
- 56:07The runner coming down first ran into Moose and Moose came up with a broken wrist.
- 56:16Skowron to bounce the second base in the third inning, takes the curve outside, ball one.
- 56:29Daly's next pitch, a ground foul outside of third.
- 56:32Bumharris in the coaching box, up with it.
- 56:38Gimmie a dare coaching it first for the Colts 45. On deck, Eddie Casco.
- 56:48Daly's curve, ground ball hits it third, Lopez knocks it down, picks it up, throws to first base.
- 56:53And Gonzalez has to come off the bag to catch it and tags Owen.
- 56:57That was a nice play by Lopez, but again his arm, you've got to get used to that throw at third base and it doesn't only take one day.
- 57:04The specter took a base hit away from Owen by knocking that hard smash down and turned around, picked it up.
- 57:10And even though his throw pulled Gonzalez off the bag, Pedro was able to tag Jim Owens coming down the line.
- 57:16So it's two out here, Eddie Casco, who struck out and reached on an error.
- 57:21Casco talking with Nellie Fox, they're just talking about the weather, what they're going to do tonight,
- 57:25giving Owens a little time to get a breather and a dugout.
- 57:29Frank Umont, the play don't buy a nose, it goes over and breaks up the huddle.
- 57:34Well you can do that, you can stall a little bit, as long as you don't stall too long.
- 57:39Foxy with a big grin on his face.
- 57:44No score with two out, nobody on, and the top of the fifth.
- 57:47Daly's curve is right in there, strike one, call.
- 57:54That's right Joe Cooper, we were talking about Johnny Wheatley's name giving you the idea that he's not strong, which is not true.
- 58:00But that Nellie Fox is really a fox, I'll tell you that.
- 58:03He knows every trick in the books to get you mad, to aggravate you, to stall.
- 58:09He really can bother a catcher with his stance at that play too.
- 58:13The next pitch is low in the dirt, one on one, the count on Eddie Casco.
- 58:21Daly's curve is inside, two balls one strike.
- 58:33Pitch hit on the ground to third, Lopez is up with it, throw to first base, this one is a strike and Lopez made all three assists that inning.
- 58:41Three up, three down, nothing across, the score at the end of five full innings.
- 58:45The cold forty, whoops, check that, the score at the end of four and a half innings, the cold forty five.
- 58:55Nothing, nothing ball game.
- 58:59And we've got a change in left field but we can't get his number.
- 59:03And Walt Bond who was out there, we told you he got hit on the right thumb by a pitch ball, 28 it is Joe.
- 59:09Oh, Walt Bond is on the right field and John Wheatley has come out.
- 59:16Wally Williams is in left field.
- 59:22So Wheatley who held up the game last inning a little late getting out to left field is out of the game.
- 59:26As soon as we find out why we'll let you know.
- 59:28Johnny Bransher takes a pitch low ball one.
- 59:32Boy, you talk about a small outfielder, this Wally Williams is 5'6", but he weighs 185 pounds.
- 59:38So he's solid.
- 59:40Pitch is low to Blanchard, ball two, two and nothing.
- 59:435'6", for an outfielder, that is small.
- 59:47That's small for an infielder, small for anything.
- 59:52Except for me, he's got me by a half-pinch.
- 59:55There's a line drive to center field, that's in for a base hit.
- 59:59Wynn plays it on the second hop.
- 1:00:01Blanchard with a line single at center.
- 1:00:04Third hit for the Yankees, brings up Hector Lopez.
- 1:00:08Lopez singled off Nellie Fox's glove in the third inning.
- 1:00:18Williams in 73 games for Modesto last year batted 381.
- 1:00:26Didn't appear in any games with the Colts.
- 1:00:29The runner's going to ball, it's lined to right field and it's in for a base hit.
- 1:00:33The second trying to third is Blanchard,
- 1:00:35as well as cut off by Cascaun Blanchard slides in.
- 1:00:38A perfect hit and run executed by Hector Lopez,
- 1:00:42who is one of the best right field hitters of any right hand batter in the big league.
- 1:00:47A line shot to right field.
- 1:00:49Blanchard was not fast, but was off with the pitch.
- 1:00:53Easily made it to third.
- 1:00:55And that'll bring up Pedro Gonzalez, who's flying to center field in the third inning.
- 1:01:00So it's a scoreless ballgame, but the Yankees are threatening here.
- 1:01:02Runners at first and third, nobody out.
- 1:01:06Here's the stretch by Owen.
- 1:01:08Pitch to Gonzalez, the ground ball hits it third.
- 1:01:10As the money goes to second for one, back to first they won't get the double play.
- 1:01:13The ball was not hit hard enough and the run scores.
- 1:01:16A run battered in for Pedro Gonzalez.
- 1:01:20As Blanchard crosses the plate, the Yankees lead 1-0.
- 1:01:28Lopez was forced to second, Gonzalez safe at first.
- 1:01:32And now Bateman is going out to talk with Owen.
- 1:01:34And we're going to have a pinch hitter, Elvio Jimenez is coming up to bat for Bud Daley.
- 1:01:41And Daley had five real fine easy innings.
- 1:01:46He allowed just one hit, didn't walk anybody, struck out three, didn't allow any run.
- 1:01:55Bateman and Owens are talking things over out on the mound.
- 1:02:00Elvio, free swinger, is up at the plate, swinging the back side to loosen up.
- 1:02:09On deck is Tony Kubek.
- 1:02:20And Jimenez for the Kansas City A's.
- 1:02:25Throw to first base and Gonzalez is back.
- 1:02:32Here's the stretch.
- 1:02:34Pitch swing and a miss at a low curve, strike one.
- 1:02:45That was a minor leaguer, he has definitely been a 300 hitter.
- 1:02:49Throw to first and Gonzalez back again.
- 1:02:53One year he batted under 300, that year he hit 299.
- 1:02:57The other years he had some good ones, 329, 368, 310, 331, and 316.
- 1:03:06Here's the stretch, pitch is outside, one on one.
- 1:03:23Doesn't get many base down balls, though, as we told you he liked to swing.
- 1:03:26Another throw to first, Gonzalez back.
- 1:03:29Yankees lead 1-0 here in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:03:33Ohlins stretches, there he goes, the runner's going to swing,
- 1:03:36the miss, a throw to second base, beautiful throw and they got him.
- 1:03:40And Gonzalez had a good jump on the pitch of Jim Ohlins, but Bateman made a beautiful throw.
- 1:03:45And Gonzalez is caught stealing.
- 1:03:50Nellie Fox covered, Fox gets the put out.
- 1:03:56So it's two out, and the count is one ball and two strikes on Jimenez.
- 1:04:00Here's the windup, the ground ball hits the second base, Fox over, tries to backhand it,
- 1:04:05gets it and throws, and I tell you, he doesn't throw.
- 1:04:08He started a throw, he tried to backhand the ball, it rolled up his arm,
- 1:04:11he caught it before it hit the ground, but then never threw the ball.
- 1:04:17And Fox is charged with an error on that play.
- 1:04:26The reason they charged Fox with an error, he could have gotten in front of that ball,
- 1:04:29he wanted to backhand it and throw quickly.
- 1:04:33Tony Kubeck bounce the first fly to center, follows the first pitch off strike one,
- 1:04:36and that ball hit Bateman on the arm and the chest, boy he's having a rough day back there.
- 1:04:47Catches get those battle wounds out there.
- 1:04:52Sometimes they get hit so solidly with a foul ball you can read Joe Cronin,
- 1:04:56president of the American League, right on their body.
- 1:04:58There's a throw to first, Jimenez is back.
- 1:05:01I've seen that happen before.
- 1:05:05Stretched by on, curve high, one-on-one.
- 1:05:10So it looks like the Yankees might have picked up a little defect in Owen's delivery.
- 1:05:17They've got a couple of men running even though they caught the last one stealing.
- 1:05:20Bateman's fine throw, cut down Gonzalez.
- 1:05:23There's a stretch, throw to first, Jimenez is back.
- 1:05:32Again the stretch, pitch foul over the roof out of play.
- 1:05:40One ball, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:05:50Owen's go to the rosin bag.
- 1:05:55On deck, Bobby Richardson.
- 1:06:02There's a stretch, another throw to first, Jimenez was about a foot off the bag, he easily got back.
- 1:06:08Well maybe Paul Richards has got Owen's working on his move to first base.
- 1:06:12Many steps off the rubber.
- 1:06:16Now he's stretching.
- 1:06:19Pitch, a line drive, base hit to center field, Jimenez with the last second and stop.
- 1:06:26He went about 15 feet and then held up.
- 1:06:28So Kubeck looks to single to center.
- 1:06:31The fifth Yankee hit of the ball game.
- 1:06:36And three of them coming here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:06:40Now with runners at first and second and two out, Bobby Richardson's about it.
- 1:06:43Bobby's flying to right and popped for the shortstop.
- 1:07:00On deck, Roger Mares, runners lead off first and second.
- 1:07:04Pitch to Bobby, there's a curve in there, strike one call.
- 1:07:10There hasn't been a walk in this ball game yet for either side.
- 1:07:19Owen's set, delivers a swing and a foul-tip strike two.
- 1:07:29And into the count.
- 1:07:42Marty Ford coaching at first.
- 1:07:44Jimmy Gleason at third for the Yankees.
- 1:07:49There's a stretch, two-strike pitch, low Bobby, check the swing, there goes him.
- 1:07:53And that's the third as the ball bounced off the catcher's chest protector.
- 1:07:56But holding it first was Kubeck at the wild pitch charged to Jim Owen.
- 1:08:01Curve that hit in the dirt.
- 1:08:06I guess Kubeck was not sure that Jimenez was going to run.
- 1:08:09And Jimenez did start and stop momentarily.
- 1:08:12Might have fooled Kubeck, but Jimenez went to third on the wild pitch.
- 1:08:15Kubeck held it first.
- 1:08:17It's a one-ball, two-strike counter to Richardson.
- 1:08:21Stretch the pitch, a line drive, they set the right field.
- 1:08:25Kubeck's score, Jimenez holding it second base is Kubeck.
- 1:08:28And Richardson hit that one right off his ear.
- 1:08:31It was high in sight.
- 1:08:34Locked it to right field, run batted in for Bobby.
- 1:08:37The Yankees now lead shooting up.
- 1:08:50Cleaned up Roger Maris. Maris bounced the first, bounced the short.
- 1:08:54Kubeck had second Richardson at first.
- 1:09:01Rich to Maris low inside ball one.
- 1:09:06Kubeck and Richardson each have 15 hits to lead the Yankees in that department now.
- 1:09:19Rich to Maris, a high fly to right field.
- 1:09:22They have plenty of time to get under it.
- 1:09:24He's coming on, coming on and he takes it.
- 1:09:29For the Yankees, two runs, four hits.
- 1:09:33One Houston error and two men left on.
- 1:09:36And the score now at the end of five full innings, the Yankees two, the Colts 45 is nothing.
- 1:09:42Bill Staffett has come on to do the pitching for the Yankees as Bud Daley leaves after pitching five innings, allowing one hit and no runs.
- 1:09:50Staffett is making his fifth appearance for the spring.
- 1:09:53He's worked 11 innings, given up nine hits, three runs, all three of the man.
- 1:09:57Walked four, struck out seven. He's won two and lost one this spring.
- 1:10:00That's a fine end run average, 2.45.
- 1:10:04Staffett, as you know, has a real bad year last year.
- 1:10:12Staffett won four and lost eight, but he was quite a bit overweight.
- 1:10:15He has come down this spring in real good shape.
- 1:10:17Nellie Fox blocks the bunt, takes it over to strike.
- 1:10:21Fox lying in the second and lying in the center. He's hit the ball hard both times.
- 1:10:29On deck, Pete Reynolds.
- 1:10:36Staffett's next pitch, slow curve, hit in the air to short center field, Kudek moving back.
- 1:10:40He's there and he takes it.
- 1:10:43One away. Pete Reynolds, pop to third, flying to left field.
- 1:10:53And on deck, Jim Wintz.
- 1:11:03Danny Coombs, the right-hander, is loosening up for Houston in the bullpen as Reynolds takes a pitch high, ball one.
- 1:11:21Pitch is inside.
- 1:11:24No strikes on Pete Reynolds.
- 1:11:37Next pitch is fouled back on the screen.
- 1:11:41Well, the Houston yearbook has number 37 listed as Danny Coombs,
- 1:11:45but we just get a revision of it on a piece of typewritten paper here.
- 1:11:50Number 37 is actually Chuck Taylor, who is loosening up in the bullpen.
- 1:12:00Two-one pitch is high, ball three.
- 1:12:14Staffett into the windup.
- 1:12:16Pitch a lying drive, base hit to left field. A typical Pete Reynolds hit.
- 1:12:20He falls away and slices the ball to the opposite field.
- 1:12:23He lined it between Kudek and Lopez.
- 1:12:27So that's the second cold hit of the ball game, the first one off Staffett.
- 1:12:31And we've got a runner going in for Pete Reynolds.
- 1:12:34John Hoffman, a catcher, is running for Pete Reynolds.
- 1:12:44And it brings up Jim Wynne, flying to left field and struck out.
- 1:12:55Pitch to Wynne is a curve inside, ball one.
- 1:13:08Wynne bats him right-handed.
- 1:13:11Staffett sets his pitch, low ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:13:24Hoffman's only 20 years old. Boy, they've got some young kids on this team.
- 1:13:29Curve over strike called, two balls, one strike.
- 1:13:44Hoffman leads away. Two-one pitch hit deep to left field, but curving foul.
- 1:13:51Boy, that was a lying drive that hit against the fence in the left field corner, but foul.
- 1:13:58Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:14:03On deck, Bob Aspermante.
- 1:14:15Yankees two, colds nothing. We're on the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:14:23Stretch by Staffett. Curve inside, forces him away from the plate.
- 1:14:28Three and two to count.
- 1:14:43Staffett is ready.
- 1:14:46Curve is hit foul outside of fair.
- 1:14:50Count holds at three and two.
- 1:15:07Bill Leansover gets the sign from Blanchard.
- 1:15:10The run out first. Pitch line to left field, foul again. Boy, that wind gets them good wood on those foul balls.
- 1:15:27Staffett adds the new baseball.
- 1:15:38Yankees will be playing their first night game here at Lauderdale Stadium.
- 1:15:42Night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:15:50Here's the stretch by Staffett. Curve inside, ball for a walk.
- 1:15:55Moving the second is John Hoffman. That first is Jim Winn.
- 1:15:59And that's the first walk of the ball game, I believe, for either pitcher. Yes, it is for either team, rather.
- 1:16:05But Daly didn't walk anybody, neither did Jim Owens while he was in there.
- 1:16:09Brings up Bob Aspermonte, bounce a short single at center.
- 1:16:13Aspermonte is a Brooklyn boy and brother. Ken Aspermonte is with the Red Sox in Cleveland.
- 1:16:21Stretch the pitch. Aspermonte a high foul that's coming back on the screen out of play.
- 1:16:25Blanche is chasing it, but it hits halfway up the screen.
- 1:16:39That's one out, the Yankee infield in double play depth. Yankees lead 2-0.
- 1:16:43They've scored both their runs in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:16:52Here's the stretch. Sidearm curve is low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:17:06Hoffman leaves off second, Winn off first.
- 1:17:11Staffett delivers a curve hit deep to left field, but serving far up would have been way out of here, way, way back.
- 1:17:18It hit on top of the batting cage beyond the left field fence.
- 1:17:25Winn not only helped that, but hurt it a little bit because he's blowing from right field to left field and it pulled his foul.
- 1:17:32Now that ball was really tagged.
- 1:17:47Stretch by Staffett. Pitch in the dirt picked up by Blanche.
- 1:17:53Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:18:08Staffett ready. Pitch foul back on the roof out of play.
- 1:18:32Runners lead off first and second.
- 1:18:40Pitch is a curve foul back on the screen again.
- 1:18:46On deck is Wally Williams.
- 1:19:00Two balls, two strikes, one out. Yankees 2-0, cold 45s, nothing.
- 1:19:05We're in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:19:09Runners lead off first and second. Staffett's pitch, ground ball hit in the hole.
- 1:19:13Threw for a base hit. Coming around third.
- 1:19:16The throw to the plate. And not in time, but Stoutendorf Blanche's set going to third base on that throw.
- 1:19:23Is Jim Winn holding on first with an RBI single is Bob Atremonte. And that makes it a 2-1 ball game.
- 1:19:33In favor of the Yankees.
- 1:19:36And it brings up Wally Williams. He's got only 5'6", but a solid 185 pounds.
- 1:19:53Runners at first and third with one out.
- 1:19:57Stretch by Staffett.
- 1:20:00Pitch a fly ball to center field and dropping in for a base hit.
- 1:20:04Coming in to score is Jim Winn holding his second as Atremonte. The ball game is tied up.
- 1:20:09And little Wally Williams jumps on the first pitch.
- 1:20:17Oh, three hits off Bill Staffett here in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:20:21And the cold 45 tie up the score and here's Wally Williams.
- 1:20:25First ball is struck out.
- 1:20:41Stretch by Staffett. Change up outside, ball one.
- 1:20:59Runners off first and second. Another change up swing and a miss strike one, one on one. And what a cut bond that had at that one. He went all the way around and down on hold place.
- 1:21:23Special player attendance 2,300, 2,300 here today.
- 1:21:29Third hit high in the air to right field. Roger Marit is coming in.
- 1:21:34Coming on shading his eyes and takes it two ways.
- 1:21:40That'll bring up John Bateman, the catcher. Bateman bounced too short and bounced too third.
- 1:22:08Staffett's curve hit far outside of third, strike one.
- 1:22:28Atremonte a second, Williams at first leading away. Pitch is lined at deep left field, way back there and that ball is off the fence. One run is in the score. Here comes Williams around third.
- 1:22:40The throw to the plate is not in time and two runs score on a long double by John Bateman off the left center field fence.
- 1:22:48Boy, he's green that way.
- 1:22:51Well, Staffett getting touched up here in the sixth inning. And the cold 45s go out in front, four to two.
- 1:23:02And Jim Owens is coming out to bat so he might go another inning. Owens has bounced a second and bounced a third.
- 1:23:24Curve is low. Last year Bateman hit his weight. He weighs 210 and that's what he hit, 210, but he had 10 homers and 59 runs about it.
- 1:23:34It was his first year in the big leagues. He was one of the bonus boys signed by the cold 45s.
- 1:23:43Curve is inside.
- 1:23:47You might be wrong and that might have been his second year. Nope. That was his first year in the big leagues.
- 1:23:57Next pitch is a ball, three balls, no strikes on Jim Owens.
- 1:24:04As a matter of fact, Bateman led the cold 45s in home runs with 10 and runs batted in with 59.
- 1:24:11Next pitch is ball four to Owens. Second walk given up by Staffett.
- 1:24:19And that'll bring up Betty Casco, the ninth man to bat here in the sixth inning. Casco is struck out, reached on an error and bounced a third.
- 1:24:28Surprisingly, Bateman led the cold 45s in triples with six.
- 1:24:37I said he was a bonus boy, he got $74 to sign. Well, it was a bonus though, but I thought he was one of the big bonus boys.
- 1:24:45That's an unusual bonus, isn't it, $74 to sign a contract.
- 1:24:55Curve to Casco in there, strike four.
- 1:25:06Owens at first, Bateman at second.
- 1:25:10Pitch curve outside corner, strike two. I thought it said outside, but thank you, my friend said it nicked the corner.
- 1:25:16Nothing in two.
- 1:25:2045-4 and the Yankees two.
- 1:25:30Pitch is a fly ball to Krubeck, that shortstop right at him, he's got it.
- 1:25:36So nine men came to bat and four to cold 45s, four runs, four hits.
- 1:25:42No Yankee errors, two men left and at the end of five and a half innings, it's the cold 45s for the Yankees two.
- 1:25:55John Hoffman, who went in the run for Pete Reynolds, remains in the ballgame at first base.
- 1:26:04And Mickey Mantle, who has lined the center and single right is up and lined to base, it's a center field on the first pitch.
- 1:26:12Mickey has hit the ball hard each time.
- 1:26:16Archie Moore goes in the run for Mantle.
- 1:26:19The hero of yesterday's ballgame and Mantle gets a nice hand as he comes out.
- 1:26:32Moore is at first running for Mantle. Tom Tresh struck outside the left field up there.
- 1:26:37Take the pitch outside, ball one.
- 1:26:42Moore has impressed Yogi Berra with the short time he's been down here.
- 1:26:47And he's blowing bubbles, he's chewing bubbles up.
- 1:26:50He's not even young, sir.
- 1:26:53Take the lead off first.
- 1:26:55Tresh, round ball at first, right through Hoffman.
- 1:26:59Moving to third base is Archie Moore and holding at first is Tom Tresh.
- 1:27:06And I imagine that'll be an error tied to Hoffman.
- 1:27:09The bouncing ground ball in Hoffman's glove just didn't get down far enough.
- 1:27:19No, they've given him a hit.
- 1:27:22They've given Tresh a single.
- 1:27:27Rathaus concurs, it's a single.
- 1:27:29There's a high pop-up to the infield.
- 1:27:31And then Aspermonte shading his eyes, he's under it, and Blanchett has retired on a high pop-up fly.
- 1:27:44One away, and it brings up Michael Lopez.
- 1:27:47Lopez is two for two, single to a foster glove, single to right field.
- 1:27:55Under to first and third, the Yankees trailing four to two. As the ground ball hits the third, Aspermonte goes to second for one.
- 1:28:01Back to first base, double play.
- 1:28:05And the Colt 45s get out of an inning where they looked like they were really in trouble.
- 1:28:10For the Yankees, no runs, two hits, no cold errors, one man left at the end of sixth full inning.
- 1:28:15The Colt 45s, four in the Yankees, two.
- 1:28:23Thank you very much, Bill.
- 1:28:27Before we do get underway, Tom Metcalf is slowly walking to the mound to replace Bill Stafford,
- 1:28:37who has some most disappointing outlast couple of outings.
- 1:28:46And in center field, Archie Moore.
- 1:29:01Threshrather has gone to center and Archie Moore is playing left. Moore will bat and man on the plate.

- 1:30:05died this afternoon at 2.39. Keep tuned to this station throughout the afternoon for special information
- 1:30:13and probably a tribute to General Douglas MacArthur. Once again, General MacArthur died this afternoon at 2.39.
- 1:30:23Tom Metcalf now pitching to Nellie Fox, fly a ball to right field, and is one-handed by Merritt,
- 1:30:41who lost the ball in the sun momentarily. One away.
- 1:30:50One down.
- 1:30:57John Hoffman, who went in to run for Pete Ronalds in the sixth inning, left-hand batter.
- 1:31:08Tom Metcalf, into the windup round comes the arm, the pitch swung on as a high fly ball into center field.
- 1:31:16Trash moves over now toward left center and makes the catch.
- 1:31:21The two away.
- 1:31:28Here's Jim Winn.
- 1:31:38Winn fly to left, struck out, walked right-hand batter.
- 1:31:43Four to two in favor of Houston. The pitch is in there for a called strike.
- 1:32:01Now the pitch, high and inside. One ball, one strike.
- 1:32:14Metcalf working rapidly, delivers high and inside.
- 1:32:18One count. Four to two in favor of Houston. We're in the first half of the seventh inning.
- 1:32:31And the pitch. It's low, ball three, three and one.
- 1:32:47Three balls, one strike. Metcalf's pitch swung on.
- 1:32:51There's a drive that stays fair, but it's curving foul and goes out of our box.
- 1:32:59He really teed off on that one.
- 1:33:09He had that good sound.
- 1:33:19Tom Metcalf with a full count on Jim Winn into the windup and the pitch.
- 1:33:24Fast ball is swung on and popped up in the air foul off third.
- 1:33:28Coming on is Lopez and he makes the catch.
- 1:33:33Drive's retired in order. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:33:37The end of sixth and a half innings. It is Houston 4, New York 2.
- 1:33:45It's camel time. It's camel time. It's camel time for you. It's camel time anytime when nothing less will do.
- 1:34:11The best tobacco makes the best smoke. The exclusive camel blend of choice quality tobaccos has never been equal.
- 1:34:18For clean cut taste, honest enjoyment, easy going mildness, the best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 1:34:25Right now they get camel time, have a camel figure.
- 1:34:55Now the last half of the seventh inning, 4-2 in favor of Houston.
- 1:35:01Pedro Gonzalez fouls off the first pitch delivered by Jim Owens.
- 1:35:07His uniform shirt is just as wet as it can be. In fact, it almost looks like he has a two-tone color uniform on.
- 1:35:14The right-hander is delivery. Swung on, tapped right to the box.
- 1:35:19Owens tosses over to Hoffman. There's one away.
- 1:35:27Tom Metcalf has not come out yet. He's a scheduled batter.
- 1:35:34We are awaiting a Yankee batter, and it will be Metcalf.
- 1:35:58Jim Owens pitches, swung on. Metcalf hits a hopper to short. Eddie Casco up with it to throw the first in time.
- 1:36:05Two away.
- 1:36:16Flying overhead. They're giving free rides to everybody. Kubeck looks at a fastball over strike one.
- 1:36:36And the next pitch, swung on. There's a high fly ball in the right center. And Bond goes over to make the catch.
- 1:36:47So the Yankees go up and out in order. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:36:55At the end of the seventh inning to play, Houston four runs five hits two errors. Yankees two runs seven hits two errors.
- 1:37:05Opening day will be here. Just before you know it, wouldn't that be a week from this coming Tuesday.
- 1:37:13Wow. The Yankees will be at home April 14th for the Red Sox.
- 1:37:19It'll be a great opening day, a gala welcome yogi day, and other dates to remember.

- 1:38:01And the big holiday double header, the Yankees and Twins Saturday, Fourth of July one thirty.
- 1:38:08And old timers day, a great event. The fans select the living all time Yankees and living all time Yankee opponents.
- 1:38:16Saturday afternoon August 8th with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:38:23Now to the eighth inning. Bob Aspermonte comes up.
- 1:38:33Right hand hitter.
- 1:38:38Bob Metcalf into the wind up and the pitch is going on in foul back.
- 1:38:49He's got the short and two bases.
- 1:38:57Next pitch is flying on a ground ball is short. Two back charges it goes on over to Gonzalez.
- 1:39:03One away. One up one down.
- 1:39:13And now the man who Wally Williams who replaced John Weekley.
- 1:39:23The single in the sixth inning. Right hand batter. The pitch is inside of the letters. Ball one.
- 1:39:39The next pitch swung on. There's a high fly ball into left field. Archie Moorhondred and makes the catch. Two down.
- 1:39:56Here's Walt Bond hit by a pitch ball struck out fly to right.
- 1:40:01We first saw Walt when he came up with the Indians and in spring training he looked like he was going to be a whiz.
- 1:40:12Here's the pitch change up in there for a strike and that's what got him back out of the big leagues that changed the pace.
- 1:40:19He stands 6'6 and yet weighs only 2'15 so he's in great shape. High outside for a ball.
- 1:40:28I tell you this when he gets hold of one it's off on a good ride.
- 1:40:40The left hand batter on the next pitch swings and boy did he take a whiff. Wow.
- 1:40:57It seems that ball is still burning from the cut he took.
- 1:41:05One ball two strikes. Tom Metcalfe to wind up the pitch is high for a ball.
- 1:41:13Chuck Taylor has been warming up on the both hands.
- 1:41:18No relation to the former Stanford coach of the same name.
- 1:41:284'2 in favor of Houston at the eighth inning and the pitch swung on and fouled off.
- 1:41:49Two men out in the eighth. Coach lead 4'2. Metcalfe into the wind up and comes to the pitch and it's a curve low and inside.
- 1:41:59Full count 3'2.
- 1:42:10Three balls two strikes. Metcalfe delivers to Bond swings and misses. Strike three.
- 1:42:20No runs no hits no errors no one left on and at the end of seven and a half an inch to score.
- 1:42:26Houston 4. Chuck Taylor has come in to do the pitching now for Houston.
- 1:42:37Jim Owens turned in a good job in seven innings giving up seven hits in two runs four of the hits in the fifth inning.
- 1:42:45Got out of a big jam and the six of runners on first and third nobody asked and the Yankees did not score.
- 1:42:57Chuck Taylor from Shelbyville, Tennessee 22 years old.
- 1:43:03He's the sixth 280 pounder originally signed by the Cardinals traded by them to Houston with outfielder Jim Beacham for outfielder Carl Warwick in February.
- 1:43:20Right hander now pitching to Bobby Richardson takes it for a strike. Marathon Beck and Archie Moore to follow.
- 1:43:36The next pitch is over strike two. 4'2 in favor of Houston.
- 1:43:48That's the last half of the eighth inning and the pitch outside. He throws pretty hard.
- 1:44:08That's the one two pitch. Swung on and looped out over second and it is in there for a base hit.
- 1:44:22And up comes Roger Maas who bounded out the first, bounded the short and climbed the right.
- 1:44:42The right hander to the stretch to pitch to Rog is low and inside ball one.
- 1:44:52Yankees have out hit the coach 8 to 5 but trail 4 to 2. Quick throw first Bobby's back.
- 1:45:13And the pitch inside for a ball. I respect every individual in every town but I don't remember having run across a town quite like the one that the coach's pitcher lives in right now.
- 1:45:34That's the pitch swung on and bowed back out of play. He lives in a town called Beltbuckle. Bill's over on TV right now.
- 1:45:45Hey Bill, you know where he lives? Beltbuckle, Tennessee.
- 1:45:57Here's the pitch swung on and bowed back.
- 1:46:04Here's Bill's hander. Two balls, two strikes. And the pitch swung on. A ground ball hit out by Fox to the right center.
- 1:46:28That's the third. Win up the ball, throws on into Fox and again the Yankees have runners on first and third, nobody out.
- 1:46:42Just as they did in the sixth inning but failed to score off Yamoans. Archie Moore coming up, he ran for Mantle who singled in the sixth inning.
- 1:47:00Four to two, Houston leading. And the pitch inside, ball one.
- 1:47:12He throws pretty hard.
- 1:47:16He struck out 124 men last year at Tulsa. Walked 68. Now the pitch, accidentally swung on, hit to the third baseman to throw, has to go to first in time to get Archie Moore.
- 1:47:31Richardson scored and Mantle rather mass went second. Check swing. Four to three now. One out and Tom Fess coming up.
- 1:48:00Here's the pitch, curve inside, ball one. Chuck Taylor in the leaf of Jim Owens who gave up seven hits and two runs and seven innings.
- 1:48:23Now the pitch, swung on and popped up foul down the left field line, it's twisting out of play.
- 1:48:52Once again the stretch.
- 1:49:05And the pitch, it's up high. A 2-1 count on Tom Tresch. Roger Maris on second, last of the eighth. Colts four, the Yankees three.
- 1:49:26Taylor delivers, Tresch takes it inside. 3-1, German breaking pitch.
- 1:49:35Three balls, one strike.
- 1:49:50And the delivery. It almost hits Tresch, he had to jump away from the plate. Ball four.
- 1:49:58And up comes Johnny Blanchard who's rounded second, single to center.
- 1:50:03And then in the sixth inning with runners on first and third, nobody out, pops up.
- 1:50:16And we're getting some action with both ends. Jim Ray, right-hander.
- 1:50:25One down, two on. And the pitch, way up high, ball one.
- 1:50:45Maris on second, Tresch on first. One out and eight innings.
- 1:50:51And the delivery. It's over for a strike, good fastball.
- 1:50:57A 1-1 count. One out, two on, one in.
- 1:51:04Maris on second, Tresch on first, 4-3 Houston, eighth inning.
- 1:51:11Here's the pitch and it's inside to Blanchard. A 2-1 count.
- 1:51:30Two balls, one strike.
- 1:51:35And the pitch, swung on and popped foul to the right of the plate and it's out of play.
- 1:52:03A 2-2 count. Blanchard digs in, Taylor to the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:08Swung on, bounce, and hit down.
- 1:52:11Nice video. Maris down, third comes in to score. On to third goes Tresch.
- 1:52:18And it's an error for Hoffman that permits the tying run to come in.
- 1:52:28A target ball, pop through it. Hoffman took over for Reynolds at first.
- 1:52:34He actually is a catcher.
- 1:52:38And may be excused from those bounds.
- 1:52:43And Hector Lopez comes up.
- 1:52:47He's had two singles and ran it into a double play.
- 1:52:53Number four, one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:01And the pitch, swung on and fouled off.
- 1:53:04Ball hits the top of the mask of the catcher, Johnny Bacon.
- 1:53:14And then spun off and hits the chest protector, the umpire.
- 1:53:30Runners on first and third. And the pitch, swung on and lined out in the center field for a base hit.
- 1:53:37Blanchard stops at second as Tresch comes in to score the lead run.
- 1:53:43Hector Lopez produces his third hit of the game.
- 1:53:53Three runs in this inning, and the Yankees are out in front, five to four.
- 1:54:09Blanchard on second, Lopez on first, and Pedro Gonzalez up.
- 1:54:15Fly into center, ground into third, and hits to the box.
- 1:54:26Chuck Taylor's pitch, little high, ball one.
- 1:54:37Good ball, no strikes.
- 1:54:44And the next pitch is low and inside, ball two.
- 1:54:56Our game tomorrow will be heard just on FM.
- 1:54:59No, wait a minute, that's right, AM and FM, because it's a night game.
- 1:55:04The Los Angeles Dodgers will be playing the Yankees here.
- 1:55:08So be sure and tune in, 7.55, right where you are right now.
- 1:55:15Here's the pitch, swung on and popped foul, and the ball's over near the Yankee dugout.
- 1:55:21Out of play.
- 1:55:32Regardless of the outcome of this game, I think the real story today is the second successive failure of Bill Stanford.
- 1:55:52Here's the pitch, swung on and fouled back.
- 1:55:58I expected that Bill might wrap somebody out of the starting four rotation this year after his slump last season.
- 1:56:06He got down a good weight.
- 1:56:08He looked good in the earlier games.
- 1:56:10Last couple of outings he's been tagged.
- 1:56:18Chuck Taylor another stretch.
- 1:56:20And the pitch, swung on and fouled off.
- 1:56:25That's what spring training, of course, is for, to find out where certain strengths and weaknesses lie.
- 1:56:38Some you can anticipate ahead of time, some you cannot.
- 1:56:43Two balls, two strikes, one out.
- 1:56:45And the pitch, swung on and right in the center field for a base hit.
- 1:56:49Blanchard rounds third, he comes on in to score, and the cutoff play, and they've got Lopez trapped as the first baseman,
- 1:57:01Hoffman, cuts the ball off.
- 1:57:06Hector dived back into second.
- 1:57:08Lopez, who hits the ball, got down to second base.
- 1:57:14But the runner, before he was tagged out by Aspermonte, who picked the throw from the first baseman from the cutoff position,
- 1:57:24the base runner is entitled to return to the base he last held in order to avoid being put out.
- 1:57:33And therefore, Lopez was safe and they tagged Gonzalez, and Gonzalez who got the hit and drove in the run is out.
- 1:57:48Here's Tom Metcalf.
- 1:57:50So the play went from Wynn, the center fielder, to Hoffman, the first baseman, to Aspermonte, the third baseman.
- 1:57:59You're tuned to 1460 Radio WOKO in Albany, New York.
- 1:58:03...was two down, takes the strike.
- 1:58:13You're not allowed to run the bases in reverse order to make a travesty of the game,
- 1:58:20but in order to regain possession to avoid being put out, you're allowed to.
- 1:58:24Here's the pitch, and it's in there for a strike.
- 1:58:27That's when two men wind up on the base as they did there.
- 1:58:33The man entitled to it is the man who had it.
- 1:58:36He got back there before he was tagged out.
- 1:58:44Now the pitch outside.
- 1:58:47And Gonzalez has been just a little bit more alert in the situation.
- 1:58:51He wasn't certain whether Lopez was tagged out before he touched the base or not, which is probably the reason.
- 1:58:59He could have taken off and gone back toward first and gotten the chase there.
- 1:59:04Seemed that happened and the ball's gone away.
- 1:59:06Here's the pitch, swung on, bounced out to short.
- 1:59:09Hasco up with it over to Hoffman.
- 1:59:11End time and the size retires.
- 1:59:15So the Yankees came up with four runs.
- 1:59:20Four hits.
- 1:59:23One error for the Colts.
- 1:59:28And one Yankee left on.
- 1:59:31At the end of eight innings, the Yankees six, the Colts four.
- 1:59:39At the end of eight innings, the Yankees six, the Colts four.
- 1:59:47Wow, you get a smile every time with a smile in time.
- 1:59:57Wow, what a fear that's down in time.
- 2:00:00You get a smile every time with a smile in time.
- 2:00:04Wow, what a fear that's down in time.
- 2:00:08Fear at the fear.
- 2:00:11So it's refreshing around, won't fill you up, won't set you down.
- 2:00:17You get a smile every time with a smile in time.
- 2:00:23Get a smile every time.
- 2:00:25Make your Valentine's Day.
- 2:00:29When the game gets together, you get the Valentine.
- 2:00:32Always be sure to have plenty of Valentine's Day on hand.
- 2:00:36So get a smile every time.
- 2:00:38Make your Valentine's Day.
- 2:00:41Wow, what a fear.
- 2:00:53We pause for station identification.
- 2:01:00This is WOKO in Albany, New York.
- 2:01:08In the first half of the ninth inning, Johnny Bateman leads off for the Colts.
- 2:01:13One out of three, pops the short down to the third,
- 2:01:16and then slammed a terrific two-run double to left in the sixth inning.
- 2:01:22Off-billed Stafford, who worked only the one inning, gave up four of the Colts' five hits in all their runs.
- 2:01:32Tom Metcalf, who came on in the seventh inning, into the windup and the pitch, swung on and missed, strike one.
- 2:01:41There will be a pinch hitter for Taylor.
- 2:01:47Ernie Fazio.
- 2:01:55Tom Metcalf into the windup, in comes the pitch, and it's right over, strike two.
- 2:02:16Now the pitch.
- 2:02:18There's a smash to short in the hole.
- 2:02:21Kubeck throws high.
- 2:02:24Fazio continues a rather Bateman on the second.
- 2:02:28Tony had to go way over into the hole to grab that ball and then over through Gonzalez.
- 2:02:35So we'll see whether they call it a base hit in an error or an error all the way.
- 2:02:43Probably an error all the way.
- 2:02:52Now Fazio comes up to hit to Taylor.
- 2:02:59And Ernie Caps go on back.
- 2:03:02Metcalf's pitch, swung on and bowled back.
- 2:03:14Fazio was with the Colts last year, little fellow wide.
- 2:03:37Jim Ray in the bullpen for the twins and that's for the Colts, excuse me.
- 2:03:43Here's the pitch, high and inside.
- 2:03:46Ball one, one and one.
- 2:03:58Metcalf's next pitch, swung on, there's a looping fly ball in the short center coming on fast as fast to make the catch.
- 2:04:08Looked for a moment as if it might drop for Texas League single, but Tom got a good jump on it.
- 2:04:15Eddie Casco struck out safe on an error by Yankee third baseman, Hector Lopez, playing third base for the first time in two years today.
- 2:04:31Grounded the third and popped the short.
- 2:04:36Casco is a determined ball player.
- 2:04:40The pitch is high and inside, ball one.
- 2:04:46He's a New Jersey boy, makes his home now in Richmond.
- 2:04:51Played against the Yankees in the last Yankee Cincinnati World Series.
- 2:04:57The pitch, swung on, there's a high fly ball in the left center.
- 2:05:01Archie Moore goes over and makes the catch.
- 2:05:05And two away.
- 2:05:09And up comes Nelson Jacob Fox.
- 2:05:20It's over for a strike, a one and one count.
- 2:05:35Johnny Hoffman on deck.
- 2:05:39Metcalf's delivery, swung on, there's a ground ball hit to short, long throw necessary, and it is in time.
- 2:05:47Back to Gonzalez.
- 2:05:50And that ends the ballgame. No runs, no hits, one and one left on.
- 2:05:55I'll be back in a minute with the totals and highlights.
- 2:05:59It's camel time. It's camel time, camel time. It's leisure time for you. Camel time is any time when nothing less will do. Things all seem to brighten up. Every time you light one up. Right now make it camel time, have a camel cigarette.
- 2:06:25The best tobacco makes the best smoke. The exclusive camel blend of choice quality tobacco has never been equal. For clean cut taste, honest enjoyment, easy going mildness. The best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 2:06:39Right now make it camel time, have a camel cigarette. Right now make it camel time, have a camel cigarette.
- 2:07:02It was a game that, outside of the score, which is relatively unimportant in spring training, but what was important from the standpoint of the Yankees was the fact that Yogi Berra now has a problem with a season open within a week.
- 2:07:30One of the men he was counting on most was Bill Stafford, who was brilliant until last year and he had an off season.
- 2:07:42But in his last two outings, Stafford has not been the old Stafford, although even going into today's game, he had pitched 11 innings, given up nine hits and three runs.
- 2:07:56Saw the Mern, walked four, struck out seven, and had an earned run average of 2.45, but he didn't look too good in his last outing.
- 2:08:07And today, well he just worked one inning and that Yogi had seen all he wanted to see for the day, because he gave up four runs and four hits in the sixth inning after the Yankees had finally solved the excellent but sometimes troublesome to a ball club, Jim Owens, for two runs.
- 2:08:34But on the other side of the picture was Bud Daley, who in four previous attempts to prove to the skipper that his arm has come around and that he can be of service to the Yankees, had pitched 13 innings, allowed 11 hits, four runs, all of them earned.
- 2:08:55Walked eight, struck out three for 2.08 average, which wasn't too bad. And today Bud Daley gave up one hit in five innings, no runs. His control was good.
- 2:09:11And then in the sixth inning, Stafford came on, and that's when the Colts got going with one out, a single to walk, two more singles, and then with two outs Bateman was the fellow that supplied the big blow, a double to left center.
- 2:09:28And there were four runs home.
- 2:09:31So that overcame the Yankees two run lead, built up in the fifth inning off Jim Owens, who pitched pretty good ball himself, who gave up seven hits and two runs in seven innings.
- 2:09:44Blanchard and Lopez had singles. There was a force out at second and Blanchard had come on home.
- 2:09:53Then there was an error that added to the scoring. Kubek and Richardson added singles in the inning.
- 2:10:01And in the eighth inning, singles by Richardson and Maris, and then field out a walk to Trash, and an error by Hoffman, a catcher playing first base today.
- 2:10:11And one of three base hits by Lopez and the single by Gonzalez, who played first base, there were a lot of men out of position.
- 2:10:19In the total, the Yankees six runs, 11 hits, three errors, four runs, five hits and three errors for the Houston Colts.
- 2:10:28The winning pitcher is Tom Metcalf, and the losing pitcher is Chuck Taylor.
- 2:10:39Well, that winds up another Atlantic baseball broadcast. Like all Yankee broadcasts, this one came to you by courtesy of P. Valentine & Sons, the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and the Atlantic Refining Company.
