- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the third Hour Show fifty two hundred. We
- 0:17Speaker 1: did it yeses crazy Huh Show two hundred, The Morning
- 0:23Speaker 1: Show with Preston Scott Jose. Can you see over there
- 0:26Speaker 1: in Studio one A proving that yes, you can make
- 0:31Speaker 1: it up. It is Monday, July twenty second, and it's time,
- 0:35Speaker 1: my friends to talk a little FSU football and we
- 0:40Speaker 1: are joined by Ira Chaffell, the managing editor of war
- 0:44Speaker 1: Chant dot Com. Ira, I gotta tell you, my friend,
- 0:47Speaker 1: with the stuff I've had to talk about the last
- 0:49Speaker 1: few weeks, this is just warm and fuzzy time for me. Pal.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's college football finally here, man, we got acc
- 0:58Speaker 2: kickoff starts today Charlotte and then in just I guess
- 1:02Speaker 2: two days for to state the open practice, and then
- 1:04Speaker 2: one month after that will be in Dublin for a
- 1:07Speaker 2: kickoff of the season.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Now you are in Charlotte, give everybody just a little
- 1:16Speaker 1: snapshot what happens over these few days.
- 1:19Speaker 2: A lot of talking, just the talking season has officially begun.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Mike Norvella is here with three players, Darius Washington, the
- 1:27Speaker 2: O offensitive lineman, defensive lineman, Josh Farmer and Patrick Payton.
- 1:31Speaker 2: They're going to start their interviews this morning at ten thirty.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It's actually something nice that FSH she does. They'll make
- 1:37Speaker 2: their contingent available to basically just the FSU media who
- 1:41Speaker 2: made the trip up here first at around ten thirty,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and we'll have videos and updates from that. Then they'll
- 1:48Speaker 2: just be basically going through a battery of interviews with
- 1:52Speaker 2: everyone from radio stations. They'll have radio row like you
- 1:55Speaker 2: see it like the super Bowl obviously should be familiar with,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and then you know, just basically breakout rooms with different reporters.
- 2:05Speaker 2: ESPN will get a plenty of time with them, and
- 2:06Speaker 2: the ACC Network will get plenty of time with them,
- 2:09Speaker 2: and basically they'll go through that un till about five
- 2:11Speaker 2: o'clock today. Then those three schools, the three schools going
- 2:14Speaker 2: today are FSU, Georgia Tech, and SMU. Then there'll be
- 2:18Speaker 2: three more schools tomorrow, three more schools the next day,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and then the final day is Thursday with the final
- 2:22Speaker 2: three schools. I believe Clemson's going on the final day,
- 2:25Speaker 2: Miami's going tomorrow or Wednesday, I'm not sure which. But
- 2:28Speaker 2: they broke it up over four days this year, which
- 2:31Speaker 2: is different. It used to be two or three days
- 2:33Speaker 2: and now with the conference being you know, I don't know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: thirty five forty teams whatever it is. Now they're gonna
- 2:39Speaker 2: split it out over three days, right.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I think I know the answer to this, But I
- 2:43Speaker 1: have to ask, do you sense any grudge among the
- 2:47Speaker 1: FSU party shall we call it and ESPN?
- 2:52Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I made a comment to Mike
- 2:55Speaker 2: Norvela probably a month or so ago he did an
- 2:57Speaker 2: interview with Greg mcloy and some FSU fans on our
- 3:01Speaker 2: message boards were mad that he wasn't he didn't show
- 3:04Speaker 2: any animosity towards McIlroy and uh in Norville was like,
- 3:07Speaker 2: he kind of shrugged his shoulders. He's like, I don't
- 3:09Speaker 2: remember who said what. You know, Look, in his job,
- 3:13Speaker 2: he obviously can't do anything. Uh, it's not going to
- 3:16Speaker 2: help him if he if he comes across as bitter
- 3:19Speaker 2: or angry, it's not really going to help him. The players,
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't know that they saw, you know, just from
- 3:25Speaker 2: what I can gather, I don't know that they saw
- 3:27Speaker 2: it as much as an ESPN thing as much as
- 3:29Speaker 2: they did just a sport of college football, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: the sport as a as a whole. They felt like
- 3:34Speaker 2: wrong them. I, you know, you and I may believe
- 3:36Speaker 2: I certainly do the ESPNS at the heart of that,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but I don't know that the players see it that way.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Suddenly going to be civil, especially you know for Mike Norvell,
- 3:44Speaker 2: He's going to be a professional no matter what.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I expected that is the journalists deep down inside
- 3:50Speaker 1: of you, Ira, because at your core, that's what you are.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You're a You're a journalist. Is there a part of
- 3:55Speaker 1: you that, like me, still feels like there are unanswered
- 3:59Speaker 1: questions that need answers. For example, I'm still bothered that
- 4:03Speaker 1: we've not had a discussion over the fact that ESPN
- 4:06Speaker 1: owned a sports book and was promoting a sports book
- 4:10Speaker 1: while all of that was going on.
- 4:13Speaker 2: No, I certainly do, And you know, after in the
- 4:16Speaker 2: months afterwards, you know, I really explored a few different
- 4:19Speaker 2: avenues to see if the committee members would talk about
- 4:23Speaker 2: just the process, because that's the biggest thing. You know, look,
- 4:26Speaker 2: let's just talk about the process. How did you guys
- 4:28Speaker 2: make the decision at what kind of input did you
- 4:30Speaker 2: get from ESPN and what kind of guidance did you
- 4:34Speaker 2: get from different people? Because the committee members are just
- 4:38Speaker 2: like former coaches and athletic crickers and for the most part,
- 4:41Speaker 2: people who've been in the game, and you know, can
- 4:44Speaker 2: we just have conversations individually about how it all went
- 4:47Speaker 2: down and and none of them have been willing to
- 4:50Speaker 2: talk individually about the process. So I'm with you. I'd
- 4:54Speaker 2: love to see that. I just don't know that we
- 4:56Speaker 2: ever to get those answers.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Whether you were listening on an old radio and you're
- 5:00Speaker 1: car wort Truck or streaming on one of those other thingies.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. It's the Morning Show with Preston Scott.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Back with Irish Chaffell of warchand dot com. He's a
- 5:16Speaker 1: managing editor. That's where you subscribe and get all the intel.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'm a subscriber and no, I'm not getting it bonus
- 5:23Speaker 1: to me. It's not a freebie. I'm happy to be
- 5:26Speaker 1: a paid subscriber to war Chant because I love the writing,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I love the work they do following FSU athletics, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: so you can go there as well and subscribe. Get
- 5:34Speaker 1: ready for the college football season, Ira, what's the most
- 5:36Speaker 1: important thing that happened between the end of the season
- 5:40Speaker 1: and the start of the new season for this year's team?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Was it the arrival of Djongola or was it something else?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's one hundred percent DJ Leeway.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Thank you, you said it right, Yeah, hey man.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It's I probably shoot about sixty percent on that. We'll
- 6:00Speaker 2: see it will take it up. I hit one, but yeah,
- 6:03Speaker 2: you know, yeah, I think that to me, that changes
- 6:05Speaker 2: the complexion of everything. I think if you if Florida
- 6:08Speaker 2: State had decided and a lot of people thought they
- 6:10Speaker 2: may do this, that you know, after going thirteen to
- 6:12Speaker 2: one and losing as many players they did, ten players
- 6:15Speaker 2: to the NFL Draft, several other players signed this free
- 6:18Speaker 2: agent that maybe this will be a little bit of
- 6:21Speaker 2: a step back year and kind of reload for next season.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But once they decided to go out and get dj
- 6:27Speaker 2: to me, that was a pretty strong sign that Mike
- 6:28Speaker 2: Norvel's not in the of the mindset that this is
- 6:32Speaker 2: going to be a reloading year that he thinks this
- 6:34Speaker 2: is a year because you only get him for one year,
- 6:36Speaker 2: and this is a year where if you wanted to
- 6:38Speaker 2: build for the future, you could get Brock Glenn and
- 6:40Speaker 2: maybe even the other freshman quarterback, Louke Cromenhawk some experience
- 6:44Speaker 2: this season to kind of build them for next season.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Going out and getting DJ and then you saw them
- 6:49Speaker 2: really go out hard in the transfer portal again getting
- 6:52Speaker 2: Malik Benson, the wide receiver from Alabama. Actually they got
- 6:54Speaker 2: five players from Alabama. They got Martin Jones junior from Georgia.
- 6:59Speaker 2: They were went out and got a lot of marquee players,
- 7:02Speaker 2: probably the highest profile transfers that they've gotten since they've
- 7:05Speaker 2: been a Florida state. And I think it's a sign
- 7:08Speaker 2: that Mike Gorvelt wants to have another big season.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Hira. If you go back to the success of Bobby Bowden,
- 7:13Speaker 1: whether it was with Brad Scott as his OC or
- 7:16Speaker 1: Mark Rick as his offensive coordinator, I look at the
- 7:20Speaker 1: way that they ran that quarterback room and how they
- 7:24Speaker 1: got those backups really good playing time in their freshman
- 7:28Speaker 1: sophomore years, and they did that real smart turnover. Are
- 7:33Speaker 1: you thinking that that's kind of what Norvel is embracing
- 7:36Speaker 1: the possibility of let's get some games put away and
- 7:39Speaker 1: get these other guys out on the field, or let's
- 7:42Speaker 1: get them out on the field either way and get
- 7:44Speaker 1: them some meaningful snaps whether the game's in balance or not.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I think this is I personally think this is going
- 7:51Speaker 2: to be a year where they do try to get
- 7:53Speaker 2: certainly them quarterbacks, but a lot of other positions as well,
- 7:56Speaker 2: get some guys opportunities because it does two things. Number
- 8:01Speaker 2: one is it helps you build to the future. But
- 8:03Speaker 2: also number two, it gives you an idea of what
- 8:05Speaker 2: you have for the next year and what you need
- 8:07Speaker 2: to go get in the next year. You know, Like defensively,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I think Florida say rotates extremely well. You know, even
- 8:13Speaker 2: last year when you had Jared Versus and Patrick Payton
- 8:16Speaker 2: the defensive end, right, they rotated in a lot of
- 8:18Speaker 2: younger defensive ends. I think you may see more of
- 8:20Speaker 2: that offense. Especially I've got some young receivers Hai Keid Williams,
- 8:25Speaker 2: some of these younger guys, the freshmen that they signed,
- 8:28Speaker 2: the receiver Elijah Moore and these other guys. I think
- 8:31Speaker 2: they're gonna want to see what those guys can do
- 8:33Speaker 2: to give them an idea of what they need to
- 8:34Speaker 2: do in the transfer portal next season, or if they
- 8:36Speaker 2: can rely on more of those homegrown guys.
- 8:38Speaker 1: On the defensive side. Was Patrick Payton flirting with departing
- 8:42Speaker 1: FSU a result of nil and was that why he
- 8:45Speaker 1: was retained or is it something else?
- 8:48Speaker 2: I think it was a combination. I think part of
- 8:50Speaker 2: it was a little bit in il. I think it
- 8:51Speaker 2: was a lot of those frustration that when that all
- 8:53Speaker 2: happened in December, you know, and the emotions were so
- 8:57Speaker 2: raw for this football team because you know, they had
- 9:00Speaker 2: and everything they were told they were supposed to do.
- 9:02Speaker 2: They went undefeated, they won the ACC championship, and then
- 9:04Speaker 2: they got left out of the playoff, and I think
- 9:06Speaker 2: there was a period of time there where things were
- 9:09Speaker 2: uneasy in the throughout the program where guys, a lot
- 9:13Speaker 2: of guys were kind of wondering, you know, can we
- 9:15Speaker 2: win the national championship at ACS in Florida City? Are
- 9:18Speaker 2: they going to hold the ACC against us? Are they
- 9:20Speaker 2: going to hold this conference against us? With deciding who
- 9:23Speaker 2: to take and so I think it was a lot
- 9:25Speaker 2: of things, but it ultimately for Florida State, I think
- 9:27Speaker 2: they did a really good job of getting to him
- 9:29Speaker 2: and just explaining to him, listen, man, everything's fine. I
- 9:32Speaker 2: don't think it was a situation where he was holding
- 9:34Speaker 2: them hostage. I just think there was a lot of frustration.
- 9:37Speaker 2: But Nil certainly was part of it, and it always
- 9:40Speaker 2: will be in this state of college football.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Irishchaffelle with us for one more segment when we come back.
- 9:45Speaker 1: The latest on the FSU versus ACC legal battle here
- 9:51Speaker 1: on the Morning Show with Preston Scott back with Irishafel
- 9:56Speaker 1: of war Chant dot Com. I saved this there could
- 10:00Speaker 1: be a standalone topic ira the ACC versus Florida State
- 10:05Speaker 1: University quickly an overview for people that are not aware
- 10:09Speaker 1: of the complexity of this. What is this all about?
- 10:15Speaker 2: You know, at the end of the day, it's just
- 10:16Speaker 2: about Florida State trying to get out of the ACC
- 10:18Speaker 2: because they're stuck in this conference contractually till twenty thirty six,
- 10:23Speaker 2: and the payoffs are going to stay relatively flat throughout
- 10:27Speaker 2: that time. Like what Florida State makes this year from
- 10:30Speaker 2: the AEC, probably around forty million dollars, will be essentibly
- 10:34Speaker 2: the same as it's going to be for the next
- 10:36Speaker 2: ten to twelve years. And meanwhile, the Big ten in
- 10:38Speaker 2: the SBC have expanded, They've added big schools, the SEC
- 10:42Speaker 2: obviously out of Texas and Oklahoma. Big ten went out,
- 10:44Speaker 2: got USC and UCLA, and now their new contracts are
- 10:48Speaker 2: going to call for those conferences, the schools and those
- 10:50Speaker 2: conferences to make maybe eighty to ninety million dollars a
- 10:54Speaker 2: year from their television deals, and so Florida State is
- 10:56Speaker 2: sitting there saying, well, we have to make somewhere near
- 10:59Speaker 2: that money. Stead of forty million a year, we need
- 11:01Speaker 2: to be eighty or ninety million a year to compete
- 11:03Speaker 2: with the Florida Gators, to compete with these other schools
- 11:06Speaker 2: in the SEC and Big Ten. So what they're suing
- 11:08Speaker 2: for is to try to get the ability to get
- 11:12Speaker 2: their TV rights back so that they can join one
- 11:14Speaker 2: of those conferences. And then what it's going to come
- 11:16Speaker 2: down to, it's in the legal system.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Now.
- 11:18Speaker 2: FSU is suing the ACC, Clemson is suing the ACC,
- 11:21Speaker 2: and the ACC is suing both of them back in
- 11:24Speaker 2: three different states. These lawsuits are going on basically to
- 11:27Speaker 2: determine how much are these schools going to have to
- 11:30Speaker 2: pay to get out of these contracts so they can
- 11:32Speaker 2: get into maybe one of those other two conferences and
- 11:35Speaker 2: make the kind of money that those other schools are making.
- 11:38Speaker 1: What would you say to those that say, yeah, but
- 11:41Speaker 1: the ACC enhanced its conference with Stanford and cal.
- 11:49Speaker 2: And that'snu also right.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I forgot about poor SMU. That tells you all you
- 11:53Speaker 1: need to know. I forgot about them.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Yeah, basically those are three schools. And this is part
- 11:58Speaker 2: of fshu's lawsuits is you know, when those conferences went
- 12:02Speaker 2: out and got four or five of the biggest brands
- 12:04Speaker 2: in college football in the Big Ten also added you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: Washington and Oregon, you know, the ACC got the leftovers.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You know, SMU wasn't taken by the Big twelve or
- 12:15Speaker 2: or the Big Ten. Talents in Stanford were not taken
- 12:18Speaker 2: by the Big Ten when the Pac twelve got raided,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and so basically the ACC just added some leftovers to
- 12:24Speaker 2: kind of improve their inventory. But at the end of
- 12:27Speaker 2: the day, it's not going to do anything to help
- 12:28Speaker 2: the bottom line. And so yeah, it's it's a rough situation.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And this is a lot of people, you know, get
- 12:34Speaker 2: mad at ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, who were going to
- 12:36Speaker 2: hear from later today. That should be interesting. But at
- 12:39Speaker 2: the end of the day, he's stuck with these schools.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I mean, this is the conference you're in. When Florida
- 12:44Speaker 2: State joined the ACC thirty years ago, thirty plus years ago,
- 12:47Speaker 2: the world was different. College basketball actually brought in more
- 12:50Speaker 2: money from the NCAA tournament. The college football brought in
- 12:52Speaker 2: from TV it's completely the opposite now and the ACC
- 12:56Speaker 2: is just kind of it's just a conference that a
- 12:58Speaker 2: lot of people think as dead man walked well.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And now by adding sm you, cal and Stanford, you've
- 13:04Speaker 1: added remarkable costs for all of the schools that will
- 13:07Speaker 1: play each other.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Among that group, it's a huge headache. You know, you
- 13:12Speaker 2: talk about you know, obviously football is what's the heart
- 13:15Speaker 2: of all this, but yeah, you talk about sending baseball teams,
- 13:18Speaker 2: basketball teams, tennis teams, golf teams, you know, across the
- 13:22Speaker 2: country to play tournaments and not just that. I mean,
- 13:25Speaker 2: at the end of the day, and we can roll
- 13:27Speaker 2: our eyes at this in this age of college athletics,
- 13:30Speaker 2: but they are still student athletes. But we're still required
- 13:32Speaker 2: to go to school. And now you start adding that
- 13:35Speaker 2: travel on top of their school work and in top
- 13:38Speaker 2: of what they do for practicing and competition. It's it's
- 13:42Speaker 2: it's a mess. And this isn't unique to Florida State.
- 13:44Speaker 2: It's it's these other conferences too. You know, the Big
- 13:47Speaker 2: Ten's got schools from Rutgers in New Jersey, across the
- 13:50Speaker 2: California and up to Washington. So's it's just it's we're
- 13:54Speaker 2: in a state of transition right now. I hope at
- 13:56Speaker 2: some point the money makers make it work to where
- 13:59Speaker 2: we can get back to some regionality. But these next
- 14:02Speaker 2: few years I think are gonna be kind of crazy.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and the Big Ten and to whatever extent the SEC,
- 14:09Speaker 1: they've got more money to play with to get those
- 14:11Speaker 1: teams back and forth. Iralosing clearly your sources would tell
- 14:18Speaker 1: you that there is a an end result here. F
- 14:22Speaker 1: SU win separation, they get their buyout, maybe they make
- 14:27Speaker 1: payments over a few years, and then they join the.
- 14:33Speaker 2: At this point, I probably say at this point, I
- 14:35Speaker 2: probably say still say the Big Ten. But I've gone
- 14:38Speaker 2: back and forth a ton of times. I still, as
- 14:40Speaker 2: a guy who grew up in Florida, I still hope
- 14:43Speaker 2: it's the SEC. I just think it's a better fit
- 14:45Speaker 2: geographically and culturally. But you know, the Big Ten may
- 14:50Speaker 2: have a bigger appetite to expand than the SEC does.
- 14:53Speaker 2: What I'm hoping is that once the SEC realizes the
- 14:55Speaker 2: Big Ten is serious about Florida State, that maybe they
- 14:58Speaker 2: jump in and protect to the southeast. But right now, man,
- 15:03Speaker 2: I go back and forth, like the winds, the winds
- 15:05Speaker 2: across the just the planes.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Ira, You're a good man for making the time. I
- 15:11Speaker 1: appreciate it. Looking forward to the start of the season
- 15:14Speaker 1: and our visits. Thanks so much and best to you.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Thank you to Preston, take care.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Iras Chapel with us from the ACC meetings in Charlotte.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Look at us. That's how we roll around here. And
- 15:27Speaker 1: a week from today, Mike Alford Michael Alford, the athletic Director,
- 15:32Speaker 1: vice president of Athletics for Florida State University.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He's the AD.
- 15:36Speaker 1: He will join us for a state of the knowles
- 15:38Speaker 1: and we'll have him for almost a full hour. And
- 15:41Speaker 1: that is next Monday here on the Morning Show with
- 15:43Speaker 1: Preston Scott
