Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, the
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. In today's episode, we take a
- 0:17look and X, formerly known as Twitter.
- 0:20Now it's embarking on a major strategic pivot to attract small
- 0:24to medium sized businesses for advertising in the wake of
- 0:27losing significant revenue from the exit of major brands like
- 0:30Apple, IBM and Disney. And this move comes as a direct
- 0:34response to these brands withdrawing their advertisements
- 0:37following owner Elon Musk's endorsement of a supposed
- 0:41anti-Semitic post. Now the shift signifies an
- 0:44important recalibration of X's business model, focusing on
- 0:47creating a conducive environment for smaller businesses as
- 0:51opposed to mega corporations. Now, Elon Musk has openly
- 0:56criticized the platform's previous advertising strategy,
- 0:59particularly its approach to small businesses.
- 1:02This criticism led to a radical overhaul of the advertising
- 1:04policies, aiming to make the platform more accessible and
- 1:08appealing to smaller companies. Now, X's new direction involves
- 1:11revising advertising policies and streamlining the ad creation
- 1:14process to suit the needs and budgets of these smaller
- 1:18entities. And the loss of major
- 1:20advertisers has been a significant blow to X's revenue
- 1:23stream. As of now, high profile
- 1:26companies like Disney, Warner Brothers, and Universal have
- 1:29ceased posting on the platform altogether, a decision that
- 1:32affects not only advertising income but also user engagement.
- 1:36And these brands which command large followings were
- 1:40instrumental in making acts an influential platform in their
- 1:43absence leaves a noticeable void.
- 1:46In response to the exodus, X has ramped up its investment in
- 1:50promoting ads from smaller companies.
- 1:52This includes offering more targeted and budget friendly
- 1:55advertising options and leveraging sophisticated
- 1:58self-service ad buying tools. These tools are designed to
- 2:01enable even those with little marketing experience to
- 2:04efficiently target potential customers.
- 2:07Musk's handling of the situation has drawn criticism from various
- 2:10quarters. His blunt response to
- 2:12advertisers leaving the platform telling them to go F themselves
- 2:16has been seen by many as a damaging approach likely to
- 2:19deter brands from returning. This sentiment was echoed by Lou
- 2:23Pascales, founder and CEO of marketing consultancy AJL
- 2:28Advisory, who described Musk's comments as potentially the
- 2:31closing chapter for brands relationships with X.
- 2:35Despite these challenges though, there is a sense of optimism
- 2:38about the potential of small and medium sized businesses to fill
- 2:41the revenue gap left by larger advertisers.
- 2:44However, this optimism is cautious as smaller businesses
- 2:48typically have much less to spend on advertising compared to
- 2:52their larger counterparts. X's bet is on its ability to
- 2:55provide efficient and effective advertising solutions that cater
- 3:00to these smaller budgets going forward.
- 3:03And the competition in the digital advertising space is
- 3:06very intense, with platforms like Meta, Google and Tiktok
- 3:10already established as popular choices for small and medium
- 3:13sized businesses. X's success in attracting these
- 3:16businesses will depend on how well it can differentiate its
- 3:20offerings and provide unique value that resonates with this
- 3:23new target market. And the controversy surrounding
- 3:25Musk's endorsement of an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory
- 3:28has not only impacted advertiser relationships but also drawn
- 3:32legal scrutiny. Musk's decision to file a
- 3:34lawsuit against Media Matters following the report on the
- 3:37issue adds another layer of complexity to X's ongoing
- 3:41challenges. In addition to losing
- 3:43advertisers, X is also seeing a reduction in content from major
- 3:47media brands. The absence of posts from
- 3:49accounts affiliated with Disney, including Star Wars, Pixar, and
- 3:53Marvel Studios, which have millions of followers combined,
- 3:57is a huge loss for the platform. Now, these accounts were
- 4:01previously very active on the platform and their departure
- 4:03reduces the diversity and appeal of content available to XS
- 4:06users. And the shift in focus to small
- 4:09and medium sized businesses requires not just a change in
- 4:12advertising strategy, but also a cultural shift within X.
- 4:16The platform must foster an environment that is welcoming
- 4:19and supportive of these smaller entities, understanding their
- 4:22unique needs and constraints. And amidst the backdrop, the
- 4:25future of X remains kind of uncertain at this point.
- 4:28While the platform has the potential to reinvent itself by
- 4:31successfully engaging with a new demographic of smaller brands
- 4:35and advertisers, the loss of these major brands in the
- 4:38controversy surrounding its owner pose significant
- 4:41challenges. We'll be watching this story
