Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke. I'm your
- 0:04Speaker 1: host Colleen Wits, and today we have in the building
- 0:08Speaker 1: music artists, philosopher entrepreneur Lar Russell, and I am truly excited.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Nothing made my day more than like what two days
- 0:19Speaker 1: ago when your I think his crew confirmed like two
- 0:21Speaker 1: or three days ago, and it literally they were like,
- 0:24Speaker 1: holy why are you so silent? You're supposed to be happy.
- 0:26Speaker 1: And I was like, well, I'm just making sure you
- 0:27Speaker 1: tell me the date because if you tell me a
- 0:29Speaker 1: month from now, I'm not getting excited because just in
- 0:32Speaker 1: case something happens. And she was like, so you're happy,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I said, what was the date two days from now?
- 0:36Speaker 1: I said, hell, yeah, I'm happy. Girl. Thanks shoutouts in
- 0:39Speaker 1: Nicole from the Black Effect for booking you. UM super
- 0:43Speaker 1: happy to have you. I love the name of your
- 0:45Speaker 1: company and I love what you're about. I'm the name
- 0:48Speaker 1: of his company is called Good comp Penny as in Points,
- 0:53Speaker 1: which I was like, oh, oh that's different, I said, Man,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Larrussell's hitting us with so much in teg pretty you
- 1:00Speaker 1: remind me of a cross between jay Z and Drake
- 1:02Speaker 1: and anyone that has not heard your music or kind
- 1:05Speaker 1: of even tried to cyberspy on you was like really
- 1:08Speaker 1: missing out, like on some good stuff. But um, since
- 1:12Speaker 1: I have you in my kitchen, uh the eating while
- 1:14Speaker 1: broke kitchen, I have to know what were you eating
- 1:16Speaker 1: when you were broke? Man. Today I'm going to be
- 1:21Speaker 1: making an egg sandwich. This was a classic. My mama
- 1:24Speaker 1: taught me how to make eggs when I was like five,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and I used to wake up every morning and make
- 1:28Speaker 1: eggs and that was the only thing I knew how
- 1:30Speaker 1: to make. So we're taking it back to the basics.
- 1:33Speaker 1: We got some eggs, we got some salt and pepper.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be doing it on garlic bread. Because
- 1:39Speaker 1: I usually use regular bread. We just throw it in
- 1:42Speaker 1: a toaster. But my boy Austin was like, you gotta
- 1:44Speaker 1: do garlic bread, so I figured we spice it up today. Yeah,
- 2:10Speaker 1: we've had a whole discussion about the whole garlic bread,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you and I because I've actually never even thought of
- 2:16Speaker 1: garlic bread. Actually, the first time I ever had garlic
- 2:18Speaker 1: bread for real, for real was the Texas toast in
- 2:21Speaker 1: the box. And now if you go into a store,
- 2:24Speaker 1: it is sold out, like you can't get it. It's
- 2:27Speaker 1: a miracle if you find one maybe on eBay, but
- 2:31Speaker 1: I don't know the pandemic. Just like said, take away
- 2:34Speaker 1: the best bread on earth? Um, but um, I'm excited
- 2:37Speaker 1: to eat with you, so let's get it cracking. Oh
- 2:41Speaker 1: my gosh, an egg a crack. I listened to rap
- 2:50Speaker 1: music so much that my girlfriend and I shout out
- 2:54Speaker 1: to will Let behind the mirror over there. Um. I
- 2:58Speaker 1: listened to wrap soap music so much that I actually
- 3:00Speaker 1: speak in metaphors and sometimes people have to stop me
- 3:03Speaker 1: and say, can we get it? You know you don't
- 3:06Speaker 1: have to, you don't have to rebreak it down in
- 3:08Speaker 1: puzzle terms. I'm a metaphor speakers. Can I move this
- 3:11Speaker 1: so I can crack some magazine? Slide over to my
- 3:15Speaker 1: side the greatest? Are you eating one too? So I
- 3:19Speaker 1: should make all you have to cook for both of
- 3:21Speaker 1: us because if it's trash, we can both discover that
- 3:24Speaker 1: garlic bread egg sandwiches is just not I'm going to
- 3:28Speaker 1: drop some butt up in here because my mom would
- 3:30Speaker 1: be like, use some PAM so you don't leave egg
- 3:34Speaker 1: stained all over the now. Are you one of those
- 3:36Speaker 1: people that are really going to use metal on age? Yes? Yeah, yeah,
- 3:43Speaker 1: we're not supposed to do that. Even every listener is
- 3:45Speaker 1: hearing that scratching is like, what is he doing? That's crazy?
- 3:49Speaker 1: What is he doing? His mama could have handled ever
- 3:51Speaker 1: let him do that. Man, she did. You wouldn't believe
- 3:54Speaker 1: how much stuff my mom let me do. Let I
- 3:59Speaker 1: don't even think we had tesline back then. Maybe I
- 4:03Speaker 1: don't remember. You're right, it was like a luxury. I'm sure, yeah, yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 1: back then. I think you're right. You just had to
- 4:11Speaker 1: butter everything down. Otherwise it's stuck or you get that
- 4:14Speaker 1: good old pam spray and you in it. Oh, I'm
- 4:17Speaker 1: getting it all over there. I'm not. I'm not a
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, So tell me a little bit about what
- 4:25Speaker 1: was going on. I know this is like the first
- 4:27Speaker 1: dish that you ever cooked, But tell me what was
- 4:29Speaker 1: going on during the time of Also, I usually add
- 4:34Speaker 1: bacon beat bacon bits and cheddar cheese. But I heard
- 4:38Speaker 1: y'all broke, so it wasn't here. So we're gonna go pepper.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I don't see salt over here. There's y'all struggling, Yo,
- 4:51Speaker 1: so much fun of us over here. You're not even
- 4:54Speaker 1: gonna use lorries because we don't Now, I'm not gonna
- 4:58Speaker 1: use lorries. I've never done that. I'm trying to you
- 5:00Speaker 1: could authentic. Wow, okay, okay, I respect it to be honest.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't use lowries. Well, I just started to recently,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but it's only because I married a black man from
- 5:12Speaker 1: Detroit who believes loss everything season and yes, beautiful. Um,
- 5:19Speaker 1: So what was going on growing up? Uh? Like around
- 5:24Speaker 1: when you were making egg sandwiches? I know you started
- 5:26Speaker 1: at five, you know, making these, but like kind of
- 5:30Speaker 1: tell me a little bit of your background growing up,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Like where you middle class? I thought I was middle
- 5:38Speaker 1: class until I got older and realized we're definitely lower
- 5:42Speaker 1: middle class. But my pops was a hustler, so we
- 5:45Speaker 1: were like we had enough money to be like the
- 5:49Speaker 1: richest nigga is in the broke neighborhood. Touch you feel it,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but definitely uh lord class, just regular neighborhood and be
- 6:00Speaker 1: hard to describe when people ask that question because you've
- 6:02Speaker 1: got to kind of growth in it to to be familiar.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Did you grow up in a two parent household? Yeah? Definitely. Wow, Okay, okay,
- 6:09Speaker 1: a lot of people on the show haven't. I'm going in. Um,
- 6:15Speaker 1: that's good. So when did you transition to music. Um.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I've been writing since I was like seven, whether through
- 6:26Speaker 1: like writing poems or just journaling, um, drawing. Just I've
- 6:32Speaker 1: just always used kind of writing an art as like
- 6:35Speaker 1: an artistic expression inform um. So yeah, since I was seven,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and it's kind of just cultivated me. And my sister
- 6:43Speaker 1: had this boom box and we used to download instrumentals
- 6:47Speaker 1: from line Wire and burn them on the CD the
- 6:50Speaker 1: instrumentals on the boom box and wrap over it. And
- 6:52Speaker 1: I remember we had a wrapped over nucket you buck,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and I was going crazy, but my sister was better
- 6:58Speaker 1: than me at the time, so I just had to
- 7:00Speaker 1: keep working. Your sister was rapping two. Yeah, my sister
- 7:04Speaker 1: was rapping two So does she still wrap? No, she doesn't.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So you surpassed her and the rap skills and then
- 7:11Speaker 1: she was like, I'm good. I don't. I don't think
- 7:14Speaker 1: she ever had a passion for it. It It was just
- 7:16Speaker 1: something we like to play around and do, and I
- 7:19Speaker 1: just kind of stuck with it. Okay, okay, okay, that's
- 7:22Speaker 1: pretty cool. So you is it that you like Drake,
- 7:29Speaker 1: because its like from what I've researched on you, is
- 7:31Speaker 1: that you from other articles and you could correct me
- 7:35Speaker 1: if I'm wrong. But your goal was to be on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the level I want to say, and on the I
- 7:45Speaker 1: don't know, like numbers level, because obviously talent wise, you're
- 7:48Speaker 1: on the same level as Drake, but I'm saying numbers wise,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you want to be on the same level, but independently. Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 1: is that correct? And not necessarily numbers wise, but impacting
- 8:01Speaker 1: notoriety wise. You know, I want people to respect me
- 8:05Speaker 1: as such, and partially the way to do that is
- 8:08Speaker 1: to put up the numbers. Right. If you're not scoring
- 8:10Speaker 1: as well as Jordan's, people don't expect you respect you
- 8:13Speaker 1: like a Jordan, right, Um, and yeah, to do that
- 8:16Speaker 1: independently and just show people that it's possible to be
- 8:19Speaker 1: the greatest at something without um having to utilize someone
- 8:24Speaker 1: else's infrastructure that they tell you you gotta go through
- 8:27Speaker 1: and you got to use these methods and you gotta
- 8:29Speaker 1: sell away your ownership, you know, like everyone knows early
- 8:32Speaker 1: on Drake didn't have his masters and had a horrible deal. Um,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I want to show people that you can get to
- 8:38Speaker 1: that level without having to go through that. Right. When
- 8:41Speaker 1: you say, uh, I just want to rewind you said
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was important for you to have impact and notoriety,
- 8:47Speaker 1: Like why, what does that even mean to me? It
- 8:52Speaker 1: just uh, it enables you to two It enables you
- 8:57Speaker 1: to make change, like right now, feed the whole hood
- 9:01Speaker 1: where I'm from. You know, from down to the end
- 9:03Speaker 1: of the year, I've been feeding the hood out of
- 9:04Speaker 1: my own pocket. And I've only been able to do
- 9:07Speaker 1: that because of my impact and my notoriety. I've become
- 9:10Speaker 1: so great that I make enough money to where I
- 9:12Speaker 1: could take care of the place that birth me right,
- 9:15Speaker 1: And a lot of people don't get to do that
- 9:18Speaker 1: because they don't have either the talent, devil or the
- 9:20Speaker 1: resource to do it. I've been able to do it independently.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I finish dropped this garly bread on this joint. It's already,
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's already done, already toasted it in Oh that's crazy. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I try to cheat it because I wanted to get
- 9:33Speaker 1: all up in yourkool aid. Wow, So I put the
- 9:36Speaker 1: tempo because you can't find that anywhere intriguing. Okay, let's
- 9:42Speaker 1: try it. Let's be a team here. Um dang, why
- 9:47Speaker 1: do we have to break from your story? Though? Right?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Is this not the hardest interview or process? This is great,
- 9:54Speaker 1: This is great I'm a I'm a multitasker. I'm gonna
- 9:57Speaker 1: try this still, all right, So we get the bread. Everyone,
- 10:00Speaker 1: we're getting the garlic bread situation together and we're putting
- 10:04Speaker 1: eggs in it. Yeah, this is new. I've never had this.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Shout out Austin for you have to turn off the store.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Ye let me get right on there. Berthie was talking
- 10:14Speaker 1: as mess about us being broke. Now, well, I was
- 10:17Speaker 1: going to put garlic bread on there, but you know
- 10:19Speaker 1: you guys did it so okay, completely forgot you were
- 10:23Speaker 1: going to actually make it. You don't even know how
- 10:24Speaker 1: to make garlic bread, do you. I mean, I use
- 10:27Speaker 1: Texas toes, so I was just gonna throw it up
- 10:30Speaker 1: on that joint and then it does what it does
- 10:32Speaker 1: and you're good after let's trying. Okay, let's go back
- 10:37Speaker 1: to notoriety and impact and you feeding your community. Okay,
- 10:46Speaker 1: stealing all your eggs, buddy, All right, here we go.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Do you want to sample it first before we get
- 10:52Speaker 1: into the nuts and bolts? Sure, all right, let's try
- 10:58Speaker 1: to Here we go. Okay, bread, I think Texas garlic,
- 11:16Speaker 1: but at least we now know we actually now know
- 11:21Speaker 1: how to do it in the future. But it's way
- 11:23Speaker 1: too much bread on this one, way too much bread.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It's like a bread with a side of eggs. It's
- 11:30Speaker 1: actually garlic, a garlic bread sandwich. Would you ever serve
- 11:36Speaker 1: the same? Almost? Mm hmm. That could be an ideal
- 11:41Speaker 1: but within a bread, right, yeah, look at me? Do
- 11:45Speaker 1: I Can we call it the eating wall Brooks and no?
- 11:47Speaker 1: That would probably be horrible haunts to name it the
- 11:49Speaker 1: eating wall broke sandwich? While you're at a pay pay
- 11:51Speaker 1: as you go, is it pay as you go or
- 11:53Speaker 1: pay what you want? Let's pay what you want? Proud
- 11:55Speaker 1: to pay? Well, comes sit sit with me so I
- 11:58Speaker 1: can get all up in your who I know he
- 12:01Speaker 1: jumped off camera on that one. Right, It's fine, it's
- 12:05Speaker 1: real life, real life. So let's go into moments Momo's
- 12:11Speaker 1: moms Cafe, momos cafe for a second. What inspired all
- 12:15Speaker 1: of that? Mm hmmm, or at least a partner just
- 12:23Speaker 1: seeing the need. There's a lot of homeless in Leo
- 12:30Speaker 1: and just people who don't get to eat. And I'm
- 12:32Speaker 1: always outside so I always see it. I'm always giving
- 12:35Speaker 1: someone money or take care of someone. Whether my mom
- 12:38Speaker 1: would drop off boxes of merch to the homeless community,
- 12:42Speaker 1: out there to the different encampments, and um, I'm just
- 12:46Speaker 1: always trying to help, right, and this is the way
- 12:48Speaker 1: that we can help now that I'm in a granded position.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I've done a few of these prior this year, but
- 12:54Speaker 1: just for a day. And when you do it today,
- 12:56Speaker 1: it's like everybody don't get a chance to eat. So
- 12:58Speaker 1: this time it was like, let's make sure everybody gets
- 13:01Speaker 1: a chance to e. Yeah, so I think what you're
- 13:05Speaker 1: doing is great. I'm gonna circle back to your music again. Um,
- 13:11Speaker 1: so you're a talented artist. Again, for anyone that hasn't
- 13:14Speaker 1: heard your music, I definitely would say you're in the
- 13:17Speaker 1: same lay as jay Z and Drake, which, by the way,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm a hardcore jay Z fan. Everyone that listens to
- 13:24Speaker 1: this show knows this. I have a huge five ft
- 13:27Speaker 1: painting that's literally the only one in the world that
- 13:30Speaker 1: was custom made of jay Z like hanging out and projects.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'm from Brooklyn. But but I will say this in
- 13:38Speaker 1: all truest form um. Currently, over the last couple of years,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I listened to Drake more and I feel guilty. I
- 13:47Speaker 1: feel like I'm cheating, like for real, Like I don't
- 13:50Speaker 1: let nobody know that, Like nobody knows that this is
- 13:53Speaker 1: the first time I've set it out loud, but in
- 13:54Speaker 1: my heart, I'm like, yo, just listen to jay Z today,
- 13:57Speaker 1: dog and you don't have to always pick Drake. But um,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I listened to your lyrics. I'm just wondering, like, what
- 14:03Speaker 1: did have you ever been signed? Uh? Not in the
- 14:08Speaker 1: capacity that artists get signed, Like I've never been signed
- 14:12Speaker 1: to a major deal. All of my deals have been partnerships,
- 14:15Speaker 1: like distribution deals. Uh No, I've done like record deals,
- 14:19Speaker 1: but in partnership for him, like fifty profit shares, like
- 14:22Speaker 1: I don't belong to anyone on my own entity and
- 14:26Speaker 1: we just split profit versus when a record label usually
- 14:29Speaker 1: signed to you, you're in like a royalty deal and
- 14:31Speaker 1: they own your ship. And if they don't own your ship,
- 14:34Speaker 1: they like and said for twenty years and they have
- 14:36Speaker 1: power and rule over when you release, how you release,
- 14:38Speaker 1: any of that. So I've never I've never been in
- 14:40Speaker 1: a major deal. All of my deals have been partnerships. Currently,
- 14:44Speaker 1: are you in a partnership deal or are you independent?
- 14:47Speaker 1: I've been independent the entire time, So all of these
- 14:49Speaker 1: partnerships are completely like me and my team do everything
- 14:53Speaker 1: you see you're controlling all the marketing everything, so in
- 14:57Speaker 1: they're controlling because nowadays it's a little confusing what a
- 15:00Speaker 1: record label is really bringing to the table at this point.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It depends now I mean with I mean if oh
- 15:08Speaker 1: my gosh, why am I spacing? Uh? When it comes
- 15:10Speaker 1: to who is Drake in Little Wayne? And what's their
- 15:13Speaker 1: name of their young Money is it? No, it's not
- 15:16Speaker 1: young Money, it's but no, no, no, he was signed
- 15:22Speaker 1: to Little Wayne, who was the young So they're so
- 15:29Speaker 1: from what I know of the history of the music industry,
- 15:33Speaker 1: Birdman had the best deal in the industry. So young
- 15:38Speaker 1: Money cash Money has literally the best deals on the table.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Cash money, cash money. So if cash Money calls you
- 15:47Speaker 1: up right now, I'm just playing it. It was advocated
- 15:51Speaker 1: not to see there's a cash Money had the best
- 15:56Speaker 1: deal in terms of their deal with Republic, not in him,
- 16:00Speaker 1: of the deals that they gave artists. Really, you don't
- 16:02Speaker 1: think they gave artists really good deals? No, because they
- 16:05Speaker 1: Drake didn't have his masters. He just got him. He
- 16:08Speaker 1: was in the royalty deal. A Little Wayne had to
- 16:09Speaker 1: take him to court to get his money. How could
- 16:12Speaker 1: they be in a great deal? Has been complaining for years.
- 16:17Speaker 1: How could they be in a great deal that doesn't
- 16:18Speaker 1: make any sense? Yeah, I didn't know that. Yeah, but yeah,
- 16:23Speaker 1: cash Money had a substantial deal. You know when dy
- 16:26Speaker 1: Day was a part of helping put that together with Republic,
- 16:28Speaker 1: they really broke the bank. When did you? So you're
- 16:32Speaker 1: a music artist, what is intriguing about you is, for instance,
- 16:37Speaker 1: today we gave you a release, Clarence, and you sat
- 16:40Speaker 1: there quietly and read it. Um, you're a businessman all
- 16:46Speaker 1: the way through. So where do you think you're an
- 16:48Speaker 1: entrepreneur before you're an artist? Definitely? Definitely. Before I was
- 16:53Speaker 1: releasing art, I was selling beats. I was making like
- 16:58Speaker 1: album covers for people and selling I've been I used
- 17:01Speaker 1: to sell swishers. One of your parents, Yeah, my pops
- 17:06Speaker 1: was a hustler. He sold everything under the sun except drugs,
- 17:09Speaker 1: like everything. I was gonna be my next question, cause
- 17:11Speaker 1: when I hear hustle, I'm like, what was he saying? Yeah, no,
- 17:13Speaker 1: man ever everything. But exactly so, you got your entrepreneur
- 17:17Speaker 1: spirit from him, and then you're talent girls kind of
- 17:21Speaker 1: came from you and your sister, like in this boombox.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Kind of my pops as well, he's very creatively inclined, right,
- 17:29Speaker 1: And he's a problem solver, right. And I feel like
- 17:33Speaker 1: a part of my talent and just my skill, my
- 17:35Speaker 1: business acumen is because I'm a problem solver. My favorite
- 17:38Speaker 1: thing to say is I'll figure it out, and I will. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 1: spoken like a true entrepreneur. You know how to pivot, right, Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 1: That's whenever I see a problem, I'm always like, it's
- 17:48Speaker 1: not a problem, it's a challenge. Right, what are we
- 17:51Speaker 1: going to do? I was I was walking to get
- 17:53Speaker 1: my daughter the other day and I was talking to
- 17:55Speaker 1: my brother, and uh, I was like, man, are you
- 17:58Speaker 1: looking for problems or are you looking for lu? You
- 18:01Speaker 1: usually find whatever you're looking for. I like that, you
- 18:05Speaker 1: know what you say? How I think. I think that's
- 18:09Speaker 1: why I like you so much. I genuinely I genuinely
- 18:14Speaker 1: funk with you hard. I don't say funk on the
- 18:16Speaker 1: show ever. Really, I genuinely mess with you. I was
- 18:20Speaker 1: just like, yo, is he as dope? So what I've
- 18:24Speaker 1: learned being a Christian and just living in the world
- 18:26Speaker 1: is like, there's so many dope people that are doing
- 18:29Speaker 1: great things externally. But now that I'm old, older, I've
- 18:34Speaker 1: grown enough. Wasn't to ask myself, well, if they're externally
- 18:39Speaker 1: have all this integrity, I just wonder, like if I
- 18:41Speaker 1: was a fly on their wall at home, you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: do they carry that same level of integrity? When I
- 18:48Speaker 1: listen to some of your rap lyrics, I'm like, Okay,
- 18:52Speaker 1: they're great. And then there's some that teeter into like
- 18:55Speaker 1: how you uh enjoy women in the past. I don't
- 18:59Speaker 1: know if current, I don't know. You know, it's hard
- 19:02Speaker 1: being a man. I'm not a man, So I just wondering,
- 19:05Speaker 1: like I think, if you're a fly on the wall
- 19:09Speaker 1: in my house, you'd see a human and supreme form
- 19:12Speaker 1: right in every aspect on their roller coaster and on
- 19:15Speaker 1: the journey. I think there's everyone around me could speak
- 19:19Speaker 1: to my my heart and my greatness and my moral
- 19:22Speaker 1: and my character. But I also have issues as a
- 19:26Speaker 1: human as well that I have to develop from and
- 19:29Speaker 1: that I've had to grow from just through a journey,
- 19:32Speaker 1: right like you, m you learn self respect and you
- 19:37Speaker 1: learn value, and you learn respecting other people throughout your journey,
- 19:40Speaker 1: depending on your experience and you're surrounding and what you witness, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: most of us just replicate whatever we see. If you
- 19:47Speaker 1: don't see anybody and like loving and nurturing situations and
- 19:51Speaker 1: providing that you don't often replicate it, right, because that's
- 19:54Speaker 1: not something you're familiar with, So just through that process.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Of course, I'm a human, but I think for the
- 20:01Speaker 1: most part, what you see externally of me, it's what
- 20:04Speaker 1: you see and when you meet me, I'm the exact
- 20:07Speaker 1: same person. Right when I hear your lyrics, you're I
- 20:13Speaker 1: feel like you're vulnerable, You're you're honest with yourself, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: I think for a lot of men, I don't want
- 20:20Speaker 1: to say a lot of men, for humans, I think
- 20:22Speaker 1: we we tend to either tell ourselves the truth that
- 20:25Speaker 1: we tell ourselves a lie, and it's the battle of
- 20:29Speaker 1: you know, but the only way to grow is to
- 20:32Speaker 1: tell yourself the truth. So there's a lot of vulnerability
- 20:35Speaker 1: in your lyrics, and I love it like I love
- 20:37Speaker 1: it for the same reason why I love a lot
- 20:39Speaker 1: of y'all. You know that you are my top three,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, so, Um, now I do do snooping. Obviously
- 20:48Speaker 1: I had the cyberstalk the hell out of you. Um,
- 20:51Speaker 1: but um, I noticed you were, like, if you're a
- 20:53Speaker 1: fan of mine, you come directly to me, Like, how
- 20:58Speaker 1: did you even conceive that concept of like you want
- 21:01Speaker 1: to come to my show, you buy the tickets from me.
- 21:03Speaker 1: No ticket messing, no no middleman, Like where did that
- 21:06Speaker 1: come from? Um? Life? That's always been the process, you know,
- 21:12Speaker 1: Like I've watched my dad hustle, and everyone who bought
- 21:15Speaker 1: product from him pulled up on him, or he pulled
- 21:17Speaker 1: up on them. If you want something from the Russell,
- 21:20Speaker 1: you have to go communicate with the Russell. When you
- 21:23Speaker 1: start adding third parties, you can either miss opportunity or
- 21:26Speaker 1: something to you misplaced. Like I used to do booking
- 21:29Speaker 1: for a theater and I was trying to book certain
- 21:31Speaker 1: artists and I'd have to go through their agents and
- 21:35Speaker 1: It'll be like a C, A W or whatever. Sometimes
- 21:37Speaker 1: they down even get to it, and then when I
- 21:40Speaker 1: meet them later, I'm like, bro, I was trying to
- 21:41Speaker 1: get you for it would have been dope because I
- 21:43Speaker 1: was building this thing. And they're like, man, I didn't
- 21:45Speaker 1: even know, right, And that's because you ain't holding at you.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And then as the more middlemen you have, the more
- 21:52Speaker 1: uh pie that's getting dipped into. And I'm a firm
- 21:55Speaker 1: believer and if I'm splitting pie, it needs to be
- 21:57Speaker 1: with people who helped me bake the pie, not some
- 22:00Speaker 1: on who's just there. Because the end, this is a standard.
- 22:03Speaker 1: You need to have a business manager, You need to
- 22:05Speaker 1: have a this that like, we're not going to do that.
- 22:07Speaker 1: You got to actually provide something. If you didn't bring
- 22:11Speaker 1: no ingredients or help bath this, you shouldn't get a
- 22:13Speaker 1: slice of it. Now, you do have a team, because
- 22:17Speaker 1: to get to you, I tried emailing, Okay, I was like,
- 22:20Speaker 1: this is the email, this is how I gets him.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But you do have a team. Do you have a
- 22:24Speaker 1: rule amongst your team that they don't get to say no,
- 22:28Speaker 1: that you have to at least they have to at
- 22:30Speaker 1: least present the opportunity to you. Because that's a valid
- 22:33Speaker 1: point that happens in the industry. Just about everything comes
- 22:36Speaker 1: to me. And I may have seen this, I was
- 22:38Speaker 1: telling Austin. No, I'm for sure I have. I was
- 22:42Speaker 1: telling Austin when it first came I had seen the
- 22:45Speaker 1: show similar and I was like, I don't know, because
- 22:48Speaker 1: I've seen the tide that eating while broke thing, and
- 22:50Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of people play on like
- 22:52Speaker 1: poor people and ship and I didn't. I didn't like it.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So I was just like, I'm not gonna deal with
- 22:57Speaker 1: that right now and let me see as it cultivates. So,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I mean, I've seen it. There's not too much that
- 23:01Speaker 1: comes through the email that I don't see. And if
- 23:03Speaker 1: I don't see it, my two right hands always see
- 23:06Speaker 1: it and it and it still makes his way to me.
- 23:08Speaker 1: So with thet I broke, that was one of the reasons.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I was, like the title, I don't like when people
- 23:15Speaker 1: play on the on poverty and like, it's just like
- 23:19Speaker 1: when I created Eating Wall Broke, I I was like,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I just I have so many dope successful friends that
- 23:28Speaker 1: are like millionaires and blowing celebrities, entrepreneurs, and they always
- 23:32Speaker 1: have these crazy stories like they were in jail, or
- 23:34Speaker 1: they were male escorts or just crazy as stories, and
- 23:39Speaker 1: I love them. I live for them. We go on
- 23:40Speaker 1: a hike and like, tell me more, what else did
- 23:42Speaker 1: you do? You're a hugger? Okay, let's there, you know,
- 23:45Speaker 1: And so I just love the journey. I actually don't
- 23:48Speaker 1: even I do enjoy the solutions, but I love the journey.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I love the storytelling. I love the hero's journey. And
- 23:54Speaker 1: so when I came up with Eating Wall Broke, I
- 23:56Speaker 1: was like, well, we gotta started at the root, you
- 23:58Speaker 1: know that everyone can relate to, like, you know, people
- 24:01Speaker 1: that are aspiring rappers that are literally only have two
- 24:03Speaker 1: pennies to rub together. And I named the Eating Wall Broke.
- 24:06Speaker 1: But then I realized, damn. Every time I pitched the show,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I have to say, hey, I have this great opportunity
- 24:13Speaker 1: for you. It's it's ignore the name. Let me tell
- 24:16Speaker 1: you what it is. And I always have to say,
- 24:19Speaker 1: ignore the name, and then I tell them, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 1: the show is about inspiring people and just kind of
- 24:24Speaker 1: leveling with them and inspiring them that they can do
- 24:27Speaker 1: exactly what you did, or they should believe in themselves
- 24:29Speaker 1: no matter what their environment isn't. But I always have
- 24:31Speaker 1: to do this thing her. That's why I like certain
- 24:36Speaker 1: things will get to me through email, but since it
- 24:38Speaker 1: doesn't have full context, it's like I can't tend to
- 24:42Speaker 1: it right because it doesn't resonate. But that's why I'm
- 24:44Speaker 1: always somebody. I'm so open. If you see me anywhere,
- 24:47Speaker 1: you can comes to me and address me, and once
- 24:50Speaker 1: I meet you and feel your energy, it's like, okay,
- 24:52Speaker 1: that makes sense, right, But emails have no context like that.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Just you gotta take it for whatever you want I'm uh.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Pitpole told me this once. He said, if they locked
- 25:03Speaker 1: the door, you're climbing through the window. I was like, oh,
- 25:05Speaker 1: he didn't respond, and nicolete better use that show me
- 25:22Speaker 1: you know, it's running this show and uh, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 1: get his attention. And not only did I do that,
- 25:28Speaker 1: but I liked you so much. I literally was like,
- 25:31Speaker 1: and your Leisure should have him, Charlemagne should have him,
- 25:34Speaker 1: all these people should have him, and she was like, mmmm,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I think they already did. Like I was like the
- 25:39Speaker 1: last one to the table, like these are the shows
- 25:41Speaker 1: he should be on. I don't even even never had
- 25:44Speaker 1: an opportunity with him, but I was like, damn, all
- 25:45Speaker 1: your publicists over there like this is who I want, um,
- 25:49Speaker 1: And and that's you know why we name the show,
- 25:54Speaker 1: you know, at the end of the day, eating Wall Broke.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But I get it because I literally every time I
- 25:58Speaker 1: sell someone on the idea, I'm like, just ignore the name,
- 26:01Speaker 1: ignore the name. But I'm glad that you take time
- 26:04Speaker 1: to come and sit with me, and super excited. I
- 26:07Speaker 1: love literally everything you're about um and uh sorry, uh.
- 26:13Speaker 1: One of the things that kind of surprised me is
- 26:17Speaker 1: the entrepreneur in you and like also, like, why did
- 26:25Speaker 1: you name your company the good compenny? Right? Well, I
- 26:30Speaker 1: mean good company just because there's a quote. Let's say
- 26:33Speaker 1: your mamma say you just by the company you keep, right,
- 26:36Speaker 1: So I feel like good company isn't compassing of just
- 26:39Speaker 1: I like to have good people around me, and we
- 26:41Speaker 1: build great energy when we go into places. We're good
- 26:43Speaker 1: company to have, right, just that name, it's welcoming. And
- 26:48Speaker 1: then I use pennies because I feel like pennies are
- 26:50Speaker 1: undervalued and overlooked. Right, if you see a penny on
- 26:53Speaker 1: the ground, you usually don't stop and pick it up.
- 26:55Speaker 1: But imagine if you stopped and picked up every penny
- 26:57Speaker 1: you walk past throughout your whole life, only have more
- 27:00Speaker 1: money than a lot of the people beside you. Even
- 27:02Speaker 1: though it's a penny, there's a multitude of them, Like
- 27:05Speaker 1: we passed them up all the time everywhere, and no
- 27:08Speaker 1: one really cares. Right, But it exists for a reason.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I sometimes think pennies exists to go in my daughter's mouth.
- 27:18Speaker 1: That was a terrible joke. I'm a new mom, I'm
- 27:21Speaker 1: a random mom. I spend most of my days trying
- 27:24Speaker 1: to commence my daughter, not to try a new way
- 27:26Speaker 1: to commit suicide right right now? You see. Now you
- 27:29Speaker 1: see why our parents are like tired by eight o'clock
- 27:32Speaker 1: because they spent the entire day like what do you
- 27:35Speaker 1: have to do next? But? Um, but what can people
- 27:40Speaker 1: expect from you in the future music wise? Um? A
- 27:45Speaker 1: ton of it? Oh a lot of it. You know.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I'm someone I live by this theory of like leaving empty.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I don't want to leave with nothing on my plate
- 27:55Speaker 1: and all the music I have I intend to release
- 27:57Speaker 1: and get out. I don't want to sit on things
- 28:00Speaker 1: for years. Um. I'm currently building crazy infrastructure at home.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I keep saying I'm building Disneyland because we're building something
- 28:08Speaker 1: like that completely laterally. Um but really, uh, I don't know.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I don't have any expectation of myself. So I think
- 28:16Speaker 1: people shouldn't. They should just enjoy the journey. Like how
- 28:18Speaker 1: you say you've been spying, Like, I hope when you
- 28:20Speaker 1: spy you're smiling because it's just it's a hell of
- 28:23Speaker 1: a show to watch. You haven't got to see too
- 28:26Speaker 1: many artists actually make it in front of us, right,
- 28:30Speaker 1: Like we see the resulting that the label post and share,
- 28:33Speaker 1: but we don't see like him going City of the
- 28:36Speaker 1: City Hey, yeah, I'm out. I'm gonna do a pop
- 28:37Speaker 1: up to you know, like we don't get to see
- 28:39Speaker 1: that part of the journey, and I'm showing all of it.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm showing us running merch fulfilment out of my house.
- 28:44Speaker 1: My mom is dropping them, dropping them off, like I'm
- 28:46Speaker 1: showing the entire process, and we're sharing the gyms alone.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So I think people should just stay tuned and and
- 28:53Speaker 1: and this. We got enough sequels to to beat the
- 28:56Speaker 1: Fast and Furious series, you know, like we're coming like that,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and you will do your pop YouTube pop up shows, right,
- 29:03Speaker 1: We're doing one tonight. I just I just got off
- 29:06Speaker 1: a plane and I was like, man, I want to
- 29:08Speaker 1: do a show. So we announced it and now the
- 29:10Speaker 1: show tickets have been selling tonight. It's going to be
- 29:13Speaker 1: at going this is. This one's gonna be special because
- 29:21Speaker 1: it's an unplugged version and it's like live Q and
- 29:23Speaker 1: A like people eight, I'm not gonna lie, like I
- 29:28Speaker 1: would love to go come on, please come on. Man's
- 29:36Speaker 1: dope about our shows. It's like this one is a
- 29:39Speaker 1: bit different, but generally with our shows, like I used
- 29:43Speaker 1: the second half of my set to just let the
- 29:45Speaker 1: fans choose the songs they wanted here, and I wrap
- 29:48Speaker 1: whatever they say they want to hear, right, So it's
- 29:50Speaker 1: like a really interactive show. We did one in New
- 29:53Speaker 1: York and Brooklyn when we went out there and sold
- 29:55Speaker 1: out in six hours five hundred tickets. So now I've
- 29:58Speaker 1: just kind of been in this wave where it's like
- 30:01Speaker 1: I just be like, I feel like doing it, and
- 30:03Speaker 1: we do it and it usually goes well. And then
- 30:06Speaker 1: who kind of does the logistics? So myself for Naughty,
- 30:11Speaker 1: he's a member of my team. He helps with booking,
- 30:14Speaker 1: Teata helps with logistics. Millie is on my team so
- 30:17Speaker 1: anytime we go to a tour route and she kind
- 30:19Speaker 1: of plans and give a guy in girl team. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I like that because sometimes you work with people and
- 30:26Speaker 1: they like Slay Holder, like Charloagne's companies pretty pretty much
- 30:31Speaker 1: ran by women, Black women, which is amazing. Man. I
- 30:36Speaker 1: wouldn't be where I am without women. I have a
- 30:38Speaker 1: team of like the most incredible creative intuit and women
- 30:42Speaker 1: when it comes to just business and everything. Now, one
- 30:46Speaker 1: of the things I did see, and I could be wrong,
- 30:49Speaker 1: maybe lack of research, um, but I feel like on
- 30:53Speaker 1: one of the things you had posted was like if
- 30:55Speaker 1: people buy your records, they have like some kind of
- 30:58Speaker 1: ownership in it, so not necessarily if you buy it
- 31:02Speaker 1: some people so on on. Usually on projects, I'll sell
- 31:06Speaker 1: my album before it comes to streaming, and anyone who
- 31:09Speaker 1: buys that project is up for selection to receive a royalty.
- 31:13Speaker 1: So I usually go through the list of buyers and
- 31:15Speaker 1: I'll pick like fifty to a hundred people, sometimes a
- 31:18Speaker 1: hundred fifty if I'm feeling good, sometimes two, and I'll
- 31:20Speaker 1: give them a percentage of royalty in different songs from
- 31:23Speaker 1: that album. You can also buy royalties, like you could
- 31:26Speaker 1: make an offer to purchase a share. So if you
- 31:28Speaker 1: have a favorite song you're like, I love this song,
- 31:31Speaker 1: I know it's gonna be big, or just I love
- 31:33Speaker 1: this song, I just want to have a stake in it,
- 31:35Speaker 1: you can make an offer to me and say I
- 31:37Speaker 1: want five percent of the revenue from this song. I'm
- 31:39Speaker 1: willing to give you a thousand dollars five hundred dollars,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and I'll read I'll hit you and negotiate and say
- 31:44Speaker 1: I'm willing to take this so I'm not, and then
- 31:47Speaker 1: I send you a percentage through the distro you collect
- 31:49Speaker 1: every month into perpetuity for the rest of your life. Yeah,
- 31:52Speaker 1: I've never heard of someone doing that, but I've never
- 31:54Speaker 1: heard of song. I was like, did he do what
- 31:56Speaker 1: I think he did? How do you? How do you?
- 32:01Speaker 1: How did you come up with that? Though? How it
- 32:03Speaker 1: was just a late night thought of Like, I've always
- 32:06Speaker 1: been split in revenue with my team. Everyone who helped, producers, engineers,
- 32:11Speaker 1: they all get a percent. So one day it was
- 32:13Speaker 1: just like, we should give the fans something. They listened
- 32:16Speaker 1: to this ship every day. Imagine if your favorite jay
- 32:18Speaker 1: Z song, I Man, you listen to it every day,
- 32:20Speaker 1: but you don't want to present it my fans, like
- 32:23Speaker 1: Baggas claim, blew up. Some of my fans had equity
- 32:25Speaker 1: in that song when it first dropped, that a year
- 32:28Speaker 1: before it even took off. So they for the rest
- 32:31Speaker 1: of their life they're going to be getting money off,
- 32:33Speaker 1: Baggs claimed, because they just made the right call. They
- 32:35Speaker 1: enjoyed the song so and then, but they reached out
- 32:40Speaker 1: to you, or how did you even announce that I
- 32:43Speaker 1: made this big announcement in Tieta on my team. She
- 32:46Speaker 1: created this form for people to go fill out and
- 32:49Speaker 1: you put all your information, you put your offer amount,
- 32:51Speaker 1: how much you want it comes to a database. I
- 32:53Speaker 1: look at all the offers. I'll email you and say, yeah,
- 32:55Speaker 1: I sent your offer, I liked it, I accept me.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I go every offered person over, even through email, like
- 33:03Speaker 1: when we do bookings and ship like, people are always
- 33:05Speaker 1: surprised that they're talking to me. It's like, it's my business.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Of course you're talking to me. It makes sense, right,
- 33:12Speaker 1: I most of my companies, for social reason, cannot get
- 33:16Speaker 1: them past a certain threshold. I don't know if it's
- 33:19Speaker 1: like my whatever, but um so most of my companies
- 33:23Speaker 1: are smaller. So I'll email, but I email under an alias.
- 33:25Speaker 1: It would be like Samantha, and it'll be like Samantha
- 33:29Speaker 1: was so crazy. When I used to send out emails
- 33:31Speaker 1: to get booked, to go to venues and try to
- 33:33Speaker 1: book them, I used to act like I was my
- 33:35Speaker 1: own manager. And then eventually it's like, bro, it's me,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I am the Russell. I'm gonna venue. This is what
- 33:42Speaker 1: I want to do right. And I've gotten so much
- 33:44Speaker 1: more rapport response because it's like, of course people want
- 33:47Speaker 1: to talk to you like I'm doing it right. You
- 33:50Speaker 1: should you didn't feel at some point, um it hinders
- 33:56Speaker 1: how much more you can get because like, I'll give
- 34:00Speaker 1: it pretty v uh. I emailed her and I'm like, okay,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you know, she responded and then like it was her
- 34:09Speaker 1: and then she got on the phone with me. She
- 34:10Speaker 1: like just called me, and then I hear the Jamaican accent.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I'm like, wait a minute, I said, and we ended
- 34:16Speaker 1: up vibing on the phone like for forty five minutes.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And but it was it was the first time that
- 34:21Speaker 1: I cold called emailed somebody and not only did they
- 34:25Speaker 1: respond in record speed, but I mean, first of all,
- 34:27Speaker 1: that girl is as humble as they yet, but that
- 34:30Speaker 1: was the first time that I've ever seen like someone
- 34:33Speaker 1: on that level just be like, what's up, what's let's
- 34:36Speaker 1: do it? She was like what do you want me
- 34:38Speaker 1: to cook? I got beans and then I was like nope.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I was just like you know, you know, and it
- 34:44Speaker 1: was past um, no team, no nothing, And you know,
- 34:47Speaker 1: I don't even know it was her until she called me,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, it's you. You know, that's
- 34:51Speaker 1: like if jay Z calls me after her n email
- 34:52Speaker 1: and be like right, people usually get that same shot,
- 34:55Speaker 1: but it just builds a different relationship, right You You
- 34:59Speaker 1: respect what someone is building a lot more when you
- 35:02Speaker 1: know they're working it right. It's hard to suck someone
- 35:04Speaker 1: over when it's like, oh it's you. They're right. There's
- 35:08Speaker 1: a different report you have to do. You have a
- 35:12Speaker 1: internal rule about letting new people into your camp because
- 35:15Speaker 1: it seems like you have a very large camp. It
- 35:18Speaker 1: is kind of my kind of Yeah, even my immediate
- 35:21Speaker 1: group is pretty large. Uh, there's not really a rule,
- 35:24Speaker 1: just an energy, right, if I know who I like
- 35:28Speaker 1: and who I don't like, and who fits and who doesn't.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Sometimes will trial people out and it's like that didn't
- 35:33Speaker 1: really work, and we kind of maneuver forward. But it's
- 35:36Speaker 1: not really any rule, just your energy, how you feel,
- 35:40Speaker 1: how everyone feels about you, how you feel about everyone,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and we could usually get a sense of that really fast.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I also have like I like to work with people
- 35:49Speaker 1: who work hard, like the best. You know, I don't
- 35:52Speaker 1: want to It's like, bro, I'm playing at a high
- 35:54Speaker 1: level at all times. If you can't keep up, you
- 35:56Speaker 1: need to go on the other court and play with
- 35:58Speaker 1: the little kids for a bid to your game. Get up.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Have you experienced failure? Let me just rephrase that, have
- 36:07Speaker 1: you experienced perceived failure? I hate the word, of course, yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 1: of course about perceived failure and like what the experience was. Man,
- 36:16Speaker 1: I've had shows where there was five people in the
- 36:18Speaker 1: crowd and I had to pay for venue. I rented
- 36:21Speaker 1: a sprinter van to get my team there. We brought equipment,
- 36:24Speaker 1: We brought a ton of merch that we didn't sail
- 36:26Speaker 1: because there wasn't no one to sell it to um
- 36:30Speaker 1: And I was a tough ride home. You know, I
- 36:32Speaker 1: was silent. I'm usually allowding and talking and childing, but
- 36:35Speaker 1: I was silent, right. And I've had several of those,
- 36:38Speaker 1: uh moments of perceived failure even beyond that, just sometimes
- 36:42Speaker 1: releasing merch and putting all your money into it and
- 36:44Speaker 1: it doesn't go. The people don't react. Early on, I
- 36:47Speaker 1: had a lot of albums. I dropped twenty two albums.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I've had a lot of albums. Early on, I was like,
- 36:52Speaker 1: this is gonna be Yeah, we've been We didn't blow nothing. Yeah,
- 36:59Speaker 1: way mote in not even twenty two singles. No, And
- 37:03Speaker 1: that's just my catalog. I've written other EPs single albums
- 37:07Speaker 1: for a bunch of other people, so, but just in
- 37:09Speaker 1: my own album, it's twenty two. When you experienced perceived failure,
- 37:16Speaker 1: can you walk me through your thoughts um usually as
- 37:22Speaker 1: negative first, right, it's all like I look for all
- 37:25Speaker 1: the problems, what I didn't do, how I didn't do
- 37:29Speaker 1: it while I could have done it better, And then
- 37:31Speaker 1: eventually it just becomes like analytical solution based, like I
- 37:36Speaker 1: always want to I always want to prove me wrong
- 37:41Speaker 1: or anybody wrong. I'm like, well, I'm I'm Finnish. Next time,
- 37:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it triple the sides and it's gonna
- 37:47Speaker 1: be a success. But yeah, it's usually just that emotional
- 37:51Speaker 1: emotional turmoil that comes with it first, where you know,
- 37:54Speaker 1: you feel that dark cloud over you and sometimes you
- 37:57Speaker 1: gotta cry or you gotta sit in there and and
- 37:59Speaker 1: kind of be in that space until you can work
- 38:01Speaker 1: through it. I'm surprised that you didn't just say, well,
- 38:06Speaker 1: maybe maybe this is a question. But in that negative space,
- 38:10Speaker 1: have you questioned you're worth? Like whether you know like
- 38:15Speaker 1: or five people. I get the logistics because I as
- 38:18Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, I get like, what did we do? What
- 38:20Speaker 1: could we have done differently? But in that negative space,
- 38:23Speaker 1: can you say and you are prolific for sure, but
- 38:28Speaker 1: have you questioned your own not? Not in music, like
- 38:32Speaker 1: anytime I failed in music. It wasn't a question of
- 38:35Speaker 1: my own worth. It was just like they don't see it. Right.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I knew, I knew I was it. I'm just like
- 38:42Speaker 1: they don't see it. I haven't done enough work for
- 38:44Speaker 1: them to see it. They don't see it. Um. So
- 38:47Speaker 1: I've never questioned my worth in that aspect. If I'm
- 38:49Speaker 1: questioning my worth, it's usually through some life ship like
- 38:52Speaker 1: me doing something um against my own morals or against
- 38:57Speaker 1: my own code, or just I let somebody down on
- 39:00Speaker 1: that's fear to me. Those are moments I questioned my
- 39:03Speaker 1: worth when I can't show up for my daughter in
- 39:05Speaker 1: a way that I felt like I should. Things like that,
- 39:07Speaker 1: but not music, and I put my our case. No, yeah, no,
- 39:13Speaker 1: not career wise at all. I know what I'm worth
- 39:17Speaker 1: in my career. I know what I deliver, I know
- 39:19Speaker 1: what I bring forth, and even even through life like
- 39:22Speaker 1: I'm getting to a point where I know my impact
- 39:26Speaker 1: and how significant I am to you know, the life
- 39:29Speaker 1: around me in the world. I'm feeding the community, needing
- 39:33Speaker 1: the community. So there's a book I just recently checked out.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I don't know if you've ever heard of it. It's
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'm called Male Versus man, DeAndre Whitfield shoutouts to him.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I picked up the book. I thought it was for men,
- 39:46Speaker 1: but so I got it from my uh my friend
- 39:49Speaker 1: and um but I ended up reading it because I
- 39:53Speaker 1: like to read. I'm literally in a book headed that
- 39:58Speaker 1: I am obsessed with books. Um. But I read the
- 40:02Speaker 1: book and one of the things he pointed out in
- 40:04Speaker 1: the book, which I will gift you the book now
- 40:07Speaker 1: that I have, I think I have your address on
- 40:09Speaker 1: I'll get you information. Um. But anyways, one of the
- 40:12Speaker 1: things he talked about was like the male versus man.
- 40:16Speaker 1: You know, the mail is self seeking and the man
- 40:19Speaker 1: is of service, which is different programs. I never thought
- 40:22Speaker 1: of that, Like, so when a guy takes me on
- 40:24Speaker 1: a date, I'm like, are you trying to give it me?
- 40:27Speaker 1: Are you trying to serve me? Now? At first I
- 40:30Speaker 1: was like, oh, that's messed up to like seek service,
- 40:32Speaker 1: But as a female, it's actually not because you know,
- 40:35Speaker 1: we seek protection and we proceed. Some of us do
- 40:39Speaker 1: need help providing and some of us need of course,
- 40:42Speaker 1: everyone wants to be professed to marry me the announced
- 40:45Speaker 1: the world, I'm the one. Um. I also in a
- 40:50Speaker 1: hip hop head and after reading that book, lately, it's
- 40:53Speaker 1: like every song on the radio is like shout out
- 40:56Speaker 1: to my sneaky link or or yeah, I'm having sex
- 40:59Speaker 1: with a my side chick raw. But I'm never gonna
- 41:02Speaker 1: leave you. I'm never gonna leave my family for you.
- 41:06Speaker 1: And I'm like, yo, did he really just say he's
- 41:09Speaker 1: having sex with his side chick raw and that's why
- 41:12Speaker 1: she's attached? And some of these lyrics are so terrible
- 41:15Speaker 1: to women. I'm like, at what point? And who is responsible?
- 41:19Speaker 1: And this is just an honest like friend or you
- 41:22Speaker 1: know you you you have responsibilities as a philosopher and
- 41:28Speaker 1: entrepreneur and a leader and being a vulnerable man yourself,
- 41:31Speaker 1: Like who is who do you think is responsible? Is
- 41:34Speaker 1: it the art form, is it the male energy, or
- 41:38Speaker 1: is it us women? Uh? I don't think anyone is responsible,
- 41:44Speaker 1: but I think everyone is accountable. I hear the same
- 41:47Speaker 1: music coming from females as well. I agree. I went
- 41:50Speaker 1: to a nail salon. I saw nothing but strippers and
- 41:53Speaker 1: all the girls. I don't I don't think there's a responsibility,
- 41:56Speaker 1: but there's an accountability. And uh, I think that's one
- 41:59Speaker 1: of those things. Sad. It's hard to ever be what
- 42:02Speaker 1: you never see right, A lot of these men that
- 42:05Speaker 1: make it in hip hop and music, they haven't had
- 42:08Speaker 1: great examples of leadership or of men that have that
- 42:13Speaker 1: in them to not fall to desire, or that are
- 42:16Speaker 1: disciplined or impeccable in their soul or fulfill to where
- 42:21Speaker 1: they don't need to seek or go get extra and
- 42:23Speaker 1: the same with women. So I think that's just uh.
- 42:26Speaker 1: We often ask these artists to build things that they
- 42:30Speaker 1: don't have the tools to build, right, Like, if you
- 42:34Speaker 1: go look in their toolbox, it's it's like you want
- 42:40Speaker 1: them to build a house, you guys. Feel like jay
- 42:42Speaker 1: Z kind of touched on that in uh. I want
- 42:44Speaker 1: to say four for four one of the albums like
- 42:46Speaker 1: where he was the first one to be where we're
- 42:49Speaker 1: see that, Oh wow, you've upgraded your toolbox, right, But
- 42:53Speaker 1: a lot of artists don't have that. We're coming out
- 42:55Speaker 1: of environments that don't nurture that type of behavior or system.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Like when I was coming up, the older men around
- 43:02Speaker 1: me was like players do like what you feel me,
- 43:05Speaker 1: So you grow up embracing that and wanted to be
- 43:08Speaker 1: like that. That's what you replicate, that's what you know.
- 43:10Speaker 1: You don't see anyone I've I don't think I've ever
- 43:15Speaker 1: seen a man that was just so in love and
- 43:18Speaker 1: revere their family so much and treated the woman so well,
- 43:22Speaker 1: like they meant the world to me. For me to
- 43:24Speaker 1: be like, man, that's what I want, right, Very seldom
- 43:28Speaker 1: do you witness that and experience that. But yet you
- 43:31Speaker 1: expect someone to conduct themselves in that manner, that's what's
- 43:35Speaker 1: not gonna happen. That's interesting. So when it comes to
- 43:38Speaker 1: accountability in your personal life, who holds you accountable? Is it?
- 43:44Speaker 1: I don't want to answer questions. Um, everyone around me
- 43:49Speaker 1: in a sense holds me accountable in some way, but
- 43:52Speaker 1: ultimately me like I have to be. I have to
- 43:56Speaker 1: be the one that wants to get up every day
- 43:58Speaker 1: and put in work and be better and want to
- 44:00Speaker 1: drop my daughter off and pick her up and do
- 44:02Speaker 1: work and things like that. But everyone around me, from myself,
- 44:06Speaker 1: my mom, my dad, my daughter, her mother, Tieta, Milli, Testy, everyone, Fani,
- 44:11Speaker 1: just all of my friends hold me accountable in some aspect.
- 44:15Speaker 1: They're always in my you know, I can only stoop
- 44:18Speaker 1: so low sometimes before someone it's like, hey, bro, what
- 44:21Speaker 1: we're doing? Oh? I like that? I like that? Okay,
- 44:26Speaker 1: is there anything that your fans or me, I don't
- 44:31Speaker 1: know about you. Um, I mean everything. I mean, I
- 44:39Speaker 1: guess you only know the music because you're kind of
- 44:42Speaker 1: signed a camera on your entrepreneurship. You also do all
- 44:46Speaker 1: these little I don't want to say little, but these
- 44:48Speaker 1: gems on social media. Um So when I say is
- 44:52Speaker 1: there anything we don't know about you? I feel like
- 44:55Speaker 1: you're It's like you learn a lesson. You're like, let's
- 44:57Speaker 1: put it out there. What about there really somebody else
- 45:02Speaker 1: today social battle that I be like, I don't know
- 45:17Speaker 1: if I want to be personal man real no such thing.
- 45:22Speaker 1: I've had the realist reals, and I share there's no
- 45:25Speaker 1: such thing. Because there's a billion people in the world
- 45:28Speaker 1: and someone's been through exactly what you've been through, and
- 45:30Speaker 1: they may need your help, right, but you're refusing to help.
- 45:33Speaker 1: You have all the tools and all the means to
- 45:35Speaker 1: help them, but you're refusing to do it because of
- 45:38Speaker 1: your own fear, right, And Like, I don't want to
- 45:40Speaker 1: deny nobody of that tool. Like I want people to
- 45:43Speaker 1: be able to grow. If that's going to be through
- 45:45Speaker 1: me just sharing what I felt or experienced, that's an
- 45:48Speaker 1: easy call, right do you do? And the the world
- 45:55Speaker 1: is always a sensitive around this topic, but I'm gonna
- 45:58Speaker 1: go ahead and throw it out there. But do you
- 46:00Speaker 1: believe in therapy? Do you do therapy? So I recently
- 46:04Speaker 1: started therapy, probably a few months back, and I had
- 46:07Speaker 1: a few sessions, and it's uh cool. I'm not consistent
- 46:11Speaker 1: with it because I don't feel like, um, I'm gaining
- 46:16Speaker 1: much from it. But I also had like an expectation
- 46:19Speaker 1: of what I was supposed to get from it, like
- 46:20Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be here, like I have a sessions,
- 46:23Speaker 1: like man, I'm a gold new Man, right, And that's
- 46:25Speaker 1: not how it happens, and um, for me, I just
- 46:28Speaker 1: I just realized that it was worth that I need
- 46:30Speaker 1: to do right. I don't need anyone's help to be
- 46:32Speaker 1: a better human. I just need to choose to be
- 46:34Speaker 1: a better human and commit to that. That's not something
- 46:37Speaker 1: I need to talk to someone about. If you want to, yes,
- 46:40Speaker 1: But for me personally, it's like I built an entire empire.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I could definitely build myself as a man, right. I
- 46:47Speaker 1: don't need anyone's assistant to do that. But I chose.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I've chosen not to write, I've chosen not to allocate
- 46:54Speaker 1: my energy towards that, which is the only reason I
- 46:56Speaker 1: haven't grown in any way that I wish to. It's
- 47:00Speaker 1: funny you say that because I recently full vulnerability here.
- 47:04Speaker 1: I recently did try therapy and I kind of felt like,
- 47:09Speaker 1: oh man, this is gonna sound really shitty for all
- 47:11Speaker 1: those people that give it. But I felt like, yeah,
- 47:14Speaker 1: I wasn't getting the response in that I needed, in
- 47:17Speaker 1: the in the record speed that I needed, And it
- 47:19Speaker 1: was like I knew the answers, but I just wasn't
- 47:22Speaker 1: choosing to make the choice that I needed to make.
- 47:26Speaker 1: And in therapy, it takes so much uprooting of your
- 47:29Speaker 1: childhood to get to the route that I was like, yo,
- 47:32Speaker 1: I'm not trying to relive the thing that I ran from,
- 47:35Speaker 1: like trying to give me PTSD. Like no, I'm good,
- 47:38Speaker 1: But I do agree with you, and I'm glad you
- 47:40Speaker 1: were honest about that because people say therapy, therapy, therapy,
- 47:43Speaker 1: and I actually thought you weren't going to say that
- 47:47Speaker 1: you do therapy because I low key feel like your
- 47:51Speaker 1: vulnerability and your lyrics is a form of therapy. Definitely, Definitely,
- 47:56Speaker 1: that's where I get to get all of that from.
- 47:58Speaker 1: And someone gets you, man, and like, because I feel
- 48:01Speaker 1: like Drake every time. Writing and talking really helps. And
- 48:06Speaker 1: that's the thing about the past, like you saying, and
- 48:08Speaker 1: that shows you how much how deep your trauma is,
- 48:12Speaker 1: because you think like speaking about it is reliving it.
- 48:15Speaker 1: You can't relive the past, right, It's already been lived,
- 48:18Speaker 1: it's gone. It only exists in your memory. You can't
- 48:21Speaker 1: relive it. But we when trauma hits in a certain way,
- 48:24Speaker 1: it makes you feel like you're going through that experience again,
- 48:27Speaker 1: but it's not. And you really have to work through
- 48:29Speaker 1: that to get You got to go through it to
- 48:31Speaker 1: get through it, right, yeah, yeah, Or you can try.
- 48:39Speaker 1: I don't. I tried my hardest to I believe. I
- 48:42Speaker 1: tell myself this. Every store at the end of every
- 48:45Speaker 1: storm is a rainbow. So the faster I don't cope
- 48:49Speaker 1: through it or the more I do not cope in them,
- 48:53Speaker 1: the faster I get through the storm. So like, if
- 48:56Speaker 1: I were to number something, drink, get high, have sex,
- 48:59Speaker 1: or do what ever it is, go go to the mall,
- 49:02Speaker 1: look pretty, whatever I gotta do, go to the clubs um.
- 49:05Speaker 1: If I cope through it, then it's gonna take me
- 49:08Speaker 1: longer to heal. So if I go through it and
- 49:11Speaker 1: like blow my girlfriends then to strangers and seven elevens.
- 49:15Speaker 1: You know whatever, I'm gonna get through it faster even
- 49:18Speaker 1: though it's gonna hurt, like you know what I'm saying.
- 49:21Speaker 1: So definitely, you definitely prolonged the healing process as you
- 49:26Speaker 1: as you add, right, every every twinky you eat just
- 49:29Speaker 1: makes you closer to the opposite end of where you
- 49:32Speaker 1: want to be, right, and that that's how it is,
- 49:34Speaker 1: or everything. Every time you do another act that goes
- 49:37Speaker 1: against what you want to be, you're just adding it.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Because the thing with with how the human system work
- 49:44Speaker 1: is the more you do something, the better you get
- 49:46Speaker 1: at it, right, So the more you live out, the
- 49:49Speaker 1: better you get at it. Some people are phenomenal cheaters,
- 49:52Speaker 1: and it's because they do it a whole lot, right,
- 49:55Speaker 1: So every time you do it, you're getting better at it,
- 49:57Speaker 1: which means it's going to take a lot long ger
- 50:00Speaker 1: to get better in the other direction because you're so
- 50:03Speaker 1: exceptional at what you do. If you lie a lot,
- 50:05Speaker 1: you're exceptional, it's gonna take you a lot to become
- 50:08Speaker 1: someone who tells the truth exceptionally. Right. That's that's deep,
- 50:13Speaker 1: that's deep. But I think at the end of the day. Um.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I mean, I personally give people a lot of grace.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I'm one of those people that you can literally push
- 50:20Speaker 1: me off my seat and be like, I was just
- 50:22Speaker 1: angry my bad plan. So I'll be like, oh no,
- 50:25Speaker 1: it's okay. Get But now I'm at the place where
- 50:28Speaker 1: it's like, I get it, you're angry. I just don't
- 50:30Speaker 1: want to sit next to you anymore. Take your anger
- 50:32Speaker 1: out on the flowers over there, you know. But it's
- 50:36Speaker 1: a pleasure to have you. I know, we kind of
- 50:38Speaker 1: we're all over the space. Um, I really would like
- 50:41Speaker 1: to go to your show tonight. I do have some plans,
- 50:44Speaker 1: but I'm gonna pivot and I'm and I'm a mother now,
- 50:47Speaker 1: so trust me, everything is like a babysitter, babysitter, nanny, babysitter.
- 50:51Speaker 1: It's like any amount of freedom costs you have to come.
- 50:53Speaker 1: This is gonna be special. I'm definitely gonna come. I
- 50:57Speaker 1: am a true fan. I have so much ad ration
- 51:00Speaker 1: for the way you run your businesses, how everyone gets
- 51:03Speaker 1: to buy and how everyone gets an option to invest,
- 51:05Speaker 1: and how you partner and do this restaurant where it's
- 51:09Speaker 1: like pay what you what you want, which is brilliant
- 51:14Speaker 1: and it's just something that a lot of artists aren't doing,
- 51:18Speaker 1: you know. And I love the vulnerability and your lyrics.
- 51:20Speaker 1: So I'm truly thankful that we finally got you on
- 51:23Speaker 1: the show. Um, thank you all listeners for checking out
- 51:28Speaker 1: another episode of Eating Wow Broke. I'm your host, coly
- 51:31Speaker 1: Wit and today we have wrestle in the building. Where
- 51:34Speaker 1: can they find your Like your Instagram handle? What's your Instagram?
- 51:38Speaker 1: I'm at Larussell on everything l A r U s
- 51:41Speaker 1: AS E L L. You can find me on social
- 51:44Speaker 1: media on DSPs, at home in Valeo, walking around. So
- 51:49Speaker 1: you don't, oh, you stay in the Bay, I stay home.
- 51:53Speaker 1: I live where I'm from and I'm there every day.
- 51:56Speaker 1: I'm taking my daughter to school, I'm begging her up,
- 51:58Speaker 1: and Momo's checking in on people. I'm around. I'm at home.
- 52:03Speaker 1: They when they told me that I got you, it
- 52:06Speaker 1: was like I had like two days notice, like you
- 52:08Speaker 1: know or whatever. And I was like negotiating with the team.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Everyone's scheduled. There's like four people that have to all
- 52:13Speaker 1: online schedules, and there was a hiccup and I'm like
- 52:18Speaker 1: going back and forth, like yo, do you think we
- 52:20Speaker 1: can push back and we're all like, no, it's not
