Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: What's going on everyone?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Emily Abadi here you are listening to five Minute Friday
- 0:28Speaker 2: from Hurdle. This has been a week that felt like
- 0:33Speaker 2: pre pandemic for me. And when I elaborate on that,
- 0:37Speaker 2: what I mean is this has been a week where
- 0:40Speaker 2: I have been in back to back meetings. I'm submitting
- 0:45Speaker 2: content for GQ again, I'm writing more and reminiscing a
- 0:51Speaker 2: bit about what it felt like when back in the
- 0:55Speaker 2: day I had a super productive day. I've been recording
- 0:59Speaker 2: for the show and finding time to take calls and meetings,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and also running after sponsorship deals and having consulting moments
- 1:09Speaker 2: with brands about New Year's opportunities. I feel as though
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And I don't know how this makes sense, but it
- 1:19Speaker 2: feels great. And it feels great because I can't help
- 1:23Speaker 2: but reflect on a time where I felt as though
- 1:26Speaker 2: I didn't have the capacity to do any of this stuff.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I talked openly about the experience that I had with
- 1:34Speaker 2: depression earlier last year and how I felt at times
- 1:40Speaker 2: like I would sit down at my desk and do
- 1:44Speaker 2: absolutely nothing for eight hours. It was as though I
- 1:47Speaker 2: didn't have the bandwidth, the emotional capacity to do even
- 1:51Speaker 2: the simplest things.
- 1:52Speaker 1: In that time period, I felt completely stuck.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And so as I sit here recording this five minute Friday,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I am filled with so much gratitude for the capacity
- 2:04Speaker 2: that I have and the help that I got, And
- 2:07Speaker 2: it makes me want to say that if you can
- 2:11Speaker 2: identify with that feeling of stuck, you are definitely, definitely
- 2:16Speaker 2: not alone, and there is a light at the end
- 2:19Speaker 2: of the tunnel. There are so many options if you
- 2:22Speaker 2: find that you yourself may be dealing with what I
- 2:27Speaker 2: dealt with. On the note of this week being highly productive,
- 2:32Speaker 2: what I came here to talk about are the strategies
- 2:35Speaker 2: that I've used because I get asked often about how
- 2:39Speaker 2: I schedule my day, how I delegate my responsibilities, how
- 2:43Speaker 2: I manage a calendar and a daylight. Today, as I
- 2:47Speaker 2: look to my left and I see this quite large
- 2:49Speaker 2: to do list, my number one tip to organizing yourself
- 2:53Speaker 2: when it feels like you have the summit of everest
- 2:56Speaker 2: ahead of you is to give things time, allotments and
- 3:00Speaker 2: schedule them so even if it is something as simple
- 3:04Speaker 2: as send a microphone to a guest for next week
- 3:09Speaker 2: or email Laurel back about Runners World Interview. These are
- 3:13Speaker 2: real things on my calendar, on my schedule from today.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Give them each a time block, put them either in
- 3:18Speaker 2: written form in front of you in a schedule, or
- 3:21Speaker 2: if you want to put them in a Google calendar,
- 3:23Speaker 2: put them in a Google calendar.
- 3:25Speaker 1: But whatever works for you.
- 3:26Speaker 2: This way, these events, these to dos, each get equal
- 3:31Speaker 2: respect from your bandwidth. They all get a place in
- 3:36Speaker 2: your day, and that way you can stay on task
- 3:39Speaker 2: and feel candidly really accomplished because you tackled that Maltain
- 3:45Speaker 2: and it feels really good in so many ways right now.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I also want to be candid that I don't know
- 3:52Speaker 2: about all of you, but I feel as though I'm
- 3:55Speaker 2: already quote unquote losing people for the rest of the year,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and that Thanksgiving is week and then I don't even
- 4:02Speaker 2: know if it's like I feel like some of the
- 4:04Speaker 2: people I want to communicate with, I want to do
- 4:05Speaker 2: business with, I want to work with over the next
- 4:07Speaker 2: six weeks, they might be checking out on Friday, and
- 4:10Speaker 2: I'm just not I'm not prepared for that.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So I want you to know that I'm here and I'm.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Working, and if you're working, I see you and we've
- 4:21Speaker 2: got stuff to get done because there are still something
- 4:25Speaker 2: like forty five days left in twenty twenty three, and
- 4:29Speaker 2: I know I'm going to go out with a bang.
- 4:32Speaker 1: My question my prompt for you this week.
- 4:36Speaker 2: What's one thing that you want to check off your
- 4:38Speaker 2: list for the rest of twenty twenty three. What is
- 4:40Speaker 2: one thing that you want to make time for to experience,
- 4:44Speaker 2: to see, to do, to try in the rest of
- 4:47Speaker 2: twenty twenty three.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And now a listener question.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, My question is about running a marathon and
- 4:56Speaker 3: specifically what to do after. So I'm running the New
- 4:59Speaker 3: York City Marathon. It's my first marathon in a couple weeks,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and I'm getting nervous about the weeks after the marathon
- 5:05Speaker 3: and what I'll do with all the free time I have.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I've really enjoyed the schedule that I've kept so far
- 5:11Speaker 3: training program, but thought of waking up and not having
- 5:14Speaker 3: a run on my calendar or something to do is
- 5:17Speaker 3: making me nervous. So I'm wondering what do you do
- 5:19Speaker 3: after you accomplish any big goal or run a marathon
- 5:23Speaker 3: and all of a sudden find yourself wondering what comes next?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Thank you can I tell you how many people are
- 5:31Speaker 1: in my DMS.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Asking this question, you make it so easy for me
- 5:35Speaker 2: to talk to you about Future.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to use this entire.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Answer block as an opportunity to do an ad read.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But when I tell you that Future has made my life,
- 5:45Speaker 2: posts running goals so much more organized and less chaotic
- 5:50Speaker 2: and less stressful, I would be It's an understatement to
- 5:54Speaker 2: say that Future, for those of you that don't know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: is online personal training. It pairs you up one on
- 5:59Speaker 2: one with an expert who does custom programming for you
- 6:02Speaker 2: at a fraction of the cost of like conventional personal training.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I've been using Future for I feel like the better
- 6:09Speaker 2: part of a year now. I even used it through
- 6:11Speaker 2: my marathon training, and I cannot talk up the service enough.
- 6:15Speaker 2: My coach Brandon is my guy. We text regularly. He's
- 6:18Speaker 2: there for everything I need. He modifies my programming when
- 6:22Speaker 2: I'm out of my home gym, maybe I'm traveling, maybe
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm heading back home to Connecticut for the holidays.
- 6:27Speaker 1: We've already talked about that.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I cannot recommend this enough, and it really empowers you
- 6:32Speaker 2: to work on some of the things. Maybe that if
- 6:34Speaker 2: you're talking about using this as a runner you weren't
- 6:37Speaker 2: dialed in on during marathon training. I love getting my
- 6:40Speaker 2: strength back and I feel motivated to go toward new
- 6:44Speaker 2: goals with his help. Now, if you want to get
- 6:48Speaker 2: in on this, I'm linking it in the show notes,
- 6:50Speaker 2: but the link is try Future dot co slash hurdle Again.
- 6:55Speaker 2: That is, try Future dot Co slash hurdle. Click to
- 7:00Speaker 2: that link in the show notes. It's they're waiting for you.
- 7:03Speaker 2: If Future isn't your fix, and I understand to each
- 7:07Speaker 2: their own, I will say, set a new goal. And
- 7:10Speaker 2: these goals don't need to be, you know, numbers based
- 7:13Speaker 2: or esthetically based.
- 7:15Speaker 1: They can just be simple, like I.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Want to try one new workout a week, or I
- 7:22Speaker 2: want to learn a new skill. Maybe you've never tried
- 7:25Speaker 2: working with kettlebells, and now is an opportunity to set
- 7:27Speaker 2: a goal to learn how to do that. Maybe you
- 7:30Speaker 2: want to get back into working out with friends, or
- 7:34Speaker 2: you want the opportunity to try a new distance. If
- 7:38Speaker 2: you're a runner and you just focus on the marathon,
- 7:40Speaker 2: why not make a new goal of running your fastest mile.
- 7:43Speaker 2: There are so many different opportunities ahead of you right now,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and although it might not be what you're used to,
- 7:48Speaker 2: what you've been doing over the past two, three, four months.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Know that they're there and they're waiting for you. So yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 2: set a goal, any goal, and follow up on that goal,
- 8:01Speaker 2: just like you did with all of that hard work
- 8:04Speaker 2: and all of that training.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Make sure you're.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Following along with Hurdle over on social It's at Hurdle podcast.
