Transcript
- 0:00The mental consciousness evolves subsequent to the emergence of
- 0:04the physical consciousness and the vital consciousness.
- 0:08It appears in rudimentary forms in various animals and advances
- 0:13to a much higher state of activity and power in the higher
- 0:16primates, including human beings as well as ocean going mammals
- 0:21such as dolphins and whales. There are various levels of
- 0:25manifestation of the mental consciousness, each stage
- 0:29representing a further advancement in either
- 0:31perception, analytical ability, use of tools to accomplish acts,
- 0:37abilities to synthesize and create new formulations and
- 0:42combinations, and the use of the higher reasoning powers of the
- 0:47rational intellect. The mind can be trained to
- 0:51undertake self reflection, to abstract itself from involvement
- 0:56in day-to-day processing that takes place in the outer nature,
- 1:00and to turn and focus attention in various directions at will.
- 1:06The higher powers of mind have a characteristic quality or guna
- 1:11of satwa, although it must be noted that the mind is
- 1:14frequently dominated by the vital nature and thus becomes an
- 1:18instrument in the fulfilment of vital desires.
- 1:22The mind also can become arrogant and narrow in its
- 1:25knowledge and can thus accentuate the control of the
- 1:29ego over the nature, which is a primary deformation of the
- 1:33mental consciousness when not fully purified.
- 1:38When rajas or tamas become predominant, the natural
- 1:41subtwick tendency of the mind per SE is overshadowed and its
- 1:47powers put to achieving lesser objectives.
- 1:52While we tend to think of the mind as the pinnacle of human
- 1:55powers of consciousness, it must be noted that the mind is
- 1:59actually an intermediate stage of the evolution and there are
- 2:03further and higher powers of consciousness that are
- 2:07developing and which manifest from time to time with more or
- 2:11less power depending on the strength of the higher
- 2:14inspiration and the receptivity of the individual.
- 2:19These higher powers go behind the rational intellect and
- 2:25provide powers of intuition, inspiration and a more complete
- 2:30and comprehensive mode of knowing and understanding.
- 2:35Doctor de Lal writes quote the mental being.
- 2:41This is the part of our make up which has to do with thoughts
- 2:44and ideas, facts and knowledge. Reason and intellect are the
- 2:49most highly developed expressions of the mental
- 2:52consciousness. In contrast to the vital, which
- 2:56is governed by the pleasure principle, the mental is guided
- 3:00by what accords with reason and is deemed to be true or good.
- 3:05Therefore, when the mental consciousness is predominant in
- 3:09an individual, the attitudes of the individual are characterized
- 3:13by a rational outlook and are based on moral and intellectual
- 3:18principles. End Quote Reference Shriora
